I wanted to at least honestly be able to say I tried to find some kind of stat that this KU team has done moderately well, but it just wasn’t there to be found. Or at least not in the time I was willing to spend looking. This certainly isn’t any revelation on my part, but on paper this game is every single thing you think it should be.
Barring some type of epic collapse an OU’s part and/or the Sooners just come out incredibly flat — somewhat similar to what Texas Tech did in Lawrence a couple weeks ago — there is no reason to believe Oklahoma can’t win this game on form alone.
You may or may not have already read, or will read, some people this week try to spin you on this particular aspect of the game and how it could make an impact. However, I’m not going to insult your intelligence like that. Unless OU commits something like five or more turnovers, there is no reason this game should even be a contest.
But even with all that said, we’re still gonna give this a go for another week. And I’d expect this is the case with these pretty much every week, but you should be going in (to my post, not the game) with low expectations.
* Ground Game: It’s somewhat similar to this past week against Tech in that this is really a lose-lose type of scenario in terms of OU’s run game. A second straight week facing a porous run defense, although believe it or not KU’s rush defense (119th nationally) is actually a slight upgrade from TTU (126th).
Success on the ground and you’re met with ‘So what, it’s Kansas. You should be able to run the ball.’ Meanwhile, struggle to move the ball and you’ll hear ‘WTF?!? You can’t even run the ball against Kansas???’ Hence, lose-lose.
Granted there will always be some who won’t take either side of that equation to the extreme as stated above, but if OU does struggle it would have to at least bring into question whether or not this o-line has indeed started to gel as many are now suggesting.
* Secondary: Kansas is at or near the bottom of almost every Big 12 offensive category, so it’s unlikely they provide much of a test for this OU secondary on Saturday. Although from what little I have watched of the Jayhawks this year, their freshman QB Ryan Willis can definitely spin it. And this will be an OU unit without one of their best players in Zack Sanchez. So in that respect it will be interesting to see how they (OU) respond, and how KU goes about attempting to attack them.
I believe as of the time this post will go up Dakota Austin is expected to get the start in Sanchez’s place, but Marcus Green is also supposed to be available and I’ve yet to really hear anything specific as to PJ Mbanasor’s status for this game. So will KU go after Austin, and will he be able to carry over the momentum after having come in unexpectedly against Tech and playing well?
And if this game gets out of hand, as I suspect some believe there is a good chance of happening, will we see a guy like Kahlil Haughton get some extensive playing time after seeing the field a decent amount last week as OU’s dime back.
* Young Wideouts: And if we’re sticking with the theme of assuming some of the young guys get a chance in this game, I’m anxious to see if Lincoln Riley tries to work them in like he did at times last week. The redshirts are off at this point, so by all means get A.D. Miller & Dahu Green out there to help build some confidence (especially the latter after dropping that gimmie TD against Tech). Jeffrey Mead could probably benefit from an easy catch or two, or maybe make an effort to get Michiah Quick in space, or offer proof Dallis Todd is actually still on the team. I’m not picky, just have fun with it.
* More Primetime: Coming off what was arguably his “breakout” game, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say I’m probably not alone in hoping Joe Mixon can keep it going on Saturday. I also seem to get the sense people are only just now coming around to the fact he’s not just about making people miss, as he did a number of times last week, but also his ability to run through/over people. He runs hard and is just as apt to put a move on you as he is lower his shoulder.
And while it was fun and all to see Mixon play so well last Saturday, the part that really intrigued me was the different ways Lincoln Riley is now starting to utilize getting Mixon the ball in space.

What will you be watching for Saturday afternoon?

I just don’t want to see any major mistakes. Good tackling and lots of guys getting playing time would be nice. If it’s not close at the half I would also like to see Trevor run the full offense. Not just handoff duty.
And no injuries
Why? For practice? Or just in case? He’s the back-up. BS won’t pile on the score, so no passes.
I will tell you what I will be watching a fifty point blow out.
In my opinion, this shouldn’t be an everybody gets to play game, unless the score gets outta hand. We need to work out the kinks for the next two games so we can beat bu and tcu.
Just take care of business the next 2 weeks. Keep improving
I’m looking for clean crisp execution for the starters and no injuries to important players.
for sure….
