Open Post | Weekend, Apr. 15th – 17th (UPDATE Fri., 11:49 am)

Isaiah Thomas: Last weekend the Sooners hosted a number of recruits including 2017 DE/OLB, Isaiah Thomas (Tulsa, OK). And while Thomas had already been on to Norman on multiple occasions, this most recent visit was preceded by his first trip to Stillwater to visit Oklahoma State.

The Sooners were Thomas’ leader going into that Ok State trip, but in speaking with him post Stillwater it seemed as though the Pokes had made a great impression and put themselves firmly in the race.

That said, Thomas has since told TFB that the Sooners are “back at the top” right now. However, he also said there are plans for a return trip to Stillwater prior to making any kind of a decision. – (Super K)

Addison Gumbs: One of the more explosive edge rushers in the 2017 class is Addison Gumbs (Heyward, CA). Gumbs recently made the trip to Norman and, as we mentioned earlier in the week, that trip went extremely well. While out on the road, Gumbs visited a number of other schools including Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Arkansas, and Texas A&M. He and his family finished up their college visits tour last weekend.

In speaking to Gumbs, it sounds like a list of top schools could be coming soon. “I still have two more visits to take next week, and then I’ll narrow it down.” Gumbs’ final trips will be to Washington and Nebraska.

There is little doubt that OU will make the cut once Gumbs decides to narrow down his list. As of right now, the Sooners are looking “very good” according to Gumbs. I spoke with a source close Gumbs, who said that as of right now it is an OU/USC battle for his services. And I was also told that if the decision was made today, OU would have the slight lead. – (Super K)

Coaches on the Road: Spring evaluation period begins today (Friday), so the coaches will begin hitting the road to get a look at a number of prospects in-person.

– UPDATE (Fri., 11:49 am): Just a reminder — although one you may not want depending on how things could possibly turn out — that 2016 OU wide receiver commit Ceedee Lamb is expected to visit LSU this weekend. His affinity for the Tigers has been mentioned/discussed on the site many times now, so this is probably something to keep an eye on throughout the weekend.

If Lamb can resist the all-out sales pitch Les Miles & co. are sure to put on and leaves Baton Rouge without decommitting, then one has to think the Sooners are in pretty good shape moving forward. As always if there are any updates re: said visit to be had, we’ll do our best to bring them to you as quickly as possible.

My plan was to do nothing today. However, I just got a notice that I have to go in and test a change we’ve made on the IVR. That will be after work. Yay, me!!!

I’m bidding on some stuff coming out of Charleston today, I’ll either be working all w/e or walking on the beach.

          • SamSooner says:

            Are you in Charleston, SC?

We go to Pawley’s Island every year to visit my wife’s aunt and uncle.
We usually make the drive down to Charleston to go to the market. We eat at the restaurant “82 Queen Street” every year.

          • Rick says:

I’m actually in Spartanburg, I delivered a big piece of machinery just south of Greenville, SC yesterday morning early, but I will probably be off to Charleston at some point this morning.

The South Carolina coast is great. My relatives bought a house with every intent to flip it. When they were done, they didn’t want to part with it. They sold their home in Ohio and moved down.

Charleston is beautiful! The only time I “don’t” like it their is during hurricane season. One of my drop everything else and come help contracts is with FEMA. As much as I love Charleston, I would hate to work their professionally during relief aid.

          • SamSooner says:

Lot of history there, for sure. The earth is a living thing. There are dangers everywhere you live, huh?

          • Rick says:

Absolutely! Some people are aware and prepaired with the dangers they live around, some stick their collective heads in the sand.

Use your short arm to reach into your deep pockets and fork out the cash for a more reliable connection.

Seriously, you’re probably around a lot of wireless connection, which are using the same frequency. If there is an unsecured network, a free wifi connection that doesn’t require a password, you probably jumping back and forth between the two networks.

      • metzker says:

Thanks that sounds probable im on a hot spot at work,id guess most in the middle of nowhere are.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Most people don’t know that wireless routers/hotspots can be set at different frequencies. So they usually run at the default. Since most vendors have one default for their units, it’s pretty likely that you get collisions if there are any others around.

  • SamSooner says:

TFB Mods, do we have a chance at Wilson for DT. Are the coaches going after multiple DTs to avoid the Chris Daniels fiasco. I’d think we’d be looking to take at two DTs this year.

          • hOUligan says:

It was true in certain segment, like roofing contractors. Saw more than once ICE pull up on a roofing job and you heard shouts of ‘La migra… la migra… ‘ and everyone bailed off the roof and scattered throughout the neighborhood.

