– Chanse Sylvie: The 2016 safety out of Shreveport, LA picked up an offer from OU a little under two weeks ago, at which point he quickly planned a trip to Norman this past weekend for OU’s first Junior Day of this recruiting cycle. And while there, it became clear new Sooners defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks has made Sylvie a priority.

The two had a chance to meet in-person for the first time and Sylvie had nothing but good things to say about Cooks. Sylvie said they both want the same thing, which is “greatness.” He also had a chance to spend some time with Bob Stoops yesterday and spoke highly of that experience as well. Sylvie raved about how down to earth Stoops was even after having accomplished so much, “he is just a great guy.”

Needless to say, Sylvie is very high on OU right now.

– Tyrell Alexander: The 2016 Lancaster athlete left Norman yesterday without an offer, which was a bit surprising, but the OU coaches told him one could be coming soon. When I (Alex) spoke with him following the visit, Alexander was honest that he was a little upset about leaving without an offer. Apparently he was informed early on during the visit an offer wasn’t coming yesterday but after speaking with Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley, he had a solid grasp on where he stands with the OU coaches and told us he okay with things at this point.

Alexander went on to say he and Stoops had a good talk at one point during the visit. With Stoops sharing that he thought Alexander has tremendous ability, and that he thinks Alexander would really like playing in the type of offense Riley plans to run. And speaking of Riley, the new Sooners OC invited Alexander back to Norman for the Red/White game and is also planning to get down to Lancaster to watch Alexander during spring practices.

Alexander also had a chance to meet with WR coaches Cale Gundy and Dennis Simmons, who gave him a tour of OU’s facilities. In fact, Alexander said he was told the weight room is supposed to be done in about six months.

I (Alex) asked him if he had been offered whether he would have considered pulling the trigger. He said it definitely would have been something to think about doing because of how much he enjoyed all that OU had to offer on the visit. Should the Sooners offer in the near future, it sounds like they will definitely be a strong contender.

– Greg Eisworth: Another 2016 defensive back offer who visited Norman this weekend was South Grand Prairie safety, Greg Eisworth. I (Brandon) had a chance to catch up with him last night, and he seemed genuinely high on the Sooners.

During the visit, he spoke for some time with his would-be position coach Kerry Cooks and came away with high praise. Eisworth said Coach Cooks was very respectable and someone he thought he could build a great relationship with.

He also got a considerable amount of one-on-one with Bob Stoops and said of their time together, “he’s everything they make him out to be. A great guy that will instantly make you feel right at home.”

It sounds like OU definitely put their best foot forward in showing Eisworth he was a priority for them in this 2016 class.

– Eric Cuffee: The 2016 Waco cornerback was a bit of a surprise visitor to Norman this past weekend after having originally planning to be at OU’s Junior Day in March. However, after talking to the OU staff, primarily Coach Cooks, Cuffee and his family decided to make the trip up to Norman yesterday.

Cuffee told us he had a great time. As he put it, “I got to chop it up with Coach Stoops, he met with my family and it was all great.” He was not only impressed with Stoops, but Cooks and the OU staff as a whole. He said, “I talked with Coach Cooks about how good the program is and how he’s transitioning, but I have to say that the entire coaching staff and graduate assistants were all very chill and treat you like family.”

He has been high on OU for some time, so this visit could make a big impact on his recruitment going forward.

– Calvin Bundage: The 2016 Edmond Santa Fe safety is not much of a talker, but Brandon was able to catch up with him to get a couple thoughts on his visit this past weekend. Bundage said he got to speak with a number of the OU coaches and that even though it was his first time meeting Kerry Cooks, he came away impressed and described the new OU secondary coach as ‘real cool.’ Bundage also shared that he and Bob Stoops talk regularly, even going to far as to say Stoops is a “cool dude.” He seemed to enjoy his experience during the Junior Day and it sounds like he and Coach Cooks will continue to work on building their relationship.

– UPDATE (9:22 am): More Junior Day updates, this time from Alex.

Like we predicted yesterday, 2016 Arlington Lamar OT Chris Owens received an OU offer during his Jr. Day visit. Owens, who came up to Norman with his mom, was asked by OL coach Bill Bedenbaugh to show up early so the two could have a chance to speak before everything really got started. Due to the timing of when he arrived, however, plans were actually changed as other prospects were already filing in as well. Once the two had a chance to speak, Bedenbaugh told Owens the Sooners are looking at him for an offensive guard spot. Which does not appear to be an issue as Owens said that is where he would like to play at the next level regardless.

Both he and mom were able to spend some time with Bob Stoops as well. While in the HC’s office and looking at Stoops’ championship rings, the Sooners head man informed Owens that he now had an OU offer. Owens said once the offer was made that he gave a fist pump and said ‘yes!’ in celebration, while his mom was almost in tears from being so happy. He said the two went up on the visit with no expectations and came away extremely impressed.

– UPDATE (9:28 am): Again, another update from Alex.

A visitor who slipped through the cracks that we somehow missed confirming would be in attendance was 2016 Flower Mound Marcus DE, Andrew Fitzgerald. The 6’5” and 247 pound prospect came up with his mom and said they both really enjoyed the visit.