Is Daniel Brooks healthy? If so, I would like to see him get some touches too.
Why not run the wish bone offense…I am not sure we are gonna need to throw the ball at all, except for play action passes. I would love to see the center and guard pull in front of some running backs.
It will be a good game to work on the Mixon-Perine wildcat options.
Might as well let Daniel Brooks and Cody Thomas get in on the action too. Just another “option”, no pun intended, to keep oposing defenses guessing.
Look fellas…I was being sarcastic…:-)
Because we aren’t going to put in a new offense for this game, and we still need to work on our passing offense some, even if it isn’t “needed” in this game.
Andrew, you can’t put a new offense in a week. Also, do you want Baker to get hit on almost every play? Guards pull all the time in our offense.
How do your two statements in this series square with your previous “…shouldn’t be an everybody gets to play game…”? If there’s some sarcasm/humor in here, better use the “s/” symbol to clue us in.
yep…..
FOCUS and the ever important EXECUTION!
BOOMER ?⚪️
I look for tons of the freshman to get a solid 1.5-2 quarters of valuable experience.
miller, green and mead have all had a bit of the dropsies this year, absolutely agree about getting them some easy catches to get them some confidence.
Can’t disagree with any of that. Good list.
You can’t get too bogged down in the specifics in a game like this. I just hope we show up, and play hard and well. If we do that, we’ll win by a lot of points and be fine. Be nice to see continued improvement up front, and continued good tackling.
I too hope we get to see a lot of young guys in the second half.
That’s right. Treat KU like they are number one or number 127: every opponent should get OU’s best effort. Their effort/lack of execution will keep it close or open the flood gates.
I agree. Although, I would like some of the young guys to be subbed in with the starters in the late 2nd Qtr or early 3rd Qtr so their play will be the same as if they had to play for an injured starter.
Seamless play from the backups. Heck, I want TK9 and /or Cody Thomas in there throwing in the 3rd Q if it gets out of hand. We already know what Baker can do IMO
I’ll be hoping our ding-up players get well rested. How the OL performs, even given the opposition. Like JE said, there isn’t a whole lot to sink my teeth into. No injuries, lots of work for the younger guys.
You see the “calls of the week ” on sooner sports. its really cool. I hope they do more of these.
Go to the video link “calls of the week ” to watch.

I loved Tisdale! He had the most infectious smile I can remember.
go down the page and click on the video “calls of the week ” its the coaches talking to each other during the game ( I think). Really cool
I did, but I watched the little thing on OU basketball too.
That is awesome. Love hearing them yell the same things I yell when I am watching. LOL
Me too, I will check out the BBall video.
I will be watching the score from the seats in Lawrence. Since I am not driving to the game I have already been told by my KU rooting best friend that we will probably be leaving at halftime. I am so disappointed. Win or lose, I have never left an OU game early (even the big XII title game when we got crushed by KSU). But it’s a 5.5 hour drive from there to home, I certainly do not want to walk.
I will be watching the WR blocking downfield and the execution of the Oline and Dline closely. Since watching on TV never shows you everything going on, I enjoy seeing it live and in person.
You stayed for the 2003 KSU loss? Hats off to you…
I did. It was only the second time I had taken my two sons to a game. We had free tickets and a parking pass. And we stayed until the end. They wanted to leave. I wanted to leave. But I was trying to teach them to never give up.
Ok, Rick Astley.
LOL! They were young and just learning to play sports.
I stayed for the entire thing too. I didn’t pay all that money and drive up to KC to leave early.
I will be there also – driving from STL.
Same.
What section did you sit in?
I was at the OU loss when Aikman first started. We were sitting in the middle of a group of KU Sigma Chi alumni celebrating some kind of reunion. Painful, very painful, Second only to the scenic beauty of Kansas.
Not a very good friend, is he? 😉
He let me stay for the entire game.
I’m still not clear on this. Has Mbanasor been injured? When did that happen?
He got hurt on special teams I believe.
correct, kickoff coverage last week
Thie biggest test will be to see if the team can maintain focus, intensity and concentration. Playng an underwhelming opponent can sometimes lead to sloppy, error-prone play, so need to be efficient and button-downed.
