Sooners News Daily 11.23.15

I’m not saying Baker Mayfield won’t play Saturday night in Bedlam. In fact, in my own personal opinion I think there is a better than decent chance he does play. However, there’s no way I, or anyone, can know that for sure at this point.

I couldn’t help but laugh when this came into my TL yesterday afternoon.

And never one to disappoint, the local media came through like they always do.

So less than 24 hours after the fact to imply Mayfield will play, make up some s#$% about your “instincts” leading you to believe Mayfield will play (give me a f’ing break), or flat-out state Mayfield WILL play (which is particularly disingenuous and a borderline bold-faced lie) is equal parts a shamelessly transparent and pathetic attempt just to be THE FIRST(!!!!) to report something and/or desperation for clicks/page views.

Okay, sorry, rant over. I just had to get that out of my system.

Yes, I would hope for this type of Wx so we can load up and dish it off to Perine & Mixon. Control the game clock and keep their O off the field. Show the CFP committee that we can do power football too.

I don’t think we/you have to hope too much. It’s looking like a cold, rainy game.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Jordan, Baker has passed the tests. Period. The question is if symptoms reappear. But according to reports, he no longer has symptoms. In light of that, I can say he’ll play.

    • Glocal Sooner says:

That’s what I’ve seen reported as well. I’m sure Bob will get the opportunity to answer a question or two about today. Ha!

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Exactly. Baker is supposed to be available to the media as well. The key is the first practice.

    • lulzer says:

You’re correct. They did tests Sunday morning, he had breakfast with a group including coaches… No headache, fog, or any other trauma. He is fine and will play.

  • Dick Bump says:

Great, turkey week with a big game coming up. It reminds me of OU-Nebraska with all the marbles on the line. These are some of the things I love about college football, a passionate fan base and a meaningful rivalry game. I like the Sooners’ chances this week. Boomer!

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

Wow. The line for OU moved from -3.5 to -4 already. How much more will it move if Baker is officially cleared to play?

  • Indy_sooner says:

Not to beat a dead horse but I am shocked at the disparity between our #1 and #2 QB. How can teams like Baylor, be seamless from their #1 all the way to #3? Is it just jitters?

    • SamSooner says:

I would not put too much stock into that: there are recent examples that all is not golden. Look at what happened when texsa had Garrett Gilbert step in for McCoy. Look at tOSU last year. I would imagine most of that success comes from the opponent’s lack of preparation.

I’ve had some of my best rounds of golf hopping out of the car and running straight to the first tee. Sometimes, when you don’t have to think about what’s happening you have your best performances.

We are good at QB and we are getting better.

    • rainydaze114 says:

Knight was awful, but I can’t remember a QB for any team coming in midway through a game and being a worldbeater.

Mike & Mike on ESPN are not giving any love to the Big 12 this morning. Big surprise coming from eSECpn, I know. Loved how Danny Kanell blew their bias and stupid justifications out the window. Just shows how people apply certain criteria against the Big 12 but won’t use the same criteria against teams from other conferences.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Weird… Perhaps that’s why equations/algorithms should be used in these matters, along with some human (subjective, unreliable) judgments.

The easiest example is Alabama and the “eye test.” The “eye test” is why Bama is so far to the top. Let’s apply the “eye test” to Ohio State (i.e., before they lost). No one cared about how pedestrian they look or, if they did, they discounted it heavily. The talking heads and mouths simply said “they’re the defending National Champion.”

      • SoonerinLondon says:

Bama gets the benefit of the eye test but OU is judged by the loss to Texsa. Complete bollocks.

If Bama gets the eye test, so should OU.

If who beat who matters, Bama lost to Ole Miss, who lost to Memphis, so Memphis should be ranked higher.

I don’t care the measure but do care about consistent measurement.

Bring back the computer age of the BCS, circa 2003. At least computers were consistent.

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

Depends upon the set of eyes doing the testing. But Herbie on Game Day last Saturday said an equivalent of OU passing his eye test. He said something to the effect of OU looks like a complete team.

    • RBear says:

Bowl time should sort a lot of that out.

      • SamSooner says:

They’ll never admit they’re wrong. I know they won’t. But that would give me a little satisfaction.

