– K’Lavon Chaisson: The Sooners received some big news yesterday, and further evidence that continues to demonstrate the time, effort, and (most importantly) the effectiveness this OU staff has put in on the recruiting trail.
Recent visitor & 2017 DE K’Lavon Chaisson (Houston, TX) released his Top 10 (below) and of note is that those schools are listed “in order.”

Now this is not only big news for OU because Chaisson is a very talented DE prospect, but also because he and 5-star DT Marvin Wilson are very close. In fact, Wilson has even indicated to TFB that he and Chaisson would like to play together at the next level. – (Super K)
– Ceedee Lamb: The former OU wide receiver commit announced earlier this week that he plans to commit prior to the start of this upcoming season. An interesting note we came across, however, is that Lamb expects to be in Norman for a July 29th recruiting event the OU staff is hosting.
As many of you are aware, it’s not unheard of but is somewhat unusual for a player to commit and then re-commit to that same school. However, in talking to folks familiar with Lamb’s recruitment, we get the sense that is exactly what may happen here.
As of today, we really like where the Sooners stand with Lamb. Dennis Simmons, Lincoln Riley and the rest of the OU staff never pressured Lamb, either prior to his commitment or following his decommitment. They allowed him to look around while continuing to diligently recruit him throughout the entire process. Which seems to have resonated with Lamb and could (key word) ultimately pay off for OU a second time. – (Brandon)
– Tyler Taylor: The Sooners also made the cut for recent 2017 LB visitor, Tyler Taylor (Buford, GA). There are even some folks who believe OU may actually lead for Taylor right now. We’ll be digging around for some information on this in the next week or so and will be sure to pass along whatever we can track down. – (Super K)

I like seeing the advances in the DL recruiting! We are in on some top level DL guys, and I hope we can land some of them!
How is this LB class gonna shake out? We lead for too many studs! Chaisson, Phillips, Hines, Taylor, Gumbs – How do you say no to all of those guys?
I have a feeling they are going to get Hines and Browning… Which would make for one hell of a LB class

The only reason I say those two is because I think Hines is almost for sure. I have heard via my friend who is involved in recruiting for TCU that they have told them they want to play together. Then I saw a video where they were interviewing Robison at the Rivals camp. Browning walked up behind him, hugged him, put the horns down, and said Boomer Sooner. Then Robison kinda laughed, said “That’s my dude, he gonna commit” Then he looked at the camera like he had made a horrible mistake, and went on talking about his performance. Sorta a weird thing to be optimistic about, but nevertheless, it was interesting.
I hope that you’re right. Browning is a total stud but we’re in on so many top notch LBs that really if any two of them commit we’ll be good to go.
Totally agree. At this point, I would take pretty much any of them who have been named as very interested. Defensive recruiting has gotten remarkably better since I started at OU four years ago…
You don’t say NO, you just take the first guys that commit and tell the other guys, “Sorry, too late, we’re full”.
Seems like some of these boys need to start pulling the trigger before the SS17 train fills all of its seats.

It would be nice to get some defensive line guys. Chaisson and Marvin Wilson would put this class over the top. Not holding my breath though.
I’m sure 95% of the colleges out there would take both Wilson and Chaisson in a heartbeat. So, that says a lot for this OU staff if they are able to get both guys on the SS17 train.

this might have been discussed already, but would Chaisson be more of an OLB, or do they think they could bulk him up enough to be a hand in the dirt DE in our defense? Moves around well, and comes off the ball really fast, but definitely plays more like a Striker than what I expect one of our D-ends to do.

Looks like the DL requirements are big guys, not 220 and hope they get to 275. They want all 300lbs guys in those three spots with tall, fast OLBs. I’m on that train.
Just looking at his frame he doesn’t look like he will carry DE weight that well. At this point he would need to add 50 lbs to play DE.
I think he could fit DE if we ran the 4-3, but probably not in a 3-4.
Chaisson, Wilson, Hines and Gumbs are who I am hoping for. Do we have enough spots for all four though? Pretty sure Sooners find a scholly for Wilson even in the 11th hour.
Taylor will have to learn to hate that sticker he has on his helmet. 🙂

I agree dawg. However, when I see a top team like OU go after this many OLBs, it tells me one thing. Maybe the ones they have now are not as good as they hoped. Maybe DeBerry isn’t what he was advertised. I’m not bashing the current group, just that this class has some studs at this position.

