Krys Barnes: Last week Oklahoma continued to work their California connections with an offer to 2016 LB, Krys Barnes (Bakersfield, CA). Barnes is big a fella, standing 6’2 and already 220 pounds. I caught up with him recently and although he already holds a number of offers, he was really excited about OU entering the mix and the prospect of getting to know Tim Kish. He told me, “Coach Kish is really cool. I’m just really excited to get to know him and build a relationship.”

Barnes commented on OU’s California pipeline saying, “of course it plays a huge part in my interest in OU.” And while some OU fans may be a little down on the program coming off the disappointment that was 2014, the reality is the Sooners brand is still very much alive and well. Barnes went on to say, “I am open-minded to all schools…it’s just a blessing to have such a great offer and to be looked at by a program that is one of a kind.”

Barnes is a kid to watch. Don’t be surprised if OU, at the very least, gets a visit out of him. – (Brandon)

Nigel Knott: The expectation coming in was for Kerry Cooks to be one of the top recruiters on this OU staff, primarily due to his previous track record and ability to pull in top talent from all over the country at a school like Notre Dame. Much like now former OU assistant Jerry Montgomery, Cooks is willing to go anywhere and fight anyone for a player he believes in. And it looks like that includes the state of Mississippi. You’ll recall Montgomery beating out both in-state schools, among others, for Gabriel Cambell, and now it would appear Cooks has found a defensive back from the Magnolia state he is quite high on.

Nigel Knott, a 2016 corner out of Madison Central HS, tells TFB he’s been in regular communication with coach Cooks for some time now. Knott is a long, rangy, fast cornerback, who says that his relationship with Cooks dates back to when the latter was still in South Bend. In fact, Cooks is already building a relationship with Knott’s parents (remind you of anyone?) all of whom are working on a trip to Norman for an unofficial visit.

After having a chance to review his film, we believe it’s simply a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if’ Knott receives an offer from Oklahoma. – (Brandon)

Parrish Cobb and Levonta Taylor: A couple 2016 two defensive back names to keep an eye on. Alex and K have had their eye on Cobb (Waco, TX) for a while, who recently told us coach Cooks has been in contact a short time ago. Meanwhile, Taylor (Virginia Beach, VA) yet another DB — with a very impressive offer list — that Cooks has already been working on as well. – (Brandon)

Jean Delance: The 2016 OU commit has confirmed with TFB that he plans to be in Norman next weekend for OU’s Jr. Day #2. As most of you know by now while Bill Bedenbaugh was in on Delance earlier than most and earned an early commitment from him, neither of those facts have slowed other schools from continuing to pursue the talented offensive tackle prospect. In talking to folks around North Mesquite, we’ve been told Alabama has been in touch with Delance quite a bit lately and an offer could be close to being made. How big of a threat the Tide would be to OU remains to be seen, but we’ll know more if/when that offer comes. – (Brandon)

Diron Reynolds: I’ve talked to some folks close to the program and as of yesterday afternoon, OU’s new defensive line coach had yet to meet with any current players. Based on his tweet last night though, it sounds like that is about to change very quickly.

As most of you know, I’m a big fan of the defensive side of the ball and particularly DBs and the DL. So I’ll definitely be keeping my ear to the ground and let you know what I hear as far as what kind of initial impression Reynolds makes with the current players and prospective recruits. – (Super K)

Shane Buechele and David Moore: Most of you probably know by now that early OU 2016 quarterback offer Shane Buechele committed to Texas last night. While following up on that, I stumbled across a new quarterback name that OU appears to have been in touch with. Dual-threat David Moore out of Alpharetta, Georgia shared with me that he has been in contact with coach Drew Hill. It’s still pretty early in the whole process of things, so an offer isn’t necessarily imminent or anything. But I wanted to mention him just so those of you who love to review film as much as we do get a chance to take a look. Moore already holds offers from Illinois, Oregon State & Wake Forest among others. – (Super K)

New DB Philosophy: Since returning from my trip, I’ve been looking at some of the 2016 DB prospects Kerry Cooks has offered. I’ve also been reviewing film on a number of prospects we at TFB have been paying attention to that maybe aren’t necessarily on OU’s radar just yet.

I have been told that Cooks is planning to bring a new philosophy/approach to the OU secondary and it should more close resemble what we saw during the 2013 season. Specifically, much more of an emphasis on man coverage. And I believe you can expect that coverage to be more of a ‘in your face’, press technique type of coverage.

While it’s certainly important for a DB to be able to play off, press, and the various techniques within those respective alignments, the actual call will often dictate the alignment. But, again, I have been told that tighter alignments are to be expected, which is welcome news considering how soft some of the coverages were at times this past season.

To that point, I wanted to again hit on Parrish Cobb. Alex first brought this young man to my attention, who I believe has three fundamental qualities that you love to see in a press corner: ball skills (ability to get his head turned around and track), physicality & speed…speed…speed. I emphasize speed because as a general matter, it is something OU has been missing recently in the secondary and is something coach Cooks seems hell bent on remedying.