Someone needs to make a montage of the past ten years when the talking heads, vehemently, predicted a winner but they were all wrong.

        • Clay Davis says:

          That would last days.

I’ve always said that being a pundit must be the best job in the world. You can say stupid outlandish things all day, but as long as one of your dumb predictions is right, you’ll never be fired.

    • rainydaze114 says:

Concussions are no joke man. A football game isn’t worth a possible lifetime of mental disability.

      • Birddawg says:

He continued to play. The docs precautionary withheld him. If he had a shown serious signs they would have ordered a MRI. But we haven’t heard of any reports of that. I didn’t want to slight the obvious high risks of a concussion.
I just think the Docs were being cautious and we will hear soon that he’s back to practicing.

        • rainydaze114 says:

All of your points are moot, basically. The fact that he continued to play doesn’t mean anything other than he was good at avoiding the medical staff. He was obviously shaken up. You could see it on his face. A concussion isn’t always diagnosed with an MRI either because it doesn’t cause structural damage to the brain so it wouldn’t even show up. That’s typically just to make sure there isn’t more serious injuries (bleeding, swelling).

          • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

As I understand it, concussions can cause structural damage such as internal bleeding, lesions, decreased brain volume, and possibly a skull fracture.

          • rainydaze114 says:

Those can go along with a concussion and are a result of head trauma, but the concussion itself doesn’t cause that.

          • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Yes, better wording. A concussive force, causing a concussion, can cause structural damage.

          • Birddawg says:

He was showing 1 sign of a grade 1 concussion. Thus, after 36 hours if no renewed symptoms occur he is fine. Unless, the doctor orders a MRI and that is evidence of how serious it is. Then its not a grade 1 and you wont see him playing on Sat.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Let’s get into the holiday spirit with some silly nonsense.

    A Visit From T. Boone

Twas the week before Bedlam, when in the Gundy home,
Cale was in bed, leaving Mike all alone.
Mike looked into their room, and when he saw his brother sleeping,
He shut the door quietly, and down the hall he went creeping.

Pass the kitchen, the pantry, the closet for brooms.
He slipped past the couch. He stopped at no rooms.
Into the night he went. In his hand was a sack.
He shivered in the cold, despite the coat on his back.

And from the sack he retrieved, several dollars in rolls.
He made a circle of money that from his parents he stole.
He lit a single candle. He stripped to his undies.
There was evil afoot at the home of the Gundies.

“Show me the money!” Said Gundy to the night.
“Show me the money!” And soon came the sight:
A Cadillac in black, the blackest, my reader.
Not powered by horses, but by the souls of world leaders.

Coins from the carriage, hit Mike on the head,
Then the window rolled down, from which a voice said:
“You got five minutes. That’s all you could steal?”
It was that of T. Boone, the richest of heels.

“Show me my future. Please show me,” said Mike.
“My brother is better at everything we like.
His game is so good. His girls are so pretty.
He has talent galore, and he rules Midwest City.”

“He runs like a horse. He kicks like a mule.
He is the opposite of me, and I’m the opposite of cool.”
From the window came a smile, ivory fangs with gold fillings.
“Come to Stillwater with me. For with me you’ll make a killing.”

“Championships are overrated. You can buy them, you see?
You’ll have a five-loss buffer if you’re coaching for me.
Sure, it’s not Norman. The pickings are slim.
The men are all jerks, and the women are all men.”

“Let your brother be better, smarter, wiser, and quicker.
Who cares what he is when your wallet is thicker.
Just sign the dotted line,” said the wealthy old sinner.
“Come roll with the rollers, while he wins with the winners.”

And wouldn’t you know it, that night they made a deal.
The pact it was made. Their fate it was sealed.
Cale would ride the Schooner through the glories of battle.
While Mike took the douchecanoe to become it’s lead paddle.

The Cadillac departed, not another word said.
Mike went to his kennel, beneath his bro’s bed.
He would never beat Cale, Mike laughed at the thought,
But who needs success if success can’t be bought?

Five losses. So what? Six losses. Who cares?
He would pay dictators to come spike his hair.
And if in the event, he played a championship game,
Regardless of the outcome, he’d get paid all the same.

