FOOTBALL (FREE)

As if we needed any more evidence the Big 12 is a dead man walking.

Wait, what? Bob Bowlsby and a lack of understanding? I don’t believe I’ve ever heard those two things in the same sentence before…

I don’t expect tOSU will be hurting for talent, especially at RB, but this was a potential starter, fwiw.

smh.

Huh?

OTHER

I guess this shouldn’t be that big of a surprise after OU picked up that pitcher from Mizzou late last week. Best of luck to Chestnut at UCO.

Major bummer.

Not exactly the creature you expect to emerge from the sea.

Check out the hit off the kickoff just after the 3:30 mark… hot dang.

Another thought from this: I’ll be the first to admit that I had forgotten that Durron Neal wasn’t always number 5

  • Bob Edwards says:

How does the Bailer scandal go on for months and the head of the conference come unprepared to answer the questions on media days? Did he think the media was going to ask him, “Where did you get your tie?”

    • cush creekmont says:

His wife bought him the tie – she forgot to prep him about the Bailer scum.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Was there paper work on the tie or was he only informed verbally that she bought it?

      • Oscar says:

Later that day, Bowlsby was seen in a evening gown waving at cars on I35 and chasing pigeons.

    • ouwooferman says:

Ignore it and it will go away?

      • Bob Edwards says:

If that is the intent, then you talk to the PR people and get them to put together a message that says you care and we are diligently pursuing more information. Not a message that say you don’t even know what the scandal is about.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Surprised you expected more from this clown outfit.

      • Bob Edwards says:

I don’t expect them to do anything, since none of this involves conference rules. The only thing they could do is kick them out of the conference. Still, the B-12 has to have a PR department since that is basically all they do. You would think they could have actually prepped him for the questions. The message that he sent is “I don’t care enough to really even think about the issue.”

        • Sooner Ray says:

It wasn’t a shocker to me because I’ve seen how proactive they have been on other issues.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I am not shocked. But they need to be called out. It’s like watching the Three Stooges only it is real.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Don’t insult the Stooges that way, I actually liked watching that show. 🙂

          • Bob Edwards says:

Well when it’s done as comedy it’s great when it’s done as the head of a P5 conference not so much.

    • Birddawg says:

      No kidding.
      Wow… these quotes are baad.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Probably expected hours of, when are you going to add UCF and Memphis. Those juggernauts will put the B12 on an even keel with the B1G and SEC

    • ND52 says:

It almost goes without saying that when you combine alcohol and drugs and raging hormones and the experience of 18- to 22-year-olds, it’s probably unrealistic to think that these kinds of things are never going to happen.

—–Bob Bowlsby from Big XII media day

There is not a single quote out there that better signifies the dire straights that this conference currently finds itself in.

      • jimintexas says:

When you take the context of rape, this is a pretty disgusting statement.

        • ND52 says:

I’d say disconcerting rather than disgusting as it’s becoming more and more obvious that Bowlsby is simply clueless. He’s the idiot nephew who got his job simply because his uncle is so high up in the organization.

          • jimintexas says:

He basically said when you combine alcohol and drugs and raging hormones and the experience of 18-22 year olds, rape happens. I guess you can look at that as disconcerting.

          • ND52 says:

Some people like Bowlby are just plain incompetent, i.e. low I.Q. and/or poor social awareness.

I don’t blame the person per se but rather the twin evils called nepotism and cronyism @disqus_rnIgGq1MSy:disqus

          • Bob Edwards says:

I would agree. What he says is essentially true, you probably won’t ever end it completely. But that doesn’t mean that, as an organization, you can’t do everything you can to discourage it. You certainly don’t allow a member of your organization to promote it through their actions. If I knew I couldn’t cure cancer, but I could only cure 75% of the cancers that occur that is still worth doing.
It shows a complete lack of understanding of the issue. The issue is what can the B12 do to help reduce this problem among its member organizations, not can rape be eliminated worldwide.