Fitzgerald said he has always liked OU and loved the facilities he saw during the tour the prospects were given. He told us he was with defensive grad assistant Corey Callens during his time in Norman, and said he really got a long with him. Fitzgerald did get some one-on-one time with Bob Stoops and was told OU likes him as a fit for the 4I position in their scheme, which just further assures the Sooners are sticking with the 3-4.

Similar to what we shared with you yesterday, Fitzgerald was also told that D-line coach interviews have been taking place over the last week and the expectation is someone should be in place relatively soon.

Despite leaving Norman without an offer, Fitzgerald says OU is still among his top schools.

– UPDATE (10:08 am): 2016 LB Jaleel Laguins (Watkinsville, GA) says the Sooners have offered.

– UPDATE (11:11 am): OU has reportedly made another 2016 LB offer, this time to Krys Barnes (Bakersfield, CA).

– UPDATE (5:03 pm): It would appear as though Mike Pelton has removed himself from consideration for OU’s D-line opening as he has told Georgia Tech’s Rivals site he will be staying with the Yellow Jackets.

Waited seemingly forever! It’s here, it’s finally here!

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Anybody talk with the new commit JMT?

  • Sooner Ray says:

Sounds like the new coaches are at least making good impressions.

  • Andy Sundborg says:

Sounds like a good start to this recruiting cycle!

  • AMKing00 says:

Something I kept hearing yesterday was how informative and put together the Jr. Day was. Those in attendance seemed to really enjoy that aspect about it.

    • hOUligan says:

Much better start to the cycle than having to cancel like a couple of years ago. The new recruiting support staff seems to be paying dividends.

  • BGO says:

Good stuff as always. Buddy of mine is very connected with recruiting people from Louisiana and was told by someone with a lot of knowledge that Sylvie is the best DB in the state for the 2016 class, but nobody knows yet. However, he said that everyone will know by the end of spring. Glad we are getting in on him early!

    • Stephen Dale says:

Sylvie will be LSU’s to lose if he has a big Sr season….Festered Piles rarely loses a top Louisiana HS talent to any school outside the SEC ( aTm, Alabama, Auburn) and the pressure will be enormous to stay in=state……

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

LSU is in a downturn cycle. SEC run has been over for two years now. Bama has given up 40 to Auburn, OU, A+M, Auburn, OSU. Only you and ESPN are stuck in 2012 mode about that conference.

        • Zack says:

I would agree with mr dale here. Even if lsu is in a downturn, it’s hard to take their top talent. Besides what would we call the current status of OU? Plateau?

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

It might help to check the Rivals final rankings. LSU although ranked higher, brought in a lower star ranking than OU, i.e. OU recruited better. LSU got the boost of having 4 5 star players, but were weaker in overall class.

          • Zack says:

I liked our class compared to others and stars often don’t matter when you talk about a class top to bottom but to me you have to get those handful of guys each year that are difference makers and 4 5 stars are more than a footnote.

        • soonerthunder says:

I am at least glad people are recognizing there is not such thing as “SEC strong,” “SEC fast,” etc. Put a good O in the SEC and they look as vulnerable on D as anyone else. Until the last 2 yrs, they haven’t had a good O in the SEC; way behind the rest of the country. They just have an automatic berth in the NC game due to playing in the east early time zone and being sponsored by ESPN. On a lucky streak, in one game IMO.

      • Malicong says:

The notion that all players want to stay in state just isn’t true. Reguardless of conference, they go elsewhere all the time. Some kids want to get out of town and see new things. The SEC loses top guys all the time. Florida St and Clemson have regualrly stolen guys away from SEC states not their own.

You guys are on top of it. Thanx for the updates. Always appreciated. I spend so much time navigating to TFB I just made you my home page.

  • Dwebb_96 says:

how many new offers went out yesterday?

  • Jordan Esco says:

update added – new 2016 WR offer

  • Bob Edwards says:

So if we get a ton of commits early, there won’t be anything to do on here during the summer except track our standings in the Fulmer Cup.

    • Zack says:

Well we’ve got 2 right now which is about our norm. So I would say by June 1st it’s likely we won’t have more than 5 yet. It will be an interesting summer I’m sure

      • Doobie74OU says:

Depending on how things shake out though 5 could be 25% – 30% of our class! I don’t think that will be the case but till some attrition happens it is still possible.

        • Zack says:

Yeah I agree. If attrition does happen which I expect it will to some degree, I think we take 17 next year. But right now looks like only 12 or 13 spots are open

          • Brien Brown says:

We did a numbers crunch on here the other day we figured 19-20 was how many they could take with this class.

          • Zack says:

I could see that but that would be a lot of guys transferring imo, the only underclassmen that I think could leave early for the draft are Sanchez and possibly ford if he managed to have a monster year.