Mike Gundy giggled at the thoughts in his head.
He giggled and giggled until he wet his paper bed.
With a snort and with glee, he rolled in his pee,
That’s when the kennel door locked, and Mike stopped giggling to see:

Behind the kennel door, smiled his younger brother.
Mike yelled for help. He yelled for their mother.
While they waited for her, Cale gave Mike a mooner.
That’s when they heard Mama’s voice: “Shut up. And Boomer Sooner.”

  • RBear says:

Since when has the media withheld speculation or waited for anything official to be released before reporting on an issue with as much interest as Baker’s condition?

It’s a story and it will be reported on- no surprises here.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Definitively stating Mayfield WILL play before anyone, including Mayfield himself, could possibly know that isn’t “reporting” s#$%, it’s making something up. Cite whatever sources you want, that’s nothing more than wishful thinking at this point.

      • RBear says:

From what I read, what you posted, it said: “…according to my sources…” or “… per our sources…”. (possibly paraphrased).

Like it or not, this is a story of interest and if someone in a similar job as yours, even those who are paid to do so, receives some info from a “source”, they have every right to report what they’re hearing- if it’s later proved to be inaccurate, so what- they were only informing those who were interested in what’s being said at any given time. Some situations are fluid.

While I appreciate what this site brings to us OU fans, I have, on more than one occasion, wondered why you take such issue with any other source of information concerning OU athletics. If your approach is to more thoroughly check into things, that’s fine- just don’t expect everyone else to sit around and not report on a story of this magnitude.

        • Jordan Esco says:

If you knew anything about me, you’d know I’m ALL about getting as much OU info from as many credible places as you can get it. It’s why I put these posts together almost every day and why I spend more time on the Internet than I’d care to admit.

What I do have a problem with and what you should be referring to is when people are allowed to get away w/ stuff like this. I call them on it knowing full well it does nothing to change things, but I don’t really care.

Saying ‘your instincts’ tell you something is just another way to say you’re guessing. You can have a source tell you any number of things, but if they’re telling you Mayfield WILL play on Sat less than 24 hours after a head injury and well before anyone, again including Mayfield himself, could ever possibly know that, let alone state it as a definitive fact, means using some common f’ing sense and either don’t report it or find a responsible way to put it out there.

I feel a misguided and forever unfulfilled obligation to try and help OU fans wade thru all the dumb s#$% people put out there. I don’t expect anyone else to get that or even care. I do what I do b/c I want to do it, just like everyone out there has every right to ignore it should they see fit. Won’t hurt my feelings 🙂

          • Dick Bump says:

I don’t always agree with your opinion on things, but I agree with you there is a lot of BS put out. Of course, if they didn’t do it there would be a lot less to read, and sometimes laugh at. I appreciate the time you and the others put into this board. I think it’s by far the most knowledgeable and best out there…Not to mention it’s free.

            well put

        • Jared William Reininger says:

I think all Jordan is saying, and I am not him so correct me if I am wrong Mr. Esco, but he is saying they would prefer not to rush a story out until they have been able to confirm as much as possible that it is indeed factual. From what I have seen they are right far more times than wrong. I personally prefer them over other sites for this, sure I can jump in and read something that says OU has 40 recruits committing this week…but how much can I believe it is factual.

          • Jordan Esco says:

Pretty much. I’m absolutely fine w/ reporting the facts as they are right now. And in part that’s what some have done. It’s the adding your own spin to things based on stuff they couldn’t possibly know right now, b/c OU fans take that and run w/ it as fact when it simply isn’t.

It’s always funny how if it’s news you want to hear, it immediately becomes legitimate. Never works that way when it’s bad news, though. Funny how that works 🙂

          • Jared William Reininger says:

Yep. As a die hard OU fan I have a love hate relationship with many other fans because they read anything good and go AWESOME! ITS TRUE! and anything bad and its BUT WHERE ARE THERE SOURCES?! Human nature I suppose. But as anyone who is familiar with reporting knows, you probably will never know any reporters sources. Because that is how reporting works.

          • Bob Edwards says:

And as a die hard OU fan I have an equal love hate relationship with many other fans because they read anything bad and go AWESOME! IT’S TRUE! and anything good and it’s BUT WHERE ARE THEIR SOURCES?!