While in the past OU would look for a ‘big’ corner and could live with maybe a little less speed, meanwhile you see a team like TCU take speed over almost anything and everything else. In fact, TCU brought in a 5’11” CB with blazing speed this last recruiting cycle, who they actually plan on converting to a safety. That’s how important speed is to Gary Patterson. TCU was one of KeShawn Somerville’s first offers despite being only about 5’10”. Why? Because he ran a sub 4.4 at their camp. Somerville is still raw and even with his great speed sometimes trails the route, but you just can’t teach that kind of speed.

And Cobb is kid that right away on film you can see has that extra gear. In his film below on the very first play you’ll see some poor form — he lunges on the play, a no-no for a DB — but even on that one play you get a couple clues about Cobb’s mentality and ability.

First, it demonstrates his aggression and desire to get his hands on the wide receiver. Lunging like that in college will get you lit up, but I love to see a high school defensive back that wants to beat up on a receiver. Once the WR gets a release and a step, Cobb shows off his recovery speed by turning and chasing him down. Again, that is the kind of speed you just can’t teach.

You may recall Baylor’s defensive backs draped all over OU’s wide receivers in recent years. And that’s because Coach Buckels and the Baylor staff teach their players to play that type of style are comfortable taking chances with their speed and a physical approach to defending opponents. In fact, that’s exactly why, in my opinion, you’ve seen Baylor improve defensively. Thus it came as very little surprise to me that Baylor was in fact Cobb’s first offer from a Big 12 school.

Cobb is the kind of player who, when taught technique and is cleaner within his overall efficiency of movement, could really develop into a true shutdown corner. I really like that OU and coach Cooks are after this young man. Oh, and a big kudos to Alex for finding Cobb so early. – (Super K)

UPDATE (9:36 am): OU coaches continue to try and make inroads with the hotbed of talent in Louisiana, this time with an offer to 2016 DE/OLB Pernell Jefferson (New Orleans, LA). It is also worth noting that Jefferson is a teammate of 2015 OU signee Arthur McGinnis.

– UPDATE (10:46 am): Kerry Cooks still working, extends offer to one of the top DBs in the 2016 class, Chauncey Gardner (Cocoa, FL).

– UPDATE (11:20 am): Busy day for new OU offers as another one goes out to 2016 ATH David Long (Los Angeles, CA).

– UPDATE (1:09 pm): Continuing the trend of the day, OU has also now offered 2017 OT Wyatt Davis (Bellflower, CA).

update added before there was even a single comment. damn, I’m good.

    • Zack says:

I think linebacker is obviously the main focus for 2016 and with all the offers plus the terry kid from the Dallas area being rumored to be close to a decision at any time, all of that bodes well for kish.

      • Mr. Jones says:

I hadn’t heard this rumor? I know TFB has said he’s close with McKinney. If he pulls the trigger soon, I’m guessing the favorite is OU?

  • Randy says:

Monty is gone, let’s move on..

  • Will Narramore says:

Would it be considered a failure if OU didn’t sign a QB again this year? I get that you want to sign one pretty much every class but even next year Mayfield Knight Thomas and Hansen will all still be on campus

    • Jordan Esco says:

Yes, very much so. I don’t care how many guys you have on campus right now, there is no way they can go two straight classes w/o a QB. And while I’m obviously not an OU coach (spoiler alert), I can all but guarantee you this 2016 class won’t be missing a quarterback.

      • Sooner 76 says:

I agree. Riley will definitely get an excellent QB in this class. It will be a great situation for a HS QB, with no QB last year, two of the four being juniors, and a great offense.

      • j l says:

Who would even be a reasonable target at this point? costello and haskins have to be considered longshots.

Not too worried about them grabbing a QB, but pretty concerned about them grabbing an elite one.

        • Jordan Esco says:

I think they could have a shot w/ Haskins, but only time will tell. I do not feel the same re: Costello. I think that one is a real long shot, at best.

I’m fully expecting Riley to make at least another offer or two.

          • j l says:

did you think texas was a major player for haskins? wondering if buechele heading to them makes him rethink UT.

Hoping he makes some more offers as well. Gotta plant lots of seeds to start.

          • Jordan Esco says:

Couldn’t really say re: Texas. I know he had a visit planned there (may have just recently taken it, can’t remember). And, yes, I would think Buechele committing would definitely hurt Texas’ chances w/ Haskins if he was seriously considering them.

          • j l says:

            Appreciate it.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Zero chance they don’t get a QB on campus from this class. They have to. No program can go two years in a row without signing a QB.

  • Brad Warren says:

It was pretty obvious IMO that our hoopsters thought it only necessary to show up in Lubbock to get a win. As we all know and saw, that wasn’t the case. While the opportunity to control our own destiny is certainly exciting with last night’s result in Manhattan, it’s vital not to look past TCU. I think the the guys realize that even more because of tech game so it should make for great entertainment.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      huh?