          • Brien Brown says:

Realist side of me says 18 kids. I think that that at least 20 percent of that class needs to be LB’s so at least 4 in my eyes. We lose who, Shannon, Striker, and Lindley after this year who else do we lose? Mean if Dom or Evans go pro then I guess 4-5 guys. We need a QB also hell I’d sign 2 like the Buckeyes you can never have enough lol. I think the Terry kid will be a DE for us IMO

          • Zack says:

We lose bond too. I can’t see Evans or Dom leaving early they really aren’t big enough for college and I would say probably 25-30 pounds off of NFL weight.

          • Sooner 76 says:

And Devonte Bond is a senior. He should play a lot this year when we play 4 LBers. Neither Dom nor Evans will turn pro.

  • Sooner Ray says:

The Jaleel update says WR….appears to be a LB/RB. ?

  • RBear says:

Sorry but I was out of pocket last night, who was the BOOM!

  • Jeff says:

    Too many DB’s!

    • RBear says:

Why? We need 10 don’t we?

    • Zack says:

      3-0-8bruh

    • Sooner Ray says:

You need DB’s to run the 3-3-5.

      • Jeff says:

        Not 20 with no lbs!

        • Zack says:

But we do have a linebacker committed for 2016

        • Sooner Ray says:

Where are you getting this zero number? We have 17 LB’s on the roster with more coming I’m sure.

          • Zack says:

6 of those LBs must be walk ons though. I don’t worry about the depth at LB this year though. I’m more worried about 2016, because we lose 5 this year.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Yeah, I’m sure the staff knows exactly what they have and wouldn’t be shocked if they have their eyes on a couple JUCO players for next year.

          • Zack says:

They could go the juco route but imo I would offer the top talent and say they have a chance to come compete from day one at olb and then the top ILB, let them know those spots can be had but for sure will be open when Alexander and Evans are gone.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Do you think we will see any safeties roll down?

          • Zack says:

I think it’s possible if Thomas and Byrd get beat out this year. I think Parker will be the number one guy back there but outside of him I think it’s a huge question mark. I think Sanchez would actually make a good free safety but he’s a solid corner so I wouldn’t move him at all.

          • Sooner 76 says:

Parker looked better at strong safety than he did at free safety. Maybe a year of experience will help him.

          • Brien Brown says:

I think Johnson or Manbasor, will start at the other CB spot, that’s me assuming Sanchez is the other starter no questions asked. Parker will be a Safety which one IDK and I think Sunderland can earn some PT, I also think they should try Byrd out at CB think he is better suited for that. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the guys we signed this year get some playing time. Just IMO, nothing to back it up but, really think they where high on all these kids for a reason.

          • Zack says:

I think mbanasor will play as the 3rd or 4th corner early on but if he progresses as a freshman then he could earn some pt as the number 2 guy if Jordan Thomas doesn’t improve. I think will Johnson might be able to beat out Jordan Thomas.

          • Brien Brown says:

Well I think you are right but I’d think Johnson who is a JUCO guy and an AA guy at that level should be able to beat out a true Sophomore. Mean they brought him in cause he was supposed to be help right away. I am excited for this upcoming season.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I think Mike is planning on a 3-3-5 with a safety that spins down as a 4th LB when needed. This is based on his reason for recruiting so many DB “We are going to play a lot of five DB sets”, the number of LB’s we have (11 is the right number based on scholly limits if you are running three LB’s), and the Stoops brothers tendency to like hybrid/tweeners that they can shift based on the offensive set.

          • Sooner Ray says:

            I feel the same way.

          • Sooner 76 says:

I think Ahmad Thomas will be the safety that goes to SLBer in the nickel package. Still need someone to claim the free safety spot that was so troublesome last year.

          • Jordan Esco says:

This number isn’t entirely accurate, fwiw. You’re counting three guys who aren’t there (OU has added the 2015 signing class, but still yet to remove last year’s seniors). So that would make it 14, but that would also include at least a couple guys I believe are walk-ons and thus pretty unlikely to ever really contribute.

I believe Stoops put it at 11 during his NSD presser, and I think that’s a pretty accurate number.

          • Sooner Ray says:

I didn’t notice they had not removed the Sr’s, my bad there.

          • Sooner 76 says:

            2015 Scholarships

            WR = 12

            OT = 7

            OG = 5

            OC = 3

            TE = 5

            QB = 4

            FB = 1

            RB = 6

            Offense = 43

            DE = 8

            DT = 4

            LBer = 11

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

      Too many negative posts!

  • Boom says:

Enjoy the OPs and updates. Due to being a new recruiting cycle, it would be helpful to put the players height & weight when discussing the f/u call with these recruits would be helpful. Sometimes they are in there and most times they are not. NOT gripping but just a friendly request.

  • Ryan says:

It’s such a waste of time to recruit a top LB from Georgia. From the SE period . One in a million chance.

    • Zack says:

That’s my thinking too but you never know. I think it’s worth a shot

    • Bob Edwards says:

You are generally correct that recruiting any player in Ga is a low probability of success. But you have to evaluate them on a case by case basis. Maybe he is a legacy, maybe he has family in the area, maybe we offer a degree he is interested in, maybe he has some innate hatred of the SEC because of their over exposure.

