Official: Jay Norvell To Texas

Image via USA Today

There are now multiple reports out late Friday afternoon that former OU co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach, Jay Norvell, is expected to be named the new wide receivers coach at the University of Texas.

Needless to say, that could make for an interesting afternoon on a certain Saturday in Dallas his October.

UPDATE: Texas makes it official.

  • CS says:

Wow! Good for him. Will be a strange time for our WRs facing their old mentor/coach.

  • Wilson says:

Didn’t Daryl Wyatt do a similar flip flop? P.S. it will be even stranger for J but gotta feed the bull dog.

  • Billy says:

    Lol

  • Zack says:

I think this means newsome to Texas is a guarantee.

    • hOUligan says:

Burnt orange is the new black? Think they had Newsome, already. As said, don’t think they need the ‘recruiting help’ and we”ll see if he can develop a few receivers there or some have the talent to make him look good.

  • Easton says:

    He found a job.

  • SoonerGoneEast says:

Was really hoping they’d hire Josh.

  • xunilla says:

Hmmm.. Didn’t they watch film of our WR this year?

    • Easton says:

      It is strange.

      • Stephen Dale says:

since JN knows the Sooner program inside out, the hire makes sense for UT…this will help Texas in preparing for the RRS for the forseeable future.

        • Lane Gilstrap says:

Not really seeing as how half of the staff will be new faces.

        • James D-Space says:

Difference being, he can’t give away play secrets or plays with OU coaching turnover.
Shorthorns will have to do their homework on their own. However, certainly could hurt us in recruiting (i.e Cali).

          • JD says:

So far we aren’t seeing the change on the D side of the ball so he would have an advantage there unless we hire a db guru with a diff philosophy than the Stoops bros…Kish Mike and Viney all recruit cali well…Stills is the only guy he’s really brought in that’s contributed and Cale might get credit for that for landing Clay

          • James D-Space says:

That’s true based on this past season results. Each year is a new team. However, we are gonna find out if it was Jay’s fault or Josh – lack of a solid QB play. No doubt Jay can recruit, but can he develop the kids. This is the part in question, which I believe led to his firing. This Is all getting VERY interesting.

          • JD says:

YEp…I think we’ll be ok with who ever we end up with since our O will be able to get the ball to the wrs by force feed if necessary and Riley actually developed Crabtree so we at the least took a lateral step while Norvelle took a step down (as far as title goes)

          • James D-Space says:

So Riley is OC and QB’s correct? Who gonna coach WR’s?
Man, I wish we just committed a coach to a the positions and recruiting and the OC/DC to focus on film and game plans.
I’m completely opposed to multi-tasking. To desk jockey came up with concept to save money on payroll.
Multi-tasking should mean… Doing twice as much as I should, half as good as I could.

          • JD says:

Correct..we don’t have a wr coach yet but Riley has done very well at both…multitasking is just part of the game with the coaching limits…the good coaches can and do do it well

          • James D-Space says:

So there is a coaches limit? Did not know this…. Fair enough.
Who would you like to see as our new WR coach?

          • JD says:

I could live with Shawn Jefferson..plus we are recruiting his son…He’s an NFL guy and just by watching his son run routes you can tell he’s a good teacher…I think we’d get a good recruiter (with the nfl label) and teacher

          • AmaGoh7 says:

I am with you on this one !

          • James D-Space says:

I think that remember him. San Diego Chargers I think?
I got nothing…. No idea who is good or is even available.

          • akryan says:

Every team does this. Most head coaches even coach a position. Saban takes a special interest in the DB’s.

          • James D-Space says:

Regarding Cali… My point is it might open doors via connections and networking while at OU that opens doors for Texas.

          • JD says:

Yeah it could help them recruiting but don’t think it will hurt us…texas usually doesn’t leave the state but Charlie has shown the desire to do so

          • James D-Space says:

Agreed and they can’t sign them all.

          • akryan says:

He won’t have much more to show them than what they already have seen with their own eyes, especially by the time the RRR is played.

        • ColoradoSooner says:

Not so much with the changes being made.

        • Boomer4life says:

          Always the optimists.

        • Docknoss says:

You do realize we will have a new OC, DB and WR coach? They’ll have no clue what’s up

        • Stephen says:

Yeah, because our offense totally will be the same next year as it was the previous 7 years he was here.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

    Well….. Bye.