      • Brad Warren says:

Open post, just talking a little hoops.

        • Scott Moore says:

I agree Brad. I’m more worried about the game on the road against Iowa State. They gave us all we could handle at home. If we bring anything less than all we have, we are toast in Ames. And then the March 7th showdown with Kansas won’t matter much as far as conference race. I would love to see Texas pull one out of their butts this Saturday and steal a win from rock chock. Make the OU vs Kansas game for the untied season championship. Come on Buddy love, heat it up!

    • stfaulk says:

Can’t wait to be in Norman on Saturday!! Just hope the weather allows me to make the 5 hour drive!

  • Super K says:

Love that Kish is getting aggressive with these offers. Not hesitating like he seemed to do last year. Good sign

    • F1at1ined says:

Not to defend what he did in terms of offers yesterday, but one does wonder if he was really told last year that we were only taking a couple of LBs which did make him more picky/choosy. Probably not but its possible I guess. Either that or he was told he had to be more proactive and offer everyone worthy and we’ll fight for as many as we can get.

    • Malicong says:

Gives me the feeling that Kish is viewing this a make-or-break kind of year. Sometimes a little fire can produce good things.

    • boomersooner says:

You know more than I. And you have way more connections than I. What do you, personally, think about we were actually only going after a couple this yr? To me, with kish waiting to offer on guys and whatnot, it makes sense that we were indeed going to sign just a couple. Everything, including his aggressiveness this yr, seems to point to it

Edit: seems “flatlined” already mentioned this but I’m going more towards the people who are kinda flat out done with stoops and won’t believe anything he ever says

  • Glocal Sooner says:

Thanks Super K. I’ll be very interested to hear the reaction players have to Reynolds. I mean, I don’t really expect any negative feedback to be public but hopefully he has a great first impression on our current players and our recruits that have built a great respect for Monty.

  • Andy Sundborg says:

Jefferson kinda plays all over the field. He’ll go from a 3 point stance one play to covering the slot next

    • F1at1ined says:

Always nice having a Jefferson roaming on D. Hope he can be as good for us as Tony was. Definitely a good sign that he is a teammate of McGuinness. Here’s hoping they are good friends, and/or McGuinness gets involved in recruiting his former teammate.

  • Mike Reed says:

Thought i’d throw it up on the Open Post as well…New prototype helmet…..

    • Roger Nixon says:

I’m pretty much a traditional guy but I like that!!

    • Malicong says:

I am not on board with the alt uni’s most of the time, but I actually really like that.

    • Scott Moore says:

Man, I got to say. I love this helmet.

    • Dustin Brasel says:

      No. Just no.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

      I love it…that’s just awesome.

    • shawn says:

I really like this. I know a lot of people are against multiple alternate uni’s ,but I’m all for it. Even if it’s just a change to the helmet and noting else.

    • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Now that. Is pretty dang cool. Not just representative of the university, but of the state. If we’re gonna change it up, let’s bring meaning to the changes. Looks like that’s exactly what’s going on here.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      **QUICK POINT**

I’m not sure if this is even necessary, but just to avoid any possible confusion. This is NOT something that’s coming from OU or even something they’re considering. It was simply an independent design done by someone not affiliated with the university.

I’d put the chances of OU even remotely considering something like this at about 0.000001%.

Not trying to rain on anyone’s parade, I just didn’t want anyone thinking this was something that was coming down the pipe from OU or anything.

      Carry on.

    • Boom says:

What about putting the new stadium with OU in the middle. 🙂

    • nicjams says:

Sick helmet… I also liked the alts from last year. I wish OU would change the white on their uniforms to more of a cream color though. That would be sharp IMO.

      • SoonerSpock says:

Absolutely. Cream pants would not look great but would also be universally unique. The basketball team in past has on occasion worn cream home uniforms instead of the standard white and they look great. Have never understood why they do not adopt the school colors as their standard home unis.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

      I don’t like it. TRADITION

      • Rick says:

I was much like you until last year. I started looking back at the changes of the OU helmet throught the past years and found that, much to my dismay there was no tradition to the helmet. I had gotten used to the interlocking OU and completely forgot about anything else. In my mind it had always been that way and would always stay that way. Not so. The helmet has gone through changes all along (not taco tech or Oregon timing) but gradual conservative changes through the years, pretty tasteful, slow, somewhat meaningful changes, that seemed to mean something rather than OK we need a new alt uni every game mentality. I don’t particularly like this alt design, but it is somewhat meaningful. I would probably bitch about it for a while and hope that something else would come along, but don’t get caught up like I was thinking the pre-2014 season helmet was the helmet of tradition, it was not.

    • Chris White says:

I think this would be cool to use as a midfield logo for the Spring Game like they did last year when everyone voted.

