Apparently I’m going to surprise (some of) you and spare you from a rant on the idiocy of Big 12 expansion rearing its ugly head yet again. I’ll simply leave it at this and let you all hash out the rest.

Nothing has changed when it comes to this topic. The Big 12 has been “considering” expansion for however many years now and have “considered” themselves out of any expansion candidate worth a flip. But common sense be damned, that won’t stop them this time (supposedly). I look forward to being a proud member of Conference USA 2.0.

Ya know I’d have to agree. The older I get, the more I appreciate that silence can be a strong form of wisdom

          • Golfluvr13 says:

yOU are wise beyond your years when you learn that!

          • SoonerMagic76 says:

Oh I’m not sure I’m wise yet, just able to acknowledge wisdom when I see it.

Although I do have wisdom enough to cheer for OU and never wear orange, which has got to automatically put me and all the other Sooner fans like me in the top percentile of the wisest people in the nation!

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Amen brother! I went to buy a new pair of boots last week and the lady was showing me these really comfortable ones, but they only came in orange. Of course I had an OU shirt on and I told her I will never in life wear orange. She kept saying that my jeans would cover the orange up, and I told her NEVER IN LIFE. I got a sweet pair of hand stitched acid wash green top boots. LOL

Nice! Gotta let her know that you mean business. New boots day is always a good day

Morning all! Maybe Ealy will be the boom today instead of Marquis, as most of us have speculated. Granted, the article says he most likely will NOT be deciding soon, but who knows when it comes to recruiting.

        Morning, Sam! How goes it?

        • SamSooner says:

Two days, counting today, before we (the family) leave for the beach. Of course, I’ll be playing some golf.

          • UGA Sooner says:

Soak up some sun for me. I’m stuck in summer classes until early August.

          • SamSooner says:

Well, I don’t need anymore sun; it would just be hot to me. So, I chill out by the pool, with a book, until the kids whine about me being a lazy lion. Because sand gets everywhere, I really hate going to the beach.

          • UGA Sooner says:

Not a beach guy, either. I prefer the mountains. Nothing is better as a kid than playing in snow in Colorado during the middle of the summer. Have a safe trip! I’ll hold down the fort for you and Hawk.

          • SamSooner says:

            I will and thanks, UGA!

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Me too, other than the golf. It’s hard to get much golf time with a 3 year old and a 5 year old. Have a great trip Sam!

          • SamSooner says:

Lincoln, I feel you. Those are tough and fun years, though. We are heading down to South Carolina, south of Myrtle Beach. Where are you going?

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Heading to Anna Maria Island, FL. Myrtle Beach is like the golf capital of the U.S. Have you ever played in the huge Amateur tourney they have every year?

          • metzker says:

            FOOTBALL,Hawk!

          • SamSooner says:

If I said “expansion” would football be inferred?

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

            Holo Metz

          • SamSooner says:

No. Nowhere near that good. You’re right about the golf courses; there are probably 10-15 courses right next to my uncle’s house, which happens to be on hole 9 of a course.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Oh you don’t have to be good, it’s all handicapped! You could win the whole thing and be a 20. You get to play 4 awesome courses. One year I won my flight (2nd to worst flight I might add) and got to play the championship round against the other flights at TPC Myrtle, I finished tied for 2nd with like an 11 on the 2nd hole, LOL. Was a pretty cool experience.

          • SamSooner says:

Sounds like fun. I’ll have to check it out.
            When do they play it?

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

I think it’s in August every year. I remember one year Roger Clemens won his flight and everybody was calling him the biggest sandbagger. I have kind of traded in golfing for hunting now so I don’t keep up with it as much anymore.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Me too, other than the golf. It’s hard to get much golf time with a 3 year old and a 5 year old. Have a great trip Sam!

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Hey TFB Fellas, any way you guys can put together a general post of how many scholarships are available now and how many the coaches plan on taking in the SS17 and which positions? For example, Omar Manning and CeeDee Lamb are both possibly going to be at the the BBQ Event, so if Omar commits at the event, is there still a spot for Lamb? It would be nice to know the projected numbers. Appreciate the consideration. Have a great day everybody!

