Sooners News Daily 10.26.15

FOOTBALL

I particularly enjoyed the predictable butthurt from the local media after word got out that Joe Mixon would be appearing on Bob Stoops’ replay show Sunday night. I just find it funny because they act like fans are banging on doors demanding to hear from Mixon when, in reality, the only people who really care that Mixon has spoken with the media are the media.

In case you had yet to see/hear this.

Depending on how much time Russell may or may not miss could have an obvious impact on not just the Big 12 race, but the CFB playoff picture as well.

Another big job comes open.

This was great.

Today’s presser should be interesting.. How many times will Stoops have to dodge Mixon questions?

  • Cush Creekmont says:

Monday is sooooooooooooooooooooooo much better after a BIG win!

    Boomer!

    • cdzendolet says:

      Sooner!

And it sure is! I was getting giddy all over again watching hambone’s highlight vid. This team has a lot of talent, and it is fantastic to watch them utilize it!

  • DR LEO MARVIN says:

    Boomer.

  • lovethemsooners says:

I hope Mixon spends his entire OU career here and never does an interview with the local media…….by choice.

  • Payton Glen Guthrie says:

I, and I may be the only one, would like to see Mixon speak to the media. It makes sense at this point.

    • OUhound says:

My only problem with the media is that they won’t let the past be the past. The story is more important to them. A C note says they can’t keep from askin about what happened almost a year and a half ago.

      • Payton Glen Guthrie says:

Until he speaks about it the past is still very much relevant.

        • brainpimp says:

Oh really? So once he speaks about it will become irrelevant? Not by a long shot. Just media wanting to rehash old crap and run their PC bullsh** game.

          • Payton Glen Guthrie says:

You sound like your head is in the sand a bit.

          • ouwooferman says:

This is 19 yr old kid. No he is not an adult yet emotionally. Why distract him, the team, and OU fans with a media fire storm that will not serve anyone but you and all other haters.

When he graduates and or heads to the NFL…then.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

It’s a dead story. Get over it.

    • RocketCitySooner says:

I don’t see what Mixon speaking to the media would accomplish. The only question the media wants to ask Mixon is: “Don’t you think that if you were not a five star athlete, you would have been barred from college and professional football for life”?

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

He just needs to gracefully decline to speak about it. Next question.

        • RocketCitySooner says:

The “Next question” would be the same as the first question: “Don’t you think that if you were not a five star athlete, you would have been barred from college and professional football for life”? The headline would be “Mixon Refuses to Admit Favoritism.”

      • Payton Glen Guthrie says:

Show the public the contrition. Then move on.
It only takes one showing and that’s that. Until then it follows him like a shadow.

        • brainpimp says:

Oh yea, it will just disappear like the mist on a fall morning. /rolleyes

          • Payton Glen Guthrie says:

And never speaking about it only makes it loom larger and larger.

          • jimintexas says:

If you really think Joe apologizing to the public will be enough, you are the one with their head in the sand. There is compelling evidence that differs.

The biggest issue where you and I disagree is that this appears personal to you that you are owed something by Joe. Joe owes/owed something to his team mates and OU. This judging him until he meets your standard is not good for him, the football team, OU, or the public. You need to take the focus off you

        • RocketCitySooner says:

We’re not dealing with the “public”. The media won’t be satisfied with anything less than Mixon being barred from football.

          • Payton Glen Guthrie says:

And honestly he shouldn’t be on the team. But he is.
So it’s an interesting dynamic. OU is doing a really good job of slowing him into the light, but at some point he will need to speak. If you can’t see that then I don’t know what you are looking at.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

            And honestly he shouldn’t? lol

At least now I know what your agenda is. Same as the media.

          • Payton Glen Guthrie says:

No agenda. I think it’s similar to Greg Hardy.
We now know, due to Hardy speaking to the media, that he is a horrible human.
I think Mixon is a much better person and will perform well.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

If MIxon is a better person, than why shouldn’t he be at OU? I think Bob has made it clear that depending on the situation, and how the player reacts, and their level of remorse and wanting to fix it and do better, he’ll give them another chance. He did it with Dusty, and that turned out great. He did it with Green-Beckham(sp), and other than him not ever playing in a game for OU, that worked out. He cut Jarboe loose, and the kid continued getting in trouble.