          • jimintexas says:

I agree. It is like he has a severe infection of Old White Man’s disease and is out of touch. True, it happens. But, you recongize it is a problem and you do everything you can to address the problem, even if you can’t eradicate the problem. Those you protect are worth it, even it is only a few.

          • paganpink says:

Since his race is irrelevant that is a racist statement.

        • Indy_sooner says:

Logged in just to upvote, I am ashamed that we are associated with this bumbling idiot. This is almost has the same tone as the “it was a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action” comment made by that Stanford kid’s dad after he raped a co-ed

      • Jed says:

Y’know? I’m 55 years old and it utterly stumps me that anyone born after my father still fails to get that sexual assault is a line you just don’t cross. “Drunk and Horny and Stupid” is no longer an excuse. It was never a good one and it’s been obviously insufficient for about the last fourty years.

        • ND52 says:

I just wonder how prevalent sexual assault was back in those days compared to now. Meaning that was it so rare at that time as to be doubted more by the older generations still alive today?

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

It was probably worse back then. I mean he’ll, women weren’t hardly considered anything back then. Considering everyone walks around with a video camera now I’m actually shocked more videos/ incidents aren’t exposed. Sexual assault will never go away.

          • ND52 says:

            I was speaking of the 1950’s—-not the 1450’s 😀

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I know! Lol I knew my choice of words was going to get a comment like such 🙂

          • Jed says:

According to the last I saw of stats, about the same overall. Somewhat higher rates for lower economic class women as they were without protection from law or police and many more worked in domestic positions. Upper class was seemingly almost solely abuse within marriage bonds.
That given, something on the order of 40% of women suffered rape then as now. Most societal stats show remarkable stability over time.

          • ND52 says:

            40%? No offense @disqus_PxbbojuSbh:disqus but I don’t believe that for a second.

          • Jed says:

Well, I’ll admit that the number is startling and depends on an inclusive definition that includes intoxication incapacity and reported lack of consent both of which could be debated and both of which might skew the number high.
All that said, the 40% for lifetime experience is pretty well accepted among social scientists on that ‘beat’ these days.

          • ND52 says:

Not to get super political on this @disqus_PxbbojuSbh:disqus but I’ve been around for 4+ decades and that is feminist propaganda if I’ve ever heard it.

Getting drunk and having sex with someone you wouldn’t have slept with while sober is not sexual assault.

          • Jed says:

You can buy it or not. Your choice. There are lots of numbers that cause discomfort. (homosexuality, illegitimacy, etc).
In this case, they are somewhat off point.
Whatever number you accept, it would seem that there has not been any particular shift in prevalence of sexual assault over the years.

          • ND52 says:

            @disqus_PxbbojuSbh:disqus

40% of the women in this country have not been sexualy assaulted, we do not live in a “patriarchy” and there is no such thing as “rape culture”.

40% puts this country on the same level with countries such as Afghanistan—–Afghanistan.

Do you realy believe that America is that dangerous for women???

          • Brent says:

Do you mean 40% have been sexually assaulted?

          • paganpink says:

Absolute nonsense number that NO one can prove, and that requires a large degree of contortions as to what rape means to most people- “unwanted attention” would be at the top of the list. Sociology is not now- nor will it ever be- a “hard” science.

          • Jed says:

And, again, we go off course to argue numbers. In the aftermath of yesterdays skepticism, I looked through some unaudited numbers and got rates from 13% up to 45% with most, if not all, sources commeting that undereporting could drive the number higher. In the case of the low estimates, the figure of 2~3X was cited as ‘supportable’ ranges.
And everyone covered themselves by pointing out that the definition was key.
Let’s not lose oursselves in the weeds. You want a lower number, go with it. I would stop out and wonder why it raises such wrath, however. Why does a stat upset you so? We’re not talking the melting point of 440 HP Stainless Steel here. The definition is everything.
All that taken as read, the original point I attempted to make stands: you have to have been born before the flood (and to have taken on the predominant bias of older, intentionally blind, days) to have the attitude that sexual violence is either inevitable or rare.

