Tyrell Jacobs Decommits

There was some sense this was coming, but Saturday afternoon news broke that Tyrell Jacobs had decommitted from Oklahoma.

The 2015 Rummel product had been committed to OU since July of this year after forming a strong bond with Sooners DL coach, Jerry Montgomery. However, with Kenneth Mann still in the fold, Oklahoma’s continued pursuit of guys like Neville Gallimore, Gabriel Campbell & Darrion Daniels, and with another recent offer Nebraska commit DaiShon Neal, it seems the writing may have been on the wall.

Regardless, best of luck to the young man wherever he may wind up.

So you think he just feels we just recruited over him?

  • Zack says:

Should be titled “Saturday the 20th”

  • Sooner Ray says:

As long as we’re recruiting up, nothing to get real upset about. It is still December.

  • Cedarsooner says:

My guess is OU thought this was happening and started recruiting harder for his position.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Until or unless we get one of those other guys to commit, this is not good news..

  • JB says:

Isn’t this like the 6th or 7th decommit of the season? WTF is going on? I wish that Jacobs would’ve stayed…we probably won’t even get any of those guys, or maybe just 1.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

This kid knows that he’ll ride the pine.

    • Zack says:

4th from my count. But lampkin and wariboko may end up back at OU. No one misses Jamile johnson except maybe kody.
I did like Jacobs though and if we cooled on him then I have to wonder what we’re doing with Mann. Their games are very similar.

      • Kody K. says:

Jamile who? I forgot about him on Friday when Haughton came aboard. I’m not sold on Sunderland yet but super curious to how he’ll develop. So relieved when Deberry finally committed. I was getting nervous with the LB’s and we still need another good one. Thank goodness for Monty! He’ll run a program someday. Good posts lately Zach, you always make good sense.

        • Zack says:

Yeah I think with Sunderland the coaches are going to have to work on his mental side of the game. He has the tools, they just need to bring out a killer mentality. Would like to see Reid added to this group. Or dalton.

    • Boom says:

Reading between the lines, it tells me a lot about Monty’s confidence. That said along with K, I trust things are going to work out better soon. JB, your a loyal fan of OU but have faith, don’t lose it. Faith based on K’s comments are much different than hope.

  • Swanny says:

2* or 3* kids are everywhere. We can easily land one just like him if need be. Have a feeling some kids who are upgrades athletically will soon be in the fold. This should excite SoonerNation, not upset.

  • Swanny says:

SIDE NOTE: Mack tweeted out his top two are LSU and TCU. That’s an interesting twist after his A&M decommit. Could’ve swore he would’ve ended up at Texas.

  • James D-Space says:

Adios! This is the reason to never get overly excited about early commits. These kids waffle more than IHOP.
    BOOMER!!

  • CrimsonGhost says:

Recruiting is always a win some and lose some game, but I was really hoping this one was a section of a new pipeline into Louisiana.

  • Super K says:

Fellas, we’re a little restricted as to what we can share here but let me just say this…this shouldn’t be viewed as anything that takes away from the recruiting momentum OU is establishing.

    • Glocal Sooner says:

      More BOOMS a comin’!!!

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

From reading the tea leaves, it seems OU may have moved on & let Tyrell pursue other offers.. Would that be accurate? Also, how long till we can expect someone too take his spot on the DL..?

    • Sooner Ray says:

Can you say whether or not we are getting in on a DL prospect other than the one’s already being talked about?

      • Super K says:

Let’s just say OU feels very confident that they’re going to get some studs including a surprise commitment late.

        • bmrsnr says:

          Lampkin?

          • Glocal Sooner says:

Bmrsnr, I think answering that would wade into the “a little restricted as to what we can share here” waters 😉 I’m not sure what to make of Lampkin’s story. I think he’s either UT or OU. Sounds like he and Nate Dalton are in together wherever they go.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

            Boom!?

        • rphokc says:

ok, another setup…….if the surprise commitment doesn’t come thru, will you say who it was……..lol

        • Stephen says:

I’m just going to throw out an ridiculous and unrealistic assumption that either the late commitment is a coach or KLS and Iman Marshall are coming to Norman.

        • Cary Newman says:

          K

Just tell me we’ll get Lodge late, and I’ll be a happy man!

        • Boom says:

          Murry

        • Zack says:

          Jaylon lane

          • rphokc says:

refresh me…….doesn’t this guy have legal issues that even the pukes didn’t overlook

          • Zack says:

He does have some issues but you never know how serious they are. He may have wanted out anyways. Look at Ronald jones. Their top 2 guys decommitted.