          • metzker says:

La migra is funny stuff i use it often, they dont like it.I step out of the trailor and yell LAAAAAA MIGRAAAAAAAAAA, They give me the LLAMA look.

          • Tony B says:

If you are a reputable construction company then a background check along with the proper documents will be needed for employment, although some slip through the cracks with false social security cards, etc.. Usually in time those get found out also. There are smaller companies that look the other way and pay out cash to illegals. This also goes on in many other industries but since construction deals in a lot of manual labor and entry level positions it is much easier for an illegal to get a construction job where less communication is needed than say a fast food restaurant. I’ve also ran across a lot of bigger farms and feedlots that employ illegals also but they are lesser known due to being in rural areas. Western KS and NW OK have their fair share of this.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Yeah and it goes deeper than that with some smaller companies. I was looking at purchasing one and they didn’t even pay payroll taxes. They paid their employees like subs and they clearly weren’t. Needless to say I ran the other way on that one.

          • Tony B says:

Yes my mom actually works for a roofing / construction company as their book keeper and they even make her a sub so they won’t have to pay or deal with their taxes. This also keeps them out of liability issues with illegals and insurance / benefits or lack thereof.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Yeah we have some employees and some subs. Each have their positives and negatives. Hopefully they all did their research to ensure she is in fact qualifies for a subcontractor, there are some silly laws on that subject.

          • rphokc says:

heard an interview with a construction co owner in calif that is losing his business due to the competition with cos that hire illegals while he abides by the law ………when he tried to get the calif gov officials to come down on them they refused to do anything, such is the state of things in calif and maybe other places

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

No worries, $15 per hour minimum wage will fix everything.

          • metzker says:

And get you a 10 dollar cheese burger at McDonalds

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

It’ll be the $10 Dollar Menu now. LOL

          • metzker says:

            Exactly,people are so darn smart.

          • metzker says:

LMFAOOOOOOOOOO Thats funny as hell,i gotta steal this for my facebook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • SamSooner says:

Well, paying people a fair wage and socialism are two different things.
Socialism, I believe, is equal distribution of wealth.
Fair wage is honest pay for honest work; it’s labor + compensation based on profit margin of product sold. Both parties should benefit in the arrangement. To me, it seems one sided.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Yea just depends on who we are talking about. There are definitely some larger corporations that don’t pay enough, but a lot of small companies pay their employees very well. In many cases, employees make more than the employer but don’t have anywhere near the risk. They could just move on to another job if the company fails, but the owner is saddled with debt and may lose house, cars family etc. They should be able to reward themselves if successful.

          • SamSooner says:

I get it. It’s a real concern. There are a lot of corporations who go way, way, above what’s expected and still have a grumbling workforce. I know the challenges of running a business is risky. It takes a dedicated and smart person to do that. I take my hat off to anyone who’s brave enough to do it.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

We’re not all smart but we are dedicated! LOL. I see your points, that why I make it a point to compensate my employees very well. We both win in the end.

          • SamSooner says:

I know Lincoln. I hope I didn’t offend you. It’s a delicate balance. I hope you didn’t think I was implying that you don’t care. I know it’s hard. There are a lot of good people, like you, helping the economy grow.

My brother said “An even swap is not a swindle.” LOL!

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

No sir, no offense taken. I understand people have different opinions based on life experiences or other influences. I think there are good honest debates that can produce a mutual common ground that would prove to be beneficial for (most) everybody.

          • metzker says:

Spring evaluation period usually means a few more offers and begins stirring the recruiting news. We can only hope w/ the spring game and spring notes behind us.

  • Matt says:

man, found this video of Dom’s career. We are going to miss him. He made a lot of quick reads and stops. Tay may be more athletic and/or more physical but we are going to miss Dom’s ability to diagnose. https://youtu.be/RKHKaSOSWG8

    • Tony B says:

I agree Dom was a sharp player and could read Offenses pretty well but the only problem I had with him was that I have very rarely seen him drive a player backwards on a play or stand a back up in the hole. He was a little undersized but just not very physical or attacking. I hope we can get a combo of smart, physical and attacking in one of these young guys coming up. Dom was a good player for OU and yes I do believe this year he will be missed.

      • Matt says:

he was also great in coverage but yeah I wouldn’t mind having a more explosive hitter either

      • Super Keith says:

Agree completely. I wonder how rare that kind of linebacker is going to be in the Big XII. Since we require more LBs to drop into coverage, weight can be a bit of an issue. It’s been a while since we had a MLB that could stop a guy cold, and drive him back. We will miss Dom, but I think we can still upgrade that spot (I just don’t know who it will be, hopefully it’s Tay).