  • pitbull17 says:

Damn, hate to see this, he’s a very good recruiter and I hate the thought of him recruiting against OU .It’s not like texass needs any help in recruiting, they mostly get the pick of the litter in the state anyway.

  • Tucker says:

I know it was a tough goodbye… but dang… IM BLEEDIN INSIDE MY CHEST!

  • Daddy R says:

WTF!? Now thats a way to stick it to your former employer.

  • Daddy R says:

At least we know our db’s will have it easier in the game..

    • Zack says:

My guess is we’ll press them cause we know he won’t teach them to get off press

      • rphokc says:

…..and he’ll teach them to just run right by and say bye

        • ToatsMcGoats says:

Yup. If anyone knows the weaknesses in our secondary, it’s Norvell. Pretty scary thought. We’d better get a real DB coach, or it could get ugly in Dallas this Oct.

    • cush creekmont says:

If OUr DBs play matador defense 10 yards off those wideouts and tackle like a girls’ soccer team, Norvell might seem like Chip Kelly.

  • Jared Tyra says:

Texas, whose receivers have been subpar to their standards, hires a coach who just had a group of receivers subpar to OU’s standards? Bravo, Longhorns hahaha

    • ND52 says:

And we said the same thing about Brent Venables too…………

      • Jared Tyra says:

I liked BV. The man was fiery; to that end, I don’t recall saying this same thing about him.

      • Billy says:

Ehhh. I wasn’t really a “fire Brent” person, but I don’t think it’s fair to use this argument. There are plenty of cases of a coach having success after some failures at their previous school. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have been sent packing.

      • Nate Broadus says:

I’m not convinced Venables’ success isn’t because of the conference in which Clemson resides.

Here’s some food for thought: Clemson — and by extension, Venables — faced three ranked teams all season (Georgia, FSU, and Georgia Tech).

Their record against all three was 0-3.

I also wouldn’t include the destruction of OU as a highlight on their resume. The Sooners, by season’s end, were a wreck. I’m amazed at the 8-5 finish (the Sooners damn near lost to Texas Tech).

The ACC is one of the most top heavy conferences in college football. There are only three teams even in the national discussion and, arguably, one of them is on the fringe (GT). It’s a perfect conference to pad stats in — just aks FSU and their offense (the one that Oregon feasted on in the Playoff).

Frankly, I don’t see Venables’ defenses being much different from his defenses at OU. For most of his time they put up decent stats in Norman: just not always against the teams that mattered. Last year they gave up 51 to Florida State, and got whipped around Miami by Urban Meyer’s offense. (Thank God Clemson had an offense.)

Until Venables’ defenses perform against truly elite teams, he looks about the same to me as he did at OU — just in a much weaker conference.

There are no TCU’s, Baylor’s, OSU’s, WVU’s, OU’s (when they have their ish together), or anything on that level, offensively, in the ACC, apart from FSU.

        • soonerthunder says:

Agree w/you about judging him on game w/OU. I believe that Stoops already told several coaches they were gone (as many as 5, but we’ll see). They were looking for jobs, not preparing to play Clemson, IMO.

    • Easton says:

Another test of Bob’s management system.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Baylor announced that two former Oklahoma Sooners and NFL players were added to its football operations staff.

Joe Jon Finley will be offensive quality control while, Brodney Pool will be special team quality control, according to a release posted tobaylorbears.com.

  • Josh says:

I’ve been Twitter buds with Coach Norvell for a bit now and he has always DMd ( direct messaged) me back anytime I had anything to say to him including the day it was announced that he was leaving. Very classy man and I hope he does well except for a certain Saturday in October.

  • Cush Creekmont says:

I guess we’ll see our old WR coach versus our CB Coach (old, new, rearranged).

  • Jeff says:

I guess Chuck thinks he can beat OU so he gets the left overs!

  • Defend Colfax says:

    texas sucks

  • James D-Space says:

Congrats….. I guess? You gonna look terrible in that color, but whateva. Seriously though, congrats coach Norvell, appreciate all you did for OU. See Ya Dallas!
    BOOMER!

  • OuFulla5 says:

he had one bad year of coaching (which was more of a lack of having a decent qb to even distribute) people forget all the other receiving corps and recievers he developed. besides the obvious broyles & shepard, he maximized guys like manny Johnson, jaz reynolds, Iglesias and a bunch more….Texas just got better

    • Easton says:

      Word, I hear that. I don’t disagree.

