Some Thoughts On OU vs. Baylor

* I’m assuming it’s a product of my general apathy towards this season that this felt like as anticlimactic a win over Baylor as any I can really remember. I’m sure it had something to do with the general disgust with regards to the Baylor program, and surely wasn’t helped by the gruesome apparent ankle injury Seth Russell suffered in the game.

But even prior to that injury, I thought Russell looked pretty terrible. So it’s a win and I suppose a good win, but I was just kind of surprised how little excitement there seemed (again, to me) to be after the fact.

* I don’t know where that Jordan Evans performance came from or has been for the last four years, but my word was it a welcome sight. Felt like one of the more dominant individual performances from an OU linebacker in quite some time.

Maybe a little ‘right place, right time’ deal on that second interception, but on the first one it looked to me like he did a textbook job of baiting Russell into the pick.

* A workman-like and pretty ridiculously efficient performance from Baker Mayfield with really just that one poor decision on the INT in an otherwise terrific game.

* At the risk of repeating myself, Joe Mixon is special.

I hope you enjoy watching him in the crimson and cream as much as I have while we still can.

* Oh, and Dede Westbrook is pretty damn good in his own right, too.

* 500+ yards allowed, but only 24 points. So I’m assuming the defense is still “fixed” building off those two big wins over Kansas & Iowa State, right?

* It was very encouraging to see Samaje Perine back out there and look to not have lost a step whatsoever. Especially considering the fact it was a groin issue, and just a couple years ago we saw Sterling Shepard continue to ‘tweak’ that same injury seemingly week after week.

So for Perine to look as good, and healthy, as he did was, I thought, a really good sign (signed, Captain Obvious).

* Thought Mark Andrews had a solid game, and was very happy at an actual Mykel Jones sighting.

* Still don’t love what OU is doing up front defensively and other than Evans’ two sacks, really didn’t seem to me like OU got much pressure on either Baylor quarterback at all.

Until they can get someone other than just Ogbonnia Okoronkwo in the vicinity of the opposing quarterback, and even he didn’t really do much of that on Saturday, it’s has been and will continue to be a significant problem for this defense.

On to next weekend’s big showdown in Morgantown.
