7pm tomorrow night seems so far away. Gonna have to stay busy tomorrow, or I’ll go crazy waiting for kickoff.

  • Kelly Gurbcock says:

Having trouble understanding why Brent V. is such a better DC now at Clemson than he was at OU.

    • Kelly Gurbcock says:

btw, part of me thinks it’s the competition he’s going up against. Thoughts?

    • Kelly Gurbcock says:

btw, part of me thinks it’s the competition he’s going up against. Thoughts?

    • Mason says:

He is playing in a conference his defenses are made for. He is going against more power run teams vs fast pass happy offenses of the Big 12-2. That’s why his last few years, when everyone started adapting some sort of the air raid in the Big 12-2, he finally started to struggle.

      • Kelly Gurbcock says:

why can’t the committee and national folks as a whole understand that the Big 12-2 has elite offenses and the way to grade Big 12 D’s is by pts per possession? If we can see it as casual observers obviously they can right?

    • Bob Edwards says:

How do you think he would have done with Diron Reynolds, Tim Kish, and Kerry Cooks as assistants? Maybe its not BV but the folks around him that were the issue. We have replaced them and we are doing better now. Sometimes a change is good for both parties.

      • SamSooner says:

I’m not sure but I can tell you what, he would have something special dialed up for Baylor and he would be aggressive. Think Missouri in the Big XII Championship game. Chase Daniel was frequently running into Mr. Curtis Lofton.

        • soonersd says:

True… Lofton was a bad mofo though too. While I’m thankful he came to OU (almost ended up at OSU) and happy for how well he has done for himself in the NFL I still can’t help but dream about how #8 would have been ours if he would have played his senior year in ’08.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Same reason Mike seems better this year. This stuff is cyclical. Those that expect a good DC to be good every game, every year, are just way off base. And BV wasn’t nearly as bad at OU as some seem to think. His per possession metrics were actually pretty good.

    • Birddawg says:

How many air raid high powered offenses are in the ACC?

    • Jordan Esco says:

      ACC, that’s why

      • Bill Duncan says:

        Ding Ding Ding…

      • Austin says:

If only everybody else understood this.

      • ND52 says:

If he’d failed to stop OU’s offense in the bowl game then this could be said.

        Alas………..

        • Josh says:

Actually no since last year OU was a run 1st offense which is the entire point.

          • ND52 says:

@disqus_E2Gl8QDmkp:disqus The fact that OU was, or was not, a run first offense is not the question at hand.

The point is this: OU had one of its worst offensive outings of 2014 vs a defensive coordinator that many on this board are trying to disparage simply because of the conference he coaches in.

Bottom line: OU looked horrible that night on offense. Much worse in several offensive categories than it averaged that year.

          • j l says:

Shepard wasnt 100%. Perine wasnt 100%. knight was far from 100%.

The only reason we had any offense at all the last 3-4 games was perine, and with him being pretty hobbled, well ya the offense was going to look terrible.

Venables surely deserves some credit, but he didnt see anywhere close to a full strength OU offense.

          • ND52 says:

Clemson seemed just fine on offense with their backup QB………

          • j l says:

well, our pass defense was terrible last year…remind me how their rushing game looked, was it 1.8 YPC they averaged on us?

          • ND52 says:

You’re doing a horrible job defending OU—-“he wasn’t that good it’s just that we sucked so bad”.

            Wow.

          • j l says:

Swoopes had more passing yards on us last year than clemson did…tyrone swoopes…

Yes, our pass defense was terrible last year, its not like it was a secret.

Why is a ND fan on our site anyway?

          • Boom says:

With all your BS, what is your point? BV is a good DC and he has some unbelievable talent at Clemson which he and the other coordinators at OU didn’t pull in. That is the key, he has talent. 08 we went to the natty and we were 54th in total D. No team outside of the top 10 in D won the natty. Neither did we.

          • ND52 says:

            @Boom:disqus

You consider statistical analysis BS? Wow.

          • Boom says:

No, you stated your point, fair enough. I gave Brent credit but I also used stats too.

          • brainpimp says:

Worst OU team in a decade, and you want to act like stopping them was hard.

