FOOTBALL (FREE)

Preseason magazines like things that they think will sell preseason magazines. Always have, always will.

Maybe I shouldn’t be, but I’m kind of surprised OU made the list here.

I thought this was more than fair from an OU fan’s perspective. Curious your thoughts though given some of what was implied in the post re: how OU fans might react.

    BOOMER!!!!!!!!!!!! Texsa sucks

  • metzker says:

Dam what a packed daily !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • DR LEO MARVIN says:

It was we are picked to make the playoff again in three out of four magazines.

      • metzker says:

Cobb an impact freshman, interesting.Kendall,i hope not as i am captain obvious on that one!!!!!!!!

  • metzker says:

Well at least we came in at 10 in dbu.Lsu #1 in a no pass league that fits.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Only 52 DTG Good morning Sooners

  • UGA Sooner says:

As a Rams fan, I don’t see how the China game even thought of. I understand wanting a global market, but China?

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Espn article puts Austin Kendall in the “most intriguing freshman” list for OU. I know they mention something similar, but let’s hope to God that by the end of the season we can’t even remember most of his playing time. Nothing personal to him, but it’ll mean significant time without Mayfield.

    • CW says:

I wanna see him get some time under his belt, but only after we hang half a hundred on them.

      • metzker says:

        Pumping the sun CW,Good job!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Stephen Dale says:

I’m with you……Kendall or whomever is #2 needs game time as conditions allow and as much as possible……hopefully OU will have several of those games allowing the #2 guy plenty of time……..

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

I’m gonna have to throw Lampkin in there since technically he will be a redshirt freshman and Gallimore as well if he redshirted last year too.

      • Mark_in_VA says:

Right there with you on Lampkin. If I recall, there was talk last fall about how if he didn’t have to sit out the year he would have been on the field as a true frosh. Now it’s all quiet on him.

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

I agree that Lampkin should be the defensive breakout player of the year, alongside Kelly.

  • BoomCity89 says:

52 DTG!! 2 years in a row putting up 52 vs Tulsa… BOOM!!

    https://youtu.be/IPN_7Y6AZXA

    • SoonerMagic76 says:

I remember being so darn pissed at the end of the first half. Blowing that 3 touchdown lead to a 1 touchdown lead in 20 seconds.

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Jordan, as for Ian Boyd’s All Big 12, I think it’s mostly fair. He mentions that not picking Jordan Evans may be not correct in the long run. And I think he’s right on that – Evans should probably be on there.

As for Mahomes over Mayfield… just can’t see it. A lot of people are high on Mahomes, and I think he’s pretty darn good. But I’ll take Mayfield any day. Even if Mahomes finishes with more yards and passing TDs, he doesn’t have 2 of the conferences top running backs behind him.

    • metzker says:

      76!!!!

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I think the All Big 12 list is fair enough. But I really have trouble seeing TCU finishing first in the league with a new QB to break in. I mean, really?

      • SoonerMagic76 says:

100% agree. People are high on TCU this year. I will try to be unbiased and give two things to support them being somewhat high

        1) Baylor is not projected as high now that…. the dumpster fire is really flaming
        2) right or wrong, it is perceived nation-wide that TCU has OU’s number. OU has won 3 of the last 4 (4 games total since TCU joined the Big 12), but they have all been close.

With both of those points thrown out there… I still don’t see them finishing first

        • Birddawg says:

Loaded first 5 games at beginning of season..
UH … road game against top 15
tOSU… urban meyer w/ unproven 5 stars all over
TCU.. 2nd best team in big 12
Texsa.. who we have been favored the last 4-5 years and haven’t covered the spread.. say what you want.. Texsa always plays their best game against us.

          • SoonerMagic76 says:

Oh I definitely agree, it’s a tough stretch. I was just throwing out I don’t know that I believe TCU is going to win the Big 12.

          • Birddawg says:

            I don’t see it either..
Our offense is balanced and can score 40 on anyone on our schedule.
Our Defense wont give up 40 pts all year.
            That’s at least 10 wins..

          • Stephen Dale says:

I don’t either…………..the surprise team should be / will be TEXAS—if any of the UT QB’s develop some consistency…..the Horns feel like they have one victory assured—the RRS….what they will need is more attention to OSU / ISU, etc etc————teams that have beaten them consistently the past few seasons………..

          • Stephen Dale says:

OU could lose every game you have listed above……I think tOSU and Texas will beat OU —not sure about TCU, and like OU over Houston because of better talent….

