Some Thoughts On OU vs. Louisiana-Monroe

Image via NewsOK

Not that I’m telling any of you something you didn’t already know, but there were never going to be any substantial takeaways from this game considering the level of competition. That said, it’s also not as if there are zero positives to come out of what proved to be the expected one-sided affair.

* Again no real surprise considering the opponent but coming off that Houston game and his issues holding on to the ball too long, it was nice to see the old Baker Mayfield again.

* I will never understand how a guy can be 6’5″ 250 and continually get as WIDE open as Mark Andrews does. But whatever you’re doing, Mark, please keep doing it!

* Granted it’s just two games into the season, but it sure looks more and more to me that Joe Mixon is really starting to come into his own. Both running the ball — some of his cuts Saturday night were just ridiculous — and how easy he makes it look catching the ball in space.

Also, my goodness does he ever look like a dynamic punt returner. I’m completely fine putting him back there, especially since it would appear he’s not going to return kickoffs (assuming his absence there Saturday night was any indicator).

I’d encourage OU fans to take it all in now, because if he keeps this up it’s hard for me to see him not leaving early for the NFL.

* While they didn’t connect every time, it seemed to me like Mayfield was really looking for AD Miller multiple times throughout the first half, especially on throws down the field. Which, in my opinion, is a very good thing.

* That third quarter was pretty ugly for the Austin Kendall led OU offense, although that probably shouldn’t have come as that big a surprise considering it was his first college game ever. So it was all the more encouraging to see Kendall bounce back in that fourth quarter and finish strong, probably highlighted by that perfect fade to Miller in the end zone.

* Also a solid debut for true freshman running back Abdul Adams, who finished with a quality stat line of 18 rushes for 91 yards (5.1 ypc) against a ULM defense, at least for that third quarter, who didn’t have much reason to respect the pass.

* Definitely not prepared to go so far as to say he would have been the difference maker a week ago, but how Mykel Jones didn’t see the field against Houston I’ll never know.

Man, did he ever show some exciting potential on Saturday night.

* Had to have been a super cool moment for walk-on Nick Basquine to get his first ever reception on a 62-yard pass-and catch.

* GET NEVILLE GALLIMORE ON THE FIELD MORE.

* Jeffrey Mead on punt returns was, um, different. Just odd to see a guy that big back there, or at least it was for me.

* Liked what we saw from both Kapri Doucet and Caleb Kelly. Thought the former got himself out of position a couple times being too aggressive on his pass rush and getting to far up field, but nothing to be overly alarmed about.

* Didn’t expect to really find anything out about the corners in this one and that proved to be the case. Yes, there was that one bust. But if Bob Stoops’ sideline a$$-chewing was any indicator that appeared to be on the safety, Will Sunderland, more so than it was Parrish Cobb.

Was good to see Michiah Quick actually out there on the defensive side of the ball, but I don’t recall anything truly standing out though maybe I missed it.

* I thought kickoffs were kind of hit and miss. Austin Seibert hit a couple of outstanding ones, into what I was led to believe was a pretty strong wind, well into the end zone. While some others, unfortunately, came up well short.

Did drill his only field goal attempt on the night, though, so that was nice.

Alright, that’s about all I’ve got. What say you?

It’s nice to wake up the next morning after a Sooner win.

  • Okie403 says:

Boomer. Take the win and learn Hopefully no serious injuries. Stadium looked great. Actually looked ‘smaller’…

Thx for all you TFB do and appreciate those that comment!

  • Scott says:

I was really happy to see the young guys play. Deberry , Gallimore , Kelly , Bledsoe really stood out IMO on the Defense. Also worthing noting is that the upperclassmen were so excited to see the young studs go out play ( Baker reaction to Kendalls first career touchdown ).

  • OUn8v says:

Help me out, please. Why doesn’t OU get all of their games televised, when other teams will be, regardless of the level of competition? I don’t understand that.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

I think OU contractually is guaranteed 1 PPV game per year, and the networks have to decide which game they’re willing to give up. So naturally, they give up the lousiest one.

  • OUn8v says:

I’ve been waiting to hear the names Gallimore, Kelly, and DeBerry. I was smiling ear-to-ear last night when T Row and Lehman talked about how well they were doing. Of course, I was simply glad hearing that so many of the young kids were on the field.

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

More Mykel Jones, please. And Gallimore. And Kelly.

    • Cedarsooner says:

And less Mead the young man just doesn’t seemed that inspired to fight to catch the ball. I want to see the guys who see the ball in the air and say to themselves that m….. F…..r is mine.

      • Super Keith says:

Agree 100%. I really hope Mead can develop into the kind of receiver he can be, but until then I think he needs to see less time.

    • CcrBoomer says:

And Bledsoe,Motley,Beal the entire 2nd unit looked really good for Fr and Rfr. Bledsoe looked like he might be even faster than Tapper if that is possible

      • Super Keith says:

I think you’re correct. I had no idea that Bledsoe had that kind of speed. On at least two occasions, he tracked down plays on the opposite side of the field. For a defensive lineman, that’s fast!

      • Fear The Magic says:

I was impressed with Doucet. He can really cover some ground.

    • Super Keith says:

Absolutely. I hate speaking negative of our players, but I’m starting to get the feeling that Mead just hasn’t developed into “the guy” we need him to be, so until he does let’s rotate in more guys that can make plays (including Jones!).

  • Mark_in_VA says:

If I were able to pick the chess pieces, my 4 receiving threats–the guys I want on the field the most, and the most involved in getting the ball–are Andrews, Westbrook, Miller, and Jones. That group looks to be head and shoulders above the rest, although I’d want to give Green a chance to get healthy and on the field to see what he could do.

  • CrimsonNative says:

I didn’t see the game, but I did review the play-by-play on ESPN. Riley, really needs to try and mix up his plays more during the quarter. He calls plays in consistent patterns throughout each quarter, which can make him predictable. For instance: In one quarter, he went, Joe, Samaje, Baker and repeated that pattern the whole drive until we either scored or turned the ball over. If I was a DC, I would pay attention to his play calling patterns.