As per JE’s first paragraph above, KU does a pretty good job of rushing the passer. They actually got 5 sacks of Mahomes when they played Tech tough a few weeks ago, and Tech was supposed to have a pretty good OL. Not sure how this will translate vs. OU, but something to keep an eye on…..KU’s pass rush.
Note: I have not read any of the other comments, so it may have already been brought up.
OL…OL….OL…must continue to improve, gain confidence and execute. They are the key to the rest of the season.
Yep.
What we’ve seen lately has been against the bottom-feeders. The next two games shouldn’t tell us much, as long as the OL stays dominant. If they happen to NOT be dominant, that might tell us something.
Assuming they stay strong, they’ll have some confidence going in to Waco, where we’ll all see how much the OL has actually progressed this year.
I don’t expect this, but if this team comes out flat, uninterested or uninspired, we have a problem team. But based on the last two games, I expect half-hundred to 7. 55-7.
agree with you…..
I don’t think they will.
Whether they do or not is a good indicator of how serious they are. Ya gotta bring everything even if the other team sucks ….
Ball security, sure tackling, Baker making faster sound decisions, no dropped balls from our receivers. I dont think Jordan will go this week, so I’d like to see some improvement out of Frank especially in coverage. And watching the OL of course.
Biggest thing I want to see at this point of the season is the depth at WR begin to mature. Joe Mixon is catching up to the speed of the game, the young oline components are coming together, so the last thing we’re waiting on offensively is consistent, turnover free wide receiver play from guys not named Shepard.
Wasn’t Texass at the bottom of the Big 12 offensive category when OU played them?
They weren’t below KU at any point I don’t think. Kansas, unlike Texas, has neither the raw talent nor the coaching staff in place long enough to develop it.
Know it’s not easy, but hopefully the team has the texsa game still hovering over them and they come out focused. As much as I would like and expect to see Perine and Mixon run wild, I would like to see the offense work on the passing game and their timing more, developing their receivers. Want to see a lot of young guys by the end of the 3rd Q, even TK9, and no significant injuries.
For that big buck to walk by in the am… thus preventing a scheduling conflict 😉
Someone out there still have a pic of the typo in the ut media guide that started the whole “Texsa” thing? Would love to see it again.
Thanks in advance.
Here ya go.
Thanks!!!
I’ll be looking for no letdown in effort. If they want to play at the next level, the boys need to learn how to bring all they got (all they are) for every game, and just because it’s Kansas doesn’t mean they should relax. Also, I’ll be looking for no injuries.
I want to see Quick out of the doghouse. I think his success is critical to the team, and especially will be next year when Shep/Neal are gone. Need to build him some reps and some confidence.
Is he really in the dog house at this point? It’s kind of like playing time for Andrews…..I think OU just has so many deserving bodies that we can’t find the snaps for everybody right now.
Especially when we go to the Perine/Mixon backfield, and only have three receivers on the field. Most of the time those three are going to be Shep, Westbrook, and Neal. Andrews and Baxter both deserve to play some, IMO.
I agree. This is a catch 22 though. They don’t want to run up the score. But at the same time they want to get some reps for all the young wide outs. Oh the hell with it. Run it up. Run it way up!
Agree 100% regarding Quick.
no Texas-redux game again—never !! hopefully, OU will show up with a surly demeanor, take advantage of all opportunities EARLY, score 35-42 by halftime, SIT all starters, and play RESERVES the entire 2nd half and, as Soonerdave said, NO INJURIES…..
When we go to the dime, where does Kahlil Haughton go? Is he the high safety or plays the actual dime spot opposite of Will Johnson?
I’m afraid Dahu found a permanent seat on the bench after that drop of an easy TD, just as Todd did when he dropped an easy 3rd down conversion early in the season.
I hope not. I would understand them not being trusted when a game is on the line. But in a game like this, if all goes well, this is a perfect opportunity to restore confidence. Coaches would be foolish not to take it. There are a lot of hands and only one ball though.
Todd didn’t make it back on the field in blowouts, so I don’t expect Green to either. And I think the coaches have certainly been “foolish” at times,, ie re-punt against Okie Lite and D game plan against Texass.
