Open Post | Tuesday, May 31st

Addison Gumbs: Before the Memorial Day weekend I had a chance to catch up with 2017 DE/OLB Addison Gumbs (Hayward, CA). You will recall that the talented pass rusher visited Oklahoma along with a number of other schools earlier this spring.

Gumbs told TFB that he is beginning to narrow things down and it sounds as though he will make a decision soon. “I plan on committing late next month (June) or early July.” Gumbs also said he has no plans to release a list of top schools, but did share with TFB that the schools primarily in the running are Oklahoma, USC, UCLA, Texas A&M and Oregon. For a while I (K) have felt OU was in a great position to land Gumbs and nothing has changed in that respect.

Gumbs added that he doesn’t mind playing with his hand in the dirt (which he’d be asked to do), but he is accustomed to playing “Jack” LB in a 3-4 type defense, something he’d be doing for OU. He is even doing some defensive back training to sharpen his skills in coverage. Gumbs went on to say “defensive scheme, playing time & coaching stability” are the first few things he looks for in a program.

We left the conversation with Gumbs under the impression he has not entirely made up his mind as to a commitment, but again like where OU stands right now. – (Super K)

Greg Rogers: On Monday 2017 DT & OU offer, Greg Rogers, released his Top 6 and the Sooners made the cut.

https://twitter.com/CityBoyGreg/status/737073880037130241

Rogers is expecting to visit OU this summer, and we can tell you that the entire OU staff is recruiting Rogers. So whatever happens here, it won’t be for lack of effort. – (Super K)

First please close the deal on ROGERS!

    • hOUligan says:

I can understand the love for PAC schools, esp UCLA and SC. And can see some allure in Mich. But the Buffs?? Really?? Nice place to visit but you’re gonna play in relative obscurity. When’s the last time they were relevant or you even saw the Buffs on tv?

      • Ryan says:

I’m happy with seeing them on the list. Makes it easier for us to land him. Now substitute USC with Oregon State and Michigan with Illinois and we are in business.

        • hOUligan says:

I get ya but I really like it when OU gets a guy w/ an offer sheet filled w/ Bama, SC, tOsu type offers over SIU or OSU (take your pick .. both wear that god-awful orange and black combo).

          • Ryan says:

He would still have those offers lol but would cut them off his list for those lower tier schools. We could still say we got him over the big schools. πŸ˜‰

      • CPSooner says:

You never know what ties a kid has. I visited with the nation’s #1 OG, Jack Anderson, as to why a player of his caliber would chose TTU, and he said his dad and uncle played there, and his sister just graduated from there….so you never know weird stuff like that sometimes draws a great player to a mediocre program.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I graduated from a Frisco school and let me tell you, TT and Oki State are homes to many Frisco students. Like you said, everyone has their own reasons.

        • hOUligan says:

Or maybe follow a GF. You only get one shot at being a Sooner, though. ; )

      • McAttack says:

        WEED

        • Ura Hogg says:

That could be a part of their recruiting package. If it isn’t, maybe they should try it. Colorado could suddenly become attractive to a lot of recruits.
Back in the day Ricky Williams likely would have chosen to be sky high legally in Boulder rather than play for Texsa if their current laws had been in place.

      • Dick Bump says:

        Local schools, relatively close.

  • BleedCrimson says:

    Thank you Metz!!!

  • hOUligan says:

    BOOMER and thanks, Metz-man!!!

  • Ryan says:

Would we have a realistic shot at Brandon Bowen if he was released from his LOI? JP Urquidez? Who is our most realistic option? And don’t say Parrish Cobb. No thanks.

    • hOUligan says:

From what a visiting texsa fan was saying, as close as I thought Urquidez was to being a Sooner, JP was said to be closer to being a whorn. Personally, other than maybe Duvernay, not interested in any of them.

      • Ryan says:

        Bowen is an athletic freak.