  • Dusty D Anderson says:

I know it was just ULM, but I was really impressed with the young guys on both sides of the ball. We have some serious play makers on the defensive side that are true freshmen, or redshirt freshmen.

  • Justin Johnston says:

I thought Samia at RG and Bobby at RT was a really good combo. I know it’s ULM but Samia looked more comfortable to me. Gallimore, Romar, and Walker should be the starting 3. I’m still not confident in our other corner but I suppose just give cobb the reps in practice since he is the future. Miller, Dede, Andrews, mykel should be first 4 on the field followed by basquin. Really excited about the future on defense. It’s been awhile since that much talent has been on the field. Add the 17 class to that and it gets me fired up.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Didn’t get to watch our game yet but I bet $5 on central Michigan money line and can’t believe I won! When it looked like Oki state was gonna run the clock out I headed out to the casino to place more bets and when I got there I couldn’t believe wtf happened!!!! Then I threw a nice chunk of change down on the over in our game and I’m glad our young guys let up some scores or I would have been screwed in that one. Sounds as if the first team guys looks good. I saw most of the touchdowns on Twitter but I still want to watch our games. Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday and cheers to a Sooner victory, no matter the opposition!

    • Drew says:

A lot of our 2nd and 3rd team guys did well too. The positions of biggest concern were the backups of OL and safety IMO. As many of us suspected, the DL and LB backups were studs, and Kelly, Gallimore, and Bledsoe (covered an out route as a DE) were very impressive. Safety was kind of a surprise to me, but iirc all 3 ULM scores were due to blown coverages by the safeties. They’ve seen enough time at this point to know better, so slightly concerning there. On O, Jones was obviously the breakout player. #3 is the perfect number for him. Adams and Kendall both did pretty well for their first game, especially considering that the backup OL was in. They . . . did not do well. Mittenmeir specifically needs a lot of work. I expect we’d shift another player over before we’d actually play him in an important game this year.

  • Mark Evans says:

    Stadium: WIN!!
    Video board: WIN!! WIN!!
Austin Kendall: throws a very “pretty” ball with tight spiral. His passes were generally on target and a couple with excellent touch in tight spaces. One deep ball to Miller just missed off the fingertips. We seem to have a viable backup as he looks the part.
Abdul Adams: ran with power and good vision behind the 2’s.
Kapri Doucet: excellent pursuit sideline to sideline
NEVILLE GALLIMORE/CALEB KELLY: both have the the potential to be B12 defensive newcomers of the year. Both are physical specimens (freaks actually) and can run! Reserve a spot for both on future all-conference and All-American lists. Also, enjoy both as they will be leaving early to play on Sundays!
Mykel Jones: Calling it early… he should develop into the next iteration of our “scat-WR” a la Clayton, Broyles, Shep. Excellent hands and y.a.c. ability.
Ricky DeBerry: will be a good one, played within himself and the system.
Amani Bledsoe: HUGE and will get “huge-er” under Schmitty. Shades of Grissom and Tapper!
Cobb/Quick: both saw plenty of PT but were underwhelming. Assuming they will be the latest victims of the Mike Stoops “system” of playing with an impossible cushion. It appears MS has zero confidence to allow them to press cover and jam receivers at the LOS. Underneath throws will be available for the taking all season it appears to this observer. I counted an 8 yard cushion of virtually every play and on at least one play I saw a 12 yard cushion! Can’t make this stuff up. No Mbanasor left me SMH.
Competition notwithstanding, I liked what I saw from OUr newcomers. Lots of talent to develop going forward!

    • SoonerfanTU says:

It has been reported, multiple times, that our corners get to choose how much cushion to give, and whether to jam at the LOS or not.

      • Ura Mazin says:

Maybe that choice should be taken away from them.

        • SoonerSpock says:

I would think Kerry Cooks as assistant DC and defensive backfield coach would make the determination on whether we press cover or not with the CB’s. But then most here want Mike Stoops to be the scapegoat for the defensive shortcomings.

          • Ura Mazin says:

After what’s been seen the last couple of years with the soft coverage, I think most just want improvement, whether that means changes made by Cooks or Mike Stoops or Bob Stoops himself.

      • Mark Evans says:

Hence my point “victims of the Mike Stoops system”…

  • Dusty D Anderson says:

Also, the offensive line looked better. I like Evans at RT and Samia at RG. Speaking of the line, I thought Dalton injured his knee and was expected to miss quite a bit of time…yet he was out there with the second unit.

    • Mark Evans says:

As was Daimler at RT. Thought both were out but glad to see them get PT. Will help add depth that will be needed eventually as the grind wears on. And Wren was over the ball getting some quality reps.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

I hope last night’s line starts next week. They had a good game, and very low to no penalties (with the starting unit).

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

So it sounds like all the freshman I’ve been clamoring for all balled out last night? ????. Sounds like gallimore is a straight hoss and he proved if with quality minutes and same with AD and Mykel. How did the backup safeties look and who were they? Thanks fellas 🙂

    • Scott says:

      Gallimore was legit.

    • Mark Evans says:

Haughton and Sunderland were the backup safeties. Sunderland had a bust that resulted in an easy TD for which he was soundly tongue lashed before he could even get off the field. Both settled down but really not too many plays reached the second level defenders as ULM was ready to get on the bus.

    • SWoods says:

Gallimore is going to be REAL good. Mykel got several touches looked like the next great slot guy. Amani Bledsoe really impressed me. He can fly for a DE, there was a play where he broke off the line into coverage and deflected a pass.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

Sorry if this has already been asked but, can we get some sort of update as far as what’s going on with PJ Mbanasor? Although he had a rough game against Tulsa last season, he didn’t look as horrible as Austin did last week, yet we haven’t seen him since. What gives? If anything, last night should have been a game where he got himself onto the field. Just wondering what could have possibly happened to this kid.