      • Krys Allen says:

I could see it just because of their Defense. Last year they were down like 22 starters and still managed to shut down most teams. I really don’t know how Gary Patterson does it.. just imagine if he was working with 5* talent.

The new QB would definitely be a concern, but look isn’t it the A&M transfer who actually has some playing time under his belt similar to how Mayfield was at the start of last year? That + Cumbie might be pretty dangerous.

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

Patterson’s defenses are always special, and they do very well against us. But, with a young QB at the helm he will be prone to defensive alignment confusion. Mike Stoops will dial up the heat all day on the young man. So, if TCU beats us I say it will be a defensive struggle game that comes down to the wire.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Last year, they didn’t do very well. It is 30-14 in the 3rd quarter and we had a Qb in who couldn’t complete a swing pass in that game. 3 and outs will wear down the D. With Baker in I say we would’ve had 40-50 on that defense.

          • Dick Bump says:

Yep. We just kind of fizzled on offense at the end. The game shouldn’t have been close at all.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

My girl fell asleep when we went up 30-10 or whatever then when they were coming back I was completely silent up until Parker knocked the pass down. I flew out of my seat and went ballistic lol.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yeah, those 3 and outs really hurt us and let them regain momentum.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Remember? It was pathetic on offense.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I agree as well. Mixon also dropped a TD pass right before the first half ended. If Baker was healthy we woulda rolled them. Sometimes I feel like our route combinations just take too long to develop. I hope that’s corrected this year with better line play and just better plays lol.

          • Krys Allen says:

They were also without their starting QB, center, #1 WR and lots of defensive starters. Lots of turnovers by TCU in that first half allowed us that 30-14 lead.

          • Spitting Bull says:

That young QB was one knocked down throw away from beating us.

        • Stephen Dale says:

just imagine what Patterson could do with OU’s talent……

      • Dick Bump says:

It’s a bit of “what have you done for me lately”. A limping TCU played well in their bowl game against an over-hyped Oregon team. I don’t see it either, but I am concerned about the timing of the OU game. As for I Boyd, meh.

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

Wasn’t Oregon devastated with injuries last season also? I think Patterson’s defensive system along with his eye for picking talent goes a long way in their success.

          • Dick Bump says:

It seems like Oregon did have an injury to their quarterback that let TCU back in it (kind of like the OU game). Patterson does a good job with what he has.

    • Bart Young says:

I guess it was fair in that it wasn’t loaded with OU players at every position, but some of the omissions made me think it was more of a ‘bend over backward to not look like an OU homer’ type of list.

    • Dick Bump says:

I don’t think Jordan Evans is getting enough love. He was really playing well when he was healthy. I look for him to have a big year.

    • Birddawg says:

Mayfield is going to NYC to collect hardware after this season..

  • LottsSocks says:

Check out these articles coinciding with media days about Sumlin’s precarious position this year:

    • Sooner Ray says:

The aggie mindset is not logical.

      • ouwooferman says:

Delusional only starts to describe this condition. And this is not a new occurrence.

    • Dick Bump says:

Interesting storyline. Trevor really stands out in the “look at me!” SEC. Classy guy. I’ll be rooting for him all year, as much as it pains me to root for A&M.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

I know. I keep getting his tweets decked out in Aggie logos. Ugh, that is hard to get used to. But I root for him to succeed as a person.

      • Birddawg says:

I root for Trevor.. stays healthy, good stats, gets picked in draft..
But, A&M can crash and burn.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

    Did Gallimore redshirt last year?

    • UGA Sooner says:

Yes, if my memory is correct

      • Framoka says:

Yes, he’s a huge talent if he can get on the field. Lots of talented players ahead of him in the center of our dline.

        • UGA Sooner says:

I see no reason for him not to be the starter next year. If he puts it all together mentally, he’s going to be special. I read multiple articles last year stating he should’ve been a 5 star, but he hardly played his junior or senior year due to a leg injury or something. Hard to remember, but he was my favorite signee in 2015. He’s fast, too

      • Jordan Esco says:

        It is 🙂

  • LottsSocks says:

Oh, and glad to see TK9 getting some SEC hype. But I’m afraid for him he’s being set up to be the savior. One game doth not a career make.

so far , so good……we are all here talking about OU football……can’t be any better than that………..

  • SoonerfanTU says:

I think I’d lay a little down on OU at 9.5 wins. I think we lose at least one. Two is possible. I’d be pretty disappointed in a 3 loss regular season though.

    • ouwooferman says:

Two losses would be devastating to any playoff hopes.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I’ve already taken that bet. I just don’t see anyway we regress from last season. Sure we’ve got a more challenging schedule this year than last but still. Do they not realize Stoops averages more than 9.5 wins a year? Lol

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

It’s tough to win them all. I can see a 1-2 loss regular season.

