OU Football | More Spring Roster Updates

Image via OU Football Facebook

A couple weeks ago OU finally updated their spring roster to include the enrollees and incoming class, but they failed to provide any updates as to the players’ heights and weight. However, they remedied that on Monday afternoon. So I figured we’d run through some of those that stuck out real quick, as it’s one of the very few insights to the program we’re allowed to track the progress/work put in during the offseason.

*1 LB Dominique Alexander: IS – 6’0″ 229, WAS – 6’0″ 227 (+2, not a ton of weight added)
*68 G Jonathan Alvarez: IS – 6’3″ 310, WAS – 6’3″ 316 (-6)
*81 WR/TE Mark Andrews: IS – 6’6″ 247, WAS – 6’6″ 236 (+11, big ol’ boy)
*27 CB Dakota Austin: IS – 5’11” 160, WAS – 5’11” 164 (-4, weight going the wrong way)
*18 LB Curtis Bolton: IS – 6’2″ 229, WAS – 6’2″ 210 (+19, obviously put in a ton of work to add some good weight)

*25 RB Joe Mixon: IS – 6’2″ 217, WAS – 6’2″ 211 (+6)
*5 WR Durron Neal: IS – 5’11” 195, WAS – 5’11” 201 (-6)

*55 OT Josiah St. John: IS – 6’6″ 309, WAS – 6’6″ 300 (+9)
*19 LB Eric Striker: IS – 6’0 223, WAS – 6’0 221 (+2)
*91 DE Charles Tapper: IS – 6’4″ 283, WAS – 6’4″ 281 (+2, would have expected this to be going the other way)

  • Lesslie Stanford says:

Umm Darlington would have lost weight if your input is correct.

  • Wyatt Williams says:

Has Parker changed his number to 10? I believe that is him in the picture.

  • Reuben63 says:

i just looked over on OU’s roster. Perine Lost weight. He’s down 6 lbs . maybe trying to get a lil bit quicker.

  • Paul Warfield says:

Some of those offensive linemen are far too heavy. You do not see many Of the top offensive. lineman come out in the draft, any given year, and weigh more than 320 pounds. When you get back having you reach a point of diminishing returns. At the end of the day it is about being athletic and being able to move, and for the big guys being able to bend and move.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

Did you see how tall they were? Remember Phil Loadholdt and Duke Robinson? Both 350

      • Paul Warfield says:

Yes sir. And both struggled, or in Phil’s case still do, with quicker more athletic defenders. I remember Orakpo of Texas changing Oklahoma’s entire gameplan because how much big Phil struggled with him. Florida was very much the same story as their athletic front neutralized Oklahoma as they harassed Sam all night.

Diminishing returns being that heavy. I promise they would both move better and bend better around 320 pounds. And they wouldn’t lose any strength.

        • Zack says:

Youre right about them being around 320 going into the draft but keep in mind those are the very best linemen each year and they are 22-23 years old. Where most of the kids on this roster are 19-20. So they haven’t been able to really put on muscle even though they’re still large human beings.

          • Paul Warfield says:

Really all the more reason they do not need to be carrying that amount of bad weight on their frames.

        • hemisooner says:

I agree. I want them big but not too big were they cant move and struggle in space.

        • Lane Gilstrap says:

Loadholdt didn’t struggle too much or he wouldn’t have been starting for the Vikings.

          • Jed says:

Yeah, I was going to observe that being in his seventh (?) season in the pros, he’s clearly got something going right.

        • Sooner 76 says:

It is true that Load and Duke got owned by Florida on the short yardage plays. Wilson kept running over their side and it got stuffed every time. Cost us the game, IMO.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Should have ran to Trent’s side. I mean Chris Brown was gaining yardage that way as well.

        • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Being 6’8″ will give you problems against smaller players. And being lighter wouldn’t have made Phil be able to run a 4.7 like Brian. A lot of people struggled against Brian.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

It wasn’t the whole line against Florida. It was Duke Robinson getting his lunch and dinner handed to him. He also cost us a first and goal
inside the 10 with a hold.

          • William Ryan says:

It was the right guard that cost us on 4th and goal getting totally blown off the ball alas brown getting stuff for a loss

  • JB says:

I disagree that any skll position (CB & WR) we have needs to gain weight; they need to lose weight for speed’s sake. Jalen Saunders was in the 165 lb range, didn’t hinder his game any. Seeing Austin & Sanchez losing 4-5 lbs is a good sign to me. I’d also like to see our big WRs (Smallwood, Mead, Todd) slim up a little. I do take it as a good sign that Meier and Andrews bulked up if they’re going to play the TE position. I also don’t know if it’s a good sign that Orlando Brown has put on 15 lbs. He’s getting into the too heavy to move range…

    • Sooner Ray says:

I don’t put a lot of stock in a spring weight. Summer workouts and fall camp will see those numbers move.

      • Boom says:

Agreed. Okie summers have a way of losing a little weight from the big boys.

      • JD says:

I don’t mind seeing the backer weight gains shown so maybe a few will quit freaking out and complain about us using safeties …we’re gonna be pretty salty by the 16 season if not this coming season

    • Defend Colfax says:

Mead is anything but big. Slim him up a little and he is no longer a football player.