I trust Bob on this stuff until he gives me a reason not to.

          • Payton Glen Guthrie says:

Because mistakes can cost you a lot in life. He is lucky that Bob took the time with he that he did. There are a lot of levels to this.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

It’s really not that complicated. And I’m fairly certain Mixon would have ended up being okay had Bob sent him on his way. I’ve never gotten the feeling Mixon is a bad kid, in any way, just a bad situation that night. Had Bob cut him loose, Mixon would be playing ball and doing just fine somewhere else, most likely.

          • Payton Glen Guthrie says:

Without a doubt. We’ve seen him perform well. I’ve seen him react great with fans after games. That’s why I think he should speak (when he is ready. This stuff of never speaking is stupid) because I think he will prove a lot of people wrong.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

Mistakes can cost a lot in life, especially when there are those out there who insist people be placed in the public square then beaten, cussed, kicked and tore down for their mistakes until there’s nothing left of their lives. People make mistakes and they typically pay for their mistakes and thru their conscience are independently made to feel great remorse. Even if you’re not there to cast stones and drink of his blood, he’s paying for his sins, so get TF over yourself and move on.

          • BleedCrimson says:

And a single tree is a forest.

          • SamSooner says:

No he doesn’t. He doesn’t owe us anything.

I’m not saying this as an OU fan. I care about how this could hurt Joe, the kid, not football player.

          • BleedCrimson says:

I was expecting that shoe to fall. Good grief.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

Is there anything Mixon could say that would change your belief that he should not be on the team?

          • Malicong says:

A little late to this conversation but could you explain why he shouldn’t be on the team? Should he have been banned from football forever in your eyes? Why can’t a second chance happen at OU? If he truely “needs to get help” or “needs to show contrition” why not make him do it at the place where he evendentally did the worst thing a human could possibly do? You, like the media, are wanting to make a much bigger deal out of something than it really was. He wasn’t the only person in the wrong that night. He has never done anything else in his college career that exhibits a pattern of bad behavior. Joe Mixon is nothing like Winston. JW consistantly made the wrong decision time after time. Mixon has made ONE MISTAKE the media and a few people want a public trial.
It is not about Mixon needing to speak, it about you wanting him to fall to his knees and beg you for forgiveness. He doesn’t need to address this at all with the media or fans, ever. The only people he needed to address it with are his teammates, his coaches, the legal system, and the other person involved. That’s it.

          • Bill Holder says:

I would suggest then that you refrain from watching Sooner football until he is gone (if you even do watch ) until he is gone. Go find you another team to follow. I might suggest you hire some private firm to investigate the team before you follow them, just to make sure they are clean enough for you.

          • Dick Bump says:

Everyone loves a good scandal. The media will write about it and bring it up as long as people will read about it . Newspapers are hurting for readership. They are raising the individual price of subscriptions to cover the declining number of subscriptions. Doesn’t look like that plan is going to be too successful in the long run.

        • Partly agree. However, you are talking about an 18 year old inexperienced with the press. There is also a good chance he will answer a question in a manner that will just feed the frenzy. Let him mature some and put some water under the bridge before you throw him before the sharks.

        • SamSooner says:

No. Not a good idea. There are very few people who have sufficient grace to forgive. I have not seen that grace often enough, especially with the local media.

Jenni Carlson will be the person stalking Mixon, trying to give his shadow back to him. “Hey, Joe,” she’s likely to say, “you dropped something. Here you go.”

        • Bill Holder says:

He owes none of the public an apology. He didn’t do anything to you or I. If there is civil litigation pending he can’t afford to say anything. That doesn’t mean I in any way agree with his actions, but it’s none of my business. Coach Stoops knows everything about the situation and took what he considers appropriate action. Leave it alone….none of your business.

      • Cav66 says:

Public contrition is a tired ritual that serves no purpose other than getting some online hits and provides the PC police the opportunity to judge the efficacy of the mea culpa. Mixon would do well to steer clear of the media for as long as possible, keep his nose clean, and let his play do his talking. Those who have already decided that he doesn’t deserve another chance aren’t changing their minds; so what is the point?