I think it’s more of a depth issue after seeing what Clemson did last year reloading their entire roster and also what they did to OU in the bowl game when they lost two players. It could definitely be a talent issue though, sounds like Deberry and Mcginnis both haven’t been what they expected.
Or it could be that these players are in high demand and they aren’t sure how many they are going to get. It’s easier to say “we are full” than to say “we haven’t recruited you until now, but come play for us because nobody else wants to.” That’s what we were doing a few years ago and you see how that works.
These guys that we have been recruiting at olb are your prototypical olb. Big dudes that can run. Pass rush, pass rush, pass rush..
I agree. Upon looking at the roster, I don’t see a lot of OLBs other than Obo and DeBerry. There are a couple more but don’t think they are on scholly. Seem like we could take 4 OLBs or more if they are pure studs like we’ve been reading about. Or, they may convert one or two to ILB.
I believe Beal and Doucet are both going to be tried at OLB first.
Agree, I’m saying on the roster now. I don’t see a lot of JUCO guys coming in and being studs right off the bat. Hopefully they are good and will be solid depth if not making the rotation.
Don’t forget about possibly getting Youngquist on campus. Not sure what all’s going on with him, but I’m still holding out that he’ll be a part of our team as well. Tremendous talent at OLB!
if he ever plays college football, which is very doubtful, I think they had him pegged as an inside guy. I think they want 6’3 or longer on the outside to deal with offensive tackles.

I’m excited to see more olb talent because I always figured you wanted two olbs on the field that can set edge, rush passer, and drop in coverage.. in order to bring more multi blitz schemes.. Oline cant slide protection without knowing where the 4th rusher is….also, if they bring in a fb/te in to help pass pro its 1 less playmaker on the outside..
I would assume that there is and that if we get both, it’d go over that limit. I’d prefer Chaisson if i had to chose, but hopefully Bob doesn’t have to send one away
There is always a scholarship limit. 85 for the team total. People say we wouldn’t turn so and so away, but if that is how you do recruiting then you end up with a ten QB’s and no OL. In practice, if you do your recruiting right, you don’t end up turning many away, but there are times you have to.
True. Also gotta consider the fact that OU may persuade a guy like Isaiah Thomas to look elsewhere , OU has done it the past and expect us to possibly do it again if a guy like Browning wanted to be a Sooner.

Yeah coaches have said they’re going to start him out inside. Doucet and Beal will be outside I believe but they both only have 2 years. I think 2 OLB is a good minimum number every year. I would think they need to recruit at least two OLB and 1 ILB every year. Some years maybe more.
Don’t forget KJ said something about a Defensive player leaving the team.

I think J. Phillips is a better prospect. My only concern with Taylor is that if OU gets him, they may not get Phillips. And if they did somehow land both, I can’t see them landing Hines too. 4 ILB in one class seems unrealistic.
I actually agree with you. I’d much rather get Hines and/or Phillips. I’ve become a huge Phillips fan recently. I just love one upping my SEC fan friends

my gosh guys…what a good time to be a Sooner fan, I honestly didn’t think we’d see recruiting reach this level again under Stoops since it had leveled off so much since 2006 with the exception being 2010. If we just land the 4 star kids we lead for, this class is going to be amazing. If we land Wilson and Okudah on top of those guys? I can’t imagine.

Anyone know if Chaisson has set a commitment date?
I know Gumbs is supposed to be pretty good in coverage but what about Chaisson? Has he ever played coverage?
I’ve looked on his Twitter and watched videos of him and his private footwork instructor and I’m not sure if he’s played well in coverage, but the kid can absolutely move. His speed is insane and those fast twitch muscle fibers are all throughout his body! He’ll Play the Jack roll in our defense if he signs with us so his coverage won’t matter as much.

Just reading an article about recruiting rankings (quantity vs. quality) and thought this was interesting

Glad to see we’re nowhere on that list. The teams on it, funny enough, are exactly the kinds of teams you’d expect. The teams who have had some nice seasons in the past decade, but never really do much that sticks

That’s my kind of list to be on!
This is one of the reasons the SEC always has teams rated high in the ratings. They oversign. I’ve even seen some offer kids they knew couldn’t make grades just so their recruiting rating would look better. You get a commit from a 4* going JC and he counts on your rating. Just one of the reasons why team ratings stink. If you have to look at them, look at average stars and not total points.
I remember maybe 2 recruiting classes ago, Tennessee signed about 34 people or something and was only ranked #5. With that amount you should be #1 or #2. Not many people think about how diluted some classes are

If OU can make it to the playoff again this year I believe they will close with at worst the #2 recruiting class in the country, possibly #1. If you combine making the final four with Baker having another year plus the QB’s coming in behind him, plus the new facilities will be completed, plus the stability of coach Stoops. They will pull a couple of 5 star guys towards the end and it will take them to the top of the rankings. JMO.