      • SamSooner says:

I don’t want any player who didn’t want to come to OU. And Cobb, whatever: I don’t like being a toy in his game.

        • hOUligan says:

Thats how I feel. You either WANT to be a Sooner or you don’t. I’d rather keep schollies available for 2017 kids who WANT to be Sooners not a kid who ‘bailed’ out.

        • Bob Edwards says:

The other things that doesn’t get mentioned in these discussions is that Bailer appears to have paid players. Are some of these players going to be eligible if they come to OU?

          • SamSooner says:

            True, So true, Bob.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Can you send a link of an article you read? I’m curious to see what kind of recruiting violations they’re being accused of.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Don’t know of one that outlines the specifics. Part of the process was that they are going to report NCAA infractions. They may not be reporting that kind of infraction, but all indications are some of that was going on. Hard to believe if you are bending the law the way they were, you aren’t shredding the NCAA rule book.

          • Ura Hogg says:

The last thing OU needs is a player coming in with a lot of baggage that could have the NCAA on his heels. The Sooner Schooner is rolling along pretty well right now. It might be best to stay hands off in regard to the Bumbling Bears.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Same here, houligan. DD is nice, but that’s about it.

      • Will Narramore says:

I would take Bowen in a heartbeat. Dude is gonna be a nasty DE

        • hOUligan says:

As I recall, it was close w/ Bowen giving OU strong consideration but even a late visit to Norman couldn’t sway him. OUDNA negative.

      • Unofficial Longhorn says:

I recently learned that UT only has two available scholarships (though 2 more are expected to become available before fall camp). So if the staff is high on Hudson and Cobb, and the feeling is mutual, I can see Urquidez as the odd man out. Personally, I’m good on Cobb. I’d rather save that extra spot for ’17, than spend it on Cobb. We already have enough depth at CB.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Most schools aren’t going to have a boatload of scholarships right now, unless they have a lot of defections. If they did, they already tried to fill them where possible. A good deal of who goes where will be who has scholarships available.

        • hOUligan says:

Speak of the devil …. lol .. Bailer had a good class and some good athletes. Just think OU can do better taking 2017 kids. Oh, and Is Strong telling his recruits ‘don’t commit early’ again so OU or anyone else can’t make a run at them?

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

K, you’ve been on Gumbs for awhile now! Wouldn’t shock me if we landed him based on the info you’ve provided us. Greg Rogers is at the top of my list man. That kid is massive and would look great wearing number 98 ?

    • cush creekmont says:

Vegas – let Rogers know just how great it is to be a Sooner! We all still love Demarco, so we have some LV “love.”

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Everyone on TFB can send me some cash and I’ll accidentally “bump” into him after one of his games this year and give him the brown paper bag filled with cash and that OU hat!

        • cush creekmont says:

Is that you coach Freese? I don’t think Bob S. wants to play that game. But if you tell the young man that he’ll be treated with respect and have a great shot at “the league,” it might mean something to him.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Lol. My hate for Ole miss is so strong. Mainly stems from my ex, but the fact they cheat their asses off and then proceed to give themselves some of the most pathetic self imposed sanctions I’ve ever seen makes me hate them even more. Hopefully the NCAA can add more to those sanctions. I need at least a 1 year postseason ban.

          • cush creekmont says:

Couldn’t help the tease :). I do think their self-imposed “sanctions” are going to be short of acceptable. USC will scream very loud if Miss gets off light. The “upstart” schools are not as likely to get away with something like the “blue bloods.”

          • Ura Hogg says:

Freeze says, “I don’t have any information that anybody on my staff has been involved in any illegal payments to players or offering any inducements to players, and if I did have that information, I would fire them.”
Ok, that quote, if true, means one of two things, either 1) Freeze takes care of all the payments himself or 2) he has trained his staff well to keep all information of such payments completely hidden from him.
            LOL

          • Dick Bump says:

Did he say that? If so, was it before the NFL draft?