      • Sooner 76 says:

Exactly. We’ve gotten players from Georgia before and Florida, and certainly done well in La. Go for it!

    • SamSooner says:

The Hulk? and DeBerry for that matter.

    • ColoradoSooner says:

But you’re saying we still have a chance…

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

If the coaches had your attitude, then they would surely field a team that wins very few games. You’d probably have an issue with that. Be thankful OU’s coaches don’t have your attitude. Live long and prosper.

update added – another 2016 LB offer

    • Jordan Esco says:

      my likey

      • Sooner Ray says:

So we’ve been walking the streets of Bakersfield. 🙂

      • Brien Brown says:

Are we still after Caleb Kelley I believe is the kids name. I heard a lot about him before signing day this year. People say he is a stud?

        • Jordan Esco says:

Yes. Easily OU’s No. 1 LB target in this 2016 class.

          • Brien Brown says:

So with Texas’s very nice haul at LB this year which I hate to admit but was a stellar class, do you think OU could get something similar this year? Like 3-4 LB’s and all of them have the chance to play from day 1? I am not sure about the kid from Victory but, I think we have some names that really scream stud this year at all positions.

          • hOUligan says:

            Caleb Kelly – CA
Rashaun Smith – IMG Academy, FL via Baltimore
            Dontavious Jackson – TX

IF OU could get 2 of those 3….stellar LB class this cycle.

          • Doobie74OU says:

Would love to put Jackson in the middle with the Hulk (McGinnis) for the next few years!!!!!!!

  • Sooner Ray says:

Barnes is pure STUD. Would he huge to steal him out of Cali.

  • hOUligan says:

Evidently OU is going to continue to use LBs. Seems they have offered more LBs than any other position so far. Guess Bob refigured his estimation that ‘2’ was the right number for ‘this year’. Looks like 3-4 for this cycle the way the offers are rolling out.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Well they appear to be running a 3-3-5. If so you need to maintain about eleven on the roster, given an 85 scholly limit. We are currently at eleven with four graduating. My guess is they will try to get to four and take a top target if one signs late. I would also think one might be a JUCO to try and even out the class distribution.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Confirmation from the kid himself, if you need it.

  • Fear The Magic says:

Im not sure if its been mentioned ( too many posts to scroll down ) but Jon-Michael Terry went from no starts to 3 stars on Rivals overnight. At this rate by the time NSD rolls around he should be like a twelve star.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Yet another pretty good indicator of how useless the star rating system is I would have to think.

      • Fear The Magic says:

True…they probably never even saw his HUDL till he committed to OU.

      • ColoradoSooner says:

        Indeed!

      • Stephen says:

True, but if an Oklahoma commitment can net you 3 stars in less than 24 hours, you’ve got think we’re doing something right.

        • Jordan Esco says:

I guess. But what value can you really put on those stars when he really only got them when he did b/c he is now an OU commit? If he had committed to Bama, he’d probably be at least a four star today simply based on that alone. They’re just frivolous, IMO.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Back in the day there was a site calling Tulsa sooner. They had a formula that combined measurabless and who the offers were from and generated a rating. Amazing how close it tracked the services who supposedly evaluate them.

          • Malicong says:

In a very odd note, TulsaSooner and TulsaSportsWeb (run by Kelly Riggs) merged in the late 1990’s early 2000’s and they had a weekly radio show for high school football in the Tulsa area. In 2001 they had a contest to give away a car if your name was drawn and you could make a 35 yrd field goal. I won that car. Happened at the Owasso/Jenks game in Owasso. I never played football growing up, but I played soccer for over 20 years. I could have made it from 55 I hit it so hard. The owners of the dealership were acting as the refs under the uprights and had a oh *bleep* look on their face when I kicked it.

          • Andy Sundborg says:

I remember you making that field goal. Lol

          • JB says:

Did rivals give you a 4**** rating after that? Oh, and congrats on the car!!

          • Scott Moore says:

I think I went to school with Kelly Riggs. Did he go to Claremore? Class of 78.

          • Malicong says:

Could have. I only know him through my dealings with TulsaSportsWeb. The age would be about right.

    • Stephen Dale says:

no kidding !!! Rivals had to do something to justify the OU coaches decision…..

      • ccmosaic says:

Just to throw into this conversation, I will mention that Rivals did have the kid rated at the 3 spot in Oklahoma.

    • JB says:

Are you sure that wasn’t a -3 rating with the commitment to OU? Traditionally, rivals bumps stars for Texas commitments while OU commitments lose stars over the year.

  • hushnpa says:

Something I don’t see mentioned in all the discussion of LB and secondary recruiting is ” crop estimate ” for lack of a better term . some years the number of quality , interested , recruits ( that you have a reasonable chance of getting ) at a given position may be low so you look at the next years ” crop ” before you hit the panic button . If you see a fantastic crop in the next year ( or two ) and you’ve got plenty of quality underclassmen in that spot then you wait and load up the next year , as we’ve seen OU do plenty of times in the recent past .
In this past recruiting cycle we saw OU load up on secondary talent esp. at safety .
And , now it appears they were indeed looking ahead to this year to load up on LB,s
where it is becoming quite apparent that they have good chances with quite a number of really top notch recruits ; recruits that very few , beside Deberry and Mcginnis , would measure up well against in any year !
And since as we’re finding out ( by having the good sense to keep track of recruiting at The best place to do it -TFB 🙂 that we do indeed have good chances with several really good prospects at LB it looks like good planing to me ! Kudos to B.S. and TFB !