          • Boom says:

Easy brainpimp, ND52 is on a roll. He is making his points like Briles when he only wants to talk football, not all the infractions.

        • Brad Warren says:

What offense? We had none at that point. No receivers at all. Perine was it.

      • tfb_fortyseven says:

It was an excellent move on his part. I’m sure he didn’t do it on his own either.

    • Brad Warren says:

He’s the same dc. Doesn’t face spread offenses in acc.

      • ND52 says:

He sure contained Notre Dame’s offense this season though. Season lows across the board.

        • Golfluvr13 says:

That was starting a true freshman QB.

        • j l says:

I like how you DONT highlight the fact that was a season high for passing yards for ND, only the completion % was a season low for them.

          Cherry pick much?

          • ND52 says:

Why can’t you just give this man the credit he deserves? ND got pantsed by the Clemson D that day. No denying that.

          • j l says:

I said earlier he deserves some credit.

Im just saying you are cherry picking stats to make your case.

You are acting 19/35 for 321 is completely shutting down the ND offense.

          • ND52 says:

You are acting 19/35 for 321 is completely shutting down the ND offense.

No I’m not and the stats don’t lie.

          • j l says:

The stats say that ND had their most passing yards for the year against clemson.

You are right, the stats dont lie.

          • ND52 says:

            @disqus_pGGAfoUXdO:disqus

ND’s offensive ranking in the Clemson game :

            Dead last in rushing yards.
Dead last in yards per attempt.
Tied for last in total yards.
Tied for last in yards per offensive plays.
Second worst passing completion percentage of the season.
A season high 4 turnovers. A full 33% of their season total. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/89f08c38747c45dd3dc3a4b56710f5001f00432660d868e2bb28e1fac584a674.jpg

          • j l says:

navy and pitt held ND to basically the exact same yards per play that clemson did.

Should we bow down to them too?

          • ND52 says:

            @disqus_pGGAfoUXdO:disqus

I’m just going to let you and the others keep on rambling since no amount of reason or logic will dissuade you from your attempts to discredit an obviously great coordinator.

          • j l says:

You are coming onto an OU site, asking people to shower praise on a former coordinator, who quite frankly underperformed for us.

Tell me how logical that is?

We have ALL said he deserves some credit, but apparently thats not to enough satisfy you.

          • ND52 says:

In your own mind you imagine that I’m asking for this @disqus_pGGAfoUXdO:disqus

          • j l says:

We have admitted he deserves some praise, and that dosent satisfy you. I’m not imagining anything.

Exactly what level of praise will satisfy you?

Where would YOU rank him amng current dc’s?

          • ND52 says:

We have admitted he deserves some praise, and that doesn’t satisfy you. I’m not imagining anything.

We’re obviously reading two completely different comment sections then @disqus_pGGAfoUXdO:disqus Which is perfectly understandable as many OU fans are still embarrassed by being dominated by a man who was, for all intents and purposes, fired by their school.

          • j l says:

how many times have i said that he deserves some praise, like 6 or 7 times now? Others have admitted the same.

I want you to answer my question. Where would you rank him among top DC’s in CFB?

          • j l says:

Yep, didnt figure the troll would answer my question.

I keep forgetting you cant be logical with trolls.

          • ND52 says:

And when you have nothing else to add to a discussion just resort to name-calling to get your point across.

            You stay classy @disqus_pGGAfoUXdO:disqus 😉

          • j l says:

And when you know that answering my question will invalidate your point, you simply dont respond.

You enjoy your time under the bridge irish troll.

We will continue to be happy with mike stoops, who has better defensive stats this year, than your hero brent venables.

          • ND52 says:

People like j l can only argue with emotion and rhetoric while I post clear, incontestable facts and use logic and reason to make my arguments.

            Too easy sir.

Clemson leads OU in every major defensive category this year.

          • j l says:

I already know you wont respond to this, in typical troll fashion, but here goes anyway

            Yards per play-
            OU- 5th
            Clemson- 11th

            Passing yards per attempt-
            OU- 3rd
            Clemson- 15th

            Sacks-
            OU-2nd
            Clemson 17th

            Interceptions-
            Ou-19th
            Clemson- 27th

Im sure theres more, but i dont really feel like looking any more up. Ive made my point.

