OU vs. ISU | Names To Know

Image via chron.com

I’m thinking it’s probably fair to presume most of you haven’t spent a ton of time watching Iowa State football this season. So with that in mind, I thought it might be helpful to throw out some names to know (hence the not so clever title of this post) as Saturday approaches. Might even toss in an OU name or two just for good measure.

* Sam B. Richardson – If there is one guy on this team even a casual OU fan may be familiar with, it would probably be Richardson. He’s a junior, been the starter off and on in years past, and he’s the kind of guy just athletic enough to keep a play alive and turn nothing into something. As you might expect, he’s not having the most stellar of statistical seasons but is completing over 60% of his passes and is also the team’s leading rusher.

* E.J. Bibbs – This is a name OU fans who follow recruiting should remember as Bibbs was believed to have a final two of the Cyclones and OU at the time of his commitment. He came into the year as the Big 12’s most talented tight end and while he might not be having quite the season some expected, he’s still an incredibly difficult match up for any defense in this league. Mark Mangino will move Bibbs around quite a bit, split him out often, and look for that mismatch to exploit.

* Aaron Wimberly – Second leading rusher on the team behind Richardson and averaging just over four yards per carry. Not a big guy at 5’9″ 177 lbs but they do a lot of stuff with both he and Richardson off the zone read, which helps to create creases in the defense. And if Wimberly can hit a crease, he’s more than capable of picking up big chunks of yards.

* Allen Lazard & D’Vario Montgomery – These guys both stand 6-foot-5-inches tall and give Richardson two big targets on the outside. Both are also coming off one of if not their biggest games of the season against a Texas pass defense that, at the time, was No. 3 in the country. Julian Wilson should be relatively fine given his size, but it will be interesting to see if this is another match-up Mangino can exploit when either are lined up against the much smaller Zack Sanchez.

* Keith Ford – As most of you know by now, Ford returned to practice this week and is expected to see his first action on Saturday since the Tennessee game. It will be interesting to see just how much action he gets in this game, because one would think he shouldn’t be needed all that much. But at the same time you want to try and work him back in to prepare for the big Baylor game next week and the season going forward.

* Jevohn Miller – ISU’s middle linebacker, leading tackler, and arguably their most important player in the middle of that defense that should be tested early and often on the ground by this OU offense. I’d be pretty surprised if he doesn’t put up a somewhat gaudy total tackles number on Saturday, but that could be as much a product of what OU is doing offensively (as we OU fans have seen with some of the stats Dom Alexander has put up at times) than it is anything else.

* Charles Walker – Another OU player making their return from injury, Walker hasn’t actually played since the Tulsa game in which he suffered a knee injury. Like Ford, I’m not expecting to see Walker get a ton of snaps if for no other reason than my assumption is after all the time he’s missed his conditioning won’t really be where it needs to be to warrant a bunch of snaps. But the kid is also a physical freak, so I’m probably wrong and he’ll get a ton of action.

I hope they use Ford sparingly, just enough to get a feel for the game again. I think we are really going to need him down the stretch.

  • ratman says:

We have really missed Walker. He will be better than Tapper before he finishes at OU.

    • Super Keith says:

It feels like Tapper is having a sophomore slump (even though he’s a junior, this is really only his second year as a full time starter). I think he’ll make a lot more noise before he’s done at OU. That said, I think Walker could end up being one of the best d-linemen we’ve had in a while.

I agree, I think we’ve missed his contribution the past few weeks. It was nice getting Dimon back for the last game, but it’ll be even better when we have Walker.

  • Big Higg says:

One WOULD think Ford shouldn’t be needed a whole lot. But then again Iowa St put up 45 on a Texas team we couldn’t even get a first down on. Hopefully Ford is ready if we need to go down that road. Lol

    • EasTex says:

Ford has been missed and he needs the reps to get back into playing shape for the final five game push.

  • KOKEVO says:

After the way ou has played the past few games im not taking anything for granted that includes this isu team paul rhoads will have them ready to play I promise you that much if ou comes out slow and sluggish and gives isu any hope they can win the game it could turn into fight. But im hoping none of this happens and we win by 28

  • BigJoeBrown says:

I know the game hasn’t started yet but, has OU called a timeout yet?