    • Sooner 76 says:

Only 3 returning schollies at safety, so that was a priority this year. As a very rough rule of thumb, you try to recruit the number of players at a position to replace your number of juniors. Again, a very rough rule of thumb, but it does provide a guide.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

      How about kudos to Kish?

  • Sooner_Ace says:

RE Junior Days…I see all the talk about Cooks,BS,LR speaking with recruits…..No MS or Kish?

    • Sooner Ray says:

I saw a picture of Kish with a recruit…….unless that was a dream I had.

      • Zack says:

That would be a nightmare for most

        • Sooner Ray says:

I went back and looked, he was with Calvin Bundage yesterday.

          • Zack says:

I think it would be great for kish to lock him up early. I don’t think anyone is sold on where he will play in college but looks like LB is most likely right now, maybe he gets invited to some big camps

    • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah they got the only commit of the weekend. Slackers.

    • BoomerDave says:

You whiners need to get off Kish. He and Mike got the a commitment from the LB Terry yesterday. How many commitments did all the other coaches get yesterday combined? Yeah, that’s what I thought!

      • Sooner_Ace says:

Whining, huh? Obviously you don’ t really know anything about my history of posting and what not. It was not a bash on them at all, just did not recall seeing their bloody names mentioned is all. sheesh

        • BoomerDave says:

Not just today, it’s been an ongoing theme on here for months. Last week, we wanted 2 LB’s in the 2015 class and Kish delivered 2 of the best. Now he has a commitment from the first Jr Day, and people ate acting like he had nothing to do with it. That’s all.

          • Sooner_Ace says:

Fair point , he has gotten criticism, that however was not my intent.

          • Zack says:

2 both of your points. I think kish and mike will not be seen and heard as much on social media. Also I don’t think those covering OU football/recruiting are as interested in what mike and kish are doing. I think riley cooks simmons and to a lesser extent bedenbaugh and Cale will be the ones on Twitter.
But I didn’t take your initial post as a criticism of kish I’ve seen your posts and I would remember if you were one of the insane bashers

          • blaster1371 says:

I have a slightly different take. I think Mike steps up his recruiting. I speculate that Bob had a real heart to heart with his brother and compared him to the guys he brought in and are moving up the coaching ladder. Mike need to change his stripes and be more engaging. Someone posted here or on CCM that the big dig on Mike while at Arizona was he was so detached from recruiting and talking with parents, he let his assistants do all that. I Think Kish gets it and has been trying to be a better recruiter- just a hunch as he seemed more active this last recruiting cycle the the one before.

I know you were speaking more directly to social media and that may very well, most likely remain so. I’m 47 I have no real interest in that sort of thing even though the younger teachers I work with use it frequently in their instruction I still schedule after school sessions with students using a paper calendar and teach from an overhead projector using transparencies; but, not to brag, I have been successful doing it that way.

          • Zack says:

I would agree with that. A generational gap will make these differences seem more extreme but I do think mike has been recruiting guys very well. Bob thinks this was the best DB class since he’s been here and that has to be credit to mike.

      • Sooner_Ace says:

        Assume much?

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

The boss has spoken. Looks like we can’t talk about stuff he doesn’t like. Maybe you could post a list of approved topics that we could discuss?

    • blaster1371 says:

There was a Twitter pic yesterday on TFB showing Kish and a recruit. Both were all smiles.

    • Doobie74OU says:

The Terry kid that committed said Kish was the main one showing him around and that Kish was the one he called and committed too!

    • Sooner Ray says:

Make some room in that trophy case!

    • rphokc says:

don’t understand how they score it, looks like it’s incomplete………..6 singles matches and ou won 3 with one not finished……..3 doubles with no matches finished

      • thebigdroot says:

One point for Doubles win and then 3 wins in singles.

        • JB says:

It’s a shame that tennis has fallen off the map in this country. Growing up, I knew a lot of people who played tennis…including a family member. Remember when Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Jim Courier, etc.) dominated the sport? Now, hardly anybody plays tennis. Euros are dominating the sport professionally (Djokovic, Federer, Nadal). There is only 1 American ranked in the ATP Top 20, only 3 in the top 50. Almost all of OU’s best players are foreigners, with 3 of the 4 that are ranked being from Spain, Australia, and Romania.

I wish tennis would come back to popularity in America and more of our kids would start playing the sport.

          • thebigdroot says:

Need that captivating player that gets the public excited.

          • Stephen Dale says:

no kidding————this country needs another Chris Evert. May just have to adopt Genie Bouchard of Canada. She has youth, talent, beauty, and a nice personality…….