Agree. A lot of factors coming together that IF it translates to playoff success, again, bodes well for this class and sets up 2018 for more success. Success breeds success.
I like the optimism but without landing a few long shots I don’t know if it is possible. Wilson is about the only 5* OU has a legit shot with right now. Okudah, Browning, and maybe Austin Jackson there is a long shot, but not really. Alabuma is already ahead of OU and is the favorite to land at least one more 5* and possible 4 more and is the favorite on around 10 more 4* players. They won’t get them all of course, but that is what OU is up against in getting that #1 class. Ohio St is in much the same position as Alabuma but they are the favorites on 4 more 5* players with the chance on 7 that are currently uncommitted.
Regardless, OU should end up in the top 5. With another successful year, maybe 2018 ends up top 2, but I would consider top 5 huge any year.
So I have been re-watching OUr games from last year since there is nothing else good on TV right now… Wow we were so close to a really different season.
Tenn- Overtime win on the road, could have gone either way. Early in the season so we weren’t really in the groove yet and were just really slow to get going. Shepard/Perine/Bake really saved the day.
Baylor – Their starting QB was out and they played a true freshman (given he played quite well). Game was back and forth but we did show signs of dominance at times. Really never felt like we didn’t have control but was really too close for comfort. Could have been a very different outcome if Petty was the starter.
TCU- They were without their Starting Center, QB, #1 WR, and a ton of defensive guys. We lost Baker at half and TK9 comes in and is completely ineffective. Luckily Perine broke a huge TD run for our only points of the 2nd half and Parker made an amazing play to block their 2 point conversion or we end up losing at home. TCU is scary to me because for whatever reason their defense always has our number. Baker was completing less than 50% of his passes before he was knocked out of the game.
OSU- Ha, JK we torched those reindeer f^&#ers.
Anyway, just food for conversation. It was definitely a rebuilding year for us and we got lucky at times facing opponents #2,#3,#4 Qb’s. Hopefully we all remember how differently last season could have gone before we make any wild predictions. We will definitely know by the end of the 3rd week what kind of team we have… 3-0 and we should be sitting at #1, 1-2 and it will be tough to keep the wheels on.

And we played Clemson without, arguably, our best DL. I believe the results would have been different if Walker had played in that game.
The DL will be awesome. I think we are going to see pressure from the DL. I’m banking on Walker, Gallimore, Lampkin, et al, to be in the backfield a lot.
We would have still lost, IMO. We couldn’t stop their counter QB runs that Texas killed us with as well. Our offense just didn’t commit to running the ball the way we should have and all our routes seemed to be long developing routs when we just didn’t have that time for Baker.
Yes our Oline was getting destroyed in the second half. Baker didn’t have any time to go through his progressions. Hopefully our o-line makes a natural but larger progression with another year of experience and a reshuffle of positions.
I believe we will! We always have solid offensive lines, we were just young and they had 2 almost first rounders at the end positions.

Well to counter that argument, Clemson lost a few of their D-line studs in that game and their backups tore us up just as bad. Our depth issue showed up pretty bad in that game. Basically our backups were a class below theirs, Frank Shannon looked like he was running in cement when he went in for Evans.
That’s a very convincing argument/counter-point. I can accept your analysis, as I agree with you: I think we got out schemed.
Some of it was luck, sometimes you make your own luck. I don’t think the Baylor game would have been any different. TCU might have been but at the same time without the cheap shot on Mayfield, that game wouldn’t have been as close as it was either (not to mention that Perine was playing hurt). Same can be said of 2014 as well. OU was a few plays away from an 11-1 regular season. Good teams find a way to win the close ones. Last years team had the moxy and I believe this years team will as well.
I think we forget OU committed tons of stupid penalties on defense when Baylor was around the 20 and 30 yardline , which aloud them to get into scoring position.
Yes that is true, one was on 3rd and long went from giving up a field goal, to a TD on the next play.
I would say that my main takewaway from the TCU game was that we need to be very dialed in when we go down there this year. A healthy Patterson defense will be tough to score on. Of all the B12 games next year I am most worried about either UT or TCU.
Patterson is a hell of a coach and a great defensive mind. Even heir first couple years in the BIG12 they held us below our average. We will have to play well on both sides of the ball.