    • Drew says:

I saw PJ on the sideline, and I have to say that, as things stand right now, I can’t imagine him staying another year. I think we played 5 CBs last night, including 2 true freshman, but he didn’t even sniff the field. There has to be something the coaches see in practice that we don’t know about. But in that case, I’m surprised the coaches didn’t push him to transfer. The only thing I can come up with is that they didn’t know they were getting Cobb until the very last minute. But I’m getting the feeling that MS has no intention of putting him on the field.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Thanks for posting the game Jordan, I’ll go watch it real quick 🙂

  • OUhound says:

Hi Jordan. Can’t quite agree with “no takeaways”. Any time that execution improves, meaning at least blocking the right assignments, that’s a lot better. We seemed to get on the right hats much more often this game, with only a few breaks. Also penalties – much better.

  • RBear says:

The positive: game experience for those who had little to none.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

    My thoughts from the game:

Stadium – Excellent. Exceeded my expectations. Board is huge, and really clear. Sound is MUCH clearer as well, though I thought they could have it cranked it a bit higher. Fan plaza area is really cool, though they are going to have to make it easier to get up there for fans. It was hardly used, in part I believe, b/c they made everybody go the “long way” to get there. Concourses are very roomy. Rode the escalator twice, lol. The stadium in general, and especially the SEZ, are going to be noticeably louder. You could tell the couple of times the crowd got into it last night that it will hold sound better now. Should be really noticeable next week. Hate to say it, but seeing the new SEZ stuff makes me want to get the entire stadium upgraded as soon as possible. They are going to have to do something about the board in the NEZ, b/c the awning blocks a lot of views of the big board. From my seats, I can see most of it, but lose the bottom 10% or so. Many fans are worse off than that.

Offense – Looked much better. Baker appeared to take what was coming to him, and not trying to force things. I think we found out who the playmakers are. I’m not saying anything that I don’t believe was already said last night, but I’d put Mead on the bench for a while. I think Westbrook, Andrews, Jones, and Miller, along with Perine and Mixon are our best weapons. Lewis and Baxter can get snaps also. Put Smallwood in for blocking purposes at times. But Jones and Miller both ooze of potential. Tough for me to evaluate the oline from the game. I still don’t think they are run blocking at anything other than an average level. Pass protection seemed solid. I liked what I saw from Kendall. Not perfect, obviously, but he did a lot of good things. Same with Adams. He made a great catch on a tough ball. Basquine looked good as well, just not sure we’ll be able to get him the snaps he might deserve, given out depth at inside receiver.

Defense – Tough to gauge against this level of competition. The starters pitched a shutout for a half, so I’m guessing they graded out pretty well. Still not a fan of Ward, or Tay Evans. There are athletes. There are guys that use their football smarts to make plays. And there are guys like Caleb Kelly who have both. You can just tell that kid has a ton of ability. Hopefully he can find a way onto the field more often. Looked smaller “live” then I was anticipating, but again, so did DeBerry. Gallimore was a beast, would like to see him play more. Bledsoe was active an in on a few plays. Young secondary guys (Sunderland and Haughton) struggled some. I thought Cobb did okay. Probably well enough to get the start next week. How much did Quick play? Secondary doesn’t seem in sync yet. No big busts from the starters, but they aren’t as clean as I’d like them to be.

Ohio State – Big game. I’m cautiously optimistic. The fans were pretty tame last night, in part b/c of the Houston hangover, and in part b/c we were playing ULM. That said, we need to be LOUD next week, and our team needs to start fast. I think we can slow down the Ohio State run game, we’ll just have to avoid the big plays thru the passing game. On offense, I worry about rushing attack, but I think we should be able to throw it. Again, we’ll have to avoid turnovers. I think we’ll see more screen game than we’ve seen these first two weeks maybe, to slow down the Ohio State rush. Should be a good game. I won’t be incredibly upset if we lose and play well, but I also think if we play well, we have a pretty good shot at winning. With all of the recruits at the game, this is a big game for our program, regardless of what we do the rest of the season.

  • Jesse says:

A win this week takes us right back up the latter. I hope our guys are focused in practice and ready for a dog fight Saturday. Here’s to a great Sunday enjoy some NFL. (Finally trying draft kings this year)

As for the game.. GET MILLER AND JONES IN THE GAME MORE!! PLAYMAKERS

    • Scott says:

I may try out draft kings here pretty soon.

      • Jesse says:

i don’t gamble a lot but yanno I like to think of myself as a pretty smart football fan.. (At least that’s what I tell myself) this week was really just for fun to see how I do. I might do a little more research for next week.

  • Gary Robbins says:

For the guys in the know. J. Parker, E. Swenson, Z. Farrar, Jon-M Terry, A. Hardy, C. Sylvie, and L. Roberson (all class of 2016). Have these guys seen the field or are they still at OU?

  • Big Higg says:

I wish Holakyle or Hambone would get on it I wanna see some highlights!

  • KJ1123 says:

Great win, everyone got in on the action. Saw some good things from the young guns. Now back to reality. We will get TORCHED if we don’t play better in the defensive backfied. No two ways about it. The only sure fire way to fix or relieve that pressure is to put alot of pressure on JT Barrett. Deploying some kind of cover 2 may help, not sure if we do already. Better backside play on defense is a must….oh and Obo needs his hand in the dirt 🙂

    • Super Keith says:

We definitely MUST sure up the secondary. The upside is that we aren’t going to see a QB like Ward again (until/unless we make the CFP). Not only is he an incredible athlete, he had the game of his life against us. We’ll face better passers to be sure, but those guys won’t have the added risk of mobility the way Ward did. In other words, if we can get consistency from that other CB spot, we should be okay the rest of the way. Our defensive line appears to have not missed a beat after losing Tapp. And I think we have enough talent on the edges (Obo, Kelly, etc.) to at least keep pressure on the QBs. We just need to lock down the secondary.