    • Super Keith says:

Not to take away from what Dom did at OU, because he was a very consistent linebacker, however, I think a lot of what he was able to do was predicated on how well our defensive line played. Back in the ‘old days’ (the 70s,80s, etc.), the defensive line’s job was to occupy the offensive line and allow the linebackers to clean up the job. That’s what happened a lot last year. Now, to Dom’s credit, there’s a lot to be said for a guy that understands his job, has a nose for the ball and is in the right place (which is a huge component).

Dom wasn’t the most physical linebacker, but he was smart and in position. We need someone that can be smart, in position and has the physical presence to stop the ballcarrier cold in his tracks. I don’t know if Tay is that guy, but he’s got the physical stature to be that guy. From what I’ve been able to see, Tay appears to have a good handle on the defense, is a smart player and understands where he is supposed to be, when he’s supposed to be there. I would love to see Bolton in that position, but it appears he’s still a little too anxious to remain disciplined in this defense.

Dom’s football intelligence and nose for the ball will provide him a really strong opportunity to make a 53 man NFL squad. He will be missed, but I think we can upgrade that position…I’m just not sure who it will be that takes that spot and makes it better.

      • Matt says:

oh I definitely agree we can find an upgrade physically and athletically. I’m not too high on Bolton just because he doesn’t look much bigger or stronger than Dom, at least from what I can see. Are you sold on him physically? Tay seems to be quite a bit longer and bigger at least on paper.

        • Super Keith says:

You know Matt, after reading your comment I went to and compared Tay and Bolton to get a better feel for the physical differences, and Tay is much bigger (relatively). Bolton seems to play more like his hair is on fire, but I’m not sure that’s a good thing at MLB. I need to go back and rewatch the spring game specifically to watch Tay. He may be the more physical guy.

          • Matt says:

Yeah I didn’t see the game, I only saw highlights and there were several highlights of Bolton but I don’t think I saw any of Tay.

  • rphokc says:

nhlers, nice win for dallas stars last nite, very solid game though the wild are missing a couple of their stars…….several teams with important injuries……..

  • stan H says:

Isaiah it will be a much easier task to get on the field at OSU. OU plays teams like Bama,Notre Dame, FSU,Tennessee and Ohio State early this year. Steel sharpens steel at OU, so yes it will be much easier to see the field at Oklahoma st.

    • Super Keith says:

I think that’s probably the only advantage OSU has over OU, playing time early. That can be an attractive option…but, like you said, does he want to see the field against the Southern Louisianan’s of the college football world, or wait a bit and see the field against the Ohio State’s of the college football world? Seems like an easy option to me, but I’m just a bit biased.

  • Higgs Boson says:

    Ride em cowboy.

  • Mark_in_VA says:

I have a really hard time accepting that someone would be conflicted between OU and Pork St. after visiting both. That’s like trying to decide between a date with Keira Knightley or Rosanne Barr.

    update added

    • metzker says:

He seems tight with Chris .

      • hOUligan says:

Yeah. Was just thinking about that. He and Robison were literally really connecting in passing drills at one of the recent camps. That has to count for something.

        • metzker says:

Id thinks so,or hope so.The squad needs to be all over him!!!!!

          • hOUligan says:

In fairness, when he committed Lamb did say he was going to still take his visits. See he is going to visit Baylor, too. Losing him to LSU, I could take that much better than if we lost him to them.

          • SamSooner says:

SS17, we need an intervention meeting. LOL!

    • hOUligan says:

Thanks for the update and heads-up on Lamb. Depending upon what happens there, Rison or Manning could get back into the picture.

      • Jordan Esco says:

I’m gonna guess the ship has probably sailed w/ Rison, but I could certainly be wrong there.

    • SamSooner says:

      Thanks, Jordan.

      SS17 has it under control.

  • bigrackhunter says:

If Lamb was a defensive player, we would be in a real trouble of a flip… hopefully he watches some tape of Lester’s juggernaut offense and comes to his sences

    • Ura Hogg says:

LSU is right up there with Texsa for having the ability to get so little out of the talent they bring on campus. Not sure if any player has had the experience of being “coached up” under Les Miles.

    • metzker says:

Hmmm! Whats your take on this Jordan? Never mind, i read the article sorry for my ignorance.

    • SamSooner says:

      That’s a violation, correct?

      • ColoradoSooner says:

        Against intelligence, yes.