          • ND52 says:

Bravo @disqus_pGGAfoUXdO:disqus—–but those are not the major defensive categories.

Total defense: Clemson 5th vs. OU 21st.

            Rushing defense: 20th vs. 49th.

Pass efficiency defense: 5th vs. 8th.

Third down conversion % defense: 1st vs. 75th.

Passing yards allowed: 7th vs 17th

          • j l says:

Yards per play isnt a major defensive category? ROFL

Fact of the matter is, OU and clemson let the same offense run 100 plays on them, OU will give up less yards.

Clemson has allowed a whopping 8 less points on the season, but OU has faced 118 more plays, so OU would beat them in a points per possession metric, also considered one of the most important out there to directly compare defenses.

Thats also not to mention that clemson has only faced 1 offense in the top 40 on the season, ND, while OU has faced 3.

So, OU’s defense is doing better than clemson in some categories, worse in some, but against tougher offensive competition.

Venables is a good DC, but frankly, im glad we have mike back instead of brent.

          • ND52 says:

            @disqus_pGGAfoUXdO:disqus

Venables is a good DC, but frankly, im glad we have mike back instead of brent.

OU has yet to face off against the three most explosive offenses on it’s schedule and yet you make this claim? Also, OU would’ve been shutout had Venables not called off his first teamers in your last bowl game. Utter and complete domination until late in the game yet you think your defensive coordinator to be his equal? No rational person would even dream of making this claim.

          • j l says:

Thanks for making my point for me. OU is going to face 6 top 40 offenses this year. Clemson? 1

Lot easier for venables to look good when he faces MUCH easier offenses. And he hasnt even been able to do that, since as i pointed out earlier, OU is better than clemson in many different metrics.

Who gives a crap about last year? We had an entirely different offensive scheme last year. You are trying to compare apples to oranges.

Only a completely ignorant person such as yourself tries to compare stats in a vacuum. You are probably one of the people who think the big 12 dosent play defense, despite the fact that tcu-osu was actually less points per possession than bama-lsu was.

Give me the team that allows less yards per play and less points per possession, which as i have noted with STATS, is the sooners.

          • ND52 says:

            @disqus_pGGAfoUXdO:disqus

Who gives a crap about last year? We had an entirely different offensive scheme last year. You are trying to compare apples to oranges.

OU went 8-5 last year, nearly got shutout for the first time in god only knows how many years by the person in question but…………..you don’t care?

            Lol! Suuuuuuuuuure you don’t.

Ask any analyst in the country who has the better defense as well as the better defensive coordinator.

          • j l says:

Am i happy about last year? of course im not. Were you happy with the irish’s 8-5 record from last year?

Im not any more or less happy about losing to clemson badly, as i was with losing to baylor badly.

Thats why we hired 6 new coaches, and changed offensive and defensive schemes. Change was needed, and it’s obviously working.

I could give a crap less what any analyst thinks. Most of them wont take the time to look at the picture as a whole. You ever hear them bringing up advanced metrics like yards per play, or points per possession? No, because most of the time, it runs counter to the point they are trying to make.

          • ND52 says:

            @disqus_pGGAfoUXdO:disqus

Of course OU looks better in yards allowed per play——they allow a lot more plays! Please see the 75th ranked 3rd down completion percentage stat vs Clemson’s #1 ranking in that category.

          • j l says:

Thats seriously the dumbest argument i have ever seen anyone make.

Ever hear of this thing called an uptempo offense before? OU faces more plays, because teams run a faster pace against us.

OU’s defense spends an extra 45 seconds per game more on the field than clemson does(using time of possession), but faces about 13 more plays a game than the clemson defense does.

Why is that? The offenses that OU faces snap the ball quicker, thus more plays faced per game.

And by facing more plays, our defense should be wearing down, and allowing MORE yards per play, not less, yet here we are.

No doubt that 3rd down metric is impressive, but once again, you are only looking at the surface. Think outside the box.

          • ND52 says:

            @disqus_pGGAfoUXdO:disqus

Have someone explain to you how teams in both the ACC and Big XII only get 4 downs to make a first down and how the stat I just mentioned directly impacts the number of plays your opponent can run against you.