    • Okie403 says:

Open post not required for that KJ. God Bless America

Being from NYC I was right in the heart of it and I felt my city implode. I can tell you all that while the twin towers went down the citizens of NYC rose up and stood tall. We were all one that day.
That morning I was actually online talking with a friend of mine as we watched in disbelief as events unfolded. Her brother and uncle were in the North Tower as we spoke and she was beside herself with worry. Luckily they both survived. Countless others did not.
It was a day that F 15s flew over the city. It was a day we’ll always remember.
Saluting all those that fell that day and their families and friends.

    • Bob Edwards says:

9/11 will always have strong emotions for me, but for reason different than most. 9/11 was the day before we were supposed to get on the plane to Russia to adopt three of our kids. Obviously our flight was delayed, but we were on the first commercial flight out of Tulsa after they let the planes start flying again. Then we got stuck in Chicago because the Russians had sent there planes back. We finally got there and the Russians were very understanding (they are used to terrorism). We did get to bring the kids home.
So 9/11 for me is both a tragedy on the national level, but on a personal level reminds me of the time we finally met three of our kids.

      REMEMBERING…

On September 11, 2001 – My oldest Marine was in boot, four days away
from his 21st birthday. I remember that morning, watching the coverage
of the Twin Towers and the Pentagon being hit, how I’d sent him off to
San Diego, a month or so before. How I got to stay with him all the way
to the gate, as the recruits boarded the plane. How I smiled and waved
until he disappeared from sight, and they closed the gate – and how I
cried only then. I watched their plane slowly pull away from the gate,
roll slowly down its path to the runway, where it picked up speed and
lifted them off to their future. I remember thinking, “Lord, bless the
pilot as he carries these young men.” I wrote in my journal later that I
wondered if he knew how special his cargo was, and how important they
were to not only their families, but to our country.

I cried again on September 11th, for so many reasons more.

I thought again of my son and his choice of which I was so proud.
Knowing what this attack would mean for all those recruits struggling to
become Marines. And I mourned for what we had lost that day, and what
we were sure to lose as the days stretched out over an uncertain future.

I watched the newscasters falter as they recounted the first tower
collapse, then the second. I stood rooted to the screen as the reality
of the loss of life washed over not just me, but every decent human
heart who stood watching as well. And as the minutes turned to hours,
the pain did not diminish, but was partnered by an anger that burned so
strong, I wondered if I would survive the flames. I watched the brave
men and women who had gone into those towers to save whoever they could
find, bleed slowly out of the rubble and into their own lost realm, as
they (and we all) realized that many of their brothers were still inside
the ashes and twisted steel. Many of them – and those they fought to
rescue – would never be found. I’d always admired the brave souls who
ran into infernos while others around them ran out. That day, I was
reminded why in a big way. Little did I know that less than a year
later, my second son would emulate not only his brother, but also follow
the path of the rescuers he watched that day. He became a Marine – and a
      firefighter as well.

A friend of mine called that horrible morning, asking “Are you watching
this?” How could I not be watching? A citizen of another country, she
had an opinion that shocked me to the core: “I’m very sorry this
happened, but now you Americans know how the rest of the world feels
when they’ve dealt with terror. Welcome to reality. You aren’t
untouchable.” Dear God, no, we are not.

In the wee hours of September 12th, I sat with shaking hands in front of
my computer, writing my son another birthday message. I’d written him
the week before, a happy message celebrating his coming of age, his
benchmark birthday. I remember I’d decorated it with poorly-drawn
balloons & a cake, and a crude sketch of a mama kissing her boy’s
scrunched-up and blushing face. The paper I’d loaded into the printer
just now was already blotched with tear stains. What a different letter
this was going to be. I still have a copy of it; so does my son – along
with every letter I wrote to him while he was in boot. They’re in the
same cedar chest that holds the Daily Oklahomans covering the Murrah
Building bombing and September 11th. Reminders of what I hope is the
final wake-up call we’ll need, for so many reasons.

The trip to see my oldest son receive his Eagle Globe and Anchor was
markedly different from the last time I’d been to the airport in OKC
only three months before. Gone were the welcoming gestures from smiling
security personnel, offering me the chance to go beyond the boundaries.
My trek was directed by tight-lipped men in uniform, curtailed from
Point A to Point B with no allowance for deviation. I didn’t bat an eye
when I landed at San Diego, and N.G.’s were the order of the day,
complete with M-16s, wearing camo and nervous frowns. For many, it was
comforting and brought on anger at the same time. My fellow passengers
and I remarked at how different flights were now, and how grateful were
were for it. I couldn’t help but wonder what might have been different
if we’d shown more vigilance and wisdom, “before”.

Both my Marines tell me that the other is his “hero”. The younger
admires the first for answering the call of his country prior to
9/11/01, “before” he was needed so much. The older says there’s more
courage and commitment in the choice of his little brother to answer
when he knew much more clearly what that answer might mean – “after”. I
don’t have to tell you who two of my heroes are, do I?

Before. And After. Two words make such a difference in the annals of our country’s history, do they not?

Those sons of bitches brought down more than buildings and planes that
fateful day. They brought down the blinders too many people had on,
shielding their eyes and senses from knowing that Evil is a presence to
be reckoned with in our own midst; nor is Evil just foreign-born. What
every one of us does, every decision we make – as individuals and as a
whole – impacts the world in ways we cannot understand. It’s been said
America lost her innocence again that day; I agree. But I say we gained
an eagle eye of truth, insight and opportunity – what we do with it now
      remains to be seen.

I’ll add two more words that have echoed from the hearts of Americans
living and dead for the last 11 years since. I want you to hold them
with the same reverence I do, say them and mean them…

      NEVER FORGET.

        Post of the year.
        Thank you.

      • Super Keith says:

Thank you for sharing that story (I had not seen that before).

So much changed on September 11, 2001. And some of it was for the better (the connection we all felt to each other, the patriotism, etc.). But I will never forget those that were directly affected and those that have been indirectly affected.

        God Bless America.

  • Jason Vos says:

I feel like Mykel Jones played really well tonight. His jukes are also nice. #Sooners

  • Jason Vos says:

Mykel Jones looking like Sterling Shepard redux

  • j l says:

Bledsoe deserves a mention. Looked physically ready already, which is tough for a freshman on the line. Playmaker.