Ill be looking at oline and dline nastiness maybe mixon breaks perines rushing record or perine breaks his own against same team.Clean game starters resting 2nd half no injuries
Going out on a limb here, not a flimsy limb by any means but its still out there:
Mixon AND Perine both break the 150 yd mark this Sat. (rushing only). Mixon breaks 200 combined.
I like it, and think its possible/ borderline probable. See us continuing to work on the run game a lot
Would really like to see some shovel passes worked in to Mixon… along with some short dumps over a blitzing D.
That’s a sturdy limb. Could be a treehouse on it.
Flowers may even get a hundred!
Baker might get a 100
I can see KU selling out to stop our run game, so it’s a very likely scenario that Baker will run on them. Not a given, but it’s very likely in my estimation.
This young man is all in, I tell ya. I can’t wait to see him play. Check out his Twitter wallpaper.
Who?
Bryce Youngquist, 2016 LB, OU commit.
Hopefully he’s recruiting Mique
I hope you’re right.
Definitely looking forward to watching him play. It’s kind of funny. He looks like a grown ass 26 yr old man but when he speaks you can definitely tell he’s a teenager.
OU DNA and OU clever too! He already has a brand.
No major injuries over the next 2 weeks and I’m happy
so long as they’re both wins too ….
We will have 900 total yards of Offense. Thunder & Lightning will each have 200 yards. Shake n bake will sling it around.
No pressure on the offense or anything
I want to see consistency from the entire to but especially the oline and receivers and consistent pressure from the dline.
Looking for the 2’s and 3’s getting some game time!
This TCU team is not impressive. I’m not buying it.
I just hope they slip by and stay undefeated so they give us a good bump when we wax them. 🙂
That would be nice. However, everyone is so enamored with them, it would still be a good win.
But to your point, if they have a loss, the talking heads will be looking to play down an OU win over TCU.
They are a darling right now because of that zero in the loss column, they will tumble big time after the first one. They only help us if polls prop them up.
You are correct. Let’em stay up there. WVU is not blitzing like they did against OU.
They don’t have the same defensive players, as when they played OU
That’s right, Joseph is out. He was big for them on the back end.
Last year they weren’t either. Remember, OU should’ve won. But they ended up winning out and destroying Ole Piss. They should have been in the final 4 and would have been able to beat Bama and Oregon, IMO. Don’t think they could have beaten tOSU.
True. But OU did not have any offense last year. Heuple was too predictable.
Agreed. TCU/tOSU is the NC game we should have gotten. But then, ya know, they’re not from the SEC, so I guess their chances of getting into the playoff were pretty much nonexistent.
Really? They are shutting down the same team we had trouble stopping.
Lol almost 2 hours later………………
That same team can’t catch a cold. How many TDs have WVU’s receivers dropped tonight?
Oh, and “we had trouble stopping”? Don’t recall your number being called. Also, TCU has 40 less yards than OU gave up in the entire game, but go on.
As mentioned both above and below the number one thing that I want to see ( other than no injuries ) is our young WRs getting lots of targets and as a result lots of confidence. If we dont have Quick, Miller, Mead, Dahu and Smallwood as major threats next year we will have a major problem.
Lol reading an article about what Esco will be watching is basically reading an article about what a 2 year old will be watching. Why does TFB allow this guy to write his own article every week? *****Clown Alert*****
You seem to be mad. Tampon for your butthole?
Lol I guess you love this guy’s “professional” writing
So speaks the clown.
Well TCU statistically looked way more dominant against WVU than OU did. On the other hand it looked like WVU had a lot of opportunities they just didn’t capitalize on…..the dropped passes for example. Nevertheless, TCU looking better week by week….Sooners better be paying attention.
True. Although WVU had more injuries since they played us. Still, TCU looks like a tougher game than they did to start the season.
geez, 140 am ct……….ducks down sun devils in 3 ot, 61/55…….heart breaking loss for the devils as ducks score with 12 sec left to force ot….duck ez int to end it…….one of the more interesting games of the season…….catch the high lights
Seams like a great game to keep working on tempo. Got to be running fast and furious when we run the Nov gaunlet
Not sure if already mentioned, but I’d like to see a fast start. Pretty sure that K-State was the only game where we scored on our first possession. Will need to start faster if we want to beat Baylor and TCU.