      • Coach K says:

Slim him up and he isn’t even a basketball player like he was planning on being. haha

    • Jdizzle says:

The thing about being tall and slender is, if you get hit by a mighty gust of wind, you will blow over! Haha! Mead is too small. He needs to be around 200, at least. Randy Moss may be the most athletic receiver ever, and he was 210, and 2 inches shorter than Mead. And Mead will not be a Randy Moss (no one will)! But he needs some size in order to take hits.

      • Coach K says:

Jeff won’t be able to gain the weight that fast. You don’t want a skill player gaining 30 pounds in less than one year. That is just asking for knee issues.

He is getting there slowly. He is a long kid, his wingspan is close to 7 feet long so it will take him longer to bulk up. He lost body fat during the season and is just now starting to be able to add weight to his frame.

It was the same with Meier, he didn’t gain a pound during his first summer at OU but his body fat percentage went down a ton. He is now close to or at 250.

    • hemisooner says:

Durron needed to lose some weight.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Being light doesn’t necessarily make one faster.

      • Andarakes says:

On point… see Charles Tapper (4.57) and Charles Walker (4.67), according to Mongomery’s tweets this offseason. I believe our starting safety was 4.59 at 180 lbs…

    • Sooner 76 says:

Jordan Thomas needed to gain some weight, so he can play bump and run; he was too light to do it last year.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

    *71 OT Bobby Evans: IS – 6’5″ 288, WAS – 6’5″ 270 (+18, young buck bulking up)
    *26 LB Jordan Evans: IS – 6’3″ 242, WAS – 6’3″ 223 (+19, now that’s what I’m talking about)
    *9 LB Tay Evans: IS – 6’2″ 235, WAS – 6’2″ 221 (+14, again, good sign here)

Love these numbers. What about Bolton?

  • Boom says:

For those that say we have the lightest LB’s, here you go.

    McGinnis,Arthur LB 6-2 225 Fr. DeBerry,Ricky LB 6-2 240 Fr
    9 Evans, Tay LB 6-2 235 RFr. 18 Bolton Curtis LB 6-2 229 RFr.
    82 Okoronkwo,Ogbonnia LB 6-1 237 RSo.
    1 Alexander,Dominique LB 6-0 229 Jr. 26 Evans,Jordan LB 6-3 242 Jr.
    23 Bond,Devante LB 6-1 236 Sr. 40 Lindley,P.L. LB 6-2 267 RSr.
    19 Striker,Eric LB 6-0 223 Sr

    • Sooner 76 says:

Yes, it’s great news that the LBers are getting bigger and the new signees are big guys as well. Only negative is Dom’s weight, which is another reason I think that Shannon’s return will cost him his spot instead of Evans’ spot.

      • JD says:

Dom had or is having wrist surgery else I’m sure he’d have more gain as well…I think Tay and for sure Bolton are gonna really push as well

  • Will Narramore says:

Darlington pushing 300 is big. He was a little small last year and got pushed around a little. Love to see Jordan Evans and Bolton bulking up. Would like to see Sanchez around 185 so he doesn’t get bullied as much.

    • akryan says:

That’s what I was thinking too. It’s amazing that 285 is undersized in college these days, but it is. So, it’s good to see him put on some (hopefully good) weight.

  • Wilson says:

Did I miss the practice updates?

  • JD says:

Forgot who I was arguing with about the backers and in particular JEvans weight gains but here you go….

  • soonerfan60 says:

OL will slim down quite a bit due to getting out and actually practicing. Moving around and runnin gin pads will make them trimmer.

Dom alexander was gaining some weigt but its hard to really add muscle when you cant lift due to wrist injury and then having to have surgery on it.

    • Doobie74OU says:

Got to agree. Hard to believe OL going to play that big playing at a uptempo 85-95 plays a game pace!

  • Chris White says:

These are good numbers. Trevor looks huge in pictures and Semaje doesn’t look like he dropped a pound. Mixon wants to be around 220 and shave 0.1 off his 40 which he’s on his way to doing. Michiah adding weight is awesome since I expect him to be. Big slot target and deep threat and needs the weight for punt return (hopefully)

  • rphokc says:

…….mcnamara transf to usc………..hope he succeeds

    • akryan says:

Yeah, good for him. He still has his redshirt, so the one year wait isn’t that big a deal. He’ll be closer to home too. It’s too bad that Heupel just never wanted to integrate the TE into the game. He had a great skill set for a receiving TE.

  • Sooner Redzone says:

Well those are all worthless. Rivals has Baker 2 inches shorter than Trevor but this says he is 6.2. Then Daimler is 7 feet. LOL it shows Mayfield heavier than Knight. LOL. Knight is up to 218

  • blaster1371 says:

    Thanks Jordan

  • Brad Warren says:

All I care about is the bottom line. Wins. Sweet 16 in hoops has definitely helped in healing the huge wound inflicted from football season.

  • OU_Sooners says:

Think Perine dropped weight to become quicker. Not faster, quicker.

    • Coach K says:

It would help with both. He will be quicker and faster if he lost 6 pounds as he will have toned up also. OU is big on % now with new coaches.

  • Sooner Redzone says:

Perine reminds me so much of Marshawn Lynch. He really has good anticipation and feel for spaces. In that regard he reminds me of Emmitt Smith.

  • WilliamJack says:

Cody Thomas? He looks like he’s put on weight. I didn’t see him listed.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

WOW…there is some impressive gains going on. Yeah, they may slim down a bit once the season starts but overall thier weight gain consist of working out, proper eating and having a year round nutritionist.

Unlike my technique which is lack of any kind of exercise, lots of beer, and a desk job.