Might be able to start at corner too. Id like to see him start the game opposite thomas for the KU game, freak someone out.

  • Mizuno45 says:

A bigger story would have been us struggling on offense again, subpar competiton or not, you’ve still got to make quick reads and accurate throws, so really good to see the timing and accuracy back. Interesting points you raise regarding young talent, Gallimore, Jones, Adams, let’s get them in there against better competiton and see what happens starting next weekend.

  • Michael says:

This might have already been stated, but what was the reason Will Johnson did not play yesterday?

    • Jesse says:

Minor injury. Didn’t want to take a chance of him getting hurt further with tOSU next week. At least that’s what I understood it to be. Should be full go this week and ready to go sat.

      • Mark_in_VA says:

I wish they’d had that same philosophy for Samaje. It seems he made it through fine, but I would have been really unhappy if he’d happened to get hurt. Samaje, Joe, and that O-line are going to tell the tale next week, and possibly some of Brooks and Adams.

  • rphokc says:

has anyone seen the bucks play this yr………..was wondering if their o and d lines were dominant although they haven’t played a tough opponent yet

    • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Dline is pretty stout. Their mlb is a beast. They are young in the secondary. Their oline is meh. Tulsa was shutting down their run game until Tulsa’s offense sputtered and their d was left on the field most of the game.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

Tulsa was making their front 7 look pretty bad for much of the first half. I stopped watching before they apparently turned it on, though.

    • DCinAZ says:

Tulsa shoved their Dline around during the entire first half until they threw two pick 6s and had to stop running the ball.

    • Stephen Dale says:

lots of 4& 5* talent along both sides of the LOS for tOSU. Meyer won’t be scared to lead his troops into the stadium Saturday….

      • Rob says:

tOSU looks very marginal at home against Tulsa. Tulsa was god awful. tOSU did nothing fancy at all. I feel much better about the game after watching them play Tulsa.

        • Stephen Dale says:

tOSU was probably playing a very ‘vanilla’ offense and defense so as to show OU little of their schemes.

    • blaster1371 says:

Tulsa hung with them pretty well for the first half. I stopped watching before OSU blew the game open. They have guys on defense that can be playmakers. Lots of ball Hawks in the secondary but their coverage is suspect. Offense is good enough to convert third and any distance so OU will need to be better on defense.

    • Jim Casy says:

It could be argued Tulsa won the first half. The really got hosed on a spot on a crucial 3rd down conversion on offense. The refs actually got the right call on the field and somehow replay moved the ball back.
tOSU is definitely beatable despite the final score of that game.

    • KJ1123 says:

Watching them yesterday I think well match up well up front. We cant have mental breakdowns upfront at all, they’ll exploit it badly.

  • Stephen Dale says:

agree this was a game to ‘work out some kinks’ in the schemes to be used next week..both offense and defense played well the 1st half and the young guys got valuable field time the entire 2nd half–so kudos to coach stoops…agree about Gallimore, Jones, DeBerry, and Caleb. these guys seemed to improve as the game wound down…also thought Kendall settled down and led a couple of impressive drives, considering he is a true frosh QB….not sure he is a better prospect than Shane Buchele though…

    • KJ1123 says:

I think its too early to say whether hes better than Buchele or not. SB is the defacto starter in my opinion. If AK came in and competed to start he could of looked alot different yesterday. And he was playing with the backups unlike SB. I wasnt blown away but I wasnt disappointed.

  • Watch the most die hard 4 year old Sooners fan EVER. My boy Kaden. He loves YouTube video & we made him a channel for this. Boomer. https://youtu.be/SNkPF0wshwQ

  • blaster1371 says:

Gallimore is fast! He ran down a play to the offensive right side that was very reminiscent of Tapper running down the Alabama WR. Romar and Wade make pretty good nose guards but neither can do much beyond the middle of the line.

M Jones needs to get Mead’s snaps. Mead can’t catch anything unless it’s right in his hands and then seems very tentative running with the ball. Jones is a playmaker- made one heck of a diving catch and turned little passes into the flat that I thought he would get smothered into real nice gains. He looked a lot like a young Shep.

Miller is the real deal. He got open often. I will have to go back and watch if ULM played man with safeties over the top or zone.

Samia and Evans are about the same as RTs but for whatever reason the line combo of Brown, Ford, Alvarez , Samia and Evans looked pretty good. Again the level of competition was low but I will need to go back and see how often ULM blitzed and how well OU picked it up.

    • LBS says:

Mead is just a physical mismatch. If the QBs can put it up high he’ll do better. Theyre throwing at his numbers

      • jmshake says:

Since when is hitting a dude in the numbers a bad thing? Its obvious Mead is comfortably outside OU’s top 5 receivers. Mykel Jones is better after 1 game. AD Miller now has almost as many catches as Mead has in 3 years.. I mean I get it. I have a similar affection for Jordan Smallwood. Local kid who has the measurable but just doesn’t produce anything when it really counts.

        • LBS says:

Oh I have no attachment to Mead, honestly I just like the idea of a 6’5 WR being able to highpoint the ball in this conference with such short DBs. But, that said, I think Dahu can displace him. Smallwood is another guy that is just physically imposing as well and never put it together.

      • Rob says:

There was one thrown up high to him and he didn’t raise his arms or jump. So there’s that.

        • LBS says:

True. One thing I did notice is even on his TD catch, he was so mute. You’d think a guy that never catches the ball would be excited.

  • Drew says:

    My thoughts from the game:

The SEZ is awesome. The feel of the new areas, such as the corner landings, is really nice. Has the quality feel of an NFL stadium without being sanitized. New video board is great as well, though I agree with another poster below in that the overhang cuts off the bottom 10% of the screen.

The game itself was fun. Great atmosphere, blow out, and I feel like we got our confidence back. I certainly did. I know some people were saying before the game that a lot of our guys were feeling uninspired. Anybody with an ear in the locker room know if that’s changed?