          • Ura Hogg says:

Posted from ESPN College Football Page today:

            Chris Low

            ESPN Senior Staff Writer

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze isn’t running from the Rebels’ NCAA troubles, but told ESPN.com on Monday that to accuse him or anybody on his staff of knowingly breaking the rules would be wrong. “The first thing I would say is that I own it. That’s part of it when you’re the head coach. You take the good with the bad,” Freeze said. “But there’s a big difference between making mistakes in recruiting and going out there with the intent to cheat. I don’t have any information that anybody on my staff has been involved in any illegal payments to players or offering any inducements to players, and if I did have that information, I would fire them.”

          • cush creekmont says:

Of course, paying the “electric bill” is not a payoff – perfectly understandable reading of the rules – /sssssssssssss

          • Dick Bump says:

Ain’t that something! He must not have watched his player on TV admit it. I guess he doesn’t consider paying Momma’s rent and utilities cheating.

          • hOUligan says:

Harsh. Those are necessities. It’s not like he bought her a car. /s

          • Dick Bump says:

I feel for them. That would be a tough spot to be in, but de rules are de rules.

          • Jed says:

Ah, Glasshopper! You are forgetting one further, logical possibility: That Coach Freeze is simply Non Compos Mentus and has a literally empty mind.
And before you get defensive about that, consider the strange case of Houston (Mc)Nutt, a man so obviously in the grip of extreme dementia that it beggars the imagination. And yet he walks free to this day. Hell, he probably has a drivers’ license and a deer tag for all I know.
We live in the latter days of the law.

  • Scott says:

I really hope OU lands 5 star WR Joseph Lewis. That dude would be perfect for our offense.

    • Dick Bump says:

He looks like a great player.

    • bommer85 says:

He has scheduled an OV already so that is a good sign. I know we lost Lamb and it looks as if we are not recruiting James Robinson from Lakeland, FL anymore(or we are not in his top atm) so it would be HUGE to get a 5star WR

    • Stephen says:

At the moment it seems like he’s staying on the west coast IMO, but it is intriguing we have not been ruled out. If we start out the season hot, I think we push ourselves above the west coast schools.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Really want Rogers. I hope they roll out the red carpet this summer.

  • j l says:

1 or 2 elite pieces at positions of need will put this class over the top. Rogers is one of those guys. Really hope we land him.

  • Matt says:

excellent class with a lot of great pieces still on the table. Gumbs looks unbelievable. I haven’t really seen either of them in coverage but rushing and playing the run, Gumbs looks better than Browning to me. Then if they could land Hines and Rogers? Incredible class. They don’t have to land a top 10 kid like Okudah or Wilson to have a great class if they land all these other studs.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

You’re right about the top 10 player statement, but then again those players in the last 5 NFL drafts have almost all been first round talent. Sending kids to the NFL at a high rate is almost more important to kids than winning.

      • Matt says:

no doubt top 10 kids are talents and can do a heck of lot of good on the field. I’m just saying you don’t become a national title contender with 1 top 10 kid. You do it with a class full of studs and you don’t have to have a top 10 kid.

    • hOUligan says:

I’m still waiting on that offer to Jalen Harris, WR/DE out of AZ, that Super K intro’d to us a week ago. Not a bunch of stars but another good looking DE/OLB prospect.

  • Jeff says:

Is the whole staff recruiting Wilson?

  • Boo says:

UPDATE: Men’s golf lost 4-1 in match play today. Still a great season!

  • Boom says:

LB recruiting is hard to sort out between all the positions ILB, OLB, & Jack. I prolly missed one but this is what I have hear TFB discuss. Outside of Hines/Browning/Gumbs, who are our key targets
    ILB Draper Hines
OLB Thomas Browning, Gumbs Phillips Taylor Buggs Robinson.