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Hey Jordan, curious for your thoughts and anyone’s else’s on this:

How much of OU’s situation in the flailing Big 12 do you put on the Big 12 powers that be, and how much do you put on OU’s leadership (Castiglione, Boren, etc.) for not securing a spot in something stronger? Just curious as to what you see as some underlying reasons for the current position OU is in

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

The real problem is the fact that when conference realignment was going on there were zero playoff talks. The BCS didn’t really matter if you had a championship game or not. Sure it helped but it wasn’t as big of a data point as it is with the playoff committee. I don’t think you can blame the school officials since none of this was planned out. Now if the conferences and school leaders knew about a potential playoff scenario before conference realignment then it’s all on them as far as I’m concerned. Since it doesn’t look like we’ll be changing conferences I think it would be more wise to leave the league at 10. Split into 2 divisions and winner of each division plays each other in the CCG. Divisions don’t need to be a north or south like it was before, just need even divisions. None of us want to see a division of ISU, both Kansas schools, WVU and school X. I just think adding 2-4 teams to reach 12-14 is stupid at this point. No power 5 school will leave their current situation for ours. Which leads me to my next point; I don’t want the league to add a bunch of scrub teams like UCF, Memphis, Cinci (they aren’t that bad), Boise, BYU and some of the other schools I’ve seen. All that will accomplish is an even weaker conference and schools that bring ZERO to the table.

      • SoonerMagic76 says:

        Thanks for the thoughts!
Good point on the BCS vs CFP – definitely a bigger deal to have that “data point” now.
100% agree on both the division point and the adding scrubs point. Divisions have to be done smartly, because a division of ISU, KU, KSU, WVU, and whoever else sounds like something you’d see in the MAC. And as for adding…. I’m becoming less against it as time goes on, but I still want to add the right teams if we’re going to add. Problem is, there’s not a lot of teams available that will really add to the Big 12. All we do by adding a scrub is weaken the conference and give the added team more money than they would have had

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

If we are going to add teams then I’m sorry but UH needs to be one of the teams added. I understand all the recruiting effects something like that would have, but there really isn’t another team worth a crap. I think we need to hop off our high horse and realize we screwed up and this is what we have to resort to. Houston and Cinci are the best choices IMO. If we go with 4 teams then I think you can throw in Memphis ( only bc of fedex ) and then I guess maybe a UCONN bc of their basketball. I’m not a believe that by adding one of the crappy Florida schools that it will automatically mean we start recruiting that state so much better than we currently do. Obviously this is all my opinions but just saying lol

          • SoonerMagic76 says:

I actually agree – I can’t think of any other realistic team that would be better to add. Nah those all seem like quite reasonable thoughts. Those teams all do more for me than someone like Boise or BYU

          • SoonerfanTU says:

Houston could very easily go back to not being very good when Herman leaves. Which he will.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

In the next 2 years, I expect him to be gone from Houston.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Really don’t understand what the fuss is all about in terms of expansion.

They are not going to expand if it is going to cost the teams money. So from a monetary standpoint, you can rest assured that all of the teams will benefit from expansion.

Why the sudden change in recent days? Doesn’t take a rocket surgeon (see what I did there?) to know the Big 12 was “hoping” the ACC wouldn’t get their conference network, and as a result, teams like FSU, Clemson, Louisville, and Miami might consider making a jump to the Big 12 down the road. With them getting the network and locking up GOR for another 20+ years or so, that basically guarantees there won’t be any P5 expansion candidates available for the Big 12 anytime in the next decade or more.

I still think the long-term plan for Boren/OU is to leave for the Big 10. Having said that, I think Boren would prefer to tweak the Big 12, and make it workable for OU. There are a billion reasons why that is the best thing for OU. Where I disagree with most on this board is that I think it’s doable, while some of you do not. But that is where the Big 10 could come into play down the road. Big 12 expands, and 8 years down the road Boren realizes OU is losing out on too many dollars or too much publicity, then Boren simply takes OU to the Big 10. The only way that wouldn’t/couldn’t play out is if part of expansion requires an extension of the GOR. And if Boren agreed to such an extension, all I can say is that he has way more information than any of us do.

I’ll continue beating the drum that the Big 12 isn’t in nearly as bad a shape as some of our fans make it out to be. The biggest problem right now has been a mediocre texas program over the last several years. I still think the conference can add 2-4 teams, and with the right moves, be in a very competitive spot dollar-wise with the SEC and Big 10. But even if you think OU is going to leave down the road, I don’t see why anybody would be against expansion. It doesn’t hurt OU or the Big 12 in any way, err…..any important way, and I actually believe it to be beneficial. Again, they aren’t going to expand and lose money.

Give me Cincy, Memphis, UCONN, and one of the Florida schools, or possibly BYU if we can make that partnership work.