    • Swanny says:

I’ll counter you with Owens, Jarboe, McClain, Powell, Jackson, Metoyer, Woods, and Cavill. All transferred or were kicked off. That’s quite a list. When I was coaching I brought kids to multiple camps too. He never impressed me. He would connect with the kids, but I never felt like they walked away with something valuable.

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

Very interesting statement. I guess I never thought about what HS coaches thought about his recruiting or coaching techniques.

        • Swanny says:

Toats, I will be honest though, I haven’t forgiven the guy. My last year going to the OU camp I brought a freak athlete kid with me who had never played football. 6’3″ WR who ran a 22 second 200M, ended up high jumping 6’10” for a D1 track program. Norvell treated him like he was a 5’4″ club handed kid who wore concrete shoes. Kid said screw football and ended up not playing. I’m still sour about it and that was Summer 2009.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

This really gives some weight to the feelings Dejuan Miller was putting on display. I know guys like this that I can’t even stand the sight of. I never would have thought. Seriously, thanks for the insight. You should always meet your heroes.

    • J J says:

Thing is out of all those… None were guys he recruited, except Jaz. They were all on campus years before he got there. And I like the guy, just saying, it wasn’t him. In fact, I don’t even know that he coached, Iglesias & Johnson more than 1 season…

  • shawncturner says:

Well this will be interesting next year on the recruiting trail if he ends up recruiting a WR we are after as well. Would love the awkward silence if both OU and Texas staffs were at a house at the same time…heh.

  • JJSoona says:

I have thoughts to share but I’ll keep it to myself. Sooooo is Cumby out of the picture as Co-OC and receivers coach?

  • Sooner Ray says:

    Don’t like it.

  • sooner8 says:

The Jay Norvell to TEJAS only tells me Bob better hit a freakin homerun with the WR coaching hire!!A coach that is a great recruiter but can also develop talent!!!!!!!!!

  • JD says:

We should hire Mack just to get back at them 😉

    • James D-Space says:

      That’s funny JD.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Noooo….that would just be them getting back at us double.
I say we just kidnap Bevo and serve free cheeseburgers to the whole team.

    • Boomer4life says:

He already worked for us before.

    • Steve Johns says:

I remember pessimistic fans saying “we’ll never beat texas again!” after Mac was hired. He could’ve had the OU job after Gibbs but bowed out because his brother Watson (who was never going to get it) applied.

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

Aaannnddd….no. I know it would be all in jest, but I wouldn’t touch Smack Clown with a cattle prod. Well, maybe a cattle prod…

      • JD says:

Def all in jest…can’t wait to see who the wr and db coaches are …hopefully we hit some homers like our last hires

        • ToatsMcGoats says:

I figured it was. I think Bobby has some real names up his sleeve. Just hope it doesn’t take another week or three…

  • James D-Space says:

    Oh my….

  • Greg says:

He got fired. You take the job that is offered regardless of who it is in coaching. Do you think if Bob got fired and OSU had let Gundy go that Bob wouldn’t take the job if offered. Damn straight he would if there were no other offers. That’s the nature of the beast when it comes to football and coaching.

  • Docknoss says:

It’s crazy how little people comment on Crimsonandcreammachine articles since Jordan came over to TFB. It’s kind of sad, I Remember 4 years ago that site being the place for conversation.

    • Steve Johns says:

Here’s an easy fix… come here instead!

    • eastoksooner says:

Jordan is the best. The other site sucks now.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Part of it is that Jordan is better at making conversation in comments than the others over there. He was also the best and most prolific writer over there. And overall, there’s just a lot more info over here, especially with the addition of Jordan.

  • Steve Johns says:

Sure was hoping he’d take the Wisky job.

    • eastoksooner says:

After being used to Oklahoma winter I don’t think he would be interested in Wisconsin winters.

  • CrimsonGhost says:

Such a move is certainly not unprecedented, but all the same, it’s a little crazy.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Seen some texsa fans post that they are excited to have Norvel because their WR development has been lacking the past few years……………….so there’s that.

  • Birddawg says:

This move by jay is a big f#*k you to Bob.
Jay is going to be highly motivated to stick it in Bobs face just like BV.

    • Zack says:

In a rivalry game especially, I don’t think a position coach makes a difference. If he was calling plays…ok but he won’t.