    • Kelt817 says:

2016 WR Corey Henderson coming to OU instead of Tennessee? I heard that is what Henderson wants to do because of grade issues at Tennessee.

      • hOUligan says:

Interesting. 6’1 3* Not a ‘huge’ offer list. TCU, pigs and ‘canes (miami and OK) among others. Louisiana kid so that’s good.

      • Tony B says:

I did see that Gundy and a couple other assistants followed his momma today on twitter! I thought that was strange. Any pick up at WR is good for the depth. He may be that diamond in the rough in a year or two.

      • bommer85 says:

He is going to JUCO, no OU for him yet

      • bommer85 says:

You possess mysterious and magical powers. Use them wisely.

      • cush creekmont says:

It’s the “curse of the false OP.” He is doomed to have a meeting and the OP comes forth to spite his past. I think I read this in Greek Mythology. There was Hercules, Sisyphus, and Metz.

    • RocketCitySooner says:

You must have done much to invite such displeasure from The Brainiacs. Much penitence is in order. Your days in West Texas are beyond number.

  • Randy says:

Rogers seems to be more of a 4i or 5 to me.. Wilson is definitely a inside guy tho.

    • hOUligan says:

Think you could be right. Maybe they’ll both hit the OU camp and see we need both of them.

      • CPSooner says:

I’m envisioning a DL of Bledsoe, Wilson, and Rogers….and I’m slobbering while I do so!

        • hOUligan says:

After signing some great D talent the last couple of years, OU really needs to finish ‘in a good way’ on more top D talent. Nasty begets nasty and OU is building some nasty on D.

      • Randy says:

You would assume that is what they are telling them.. Thinking any combo between Wilson and D Watts inside then Buggs, Rogers and T Graham outside (on the line) would be nice. Buggs is a big one IMO can play all positions and would need him immediately in ’17.

  • pag says:

Any news about 2018 recruits or is it a bit too early

    • Matt says:

we have Brey Walker committed. Top 10 national recruit with potential to be #1 overall recruit before its all over.

      • T. Rob says:

I’ve seen him a couple times in camp. That kid is a stud. I literally thought he was a coach there. He will be able to come in and compete for playing time right away.

    • Ura Hogg says:

Waco and Lubbock are apparently dangerous places these days if you happen to cross paths with football players. It seems though that the Lubbock police weren’t as willing to keep things hush hush as their counterparts in Waco.

Well.. this Baylor situation is really bad for the league.
          League Scope:
We were all talking about how OU, Baylor, and TCU were carrying this league. Baylor is about to get punished…bad. Which would leave essentially 2 quality teams (actual national contention). I hate to say it, but getting the shorthorns to do something would be a plus but they are still at least a 1-2 years away.
This league lost value when Baylor got unveiled as a cesspool.
Losing value when we were desperate in need of it is going to bite our ass.

OU needs to run. They are literally the only team with the clout to do something. GTFO.

      • ccmosaic says:

The only way I would want OU to go to the BIg is if Texas was with them. As much as I hate Texas I also love to hate them. We need Texas as a recruiting pipeline. If we went Big without Texas I think that pipeline would dry up.

Okay Folks, in the spirit of fun, here’s a spin on Metz list he uses when he’s says bye for the day: enjoy.