    • UGA Sooner says:

Great post, but I’m more for the SEC. I hate the SEC and I wouldn’t complain about being in the Big 10, but the SEC would help in recruiting and make us more money in the long run, IMO. With ESPN backing the SEC, the SEC is the media’s conference, which means it’s the conference for highschool players. Sure Ohio State and Michigan are popular, but I’m calling for OU to join the SEC over the other conferences purely for the perception of the SEC in today’s youth.

        SEC

        • UGA Sooner says:

*$EC. And you better believe we’d be making some serious $ by joining

        • ouwooferman says:

Hey dave. Not sure if you still go to BCSNN….but if yes, let the mods know that work is restricting the site due to security threats.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Exactly. Perception is the only reason I want the SEC affiliation.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I just don’t see Boren going to the SEC for academic and “cheating” reasons. SEC is dirty. And the academics aren’t anywhere near what they are in the Big 10. I agree the SEC is probably a more attractive fit for football, but that is literally the only thing the SEC has over the Big 10. Maybe location as well.

I’m not a big fan of the travel involved in playing in the Big 10 either. Nor am I a fan of playing their bad football teams. That is why OU has every reason to try to make the Big 12 work, IMO. Of course, if we took ut and KU with us to the Big 10, that would help the travel issue a bit.

        • Walter Sobcek says:

Yes. We need to make the Big 12 work. The BIg 10 is a horrible option. I have spent a lot of time in the Midwest, and it sucks in the winter. Which, by the way, begins in October! Do you really want to play in Wisconsin and Minnesota in November? We get a lot of North Texas kids because their parents are close enough to drive to home games, and most of the road games. Forget about that in the Big 10. We are a Great Plains conference, and should remain that way. Geography matters.

        • UGA Sooner says:

Oh, I agree completely with how dirty the SEC is. The SEC is filthy and I truly believe the only reason teams there don’t get punished is because Mark Emmert also worked at LSU with Saban in the early 2000s. The whole system is rigged. I purely want the SEC for recruiting purposes and a little bit more money than what OU is making now. There are thousands of reasons to not like the SEC move and they are all respectable, but recruiting is the second most important part of college football, IMO. Having a great coach/ stable environment is first, of course. In the end I’ll be fine with whatever happens, but OU will not get the respect they deserve until they ditch the BIG 12, IMO. Be it BIG 10 or SEC, I just OU out of this crap league. It’s all about perception nowadays. We’ve had 1 top 10 recruiting class in the past 5-6 years. Things are indeed looking brighter, but imagine our pull from Cali or Texas with that SEC logo on our jersey. I cannot stand the SEC, but I personally think it’s best for recruiting.

    • ouwooferman says:

      Nice post. Well done sir!

    • SamSooner says:

Great write up. Well thought out.

I don’t see the Big XII as being viewed as a top tier conference. You’re right about that it could be viewed as a strong conference if texsa rights its ship. You could add all of the teams mentioned and not hurt your brand if OU, OSU, TCU, texsa, Baylor and TT hold up their end of the bargain; see the B1G conference. The B1G has as many weak teams as they have strong teams. That would be no different from the Big XII.

However, the Big XII is about to dealt some damage, thanks to Baylor’s mess. They are about to drop off the map. With 11 recruits from their 2016 class having defected, transfers from their 2015 class, bet on underclassmen declaring for the 2017 NFL draft, and finally, practically 0 (zero) recruits for 2017, Baylor will be irrelevant again.

TT and OSU will not be worth a damn; the $EC is hurting their recruiting in Texas. That leaves OU, TCU and texsa: even if texsa turned it around, you can’t have three team carrying the banner for a 14-team league. That’s weak.

OU needs to pay the piper and leave. I’m sure they can work out an agreement to pay the millions they will owe, over time. They will still make the same net-revenue they are making today by going to the $EC or B1G.

      • Golfluvr13 says:

I agree with everything you said Sam. But I will say you can have three teams carry your conference if E$PiN gushes all over you, see the $EC! The $ec has as many weak teams as they have strong teams. It is all about perception and what the media spins.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

This is true. But somehow the lower ranked SEC teams beat the teams in other conferences more than they lose to them and this is what fuels much of the talk about the prowess of the SEC.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Sam you really need to understand how the grant of rights works. It’s not about paying them millions. The Big 12 owns the rights to all their home games. No other conference will want us under those terms because they don’t gain anything monetarily from us coming on board.

        • Golfluvr13 says:

Correct, but if the conference implodes the GOR will be defunct. If the conference does not implode, when does the GOR stop? I cannot remember if it was 2019 or later than that.