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t. The media is going to ask him questions that I don’t think he needs to answer, and they aren’t going to ask them in a polite way. Absolutely nothing good can come from Mixon being made available to the media. I’d wait until after the season, if at all, to let him speak to them.

    • SamSooner says:

I wouldn’t mind. I like to hear what our players have to say.

However, for his sake, I don’t want to expose him to the media. They, the media, are going to be gutless: they will ask him about that incident in some way or form. There is always some a** out there who wants to remind this kid of what they don’t want him to be by always reminding him of what he did.

I would like to spare Joe of always feeling the need to apologize.

If the media wants to be a bulldog about something, let them chase the banks about the mortgage crisis and the countless other selfish organizations that have taken advantage of poor people and who have stolen so much money from those who need it.

They can do whatever they want to do but let this young man continue to rebuild, repair, and rebrand his image.

    • BoomerDave says:

Mixon should never, and will never speak of the events that took place at Pickerman’s that night so long as he is under the threat of civil litigation. The victim hired an attorney who said she was hired to examine the case and look into possible civil litigation. Until the statute of limitations has expired or the civil case is concluded, the most Mixon should offer is an apology to his university, his teammates, his coaches and his fans. Then only talk about football from that point forward.

      • SamSooner says:

That’s my thing: the media knows this. They care more about a story than what this means to Joe, good or bad.

      • Dwebb_96 says:

I agree with this. As a fan, what happens to to player off of the field is between the player(s), coaches and whomever maybe involved. Frankly, I feel that it none of my business. I respect the fact that some may not feel that way, but I have no desire to rehash past incidents. Saying that, I am really happy for Mixon and Perine and the game they played on Saturday. Here’s hoping they repeat that performance many more times.

    • Jordan Esco says:

I’m interested in hearing the rationale as to how it makes sense.

      • Payton Glen Guthrie says:

I’ve typed out some stuff in this thread that shows my thought process.
Some of the people are here are acting like FSU fans with Winston right now.

        • SamSooner says:

And just like your comments on this board, your thoughts are scattered. I’m not going to sift through it to make sense of your holier-than-thou attitude.

          • Payton Glen Guthrie says:

It’s mainly because I’m a human with a varied thought process on a complicated situation.

    • EasTex says:

Indeed, it does appear you are the only one who would.

    • Bart Young says:

The local media’s reaction to not having access to Mixon just confirms why Stoops is right in not allowing them access. He and everyone associated know they just want to dredge it all up and sensationalize is all over again to generate controversy and sell papers or web-page hits. I don’t see any reason to allow them to use him for this purpose.

  • OUhound says:

Hope Russell is 100% for our game. I want us to win that sucker with Baylor at their full strength…no excuses!!!

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I will take a win period. Injuries are part of the game. No less of a victory with their backup in. In the committee’s eye a W is a W is a W.

    • Soonerfan24 says:

FWIW, a friend of a friend (of a friend) of mine is a grad assistant at Baylor and he said that the entire staff expects Russell to miss the rest of the year. Don’t quote me on that obviously, but it certainly doesn’t sound like good news will be coming for Russell and Baylor

    • CS says:

Its also not good in other ways, since they might drop few more games, which will not our matchup a top10 one, this could hurt us in the poff committee’s eye too.
      1. Praying that he recovers
      2. Praying that he recovers fast.

    • BleedCrimson says:

I am more concerned with his life after the next play. It would seem devastating to an 18 year old kid not to play, but I can only imagine what it would be like for him if he did play and there were further injuries.

  • Zack says:

    No walking dead news Jordan?

    • Birddawg says:

There is no news… carry on! 🙂

    • Jordan Esco says:

I haven’t watched it yet and really didn’t appreciate all the a-holes on Twitter last night w/ the spoilers.

      • SamSooner says:

Max, my son, can’t get enough. I keep threatening him that he will lose his phone if he isn’t studying. I check his grades, online, daily.

You knew there would be spoilers online. It was well on its way to being one of the best episodes…

Is the Marcus Green injury serious?

  • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Very good job on both sides of the ball, were there mistakes sure there were. But all in all, the mistakes are being worked out from week to week. Which should give us all something to smile about. And in case you already did not know it. “Its always a great day to be a SOONER”!!!

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

    On to KU!