        • SamSooner says:

Funny, I thought I read somewhere that a school is not allowed to have contact with a recruit once the recruit has signed an LOI.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Sam I don’t think that is true. I’ve heard our coaches say before things, like we kept in touch after he signed. However, there may be limits to that. Still why would you send a recruit a packet after the signing day for his class?

          • SamSooner says:

            IN-COM-PE-TENCE.

          • Bob Edwards says:

In reality it was probably some intern in the athletic department who was told to send it out and got the wrong name. Still doesn’t look good.

          • SamSooner says:

            Charlie and the Goofs.

I don’t see him lasting long there. He’s has some good fortune, recruiting wise, but I still don’t think it’s going to translate into wins.

Although, the Baylor situation might help him.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I think the only reason he is still there is he has done well against us. Right now he’s dead man walking. A nine or ten win season and a win against us and he probably sticks around. A 20-30 point loss to us and he may not survive the season. With ND at home plus OSU and Cal on the road before our game he could be 1-3 going in. A big loss and he might not leave Dallas as head coach.

          • SamSooner says:

Let’s hope our boys do their part.

          • blaster1371 says:

I just don’t understand how big time WR’s think they’re going to find success at a non-throwing school like LSU with historically bad QB play. (scratching my head)

    • cdzendolet says:

Odell Beckham Jr. came out of LSU, and there have been a couple other LSU WR’s that have done well in the NFL. They have some pedigree, but they don’t get the big numbers due to their generally at or below average QB play.

    • Brent says:

To be fair LSU has produced Beckham, Jarvis Landry, Reuben Randle and OU has “produced” DGB in recent years

      • Super Keith says:

Yeah, it’s not hard to understand the attraction. If it were only about production, OU may be more attractive, but if you are “the” WR in an offense like LSU, you’re going to get your catches/yards. We just have to hope OU is still the better option for Lamb at the end of the weekend.

        • Dana Rogers says:

Wonder if he remembers just how close Mr. Miles came to standing in the unemployment line last year?

          • Ura Hogg says:

It’s fair for any recruit of LSU, Texsa, or TAMU to wonder who their HC might be if they choose to go in one of those directions. With expectations even higher for LSU this year, it’s pretty clear there’s no margin for error with Les (is not more) Miles.

          • Dana Rogers says:

Do they make a 3 sided coin we could flip?

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Kenny Stills is a third wideout in Miami who contributes as well. J Saunders.

    • DCinAZ says:

Well…..they have been finding success, mostly in the NFL, far and above what we’ve done with our WRs. Beckham and Landry are both pro-bowlers and they just started their careers. They played on a non throwing team.

What makes me scratch my head is how little success our WRs have had in the NFL and we’ve had a wide open pass-heavy offense with great QB play for over a decade.

      • Framoka says:

I agree but name some of the OU WR’s who were 4-5 star, fast, good sized and had amazing stats since Broyles? Some of those types got kicked off. Not much there, plus jucos and transfers. In fact, not much memorable until Shep; I’m like blanking except for Bester and Flasher.

        • DCinAZ says:

          Shepherd?

I think our problem is our offense has always been too focused on the Slot WR position too much. We have done a bad job of recruiting big time, physical, difference makers at the WR position on the outside and spent most of our time with undersized WRs who struggle in press coverage like we did all of last season.

The NFL wants the Dez Bryants and Megatrons of the world and we can’t seem to recruit or develop large, dominant, prototype WRs on the outside. I think that’s our biggest problem with not producing NFL WRs.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I tend to agree with you. Our past preference for small speedy guys has hurt us against more physical teams. If we want to advance in final four, we need more physical guys across the board. But plainly at WR.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

In 08′ moving forward, OU followed Florida’s blueprint at WR. Prior to that had Malcom Kelly 6’4 212…

      • Jpsooner23 says:

This convo seems vaguely familiar. I wont offer my thoughts this time for fear of being bludgeoned 🙂

    • Okie403 says:

They don’t get banged up in college since they don’t get used!

    • Greenlantern Otis says:

      2. LSU

      First-round picks last 15 years: 4
      Top three rounds: 10
      Total drafted: 14
      The skinny: Odell Beckham,
Jr., stamps a certain approval on LSU’s claim. He’s one of the most
exciting young players in the NFL. Beckham was a first-round pick last
year, as were Dwayne Bowe and Craig Davis in 2007, and Michael Clayton in 2004. Jarvis Landry, a second-rounder in 2014, made 84 catches as a Dolphins rookie. Other LSU pros in the span: Devery Henderson, Josh Reed, Brandon LaFell and Rueben Randle.