Was also really happy to see some of the younger guys play the whole 2nd half. Kendall overthrew a couple of balls, but there was a pretty significant north wind. The 2nd string OL also needs a lot of work, though that just means that Adams still got 90 yds almost completely by himself. On defense, Kelly looked smaller than I thought he would. We should try out Bledsoe at corner. Gallimore is a freak. PJ will never see the field again and will transfer after this season (unfortunately IMO, I really liked the kid).

  • blaster1371 says:

Would like to hear more about PJ. Kid should have seen the fileld Saturday if for no other reason than to keep him engaged and working in practice. I thought he should have played instead of Dakota A. Just for the reasons I stated and for use in the future.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Makes you wonder if there might be some other reason he is being held out. It could be something not football related. It’s not like he never played after the Tulsa game last year. There is usually a reason even if we don’t agree with it. Makes you wonder if he might have grade issues or something like that.

      • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

There has to be some underlying reason. For him to not even get in and play in a game like last night is a head scratcher.

    • Zack says:

I would like to know too. Kid was supposed to be the real deal and even lsu wanted him so I don’t think this was an evaluation issue.

  • Boom says:

As I watched all the young players, I thought it was more an audition instead of a game. Some of the young guns will spring board into more playing time based on these auditions. Good timing for the Sooners.

  • Jim Casy says:

Mykel Jones was sure handed and looked quicker by a large margin than any player that was on the field last night. Electric even. I’m not a coach or a scout but when I see a guy that has that ‘something’ I know it pretty quickly. Unless, he is a fumbler or a low football IQ GET HIM THE BALL next week.

Adams earned some playing time. Good running and one fantastic catch that really stood out. The season will not be lost if we lose one of the big 2 for a couple of weeks.

Kendall rallied after a bit of a slow start. He probably wants the deep ball back that he overthrew by 1 foot.
Geno Lewis…I have a good feeling about him, even though I don’t think he registered much on the sheet.
The walk on WR. I like stuff like that. Would like to see more.

Baker, I just don’t think is ever going to be a great deep ball passer and this goes back to last year. He either doesn’t know how or doesn’t trust enough to put air under the ball and let the receiver run under it.
If the throw can be made on a line however, he is as good as they come.

Haven’t had a chance to look over the D again, so no real opinion there yet.

  • Dustin says:

    – Brown, Ford, Alvarez, Samia, Evans works. Stay with that.
    – Joe Mixon is getting better. Bad news for the Big XII.
    – Mark Andrews should be option #1 on every pass play.
    – Mykel Jones is going to be special.
    – Impressed by the overall athleticism of the younger guys.
Especially Gallimore and Bledsoe. Athletic freaks. Bledsoe dropped into coverage. He’s 6’5″ 275. Gallimore was chasing down ball-carriers like a LB. Improved recruiting was obvious when the pups got in.
    – Caleb Kelly plays with passion. When Bob and Mike finally let him loose, LOOK OUT.
    – Secondary has to get better. A unit with three returning starters shouldn’t allow receivers roam free all the time.
    – Not a single kicker is good enough to handle just one duty? Austin shouldn’t have to do it all.

  • Sooner Ray says:

I saw every play of the game but need to watch it again outside the loud bar atmosphere and with audio. Young players showed a lot of promise, starting O line “appeared” better but hard to judge against ULM. Secondary as a whole, yikes. Defense is good but we won’t shut a good team down until a couple holes are patched. Players that played well, young and old have already been mentioned so no need for me to name names. Hoping for a good week of practice and let’s get ready for maybe the biggest test of the season.

  • RDC212 says:

I am really happy to see Samia at right Guard and Bobby Evans at Right tackle . Samia is gonna be a Guard in the NFL. so might as well get him there now and Evans looked good after the first few snaps and started to settle in. even when OU pulled both Samia and Evans when Joe had that big run. Evans blocked two UML guys just threw one into the other. Im really happy to see that group of Offensive line men together.

    • KJ1123 says:

I like it. We were more physical imo. This week Evans will need to step it up. He has a tendency to set slow. tOSU end Tyquan Lewis is a bad dude. He’ll be playing sundays.

      • Drew says:

Hey KJ, you hear anything about the mental state of the team after the game? A couple of people have posted on here saying it was kind of doom and gloom in the locker room, and I was wondering if the game changed any of that?

        • KJ1123 says:

Just the little I heard last night. It was better and upbeat. They were happy with the result, expected the results, but have been preparing for this week since after UH. From what I hear there wasnt alot of celebrating they know how much this week means. Sounds like its all business.

  • OnlyOneBoomer says:

  • Maverick says:

Anyone have an injury update? Was at the game, so I didn’t hear anything. Looked like Charles Walker and DJ Ward were in street clothes in the second half. Those would be two tough ones to lose.

  • hushnpa says:

soo ,, Bledsoe to cornerback ? nickle maybe ?

  • Super Keith says:

I think I was most impressed by the work Caleb Kelly put in yesterday. It’s very evident why he was so highly touted as a recruit. His speed is surprising for a kid his size, and he already appears to be assignment sound for the most part. I could tell he is a true freshman, and still needs to develop, but I have to think he’s going to be a special player for us.

Does anyone remember a couple of weeks ago when Jay Boulware said something to the effect of “I thought Joe (Mixon) was “ready” during spring ball, but he wasn’t. Now that I’ve seen him through camp I can say he is completely “ready” and has finally arrived”? That got me excited, but I also took it with a grain of salt. Through two games, I see what Boulware was saying, and Joe is a different player. He is what I expected him to be when he committed. Great news there.

For years, I’ve heard people complain that Stoops leaves his starters in too long. So, when we came out in the second half I was shocked to see so many back-ups in the game. Then, especially on defense, it almost felt like we took the starting units out too early. Adding back in a couple of key guys (Obo on critical downs) really seemed to settle the unit down, and a lot of guys got some really valuable playing time to develop. Which is all you can ask for when it comes to young guys. All in all, I think we saw a glimpse of the talent we’ve brought in the past year or two, and there are some very good (albeit young and inexperienced) players on the squad.