    • Sooner_Ace says:

      i’m down with the design.

    • Brad Warren says:

Let me preface by saying, I’m not opposed to alternate uniforms on occasion to enhance recruiting or whatever but this is just awful!

    • Daddy R says:

Yea, its ok. I like the new white helmet from last season much, much better…

  • Andy Sundborg says:

I like Barnes he’s a hitter and finds the ball

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

    Like the Jefferson offer…

  • Super K says:

Another thing I love about what Kish is doing is he’s not only being aggressive with his offers, but he’s finding the RIGHT kids to offer…the kids he can get. The most recent is a great example because in all likelihood Jefferson is close to McGinnis. Your batting average in the recruiting game is so much about knowing where to dig for water. Keep it up Kish. He’s got to prove it on the field and in the recruiting world but props to him for the obvious changes.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

I appreciate the positive notes about Kish, I was also included in the bashing but will fully support him moving forward and hope he kills it this year and makes us all look foolish.

      • Super K says:

The criticism was warranted. But as you said, it’s time to turn the page and give him a chance to right the ship. If he does that then great. If he doesn’t then we will be critical again. It’s not a personal attack but everyone on staff is here to serve OU and if they cannot do that effectively then this isn’t the right place for them. But as I said, it’s time to give the man a chance to prove he is right for OU. I hope he pulls it off cause I know he’s one heck of a nice guy.

        • Lincoln Hawk says:

Agree 100%. As a business owner, it is hard at times to make or even talk about the necessary changes without it getting personal. But in the end, you have to produce or be replaced by somebody that will.

          • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Or redefine your approach or remove the obstacles preventing you from performing.

        • Boom says:

Everyone has to reinvent themselves if they want to continue to be successful. And this is not a decade long decision, this is yearly.

        • Randy says:

          Striker, Evans, Alexander, Ogo.. ?

        • Sooner 76 says:

I’m fine with your criticism b/c you are very specific about what you criticize, as opposed to people who just repeat the “Fire Kish” or “Fire Josh” without stating why.

          • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

I’ve been asking for this for a while now. Almost every response to me is the same. “How can you not see why he’s so bad?!” My response, in one way or another is “Because you and everyone else can’t describe why he is…”

    • shawn says:

You may have covered this before and I apologize if you have, but does this give any type of validation to what Stoops said about getting the number they wanted at LB this year? IMO a guy isn’t going to change his approach so drastically basically over night, which to me indicates they really were being more selective with who they wanted and/or who they were willing to take last year.

      • Super K says:

Last year they wanted 4 LBs including two ILBs. They took 2 OLBs. In my estimation Kish has indeed drastically changed his recruiting style. Much more aggressive. I could be wrong but that’s how I read it.

        • shawn says:

Thanks for the answer I wasn’t aware of the exact number they wanted last year. If he has changed his approach that hopefully means he has learned from some of the other coaches on staff, which would obviously be a good thing.

        • Glocal Sooner says:

This is a really good sign. I have always felt that he did a great job coaching the players he has. I know many disagree with the play of our LB’s recently but I personally have felt like they played really well. They may be undersized at MLB but for the most part have played to the best of their ability and he’s done a great job teaching them.

          • JTrain51 says:

I disagree the lb’s have been lost in pass coverage and the middle of the field was consistently open. As the year went on they seemed to play slower and more unsure of themselves which would suggest a coaching liability.

          • Glocal Sooner says:

I knew someone would disagree with me on that and mention the pass coverage and the middle of the field. I don’t think that’s a Kish issue. I think the whole defense played slower and more unsure of themselves. I think that falls on Mike, not Tim. Tim was probably as confused as the LB’s were as to what Mike was trying to do. Goes back to my opinion that we have plenty of talent on the roster to win a NC. I even thought last year we played well enough on offense most of the season to win a NC but our defense was not even in the same league as a NC team and it was coaching, not players that were the problem.

        • wynwilliams64 says:

Could the addition of Mike to the LB recruiting be a reason for the aggressive approach?

        • BoomerDave says:

K, not sure where you got the number 4 from, but most sites were reporting that we were only going to take 2 LB’s last class and Bob confirmed it on signing day. I’m sure that you’ve heard what he said after the class was in, but in case you missed it, he said (and I paraphrase) that they were being very selective since they only wanted two LB’s, and they were very pleased with the two that they got.

          • Boom says:

BDave, K is close to what is going on so I would tend to believe him. I don’t think BS would come out and say, hey, we wanted 4 but 2 is OK. BS had to put his spin on it for the media since they and everybody else was all over Kish. It was a way for BS to support Kish and him keeping him on staff.
Interesting how aggressive Kish is this year. Kish is in a corner and he knows it and he’s coming out fighting.

          • BoomerDave says:

Could be right, Boom. But the only number I ever heard all last year was 2, and I have a source ( neighbor directly across the street) who is a high up in the Football Office who tells me a lot of things that are contrary to what I read on here and other sites. So far, he’s batting 1000% on what he has told me, most recently that Wariboko was not signing with OU. He told me that on the Saturday before signing when others were saying how great his visit was going, I knew that there were serious problems.