      • Jpsooner23 says:

Yep, and if kids see the paycheck they don’t get so worried about their college stats like many on here believe they do.

    • lefty67 says:

FWIW, I just checked out their stats on ESPN.com, & since 2004 (that’s as far back as it goes there, which is plenty far enough), 2013 is the only year they’ve had a 1,000 yd. receiver (OBJ & Landry both did it that year), not so coincidentally IMO, with Mettenberger throwing it to them.

  • Scott says:

I’m not worried if Lamb was to decommit , OU has some 5 star WR’s prospects in the waiting ( Joseph Lewis , James Robinson ). Hey TFB do you guys think Damion Daniels from Bishop Dunne will get a offer from OU soon? The guy has size and a pretty good offer list.

  • Defend Colfax says:

Ever since you guys brought up the idea of a moderator this place has been on flames..

  • CrimsonNative says:

I hope we can keep Lamb. The DB’s he went against in The Open couldn’t stay within five yards of him.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I have no problem with Lamb seeing if another team would be better for him as long as he doesn’t have a problem with us seeing if there’s somebody that might work better for us.

  • Jason Vos says:

CeeDee Lamb has to remember Kyler Murray & Chris Robison will be throwing him the ball

    • Daryl says:

It just needs to see WR production at LSU. They never have any resemblence of an offense

      • SooperDave says:

Odell Beckham Jr, Dwayne Bowe, Jarvis Landry, Brandon LaFell, Rueben Randall, are all from LSU.

        • Ura Hogg says:

If LSU ever starts getting QB talent to match, and a coach who knows something about offense, Bama will lose its stranglehold on the SEC.
Some of those receivers you mentioned might have been in Heisman contention if they had gone to a different school.

        • Daryl says:

I meant college production but yes NFL wise can’t deny that LSU has produced in NFL

    • Dana Rogers says:

Didn’t I read something the other day where Mr. Robison and him connected 7/8 times in a row at an invitational or some such? Doesn’t mean we’ll get the signature still… gotta tighten the bond a bit.

    • jonnyBgood says:

I think Mr Kendall may have something to say about that…?

  • SooperDave says:

Regardless of any stars or ratings, Lamb looks to be out best WR Commitment, and everything from articles, to interviews, to his twitter seems to indicate that his commitment is solid. Hope he enjoys his free tour of LSU, but I don’t see him flipping.

    • bigrackhunter says:

Lamb has the size and potential to be a Malcolm Kelly type impact player. Other than Bester and some flashes with Reynolds. We have missed on almost every receiver over 6’2.

      • SooperDave says:

I hate to compare him to a Poke, but he reminds me of Blackmon without the off the field problems.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

I think Reagor is the best. Catches with his hands and is very physical

    • SoonerGray says:

I was watching some of those camp 1 on 1 videos on YouTube, and I honestly thought Lamb looked the best from the guys we have committed. I think Reagor’s highlight film is really head and shoulders better than any of the others, which I value quite a bit. Lamb has a NFL body and very soft hands. Reagor is just blazing fast and a quick twitch talent.

  • DB Beach says:

    Need Quality Defensive tackles.

    • BleedCrimson says:

This team is one of the best ever. Day in, day out, they get it done consistently. They need just one more spot-on performance tomorrow night.

  • SoonerGray says:

I feel like I’m watching Eric Striker when I watch Gumbs’s highlights! Dude get’s up quick, gets skinny and turns the corner FAST! Would love to get his pledge 🙂

  • SamSooner says:

Well, folks, in reading some of the comments from Metz and Doc, I was compelled to take a look at the texsa TFB board. I did not have a chance to see what they could possibly be talking about before I was stopped in tracks.

OSU has a dude in love with a reindeer. This texsa fan is in love with Bevo. I think he must have been emotional when he made this post:

  • RocketCitySooner says:

Something interesting. I went to the UT site. I saw a post to Dr. Leo. I clicked on Dr. Leo and got a listing of all the Discus quotes he’s made on the OU and the UT site. Meztger: you’re there too. Evidently, posts made on either board can be seen.

  • C.A. says:

I honestly see lamb de committing , he’s not as vocal as the rest are about soonerquad17.

    • ccmosaic says:

That is not even close to true. He happens to be one of the most vocal. Not sure what you are seeing or hearing but he is very vocal. He will not de-commit today. I will not say he is ours for good but I think there is a better chance he is a sooner than a tiger this time next year.

