Team Notes: This time of year the team is running a lot 7-on-7 and, of course, working out. Here are a few things I’ve heard so far.

* We heard his praises sung all spring so no surprise here but was told Dede Westbrook is un-guardable in man coverage. We always hear about guys and sometimes they pan out and sometimes they don’t but I think it’s safe to say that we’ve heard so much about Westbrook that it’s hard to imagine him not having a real impact come fall.

* Was told that on Monday and Tuesday the offense beat the defense. But heard that on Wednesday the defense turned things around and absolutely dominated the offense.

* Was told that Sunderland is slotted in at free safety and McKinney and Haughton are at strong safety. Haven’t had a ton of notes on the young guys just yet. I was told not everyone has been able to participate just yet.

* Have been told that the young guys that have been participating on the defensive side are, as expected, getting acclimated to the speed of the game so at the moment “they look like freshman”. Hope to get a better indication of who might be showing flashes as the summer progresses.

* Was told that Dahu Green and AD Miller are doing a nice job early. Was told their speed for guys that big has been a surprise and that they’ve been able to actually come off the line and run by some guys. Though I will say that I don’t know who they’ve been running by. I was told Jordan Thomas hasn’t been participating due to a minor injury that he should be back from shortly.

* Was told the QB reps are being split evenly so it’s hard to say there is a true QB1.

* Also, on Wednesday I noted that I was told Marcus Green had not made it back to Norman yet. I was told yesterday he is indeed back on campus and taking classes.

* Keep your eye on Curtis Bolton, I continue to hear good things about him. I was told he continues to add good weight but also that he has great speed and is moving better and better in space.

* Generally, have heard that the linebacker group should be good and the depth should make for good competition. Putting aside the 7/9 techs and focusing on the Mike and Will LBs OU is going to have a number of options with Curtis Bolton, Frank Shannon, Jordan Evans, Tay Evans, and Dominique Alexander. – (Super K)

– Robert Barnes: Last night 2017 safety Robert Barnes (Southlake Carroll, TX) attended the Oklahoma satellite camp. Robert is the son of former Sooner, Reggie Barnes. I know from speaking to Reggie that the Oklahoma offer is one they definitely wanted and he seemed happy last night that they received it. Alex got to watch Robert move around yesterday and he said he looked really fluid and light on his feet especially considering his size. His feet and the ease with which he glides across the field are something you definitely notice on film. Alex indicated that Robert is over 6’2 now and Reggie actually told me that Robert was measured at nearly 6’3 just recently. So if OU can land Barnes they’ll be looking at a Jason Hall size safety. Hall is athletic but Barnes may end up being even more so. – (Super K, Alex)

Audie Omotosho: 2016 WR, Audie Omotosho (Plano East, TX) attended Oklahoma’s morning satellite camp yesterday. Audie has had interest from Oklahoma for a while and had indicated to me that he really wanted an offer from the Sooners. Yesterday he got one. He immediately told me that he is setting up a visit to Norman and hopes to get up there as soon as possible. I definitely get the sense that Omotosho is a guy that the Sooners can really be a big player for and he’d be a great get. He’s a wide receiver with great size at 6’2 or 6’3 that can really fly, has a nice burst off the line and attacks the ball. – (Alex)

AJ Parker: At yesterday’s camp, Alex captured a little video of some guys we had on our watch list. Among those was Bartlesville CB, AJ Parker. Parker is a long corner with great feet and ball skills. He’s also a very intelligent player (and smart in the classroom as well). I’ve talked to Clay Mack (Dallas area DB coach who sometimes visits Oklahoma to do sessions) and he also praises Parker.

Alex was very impressed with Parker’s performance. He apparently had two INTs. Below are a couple clips we tweeted out from Parker’s performance yesterday at the Dallas camp. Alex indicated that as the day went on and AJ started to stand out, he started to receive more and more attention from the coaches.

And here is another clip.

The other day I mentioned that there are a lot of athletes in Oklahoma that, with respect to athleticism, can compete with the Texas kids but the development isn’t always there. AJ is a great example of a kid who with a little bit of work from a guy like coach Clay Mack, he not only looks extremely comfortable in coverage, he actually appeared dominant. In the two clips above you’re actually getting to see Parker in both off and man coverage and he looks comfortable in both. The kids in the Dallas area are able to actually work with the many private trainers and high school coaches all throughout the week, every week, all year. I really believe as you see more trainers and private instruction in Oklahoma you are going to see how much easier it is for Oklahoma to actually grab a few more in-state kids that can compete at the highest level.

You look at a young man like Tre Brown out of Tulsa and he is a great example. With a little bit of skill development, he will be absolutely dominant. He will not be out-athleted by anyone in the country. But right now he’s playing purely on that athleticism and he is so athletic that he’s actually having some success. If he receives even a summer of skill instruction, the state of Oklahoma is going to have an in-state cornerback who is an absolute stud. Marcus Mays is another example of a 2017 guy who is playing on pure athleticism and instinct that if given some skill development can absolutely shine on a regional and perhaps national level. And there are more. – (Super K)

Maurice Chandler: Another cornerback from Oklahoma that we, and many others, think has a lot of talent is Lawton native Maurice Chandler (NEO). I caught up with someone close to Chandler last night and was told some very promising news for the Sooners. It seems Chandler has built an excellent relationship with coach Kerry Cooks. Apparently, coach Cooks has been recruiting Chandler very hard and the feeling that Chandler and the people around him get is that coach Cooks “is real”. I was told that Chandler will likely make a decision sometime later this summer and that Oklahoma is sitting in a really good spot.

I was also told that Oklahoma has indicated there is some real interest in another Oklahoma native and NEO product, linebacker Chris Baccus. Baccus is an outstanding athlete with great size. Don’t be surprised to see OU offer Baccus sometime later this summer. – (Super K)

UPDATE (Fri., 12:19 pm): Just spoke to a couple sources and have been told that OU is in a very good spot with JUCO OT Quinn Mittermeier. Mittermeier is being recruited by Oklahoma, Florida and Georgia but for a little while now it’s seemed to be a battle between OU and Florida. Mittermeier actually has family ties through his mother to Florida.

Quinn was a qualifier out of high school and actually played on the OL at Butler (a school that always has good OL and plays against great DL) as a true freshman. So he will have 4 years to play 3. This would be quite a grab for the Sooners. Again, I’m told the Sooners are in a very good spot right now but I’ll continue to check on things. – (Super K)

UPDATE (Fri., 8:40 pm): OUI gets a Boom! Harrah, OK offensive lineman Logan Roberson has tweeted it out that he has committed to Oklahoma.

JY tweeted out:

– UPDATE (Fri., 9:18 pm):

boom

– UPDATE (Sat., 11:34 am): I’ll just leave this here.

– UPDATE (Sat., 5:16 pm): Bill Bedenbaugh has added his second commit in the span of about 24 hours. JUCO offensive tackle, Quinn Mittermeier, committed to the Sooners and — as we told you about a couple weeks ago — also has the option of reclassifying to the 2015 class, thus making him immediately eligible for this coming season.

Without further delay, #BOOM No. 2 of the weekend.

boom

– UPDATE (Sun., 5:11 pm): Sooners miss out on longtime 2016 OT target Kellen Diesch.

I’m ignorant to the techniques you reference so often. If it isn’t to much, could we see something explaining them? The DLine and LB is the ones I’m the most curious about.

    • Randy says:

      This might help some.

      • SoonerGoneEast says:

Our QB circle is never that close to the C circle.

      • Malicong says:

Thank you. That is very helpful to those of us that didn’t play organized football.

      • Exiled In Ohio says:

Excellent! Hey Jordan / K, could we get this picture moved to TOP or something similar so it will be easier to reference in the future?

        • Randy says:

I am sure they could get a better one would be cool to see one vs 3/4 WR sets. I made one for OU messing around I will try to get it on here.

        • Mysterio1 says:

I like that idea! This is very helpful.

      • John Garner says:

Thanx Randy. If you don’t object, I’d like to add some clarification. If I’m not mistaken, the “odd” numbered techniques are the “shade” alignments, meaning on an OL’s shoulder or eye, but not in the gaps. 2i and 4i are also shade alignments but inside the “2” and “4”. There’s not enough odd numbers under 10 to cover those two alignments. All of the “even” numbered techniques are head-up, which accounts for the transposition of numbers at the TE position. All too often, Bear Bryant is credited with creating the numbering system, but even he gives credit to Bum Phillips.