          • Super K says:

naw it’s not Lane. Lane is focusing on making sure he has everything off the field taken care of. I spoke to Lane’s father and he told me that is priority number one.

          • Zack says:

Do you think he will end up at blinn for a year or 2?

          • Won says:

            Santa K

          • Daryl says:

K I don’t know much about the other guys we are after other than they have quite a few stars. But what I loved about Jacobs was his nasty streak. He didn’t just want to make tackles he wanted to inflict pain. I felt like we could use that kind of attitude. Are their guys that you feel bring that kind of play in this class?

        • Steven says:

Surprise late commits are typically some of my favorite players so now I’m excited.

  • Indy_sooner says:

Best of luck to him, not going to detract from him and the “3 stars” thing… Kid had talent otherwise JM would not have offered.
That being said, a little bit odd of a decommitment.. do we have someone else coming into the fold?

  • albsooner says:

Who knows why he decommited…maybe he feels he can do better, or maybe he doesn’t like our D system, or maybe it is regarding the rumors of coaching changes.

Either way, wish nothing but good wishes to the young man!

  • Jeff says:

If they miss out on Gallimore, Campbell and Daniels then hope he comes back

  • Rene Goupillaud says:

Why slam the kid? Pretty clear that Coach Montgomery would never express a sentiment like “Adios.” The young man has his reasons and whatever they are, I wish him well. Hope he reaches his dreams.

  • Glocal Sooner says:

I’ll say from the start here, “I know nothing”…but just to throw out some DLine names we’re still hopeful for and maybe some that we could reach out and get with JM’s work:
Tim Settle Top 10 DT VA kid. Maybe DeBerry can recruit him.
    Neville Gallimore Top 10 DT
    Darrion Daniels Top 20 DT
    Du’Vonta Lampkin Top 25 DT
    Rasheem Green Top 5 DE
Terry Beckner Top 5 DE He’s from IL. Could Monty have some connections up there?
Cassius Peat Top 15 DE Committed to UCLA but now uncommitted.
    Joseph Wicker Top 20 DE
    Daishon Neal DE
    Gabriel Campbell Top 50 DE
We were in it for a while with the top DT Khalil McKenzie and DE/OLB Keisean Lucier South. Maybe we can/are get back in with them. Would love to get Daylon Mack but he’s apparently said it’s between TCU and LSU after decommitting from aTm. We already have Overton and Mann committed.
All speculation/wishing until TFBs give us some details 🙂

    • Zack says:

I don’t think we want settle. Early on it seemed we were the favorite then he visited a couple times and rumor is we backed off because of grades. KLS would be great but that’s a long shot even though I thought we had a good shot after his visit.
The first week of January we should find out how good this class will finish up. We should have an answer on gallimore, wariboko and possibly lampkin if he flips. Campbell is any day now.

I would want us to focus on getting linebackers. Getting Houston would be the biggest get of any class in awhile. No one pulls kids out of that high school besides USC/ucla. With the work we put in that HS each year, it has to pay off eventually.

      • Super Keith says:

Yeah, Settle is out of the picture. From everything I read/heard, there was a “parting of ways” early in his recruitment.

Gallimore/Campbell/Daniels/Lampkin are all real possibilities though,

  • Neworleanssooner says:

I saw Jacobs and his 4-star running mate on the Archbishop Rummel d line get owned in the Louisiana state Division 1 semifinals by a smaller, less athletic, but more disciplined team a few weeks ago. I’m not an expert, but I wasn’t all that impressed.

  • J J says:

    Well ok….then best wishes

  • JJSoona says:

    What JJ said below.

  • EasTex says:

Honestly, I didn’t remember much about this young man so I went back and looked at what was available.
I found it very interesting that he never made an official visit to OU and that from all the offers he had the only official he made was to Mizzou.
Not being critical of him at all and hope he finds a place where he is happy, but it doesn’t appear he was all in with OU from the outset.

    • Zack says:

At the time we got his commitment it was a good thing but if we have real shots at gallimore Daniels and lampkin/Neal flipping then I think we need the space so those recruits aren’t turned off.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

    Good luck to him.

  • Super Keith says:

Never want to land a kid that doesn’t really want to be a Sooner. That said, I hope Jacobs finds a goof fit wherever he ends up and has a great college career.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Late to the party but best of luck to this young man. Seen his predictions on another place were to Mizzou, they are a solid program. GL Tyrell!

  • Greg sparks says:

If that’s slaming a kid you’ve got some soft skin.

  • Scott Hamilton says:

Hey….if the kid has doubts…..we dont want him