      • SooperDave says:

        Ditto

      • C.A. says:

Okay we’ll agree to disagree. But as you eluded to in your statement “I will not say he is ours for good” you feel the same way that he isn’t completely committed, because if he was TFB wouldn’t have brought it up.

    • SooperDave says:

When Cam Akers, the #2 RB in the nation according to 247sports, announced that he received an offer from OU, Lamb was the only member of the 2017 class that retweeted his post and encouraged him to join up. I haven’t heard many other people talk about him, but he is a Stud!

      • C.A. says:

Absolutely agree Cam Akers is a monster and finally got his 5th star. He also put up ridiculous numbers at the opening. I just feel like Lamb isn’t just as solid as the others are. But I did feel differently after him and Robinson got to be teamed up at one of the camps and they actually put on a show. TFB has said for a long time that LSU has been one of the schools he’s been looking at for a long time and if I’m not mistaken he’s from there.

I was also surprised at how obnoxious Wisconsin fans are. But good grief you can go just about anywhere in the state of Texas and see a football game, are ya’ll just not paying attention between the lines?

    • Jim Casy says:

They have a huge crush on Charlie Strong right now because they had a highly ranked recruiting class at the end. Same people will want him fired 5 games into the season.
If Strong was going to be a great hire, it would have showed more by now. You’d figure 8 wins or so. If you look at great coaches who go to powerhouse programs that were a bit down, a little success doesn’t take that long to come by, but instead the whorn fans currently are acting like Strong inherited a program with similar to early Briles Baylor talent level…simply not true. What’d Harbaugh get UM this year, like 10 wins?

As far as fanbases Clemson’s was pretty tough to deal with prior to the CFP. God help us all if they start winning titles.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

I think Strong will be a winner for Texsa. He’s proving to be a very good recruiter, will almost certainly build a tough D, and now seems to be open to letting someone more progressive take over the O.

        • Boom says:

Shane Buechele is the real deal and he will be tuff to deal with for the next 4 years. He was by far the best QB in spring game and will start. It will be difficult cause they can trot in Heard to run/pass. They will be a good combo so we will need to have a good D. I watched Shane in the opening and he is accurate with a deadly quick release.

          • bigrackhunter says:

He definitely looks the part, and has the potential to haunt our nightmares for a few years. But he’s still a true freshman, no matter how many snaps he gets, or how good he looks in skeleton pass drills. Of any position on the field, qbs benefits the most from redshirting, thus protecting their psyche/confidence.

      • bigrackhunter says:

He’s following Mack browns footsteps and bringing in top flight talent. But unless Buechele is the real deal it’s going to be a long year for Strong. No doubt good coaches can squeeze blood from a stone, and know how to utilize the talent that’s inherited, no excuses 3 years in at this point.

    • blaster1371 says:

If Texass can get some consistent QB play this year they will be a tough beat. I think thier defense may be stouter this season. But to think they are on the cusp of greatness is a stretch indeed!

I am ok with a lengthy read. Curious about a team that we are going to be seeing next season.

  • SamSooner says:

Here goes: please excuse the grammatical errors:

Max and I did make it down to the tOSU spring game this past Saturday. Let me say this: wow! Over 100,000 fans made it to the game. It was interesting to hear Urban Meyers say, “I did not want this team’s first time in front of 100,000 fans to be at the season opener.” Is this an admission that he has a young/inexperienced team?

QB: I counted six interceptions, four from J.T. Barrett. One was not his fault: there seemed to be some miscommunication. He threw the ball to an open area, directly to a DB. One has to believe the WR ran the wrong route. However, the other three interceptions were on Barrett. He was forcing the issue. Forcing throws is something that, in my opinion, you don’t want to see your senior do.

Torrance Gibson is playing WR, although he’s listed as a QB on their official roster. (More on Gibson with the receivers.) I thought that was strange. It doesn’t appear he was afforded an opportunity to compete for the position.

Joe Burrow is the number two QB. Burrow impressed me more him than I was with Barrett. I’m afraid if Barrett struggles this year, Meyers will be platooning QBs again. I don’t suspect Meyers wants to do this. So if he does, that’s not good. Burrow is a QB with a live arm. He throws an accurate deep ball and his intermediate throws get to his target quickly. He doesn’t have speed that will overwhelm you but he’s just athletically enough to get out of trouble: he had to scramble a lot on Saturday. It’s going to be a QB battle, next spring, in Columbus when Haskins Jr. gets on campus.