I’ll also go ahead and stick my head in the noose: I see no evidence that the incidence of sexual violence has increased much over the past 50 or 100 or 200 years. There does not appear to be any correlation between sexual violence and ‘modern permissiveness’ or any other ‘liberal’ ill.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I say it is symptomatic of his freaking leadership. Let’s get off this Titanic.

  • Birddawg says:

Bowlsby’s incompetence yesterday actually helps OU’s chances of leaving this sh** conference.

    • Jordan Esco says:

How? It’s not like we, or OU, , or anyone really were unaware of his incompetence prior to yesterday.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Yep. It’s not like his incompetence let’s us out of the grant of rights.

      • Birddawg says:

If it gets ugly with law suits,
Just more material and content to throw into peoples faces.

What he should have said is they haven’t been forthcoming with the Pepper Hamilton report. Legally they don’t have to. But the conference will act accordingly to preserve the integrity of all schools in the conference.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

No, it’s not very fun. But that’s life and it goes in cycles, I’m just waiting for the good cycle to hit us. LOL
Having a good marriage sure makes life easier! I can take all these problems at work with a grain of salt knowing I have a great marriage and that when I get home my wife will let me rant and rave and then she will come up with something funny to say to take my mind off of it.

I won’t forget it either. It had been a long time since OU was where they were supposed to be and my wife said during that game that she thought our neighbors were going to call the cops because I was yelling so much. LOL

          • OUhomer4life says:

I’m glad I had room between me and my neighbors

Good stuff, Golf! Glad to see you “jump in” and not just lurk. 🙂

    • Wood says:

something to say to the recruits, do you have the OUDNA to have your name mentioned with these?

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

If I am Cooks I say good luck to Bandy and go after somebody else. Seems like a battle not worth fighting at this point, could use his time on some other great prospects.

    • Boom says:

Hawk, I’m with you. I like Bandy but I trust Cooks too. I’m sure Cooks has his depth chart he’s been on from over a year ago. I’m interested in who he pursues.

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

I’m eager to see what Brandon and K come up with for his replacement, I know they have mentioned Boyce previously. I’m not sure how far up the list he is for Cooks though and how interested he would be in flipping from Texas.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I think if we land Okudah then it’s a total success. We’ll have 4 DB’s in this class with 3 four stars and a 5 star. Plus throw in Cobb and you’re good.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

I think they would want another corner to replace Bandy, I’m sure the TFB guys will have something on it soon.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I’m sure they would, but it wouldn’t shock me at all if they concluded with a top 10 player like Okudah lol. We seem to ALWAYS land a 4 star or two that none of us were talking about on signing day. Let’s just have a successful year on the field and everything will take care of itself!

          • Scott says:

Dont forget 5 star D’Angelo Gibbs. OU needs another safety in this class and now we have a open CB spot. Okudah has had reserved spot since day 1 but Gibbs didnt. With this recent decommit i expect Coach Cooks to be recruiting Gibbs even harder now.

    • Oscar says:

Anything can happen once he takes an “official” to Norman.

    • SoonerMagic76 says:

Great to hear – both well deserved

    • Matt says:

yes thats great! Gotta keep those two around as long as possible! I have also been wondering if Gundy could take over as O-Coordinator after Riley leaves. Cale seems like a lifer so that would be great to get someone who can run a great offense and not leave after a couple years.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I’ve got Riley staying with us at least another 3-4 seasons. The dude still has so much to learn on the offensive side of the ball let alone the defensive side. Sure he can go and be like Kliff and land a decent job but he’ll have no coach to coach the defense. I just think long time defensive coordinators make better head coaches. They can then delegate the offense to an offensive guru and have a successful program. Usually offensive coaches fizzle out IMO

        • Matt says:

I think it used to be that way but I think more offensive guys are having success. Dabo, Tom Herman, Urban Meyer, Harbaugh, Jimbo are all offensive guys who are killing it.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

      Great news

    • Bob Edwards says:

I have to chuckle at this. Six of nine assistant coaches now have a title including “coordinator or director.”

