FOOTBALL (FREE)

Iowa State? C’mon, man. @ Tech or even @ WVU (coming off Baylor) are much more logical “upset” picks, IMO.

BOOMER!! Jordan’s comment about Kruger kids as assistant coaches made me spit my coffee. Count is up to 3 coaches to replace now?

    • Jordan Esco says:

Well Crutchfield hasn’t left yet and is just one of several candidates for that job. So the count was at two prior to bringing in Kruger’s son. Still one (for now) asst. position to fill at the moment.

      • SamSooner says:

I think I’ll apply. I can coach basketball. I’m old school: fundamentals can be deadly.

      • AltoidSooner says:

Was thinking of Scott Thompson also, didnt he leave with Henson? His giggling commentary to go along with TRows play by play is irreplaceable.

    Good morning fellow Brainiacs!!!

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Wow that is a great article on the amount of money in college football, let alone how it has skyrocketed the past 5 years. It’s pretty obvious the players aren’t in the best interest of the NCAA.

  • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Gooooood Friday morning!!! “It is going to be a beautiful day to be a SOONER” The only thing that could make it better is if I was not working. Oh well lets all get out there and seize the day.

  • Dick Bump says:

Good article on Tapper. That guy can motor. I think he’ll have a good career as a pro, if he stays healthy.

  • Malicong says:

Two years ago, Pat Forde also picked Iowa St as a possible upset stating that “it is always a tough place to play”.
I kindly pointed out that OU hasn’t lost to Iowa St since 1991 and haven’t lost in Ames since 1960. It is one of the most lopsided regular matchups in college football.
It is about the dumbest upset alert someone could pick.

    • Slim Sooner says:

Seems like someone always has us on upset alert every game all season anyway. If not an upset coming, it’s a trap game. LOL.

    • j l says:

Not just one of, it is THE most lopsided matchup in all of CFB.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

ESPN doesn’t think Bob can get the team up for every game. True or false?

  • J.r. Kamm says:

How about that Cub’s no-no last night? Arrieta is unreal.

  • Rick says:

I think my computer must be infected, there was an article from the LHN on my screen. HELP!!!!

  • Framoka says:

Best OU Sooners Football Daily News ever! Thanks Jordan, great football articles. The Striker piece was excellent.

    • hOUligan says:

Seriously. Just one more thing TFB, and Jordan specifically, brings that none else has. Not even TFB texsa has a News Daily. All the great OU news in one place. Thanks you, Sir!!

  • RBear says:

Nice recap of Season 5 of GoT, I’ll have to watch it 37 times before I can catch it all though.

Who all is tuning in on Sunday?

    • rainydaze114 says:

I’m going to be a couple days behind… no spoilers please!

      • Drew says:

I can sympathize. I’m waiting for the book, imagine how I feel.

        • RBear says:

The book will prob be entirely different than what’s on HBO, gotta be a first where the show is actually ahead of the book(s).

          • Drew says:

I hope so. So much is already different (re: Jamie, Sansa, Brienne, Stannis, Tyrion, Barristan (RIP)), that I’m hoping that whatever they decide to do is so off base from Martin that whatever I’m inevitably spoiled about won’t ruin anything. Like the Night King, for example. Hopefully Martin’s actually plot is so intricate that they just made up their own thing for the show.

        • RBear says:

The book will prob be entirely different than what’s on HBO, gotta be a first where the show is actually ahead of the book(s).

      • RBear says:

        I agree, posters of spoilers s/b horse-whipped.

    • SamSooner says:

RBear, you know I will be tuning in. I went to that website you shared with me. I’m hoping Jon Snow makes it. I find most of the characters flawed and not likable. He’s the only one I find a reason to rooting for.

      • RBear says:

Well, this show hasn’t ever followed the traditional good guy wins/bad guy loses template- I just hope that overall, none of us are disappointed in the end.

      • Drew says:

If IIRC, you’re a big reader, right? If so, I highly recommend giving the books a try. Martin’s grasp of subtly and nuance, combined with his history as a TV show writer, gives the books an incredible amount of depth that is simply glossed over or ignored by the show. With characters, for example, while each one is still flawed, their flaws are more understandable and better explained, and may change your opinions. For example, Brienne, Danaerys, Tyrion, and Stannis are all much different in the books. Especially Stannis. Sigh, poor Stannis.

    • I mean really though, is there anything you need to catch up on? The whole show is the same thing over and over again.
Hey audience, here’s this guy. He has money. And he dies!
Hey audience, here’s another guy. He’s from the north. And he dies!
Hey audience, here’s another guy. He has iron. And OMG he dies!
Hey audience, here’s another guy. He has lots of wives. And then he dies!
Hey audience, here’s another guy. He has magic demons. And then guess what – he dies!
Hey audience, here’s another guy. He has boats. And…. he dies!
      Oh hey, a cool midget.
      LOL it’s cold now LOL.
So like, who hasn’t died yet? Okay yeah that’s right… OMG he dies!
Hey audience, isn’t this fun? It’s fun right? No? Okay then, here’s some boobs.