RB: This position was hard for me to determine what the RB situation is going to be like without Ezekiel Elliott. When Barrett was in the game, I saw a lot of empty back sets in the first half. They had a RB out due to injury, supposedly the higher profile back. I can’t recall his name but I’ll research it and provide it later. However, Mike Weber, 2015 commit, 4* RB out of Michigan, provided some flashes that indicates there will not be a drop off in talent. He’s a tough, explosive, gritty runner. Something else to note: tOSU offensive game plan for the spring game had the RBs flaring out in the flat. I don’t know if the intent was to throw swing passes, run wheel routes, or just to simply occupy a defender. I’m not sure because they did this quite a bit in the first half but not one pass was thrown to the RB.

OL/DL: I think the DL won this battle. Whether it was the scarlet or gray DL, they seemed to win the battle. The QBs were under constant pressure and the RBs did not have many running lanes, it seemed. It is my belief that the defense will be the strength of this team. From what I saw on offense, nothing flashy, I think Meyers plans to win low scoring games. If this does not work, the boo-birds will be out early in 2016.

Urban had his team tackling everyone but Barrett. Let me tell you, they needed it: there was a lot of poor tackling yesterday. I would be interested in the YAC (catch or contact) for spring game. I think the success of this year’s team hinges on the success of their defense.

WR/TE: I saw a lot of five WR sets in the first half. I saw this formation with Barrett more than I did with Burrow. As a unit, I was not impressed with the WR group. They did not appear to get good separation and there was a little bit of confusion. They don’t appear to be as rangy as they’ve been in the past. However, they were targeted on a fair amount of deeps shots. The WRs are athletic and at times, (coupled with poor tackling), showed some escapability.

Torrance Gibson, as I’ve mentioned, played WR. He’s 6’4” remember. He appears to have bulked up a bit. He’s athletic and physical, showed great body control; he was inconsistent with his hands. He caught most of the balls that came his way. He didn’t make any tough catches but he dropped several easy throws; one should have been a TD. I watched him quite a bit when he was in the game: he didn’t seem to be fully engaged always. Here’s what I mean. If the ball was coming to him, he didn’t sell his route. He almost appeared to be jogging. There was one play where he stopped and the RB broke a tackle, he had to restart to attempt to make a block. Unless things improve, I don’t see this group being a major contributor to the success of the team.

I’ve been watching tOSU football over 20 years. I’ve never seen them make such an effort to get their TEs involved in the game. I saw that a lot on Saturday. Their TEs are big and physical. They did a nice job of finding opening areas and sitting down. I did not see one drop by the TEs. Passes to the TEs were near or around both hash marks, about 5-10 yards deep. That, to me, means the TEs are working on verticle routes. To repeat myself: I’ve never seen the TEs receive such a deliberate focus.

DBs: Not much to see here. I will say this: the inexperienced WRs were able to get behind their DBs. I recorded the game. I’ll have to watch the game to give my take on this unit.

Mods, I am interested in your take on what I’ve just shared.

    • Oscar says:

      Thanks! nice analysis.

    • bigrackhunter says:

Thanks for the inside info. We all know Meyer is going to bring a team that is stacked in the trenches on both sides of the ball, physical run stopping LBs, and a option qb that will have us screaming at the TV all afternoon. This game is going to be dozy!!

    • BleedCrimson says:

      Thanks Sam. Enjoyed the read.

    • cush creekmont says:

Thanks Sam for taking the time to share with your fellow TFBers. I’ve watched LSU, Alabama, Georgia, and another (I forgot the team) spring games. They ALL tackled (except QBs). The OU spring game has become progressively more boring as Stoops ages. As long as the team does well when it counts, I can’t complain about his strategy. I love OUr football and OUr team, but the spring is so closed and the one game so “unfootball” that it’s a shadow of even the old spring games.

      • SamSooner says:

No problem, Cush. It was my pleasure. I didn’t want to come across as a homer but I honestly didn’t see anything that would make me too concerned. Their tackling was awful.

      • Stephen Dale says:

Other teams have more talent and in greater numbers to afford the team to play an actual spring game…however, I like the idea of showing the opponents very few schemes so I understand Stoops decision to neuter the game.

    • hOUligan says:

Thanks, Sam. I know it’s just a glorified scrimmage, but am sure you got a good feel for the speed and athleticism of tOsu players. Interested in your ‘overall’ impression as well. They are in ‘reload’ mode so I feel pretty good about OUr chances getting them ‘early’, kinda like Tenn. Too many 4-5* recruits who are only going to get much better as the season goes on.

      • SamSooner says:

They’ll find a way to make it close but I’m not too worried. I think we should win.