        • John Garner says:

          Shade versus gap alignment

        • John Garner says:

          DL techniques:

        • Randy says:

You know more than I, just found that quickly on the net. Lol. And how you line up depends on the offense I would think. I read where Bud Wilkinson came up with the 3-4 not sure if that is correct or not but kinda cool if true.

          • John Garner says:

Thanx Randy. You’re right about Bud. But I think in his case it was referred to as a 5-2 and became a 3-4 in the pros when the DEs became OLBs. Could be wrong. There’s so much stuff on the net that it’s hard to determine what’s spot on, so I bought Bud’s (and Gomer Jones) book, “Modern Defensive Football”. It’s amazing the things that Bud contributed to football for which he doesn’t receive credit.

      • thebigdroot says:

        It does. Thanks

  • Cole says:

Normally if you hear that one side is doing better than the other and it switches constantly, that the whole team is good as a whole. I hope I’m right. I wish we could get an insider look at a practice just so I can see ” Baker Mayfield to Dede Westbrook for a touchdown!”

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yeah! Sounds good…But for all we know it could’ve been Thomas or Knight to Dede as well, although imho less likely.

      • Cole says:

I’m secretly rooting for mayfield because Trevor disappointed but if all season we have the Alabama Trevor knight then I’ll fine with that too.

        • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I will settle for Trevor vs K-State 2013.

          • Cole says:

He just seemed calm in that game. The players around him helped though. Even though he made all the big plays, the guys around him made plays as well. He didn’t have that last year other than Shep.

          • Rene Goupillaud says:

The only problem with your assessment is that TK’s only had 2 descent games, both 2 seasons ago. That year he had great receivers in all the games he underperformed that year. Bell had to come in against oSu to win that game.

My sense with Cody is that Heuple was the problem last year. Josh was all about process, he didn’t let the players just play. Here’s the description. OU rushes for 3 yards, the Qb looks to the sideline for the next play. The team lines up. The Qb turns to look at the sidelines again. Meanwhile Josh is in the box high above looking at the defense and calling a different play. Finally it gets to the field and to the Qb who then trots up and down the line communicating the new play. At no time does the Qb has time to look over the defense or think about what’s working. Instead, he’s concerned with the process of getting a new play and communicating it to everyone. All the attention is on the process. Josh was a process and control freak. He couldn’t just let the boys play.

Riley won’t do it that way. The Qb will have more freedom to concentrate on playing the game instead of getting the play off on time.

          • HoustonChiver says:

anything but 1st half Trevor vs K-State 2014.

    • Super K says:

      That’s a good point Cole.

      • Cole says:

From when I played sports and now, if things constantly alternate it’s a good thing. Hopefully this plays out in the season. I wouldn’t mind earning up to bet with mom that if OU wins the natty I’ll get a tattoo. Lpl

    • LifeLongSoonerFan says:

We need the offense to challenge the defense and the defense to challenge the offense. That’s what will make us better. Glad to hear each side has dominated at times.

    • Jeff says:

Hope Bake is the man, not thrilled about TKP6

    • Zack says:

I would go for the defense domination the offense 2 out of 3 times. I think the offense will be just fine this year so I want a little more faith in the defense. Although I have a good feeling about this defense if they are healthy.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

“(insert OU quarterback) to Dede Westbrook for a touchdown!”

    Happy Friday! Boomer!

    • Ed Cotter says:

TGIF JY. Hope the family is doing well. BOOMER!!

      • JY says:

Doin well Ed, and likewise! The boy’s about a year old now on July 1st, and is walkin.

        • Exiled In Ohio says:

But is he running into other kids and slamming them to the ground? And then falling on them to ensure they stay down? It’s never too young to work on that killer instinct!

          • JY says:

he’s gettin the kitty cat right now. He’s gettin out-athleted a little bit but i like his determination 😉

    • EasTex says:

      S00NER!
Happy Friday to you too, big guy. We miss seeing your mug around here.

      • Boom says:

C’mon Eas Tex. He’s been in the film cave looking at all OL for this upcoming year. Then he’s going to put it in a post. I’m sure it will feature 6 – 8 OT’s and 10 – 12 guards. Most likely be out next week, right JY?

        • EasTex says:

That would be tremendous. Still, a little howdy-do every now and then would be welcome. 😀
Now that the little man is mobile his world has changed even more.

        • JY says:

Yeah, maybe that would be a good subject to have on our podcast when we get it goin.

      • JY says:

yeah I’m still doing stuff behind the scenes. Hopefully we’ll be able to get a podcast going soon and you’ll hear more from me and the other guys.

  • Jason Vos says:

wouldn’t surprise me if Cody Thomas is the starter come game 1

    • Fear The Magic says:

Wouldnt surprise me either. I think the QB spot is wide open. Im still kind of bummed that Hanson left. I think he didnt really give it a good shot and could have been our starter sooner rather than later.

    • Mysterio1 says:

I like Cody, that would mean a huge jump in his mechanics. Hopefully Riley can get him straightened out. Playing baseball did nothing for his football throwing motion.
Cody Thomas could be the reason Hansen chose to transfer?

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

He has a bit athleticism that the others may not have.

  • KellyT. says:

i moght be having a lapse bought i thought green didnt sogn with OU? i checked the 2015 commits and there he is.

    • Jordan Esco says:

You might be thinking of Vontre McQuinnie, another DB from that same class that didn’t qualify.

  • Fear The Magic says:

Maurice Chandler 4.39 40 according to hudl. He has nice height for a CB too

  • Sooner 4Ever says:

Just watched the “Record Breaker” video of Ryan Broyles and it occurred to me… in the last few years, we’ve had a receiver set the career receptions mark, a quarterback reach third on the career passing yards chart, and a running back set the single game rushing record. Not bad… not bad at all.

And, that career receptions record that Broyles set has already been broken, just this past year, by Justin Hardy… from ECU where Lincoln Riley was OC for every one of his 387 career receptions.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Just proves the point that pretty much everyone knows OU is WR U QB U and RB U….not to mention OL U

    • Stephen Dale says:

Individual records mean little if the team doesn’t do well……would trade every individual record for another NC………

  • Randy says:

What’s the word on Isaiah Simmons out of KS, is he camping anywhere ?

  • Boom says:

Bout time for Baccus. I can hear it now, Baccus on the tackle, for a commentator that doesn’t get any better and roles right off your tongue.

Could you let me know how many years he would have at OU. Is it 2 for 2 or 2 for 3.

  • soonermusic says:

“Generally, have heard that the linebacker group should be good and the depth should make for good competition”…Oh, the irony… sorry, couldn’t resist. 🙂
Great report from all y’all. Really appreciate the updates and terrific info.

  • SoonerGoneEast says:

Great OP, great information, thank you!

  • soonermusic says:

Excited to hear about impressive performances from new wr’s–I think that will make all the difference, if it pans out that way.

  • RocketCitySooner says:

Question. What does it mean when you guys say a player is “long” or has “great length”? Is the same as being “tall” or is a combination of being “tall” and having “long” arms? Or, something else? Thanks in advance.

    • Boom says:

tall and all of the above.

    • Fear The Magic says:

I was going to reply but then backspaced something fierce lol.

    • Randy says:

I think of it has in the longer the player is he can keep offensive players away from him and he has a wider reach for tackles and pass deflections. Jordan Evans is a “long” ILB.

    • Super K says:

When you hear “a long 6’0” it’s going to refer to arm length but also just an overall proportion. Some guys look taller due to the way they are built.

  • EasTex says:

    Excellent OP.
Time management for the coaches must be agonizing, with all the ‘cruitin’ and camps going on.
Can’t hardly wait for the Oklahoma Drill in two months. I want to see Gallimore vs. Paul with Perine at RB. I want to see some slobber.

  • Mysterio1 says:

Ive been stoked about Curtis Bolton since the day he committed. California size and speed.

    • Randy says:

I am jus pleasantly surprised he is a inside guy thought for sure he was a outside LB. make me think what Arthur McGinnis could do inside.

      • Zack says:

Some think both mcginnis and deberry will end up inside. I like both at outside but I’m not known for my coaching.

        • Randy says:

Would be special if they could seems like a harder position to find. Plus me personally I like the longer OLB’s. Like Lorenzo Carter at Georgia.

          • Boom says:

I used to get caught up on size but now I get caught up on play making ability.

          • #1¢WW2 says:

I wish my wife felt the same

          • Randy says:

I think the size is important defending big 12 offenses (hell, Auburn, Ohio State, Oregon offenses).. The length on the outside need to get better. Guys like Striker are special but need to get the length on the outside. Think Grissom just more athletic.