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Does a change in position held make it easier to pay them more or can schools offer pay increases without really adjusting the coaches status? I mean with the head coach obviously you can’t change his status but it does make me laugh.

        • Bob Edwards says:

They can pay them whatever they want and give them whatever title they want it really doesn’t matter. Part of it is to justify writing them bigger checks. The other part is to make it look like they have more responsibility. It looks good from a career standpoint whether it means anything or not. Title really means nothing. Salary, authority and responsibility are the only things that really mean anything.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Makes sense. I just didn’t know if a title change was required to pay them more. Thanks Bob.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I think the only title that is fixed is “Head Coach” and that is because it is a NCAA category. The HC then divides up the roles and responsibilities and gives them titles based on that. But if you have ever worked in an organization of any size you know titles don’t always match the reality.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I work for my father and uncle so I’ve never had the corporate experience other than when I interned over the summers at a few other financial firms. But you’re totally right about titles. We have a few employees who take their title out of context and others who don’t live up to theirs. To each his own I guess.

          • Boom says:

Also, it helps if Stoops is promoting them for other coaching positions. I hope they stay for a long time but quality coaches usually want to be head coaches.

      • Oscar says:

Plus! they get a plaque to hang on their wall! 🙂

  • SoonerinLondon says:

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Big 12 – Live Media Day Bill Hancock http://newsok.com/multimedia/videos?live=Daynd10jsWk

  • Boom says:

The sad part about Bowlsby is he could get away with these answers if he were in charge of SEC/ACC. ESPN would minimize his air time. However, with his dunce hat sitting firmly on his head, this will get aired over and over. Living in Houston, the SEC is talked about more than Big 12 and with Bowlsby interviews, they will just laugh that much harder at us. We have a proud program that is just being a whipping boy for the conference we are in.
Could you imagine our image and PR if we were in another power conference?

    • Bob Edwards says:

Actually, here in SEC country Mullen has gotten quite a bit of flack for his similar answers to their scandal.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Well he’s a dumbass so rightfully so. He learned under urban how to handle players so it doesn’t surprise me at all.

      • Boom says:

As he should but has the national media said much about this decision since the SEC media days? Curious as I haven’t had time to watch any TV. Thanks

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I get dizzy when I listen to him lol. Circular reasoning at its finest lol

    • SoonerfanTU says:

A whipping boy that had an amazingly dominant sports year with multiple NC’s and deep postseason runs (bball) and a CFP appearance.

This comment isn’t meant for the future, but right now, OU isn’t dealing with as much of a disadvantage to other conferences as some of our fans make it seem. And the one conference they all point to, the SEC, we are unlikely to join.

      • Boom says:

Never did I say OU wasn’t dominant this year much less discuss conference options. My point was the lack of Big 12 leadership and how this will be viewed.

      • jimintexas says:

Winning all of that in another conference, may have been pushed a lot more on-air. Not saying OU is at a disadvantage. I am just saying OU is not getting their money’s worth from the B12-2

    • Jordan Esco says:

      We think alike 😉

  • Tinycop says:

    Houston to PAC12. Get ready.

For the BIG12 to remain viable they have to add more schools. Most ideal (in my opinion they have to be) would be some big name schools. Unfortunately, they are all in conferences they don’t want to or can’t afford to leave.

When they BIG12 realize they have to add teams, the second options of Houston, BYU, and schools that were being considered will be scooped up.

This would allow the other conferences to begin to raid the folding BIG12 to improve their conferences.

At least, that’s what I would do. Especially if I were running the PAC12, BIG10 or ACC.

    • Oscar says:

It’s a ploy by Houston to get the Big12 to jump. Pac does not want Houston.