      • Birddawg says:

If we get through the first 5 unscathed.. which game in the last 7 would you say could be a loss?

        • metzker says:

          FOOTBALL Dawg!!!!!!

        • SoonerfanTU says:

That is what makes college football so interesting. Who knows? We shouldn’t lose any of them, but a team like a KSU could bite us. Less likely b/c they are in Norman. But @TT and @WVU could be tough. It’s tough to be sharp every week. Also, no guarantee me make it out of the 1st five unbeaten. I think we’ll be favored in every game, but OU hasn’t had an undefeated regular season since Bob’s first one, right? It’s tough to do.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

This isn’t the TK/BB offense. I think Mayfield doesn’t allow the team to take a day off. After the Texas game when LR finally realized what to run on offense we took off.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

What does TK/BB have to do with anything? Even Bradford couldn’t lead OU to an undefeated regular season in 2008.

Those of you that are so sure there is no way OU will lose 2 games, should bet your life savings on OU over 9.5 wins then. Since you are so sure.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

Make that 2 undefeated regular seasons. 2003 as well.

          • Slim Sooner says:

It’s tough, but I BELIEVE this team can do it!! Win em all and leave no doubt.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

See, I completely disagree with you on WVU and K state. I think we roll them into the ground yet again. I have no fear of traveling to Morgantown. They replace their entire secondary and they’ve yet to stop our ground game since joining the big12. Plus skylar Howard throws 1 spiral a game lol. Only games I’m worried about are the Houston ( since it’s the first game )TCU, Ohio state and those damn shorthorns. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but that’s my thought. Taco tech will score on us but much like last time we traveled to Lubbock; we just ground and pound on them all day long.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

Mayfield said it in an interview yesterday that he wasn’t going to leave OU without a Natty. In Baker we trust!!!

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I never thought I could like a QB as much as Sammy B, but that boy Mayfield is right up there lol. If he wins a Heisman/ natty he’ll easily be my favorite Sooner QB lol. I would just love for a guy like that to win it all so he can give the entire world the middle finger lol.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I worry about every game. I’ve seen some incredibly talented Switzer teams lay an egg against very weak opponents. Anything can (and will) happen in a football game. But odds are tougher against Houston, tOSU, Whorns, and even TCU.

          • Birddawg says:

            2000 and 2004 (league)

      • metzker says:

        FOOTBALL 737!!!!!!!!!!

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

You think this is a 10-2 none playoff squad this year? O-line is better, backs will be better, No SHep…so…wr not better…I guess you are saying the defense will be weaker correct?

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Dude, it’s football. You never know what will happen. OU has had two undefeated regular seasons under Bob. It’s tough to do. Our schedule is pretty darn tough. If Baker misses any time at all, we’re playing a true freshman. We’ll have to have some new WR’s step up starting in game 1. If JT doesn’t keep clean, I wouldn’t like our CB combo at that point.

But basically, it’s football. There is almost zero chance we don’t lose at least 1 regular season game. Plenty of opportunities to lose a second. Didn’t say I’m predicting it. Didn’t say I’m hoping for it. Just saying it wouldn’t shock me. We won a lot of close games last year. Sometimes, we won’t win those.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Bob Stoops averages 2.8 losses per year. Betting we lose two is probably just about right.

    • Stephen Dale says:

OU’s season depends on Mayfield staying healthy for every game…Lose Baker and OU is in the hands of Kendall , Schafer, or either of the RS walkons from last season….the threat of injury to Mayfield factors into my prediction of 8-4 for OU this season……that and a disappointing defense and receiver corp…..

      • metzker says:

        ————

      • Jesse says:

See I actually think our receivers are going to surprise a lot of people this year. Mark Andrews, of course, I also think AD Miller will break out. Also Mykel Jones (true frosh) will make an impact. Throw in bax and deedee. I think we’ll be better than you think at WR.

8-4? you’re on record? This is the official prediction by Stephen dale?

        • Stephen Dale says:

yes, I am…………………………….the minor bowl game could go either way depending on the opponent and/or OU’s interest in the game.

          • Birddawg says:

I will give you until the night before the UH game just in case you change your mind.
I’m going to hold that prediction against you.

          • Stephen Dale says:

well, I certainly hope the Sooners go 12-0 but the team & coaches usually take a siesta twice a year ( Texas & ? ) , lose a game a year due to failing to take advantage of opportunities, and lose a game a season when facing a team with more talent : hence 8-4….