          • Jared William Reininger says:

            Agreed…well said sir.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

No one teaches critical thinking skills. And people are so inclined to only read what they already believe. Absorbing conflicting information is hard and requires effort. People are just lazy (intellectually, at least).

          • Bob Edwards says:

The problem is that, if the teachers taught critical thinking skills, then the students would know that half of what they are currently being taught in school is BS.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

            Amen to that Bro!

          • Jordan Esco says:

True. But I don’t need to know their sources, we do enough of that here to know they won’t be your source for very long if you go around naming them.

My point, I guess, was really more about common sense and even if you get something from a reputable source, to come out and state as fact Mayfield will play is not only premature, but completely disingenuous.

          • brainpimp says:

Unless it’s true and they found out before you did.

          • Dick Bump says:

That is funny how that works! Also, if a rumor is repeated enough, no matter how ridiculous, it becomes a fact that others use to base their assumptions.

          • Jordan Esco says:

            very true

      • BoomerDave says:

Kinda like TFB reporting a week before our opener with Akron that the starting QB battle was between Thomas and Knight with Mayfield a distant 3rd?

        • Jordan Esco says:

Yep, apples to apples just like that. Keep up the good work.

I can’t lie, though. I do admire your dedication to continue harping on this one item. Let me know whenever you get around to continually referencing all the things TFB has got right & that you read here first, for free.

It’s a much longer list and I’m really looking forward to reading it once you get it compiled.

          • BoomerDave says:

Continued harping? You and I have a different definition of continued harping. It’s my second mention EVER!! Continued harping is your every week complaining about the local media at every single press conference. And in this instance, calling out the local media for articles that they have yet to even write! Now that’s humorous! Just my $.02.

          • Jared William Reininger says:

Look I don’t know Jordan at all aside from reading his work. But you calling them out on one mistake literally MONTHS ago is not only immature but asinine. Not to say it was even a mistake. Maybe Trevor got disgruntled and has stopped working. Maybe as I pointed out his reps have dropped in number and he just isn’t getting the new system. I mean there are a number of reasons he played awful but to say well he is awful now and therefore he was awful 3 months ago is a bit absurd to me. I don’t expect Jordan or K or any other media writer to be right 100% of the time. I barely expect them to be right 50% of the time….no offense, but that is just how the world works I guess, but if you want to jump out there and say LOOK AT WHAT YOU GOT WRONG, you make yourself look childish. They have been wrong on numerous occasions, what is your point? If you want an explanation, well I hate to tell you but none of them are at the practice facility on a daily basis and since none of the people in the practice facility on a daily basis are reporters, you are stuck with what you got which is reporting from sources. I don’t agree with Jordan all the time but I also think he does his very best to give out factual information on the site and he also is willing to warn you , hey, we can’t confirm this and while the writer doesn’t say it clearly, it is speculation on his part as best I can tell.

          • Jordan Esco says:

If by second mention ever, you mean second in the span of a couple days then, yeah.

          • BoomerDave says:

No, like second EVER!! But of course the truth here doesn’t fit your point.

          • Jared William Reininger says:

        • Jared William Reininger says:

I just want to point out that was months ago. More than likely trevors number of reps in practice has dwindled and since the new system has become more familiar among the players, it has probably become more complicated of a playbook. Now I am not going to sit here and say oh they are right 100% of the time but right more than not. But pointing out one error, repeatedly is kind of humorous to me. Just my $.02

You’re a funny dude, who, if I’m correct, doesn’t think to highly of himself. You’re humble and you just want to fit in. I appreciate what you bring to the board.

I also eat SPAM and cabbage way more than what is probably healthful. Thanks, Sam. Feeling the love.

The whole Mayfield assumption sounds like NIck Saban to Texas.

  • Glocal Sooner says:

MASSIVE (as the Brits would say) shout out to the Sooner Edition of TFB. I have been checking out the Texas Edition just to see who they’re talking about. There’s no more than about 20 comments on any given post. We have hundreds and thousands!!! #BOOMERSOONER

  • Waters says:

    Penalty.
One who deliberately targets the head should not play football .
First infraction – out for the season
Second infraction – out of football

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

      Deliberately is a judgement call.