      • soonerthunder says:

And he won’t be able to tell them anything of substance b/c w/new OC Riley he won’t have anything pertinent to tell the D coaches, even if he would. They may not have even cared asking him if it was Heupel still coaching. People don’t realize how compartmentalized coaching on college level is. doubt they’d think he has anything to offer them even if it was Heupel. W/Riley, he doesn’t have anything they don’t already know.

    • Tulsa Terry says:

Strong hired him exclusively for dope on the Sooners.

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

    Weird. I snickered at this.

  • paganpink says:

It will help BOTH teams. Good luck to him.

  • soonermusic says:

As much as I feel that the wr performance was hugely responsible for the results that we saw this past season, I’m not sure there’s any way those of us outside of the program can judge exactly how much was one particular coach’s fault, and how much was due to other factors. I certainly don’t think it’s as black and white as some want to paint it. No reason to not have entertaining discussion and speculation, but I don’t think you can truly know. Bob’s the one tasked with making judgements and decisions about it and he has. Meantime, like it or not, a coaching job at Texas is a plum gig, and I suspect Norvell will do well there. Like everyone here, I’m dying to find out who will be in charge of our wr’s now.

    • Zack says:

I think both heupel and norvell share equal blame for the passing/receiving woes which is why both are gone. Norvell had the better reputation so for him to land a nice job doesn’t surprise me. As far as who’s at fault for what, I think what got norvell in trouble is that he didn’t have fresh ideas or he didn’t take the initiative to say “look these aren’t the plays I’ve designed” since he was considered the passing game coordinator.

      • James D-Space says:

        Good point Zack.

      • soonerthunder says:

I think that is a fair evaluation of Norvell. Back to Heupel; he should have more the WRs around more, put them in motion more, IMO. It helps make the D show their hand a little and helps the WRs get open better. Norvell should have helped there, too, though, IMO. But, it’s really difficult being an outsider like me and making too many, if any, just criticisms. It’s hard not be on inside and not really know what’s going on, regardless of how many fans and media think.

      • soonermusic says:

You may be right, but another point to remember is that several times during the season Stoops talked about how poorly the receivers were doing in practice and how.they needed to step it up if they wanted to get on the field. The same things he alluded to appeared to be reflected in games as well.

  • leatherneck1061 says:

yeah….this almost certainly is a big FU to BS

    • soonerthunder says:

It most certainly is not. It’s a man who lost his job wanting to continue to coach and taking a great job when offered. That’s all.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

      I think that is silly.

The man is looking for a job. According to published reports, he had opportunities at Wisconsin or Texas. Which has the higher coaching salaries? Which has the stronger recruiting base? Which has the lifestyle one might prefer?

I can’t speak for Jay (although he’s clearly spoken for himself, here) but even as much as I love the Packers and the Sooners, the UT job is a better opportunity than the Wisconsin job.

It’s great to be loyal, but I tell my employees all the time “nobody is going to take as good a care of you as YOU are”. You have to do what is best for you and your family.

    • leatherneck1061 says:

My goodness you people are sensitive. If I’m wrong, fine. After all, it’s only OU’s most hated rival. Jay Norvell is just as aware of that as anyone else. I don’t believe BV, Mike, or Bob would likely take a job there if they left here. But hey, what do I know. If it were me, I think I’d head to another league.

      • soonermusic says:

Respectfully disagree. I think the notion of “hated rival” is replaced by “respected rival” when you are in the profession. These coaches view each other as colleagues, they compare notes, and in many cases are even friends. Texas. Is one of th high profile, plum gigs and I,m sure he was delighted to take the job on its own merits.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

    Brent Venables redux.

  • OUn8v says:

I’m sure he may be a great guy, but what is it about him being hired by tejas all of a sudden makes Norvell the best WR coach that ever lived? Good luck, but OU can, and will, do better in that department.

  • Jeff says:

    SUCKAS

  • Indy_sooner says:

I don’t like it, but oh well…. Its not like we hide what we are doing with Samaje. Texas had a stable of 5 stars and couldn’t do diddly squat.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Is it just me, or (1) did Heupel screw Samaje out of Heisman consideration? And (2) will the 2013 team go down in Sooner history as “The Team That Could’ve Been [if our QB play wasn’t epileptic]”?

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

    Well that will be interesting.

  • bjwalker82 says:

Really liked Riley. Came across as very sharp.