      • SamSooner says:

hOUligan, the thing that caught my attention the most is the empty backfield with Barrett and not with Burrow. I don’t think they’re in total reload but I’d say they’re not going to cause fear. They will be good but a great team can make them look average. They play Tulsa this year. That game is going to be interesting.

    • Slim Sooner says:

Sam, this is a great read, thanks for sharing. I know tOSU will be good, but I feel better after reading your breakdown for sure.

      • SamSooner says:

Barrett did not look like a starter yesterday. I think we can get to the QB. I wasn’t impressed with their OL.

    • Rick says:

Sam, I think you must be bucking for a scouting position. Nice write up. I know Meyer is a good coach, but somewhat looney tunes. Not in a “I want to be a pirate” Leach type looney (I really have always liked Leach), but in a I may or may not be all right to go out in public by myself looney tunes (I never really cared for Meyer). I think Meyer connects with his players somehow, and seems to coach them up either to having an overachieving team, that really shouldn’t be winning games, or a very under achieving team, like I thought last year’s team was, or his last year at UF. Although this can happen to any team, it seems that you can expect his team to be one or the other. The thoughts that our WR’s possibly being able to lite up his secondary makes me happy. I hope you and Max have a wonderful w/e.

You’re welcome KT. I’m not so worried about them this year. But they’ll be better in 2017. Both teams will be breaking in a new QB. I hope Austin can get some great experience this year.

    • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Dope f***ing write up. While I can’t say I’m necessarily rooting for y’all to win, I can say I prefer it when you’re undefeated going into the RRR. It just makes the game mean that much more. So with that being said, I wouldn’t be “mad”, per se, if y’all take it to tOSU and make the BigXII look good. I really was wondering how they would look with just about half their starters going to the league. It remains a mystery how much of an impact their incoming freshmen could have though. I’m not trolling when I say they definitely had a better class than y’all did, so they “should” have the advantage there. But who’s to say that will make the difference in the game? Either way, with Mayfield tossing the rock, you gotta like y’all’s chances against anybody. Great report, y’all have a good one.

      • SamSooner says:

        Thanks, Unofficial. Thanks for reading.

It’s hard for me to believe they won’t be competitive. tOSU has a tendency to get better each week. But I don’t believe that Urban likes where they are right now. I know he’d prefer using fall camp to get better, not making sure everyone is where they’re suppose to be.

And Barrett, forcing the issue on those INTs; that’s not good.

I would like to think you are right. I know I am missing Denzel. I’m hoping for a 6’3″ 330 lb. DL that has a 36″ waist and runs a 4.6 40. (dreaming?) Have a great Sunday afternoon Slim!

Hello TFB it’s a great day to be a SOONER, and a great Sunday.————-

  • SamSooner says:

Hey, all, I’m sorry for responding so late. Max and I went up to Cleveland to catch the Cavs playoff game.

I’m glad you all enjoyed my observations of tOSU spring game.
Two things I forgot to mention that are worth noting:
    1. Torrance Gibson threw a double pass. He was lined up on the right side; the pass was to the opposite side of the field, about 30-35 yards in distance.
    2. There PK has a strong leg. He hit one from 57 yards out. From where I was sitting, the ball hit the net near the flag pole, with plenty of height. There was a slight breeze helping him but he could nailed a 62 yarder, easily.

  • SamSooner says:

Here of some photos of the crowd at the game yesterday. Over 100,000 out for a spring game.

          • SamSooner says:

Yeah, that was impressive. It was like a game day. There was a lot of stuff happening on and around campus.

          • ALar03 says:

Maybe the sooners should take some notes haha but really i wish we made a little more of a show out of it.. i like how they start in a circle with 1 on 1

          • SamSooner says:

There was about 12 seconds remaining in the game. Meyers reset the clock and added a minute. He wanted to see what would happen. Everyone appreciated that.

          • ALar03 says:

Both qbs struggling early.. I think their defense line is gonna be an issue for us

Dominance. As a little aside here, even though I know most of the us are here for football news, I really want to encourage people to go to all of the other OU sports. We have some of the best programs in the country across the board. Men’s and women’s gymnastics are both national powerhouses. So is softball. Wrestling (one of the most explosive sports you’ll ever see) is a top 20 program every year. Tennis has started to become a national power. I love Perine and Heild, but they can’t do a backflip on a balance beam. Seeing kids, whom for their sport are every bit as athletic as any football or basketball player, is really impressive to watch live. A lot of the events are free, so go support the OU athletes competing.