As always, the day ends in a Metz; here’s what I mean: hOUligan, the troublemaker, causes chaos because he’s lost his MoJo, which causes Fear in the TFB community. Bob is looking good and Slim because he’s down 737. Doc is all Cush because he’s been looking at that Ray of sun, Cheryl; she makes most of the men go Boom, not like the Denzel BOOM! but a boom non-the-less. Jake and Scott are playing Golf until they Bleed. J.r., the dog, tags along and gives an occasional Woof! Dave and Rick drink a cup of Joe that they picked up at the Super K, on the other side of the Jordan river. Sam is still pissed about that fake OP; you know, the one that ripped his soul out like the malicious Malicongs coming on the top rope with a knee to the family jewels; and then Oscar, his tag team partner, gave him 76 skull gongs. Alar, I mean alas, and Robertson came out of the Woods. KJ and Dick were holding a genie’s lamp, Dustin it off. The plan was to ask for untold riches because they were saving their money for Rainy Dayz. Wilson was no longer a castaway had found his Dawg at a junkyard owned by JP. Then the worst of it happened: I’m not going to give him a name nor will I used the acronyms in this post; he said so many stupid things and it got all Electric on the TFB website and I heard it went as far as London. Someone name Jed, who knows TRob (who’s cool by the way) settled everyone down with the reassurance of a committed commit that understands commitment. Jason and Doc got all artistic and Drew an SS17 logo which landed on some billboard in Vegas. Daryl’s Hawk saw that Brien was having a Bear of a time in Colorado decided to hitch a ride on Higg’s rig who was headed to StL via highway 47, a road that is so smooth you will shout to the world that it’s another great day to be a Sooner. Anyhow, I’ll bet that Cadiz and Cav will Garner you that the Brown pigskin has nationwide appeal. If you don’t believe me, ask Mark who lives in Va. Matt and Collin skipped out, went into the alley to smoke a Doobie. They convinced JonnyBGood to be bad and he smoked one too. He’s gone from smoking weed to owning a harem, he officially became a Pimp last June. In the 403, Zack and Shelby kidnapped bevo; they sawed off his horns and painted it red, wrote β€œBoomer-Sooner” on one side and β€œtexsa Sucks” on the other. They tide a sign on the cow’s tail that read OUKnowIt. LCarpeton, David, Framoka, Mike, Ed drove down the Lane that led to Waco and convinced the folks at Baylor to fire Briles. SoonerSD, SD is anything but standard definition; there were plenty of pixels going across the innernut originating from Jim and Chubbs. Sanchez the Raida was acting all crazy like the Boz. He climbed on his Hogg and rode down to the local CC (Country Club), drove across the greens, disregarded the fairways, popped his exhaust until it exploded like a Rocket.

    • SamSooner says:

More intimidation tactics. He needs to keep moving.

Another thing: who is he looking at when he’s not making eye contact with people in the room? Should we call him Gollum? “Us” and “We’s” “Stop it, We’s has to think and get back with us.” “Shhh…listen to us.”

    • KatyOUdad says:

Harbaugh has fired back at Saban Would like to see them play each other.

    • Jdizzle says:

It would be easier to take him seriously if he were not partaking in satellite camps…

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

A solution to the satellite camps would be to put a cap on how many you could do.

ANY news on the decision to set the rule that’ll give Baker another year?

Tomorrow is a big day for Baker Mayfield.

    • Sooner Ray says:

I want the rule to be changed, I just hope it doesn’t have an effect on current QB recruits.

      • BleedCrimson says:

If I could upvote you a 1000+ times, I would. I have very strong feelings on how I feel about how much control a University has over a walk-on. This has very little to do with Baker, but the walk-on in general. If the kid isn’t worth the scholarship, why should a University have any say about where he decides to get his education?!!!? Why should he be punished for going somewhere that appreciates his skills. I love Baker, but this is not so much about him as it is about what is right and what is wrong. Regardless of Bakers future, I would still be against the current rule. Just my 2 cents.

  • Oscar says:

“One very influential Texas source told me Monday β€œthere is a chance (his school could give up the LHN for a Big 12 network but) my guess is it would only be to join another conference with an established network.” “And neither could leave until after 2025 without tons of litigation

    • Oscar says:

β€œWe’ve never had a single conversation, not one about any of these schools,” (expansion candidates) Castiglione said. β€œWe’ve not even got close to vetting one school over another.”

Any chance Baker would stay another year?

    • Dick Bump says:

If he has the year we hope and his draft stock is high (couple of big ifs),I think he takes the money and leaves, regardless of the vote.