          • Boom says:

That’s cool, but if this is correct, it’s a little shocking to me.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Any hint on why their were problems for Wariboko?

          • Indy_sooner says:

Not sure what problems you’re referring to. The dude dragged on his recruitment knowing full well he was never coming to OU. My understanding is we would NOT take his brother so when UCLA came along, it was all moot. While I can respect looking out for your brother, the charade was uncalled for IMHO

          • BoomerDave says:

I don’t think that is true. I think OU was very much in the picture until about 10:30 that Saturday morning.

          • Sooner 76 says:

The trip to OU the last weekend was just a smoke screen to add drama to his signing-day announcement. He wanted to go to UCLA, all along, which is his right. I agree that he should pick his school and not his parents. Nevertheless, I don’t respect how he played OU the last week. He asked Gabe to follow him and he released very misleading tweets. Apparently, he even fooled his mom. Don’t hate the kid, just don’t agree with what he did.

          • BoomerDave says:

Not without breaking a promise to my neighbor. But suffice it to say, that when he tweeted out that Saturday morning that he now knew for sure where he was going to play CFB, I like most on here assumed that he meant OU. My neighbor said that was when he knew that it wasn’t OU due to things that we’re going on with him at the time.

          • Super K says:

I was always told 2 OLBs to ILBs. Obviously that changed as the chances of landing guys became slimmer and slimmer. You’ll recall that OU was still trying to get Josh Smith while still recruiting McGinnis and they would have been willing to take both. They also offered Dwaine Thomas late which would have indicated they would’ve taken him as well.

        • Randy says:

I am not sure how many good fit ILB there were last year seems like a lot more this year or maybe more of a idea of how the want to run the 3-4 as well.

        • boomersooner says:

Hey please don’t take this as bad or snarky but are you saying Bob lied or tried to save face with his we only wanted 2 comment? I’m not a twitterer or anything and I’m not looking to smear you. Just wondering if that’s what happened. Sorta “we got 2 and that’s what we wanted” type bandaid or something or what you thought

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

And with Jefferson’s video we get to see more of McGinnis. I’d hate to get into a scuffle with Arthur. He’s a big dude.

Check that. I’d run fast in the opposite direction before anything escalated to a scuffle.

    • JTrain51 says:

How much of this do you attribute to Mike also coaching lb’s. The defense has had it’s problems since Mike has been back but I think he’s ranked in the top 25 or 30 recruiters every year since his return. At least according to 1 website.

  • Boom says:

Really like Barnes angles and speed. It’s a tough call between him and the big MLB (forgot his name) from the Houston area. He’s a stud too and goes about 235. Both of these guys are my top ILB picks. Last year my pick was Griffin but…… Hope we can get these two.

A big NO on the helmet!!!!

  • nicjams says:

Why do people talk about OU’s current uniforms like they’re untouchable and “tradition?” The only uniform tradition OU has is the colors.

    • nicjams says:

I’m personally a huge fan of the ’38 and ’39 unis. I like the block O on the front of the helmet.

      • Jordan Esco says:

I suppose it’s b/c the ppl in charge clearly feel the way you’re describing and have shown very little desire to stray from/alter the current version of OU’s uniforms.

        • BoomerDave says:

OU has an identity. When one is flipping channels, there is no doubt who you are watching the second you see an OU helmet. Schools like OSU, Baylor and Oregon, who change their helmet like they change their jock strap, have no identity, IMO.

          • Daddy R says:

In a way though, it has BECOME their identity.(not saying I’d want us to do that, I like the 4 we have.) But, when I hear of any of those teams you mentioned, I think multiple, multiple, flashy uniform combinations. I think that, and then I think I hate those teams..

          • nicjams says:

Same thing can be said for Oregon as well and they wear a different uniform every week. If anything it makes them MORE recognizable. OU won’t have an identity problem of they update their uniforms.

          • Daddy R says:

We have updated them. The new uni’s are perfect, and still hold our “tradition” easily. And they are easily recognizable. I would not want all the “flashiness” and crazy combinations though.. I like the new ones because they are awesome, and still look traditionally Sooner.

    • Daddy R says:

I agree completely. I LOVE the new alternate uni’s and wish they’d wear them at least 50-60% of the time…

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

      See Boomerdave’s comment

      • nicjams says:

I strongly disagree with this argument. I would say that to the casual CFB viewer, they wouldn’t have any idea if they were watching OU… Or Bama… Or even Indiana (identical uniforms to OU by the way) until they actually see the ticker at the top of the screen or the midfield logo.

        • boomersooner says:

He did say the OU on the helmet

          • nicjams says:

Yes, but can you really see something that small on TV? Or in the stands? Doubt it.