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Looking for a team to continue to be motivated. No let downs, no uninspired football. One week at a time. I want to see continued good OL play and the defense to limit points. Like to get Dede and Shep the ball, and run our backs, while throwing bubbles and hitting the rbs on screens, wheel routes.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

I liked the 2 back sets because it gives Mayfield another guy to pickup blitzes. They need to run the ball vs the better teams to score TDs in the RZ so I like having both of those guys on the field together.

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Yep, not sure what I’m going to wear to the game. Supposed to be cold and rainy. I do not mind the cold, but combine it with the rain and YUCK!

      • EasTex says:

It’s KU and it will be raining?
Wear your Perine jersey with a clear rain poncho. 🙂

        • Golfluvr13 says:

I have a Royals poncho and my wife said we can wear those. I told her that NO BLUE will be visible on us for the game. She laughed, but I was dead serious. I will have my OU jersey on, and on top of whatever I wear underneath to stay dry.

          • DrewChubbs says:

Invert a Glad trash bag (33 gallon size, unless you’re a little fella), cut one hole on the bottom (now top) seam large enough to fit your head through, and one hole on each side seam, approximately where the arms can poke through. Insert head and arms into appropriate holes. tape/tuck/fold slack. Voila, you now have a single use, utility poncho to wear under your game day gear!

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I have done that many, many times. Especially when my kids played soccer when they were very little.

      • BleedCrimson says:

Something familiar about KU and rain.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Where are the commits at? It would be nice to see a few.

  • leatherneck1061 says:

The word is already out on Seth Russell. His neck is broken. His season is over. Maybe someone already reported that here and I missed it. Anyway, that’s not good for us I don’t think. A 1-loss B12 champ (assuming we can win out) whose toughest opponent is now without their starting qb will likely be seen as having a weaker resume than other league champs.

    • Malicong says:

I disagree. Even with Baylor possibly taking a small step back (Stidham is pretty good himself), OU would still have wins over 3 teams that went into November undefeated and respected SEC team. The committee isn’t going to punish the entire Big XII because of one injury. It doesn’t really change anything IMO.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Prayers for a speedy recovery. That’s a scary injury.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

If OU goes 11-1 we will be in. This OU sir. Not TCU/Baylor. Besides, which team will have beaten three top 15 teams in a row by then? Our resume would be unequaled this year. ESPN has continued to try and put the Big 12 on the outside. Why? Only conference with two teams in top 3. No sir. It won’t happen again. If it does, I will quit following this game.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

their FPI has BU #1, OU#2 and TCU #3…it’s funny they didn’t use that on Championship drive last night

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Love it. Missed that. Other than Herbie and a couple of others, there seems to be an agenda to exclude the Big 12 from the playoff. ESPN mentions the “Big 12 doesn’t play defense” or we don’t have a title game and on that final Saturday it’ll be out of sight out of mind. If the committee is so narrow-minded to forget that (hypothetical) OU just won three straight games against top 12 opponents, then we ought to dump the committee.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yep, Luginbill and Herbie are talking up OU and Brad Edwards had them as the best possible 1 loss team to make it last night

        • Walter Sobcek says:

Noticed that, too. They only bring up the FPI when it’s to the sec’s advantage.

      • Scott says:

The playoff committee will put a Big 12 team In the playoff

      • Walter Sobcek says:

What’s quite funny is that while espn’s talking heads continue to flog the Big 12, the network’s own invented FPI has Baylor, TCU and OU as the TOP 3 teams! Bit of a dilemma for the boys in Bristol.

      • leatherneck1061 says:

I hope you’re right of course, but I think you underestimate how much weight they are putting on conference championship games. The Big 12 is just not getting the respect it should. A 1-loss Big 12 champ will be competing against probably an undefeated Ohio State, an undefeated Clemson (likely), the SEC champ (undefeated LSU or maybe Alabama), 11-1 Notre Dame, and the Pac 12 champ. We have to beat out 2 of those to get in. And if they do succeed in locking us out I may join you in that boycott.

    • EasTex says:

Tough break for the young man, but that is baylor’s problem not OU’s.
OU just needs to win out. There are so many other factors and games in the FCS yet to come predicting now what the committee will decide is fruitless.

    • Tipman says:

      Link?