      • Waters says:

What’s your judgement call on the BM hit?

        • SoonerfanTU says:

There was nothing about it that looked definitively deliberate to me. The guy put his head down. It was just a bad tackle, in that regards.

Why would a defender want to risk injury to himself by doing something like that intentionally? And risk getting thrown out? You can hit a QB hard, hurt him, make him feel it, without going helmet to helmet. I think that people try to suggest these are intention in any way are silly.

          • Waters says:

There are no intentional head hits?

          • SoonerfanTU says:

I won’t say no, but I bet there aren’t many. What kid wants to get thrown out of the game? Again, if you want to hurt a guy, you can do it without trying to go helmet to helmet.

        • Lane Gilstrap says:

I thought it was dirty but we know that even with replay the refs don’t always get things right. That’s my point.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

I thought it was as obvious a targeting infraction as you’ll likely see, especially BM was almost already on the ground.

    • hOUligan says:

I’d insert another level. 1st is 3 game suspension followed by ‘the season’ for 2nd and banned for 3rd. That hit was deliberate and dangerous. He should be suspended by the league for longer. It possibly cost OU a shot at Big 12 and national title and could potentially end Bakers career.

    • leatherneck1061 says:

      Exactly

    • Stephen Dale says:

agree completely……the targeting was intentional to level the playing field for TCU to get back into the game…..TCU gladly sacrificed the contribution of a LB to remove Mayfield from the game equation………….same with Oakman’s hit on Knight last year…………

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Did the way we won help or hurt recruiting?

    • SamSooner says:

An ugly win is better than a pretty loss.
Mind you, this wasn’t an ugly win. This was a gutsy performance. OU’s defense won the game. Let that sink in.

      • EasTex says:

Feeling and hearing 85,000+ erupt in excitement? The recruits would have to be without emotion if they didn’t get into that.

    • Jordan Esco says:

My guess is excitement, assuming you come out on the winning end, can only help you. But I’m also not an 18-year old so….

  • SoonerinLondon says:

Regarding Baker, a friend had brunch with Baker and his parents yesterday. Baker said he did not have a concussion and that he had to pass two tests this week to play; 1) remember details about the game, 2) have no more headaches.

Take it for what it’s worth.

    • Glocal Sooner says:

Is this like me having lunch with Eduardo Najera every Sunday after church when I was in college? I often had lunch at Don Pablos in Norman. He was always there with his family as well. We usually sat a table or two apart. I’m pretty sure he and I did the “guy what’s up head nod” each week.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

I’m betting he won’t admit to headaches even if he has them.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

I was thinking the same thing. He’s a fierce competitor and wants to play in Big Game more than anyone. He will do and say anything to not hurt his chances.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

Someone needs to send him a cheat sheet to study about the game. Maybe that quarterly recap from the Jokelahoman.

  • soonerjunky says:

Anyone know if there is a real chance Trevor Knight is the third string? Is it possible that Cody Thomas is the back up and starter if Mayfield can’t go? If knight does play, is he on a short leash?

    • Kevin Burger says:

I don’t know, but I would imagine that if Cody Thomas doesn’t move up to second string for this week, then he never will.

      • soonerjunky says:

If Knight is not replaced by Thomas, then Thomas NEVER had a chance to play. I would transfer if I were Thomas. (If Knight plays instead of him).

        • Kevin Burger says:

The only thing that would give me pause is that I’d have to sit out a year before I could play again, at which point, TK would have graduated. So if I didn’t think I could win the starting job my senior year either, then ya, I’d transfer.

      • BoomerDave says:

It’s got me to wondering if the reason Cody wasn’t given a chance on Saturday was that perhaps he has “checked out” mentally. Become a bit disconnected due to lack of playing time. Not basing this on anything but pure speculation, but sure thought he could have been an option Saturday night.

    • Glocal Sooner says:

Based on what LR said postgame, I would suspect that Trevor is the backup again but Riley would do a better job of putting him in a position to be successful.

    • Daddy R says:

I’m not sure Knight should play again unless we need some extra help against Bama.