        • SamSooner says:

What would it take, Bob, to make this league collapse? Kick Baylor out? Prove that the Big XII, by allowing texsa to keep the LHN, is hurting OU’s revenue earning potential?

          • Birddawg says:

Have behind door meetings and make deals to get other schools setup to leave. The more schools that have assurances they get to remain in power 4 conference the better odds big 12 crumbles and no GoR exists.

          • SamSooner says:

I like the idea. But, man, did OU miss its chance to leave.

          • Birddawg says:

Oh they absolutely did… They screwed themselves over
Now they have to watch the teams that made the right moves.. Nebraska and Mizzou make more money.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

They somewhat screwed themselves. We did not really want to be in the Pac-12. I would have hated that. No way I could stay up for a 10PM kickoff.

          • Birddawg says:

            blah, agree PAC would’ve sucked.
BUT, OU had an opportunity to go to SEC.. without OSU… people were getting all touchy feely about the idea of OU/OSU in separate conf.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

True that dawg. OU wants little brother with them when they move. I think that would be a must because wouldn’t the state of Oklahoma have to approve them moving? They are a state run school.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t think bringing OSU with us if we leave is on the table any more. Because I still think the Big 10 is the most likely landing spot, and they don’t want OSU. I don’t think the SEC would take them either. Only spot we “could” land and take OSU with us would be the PAC.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Blech, no Pac-12. LOL! I think if OSU had a decent basketball program the Big 10 would take them. But I also think OU learned it’s lesson and has decided they must do what is best for OU.

          • Birddawg says:

I believe the state did/try to block it in case of happening
BUT, Now OU is leaving to go make 10mil more a year.. and its increasing every year……..
I don’t think any politician will want to go in front of a camera and say “NO our schools remain together in BIG 12. Long tradition of blah blah.. Thats worth more than the 10s of millions OU could gain if they were too leave..” He better make sure he isn’t up for re election.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

            Amen Dawg!

          • SamSooner says:

            Good morning, Golf!

OU really is the middle child, huh? They either have 11am kickoff or 10pm kickoff. LOL!

          • Golfluvr13 says:

LOL! Morning Sam! No OU invented winning championships, we are NOT a middle child. But the media treats us that way. I think the media is trying to destroy the Big 12 as well. 4 power conferences would make their life easier. UGH!

          • AgedBill says:

Be careful, or the paranoids will get you! Lol! s/

          • Walter Sobcek says:

I have always thought the same thing. But the Big 12 has arguably two of the top 5 football programs in history, along with a legit TCU. That alone makes the conference relevant, and they can’t ignore us, no matter how much they would like to, especially once the Shorthorns are fully back.

          • SamSooner says:

I like the idea. But, man, did OU miss its chance to leave.

          • Bob Edwards says:

The problem is, that under current rules it would take eight of ten to vote to disband the league. So it’s not going to happen unless you have landing spots for all the rest. I don’t think that is going to happen. Someone might take KU for their basketball, if they also got us or UT. Who would want ISU or TT or Baylor in their current state. We screwed ourselves by setting up the GOR when we didn’t have the teams in place to make it valuable long term. GOR’s are incredibly hard to get out of from what I here. They have been used in the recording industry for years. That’s why Prince changed his name to a symbol because a Record actually owned his name.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Wait, were the rules different when Neb, Mizzou and A&M left?

          • Bob Edwards says:

I don’t remember them trying to disband the B12 back then.

        • Birddawg says:

          No big 12
          No GoR

          • SoonerfanTU says:

What makes you think they’d go away? Say OU, ut, and KU leave for the Big 10. Wouldn’t the Big 12 just expand with the teams we’ve all mentioned and keep trucking along? To think they are just going to go away, I think, isn’t an accurate reality.

          • Birddawg says:

Conference would have zero clout without OU/UT.
If you get the momentum going.. OU .. KU(BIG).. WVU(ACC).. are readily and willing to go.
Shorthorn ego won’t want to be in dead conference and they jump ship right after either going independent/pac..tech/tcu followUT(indep/pac)
Baylor is crashing and burning.. their inventory is worth crap and they can’t go in front of the media and talk about keeping a conf together without getting questions about their situation.. no one will take them serious.
That leaves KST, ISU, OSU .. those three schools don’t have the influence to pull 7 teams without backlash into a crap conference.
            Conf Dead.. GoR dead..
            Everyone goes their merry way.