I have never watched,is it to late for me to understand it?

        • MoJoOkie says:

See JRBD’s post and you’re up to speed.

        • ALar03 says:

If you have down time since its the worst part of the sports year And have hbo… They have every season on there, I just rewatched the last 3 seasons to remind myself What was going on haha

        • cush creekmont says:

Metz, my wife asked that in January of 15. She got on the ONDEMAND for HBO and binge watched every season through 2014. When last year’s came on in April, she had only waited about a month, but was restless to see the season. Now after waiting a year, she has Sunday night fully planned out. I watched from the beginning, so I am used to waiting a year.

It is definitely worth it. The great thing about binge watching is that you will stay in “the sense of the story.” The bad thing is if you like it and catch up, waiting will seem like forever.

          • metzker says:

I will give it a try!

          • KJ1123 says:

Its mind numbing imo. Alot going on. I watched the very first episode when it first aired. And never watched another episode.

          • cush creekmont says:

KJ – there is a TON of backstory that takes time to develop. Because the whole “world” in which the story resides has its own rules, it takes time to be immersed in it.

I don’t blame you for not getting into it. If you do, you’ll likely want to know how things work out because there are SO MANY plot lines and characters.

          • KJ1123 says:

Oh yeah I know its a good show. But I missed the chance to get immersed in it from the get go. Sort of like Breaking Bad, I never got into it and missed the whole thing.

          • cush creekmont says:

Interesting point on BB. I too missed it. I was curious when the last season was on and all the hype hit the media, but I refrained from watching. I then found a full marathon and watched all the episodes from all the years in a two week span.

It was a great show as one watches Walter White (the innocent chemistry teacher) become involved in the Meth world and then become a different person.

Anyway, lots of things to do with one’s time rather than watch any show. I think both are worth it. But DEFINITELY watch from the beginning.

        • SamSooner says:

          You left the door O-PENNNNNN!!!!

        • Jordan Esco says:

You wouldn’t be able to just jump in, no. You’d have to go back and get caught up to not be completely lost, IMO.

    • ALar03 says:

Definitely been looking forward to it since the crazy ending to last season!

  • Matt says:

I think Iowa State is a pretty reasonable upset pick. They’ll be running a new offense and will get OU on a Thursday night the week before a big game against Baylor. Recipe for disaster if you ask me. I think that WVU does have bigger potential but Iowa State is reasonable. Just remember what they did to OSU in ’11

    • DCinAZ says:

Iowa State have never shown any ability to stay with us for even a half of football. That guy’s article is a clown show.

      • Matt says:

I’m merely basing my opinion on OU’s tendency to let one sneak up and bite them and the fact that Iowa State recently ruined OSU’s dream season. That’s all I’m saying.

      • SamSooner says:

All I can say is that I hate playing in Ames, Iowa. Crazy things happen up there, like wind and rain.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Might want to check your history.

        • DCinAZ says:

What about it? Besides Bradford’s freshmen year when we struggled up in Ames I can’t think of another time they’ve stayed with us.

      • OUgrad82 says:

look back to the early 80’s, should have beat OU, they missed 3 field goals that day. I think OU won 10-7, If my memory serves right.

      • cush creekmont says:

Since 1962, OU has lost ONCE to ISU and tied ONCE.

ISU has a better record in Norman (8.3%) than at home (6.6%) against OU – both are horrid. OU is 93.4% in Ames (2 losses ALL time).

        Last loss anywhere – 1990 31 to 33 (OU – ISU)
        1981 7 – 7 tie
        1970 squeaker OU win 29 – 28

        ONLY back-to-back losses (under GOMER) 1960, 1961

TOTAL ISU HAS 5 WINS and 2 Ties (2 wins and 1 tie are PRIOR to 1932)

(ISU won the FIRST meeting in 1928)

    • Rick says:

I usually don’t pull for any other Big12 team, and I certainly don’t pull for anyone EVER, against OUr Sooners, but I occasionally find myself pulling for ISU. Over the years they have over achieved, been gritty, didn’t give up, played every down like it was the last play of the game, and left everything on the field. They, at times, have pulled the unbelieveable upset, and can be a pain for any team looking past them. If you are going to beat OUr sooners in recent history, you have to have a superior passing attack or superior athletes (Baylor and Clemson examples). ISU has neither, I would be shocked if ISU lasts the 1st quarter.

      • Scott says:

        Baylor doesn’t have superior athletes.

        • Rick says:

I didn’t say they did, I said they had a superior passing attack and Clemson had superior athletes.

      • SamSooner says:

I’m with you. If I were coaching at ISU, I’d be offensive minded. I’d make a team have out score me. They are never going to stop other teams with the defense they have.