          • rphokc says:

watched the aussie open……….madison keyes might be the next us woman star in the making……..us men is a ghost town although a couple of us kids had some good matches……..the next men stars are nikosori (sp) from japan and an aussie teen, kryios (sp) though he needs to get past some head case issues……….I know you’e a habs fan, nhl……..looks like there will be some heavyweight playoff matchups if trends continue

          • Stephen Dale says:

yep, the Canadiens seem to have a good team this year…. it has been awhile…………..

          • Stephen Dale says:

the USTA has directed its funding to finding, teaching, training, and preparing inner-city children to become professionals ( Sloane Stephens, Taylor Thompson, the Williams sisters, etc ) and let suburban families pay for their own childrens training—which few middle class families can do…thereby trimming the lists of possible professionals for the lack of funding to send to the Nick Bolitari tennis school or a similar one………the problem with concentrating on inner city kids is they may choose other sports that pay far better ( basketball, football, baseball ) …the DESIRE to excel often rests with those from foreign countries who have no other options to escape the poverty of their homeland than to succeed in the sport of tennis…….same scenario as the Korean women who are dominating the women’s pro golf tour —great desire to escape having return to the poverty in Asia…………..

          • JB says:

You are right…and I think the middle class is where the support should be directed. Tennis isn’t popular in the inner cities. The middle class is what we need to bring America back to tennis in force.

          • MrBigsby says:

Both my kids picked it up in middle school as it was one of the only school sports available, but when the oldest got to HS, she had to choose between tennis and soccer because they were the same season. She’d been playing soccer since she was 5, so the choice was easy. Now my youngest has to make that decision next year and it’ll most likely be the same. She is loving tennis (hates the school uniforms though), but the coach is a real douchebag, so I expect her to go with soccer as well in HS.

      • Dustin says:

Best of 7. Once a team gets 4 points, the match is over.

      Big win over USC

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

Now a natty in softball and a couple of more in gymnastics would be nice.

    • Ed Cotter says:

Right on!! Congrats to the team and Coach Roddick on their NC. Boomer!!

  • pitbull17 says:

Barnes and Laguines both look really good. Laguines is very good in pursuit. He strings the play out beautifully and doesn’t seem to over pursue at all. He also runs downhill and delivers his hit with some power behind it. Barnes seems to be a little bit more violent in the way he hits and his fundamentals are really good as well. He wraps up shed’s blocks with relative ease. Wouldn’t mind having both of these kids in the program. It’s also nice to see them offering and trying to get in on these LB’s early, that position has to be a point of emphasis in this class.

    • blaster1371 says:

Yep! Starting early should should pay huge dividends down the road. OU gets to make an easy impression.

  • blaster1371 says:

Saw an article somewhere today talking about the 3-4 becoming the. norm in the NFL. Down in this thread Hushnpa wrote about recruiting cycles and “crops” of certain postions being better one year than another. Those were valid observations. Seemed like OU switched to the 3-4 using what they had but last two classes they are recruiting those who are physically and skill wise a good fit for the 3-4. I am hoping that Mike and his players gained some valuable experience this last season about this defense and as they see how other teams including the NFL use this defense they can gain better grasp of it. Just a random thought. Last season the defense just looked uncoordinated and clueless- kind of like a giraffe on roller skates.

    • Hotrod33 says:

I didn’t think the dl and lb’s were that bad. It was more the db’s most of the time that got beat or couldn’t tackle. I’m hoping Cooks comes in teaches them press coverage more. Last year we were very young and inexperienced on the backside and seemed at times wasn’t sure what to do.

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

Or, torn between what they thought they should do and what they were told to do (Julian Wilson’s outburst seemed to me to be this type of thing).

        • Hotrod33 says:

Either way something wasn’t right. I’m cautiously optimistic on this year. We should know after Tenn how much of the db’s have progressed.

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

The question you have to ask yourself is this:

  • Brien Brown says:

So way to early predictions of the starters on D this year but I will go ahead try my luck at it, please agree to disagree if you will or add a name or two. DL,Tapper, Walker, and Dimon, LB’s DeBerry, Alexander, Evans, and Striker, DB’s Johnson, Sanchez, Parker, and Sunderland Jr.

    • thebigdroot says:

Will DeBerry beat out Okibikawakoo (LOL I have no idea how to spell it)?

      • Brien Brown says:

I don’t know if he will beat him out but, DeBerry too me is a kid that can play Day 1 in some way and think he looks fundamentally sound. I can see Thomas as a Nickel but not a Safety to slow but just right for a hybrid LB. I didn’t say Shannon cause IDK where he stands with the team right now. But, Frank Shannon would be a welcome piece. DeBerry also could get into mix as a DE along Striker kind of a stand up guy. The Wood kid is getting a lot or praise being compared to Dan Cody is ok in my book.

      • blaster1371 says:

No he won’t. Obo has a relentless motor. I think that kid is going to make a name for himself this season.

    • Sonny says:

I think Frank Shannon will be back in the starting line up.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

I don’t see Sunderland. I think Byrd gets pushed and steps up his game. Ahmad to nickel. I don’t see any true freshman starting.