          • Boom says:

Yea, who wouldn’t want more Grissom’s that are more athletic. How many are out there?? 3rd round to NE, can’t be to bad athletically. Guess Lofton couldn’t make it today due to his height. Guy is a play maker on all levels and don’t give me that big 12 passing stuff as he plays in a league that the MLB has to cover a wide space. Apparently he does OK being an all pro.

          • Randy says:

Seems like more and more everyday. ? Lofton is a perfect ILB was then, is now and would be if he were at OU today. I am talking about OLB or stand up DE whatever you want to call it. And it’s just my idea of how I would like our defense to look nothing else.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

            Boom.

      • Mysterio1 says:

We need a kid that has closing speed with the will to knock you out of a football game! And Bolton is that guy!

    • KJ1123 says:

Hes a big kid. Closer to 6’3″ if I had to guess.

  • j l says:

Crazy to think ive got a kid in my hometown(parker), with clips up here on TFB. Guess i might have to try and make a game this year, even though we SUCK at football.

  • KJ1123 says:

I believe everyone was cleared yesterday to participate. Physicals were holding some kids up.

  • Randy says:

Not sure how this will look.

    • HoustonChiver says:

I think Durron Neal still gets the nod over Jeff Mead. Mead still has to prove himself in games, would not be surprised if he ended up with the starting job though

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

Neal has had 3 years to prove himself and he never has. I’m going out on a limb and starting Mead.

        • HoustonChiver says:

I though Neal did a good job stepping up when Shep went down. Is he a #1 option? no, but we need these guys who know the schemes, defenses, and have experience

          • EasTex says:

            I like Neal.

          • SquidGiant says:

I think with Neal and Andrews on one side the run blocking could be pretty brutal. Neal had some drops, but it would be hard for anyone to be consistent in the offense Heupel used last year. I also would love to see Ross at receiver for screens and reverses. He is a threat to go the distance every time he touches the ball.

          • j l says:

16 catches in 6 games with shep out, for not even 200 yards.

He actually did better with shep in game, didnt step up in the slightest when sterling went down. Quick is the only one who did.

          • Boom says:

playing out of position. built like a RB so needs more inside slants/screens/hitches.

          • j l says:

only 26 catches in the 1st 7 games even when he was playing his primary position.

Neal has been a huge disappointment considering the hype he came in with.

          • Boom says:

Outside is not his normal position. Playing out of position or in a poor scheme will hurt anyone.

          • HoustonChiver says:

Yeah well that makes sense, it means the #1 corner on each team wasn’t on him when Shep was in the game. Also didn’t help any receiver that our QBs couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn last season.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Since we have a totally new set of coaches I am willing to drop any preconceived notions about the players until I see how they perform under the new system. I suspect that some of the players that “aren’t any good” will do better under this new group of coaches. And some may not do as well.

      • Fear The Magic says:

I could be wrong but I believe Neal is slated to play inside and Meade outside WR

  • Gladdman says:

Would like to let everyone know about the OU Club of Tulsa Golf Tourney 7/10 at Battle Creek in Broken arrow. Proceeds go to scholarships to either the Norman or Schusterman campus. If interested in playing or being a sponsor, contact me at [email protected]

  • Stephen says:

Great OP, especially if it has a little bit it of news on the freshman, specifically Dahu (who I’m holding predicting won’t redshirt). Anyone notice that since the firing of Norvell, the size of the WR being recruiting has gone up?

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Is Quinn an immediate qualifier(this fall?) or are we talking January..?

  • JD says:

Thank you Super K……I’ve been pretty optimistic about the backer bunch when everybody was doom and gloom…they’re just young and need time to mature physically and mentally..I think we’ll be much improved this year and more so the next season with the group

  • Boom says:

Say we pick up Chandler & Baccus. Would they be available this year or next. Also, if we get Chandler and he’s as good as advertised, which CB does he play? Baccus, would he be ILB or OLB. So many questions.

    • Dustin says:

Wouldn’t be here until 2016. Not sure if they’d be December grads or not. If so, they’d be here for spring ball next year. Baccus is ILB to me. Chandler’s position/PT would depend on Sanchez’s NFL decision, I would think. JMO

      • Boom says:

cool thanks. That means Shannon leaves, Alexander/Evans will be Sr’s, Baccus being a jr with Bolton/Tay Evans. Like it.

    • Sooner 76 says:

I think Mittermeier is available for the fall b/c he was a qualifier from HS.

That is a great report Super K and Alex! Keep the info coming, and I’ll keep paying. 😉

    • Super K says:

I know Mo Chandler will be available in December. Not sure about Chris but I assume if all goes well with his summer work he will be too.

  • kokevo says:

Does anyone know the status on Dalton wood? Is he back on campus or no?

    • Bob Edwards says:

No reports of him being back on campus. Probably too late for him to start summer session. I don’t think anyone really knows what is going on. It is probably too late for him to be in the summer semester. If he comes, it will probably be at the start of fall practice.

      • kokevo says:

Just wondering on 247 a few guys on there said he made it back Tuesday but I thought it was odd that I hadn’t heard about it anywhere else.

    • Super K says:

Last I checked was yesterday and heard he wasn’t there.

  • j l says:

B/R lists georgia southerns RB group amongst its top 25 position group, but not the sooners.

What person in their right mind would take georgia southerns Rb group over perine, mixon, ross and anderson?

Idiot writers really get my blood boiling.

    • Bob Edwards says:

      Don’t read B/R

      • j l says:

They have some decent writers, but the bias of some of them is astounding.

        • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Really? It seems like there’s a lot of other websites that do the same thing, some less successfully than others. But B/R has always seemed like the worst of the lot.

          • j l says:

I watch wrestling, if you know of any sites that also keep up with that, let me know, id love to take a look.

What kind of wrestling? SB Nation covers that too, and does a better job than B/R with most coverage, just to name one site.

          • j l says:

            pro wrestling lol.

          • ComancheJoe says:

For anybody reading this exchange that thought you were talking about amateur wrestling, Flow Wrestling is the place to go. A lot of pay stuff, but excellent Twitter feed.

          • BleedCrimson says:

I suppose I live in a bubble, I didn’t know professional wrestling existed. Good to know that those who want to continue after collegiate or olympic careers, have the ability to continue.

          • j l says:

You’ve never heard of wwe, hulk hogan, the rock?

          • BleedCrimson says:

Yes, I get that the name calls it wrestling, but never thought of wwe as anything but a rehearsed show, with predetermined winners. I mean, do not get me wrong, those guys are all very talented, but for me is like watching a movie after someone has told you the ending.

          • j l says:

Understand completely, certainly not for everyone.

That’s what swerves(an unexpected finish) are for though 🙂 keeps things unpredictable

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

SI had a roundtable in which they talked about Derrick Henry, Nick Chubb, Leonard Flournette, and Ezekiel Elliott as the top returning RBs, and overall ranked Arkansas’ stable as one of the tops. Not a mention of Perine or the Sooners.

      • j l says:

all of those teams have great RB stables. Ours is right up there with any of them.

        Sigh

    • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Everyone. And I do mean EVERYONE That is not a true blue die hard sooner fan hates OU. That’s how it has been since 1957.

      • j l says:

Most will still give us respect though. Dont have to like us to recognize the talent we put out.

        • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Just my personal opinion. But that just makes them hate us even more. But I have found in life the more haters you have the better off you must be in life. “HATERS ARE GOING TO HATE”

    • Doobie74OU says:

You have to take that with a bit of a grain of salt B/R also says Perine is the 2nd best returning RB in the nation. Ross hasn’t shown a great deal as a RB since he has been here, Ford transferred, and Mixon and Anderson have never had a college carry. So by comparison GSU returns a backfield that totaled 3272 yds and 4 Tds and OU guys that were mentioned totaled 2308 yds and 25 Tds. I still think most would agree our backfield is more talented while their backfield as a group may be more proven up to this point.
p.s. I am not agreeing that GSU has a better backfield just understanding their reasoning.

      • j l says:

GSU also plays in the sunbelt, and didnt play a single team worth a damn all season.
Their backs arent proven against decent competition.

Ross btw averaged like 6.7 YPC, thats pretty healthy.

        • Dustin says:

          246 yds vs. NC State
          283 yds vs. Georgia Tech
          375 yds vs. Navy

          • j l says:

Georgia tech gave up 271 yards rushing to wofford. WOFFORD!!!!!!

283 vs tech isnt impressive. they gave up 200 ypg on the ground last year.