          • Stephen Dale says:

what will you say if I’m proven correct ?

          • Birddawg says:

That would prove you’re the antichrist and already know how the next 7 years plays out.

          • Stephen Dale says:

ha ! not that omniscient —just applying historical elements from OU’s past into predicting the 2016 season…..we’ll see soon enough….

          • Steve Harris says:

I predict that Stephen Dale is going to be pleasantly surprised.

          • Slim Sooner says:

Can’t associate him with pleasantly anything.

          • Steve Harris says:

Just got my tickets for the opener at NRG. I’m excited to see whether we’ll really have high quality replacements for Striker, Tapper, Sanchez and Trevor. (I expect Austin and Austin will come through).

But, like SD, I get anxious about a season when the punditocracy is predicting a final four season for the Sooners. They underestimated last year’s team (not to mention 2000) when we killed and overestimated us on other occasions, when we tanked. Superstitious? I s’pose.

          • Slim Sooner says:

I’m very superstitious also and I hope not ANYTHING like SD. Don’t believe he cares about anything except getting hits to his comments. I like being underestimated and underdog roll a lot, but think we are just too deep and too good. Call me Homer!!

          • Wood says:

I’m with you slim, we have been burned to many times being the favorite, I like being the underdog. If Mark Rodgers really likes us than that usually means a loss

          • Stephen Dale says:

I hope you are right and OU goes 12-0———————-but every season is fraught with injuries and OU will be mortally wounded if Mayfield goes down……….

          • Steve Harris says:

Wouldn’t predict 12-0, but 10-2 and beating the pronghorns and plowboys would be mighty nice.

      • SoonerFan92 says:

You never cease to amaze me…

        • Stephen Dale says:

keep posting……everyone is bemoaning the low response count from yesterday…….do you not agree about OU should Mayfield be lost to injury and the defense disappoint ?

          • SoonerFan92 says:

Defense, I dont think, will be a disappointment. If the starting QB for any team goes down, don’t you think it would be an unwanted situation for anyone?

          • Stephen Dale says:

            no question about it…………yes.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

And I’m sure that no one on this board would gripe about the lower numbers of comments if it meant it would keep your negativity behavior away.

          • Stephen Dale says:

apparently critiquing the team’s chances is the same as negativity in your opinion….too bad you feel that way…….

          • SoonerFan92 says:

I think everyone feels that way about you, when it comes to you negativity.

          • Stephen Dale says:

obviously you are following the crowd……….

      • Sooner Jay says:

That’s a down vote. SD why don’t you hang out in another forum. Your insight is ridiculous and uninformed. You always knock the Sooners. I understand being realistic, but bashing MY TEAM is another. If you ain’t got nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything at all. I know A LOT of us would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

      • Tulsa Terry says:

I share you’re concern about Mayfield in a grueling schedule but also have great faith in Kendall to shock the nation if need be

    • Slim Sooner says:

      Sooner! #8

      • Stephen Dale says:

I doubt it anytime soon……not enough elite talent or quality depth to challenge the tOSU’s, Alabama’s, Clemson’s, LSU’s , USC’s ….in fact, Texas should soon be the standard bearer for the league….if not this season, then starting in 2017…………

        • Coach JK says:

Sorry dude, but I have been around a long time and coached for 35 years. I watched the spring game and have every year. We have more quality depth than we have had since the early 2000’s. The only thing I agree with is Mayfield staying healthy.

    • Slim Sooner says:

      Sooner! #8

    • Stephen Dale says:

similar feeling to a belly full of gas along with the symptoms of IBS/ Crohn’s…….

  • Birddawg says:

TCU was decimated with injuries last season.
Patterson is one of the best coaches in the big12.
    Cumbie/Meachem are great OCs
But just because they return guys with D experience and they most likely wont have injury bug. Does not warrant them number 1 team in Big12.
They return only 1 olineman and a few WRs
Breaking in a new QB/RB and offensive line will have growing pains.
On D, Carraway was pretty good. Other than him, I don’t see anything but a classic well coached D.. that isn’t enough to stop a balanced attack from the sooners.
    OU wins this game

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

      🙂

    • Stephen Dale says:

much of TCU’s success will depend on the play of the atM transfer ( QB) that redshirted at TCU last season…..if he approaches the dependability of the graduated TCU QB, the Frogs will be a load for every opponent……….

      • CrimsonNative says:

Even their true freshman backup played really well in that game against us. I don’t see QB being as big of an issue as some might think.