            Here’s a hint: it’s hard to go up-tempo when you’re not_on_the_field.

          • j l says:

ok buddy, let me break this down for you

Ou’s defense spends 29 minutes and 38 seconds per game on defense, thats 1778 seconds. They have faced 689 plays this season, or 76.55 per game.

            SO our opponents run a play every 23.22 seconds(1778 / 76.55)

Clemson spends 28 minutes and 45 seconds per game on defense, thats 1725 seconds. They have faced 571 plays, or 63.44 plays per game.

            So clemson opponents run a play every 27.19 seconds( 1725 / 63.44)

OU’s opponents snap the ball 4 seconds faster EVERY SINGLE SNAP than clemsons opponents do.

Of course we have seen more plays, our opponents play at a much faster pace.

            Hint: you just got owned

          • ND52 says:

            @disqus_pGGAfoUXdO:disqus

Again with the childlike semantics. How tiring. Now I know how Eschbach and Traber must feel every day on the radio. Have a friend who’s been watching the game for awhile explain the rules and how they apply to everyone equally regardless of conference.

Also, have this person explain how using the HUNH can hurt your team instead of help it in the context of going three and out.

Good night and good luck to your team tomorrow.

          • j l says:

Ive been watching college ball since 1985, i think i understand things very clearly, thanks.

Maybe someone with some understanding of basic math can explain to you how 27 > 23, and how that directly affects the number of plays your opponent can run on you in the same 60 minute time frame that both the ACC and big 12 utilize.

            Enjoy getting smashed by stanford.

          • ND52 says:

Yeah I’m nowhere near the Stanford campus at the moment but………………oh well.

          • j l says:

And by the way, look at yards per play allowed this season:
            Clemson- 4.53
            OU- 4.27

How about you give mike stoops some credit…

          • ND52 says:

How bout you recognize that Mike Stoops is not the topic at hand @disqus_pGGAfoUXdO:disqus?

          • brainpimp says:

So you’re saying they threw all over Clemson , got it.

  • rainydaze114 says:

    Ideal scenario:

    OU wins out
    Oregon beats Stanford
    Stanford beats Notre Dame

That would seemingly put OU in the playoff… probably a first round rematch with Clemson?

  • metzker says:

PT is up yall are slow

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Trotter picked us to win in a big game… I don’t know what to do with myself.

Also, very interesting to see the OSU vs. ISU line and predictions. After last week’s demolition of TCU I would have thought they had gained some respect.

  • leatherneck1061 says:

Yes, Brent Venables is as elite as any DC in the country…..just like when he was in Norman

    • Brad Warren says:

Yes, he’s a good dc but had minimal success in defending spread offenses. Clemson doesn’t play against any spread teams, so yes, his defenses are highly ranked.

      • leatherneck1061 says:

But the counter to your point about the spread is that no one is having great success against the spread. You are right he has a much easier task in the ACC, but I still have yet to see any DC come in and own spread offenses. IMO, he and Mike have done as well as any other DC in CFB.

    • BoomerDave says:

Leatherneck….your memory is short. He, like all coordinators, was taking a beating from OU fans.

      • leatherneck1061 says:

BoomerDave…..my memory is not short. It is precisely those fans that I am talking too.

  • thebigdroot says:

@ron_allgood: ESPN just reported OU as having the best combined ranked FB & BB teams at 20(12+8) in the nation! @OU_Athletics @OU_Football @OU_MBBall

  • Mike Reed says:

I don’t know if this has been discussed on here or not, but a Baylor DB said they “plan on pitching a shutout” against us.

    http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/baylor-bears-oklahoma-sooners-db-we-plan-to-pitch-a-shutout-111215

Points given up by Baylor this year..

    SMU 21
    Lamar 31 (Home game)
    Rice 17 (Home game)
    Texas Tech 35 (Home game)
    Kansas 7
    West Virginia 38 (Home game)
    Iowa State 27 (Home game)
    Kansas State 24

The Baylor defense is averaging giving up 29.6 points per game at home this year.

OU has the #3 scoring offense in the country. Good luck shutting us out.