Navy allowed about 230 ypg rushing, big whoop.

nc state gave up 479 to ga tech, and over 300 to BC..249 is nothing special.

Ill give you that ga tech is a good team, but when you are trying to make a case with navy and nc state, i think youve proven my point for me.

Can you tell me with a straight face you’d rather have GSU’s RB’s than ours?

          • Dustin says:

Of course not. I’m just saying they’re not too bad. They beat Florida in 2013 and went undefeated in conference in 2014. Not saying they’re better than OU. Not even close. I think B/R was just throwing them a bone cuz they’re pretty new to FBS. Don’t get upset by something you read on B/R. Oh, and don’t be surprised if GSU leaves Morgantown with an impressive victory this season.

          • j l says:

I get throwing them a bone, but it always seems to be at our expense.

Frustrated that we never seem to get our due. I hope the kids this year force everyone to take notice.

          • Dustin says:

Meh. Look at it this way: They’re dumb.

          • j l says:

            Unfortunately, they still have influence.

You dont have to be right, you just have to convince people you are.

    • Stephen says:

B/R has it’s own agenda. They say stuff like the Sooners most anticipated recruiting target is some 3* guy when everyone knows it’s Caleb Kelly. They don’t list Memorial Stadium as a top place to play…that kind of stuff. Everything the post is usually a biased opinion that turns the hype away from one team or one conference, and pushes it to another (SEC). Occasionally they’ll have decent post for OU and CFB but it’s pretty obvious who they align themselves with. I stick with TFB, SonOfACoach, some 247 specific writers and such who can backup they’re articles and have decent knowledge of the atmosphere.

      • j l says:

Funny you mention that article, as i made that exact same comment on it(same poster name i use here).
Everyone knows kelly is our top target, i never hear fowlers name on here as someone we are expecting to have a shot at.

i see memorial stadium in the top 5 or 10 on some lists, or completely left off, as you said. Massive variance.

Never heard of sonofacoach before, ill have to check that site out.

    • pag says:

The bad thing is that kids check B/R ,check ESPN, and Oklahoma recruits those kids. . .

    • ratman says:

Bleacher Report is great comedy. You must go there for that!!

  • Jordan Esco says:

Friends don’t let friends read B/R. I thought we knew this 😉

Nice little bit on Alec Hansen here. He should have a great season in 2016.

  • Stephen says:

    We have a BOOM??

  • Stephen says:

    BOOM! 405! OL Logan Roberson!

    • kokevo says:

      About time something happened

      • Stephen says:

It has been a little dry lately

        • kokevo says:

This might start a little push I got my fingers crossed.

          • EasTex says:

Every time a kid commits to a top program it is one less available offer. We always see kids start committing in the summer and early fall for several reasons, they have done their due diligence and the clock is ticking on the availability of offers.
There will always be a select few who you will hold a slot for(think Beaudreaux).

        • Stephen Dale says:

should have locked up Draper before Alabama offered………..

    • hOUligan says:

And another OK kid!! He committed on the spot, too. Love it!! Must have really shown out at the camps.

  • Sooner Ray says:

    I love BOOM Fridays!

  • Stephen says:

Not sure if the rules allow for it and I personally haven’t seen another CFB team do it but I think it would be bada** if OU could offer something similar or even put “BOOM” in there. (Refresh if you can’t see the image)

  • ccmosaic says:

Jordan, where is your tweet update? You are usually pretty quick about getting info up here? TFB dudes, could you give us a break down on Logan? I am curious how he compares to Rowdy and others.

    • Sooner Ray says:

There is a post on LT saying he was impressive at camp playing with leverage and great with his hands, also has a nasty streak ( which JY will love). Says he committed on the spot when receiving the phone call from coach B.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Think this kid may have a fire in his belly to play for OU? Give me the kid that wants to play at OU any day over the guy who thinks its a business decision.

    • Super K says:

There is quite a bit of texting going on between JY and I regarding this. Quite a bit of civil disagreement. What we do both agree on is that the best OL in the state is prob signing with TCU this yr.

      • kokevo says:

Do yall know the reason we didn’t offer brown?

      • Zack says:

Do you think we will offer brown? And I thought Fredrick was considered the best by many.

        • Super K says:

There’s a lot of good ones in Oklahoma this yr. I personally like the Tyler Brown fella cause I think he had the best combination of length, hips, punch and athleticsm. He didn’t camp at OU though since he’s already committed.

          • ccmosaic says:

K, is this a case where OU needs to start handing out offers to Oklahoma kids Sooner? Why exactly did Brown commit so quickly to TCU and not hold out for an OU offer?

          • Zack says:

I don’t think any kid should hold out for the OU offers if the team picked to win the big 12 is willing to offer them. I think it would be wise for bedenbaugh to get after brown.

        • hOUligan says:

Really thought OU was offering Brown soon. Read a few weeks ago about some convo he had with Coach Bob so figured ‘wait on it’. Would appear Coach B and Coach Bob liked Logan’s skills better. Great stuff!!

      • ccmosaic says:

I would love a write up where you and JY compare and share you own personal thoughts. End with each of you explaining why you believe OU offered him and not others. Good idea? I would love it.

      • rphokc says:

so, did we blow it with the one headed to tcu or he’s just not interested in ou

      • SamSooner says:

        Who is it?

      • BoomerDave says:

In all fairness, I think that Coach B has earned the benefit of the doubt on this call. He has proven to be a tireless worker and evaluator. He has selected Roberson over Brown for some reason known only to him. It could be strictly football evaluation related or it could be for other reasons unrelated to football. Whatever the reason, Coach B made a decision and I, for one, will respect it based on his track record. On a side note, it is really refreshing in these times to hear a kid commit on the spot. The kid really wanted to be a Sooner and that says a lot to me.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Sorry, was traveling for the real job the last couple days.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

    Where’s Denzel?

Taking my wife to see it. Saw the others in theaters as well so I figure I’ll keep the tradition alive.

      • Big Higg says:

I too watched them all in theaters. This one had the feel of the first one. None will ever beat the first one but you won’t be disappointed with this one.

  • DCinAZ says:

Interesting convo between coach B and Monty:

Jerry Montgomery ‏@OU_CoachJerryM 18m18 minutes ago

@OU_CoachB coach B is always doing his thing in recruiting because he out works every body else #thetruth

    • Defend Colfax says:

I really hope our staff can get it together and produce a great season, but if not I’m also excited for new blood. Monty and Coach B made it obvious they were outworking everyone on the recruiting trail. Now with Monty gone it seems like Bedenbaugh is still putting in work but theres no Monty. In fact the only one who even seems alive is Kerry Cooks with his 173 DB offers.

  • wynwilliams64 says:

What’s going on with Agim and Montgomery on Twitter? I can’t figure it out. TFB have commented about it too. Thanks in advance if anyone knows.

    • kokevo says:

I know he listed his final 4 and ou wasn’t in it today might be over that. But idk

    • ccmosaic says:

Would you mind reporting some of it? I went to both of their accounts and do not see any interaction between the two. On Montgomery’s I see a lot of OU though. Sorry but it looks like he still wants to be here.

      • Stephen says:

OU was kept out of his final 4, but some comments both he and other he retweeted may suggest otherwise. It’s a tough read from the outside.

      • wynwilliams64 says:

A Mike Stoops parody account made fun of Agim for listing Baylor in his top four. Agim retweeted the stoops tweet and Monty told Agim to keep his head up (or something along those lines). It wasn’t as interesting as I had originally thought.

  • KJ1123 says:

How is this kid (Roberson) only a 2 star? He moves better than alot of 4 stars Ive seen in this class. Active feet, good body control. Maybe not a natural bender but makes up for it in finishes. Good get for B and the OLine.

    • Stephen says:

Oklahoma kids don’t get the ratings they deserve for political reasons as suggested in here last summer under the Dahu Green evaluation.

      • KJ1123 says:

True, star ratings are extremely subjective. Alot of kids get unfairly hyped up so ranking sites have something they can sell or drive traffic to their sites. Oklahoma, as well as many other states, have some really good players that get passed over unfortunately.

    • DCinAZ says:

Pretty much what I thought. This kid is a beast. He’ll get his third star though I bet.

  • Stephen says:

Just a off-the-topic little side note, hearing that Derrick Woods will be signing with UCLA for next season.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

So since we are only taking 2 guards we will be waiting on Mr Budreaux now huh?

    • Katyboomer says:

I think he is a OT not a OG, but we take him no matter what

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

Some sites have him being a guard.