      • Bobby Hansen says:

I agree I think Byrd steps up his game quite a bit and I think having a new voice back there coaching will make a difference. Sometimes it’s amazing how much improvement you can see from one year to the next.

    • Zack says:

On the Dline I think tapper is the only lock but I will say NG will be wade and the other DE would be walker. At LB I say striker, Alexander, Shannon and Evans moves to olb. Then at DB Sanchez, j Thomas, Byrd and Parker.

      • James says:

This was the exact lineup I was looking at as well. The only problem I see is having both OLB weighing in at 220lb range…. That’s VERY small for olb in a 3-4.

        • Boom says:

Obo & Bond go 240 while Striker is 225 and DeBerry is 250.
If they move Evans to OLB, he’s already 227, so 230+ isn’t out of the equation. LBs won’t be small

        • Zack says:

Well and I forgot about bond. I would change him to the other OLB and Alexander to the bench with Evans back inside

      • JD says:

      • Brien Brown says:

Evans over Alexander? Idk about that.

        • Sooner 76 says:

I think Evans is a better player and that Shannon takes Evans’ spot, and then Evans slides to Dom’s spot. Dom was the LBer who was removed in the nickel and dime packages. He’s not a bad player, but he’s not nearly strong enough.

          • Steve Johns says:

Evans is not a MLB, IMO

          • JD says:

what is he then…in the 34 he’s better suited inside than out…prob a better SAM in the 43

          • Steve Johns says:

He’s out of position in the middle – unless he’s put on a lot of weight – not strong enough to take on the big guys. Remember he’s a converted safety

          • JD says:

He’s also required to cover the tight or rb over the middle right…I think he’s our best cover backer…just a true soph right now…lets see how much he add during the off season…wasn’t his dad a dt…I’m sure he can get where they want him…the question is where do they want him (weight wise)

          • Steve Johns says:

I believe he’ll be a jr. this year. It will be interesting to see if Shannon can come back from the layoff and regain his job. If so, Evans will be a backup next year.

          • JD says:

yeah he will be a junior next season…right now it is still in his second year of development…it will be interesting to see how the inside rotation plays out…I’m eager to see what Bolton can bring with a little more beef and knowledge..imo he had the closest hs film to Striker as far as blitzing and explosiveness at the snap…word was they moved him inside though…can’t wait to see some spring reports out and the game as well

          • Steve Johns says:

Bolton was at the end of last year 225 and could be 230+ by now. He’s a ferocious hitter and I believe he’s going to be an inside guy.

          • JD says:

If we can get two guys in the 240s for the inside that can still cover I think we will be good..most nflers in 34 range from 240-260 +-

          • Sooner 76 says:

We are talking about Jordan, yes.

          • Sooner 76 says:

I quite agree; he was projected as an OLBer. Probably in the WILBer spot than the SILBer spot he’s played the last two years. That’s why I see his moving to Dom’s spot with Shannon’s return. Dom was projected as a S, however. Neither of them has the beef for the inside.

          • Steve Johns says:

Didn’t remember Dom being a safety, knew Evans was. Dom & Jordan both could’ve bulked up, for all we know.

          • Sooner 76 says:

Dom was listed as a S by Scout and an athlete by Rivals. Yes, they may be heavier by this fall. Please see my response to Boom above.

          • Boom says:

Sooner 76, not trying to start anything with you as I like your stuff. However, both Dom & Evans were forced into action way to soon. They will be Jrs with more experience and size. Both will be at least 230 or a little more. Be fun to see how the LB situation shakes out in the spring/fall.

          • Sooner 76 says:

Thanks. No problem from my end; I completely agree with you and your responses are respectful. Hopefully, adding some more weight will improve their performance. I think people just disagree over which one remains as a starter with Shannon back. Excellent topic for discussion. I’m going on my feel for the situation, as are others; we’ll find out who is correct soon enough. 🙂

          • Boom says:

I will leave those decisions to the coaches since they watch them everyday. Based on a certain good or bad plays in a game, we make our judgments on those players but that is not the whole picture.

      • Steve Johns says:

I’d bet that Andrews will be in the TE mix and Bolton will be in the 2 deep at one of the LB spots.

        • Sooner 76 says:

Andrews is certainly a player who could excel in the new system. We’ve heard so little about Bolton, Tay Evans at LBer and about Tood at WR. Meade did not impress in his brief appearances and Todd wasn’t ready apparently. Spring practice will be fun to see how things evolve.

      • Ryan says:

I will take Mead and Todd over Neal and Young everyday of the week. I’m so excited about their potential.

        • Steve Johns says:

If Mead puts on some weight and gets stronger in the off season, I will agree. Both he and Todd are play makers.

      • nicjams says:

I still think TK9 is going to be the starter at the beginning of the year. His skill set still has too much potential to resist.

        • Steve Johns says:

Agree, I think it’s Knight’s job to lose.

        • Sooner 76 says:

I have confidence that Riley can correct Thomas’ mechanics. I have far less confidence that he can correct Trevor’s issues, which are between his ears, IMO. Horrible field vision, horrible decision making, poor confidence at times.

