If you follow OU recruiting, you’re aware of several things: (1) That the Sooners don’t currently have a 2015 commit at the linebacker position. (2) OU very recently missed out on two of their top targets at the position. And (3) for whatever reason/s recruiting the position has been somewhat of a struggle in recent years.
Struggling at any one position is obviously never a good thing when it comes to recruiting, but the linebacker position has become doubly important for Oklahoma because (as you all know) they employ a 3-4 scheme now rather than the traditional 4-3 we became accustomed to during Bob Stoops’ first decade plus in Norman.
So with the added emphasis on the position and the fact that OU is very clearly struggling to land their first 2015 LB commit, I thought we’d put together a quick diagram of why some of us are a little worried. Take a look at the picture below which is a very simple illustration of sorts as to what a projection of the position would look like next year as things stand today. There are some obvious caveats as I suspect you’ve already noticed and I will explain below. But for now just look at that version of a depth chart and let it sink in. (*If the image is too small, just click on it to enlarge)
Okay, let’s just dive right in.
* Scary, right? And I don’t mean in terms of talent. There is plenty of talent represented there, but the lack of depth is incredibly alarming. Or at least it was for me. That is every linebacker currently on the roster reasonably certain to return in 2015. If they had one at the position, I would have also included any current commits.
* First, I assume the immediate take away is “Where the hell is Striker?” Well, I left him off for a specific reason. It’s just because he’ll be draft eligible following this season. And it’s not because some NFL Draft “experts” have, at times, listed him as a potential first round draft pick. And it’s definitely not because there has even been the slightest whisper about him wanting to leave early. If I were a betting man, even in spite of what I’ve already written, I expect (and, as a fan, sincerely hope) he will stay for his senior season. BUT when it comes to recruiting you have to hope for the best while planning for the worst.
Which, in my opinion, means if you’re an OU coach, you can’t just assume Striker will be back. You have to recruit as though he may not be. There are no guarantees when it comes to this type of decision. The minute you think a kid is coming back and you coast on the recruiting trail as a result, then say that kid changes his mind at the last minute and now you’re screwed because you thought you had it made with them on campus for another year.
That’s why I left Striker off. I think he’ll be back, hope like hell he’ll be back, but if you’re an OU coach you can’t just take for granted he will be. You have to plan/recruit as though he won’t and what you see above is that plan.
* We’ve seen basically one game from Devante Bond and while he looked pretty good against Texas, it was still just one game. If that had been the final game of the year, could you honestly say you felt confident about that spot going into 2015?
Admittedly, that’s a loaded question. It wasn’t the last game of the year as we have at least six more to see what Bond can do, assuming they continue to play him like we saw last Saturday. And we don’t know what he is or isn’t doing in practice, so the coaches certainly have a better feel for where things stand there as well. Maybe Bond proves to be the beast many thought he’d be after watching his JUCO highlights.
But even if that’s the case, and we don’t know it to be right now, he’ll be a senior next year. And the guy listed behind him, P.L. Lindley, will also be a senior. So if you’re projecting ahead to 2016, as the OU coaches always have to be doing, both those guys are gone. And there isn’t a third guy listed behind them because I didn’t have room to list one. There’s no one listed because there is no one else on the current roster or committed that could be listed.
* Similar situation on the other side. We’ve seen glimpses of what ‘Obo’ may be capable of and they have been very, very promising, but they’re still just glimpses. Then you have Curtis Bolton behind him, who is redshirting this year, and while his h.s. film was also very impressive we have no clue yet if he can play at this level.
Again, it’s not about a lack of talent. Both guys appear to have plenty, but it’s about the inexperience. Even if ‘Obo’ were to expand his role in the defense this year and look primed to have a breakout season in 2015, what if he were to get hurt. You’re going to be confident in a kid like Bolton who will have either never seen the field or, at best, will have a very limited number of snaps?
* And before I go any farther, some of you may be say (or may have already stopped reading) “Well, sure, but this is all ‘what if’ type stuff.” And you’re not wrong.
But ask yourself, if you’re a coach is it possible to recruit any other way than to approach things from a ‘what if’ perspective. Isn’t that the only way you can truly prepare and have your roster ready for whatever scenario may present itself in a given season?
I don’t know how the answer could be anything besides, yes. So that’s I chose to approach this little exercise.
Moving on.
* Inside is where it gets really scary for me. They literally have three ILBs right now that project to be on the roster in 2015. I’m sorry but that’s ridiculous.
Now, to be fair, part of that is because of the Frank Shannon situation, which is another name I chose not to include but could be there depending on how that whole thing shakes out. But, again, as a coach you can’t just presume, after all that’s happened and how that whole thing went down, Shannon will chose, or even be allowed, to come back next year.
But even in making that caveat, you’re not even two deep at the position without the possible scenario of having to go to a redshirt freshman in Tay Evans who, like Bolton, would have very little if any experience on the field.