        • Katyboomer says:

Gotcha, I still think we take him, then put him where we need him. I know your question was about how many OG we take and I am not sure either. I wonder how much it’s going to help us with OT now that the NFL says we are OT U?

          • Lane Gilstrap says:

I’m sure it might help a little. But realistically we hauled in an excellent class last year before being named OT U.

          • Katyboomer says:

Agreed, Coach B brought in a really good class in last year. I have to say I was a little worried about this last BOOM, but in Coach B I trust. I know out of all the country he picked this player so I am super pumped to see how he does once he gets to OU.

          • Lane Gilstrap says:

The guy looks like a road grader. Check out his videos. He won’t be a two star guy.

          • Sooner 76 says:

Right now OU has more tackles than guards, although it’s very hard to tell sometimes. By my count, 8 tackles, 6 guards, and 2 centers with the newcomers. And that’s counting Dru Samia as a guard, b/c that’s how he’s listed on the roster. However, BB talked about him as a RT on signing day, so who knows. And 3 or 4 of the inside guys can play either center or guard.

So is that clear as mud?

          • Katyboomer says:

Never can have enough OT and with the new O we are going to run it might not be a bad idea to move some of the current OT down to OG.

        • Jordan Esco says:

He’ll be a guard for OU

    • Sooner 76 says:

How many linemen have you read OU is taking?

  • normanhighsooner23 says:

it’s time for US to get some big boys!! Really want Kelly the linebacker!

  • BleedCrimson says:

Man Monty was a big loss

    • Jordan Esco says:

It amazes me some people still try and deny this.

      • Jeff says:

Who said it was not a huge loss? They are clueless

        • blaster1371 says:

Gotta move on. The new DL coach is doing pretty well for a guy who is rather new to recruiting.

      • BoomerDave says:

I’ve checked in on this site everyday, several times a day, since Monty quit, I’ve never read where anyone ever said that Monty’s recruiting wouldn’t be missed.

    • JB says:

Best recruiter I’ve seen in a long time…I would have been interested to see what he could do as a co-DC if he had real authority and not just a title. Would have been nice to see him and Cooks on the same staff along with Bedenbaugh and Gundy. Serious recruiting!

    • Calling boomerdave. Just saying.

      • Boom says:

Brandon, since you are closer to the situation, if OU were to offer would it fall on deaf ears? Or, is there a chance if offered he would attend OU.

        • At one point, he would’ve committed to OU on the spot. Now, him and his family are very upset, and almost hurt, by their lack of interest. He grew up an ou fan. His room and bathroom was all ou. At this point, from what I’m told, OU has a major, major up hill battle if they choose to join in. Heck, OU may not like him as much as others. Its all in the eye if the beholder. Time will only tell.

          • Boom says:

Appreciate it. Not only his talent but I would like to see some more Okie’s in the locker room. I hope this plays out for OU but based on current events, I will manage my expectations.

          • Lane Gilstrap says:

            Darn you Mike Stoops

          • Daryl says:

Darn you Tim Kish! Yet another talent he is going to sit on and never contact and then will offer last minute and lose. How in the crap did this guy have a reputation for recruiting because I have seen 0 that proves that!

          • Boom says:

Daryl, I believe the coaches have been by several times and watched him practice. The coaches just didn’t pull the offer trigger.

          • Daryl says:

I know they have watched him but watching and being in contact with people are two different things. Every year we have heard how there is a linebacker that says he can’t get ahold of or hasn’t heard from Kish is a while. Where as when you hear athletes talk about Gundy, Montgomery, Bendenbough, Cooks you hear them talk about how after they talk to them and have a relationship. You never here that about Kish. It’s one thing to extend an offer late if you have been in constant contact and talking with the athlete it’s another to do basically nothing and then try to initiate relationship and offer late.

          • blaster1371 says:

Ummmm the hulk and Deberry. I know Monty was the big hook for those kids but Kish kept them on the line and reeled them in. I think Bolton is going to be another dude we will talk about, in a good way. in future seasons.

          • Daryl says:

Watch the interview with Deberry and his father they never once mention Kish. Not once. They talk about Monty and Stoops. The hulk is the only recruit that has actually mentioned Kish and that was because the reporter named specifically. All his other interviews he talks about other coaches not Kish. just saying.

          • blaster1371 says:

What reasons do you think OU has for not offering him?

          • Mike Reed says:

Brandon, to me that screams of a pompous arrogance. I’m upset the kid hasn’t received an OU offer, but I’d rather see a little humility out of him and his family. If he’s truly a born and bred Sooner and wants an OU offer then he should continue to work his Ass off to impress the coaches (send film, attend camps, visit campus often, etc.,etc.) and quit whining. Don’t be bypassing an OU camp to attend a Kansas camp then get your feelings hurt when you’re not offered……I digress

          • EasTex says:

I thought his visit to Kansas was for an unofficial, not even a camp.

          • What!? He didn’t attend KU camp. He went to visit their staff because the HC wanted to offer. You go where you’re guaranteed an offer. I disagree. Draper has visited OU 3 times. You are off base on your facts.

          • BoomerDave says:

Whoa!!! Don’t attack Mike Reed about being wrong on his facts when Jordan was the one who told us in in the comments of Wednesday’s OP that Levi skipped OU’s camp to camp at Kansas. Those were Jordan’s words. Mike was just repeating Jordan.

          • No, they weren’t. EastTex in the comment below even said it was for unofficial. You have an agenda, Dave. We get it. Get off your high horse. We get accused of being sunshine pumping. No sunshine here. I’m done debating with you.

          • Drew says:

Brandon, I think you’re being a little unfair to Dave. While I don’t have much of an opinion on Draper one way or the other (I really don’t know enough about LBs to form an opinion), I was also under the impression that Draper skipped OU to camp at KU.

          • Mike Reed says:

Here is where I heard about Draper bypassing an OU camp to camp at Kansas. This is a quote by Jordan Esco on Wednesday’s Open Post.
“This is a kid in your backyard(ish) who is only continuing to garner more and more attention, if not actual offers (yet), from schools. The longer you wait, the more likely IMO you create to wide a gap to make up.

I mean the kid just turned down a chance to camp w/ OU to instead camp at Kansas.”

If that’s bogus information, then again…my bad for repeating what Esco said.

          • BoomerDave says:

Good luck getting a comment or retraction back from Brandon.

          • J J says:

He did not camp, but several Collinsville kids did

          • Jordan Esco says:

Camp, unofficial, what difference does it really make? It’s semantics. Whichever it was (an unofficial, apparently. My bad.) he still went to it at KU instead of OU, which was always the point. I fail to see how one makes it any better?

          • Mike Reed says:

I agree 100% Jordan. Doesn’t make a difference. After quoting you on the “OU/KU camp” Brandon jumped on me for not having my facts straight. Was just trying to show him why I said it. No big deal. Carry on.

          • Jordan Esco says:

            Right on. No worries 🙂

          • BoomerDave says:

Yes they were!! Why are you being such an a$$ today. First you attack Mike Reed for saying that Draper attended KU’s camp this week. Now you are calling me a liar for pointing out the “fact” that Jordan is the one who said that. This is Jordan’s quote verbatim “I mean, the kid just turned down a chance to camp w/ OU to instead camp at Kansas”. There were a ton of comments about him camping at KU, but nobody corrected it, including you. Do you guys ever talk amongst yourself? You just reported that the Drapers are “very upset” at OU, but Super K says they are not upset at all! Jordan says that Draper camped Wednesday at KU, you say he didn’t. And you accuse me of having an agenda? What’s my agenda, Brandon? Personally, it seems to me that you have the agenda. It appears that you have gotten so close to the Drapers that you’ve lost all objectivity. JMO. You accuse me of lying when I was dead on (for which I’m sure there will be no apology) and of having an agenda. If you want to be a professional journalist, act professional.

          • BoomerDave says:

What is your problem with me? I log in to TFB this morning and the first thing I read is your trolling me like a little junior high boy writing “calling boomerdave. Just saying”, about something I never said. And now this?? I don’t think I’ve ever commented on anything you’ve ever posted on here, ever, until just above when you falsely attacked Mike Reed. And then you came after me for pointing out where you were wrong. I know you now know that Jordan said what you said he never said, yet no retraction, no apology, no nothing. Crickets. You dish it out with venom, but when proven wrong, nothing. Pretty weak, IMO.

          • My problem is that you have gone to the extreme by name calling. That said, I apologize. You, however, have come off as condescending in your rants. As to Esco KU claim. I quickly corrected him on that fact. You can’t pick one thing out and keep another just to prove your point.