      • Matt says:

Am I allowed to point to Colorado in 07 that had neither? Or is that too far back?

        • Rick says:

That ISU team has grit, they have some amazing young men who saved a drunk lady, that didn’t know it wasn’t safe to drive her vehicle into a canal. What they don’t possess is enough (football) athletes to beat OU on their best, best, best day. CU in 2007 did have their best day, Bradford had the worst day of his career. Any team overlooking another team, or through major injury can be upset by another team. ISU is just not equipped to be that team.

        • cush creekmont says:

          Much different historical records –

          OU – CU = 40 – 17 -2 in favor of OU

          In Boulder – 16 – 9 -2 in favor of OU 63% (vs 93.4% OU at Ames)

    • Rick says:

    • Scott says:

      Won’t happen.

    • Bob Edwards says:

OU is 73-5-2 all time with three wins since the Great Depression. Bob Stoops has never lost to Iowa State. John “the worst coach OU ever had” Blake never lost to ISU. It could happen, but it ain’t likely.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Based on what? The schedule? OU has to play someone before Baylor, glad it’s the Cyclones. 65-14 the good guys. ESPN mythology about Thursdays.

  • Matt says:

anyone ever find the spring game somewhere online that doesn’t require a subscription?

  • Dick Bump says:

I’m not on the TCU bandwagon yet. OU has fared fairly well against them. However, at TCU, in between tOSU and UT, could be a big one, more so than Iowa State.

    • DCinAZ says:

I don’t know why there would be a TCU bandwagon. They should have a lot of dropoff this year after everybody they lost.

      • Brent says:

I’m a big believer in Patterson. That dude can flat out coach.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yep, they play hard, physical defense and that keeps them in most every game.

        • RBear says:

Besides his D, he’s not one-dimensional, he adapts and can be innovative if necessary… hmmm…

      • Scott says:

TCU is the only other school in this conference that plays with passion & heart. TCU always has great coaching.

      • Dick Bump says:

Yep. But if there’s going to be a WTF? game, this will be a good candidate.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Jake Arrieta with his second no-hitter in his last 11 reg. season starts yesterday. I’m trying to remember this is the Cubs and they will likely find a way to botch the season but man with their offense and the starting pitching they have…”this could be the year”, actually has some meaning to it.

  • hOUligan says:

Good morning’ TFBs!! This Daily is packed w/ good OU news from every angle. From the Director’s Cup to the nfl draft and APRs. A lot of good reasons to feel good about being a Sooner!!! Now, just need a BOOM this weekend to top it all off.

  • KJ1123 says:

    Me = googled “boondoggle”

  • Nate Broadus says:

Coming back was the best decision Buddy Hield could have ever made. He helped his draft stock immeasurably, not to mention elevated a once struggling program to new heights. Definitely one of my favorite Sooners of all-time.

  • RocketCitySooner says:

I’m truly disappointed that the Brainiacs didn’t include this in Sooner news.

APRIL 22, 1889: The Oklahoma Land Rush opens at noon as some 50,000 people scramble to stake a claim within the two million acres of of unassigned land offered under the terms of the 1862 Homestead Act. Settlers known as “Boomers” had been arriving in the region for more than a decade in defiance of federal law and were routinely removed, and after continuing pressure Congress finally opened up a portion of what was known as the western Indian territory for legal settlement. Those enterprising few who snuck in before the official start became known as “Sooners,” a term later adopted as the state motto. By the end of that first day, Oklahoma City had a population of some 10,000 people. The remaining Indian-held lands were opened to settlement by 1893, and in 1907 Oklahoma became the 46th state.

If they did, I apologize. I searched but did not find it.

    • MoJoOkie says:

      Too soon.

    • Dick Bump says:

      Politically insensitive.

    • blaster1371 says:

My grandpa was a Boomer. Had a scar on his head from taking a near hit from a Sooner. According to my uncles whenever he went into town (Sulphur- he moved into Murray county after selling his original patch of land from the run) he would categorize people as boomers and Sooners . That chant at football games always carried a special meaning to me.

      • RocketCitySooner says:

I never understood the difference between Boomers and Sooners until I read this article.

  • cush creekmont says:

I haven’t said so in a bit due to work, but I appreciate The Sooner News Daily, and read it even if late in the evening. Thanks Jordan!

ps – maybe you’ll need a separate GOT thread going forward so we “watchers” don’t take up too much space.

  • Travis Hill says:

Maybe I should go back and watch some of the games but I don’t remember Sheppard being “outmuscled” on slant from the slot. I’m refering to that report from Pro Football Focus.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Upset alert with Iowa St. Nope. They’ve never proven they can score with us. As far as TCU, that’s been a tough game but who says Hill is going to be even close to Boykin? Jury out. Further, OU was winning last year’s game 30-13 at one point even with the back up throwing the ball in the dirt and over the heads of receivers. We are focused on Houston any way.