—
I want to be clear, even though I’ve already mentioned it a couple different times, this has nothing to do with a lack of talent. They have talent. However, what they do not have is depth. And that’s where the concern lies because you have; Bond who has already dealt with an injury, J.Evans who has missed time with an injury, Okoronkwo who redshirted because of an injury, and Alexander who has played through multiple injuries.
We’re still several months away from signing day, but even if OU was able pull off something of a minor miracle and land any number of the remaining top targets on their board, they’re still going to be true freshman. And true freshman at a position very few kids come in physically or mentally prepared for at the level in which OU plays.
Obviously things could change significantly if Striker stays (IMO, likely) and/or if Shannon were to rejoin the school/program (who knows), but as I’ve said those are things as a coach you cannot count on happening.
Hope for the best, plan for the worst. And as it stands today, the planning stage is looking like it could use all the help it can get.

I’m pretty sure Bolton is an ILB for us.
Okay, we know to be concerned, but what is your take on why we’re having such a drought of commitments? It would seem that some young hot shot would see the room as an opportunity for early playing time. Or are the current crop of potential recruits afraid of Schmitty’s workouts or something?
JUCO is your friend. 🙂
Maybe…
Jordan do you think there is a lack of talent at the LB position?
Not trying to speak for Jordan, but in the fourth paragraph from the bottom, below the dash, he states that he is not saying anything about a lack of talent. Just trying to help.
Ed he says it like 15 times. I was obviously being a smart ass
Well put a damn smiley face or wink face or something. Sarcasm in the printed form is tough to figure out. I just thought you hadn’t read the article. 🙂
Fair enough lol
Was just trying to be positive which I apparently can’t do any better than being Debbie Downer
Jordan, you need to work harder at making EVERYONE happy. We live in a participation trophy world now. 🙂
Just remember what The Dude says Jordan… Strikes and gutters, ups and downs… Everyone has a bad taste right now but a good performance Saturday and a couple of good recruits get landed in the next two months and we’re all good. Yup we are about as deep as a 14 year old boy but quality is there and they will land some good kids, they always do.
Yeah… sounds like what I call the Ms. sometimes – Nancy Negative. ha Seriously tho, think you’re just pointing out things to be concerned about. Good and informative read, Buddy.
wah wah 🙁
Haha. I knew somebody could no resist
is there zero chance Frank Shannon returns..??
Not zero in my opinion ( Jordan may not agree with me ) it all depends on his NFL dreams. If he want’s a serious look I think he needs to put together another solid season.
so, you believe he will be allowed to return?? boy, the Oklahoma media will not be happy with that…
I don’t give a rat’s a$$ about the media, HAHA, I think if a punishment is handed down and served you deserve a fresh start. I know my view may not be popular with everyone, but it’s how I roll.
If the Florida media can get past Jameis the Oklahoma media should be able to get past Shannon!!!! If they cant, F**k ’em!!!!
Bolton is playing ILB….which really makes this article kind of funny seeing as work was actually put in to make that graphic, lol. But I do agree that linebacker recruiting is the most important position group right now. I mean the freakin defense is built for linebackers.
About all of five minutes, if that, but thank you for your concern about my time.
Londell Taylor? Is he still on the team….and only a Jr?
He’s still on the roster as a RSJr. but I’ve never heard him mentioned as being “rep” ready.
Good call. he’s not on scholarship, that’s why I missed him.
Not really into these dire straits articles.
What’s dire straits? This is reality. Just as it is they could land a couple guys and everyone’s worries would quickly be eased. I’ve never understood this, would ppl rather we just not talk about something until it can only be done so in a positive manner?
Facts are facts JE. There will always be those who bury their head in the sand.
I loved the article, Jordan. It challenges us to really focus on a position that is lacking in good depth right now. Typically, we’ve had multiple star power at the backer position at any given time. Jordan is correct to be a little nervous right now. Talking about it is just showing concern for the team that he loves.
Jordan……seems to me that Dom and Jordan E. both played as freshmen. Tay Evans and Bolton could also come in and be studs. The “What If” goes both ways there.
But I do agree that the lack of depth overall “could” be an issue for 2016, but I highly doubt that OU won’t have at least two or three LBs on campus next fall that can contribute or red-shirt in 2015 to be ready for 2016. It seems that LBs at OU have consistently been on the field as freshmen and/or sophomores. I’m not going to list because you know them better than I do.
Could get Wheeler, Jefferson and a JUCO guy and these “worries” would just go away……..until next football season. Ah football, she is a fickle bitch!
Not getting Jefferson…Wheeler will be a Sooner.
Hey, a guy can dream……..I dream of National Championship #8…..please….. 8)
Pretty much same argument was made by lots of folks last yr about online depth coming up but looks to be just fine. My motto….”ain’t nothin to worry about til there’s somethin to worry about”
Bolton at ILB or OLB changes nothing about this other than where he’d appear in the diagram. So I’m not sure why anyone would get hung up on that. And I know there are a lot of ppl who think he’s at ILB, and they could very well be right, but I’ve yet to see him play ILB and don’t think at his size he’s a good fit there. But obviously my opinion means nothing. Where is it that he’s definitively playing ILB?
