Phil Steele’s 2015 Preseason All-Big 12 Team

It’s that time of the CFB offseason once again when Phil Steele releases his preseason All-Big 12 team, which always lead to some healthy discussion to help all of us CFB fans pass a little time. Despite lower expectations, at least on the part of some, heading into the 2015 season, Oklahoma was well represented throughout Steele’s projections. In fact, OU’s six players named to Steele’s All-Big 12 First Team were second only to Baylor, who placed seven players on the First Team.

Here are the Sooners that were selected, but you can see the full list of teams here.

First Team
RB Samaje Perine
WR Sterling Shepard
LB Eric Striker
LB Dom Alexander
CB Zack Sanchez
KR Alex Ross

Second Team
OL Nila Kasitati
DE Charles Tapper
LB Devante Bond
LB Jordan Evans
S Steven Parker
PR Sterling Shepard

Third Team
TE Mark Andrews

Fourth Team
RB Alex Ross
WR Dede Westbrook
OL Ty Darlington

Here are Steele’s preseason All-American team projections as well, fwiw: http://www.philsteele.com/All_Conference/2015/2015%20Preseason/All-American.html

If there was going to be a second OU RB on there I would’ve thought it would be Mixon.

  • Boom says:

I hope Dom can play at a 1st team level. To me, the one who will shoot up is Dede. I’m hoping Andrews does the same. Be nice to see all that talent work together.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

If Steven Parker plays at 2nd team All B12 level, my expectations for the defense are improved. And please no Sterling on PR

    • BR says:

Phil must not realize the Sooners gave up returning punts when Saunders left….but Im with you, keep him healthy

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

I expect to see Mixon and/or Dede Westbrook returning punts this year

        • BR says:

I like the way you think….There could be some amazing things happen back there with Mixon in space…holy crap

  • Sam Philbeck says:

Maybe I’m just biased, but am I missing something or maybe I haven’t watched much of Corey Coleman to where he’s being put ahead of Sterling on alot of lists.

  • Bob Edwards says:

So four LB’s for a team that probably starts no more than three and none of them are Frank Shannon whose probably better than at least three of them. How does that work?

    • Daddy R says:

I’m gonna guess this was done before Frank being back was official.. cuz there is no way. lol It does show me that Phil Steele thinks highly of Tim Kish.

  • Randy says:

4 LBs. Bond is our second best pass rusher regardless of position. Bond (hand down), Striker next to him standing, Evans on the other side. Shannon in the middle.

  • Tulsa Terry says:

Charles Walker not on any list? I hope he gets mad and turns into the hulk.

    • Daryl says:

I agree but so far when I have seen walker in games he seems like the guy with all the athleticism in the world but doesn’t come across as knowing how to use it all and seems far from dominating.

      • Tulsa Terry says:

I want to see more from Walker as well. I hope they allow the DL more freedom to make plays this season rather than just holding position for LB’s to make plays.

  • Fear The Magic says:

I was surprised when I didnt see Mayfield ast 1st team QB Knight as 2nd team and Thomas as 3rd team. Steele must be losing it.

  • Bob Edwards says:

So Sterling “Fair Catch” Shepard is the second team punt returner. Does that mean Phil thinks we will let him run with the ball once he catches it?

  • j l says:

Guess he dosent know shannon is back and will likely take alexanders job. 1st team for alexander? WHOOPS

ross 4th team rb, but no mixon, who is likely to get far more carries?

    Weird list.

  • GreginDestin says:

Opinions are like axx….s….everyone has one. Phil Steele has proven to be as wrong as much as he is right. I will believe it when I see it on the field. My confidence in any prognostication after last year has departed. It will remain that way.

  • Stephen Dale says:

Steele’s purpose is to sell magazines—-and putting OU athletes on the 1st teams is a good way to do it…….

    • Sam Philbeck says:

      Perine and Shepard deserve it

    • Fear The Magic says:

So I guess that you’re implying that some of those OU players shouldnt be on the first team?
      Why am I not surprised…

  • OceanDescender says:

Glad to see Phil likes our backers as much as I do. And my favorites might actually be Curtis and Tay; that’s a strong position for the defense!

  • Doobie74OU says:

7 offense, 7 defense, 2 special teams. I guess I was surprised to see as many defensive guys as offensive. In general we think of the offense being much father along but if 7 guys from this defense find there way onto the 1st or 2nd team All-Conf Team it should be a solid group! Positive praise for the defense. I like it!

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

7 of 11 def players on 1st or 2nd team. MS is back!

  • Super Keith says:

I find it a little odd that Steele included Malik Jackson on his 4th team list, yet doesn’t include Joe Mixon on any of them. While neither has taken a snap at the collegiate level, Mixon has more experience with collegiate level talent (even if it’s only through spring ball). Just odd to me.

    • Tulsa Terry says:

Malik Jefferson had a dominating spring game.

      • Bob Edwards says:

If a freshman with a big spring game makes you a fourth string all conference there must not be many good players at your position coming back.

    • dallassooner says:

Maybe cause that’s a position of need. RB isn’t exactly a position of need at OU. Malik is gonna be good. We just need to get ready for him. Maybe Mixon’s quick feet will freeze him in the Cotton Bowl.