          • boomersooner says:

I kinda like tradition. I was “born older” or old school. However, if its classy, then I’ll like it. I think that’s where you are too. I don’t want 38 combinations of shiny just to have it. That’s so Oregon and copy cat Baylor 🙂

          • BoomerDave says:

Nic, if your in the stands, you probably already know who’s playing!! Just saying…

          • nicjams says:

Lol! True… I think you know what my point is though.

        • Boom says:

Even the casual CF viewer knows the major brands. They have heard of the OU’s, Bama’s, etc.

          • nicjams says:

Yes, but you’ve missed the point. Everybody in America knows about OU football. We’re talking about “identity” or whatever that means. The only identity and tradition OU has is winning.

          • Boom says:

I’m not trying to argue, just saying from a marketing point, winning has created a brand. That brand has had pretty much the same uni’s since the mid 50’s which is the boosters or paying customers. Why doesn’t Polo change their horse?

          • nicjams says:

I’m sure Polo isn’t still making the same stuff they were back then… They wouldn’t be in business anymore.

          • Boom says:

Just like OU, they changed the fabric to match today’s standard but not their money maker.

          • nicjams says:

They’ve definitely updated their style though. They aren’t making 50s fashions anymore.

        • Lane Gilstrap says:

Maybe they need a larger TV.

        • BoomerDave says:

Lots of teams wear a variation of red in their unis, but it’s the helmet that distinguishes one team from another. Don’t mess with our interlocking O and U!!

          • nicjams says:

What about the 1939 helmet? It’s pretty sick. They could definitely put a modern spin on that too

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Since 1969, it looks like the uniforms have change very little. That’s over 45 years of the same uniform concept. Perhaps that’s why.

    • boomersooner says:

On my phone so hard to see. But would love a throwback day of the ’29? units, the ones with the dreamcatcher. “I like it a lot”

      • Drew says:

I personally love the old school ’04 jerseys. They just scream badass and tough to me.

        • boomersooner says:

The stripes? If yes….then yes please. Those are cool too

          • Drew says:

Yeah, the striped ones. Shows a lot of old school, ground and pound grittiness that I think trumps the “tough” looks of today.

          • Rick says:

Everyone knows you can’t run as fast, or jump as high while wearing horizontal stripes. If you go with stripes they must be vertical, to be able to both perform better and to confuse the refs when necessary.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

Looking at that makes me think….can you imagine the uproar in 1985 when Sooners was added to the front of the jersey? Tradition!

    • Sooner Ray says:

I don’t mind minor changes as long as they are actual changes and not the “guess what we’re wearing this week” game that is getting too common.

      • Sooner 76 says:

From 1948 to now, the only significant change was the red helmet, introduced by Mackenzie when he arrived in 1966. He brought the Arkansas offense, defense, and red helmets. The numbers on the sleeves and the name on the front were minor compared to the red helmets.

The old helmet was very typical of its time, replacing the leather helmet. The helmet was two pieces, with a piece in the middle to hold the two halves together. That middle piece was almost always painted a different color than the two sides. Hence the white helmet with the single red stripe.

The long-sleeve jerseys had the triple stripe on the sleeve and the short-sleeve jersey had no stripes.

        • Steve Johns says:

Mackenzie got hammered by ” old traditionalists.” They were saying he was trying to make us “look like Arky!” Now I’m one of the old guard and don’t mind change at all, as long as the colors stay the same. No black, chrome or primer gray.

          • Sooner 76 says:

Correct. I remember well. The red helmets grew on me pretty quickly, but I do love the old white ones as well.

          • Steve Johns says:

I’m fine with either. Too bad rule changes eliminated the old tear away cheese-cloth jersey. Opponents couldn’t get away with pulling them down by the shirt. lol

    • PCSooner says:

I could never figure out why our uniforms were displayed in front of Nebraska’s stadium.

    • Drink14me says:

It’s not like we’re changing the team name.

    • Buster Rhymes 4 says:

Lets try the khaki pants crimson and cream stripe, Crimson top (OU on top of pads- cream)- Home ,Khaki top(ou on top of pads – crimson and cream)- visitor, with khaki leather helmets with crimson OU. That’s what I’m talkin” bout…

    • captfoss says:

Exactly how many years does something have to stay the same before it’s a tradition? Helmet has been the same basic design for 45 years, uniform has had the same look for 50 years and almost the same configuration for 30…

  • Jordan Esco says:

update added – yet another new offer today

  • Jeff says:

Getting very nervous about the QB position!!!

  • KJ1123 says:

Here’s a kid from Northern California (Sacramento). Won MVP at Rivals LV for DB. Only has a few offers. Has some good speed for a kid his size.

    http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2276867/highlights/210100391/v2

  • Sooner Ray says:

I really like the Knott kid on film, looks like one hell of a player.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Bills are pursuing a trade for Sam Bradford…

    • Steve Johns says:

Please not the Bills or Browns.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

I feel for Bradford, but the guy never really stood a chance. Critics may want to drag him down, but he had a head coach and a new offensive cordinator every year. How is a guy suppose to make an adjustment and have a chance on learning the system if it changes every year. Yeah, he had some injuries but the QB progress at St. Louis is beyond injuries.