          • Mike Reed says:

I may be wrong on my facts and for that I apologize. My bad. That still doesn’t change the fact of he and his family being “very upset and almost hurt by their lack of interest”. That’s the arrogance I’m talking about. There’s thousands of kids playing football that would love an OU offer. If he wants an offer, then earn it like every other kid that was/is offered. IF that’s the Draper family attitude, then I’m jumping off his bandwagon and moving on to the next talented linebacker waiting in line that’s a bit more humble. That’s all I’m saying. Thanks for what you do Brandon Drumm.

          • BoomerDave says:

No need to apologize. You were only repeating what Jordan had told us.

          • J J says:

Not that it matters…. But at least 3 kids that I know ;0(for a fact) of from Collinsville actually went to the KU camp that weekend. Could’ve been more, maybe it’s also a nice convenience for it to have been same weekend… There are a bunch if very tight close kids & families

          • J J says:

See my reply to Brandon. I know of at least 3 other teammates. That went to KU that same weekend.

      • BoomerDave says:

Just saying what?? Lol! Find where I ever said he would not get an Alabama offer? Alabama is offering a ton of people, approaching 300 offers to ’16 kids. Not surprised at all by his offer. I have been simply pointing out that Alabama along with Clemson and Oklahoma had not offered yet. But thanks for putting false words in my mouth.

        • Super K says:

Alabama is usually about a yr ahead in terms of their evals so you may be seeing more 2017 offers. Generally though they don’t offer a lot of kids. I personally think Draper is a prospect I would’ve offered but like I said the other day, every scout/program needs to learn to formulate their own opinion independent of others. If OU evaluated him and didn’t feel they should offer then while I disagree with their assessment, I believe it would be strange to offer now just because someone else did. You either believe in your eval process or you don’t. Nick Saban didn’t care that OU did not offer.

          • blaster1371 says:

Remember that kid out of Texass with the long Italian sounding name – Magiliovingiani ( I know I’m slaughtering that) played linebacker. He was committed to OU for a while then flipped to the Aggies. He played some as a freshman but in certain formations and more of a DE. He played some the next two years and that was about it. He was seen as a “must get” by many an OU fan. He was a four star or ESPN 300. This kid was someone most teams would have wanted on the roster but he was not a program changer.

Based on what I have seen I think Draper should be offered HOWEVER I have to think the OU coaches 1) know much better than I do what they need at linebacker 2) can evaluate talent better than I can and 3) know who they are recruiting which I have no idea about other than what I read here. I for one kinda cringe when we offer a kid some 20 months from signing day. Texass did that for years (wanted recruits to commit thier junior year) and many of them did not pan out or did not continue on their projected development levels.

          • EasTex says:

In the case of Texsa, if a kid got a serious injury that required rehab they would pull their offer.

          • blaster1371 says:

I read that a few times in the past. That another thing I like about Stoops is I know of two players the last few seasons who had offers then got hurt and OU was able to still willing to get them to OU on scholarship.

          • JB says:

Jordan Mastrogiovanni, I think. Yeah, I haven’t been terribly impressed with him, and he doesn’t play football anymore.

          • EasTex says:

I made it a point to watch him on TV and he seemed very slow to react with no quickness.

          • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

It was Tim’s fault. He didn’t recruit Jordan well. He should be fired. It doesn’t matter that Jordan isn’t even playing football anymore. Tim was wrong. He’s terrible. He’s awful. He doesn’t know what he’s doing.

          • EasTex says:

            LOL!
I actually breathed a sigh of relief that he went gAggie after seeing him play.

          • Boom says:

That was Venables. Kish wasn’t even here.

          • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

            No.

          • Sooner 76 says:

Mastro played a little as a true freshman as an OLBer (#45); I remember seeing him in the Bama game and he was getting owned.

Last year, he changed numbers (#7), and started in the middle for them. Looked ok to me, but, as you say, not a program changer.

The DT who thought so highly of himself, Justin Manning, has hardly played at all in two years.

          • BoomerDave says:

I think Alabama offers a lot more kids than you think. Someone posted on here the other day from a site that Alabama had offered like 260+ kids in the 2016 class (which was like 3rd most in the country) compared to just over 100 for OU. Not sure how that many offers plays out, it seems like a ton of offers to me. Although I do think it would be strange if OU were to offer tomorrow, I don’t think it would be strange if they offered in the fall with more game film and game experience under his belt. His coach has said that OU has told him that they really like him and want to come watch him play in person and evaluate more film. I don’t see anything wrong with that. If a kid, who grew up a Sooner fan would get his feelings hurt that his favorite team won’t offer him as a SOPH, then I think that is being a little thin skinned. JMO.

          • EasTex says:

Bob posted the numbers the other day, bama had offered 215 and OU 149. That was a couple of days ago.

          • Sooner 4Ever says:

I find it very hard to believe that Alabama has that many offers out. Could you provide an actual source, one that has any legitimacy, because I also read on the internet that the aliens have replaced the leader of every country in the world with clones and the planet is being secretly governed by interstellar overlords.

Why would Alabama offer 260+ kids when pretty much any recruit ranked outside the top 150 would commit almost instantly because they know they are not likely to get a better offer and would want to seize the ship while it’s still there for the taking.

          • BoomerDave says:

I’m sorry, my numbers were a little off, but Alabama still has at least 215 offers and counting out for 2016. Not sure how you can build relationships with that many kids. ,

          • Sooner 4Ever says:

Again, 215 according to whom? It’s certainly possible they have that many offers out, but I would be surprised. They land classes filled almost exclusively with 4 and 5 Star kids. If they have offers out to 40+ 3 star kids already, I doubt they’d have any room left for the 4 and 5 star kids when they get ready to commit. Those 3 star kids with an offer are gonna commit before the 5 star player takes the spot.

          • BoomerDave says:

Believe Rivals or not, your choice. Bob Edwards provided us with the source.

          • EasTex says:

            Bama currently has 14 commits.
            5*=1
            4*=7
            3*=4
            https://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/teamrank
That’s 25% of their total commits by 3s already, whereas they signed 5 3*s in 2015 class of 24.

I don’t know how bama handles their recruiting or if they pull offers or not.
As for the the numbers of offers, Bob Edwards did the leg work on that research a few days ago.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Alabama has offered 216 for 2016 Oklahoma has 149. The source is rivals.

          • Super K says:

Dave, the Drapers IMO don’t seem thin skinned at all. Other schools simply showed more genuine interest in Levi and the family reciprocated. They spent an entire day with OSUs staff and they really enjoyed their time with coach Gundy and coach Spencer. To the Drapers OU didn’t appear as interested as some other schools.

          • BoomerDave says:

Just going by what Brandon said earlier that the family is “very upset” at OU, his words, not mine. Just think it’s a little silly to get angry over not offering a SOPH when they have told them that they are looking forward to seeing him in the fall. Sounds like egos are getting in the way a little bit.

          • Brien Brown says:

And if that’s the case rather it’s from him or his family or both then we probably don’t need him, IMO.

          • OohRah Mama says:

No need to stub one’s toe bloody jumping to conclusions.

          • Brien Brown says:

I could care less my thoughts have always been if he wants to be a Sooner he will be if not of well. We will get kids rather it’s him or not. But, my thought is if it’s already a drama situation just walk away.

          • Super K says:

Perhaps you aren’t considering the soph. Levi has worked his whole life for an OU offer. There is a reason his film looks better than most folks senior film. I don’t think it’s about an offer. I think in general a staff can get away with not offering a young person as long as you recruit them in the right way. OU simply didn’t from what I gather. While other staffs didn’t offer, they made him feel there was genuine interest. They didn’t feel that from OU and perhaps because OU is not interested. Which takes me to my original point. Everyone has to do their own evals.

          • BoomerDave says:

Like I said, I think egos are getting bruised. I heard his HS coach say that OU is recruiting him well, just not willing to make an offer until they see him in a game situation. The coach understood, but apparently the Drapers don’t. I just don’t see growing up an OU fan, working, as you just said, his whole life (all 15 yrs of it) for an OU offer and choosing who you will play for based on who shows you the most love as a freaking SOPH!! And then to hear Brandon say that the family is very upset about the lack of an OU offer, just reinforces my point. If his heart is and has always been with the Sooners, just chill a bit, let the coaches do what they’ve said that they are going to do, that is make it to a game or 2, watch more film and then see if an offer is forthcoming before getting all upset at OU before they do what they promised him they would do.