Austin Kendall looked good to me. It was obvious he was a little hyped the first time he took the field (some overthrows), but I still thought he had a nice presence in the pocket and did an excellent job of going through his reads most of the time. We can only wonder what he would like like with the first team (and I hope we don’t get an answer to that question anytime soon). I may be going a bit too far, but I think Kendall looked better than our back-ups last year, and he’s a true frosh.

Finally, not much to really take away from the game as a whole. However, we needed to see a team determined to put last week behind them and show improvement in just about every area. And we saw just that. I also think this was a much needed ‘warm up’ before facing another ranked opponent. It certainly makes next week interesting, but I seriously believe we’ll beat tOSU if we continue to show what we’re capable of doing and playing much closer to our ability than we did against Houston.

    • JD says:

I love Samjes game but Joe is our best back and will go higher in the draft the way its looking right now

      • Super Keith says:

I have to agree with you. We all love Samaje, and he’s the guy I want with the ball in tough, short yardage situations. But Joe is on a different level this year.

    • Spitting Bull says:

Was at the game last night and was really impressed with Gallimore and excited to see Caleb Kelley do so well. The offense looked good in the first half even with a pretty tame playbook. Would’ve definitely preferred this last night’s game to be in the first week of the season and then play houston and tOSU. Side note has anybody had the font on this site shrink down on their phones? Just happened last week and makes it too hard for me to read.

    • Drew says:

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Thought OU played well and clean when the starters were in. Galimore, Jones, Kelly, stood out. If MS cannot dial up pressure on OSU when they pass, OUr coverage will break down. Against Houston we stopped the run, yesterday 1st team D pitched a shutout. This week need to force Barrett to throw, but need to get pressure when he does. Signed-Captain Obvious. Football is a simple game-attack the QB.

    • bigrackhunter says:

Agree completely, time and time again we sit back in this nickle shell, playing on our heals, by reading and reaction, and giving them the initiative basically. You have to make the qb in a spread option based offence feel uncomfortable, and make his job a living hell. Yeah you have to puck and chose your spots here and there, when to bliz or drop 7. Last weekend our offence was so out of sycn, and mainly due to the fact that the Houston bliz was so effective that we was calling max protect on a few play and they would only bliz 3.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

A win over Ohio State Saturday would be the biggest OU home win since Nebraska in 2000?

The 2008 TT game has to be mentioned, that but they weren’t really on par with that Neb team, or this Ohio State team. We’ve beaten some other big names over the years (Miami, Bama, FSU, Tenn), but none of those teams were very strong during the seasons we beat them.

    • Sooner Ray says:

This game will be huge and an opportunity to gain back some national respect we lost in Houston.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yes, I see your point about national prestige. However, beating that no 2 ranked taco tech team gave us a tie for the conference and allowed the nation to see the overall talent we had which helped get us into the title game. So, for what was at stake the taco tech game was bigger in my view. However, this week could eventually play out in the same way. We win, we move into top 10, erase the Houston loss (at least until there are debates of who should get into the playoff) in the minds of national pundits, restore OU has the favorite in the Big 12 and sets us up to beat TCU and the whorns. But on paper and for what was immediately at stake the 2000 and 08′ games you mentioned were more important.

    • lefty67 says:

Bama in ’02 was actually quite strong. They won the SEC West that year, but were ineligible to go to the CCG due to their probation. In addition to the loss to OU, they only lost by 2 to UGA (SEC champs, & the Tide were w/o their starting QB for that one), & the Iron Bowl, & I think we all know how unpredictable rivalry games can be.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

This is for you KJ. Pretty good stuff.

  • Zach Evans says:

    Jordan. Phillips.

  • bigrackhunter says:

Start Galimore! This kid is a difference maker, and possesses the talent and athleticism we need in the trenches against a team like Buckeyes. Love the “connection” Mayfield has with Miller right now, a big athletic receiver on the outside has been something we’ve lacked since Bester and Reynolds. Really like the way the oline played as a unit, gotta start the best 5, and that was evident clearly on Saturday. Get Jones more mins, heck you can give him all Meads, we need play makers out their that is ready to contribute both consistently and possess big play potential.

    • KJ1123 says:

Neville is good. But he only has one pass rush move and he is not particularly good against the run. And tOSU can run. I would give him heavy rotation, but he wouldnt be my starter yet. He WILL be pretty dang special I think when its all said and done.

      • SamSooner says:

KJ, tOSU struggled running the ball, especially up the middle. Tulsa wasn’t stout, they just committed six in the box. In fact, tOSU wasn’t able to move the ball running until they started attacking the edge, making Tulsa run from sideline to sideline. tOSU incorporated Barrett in the run game and used Curtis Samuel in the wildcat on about six plays. They had to adjust. OU shouldn’t have a problem.

      • Super Keith says:

Not to mention we were facing a pretty terrible ULM team. That’s not a knock on Neville, the kid is very gifted. It’s just that the competition level will only go up from here (minus KU).

        • KJ1123 says:

Exactly Keith, I mean I know everyone is excited, but you have to look at the whole picture. If they can RAISE their level of play against tOSU, then I will be impressed.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Just watched our game finally and I’m pleasantly pleased. I was really skeptical about the two JUCO signees but I feel comfortable with both of them out there and they play fast. Gallimore, like everyone told me showed out. We better be ready for the short quick hitters that Ohio state uses in their pass game. I think our front will be able to hold their own. Caleb will be a star for us. Mykel jones is literally young Shepard and even some Kenny stills in him. Sterling with the way he moves and Kenny with his hands and sense of calm throughout. Joe Mixon is our best player and it’s NOT even close.

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Was always very, very confident about Kapri, and loved Beal’s tape @ Lackawana (where he was rushing from the outside) but was skeptical about Beal’s play for us because we are playing him in the middle. Have to say though, for a guy that is 214 pounds, he sure is physical (and he uses his speed extremely well). Starting to make a believer out of me that he is a viable option in the middle.