          • Boom says:

That’s what they said about Alex Smith and even Brett Farve. Sometimes the system doesn’t fit the player. Lot of clutter in Trevor’s head but who put it there. Simplicity will help and I feel Riley’s system will employ this method. Not saying he will start but I bet you see a bounce back like Boykin. He was horrible in one system until the new guys came in and took him from WR to a 12-1 record.

      • Jackson1006 says:

Ooh, that O line. OUch. Better throws quick screens (snore), move the pocket a lot and not get in third and longs. No Ripkowski to clean up the mess if the O line whiffs either.

    • Chris White says:

I like these. I don’t think Sunderland will get in this year however, I hope Byrd can start with Parker, I just like his harder hitting style. He can cover alright but has horrible hands lol

The D-line will be interesting, new coach and really only Tapper is proven.

      • wynwilliams64 says:

Yeah, I’m hoping Byrd comes along too. There was a reason that he wasn’t starting, but it seemed like he was always around the ball when he was in. He must have dropped at least 3 interceptions.

      • blaster1371 says:

Byrd has been a little slow getting over from the safety spot. If he starts picking up his keys sooner and is sure what his job is he could be another Quinton Carter.

    • kt-raida says:

i like yours i’ll just replace johnson with Mbanasor , and Sunderland with Byrd

    • Jackson1006 says:

Good insights Brien. There is quite a bit of coverage required out of a 3-4. I think DeBerry plays a decent amount but not a starter. I love all OK HS prospects but Sunderland is stiff. Go look at his HUDL then go look at Chanse Sylvie’s just for comparison. Footwork and instincts on another level for the latter imho though Sunderland has the measurables. My guess is we hear Ogbo a lot. Kid takes himself out of the play too much but man is he a missile.

      • Brien Brown says:

Well, I was only going with my gut and with some of my personal favorites. I know Sunderland is raw, but I like the fact that he really wants to be a Sooner and be there and a kid with desire and heart will always get my vote, I probably wouldn’t be a great coach lol. DeBerry you are probably right on with. I love a good offense but, I have always been intrigued with the Defense side of the game, seems more of a chess match on that side of the ball. I do think out of the 24 kids signed this year we will see around 10 play some. I think Westbrook is a given at this point by what I hear. I think all the JuCo guys see the field, and feel like we have some really good true freshman that will play. The only bold statement I have on the Offensive side is that I pick Cody Thomas to be the starter this coming season. Idk why other than I think he had the tools to be the man.

  • Bobby Hansen says:

On twitter someone just posted that it looks like Pelton is staying at Georgia Tech.

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

if true… then a hire is probably close… guys start pulling out as soon as they know they aren’t the choice…

      • Bobby Hansen says:

I agree they are told they aren’t the choice and they look good by saying they are staying and are committed to to their school. I’m not sure how reliable the info is it was from an unofficial Georgia Tech recruiting twitter page.

It is so early to talk recruiting with it being ALMOST 1 YEAR AWAY.

i don’t know that we win in the recruiting wars with another down year on the field.

Personally, I’m glad it won’t be Pelton. That hire did not excite me at all.

How about Dan McCarney as DL coach?
Seriously, UNT was a horrible move for him.

    • Steve Johns says:

He seems to be doing very good there. I doubt he’d be interested in taking a DL position.

  • Boomer4life says:

Tony Casillas is probably going to be the new D-line coach.

Whoops! I will — in the future — do my due diligence. My bad. So sorry TFB and Jordan.

Unfortunately, the format of this site does not lend itself well for such things. Some of these open posts run over 1000 comments, that can be hard to search through.

No worries, sometimes it’s much easier to re-post something than to read back through hundreds of posts.

The wacky world of recruiting services, Delance drops out of the Rivals 100.

The way I always look at recruiting services is that, if they were that good evaluating talent, the NFL or a school like OU would hire them and pay them a ton of money. How much do you think OU would pay a “quality control” coach if he could accurately predict how a player was going to perform at the next level? I bet it is a lot more than most of these guys make working for the recruiting services.

I understand, just find it odd when a kid was ranked #61 then drops off the board for no apparent reason.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Look at their ratings. The top 100 goes from 6.1 to 5.9. All that could mean is that he dropped from a 6.0 to a lower 5.9. Not much difference there. In the end what it shows is there is not much to distinguish one top player from another.

Here is the Rivals story line on “risers and sliders.” I just find it odd that they don’t even mention Delance, yet move him completely out of the 100.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Well I won’t try to defend them. Just pointing out that given the scale they use it is not surprising that someone moves a lot of slots. If 50-100 guys have the same score, a small change can slide them a long way. Just another reason these ratings are not that useful.

          • EasTex says:

I emphasize that I find it “odd” and not “concerning.”
Which is why I rely more on OU’s coaches to find and eval the recruits.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah and coaches can pick the right guy over the “best” guy.

    • John Garner says:

I wouldn’t pay it no mind. It’s Rivals.