      • ouwooferman says:

        truth

      • cush creekmont says:

The PAC didn’t want Okie Aggie or Sand Aggie, why would they want Houston community college?

Let the 12-2 have Houston and SMU and North Texas State – and let OU GO!

        • ouwooferman says:

Hcc. they have moved up from Cougar High. LMAO

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Be nice Cush! My baby sis goes to UH! Lol. I’m still salty she didn’t go to OU. Unfortunately she followed some loser dude to UH and now she hates it there since they are broken up lol

      • Tinycop says:

I agree Houston wants in. I was just saying that would be a logical first step by other P5 conferences.

I am ok with adding like BYU or even Boisie State. Maybe even Memphis because the TV footprint. But not so much with Houston as B12 is already in that market.

It’s all a moot point I think as I believe the ship is going down and all that will save the SSB12 is adding established P5 schools.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Boise is a non starter for the B12. They are basically a JC with a D-1 football program. The others have potential, if you just have to add someone.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

PAC cannot be choosy. They don’t have many options. If they aren’t going to land some big package from the Big 12, a school like Houston would probably be Plan B.

I really like Houston’s potential. They just aren’t a good fit in the already Texas-heavy Big 12.

      • blaster1371 says:

Correct and I’m not sure they ant to expand at all. I read somewhere that it’s commissioner said the PAC 12 could be screwed out of getting into the playoff most years because their conference champion could very well have two losses. He was saying that based on the idea that in the PAC 12 any team is capable of beating the others on any given Saturday.

      • Farmer Glickstein says:

Nice one! I not for adding any more Texas schools to the Big XII, however swapping out Baylor for Houston might be acceptable.

  • Boom says:

ACC As part of the agreement, the ACC is also going to be partnered with ESPN for quite some time. The conference extended its grant of rights with ESPN through the 2035-36 season. Via ESPN:
The conference’s grant of rights makes it untenable financially for a school to leave, guaranteeing in the 20 years of the deal that a school’s media rights, including revenue, for all home games would remain with the ACC regardless of the school’s affiliation.

So much for the thought of merging the best from Big 12 & ACC.

If OU is to lose 1 regular season game next season, which game would you prefer it be?

    • Boom says:

      an early one.

    • Jofield says:

I would rather just have a total upset against a mid-pack team than to lose a big game. Iowa State, K-State… something like that. They get their time in the sun for beating us and then we go win a natty!

    • J.r. Kamm says:

What kinda’ question is that? It’s like if you had to lose one of your fingers, which would you choose? 🙂

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

      Season opener, baseball.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I was just thinking…..better to lose early, but I REALLY don’t want to lose to Houston, Ohio State, or Texas. Maybe TCU? I worry that a loss to WVU or TT would be so late in the season that it might hurt our Playoff chances. Maybe TT wouldn’t, especially if we lost some kind of shoot-out.

I don’t know, just an interesting question to me, given that it’s very likely we won’t go undefeated. That is simply tough to do.

      • Jofield says:

I agree on paper is seems that a lose to tOSU would not be all that damaging if we won out but… there is no way I want to listen to some garbage about how we are not Big Ten/SEC level or something.

        • Jofield says:

Plus we need that game for recruiting.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

I just remember how sad I was after losing that ND home game. I don’t want to feel that way after the Ohio State game. BIG game for a lot of reasons. Starting to think the TCU game might be the best to lose.

    • ouwooferman says:

If we want to go to the playoffs and there are not any other one loss teams in slots 1-3, then it would need to be early, one of first 4 games.

  • Jofield says:

I know this is yesterday’s news but if Bobby Evans really is emerging then I am really excited about that. I would love having Samia inside and a more athletic Evans outside!

  • DCinAZ says:

ESPN is going down the sh*tter. Conference network deals aren’t going to rescue them, and honestly, I don’t think conference networks are going to survive cable unbundling anyway.

