2016 JUCO CB Maurice Chandler Decommits

Shortly following a recent visit to Arizona State, there had been some whispers as to the commitment of 2016 junior college CB Maurice Chandler. However, most were quick to dismiss any questions as to where things stood between Chandler and the Sooners.

Welp, on Monday night those whispers became much more than just talk.

It’s a move that comes almost completely out of left field, even in spite of the said recent visit to Tempe. Nevertheless, it opens up a spot in this 2016 class in which the Sooners were already considering at least one additional take at DB.

Have a feeling he was forced out, Cooks is doing a damn good job on the trail and couldn’t see Chandler decomitting for any other reasons.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      Brandon should have more shortly.

    • Zack says:

I’m not sure forced out is the right word. If he’s a 2 for 2 juco then he needs to go somewhere that has an opening at corner next year. Right now we do not even though I think Sanchez will go if he gets back healthy and finishes strong.
Besides will Johnson who’s only contributed for 3 games now, what other juco DBs have we had a lot of success with?

      • Scott says:

Johnson is only a Sophomore , and their is some top talent DBs that cook is recruiting so I could see cooks pushing chandler away but also could see him weighing his options. What I think is interesting is D Jackson not including OU in his top 7 , I’ve been told he was too late and OU has 2 other LBs higher up on their board.

        • Zack says:

I’m not sure I believe that Jackson was told he was too late but they may have asked him to wait. You’re out in Cali right? And i know Juarez is picking up steam while Kelly is a lock so long as we don’t mishandle viney this offseason.

          • Scott says:

I’m from Texas but I know some people in cali who have connections with Juarez. Juarez is the top target while assuming Kelly is a silent commit. Lately Sooner nation has showed juarez alot of love and he’s noticing . I’m curious too see if OU is still pursues D Haynes

16…………..disagree to the extent several of the younger DB’s are showing improvement ( Green, Mbanasor, Austin, Thomas ) so a promise of starting ( Chandler’s mantra) was not a good idea and it is possible the toredor, Sanchez, will return ….. Should the Sooners get Buchanan, burton, or Eboh, the loss of Chandler won’t be felt …..

Good luck and no injuries,” NEXT MAN UP “. Who wants the” #OUDNA

  • Cole says:

I’m not surprised. A juco isn’t necessary this cycle. You have young talent sitting there and waiting. So my question is, Parker or Buchanan?

  • rphokc says:

“….and still support the movement” (clenched fist)…?

  • Sooner Ray says:

With the young talent we have and good recruiting going on right now, this isn’t a big blow. Wonder if he thinks Zach is going another year?

    • Zack says:

That and all the talent here already. I think Sanchez leaves though if he can get healthy and show some more good film.

      • cullison says:

I’m surprised you think Sanchez leaves. I’m as big a fan as he has, but I think his size is just prohibitive from a pro perspective. He might as well gain as much strength as possible before he steps into those waters. Remember, he spent a lot of last year getting ridiculed trying to tackle with a useless shoulder. He might even want to pick up a flashy kick coverage skill to supplement his CB play at the next level. When he was a Baylor commit, they saw him as a return man too – and said he was the kind of player who could “take over” a game.

        • Zack says:

The only reason I think he goes is because it’s obvious it’s his dream/goal to play in the NFL. He’s already 22 so if he were to stay another year he’d be close to 24 when he played his first NFL game, whereas a lot of guys may not even be 21 yet.
Also I’m not sure that he would benefit much from another year in college. I guess if he were to stay relatively healthy and end up with 20+ career ints that might be something that helps his stock.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

I think Zach could benefit from another year, especially after his injury is keeping him out.

      (Selfishly, I hope he stays.)

      • Sooner Ray says:

It’s not selfish IMO. I’ve always thought he needed to go the full term to get stronger. These last few games will make or break him as far as his NFL potential. He has the instinct, I just feel he could use the extra D1 work before he goes.

  • Dwebb_96 says:

Good luck to the young man. I am glad he made the decision now instead of waiting longer into the recruiting season. De-commitments are a part of the game. At least he made it classy with his de-commitment.