        • Stephen Dale says:

you are probably right, which means bad news for Frog opponents…..I had forgotten about the Frog frosh QB…..

          • CrimsonNative says:

I think that game is going to be really tough. In years past, we could afford to be “vanilla” in the first part of the season, which gave us the ability to surprise our more challenging opponents in the latter part of the season. This year, we won’t have that luxury. We can’t come out and expect to be “vanilla” against tOSU or we’ll get our butts handed to us. With how intelligent Gary Patterson is with his defenses, he’ll have a good idea of how to defend LR’s offense by the time we meet up with them. Add in the fact that, we haven’t and won’t see much of Cumbie’s offense by then and we could be in for quite the football game.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I’d be a very happy camper if LR played to our strength and grounded and pounded the TCU D w/running game to soften them up and wear them out. The second half we can air it out on them when they are all gassed out.

          • Stephen Dale says:

I like your plan if the OU O-line can control the LOS>………

          • CrimsonNative says:

I’d be more than happy with that outcome.

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Wow, check this out. Best Big 12 road records against P5 opponents in the past 4 years. Hint: OU has the best record. By a lot.

My bold prediction of this incoming class of freshmen is that Parrish Cobb will transfer by the end of his second year. I am OK that we added him but definitely doesn’t seem like OU is at all his choice, but it is mom and dad’s choice. He obviously wanted to go to Baylor, then Texas and it seems like we just the only real D1 option in area left.

      Really!

    • CrimsonNative says:

If he hadn’t committed to us in the first place, I would be more likely to agree with you.

    • Stephen Dale says:

sorta depends on how much Cobb is used and how successful he is when in the games….the guy may step onto campus as the best return specialist on the team…I think he might be used as a receiver this fall since he has the ‘quicks’ to be a dynamic slot receiver….

I hear OP is up. At least, there was a tweet from Andrew King that it was up.

  • Tony B says:

I say Baker stays 2 years regardless and Perine and Mixon both stay if OU doesn’t win the Natty this year. I think if that happens next years team will be even better with all the young talent they have now. Not a fan of Dean but the Baker comments make it worth the watch.

OK, I have been a lurker for a long time, finally decided to post because this Is a great site. In June my wife and I were flying back from Houston, we had the row to ourselves and some friends of ours had the row next to us. She goes to the restroom and this big guy is walking down the isle and he looks at me as he’s standing next to me and say’s is that seat taken? He has a back pack on and I said as long as your name is Davonta it’s open and he looks at me like what the f… how do you now me, I saw Lampkin on the side of the back pack. My wife comes back and he is basically taking up two seats and she says thanks for giving up my seat and she sat with our friends and I told her I explain later lol. So I tried to talk to him with out wearing him out with a thousand questions. I did get a few in he said everything was going great and that he and Gallimore will get a lot of playing time this year and Dimon had lost weight like he needs to. P.S. Don’t grade me on my grammer

  • Boom says:

Ian Boyd, did he really say anything. This is my take. He pooled the best 4 – 8 players at each position and put some on the list and then did a CYA with the others. 10 year old could do this.
OK, so TCU is #1, that’s fine, who cares at this time of year. Thx, give us some more motivation.
Mahomes, I’m trying to figure out who got more hype, Mahomes or Oakman or the fat TE. Mahomes & O will have to score 60 a game to win.
Texas has the BEST talent. OK Ian. Seems like ole Mack always had the BEST talent too.

  • Nate Broadus says:

Big Game Shay is an apt nickname; she doesn’t play like a freshman. Time after time she made plays that even seniors don’t always make.

Patty has a hand cannon coming back next year–and more guns on the way. She’s building a monster at OU.

  • j l says:

    Mahomes over mayfield? lol.

Mahomes throws too many INT, and wont have a 1500 yard rusher like they did with washington last year to keep defenses honest.

Mahomes will have more yards than baker, but that will be the only statistical advantage he will have(and it will take him 200+ more passes thrown to get it).

  • leatherneck1061 says:

I agree that Ian Boyd’s write up is fair for the most part, and I have no problem with someone picking a team besides OU as their preseason favorite. But with TCU I honestly just don’t see it. They will be good I’m sure, but losing Boykin and Doctson among several others just seems like too much to overcome in that short of a time and still find a way to win the league. I’m open to counter arguments, but that just seems like a stretch IMO.

    • John Garner says:

Gary Patterson. Helluva coach. That alone won’t make it happen, but it almost did in Norman last season.

Personally I think our offensive line is going to be a beast and we’ll run the ball better than last season. My only concern is with the D-Line. Can we get push and pressure from players other than Charles Walker?