We have been on the other side of it more times than i can remember, injuries to Bradford, white, etc. Bad calls/luck whatever. Just need Mike Stoops not to give away a game or 3 every season with bad game plans. P.S. we did beat oSu one year with our #3 QB.

Did you really expect him to choose us? We are stacked at WR IMO. Sure most of the guys are young but we have solid depth IMO.

I’m sorry but IF we make another playoff run we are landing these big time kids. This is massive for us. Wilson could easily be influenced by K’Lavon. I just LOVE all these different types of linebackers who are interested in us. Our Front 7 is going to be filthy in the next two seasons.
yeah 2018 when the freshman class are sophomores? it’s going to be really, really good and only getting better after that if they land all these studs
I mean between Kelly, Deberry, both Evans’, Jackson and any of the linebackers we land this year can all have an NFL career. We always seem to have good linebackers and half of them Stoops found on the side of the road. We’ve never really landed a plethora of 4/5 star guys at LB.
I still really like Doucets film too. I’m banking on him getting alot of reps if that’s his goal this year.

Just from his film it looks like he does the most damage there. Be a good weak side because he runs really well.
you think he could handle Striker’s coverage responsibilities? I know he played zone almost exclusively but still, it doesn’t sound like Obo or Deberry could handle that.
I think Doucet will cover better than Strike once he learns the defense.
awesome, how do you feel about replacing Bond? I know a lot of people were really high on him but I feel like the Sooners could definitely upgrade with a replacement. Bond was definitely explosive but in rewatching some of the games, he wasn’t very discipline on the edge. Especially against Clemson, I saw a few times where he gave up big runs outside by being too aggressive.
I love our potential replacements. Devante was good, but he wasn’t well rounded imo. Physical and had an awesome first step. I still have not watched that game since I was sitting in the stands. At one point I think some kids were trying to do to much to make something happen and got careless in their assignments. Depth on D was a problem too, with CW and Jordan out, that’s another 10+ tackles we missed out on.

His film is solid, it’s just the others I listed are already a step ahead IMO. Their potential is far greater than Doucets and I think sometimes you have to go that route rather than play someone who we’ll only have for 2 years and they are almost tapped out in the potential department.
Oh yeah moving forward, things look good at the position for the next few.
I hope he’s not recruited over, but it wouldn’t shock me one bit.

I watched him in the Elite 11 live and in the opening. Stud and what Riley would call a winner. He is only 6′ so with the big bodies, throwing over the middle is not going to be easy for him. Great footwork with strong accurate arm. Maybe not next year but the following years especially with this new OC.

Trajan is going to be one of my favorites. The kid is a Goon and I’m glad he’s OUrs. I still can’t get over that interview he had with soonerscoop where he just lit up when talking about campus and our coaches.

OU has established itself as a Top 5 brand in recruiting now. OU has gotten better with the Social media part of recruiting , we have stadium renovations almost finished , Our facilities once finished will be the best in the country , we have great coaches and coaching stability ( haha Texsa). We have a great college town and great fans. So recruits if you wanna win Championships and have a really good education as well as a social life and be a part of Sooner nation. They could always charge violators the cost of their free education. Put that in the LOI and I bet you’ll clean it up real quick. That will make them aware of the value of that scholarship and make them aware that they have to be good citizens.

They can give the coaches a show cause, which prohibits them from coaching anywhere in the B12, but so what. Now if the NCAA would do that, it would be a bigger deal. Still coaches that get those usually go work in the pros until it is over.
If you are worried about the kids, let them transfer unrestricted until the sanctions are over. Maybe even give them an extra year of eligibility if they do.

Agreed. They lost their entire secondary and a LB who was the heart and soul of their defense so that’s good for us. The problem is, they’re getting everybody back on offense and that offense is very similar to clemson’s and nearly just as good.

They look like Clemson Jr. to me. Their QB is really, really good, really elusive, and so are their WRs. Almost a mirror image of Clemson only not as high of caliber of talent across the board nor the depth.

They’re still high school kids. One of the things I think OU does a great job in developing the players ability to deal with the media and the public. I remember Charles Tapper was a basket case when he got in front of the media the first time. I’ve seen interviews with him in Dallas and he does pretty good with it. That’s a valuable skill no matter what you do after college.

With K’Lavon having us listed at 1 after being a heavy LSU lean from what it looked like is huge. I think his impact on Marvin will be huge as well.