    • Spitting Bull says:

Speaking of Stills and his hands. He was all alone and dropped a sure TD yesterday. Very disappointing since I have him on my fantasy team. Good thing I benched him.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Hopefully TFB can get ahold ( or already have ) of Phillips so we can see how his visit went. Love that we played the young backers and I also loved that his parents were both in attendance.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Watching the Stoops coaches show, he blamed the first ULM touchdown on a safety bust. I think we all figured that out by watching the butt chewing on the sideline.

I was at the tOSU game against Tulsa yesterday: Here are a few observations:

    1. tOSU struggled stopping Tulsa run game.
    2. tOSU DBs have improved since spring but Tulsa’s receivers were getting opened but dropped a bunch of balls.
    3. Curtis Samuels can scat, he’s patient and he likes to get lost in the junk.
    4. tOSU threw the ball to Samuels out of the backfield more than they did to their receivers.
    5. Tulsa jammed the run lanes early on; tOSU adjusted by attacking the edge an using Samuels in the wildcat.
    6. Tulsa DL and OL won the LOS in the first half.
    7. Don’t let the score fool you; tOSU struggled offensively: 17 points came from Tulsa turnovers, two of them pick sixes.

I assume this has been posted earlier, but in the off chance that it has not, our good buddy at Huff99 was so kind to upload. Good quality in case you missed it live.

I really enjoyed the game and think the stadium as fantastic. Can’t wait for next Saturday!

  • CPSooner says:

Most impressive play of the game….Michiah Quick not retaliating when he got sucker slapped in the face. That level of self-control is not common in young college football players these days. Kudos to Michiah for not getting a penalty and costing his team 15 yards. I do think the ULM player should have been ejected fwiw!

    • Sooner Ray says:

Agree. I have even re-watched the game and have no idea how an official didn’t see that punch. Of course we’ve seen they don’t really know the rules of the game either.

      • JD says:

they called personal foul on both guys…didnt see what Quick did though…he must have done it pretty Quick

        • Sooner Ray says:

Sometimes in those situations it’s not what we see, it’s what the official heard said between the players.

          • JD says:

He must have said something pretty bad for it to off set a hay maker

          • Sooner Ray says:

Something like ” the top of your mothers head looked good last night” would bring one of those hay makers and make an official call it a draw. 🙂

    • JD says:

They actually called that on both players (off setting)…dont ask me why…he did hold back…I wonder if he actually did something before the retaliation that the refs seen that wasn’t shown on tv

      • lefty67 says:

I just happened to be watching him on that play out of curiosity, what with the issues going on with that CB spot. If he did anything before getting popped, I didn’t see it. IMO it had to either be verbal, or they got him for clapping afterwards, ala’ Flowers in the playoff last year.

  • CPSooner says:

I realize it was against ULM, but I also thought Samia at RG and Evans at RT worked out pretty well too!

    • Sooner Ray says:

It wasn’t a step backwards. After watching a little and hearing some reports about the TU/tOSU game, feeling better about the line’s chances.

Word of caution. Urban Meyer knows who he’s playing this week and what this game means so I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on how tOSU did against Tulsa. Just saying. I imagine they were as vanilla as we were.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I know. Worries me. The game is won in the trenches. If BM has time and OUr guys can get Perine and Mixon clean into the next level it’ll be a long day for Meyer. Question: Who is more talented in the trenches?

      • Sooner Ray says:

“Sometimes” hunger beats talent, hoping our dawgs are hungry this week.

        • Mason says:

My grandpa was a retired basketball coach, and he would always tell his team, especially when they were the underdogs, “It’s not the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog.”

      • Chris White says:

I think D-line will be the tale of the game. Our Oline looked pretty good on Saturday but tOSU has a good Dline so they will be tested. However, I also think our Dline is better than their Oline so we need to get pressure off the snap and push the line back. JT is as good a runner as any QB so we will need our depth and a loud ass crowd

    • DrewChubbs says:

I tend to agree with you. However, no matter how vanilla your playbook is, if you have better, stronger athletes, you don’t get pushed around by smaller, less gifted guys. That did happen in the 1st half against Tulsa. Still, I’m sure the Urbaneyes will probably bring a different mindset to Norman. I’d be shocked if we did the same to them with consistency. I’m expecting a brawl.

    • soonermusic says:

Never, ever, underestimate Uban Meyers or an Urban Meyers coached team.

  • soonermusic says:

Finally got to see the game. Pretty easy to see what everyone likes so much about Kendall, Adams, Jones, and AD Miller as well. Kendall clearly has a truly big league arm, and looked as good as any backup I can recall. He was poised, moved well, and threw effortlessly into some tight windows. Wow.

Mixon is just what the doctor ordered for punt returns.

Obo (if auto correct changes that to “boo” one more time…) continues to impress.

Siebert appeared to kick deep in the end zone in both directions, so unless the wind was conveniently moving, he’s at least capable of serious touchbacks on occasion.

Obviously, can’t judge much due to the level of the opposition, but feel pretty good about the team performance, overall. Next week the rubber meets the road.

  • Defend Colfax says:

Just about all of their skilled players can house it. No missed tackles this week. Look for screens and back shoulders all day.

    Hahaha wow. Go Pats!

  • soonermusic says:

Definitely fun to see Caleb Kelly looking good out there as well. And who was that huge defensive lineman that dropped back into pass coverage and broke up a pass? Better take note of the wheels on that big dude.

It’s buckies beat down week beeotches, let’s do this sheeot!

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Here’s screen shot of a negative play the pass went to the wideout for a gainer. The corner is well off, the wr takes a quick in route…left side of QB’s vision…the LB (14) moves to forward on the read option and the area is vacated…he isn’t deep enough correct? This cannot happen on a regular basis and I know it didn’t against ULM…BUT….

  • SoonerRex says:

Anyone know where I could re-watch the full game? After reading this great breakdown, I would love to see how some of the second team guys did considering I left at halftime. Especially on defence. It appears they’ve taken it down off youtube. So if anyone know of a way, please let me know! Thanks