          • Bob Edwards says:

You are going to need eight schools to vote in order to disband the league. So the only way that happens is if you find landing places for all of them.

          • Birddawg says:

            Officially 8.. politically 5-6

          • Golfluvr13 says:

True, but I still don’t see 5 schools voting to lose money. Because, let’s face it, most of the schools in the Big 12 would lose money going somewhere else. I mean, who really wants to take KU, ISU, TT, Baylor, or K-State as a football draw to their conference?

          • Birddawg says:

Bob has said the GOR is serious and binding.
Therefore it wont be a vote to disband the conference..
It would be 5-7 schools notifying the other members of dismissal.
Arbitration, mediation, law suits… who knows..Since there is no termination clause. Could settle..
            OU/UT make this a power 5 conference..
IF those two leave with friends even though it may not be the officially 8..
How does a Baylor, IST, KST, recruit 5-7 schools to join .. it wont be a power 5 anymore.. After that, heck Houston may not even join it.
I don’t see Baylor having enough influence not what they are going through.
            IST/KST…….. nah
If that many teams left the others would settle for a $$ and let it die.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Yep, we are pretty much screwed until 2026. UT isn’t leaving because they may lose their LHN.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

I dunno. USC and Stanford (and sometimes UCLA) carried the Pac 10 for a long time before Oregon became legit. I think Memphis would grow stronger quickly in the BIg 12, and would poach into sec recruiting territory.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Memphis? Memphis? You’re talking about Memphis?

          • Walter Sobcek says:

Yeah, Memphis. Home to Elvis, BB King and some fine BBQ. It’s a program on the rise, and will be an excellent road trip game for the fans.

    • LottsSocks says:

Memphis brings FedEx and little else. It will be shown as the dog it really is this year without Fuenta and Lynch. The Liberty Bowl is crap, that is if you can make it past the protestors on the river bridge.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

BIG leads in revenue. I see your points, but you know that media buzz drives CFB in many ways. Sorry, but Cincy, Memphis, Uconn and UCF don’t excite anyone. Right now, only BYU and Houston can be said to be beneficial. But how much?

My worry about Houston is that they may have only caught lightning in a bottle with the QB and coach and as soon as the QB graduates they’ll be non-competitive. Long term vision is needed and the Big 12 leaders do not have it.

I am with others who’d rather switch than fight! I want the recruiting buzz that the SEC will give OU. Imagine having a top 5 recruiting class every year? Not just 2017? BIG would be nice too, but not as nice as the SEC.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

So assume all P5 teams are off limits in terms of expansion. That only leaves the schools we have been discussing. It’s expand with them, or don’t expand. I suppose I can understand not expanding, but it isn’t hurting anything to expand. We aren’t going to lose money. We aren’t going to block any P5 teams from coming on board later, b/c they are all tied up for long periods of time. Expanding also won’t keep OU from leaving down the road if it makes sense.

I just don’t get the hate. The Big 10 recently added Maryland and Rutgers. Were those schools exciting? Beneficial? Not really. Let’s not forget that schools like Cincy and Memphis have had periods of time where they have been pretty darn good at football and bball. I believe both have played in BCS games in the past. UCONN has too. Not sure about BYU, but I doubt anybody is questioning their football program. This list of schools is as good as anybody that has switched conferences outside of aTm and Nebraska. And yes, that includes Mizzou and Colorado.

P.S. – We wouldn’t have a top 5 class every year. That is ridiculous.

Yes! Get Griffin to OKC! That’s where the big man should have started off but for an unlucky draw.

Late to the NEWS – good stuff, Jordan – thanks. 12-2 Expansion = hahahahahahahaha!

  • "1056" says:

How about UCF and USF, I believe that they will eventually, if not right away, have affect on the recruiting for Florida, Florida st.,Miami, Alabama, and Georgia? I would also chose Memphis, and Cincinnati. I would not chose Houston, because they would affect our recruiting. There was a report that Houston is in talks with the Pac 12, but the Pac 12 dosen’t want them.

    • cush creekmont says:

He cannot because Bailer legal says “don’t say ‘nuthin’ bub, we don’ wan’ nooooooo lawsuit ammo for the otha’ side. Jus’ say yessir, we gonna’ play and no sir, don’ know ’bout that.”

  • Walter Sobcek says:

We all love watching Baker the Playmaker do his thing when he takes off with the ball, but I really hope his first instinct this season to look for his outet in the flats. Would rather see Perine and Mixon catching passes and delivering the hits than BM receiving them.