LOL! Bob Stoops says he doesn’t want to say he doesn’t care, but he doesn’t care what divisions the Big 12 sets up.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

      and….the Joe Mixon question.

      • R@z0rb says:

That didn’t take long. Bob handled it well. I think that if they would just let Joe address it the media would move forward. Unfortunately once litigators get involved that isn’t going to happen. It is sad that unfortunate situations like these are what seem to get the most clicks/media attention.

        • Drew says:

I completely disagree. No matter how it is addressed, the media would bring it up until Mixon had graduated.

        • jimintexas says:

There is nothing Joe could do for this to die. It never works that way. He just needs to do what he is doing.

If you’re interested, new post just went up that includes Stoops’ full presser: https://thefootballbrainiacs.com/ou-oklahoma-sooners-football-bob-stoops-big-12-media-days

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Does it include the two times Bob was asked about possibly playing the shorthorns twice? UGH!

  • UGA Sooner says:

I know it’s click bait, but the media looks ridiculous asking questions about Mixon, IMO. I’ve never struck a lady in my life and don’t plan on it, but he got punished. Miss St isn’t punishing their player who hit a woman multiple times (a one game suspension against South Alabama is not a punishment), but people still can’t drop the Mixon crap. It’s such a recycled story, too. It amazes me what is considered click bait, nowadays.

    • ND52 says:

It’d be one thing if the Mixon video was out there for everyone to see and—-and—–he’d never been punished or prosecuted for it. But both things did happen and there is no video for us to go off of.

  • SoonerinLondon says:

Tom Luginbill picks Texsa to win Big XII. At least he has OU second.

    • Dick Bump says:

That generates more interest than picking OU like most others..

      • SoonerinLondon says:

Yep. Of course, he has history behind him. When we’re picked top 5 we’ve tended to finish top 20.

    • CrimsonGhost says:

We really have to be able to run the ball against them this year and win this game. I really can’t stand the thought of losing to them two years in a row.

      • soonerborn says:

Think OU will do better this year in the game. Second season with Riley, better oline in my opinion (St. John not giving away pass run) and I think the D will be better. CK and MJ and the Evans boys at ILB I think will do great.

        • CrimsonGhost says:

Yep, I hope so. Stopping their run game will be as important as establishing ours.

    • KJ1123 says:

Luginbill is a dunce. He loves the SEC as much as FineBUM.

      • Boom says:

You should have seen him at the opening. Fawning over the kids who committed to the SEC. He didn’t cover hardly anyone from any other conference. Tool.

        • KJ1123 says:

Yeah I saw him one year up there drooling over Daylon Mack and Khalil Mckenzie, etc…. Tool is definitely 100% accurate.

          • Boom says:

Everyone walking around is so nice and enjoying the show. Luginbill struts around and always gets in front of the parents to have his huddles with his staff and camera guys. If the attention goes to one side of the field, he’s right on que. It’s like, look at me.

          • KJ1123 says:

It totally is, then last year I saw him calling one of the college games I believe and I remember thinking “are you kidding me?”.

          • Boom says:

No Doubt. I saw that too and shook my head. Sad day to see him on the sideline.

      • KJ1123 says:

Miami needs him more than we do, Im sure thats front and center in their pitch to him.

        • 47 Straight OU Know says:

I just hope it is not shying away from competition for a spot. And yes he would pretty much be guaranteed a spot at the U.

          • DCinAZ says:

Yet he would be playing in a pathetic environment.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

          • Boom says:

Richt knows how to recruit and is pulling in the old Miami players to get involved so there’s more to this. Can’t blame him and maybe they will get it together again. Bandy would be a centerpiece in the secondary.

    • DCinAZ says:

What an exciting venue to play in for your college career as a young athlete.

  • KJ1123 says:

Need to just fold this conference already and move. Power 4 makes more sense for a playoff system obviously. Tired of hearing these dumb B12 proposals.