I really think he could have been an elite QB if he would have gone someplace that had a decent clue on what they wanted, let alone if they cared about protecting thier QB. Those first 3 years were straight up brutal.

  • Jordan Esco says:

    update added

  • Glocal Sooner says:

Blows my mind to even think about recruiting kids so young not to mention offering a kid before he even plays his junior year of high school but if that’s the expectation now, I’m glad OU is identifying some and getting involved early with these kids. Hopefully it pays off.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Dwayne Haskin just tweeted: Love Oklahoma #BoomerSooner…Sorry I would post it here but not sure how.

    • hOUligan says:

LSU in and ‘Bama expected to call. Going to be very tough to hang onto Delance.

      • Glocal Sooner says:

Hopefully the fact that we got in so early pays off. Obviously didn’t with some guys last year who committed early then decommitted and went elsewhere but I like Bill’s chances.

  • hOUligan says:

Couple of thoughts on Cooks and the DB situation. Have to wonder how much autonomy Coach Cooks will really have with Mike looking over his shoulder. And if there is a philosophical shift so to speak back to speed over size, will Windham, Austin and Taylor be factors again?

    • Hotrod33 says:

The worst thing that Mike could do is step on Cooks toes and not let him teach what needs to be done. That is why Mike is coaching OLB’s instead. I thought I saw somewhere that Windham has some speed but not sure.

  • DCinAZ says:

Pernell Jefferson is a big dude for a highschool LB.

  • Steve Cooke says:

Hey K can you check out this young DT’S hudl out & see what you think. He dm’d me seeing if I can help him get some Sooner fan attention. His twitter is @gahhscoop http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3922399/highlights/195346375

    • thebigdroot says:

Sorry that is rough to watch. Bad camera angles and get’s lost in the scrum. Did notice he was standing up rather quickly and relied on his strength to move the Center/Guard. Seen him pushed off the line a few times. Still young and these are fixable but just my non-expert opinion.

    • Clint Lenard says:

I had that happen to me. Some little kid named Joe Mixon DM’d me thinking I worked for Rivals. Pretty funny.

  • Brien Brown says:

I may be overthinking, well maybe overly positive but, with the names I am seeing that we have made offers too and the kids that have seemed to have shown they are buying into what we are doing. I can’t help but, think this incoming class though may be small in numbers could be huge in production. All the kids on film look solid and I am sure we are going to land some big names. My theory is Stoops hiring the non big names, means he is moving away from the normal and giving up and comers a shot and I think this approach could pay off in a big way. First we have to see what happens on the field but I am super excited about this upcoming season and the recruiting year. I feel like big things are on the forefront for the SOONERS!

  • Jeff says:

What other qbs you think OU will offer?

    • Brien Brown says:

If the can get Haskins Jr. they won’t need to make another one.

      • Jeff says:

Agree but 5% he comes to OU

      • KJ1123 says:

Still early, have to see who is out there after the spring and summer camp/combines..

      • Jordan Esco says:

Both of these guys already have OU offers and both are also not coming to Norman.

        • Brien Brown says:

Well see out of the loop, I thought OU would offer them and guess they did but, clearly they where worth mentioning lol. Haskins is a priority in my books, as I am sure it is with the coaches as well.

        • Ryan says:

Okay negative Nancy (nickname fits you well Jordan), the season hasn’t even started yet. We may have an explosive offense under Riley and that may be all it takes to get a big time qb on campus. Also we signed no qb last year which would make it more intruiging for them. We have 2 heisman winners under stoops at qb and a heisman runner up. I’m not giving up hope.

          • Jordan Esco says:

You’re welcome to do whatever you like, and apparently call me whatever names you’d like.

Guarantano has already eliminated OU from consideration, but if you want to ignore that fact and continue to hold out hope you’re certainly welcome to do so.

Many people who would know much better than I would have already said Costello is very, very unlikely to leave the west coast.

But, again, don’t let me stop you from ignoring the reality of things. I’ll just be over here being negative I guess.

        • John Garner says:

When you say “both of these guys” are you referring to Costello and Guaranatano? Or just Haskins? I ask because I saw it posted here that Haskins “loves” OU.

          • Jordan Esco says:

            Costello & Guarantano

          • Jordan Esco says:

And I’d be careful reading too much into Haskins’ tweets. Just prior to the one you referenced, he said something about how he couldn’t wait to play w/ someone at LSU. And has said publicly that he likes to get ppl riled up on Twitter w/ some of what he says.

          • John Garner says:

Oh! My bad. Thanx for the insight.

        • SoonerMGB56 says:

On what do you base your definitive proclamation of fact that neither will come to Norman?