  • Mizuno44 says:

Imagine how brutal it must have been for Mayfield to watch from the sidelines Saturday night

  • CKill1 says:

I realize that Mayfield’s health is not only a subject of all our interests(naturally) but also the biggest factor in our continued success, but chill out a bit. No one outside Baker, the team doctors, & training staff knows anything. I see endless comments here speculating on concussions and some even attempting to post “facts” about concussions. Just stop, please. Unless any of you are neurologists, neurosurgeons, or the like then you’ll just have to wait for info from the team. Now, am I a neurologist? No. I’m a humble ICU nurse with 22 years of adult ICU experience, most of which has been spent in a trauma ICU, caring fortraumatic brain injury(TBI) patients every day. Concussions are scary and poorly understood(we’re still learning more every damn day). A couple facts to keep you googling all day: 78% of all concussions don’t show up on any type of scan, either MRI or CT and aren’t even indicated unless severe, prolonged symptoms persist. Most concussions simply don’t cause detectable structural changes in the brain. Concussions are CUMULATIVE. Each successive concussion after the first increases the damage. This is fairly new knowledge and the reason we are so careful with head injuries now compared to say, even 5 years ago. Some symptoms can show up weeks after the original injury. Fewer than 10% of all sports-related concussions involve an actual loss of consciousness. Now, Baker passed each Impact Protocol test he was given on the sideline following the injury. That’s good, but doesn’t mean he will play. If any symptoms surface between now and game day, he most likely won’t play. All we can do as fans is hope for the best.

    • Mizuno44 says:

You can’t possibly believe that die hard Sooner fans will not use this site to speculate on the biggest, injury related development to the season, Mayfield’s head injury. I appreciate your medical background and expertise, and with all due respect, perhaps your post belongs on WebMd.

      • Exiled In Ohio says:

I appreciated his post. I don’t understand why you felt the need to attack it.

        • Mizuno44 says:

It’s a grumpy Monday and I was perhaps a bit harsh, but I felt it was a little disrespectful to folks who have been discussing this issue. The information was great, but telling everyone to chill out didn’t sit well.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

Thank you for your informed commentary. Much appreciated.

    • Waters says:

Routine MRI and CT scans will not show injury from an uncomplicated concussion.
DSI or fMRI will. Not routinely available or used, expensive, not cost effective.
If no injury – play. An objective expensive test not subject to human error.
Most important fact is that head injuries are cumulative.
The 2nd, 3rd are much more destructive than the 1st unless give time to completely heal.
ICU head trauma Rx is very important. Thank you for your commitment, service and expertise.

    • EasTex says:

      Well said.
Not a fan of speculation, big fan of facts.

    • Kevin says:

As a Neuro-ophthalmologist who regularly diagnoses and treats visual problems associated with concussions, I appreciate your post.

  • leatherneck1061 says:

Whatever Baker’s status, the turd who hit him should receive a stiffer penalty than what the current rules allow. That was one of the dirtiest, most egregious cheap shots I’ve ever seen in a football game.

  • thebigdroot says:

They have a new post up on Baker.

  • JJSoona says:

Am I the only one who see’s another parallel with 2000? This game and the A&M game where a defensive play saved our chit? Its a little bit scary in a way. Baker/Josh…..both play as a starter in their 1st year here. Defensive plays in both games sealed the deal(Torrance Marshall/Steven Parker) Yeah we have a loss A$$tex but still………..

Oh and Baker Mayfield’s mvp status took a huge jump. Aside from play-calling, plays weren’t being made after he left. We only scored 7 after half. TCU is a really good defense playing inspired but they took advantage of Baker being out and made life tough for Trevor. Just different skill-sets to defend. We got through it. Maybe this was a wakeup call like the RRR embarrassment. I think this game gave some fodder for practice this next week. Pokes are going to be in a foul mood. This may be toughest game to date

SNL skit was one of the dumbest things they have done in 20 years. that’s saying something.

  • Cush Creekmont says:

I thought all along that Patterson wanted to beat BU worse than he did OU. After a series of fortunate events developed after the 3rd quarter, he could see a chance for a win. I think his statement shows his thinking – Patterson on going for two at OU: If game lasts three OTs, TCU has ‘no chance to win’ next week.

I hope TCU and Patterson DO beat the Briler Bears.