Hey Jordan… Pretty sure Bolton is playing ILB…. 😀
People are referencing it because you said the ILB depth is “scary” to you. If he can play ILB then it makes life easier at LB. Moving guys up from safety spots or back from DE to OLB is much easier than ILB. We’ve yet to see him play anywhere really so no one really knows what he can do but it would be a welcome addition to ILB depth.
Two RS freshman as your only backups would still be pretty scary, but maybe that’s just me. That would worry me
Bolton isn’t a freshman though. That’s not really my point though.
You seem confused about why people are telling you Bolton has been playing inside. It changes the depth of the position which is what your article is about. It’s not an attack on your article, people are trying to add information and paint a more complete and accurate picture. There’s no reason to be so defensive when people are adding what they hear our have seen.
Yes Curtis Bolton is a freshman! Unless he played some college ball while going to high school.
My bad, I was thinking of Bond.
No , not confused.
Two true sophomores are the current starters and doing quite well..even if one of Tay or Bolton turns out then we will have better depth than we currently have…Is Onuoha coming back…he’s OLB and getting his grades in order much like Flemmings did a few years back…Did the Shannon bridge burn down or blow up…he can come back if he wants to next year also…and I highly doubt that we don’t end up with a few backers by february that we are pursuing…everybody calm down
Bolton played more rush end and OLB at Vista Murrieta his last two years, so not sure if ILB is where he will be. Have heard some scuttlebutt earlier this year about him playing ILB, but we really won’t know where he will be until the spring.
exactly. thank you, Ed
Jordan, good job of breaking this down. Love your thoughts on who we’re looking at by position.
Two RS freshman as your only backups would still be pretty scary, but maybe that’s just me
Maybe it ends up being a move for need or just a better fit, but I can see Ahmad Thomas as a LB before he graduates. To me, he probably would thrive as a tackling, hard hitting LB and not look so vulnerable playing deep rover. I also wonder if OU is expecting to kick the tires again on Vontre McQuinnie. He likely projects as a LB too. I do agree depth is looking slim though. We probably need 3-4 easily and maybe we target a JUCO too to get a more LB ready commitment.
I was just thinking about this earlier today. Really need to get Wheeler, or Houston.
Does anyone know anything about Keith Ford? Last I heard Matt Dimon was the only one coming off the injury report.
They just keep saying he’s not healing as fast as they hoped. He’s doing some running but not ready for contact this week.
Great write up. I think they will get good guys this year it takes just one to get the trend started. I think wheeler and McKee end up here for sure and it’s possible 2 of these 3 (jefferson, KLS, deberry) end up here.
A program as prestigious as OU that has this much of a depth issue and can’t get an elite LB to commit? I don’t see how a finger can pointed in any other direction than Kish.
I believe you could make the same statement about WR and Norvell.
Just so Jordan – just so!
I would be shocked if Shannon wore Crimson and Cream again.
I agree and that’s unfortunate for OU football
It sounds like Kish is going to pull a Patton and whiff on the super talented linebackers?
Jordan, you should do a similar piece on why it is important to have a good OC and Qb coach.
I don’t think Shannon will return even if he wants to do so. Too much ‘baggage’ between himself and the University..As fo recruiting, OU will eventually find some warm bodies to take the scholarships. They won’t be 5-star guys like deBerry, KLS, or jefferson, but 6-1,200 lb types who must RS to bulk up and learn the position. OU, contrary to popular belief, is not recruiting well anymore and the talent margin between the Sooners and other league teams is infintesimal. There is such a fine line between the teams , that when OU does not play without mistakes, the Sooners lose…IMHO, Stoops has seen his best days at OU and is simply riding the ‘gravy train’ till he can either retire or find another job that will rejuvenate him……The next NC OU enjoys will be under the direction of another coach.
Only the dumbest of coaches have “no clue” if one of theirs is not going to the league!!!! If they don’t have a clue that is one of the things WRONG with this staff!!!!
Cant go juco bc we already have two soph ILB starting and i cant see any juco’s wanting to be backups. Kish might need to be replaced if he cant bring anybody here
Football players want to play an attacking style on both sides of the ball, not the style played by OU. Football players also want to play for coaches who can mold them and help them get better. Neither M Stoops or Kish seem to be able to do either…..KST is playing with 20 walkons & 12 JUCO’s in its top 2-deep…Let that sink in !!!! And KST is a far more fundamentally sound team than OU…Either KST players are more intelligent or better listeners or KST coaches know how to teach their walkons to tackle in space, play pass defense, and adjust to different offensive schemes during a game. Still wonder why good LBers don;t come to Norman anymore ??