          • Super K says:

I don’t want to contradict the coach but I think the story you are getting isn’t quite the full story. I can’t speak for Brandon but when I spoke to the Drapers they don’t seem upset, they are just going about trying to do what’s best for their son which is to reciprocate to the schools that show the most interest. They seem like amazing and dedicated folks to me. I think Draper will be a good one.

          • Drew says:

Thanks for your perspective. It’s nice to have respectful, second opinions. Part of why this site is so great.

          • OohRah Mama says:

And as a parent I would be just that way as well, K. I’m not going to make suppositions about another family’s feelings. I absolutely love getting home state kids whose hearts are all Sooner. I think for those of us on the outside looking in, it’s a “wait and see” issue.

          • JB says:

I’m just sick of the way Bob & Co undervalue Oklahoma talent. Every OU championship was won with mostly Oklahoma talent. Bob’s ONLY national championship was won with mostly Oklahomans on the roster and in the 2 deep. That 2000 was clearly superior to FSU (or Miami for that matter). Since then, they’ve been overreliant on TX players, which has resulted in no National Championships in 3 tries, and one humiliating loss to USC, combined with some other humiliating losses since. I’m wondering if these coaches are ever going to realize they need to tap this state quite a bit more, because what they’ve been doing since then isn’t working to produce the desired results? Sadly, I don’t think they will, especially since Mike & Tim are still employed here.

          • Brien Brown says:

Ok who was all from Oklahoma on that OU 2000 team that started and was on the 2 deep. I can think of Calmus, Burcham (maybe), Trent Smith and maybe Skinner where all Oklahoma kids, and of course Blake Ferguson our punter, but who else?

          • Sooner 4Ever says:

            How quickly we forget….

Just off the top of my head, in the 2 deep (some of these players you already mentioned mentioned):

Jeremy Wilson-Guest, Cory Callens, Rocky Bright, Rocky Calmus, JT Thatcher, Michael Thompson, Roger Steffen, Cory Heineke, Matt Anderson, Bubba Burcham (starting center), Barry Holleyman,Scott Kempenick, Trent Smith, and Seth Litrell.

And the starting kicker and punter were Okies – Tim Duncan and the aforementioned Ferguson.

          • Brien Brown says:

The class we signed going into that season was a pretty nice recruiting class as was the following class. But, let me remind you a lot of those guys Blake recruited which I know goes back to the point he was making of Stoops undervaluing Oklahoma talent. But, Blake wasn’t winning with these kids, and Stoops came in and moved kids around and BAM things really started looking good, think Stoops makes more with less and less with more if that makes any sense whatsoever. But, that was a lot of talent on those squads and kids really played well. Some really above their skill set and level.

          • Sooner 4Ever says:

Cousin Brien, I’ve never really cared who recruited them, they were here and hung a banner… and a good many of the contributors on that team were Okies; which is the question you asked. There have been a lot of contribution of Oklahoma talent on every team that ever hung a NC banner at OU.

I tend to agree with the suggestion by others that Stoops’ staff has historically undervalued the talent pool in OK. I would venture a guess, that the 2000 team had more contribution from OkPrep players than any Stoops team since… and it’s the only one to win it all.

**And I called you “cousin” because we share the same last name.

Here is the thing, I get making an offer in order for a kid to be like hey these guys really want me. But, in a retrospect, maybe Stoops and the staff has went the route of offering kids to just offer them, and in that process have failed the kids by not developing a good relationship with them, maybe in my eyes part of the reason for the guys leaving the team not feeling like they are wanted and was just a piece of meat. Not saying that’s the case, but, maybe just maybe OU is making more strides by, talking with this kid and saying hey we want you here, but, we are making sure you are the right fit for us and us for you. Mean if Clemson is in on this kid as well and not offering is just another example of maybe they want to build relationship with him. Let’s not make a bigger deal about Saban making an offer to this kid then we need to. I live in the Tulsa area and seen a lot of great kids play and Draper plays for a decent squad but class size does matter it seems, but he is no different then Terry as far as the comp they play against and I can tell you that for sure. There is a ton of talent in Oklahoma def in the small school ranks and they get unnoticed because they play for small schools. OU fans wanted a BOOM and we got one last night but more than half where like well he ain’t the best kid. Who cares get the kids that want to play for you and the program forget the “STAR” kids mean get them if you can as long as they fit your system. Mean this is a ramble more than anything but still. Think Draper will get his OU offer and I think once he does I am willing to bet OU will be very much in the mix think we should stop getting upset over an OU “slow play” we don’t know any of the story or the reason. For all we know maybe he don’t want to play for OU if we wind up signing kids like the Kellys and the other stud LB’s we are after, mean if those kids are as good as we all think he won’t see much playing time until maybe his Junior or Senior year, just some food for thought also.

    • Stephen says:

I’m for it. Just means he isn’t burning any bridges incase he decides he wants to come back at some point.

  • Mike Reed says:

Dang that pisses me off that we haven’t offered Draper yet!! What the H…E… Double hockey stick is going on?

  • John Garner says:

Wow Bama offers Draper and we haven’t. WTF! Over.

  • EasTex says:

I am unmoved about the lack of an OU offer for Draper.
If the coaches believe he fits then they will offer if not they won’t. There is much more to offering a kid than a video and the state he is from.
I just can’t see getting worked up over a recruit’s video from a 6’2″ 215lb sophomore LB. If his heart has always been with the Sooners he should just wait patiently and see if they offer.
Personally, I am much more interested in the 2016 class.

    • BoomerDave says:

      Wise words.

    • Defend Colfax says:

Truth. If he is truly a die hard sooner he will be a sooner.

    • Not to be nit-picking, but Levi was measured at 6’3 225lb. Just 16 years old.

      • Defend Colfax says:

I’ve also seen him listed at 230. But you are missing the point. I would love to see him get an offer. I’m sure EasTex would too. But we’re more interested in OU football players. This kid has two full school years with two full season of high school ball to go. He has to wait to get into R rated movies, so he can wait on his OU offer.

      • EasTex says:

Thanks, the rivals page is outdated.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

He’ll grow into a d-lineman…and hence, cannot tell at this stage if he’ll fit OU at that position

    • hOUligan says:

Generally in full agreement with you, ETx, but starting to think otherwise. Agree on the ‘heart/’as big an OU fan as he says part…and while Saban/’Bama is just 1 offer, if he gets an offer from FSU, I expect the bandwagon is going to fill fast. Just think if the staff could have been ‘wooing/communicating’ with the kid more and perhaps he would have felt said offer was coming right around the corner…but I obviously don’t know the full story and how much/kind of communication there has been/is. Just going by what ‘others’ are saying is coming from his family.

    • hOUligan says:

And just going to toss this out there…maybe Draper is a better fit as a ‘Bama style LB or ACC compared to what OU looks for in a B12-2 LB. Maybe being 90% in coverage is not the major requirement there and Draper hasn’t played ‘in coverage’ as much and therefore the need to ‘see’ him more. If so…so be it. Gotta get the players that fit the OU defense. But it would be a shame to see him wearing their shade of crimson and not OUrs.

  • Brien Brown says:

Hey here is some food for thought there was a kid that played at a 2A school, he was about 6’2 and about 235 ran around a 4.6, he played both ways, he couldn’t be blocked on D was disruptive think like 11.5 sacks and like 27 tackles for loss probably 90 plus tackles as a DE, on O played TE you couldn’t cover him and he probably caught 11 TD’s in a balanced O, this kid was Senior this year at Nowata and he went to NEO, but he was every bit the player Draper was, I bet you look up tape you’ll see what I mean kid was a beast yet played 2A ball. Lucky for Draper he has 100 plus tackles and everyone thinks he is amazing playing 4A ball, I think he is good but, are we ready to say he is the next sure thing. I bet this kid I am talking about from Nowata could play D1 ball for anyone but guess his small school label hurt him! His name is Bryce Bell btw the kid from Nowata.

  • Boomer15 says:

Lot of hand wringing on the lack of an offer from OU for Levi. I get it I really do. I also get that the parents/Levi may be a little put off that OU has not offered yet. I also get that Bob Stoops has his ways and he may be set in them and reluctant to change. All these things are clear.

With that said though, with everyone running in a panic and worrying about whether OU is recruiting Draper the “right” way…let me pose this question about the kid who has worked his entire 15 years to get to OU…

If/when offered, would he pull a Roberson and commit on the spot?