          • Jordan Esco says:

Guarantano has already eliminated OU from consideration & Costello is almost assuredly going to stay out west.

    • Brien Brown says:

      K.J. Costello and Jarrett Guaranatano.

    • Steve Johns says:

Garrett from Mustang is a possibility.

    • Brien Brown says:

I still think they should consider Mason Fine form Locust Gove, kid is accurate yes undersized at 5’10-5’11 and about 178 but, Drew Brees was small also, kid can air it out and yea he is a product of his systems offense but, OU will run a system offense.

      • Ryan says:

We need qbs that can make big time plays in big time games, not system qbs. We aren’t texas tech.

        • Brien Brown says:

Agree to disagree then. We did well with QB’s that aired it out in a spread O, yet now we went to trying to get dual threats didn’t work out well. A QB better know how to throw first and throw second and throw third and then run if need be, IDGAS if he is a sys QB as long as the kid can complete a pass you catch my POV sir.

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

More than likely, we end up with an Oklahoma kid.. Chandler Garrett or Micah Wilson…

  • BoomerDave says:

Found it interesting that OSU offered a 9th grade OL from Southmoore, without even having an OL coach hired.

    • Steve Johns says:

Southmoore had a pretty young team last year. Kendall Thompson’s little brother was the starting QB as a freshman.

      • BoomerDave says:

Yes he was and he looked really good for a Fr. Just wonder if the OU staff wants to deal with his dad again.

        • Steve Johns says:

The kid is going to be a big time recruit but I don’t like OU’s chances of getting him.

          • Brien Brown says:

If it’s anything like his brother’s situation was then we are better off without the headaches and the trouble.

          • Defend Colfax says:

Kendal is a good kid. Graduated early and everything. What are you talking about?

          • Brien Brown says:

Talking about dealing with his dad. Kendall was a kid for sure, but heard his dad was terrible to deal with.

          • BoomerDave says:

Not sure that ever interfered with the coaches directly regarding Kendall, but he went on the radio complaining about his son’s playing time and the coaches decision to okay others ahead of Kendall. Perhaps Charles has learned from his mistakes regarding Kendall because Casey is going to be much bigger and better than Kendall.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Think I heard our commit, Q Overton, is going to wrestle against this 9th grader sometime in the next few days.

      • EasTex says:

Q better win that match, fo’sho’.

        • Sooner Ray says:

Should be interesting, both have 30+ wins and few losses. I would hope the Senior would have the upper hand but you never know, strange things can happen in a wrestling match.

  • EasTex says:

Thanks for all the info and updates. It may seem slow to us observers, but it is clear that there is a great deal going on with the coaches and recruits.
Haven’t seen all the videos just yet. but Krys Barnes not only looks good on film, but based on his statement he is a smart young man and I like smart players.

  • Tmac says:

ESPN has DeShawn Lookout (WR, Westmoore) listed as a 2016 commit. Is that accurate? I thought we only had two 2016 commits.

  • SECsooner says:

Not sold on the Parrish Cobb kid. He seems to lack that suddenness of movement that I like in corners. He’s gonna need A LOT of coaching. On the other hand, Nigel Knott and David Long are absolutely sensational. We need to get them.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Glad to hear guilty, just wish it was by firing squad.

      • EasTex says:

Well, having followed and written about death row inmates in Texas for several years, ever since LWOP was introduced a few years ago prosecutors haven’t been seeking the death penalty as often. Seeking and getting a death penalty is a very, very high bar to reach. Even if a jury convicts and sentences them to death the weasels that write writs drag the process out for far too long. Most citizens that would have wanted the death penalty because the alternative was Life, which included the possibility of parole, and most felt justice was not served…at least here in Texas. LWOP is considered by many now as the best sentence, even though there are still many that disagree…including me.

        • Sooner Ray says:

Didn’t Texas have an express lane for execution at one time?

          • EasTex says:

In cases where there are at least three witnesses.
The number of questions a jury has to answer in the affirmative is lengthy when seeking a death penalty. If one question is negative, the death penalty option is removed.
What concerns me the most is that LWOP was aggressively sought in a number of EU countries, as the death penalty is forbidden. A few years after LWOP was introduced as an option, the same anti-death penalty groups started advocating that LWOP was cruel and unusual punishment.
Mark my words, the same thing will happen here if the death penalty is prohibited.
            Genesis 9-6 is my guide.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Whoever sheds human blood……….eye for an eye………I have no problem with these teachings.

  • EasTex says:

With the Coach Reynolds tweet today, it sounds like he is getting his ducks in a row and ready to get to work.
I know there have been discussions about coaches rules concerning contact with players in the off season and that there was a new rule this past year concerning the issue. I really don’t know what the rules are and not really interested in pulling up some massive pdf off of the innernut, but perhaps someone here knows what the player contact rules are and how they would effect a new coach like Reynolds from meeting with his guys.