    • Bill Deblassio says:

If he has a hair-line fracture a spinous process in the lower cervical, theoretically he could be back in a couple of weeks..

    • Jordan Esco says:

Last I saw he was supposed to be re-evaluated today or later in the week. Haven’t seen anything definitive as to his status and just double checked to make sure, still nothing. You got a link to something I’m not seeing?

    • Golfluvr13 says:

If Oswho is undefeated when OU beats them, the Sooners are in. If OU only has the one loss.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Given what happened last year, the committee would be very hard-pressed to leave out a name-brand team like OU if the Sooners win out.

    • leatherneck1061 says:

Sorry guys, I’ve been doing stuff with the family all day and just got back on to check. The first place I saw the story this morning was at collegefootballnews.com. But here’s a link that says it’s official.

    • leatherneck1061 says:

Well I’m trying, but it won’t let me add the link on here. ????

  • Okie403 says:

Listening/reading about all the hubbub regarding Mixon makes me think that handling problem children, dealing with the crazy media, putting up with the arm chair QBs and the coach wannabes are what Coach Stoops gets paid his big dollar salary for. if he could just coach the good young men on this team, he might do it for next to nothing …. Maybe just enuff to pay the mtge! 😉

  • Mike Reed says:

RECRUITING NOTE:….Spoke to a co-worker this morning who is a relative of OL Rowdy Frederick (Broken Arrow, OK). They said OU called Rowdy over the weekend inquiring how solid his Tulsa commitment is and would he reconsider if OU offered. Rowdy told them to “Make me offer”.

  • Fear The Magic says:

I feel really bad for Russell and pray for his swift recovery.
That being said I cant help but see the irony that it was less than a year ago that his teammate Mr Oakman almost broke our QBs neck….and not by accident.
    Baylor Karma?

  • Walter Sobcek says:

I feel much better about OU’s receivers after watching the professional receivers for the Eagles drop so many of Bradford’s passes last night. It was cringe-inducing.

    • Malicong says:

It was terrible. Several of them right in the hands. Bradford hasn’t been playing great, but he hasn’t been playing as bad as the media make it out to be. They have very little at WR and the O-line is struggling.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

Absolutely. I don’t believe I have ever seen so many drops in an NFL game before. It was a comedy of errors. And you’re right- Sam was running for his life most of the time, again. How could a Chip Kelly team have so many inadequate receivers? They rarely get open, and drop the ball when they do. Feel bad for Bradford and Murray, too,

        • tfb_fortyseven says:

There’s a vocal contingent at BleedingGreenNation who just cannot stand Sammy. They don’t want him there, and they’re all for putting in Sanchez, immediately. It makes one think: What part of WR/TEs dropping passes, O-line not blocking well, little run game to relieve the pressure, and allowing Sammy to get beat up … don’t you understand? I cannot think of any QB who can possibly thrive under such deplorable conditions. He’s such a likeable guy, and to watch him get mauled both on and off the field, is a travesty.

          • DrewChubbs says:

To put this in perspective, most of those same people hated the fact that Donovan McNabb was drafted and started for a few years before they finally, kinda-sorta, warmed up to him. The only thing that would satisfy them is to draft some magical QB that looks good on paper, has all the tools, and has done nothing but win. That or they can let a QB like Sammy B. earn their respect (if Chip can stay pointing in one direction long enough).

          • Daddy R says:

Yea, this is upsetting to me to watch. Luckily, it seems he has a coach who understands this, regardless of what the Philly fans and the national media think. They have been ripping Sam, and his receivers drop passes like its nobody’s business. The drop from Huff in the endzone last night was just plain ridiculous. Can’t get much better throw, thats for sure. And on top of everything else you mentioned, he is still getting used to playing again, and learning a pretty complicated playbook. Its his first year! I hope Chip stays steadfast in his support of Sam..

  • Skip Sanders says:

Playoff Scenario for Sooners: IF we win out, our ability to make playoffs comes down to Notre Dame AND Stanford MUST both end up with 2 losses. They are only teams which stand in way. (ACC-Clemson, SEC-Bama or LSU or Florida, and Big Ten-Mich St. or Ohio St).

  • John Garner says:

Seth Russell out, Jarrett Stidham in. I’m not so sure that Baylor didn’t get better. Stidham is mobile.