I doubt this and it has nothing to do with Bama offering or FSU offering or the Pope offering. His recruitment will be a long one and if OU chooses to get more heavily involved they are doing it for their reasons and the same if they choose not too. More along the lines of Steven Parker than Logan Roberson (who also has said he has always wanted to be a Sooner). That question I asked, just food for thought.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

(starts counting the number of months until the 2017 class signing day)…
(quickly realizes there are a lot of months left)

  • Daryl says:

To me not offering Draper isn’t the worst thing ever. The coaches may want to see more or think something needs to develop. What I want to know is are they evening cautiously recruiting him. If you think he has a chance then part of your job is to reach out and have a relationship with him. There have been guys in the past that we offered later and it was fine because we had put in the time and communication to do it. The fact that he is not camping with is and family is obviously upset leads me to believe we have not communicated well with Draper. That in my opinion is lazy recruiting. Especially when the kid is in your own backyard.

  • Stephen says:

I think we all saw this Draper offer coming so not going to act surprised but still pretty disappointed. On the other hand, we got a pretty big commitment last night. I’ve always been one to some defend some star rstings here and there but this guy looks legit and ratings are way off on him.

    • EasTex says:

I like what I have seen of Roberson and apparently so did the coaches at the Elite camp he attended, the same camp Draper was invited too but did not attend.

  • Matt says:

What’s the word on Jordan Thomas? Should we not be expecting big things from him? I thought he was pretty good for a true freshman last year but haven’t heard anything about his development. Did he struggle more than I realized?

  • Zack says:

Xavier kelly or Bledsoe commit? Boom 785 from Bobby

    • EasTex says:

Was just watching OU’s Roberson finish 2nd in the women’s 400m final when the streamer showed LB Eric Fowler committed to LSU.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Nice two booms in one weekend. That’s what I’m talking about.

  • EasTex says:

    BOOM updates always appreciated.
I like what I have seen of QM.

  • William Ryan says:

Double boom this weekend love it!

  • KJ1123 says:

Coach B killin it this weekend!

  • Tom Turman says:

Wowwwww, coach B is the man!

  • Super K says:

Thank God something happened today! Too much tension in this OP. Needed this to lighten up the place 🙂

  • Jason Vos says:

Draper is a 2017 kid, no need to get your panties in a bunch. He will get his OU offer. Not like he is committing anytime soon. He is still making the rounds, and visiting out of state schools.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

How many years of eligability does QM have?

  • Travis Coyle says:

    Hell ya!!!

  • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Boom, boom, can we add a third for a trifecta?

  • John Garner says:

Awesome! TFB is on top of it this weekend. Coach B as well. Thanx!

  • Dustin says:

I can’t turn my head for a minute! Nice weekend.

  • BoomerDave says:

Best thing about Mittermeier is that he counts towards the 2015 class. Let’s hope he’s a good one.

    • John Garner says:

I imagine he is if Bill recruited him. He’s like Gundy: he knows a good one when he sees him.

      • BoomerDave says:

I can only assume since someone said that he had 4 years to play 3 that he has a pretty heavy summer school load, so we shouldn’t expect him in until August.

        • Tom Turman says:

Not necessarily. He was a full qualifier out of high school. He’s likely only taking a normal load this summer, is anything. He was originally supposed to be a 2016 guy, but he’s reclassified as a 2015.

          • BoomerDave says:

So you’re saying since he was a full qualifier out of HS, he doesn’t have to graduate from JUCO first? That would be great! I guess I wasn’t aware of that rule. Thanks for enlightening me!

          • Sooner 76 says:

            Yes, that is totally correct.

          • Tom Turman says:

That’s correct. Only non-qualifiers out of high school have to graduate from JUCO.

          • ND52 says:

Why then did he go the JUCO route @tomturman:disqus?

          • Tom Turman says:

He wasn’t recruited coming out of high school. He had no D-1 offers.

          • ND52 says:

Wow. Was he a late bloomer perhaps @tomturman:disqus? Hard to imagine a guy his size not getting a single D-I offer.

          • Tom Turman says:

That I don’t know. Kansas isn’t the most heavily recruited state.

        • John Garner says:

I didn’t know that. I just read where he may reclassify as a 2015 recruit. That would be awesome. Give us some much needed depth.

Just a heads up, I have deleted many of the Draper comments below including my own. It’s nothing personal to anyone but the dissension is unecessary and there is clearly a lot of misinformation. Let’s just enjoy the weekend, if this matter needs to addressed it can be done so at another time.

Can Coach B go to Draper’s school.

Texting, tweeting and coding (oh, and rap “music”–I’m sure Johann Sebastian Bach would cringe at what qualifies as “music” these days) has slaughtered the English language. The reading and writing I see from kids today literally saddens me and causes me great concern for the future. No wonder China’s overtaking us…the read and write our language better than we do.

    • J J says:

      You on the tweeter?

  • Jonathan Taylor says:

They need to get Coach B on recruiting Draper. I’m starting to feel like Mike and Kish are purposefully ignoring him. I know it’s probably not true, but I’m getting that feeling on a few in-state guys.

    • EasTex says:

I have a feeling that OK prep star Dahu Green will be a legendary Sooner despite his being a late commit.
      https://youtu.be/hZf99bSW1HQ

      • Stephen says:

This 100% I spent all last summer and fall begging for an offer for Dahu on here. Still betting on him to be an impact player within the next two seasons.

      • KellyT. says:

eastTex help me out here. in regards to Dahu Greens commit. wasnt he slow played by the Sooners up until Riley got their .Riley offered then Green went on an official visit and did t like it? for some reason i thought he signed elsewhere. after the OU offer. I follow reciting very tightly but this has been bothering me.

        • Boom says:

KellyT – the previous staff, Heupel & Norvell didn’t recruit Dahu and he wasn’t in their plans. Riley comes aboard and he and Gundy (I believe) recruit him very hard and we were fortunate to change his mind. All of this happened within the last month or less of recruiting. Pleased for Dahu but more pleased for him being a SOONER.

          • Sooner 4Ever says:

I believe Simmons was instrumental in Dahu’s late switch to OU… he had been recruiting him hard to WSU, iirc. Any potential resentment that Dahu may have felt as a result of us not showing interest under Huep/Norvell was likely offset by Simmons ability to say to him “I’ve wanted you all along and you know that.”

        • EasTex says:

Nossir, he signed with OU. I implied in my post that it doesn’t really matter what happens before signing day.

    • JB says:

Watching that again reminded me how much more cerebral he is than the average football coach. I feel fortunate to have him on the OU staff. He reminds me of Kevin Wilson in many ways.

      • JB says:

I will always admire how Wilson stood in front of the media for as long as they’d ask questions and find a way to take responsibility for losses that had nothing to do with the offense. I forget the opponent, but we lost because the D couldn’t stop a popcorn fart. I listened to the post-game show and press conference. Venables’ D was torched, as usual, and BV couldn’t tuck his tail fast enough to avoid the media or any uncomfortable questions. KW took every question asked, made no excuses and didn’t break out his résumé (two words: Kelvin Sampson), and blamed himself and his offense for the loss because they did not score 70 points to bail the D out. Any respect I had for BV was shredded that day, but KW earned my respect and the benefit of the doubt for years to come.

Bedenbaugh seems to have that same kind of stand-up guy mentality.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Mittermeier has to be a redshirt candidate this season, right?

    • cush creekmont says:

Unless this is “mistaken” (Mittermeier) “also has the option of reclassifying to the 2015 class, thus making him immediately eligible for this coming season.” I would think he can come in August if not for summer school.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I understand that, but we have decent depth this year, and some young guys that need snaps, seems to me that since Mittermeier CAN redshirt, he might be a candidate to do just that, get stronger, and spend a year learning the OU systems, then he can play the next three years.

Of course, maybe he’s good enough to come in and make the 2 deep from day 1. I dunno. Just speculating.

        • cush creekmont says:

Okay. I see your point – didn’t consider the “may” part. He will be raw. I was just excited that he is eligible and we need all the linemen we can get in case of injury.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

I think the best man will play this year, new to the team or not.

Roberson’s film is impressive. Very athletic and great feet. What I like most about him is that he finishes plays. The play isn’t over until he is on top of someone. Man, if we could land him and Boudreaux, that would be one hell of a guard tandem for the future.

    • JB says:

      Meh…

Roberson & Mittermeier are 2 fine, capable OLs and there are MUCH BETTER OLs available than Diesch. I’m not going to get all broken up about losing a 3 star commitment. My sights are pointed a little higher. I don’t mean to besmirch him and good luck to him…but I’d rather have Richard Merritt, Jauan Williams, Garrett Bolles, Jean Delance, Parker Boudreaux, or even Rowdy Fredrick.