  • j l says:

You should mention jarvis west as well. Kid is dynamic. Averaging 20 yards per punt return.

hes the kid who had the reverse pass against KSU during their rally in the 2nd/3rd quarters.

    Headin to Ames
Always liked the Sooners in road white

    BOOMER!

  • OohRah Mama says:

He’s a name that we already know, but OC Mark Mangino is someone whose coaching I rather enjoy watching. It’s often interesting seeing what he comes up with.

  • Zack says:

Other name to…forget…cavil. He left the team. So norvell needs to take a short drive to westmoore and offer dahu.
Can we make a shirt that says “we will riot if dahu is not offered”

    • Sooner Ray says:

Wonder if he was told DGB is coming back?

      • Zack says:

Doubt it. I think he could just tell he’s not going to see the field here. Besides DGB could say anything he wants. I won’t believe he will be here next season until the season starts.

        • OUknowitscomin says:

I’d imagine that the push to get young WR’s on field lately gave him confirmation of that too. I’d bet Meade is seeing some solid reps in practice now, Todd too for that matter. If both of those ‘tall’ WR’s are ahead of him….well

  • OUknowitscomin says:

How long into game until Mangino goes to wide splits…..anyone? over/under?

  • Ryan says:

OU would be undefeated with Mangino as offensive coordinator. No doubt in my mind.

  • Chris White says:

EJ Bibbs attacking our linebackers is what I’m afraid of. Hopefully we can play aggressive and for Sam to throw inaccurate passes. We were worried about Sanchez and the big receivers against Notre Dame and he did fine plus I’m sure he has taken snaps against DGB in preparation for Saturday, and DGB is better than both combined. (IMO)

  • outsider says:

I hope the iowa state oline splits dont go from sideline to sideline….mike stoops wont know how to defend it….of course it will be a player execution problem, not knowing where to line up, or what keys to read when the tackles are spread sideline to sideline and we are supposed to be attacking, or reading, or whatever…timeout!

    • EasTex says:

What is your solution to the wide splits?

      • outsider says:

Put your fastest players in the gaps and exploit the hole so the fat guys have to move to block you. Lineup in some eagle and double eagle formations when blitzing. Send a safety up the A and B gaps ever once in a while. Maybe even have guys moving around presnap up to the snap of the ball. Or call a TIMEOUT!

        • EasTex says:

The timeout thing is worn out, time for a new meme.
As for your approach do you not think the defensive coaches with untold cumulative years of experience haven’t considered all possible responses? Looking at our remaining schedule I would be very surprised to see it again since there isn’t one QB on the list that can hurt us with their feet. If they should see it again, I have confidence they will be prepared.

          • outsider says:

So how much of a raise do you think the school should give the coaches this year?? I’ll give you a….Timeout! To think about it, but now im all out of timeOUts.
If you dont think baylor is gonna have wide splits to slow down the pass rush your crazy!

You cant spell timeOUt without OU

          • EasTex says:

You’re right, no team should ever call a time out and a stat should be kept for the teams with the most unused time outs and be used to determine a team’s success.
No I don’t think Baylor will, not with their scatback QB and no playbook approach. I wish they would though, as Coach Montgomery talked about that formation in this week’s Sooner Playbook with Toby Rowland and what they did against KST to force them to tighten back up.
You could learn a lot from listening to real coaches.

          • outsider says:

Please enlighten us on what “tighten back up” means, for those of us who purposely missed the show. To me that just coach speak for we are playing iowa state, so we are going to look great again. But im all ears to hear about everything youve learned from listening to a radio show.

          • EasTex says:

            It was a tv show.
Since you didn’t see it and hear what he had to say you will just have to continue to bask in your limited knowledge.

          • outsider says:

Maybe you should watch Dean Blevins show too, and get even more “coached up” after all blevins was a player. I never realized you HAD to watch coaches shows to know anything. I hope the other teams coaches werent watching, they might figure out how to beat us. I mean your even smarter now since you saw it right? You should apply for the head coaching job at your local middle school. You could build a Dynasty now!

          • EasTex says:

I will learn a lot more about what the OU coaches are doing from listening to them than you. Coach Montgomery’s explanation on the adjustment they made was perfectly clear. In your infinite wisdom you did notice that KST closed their splits…right?
Unlike you I don’t pretend to be a coach and have my own business to run. I don’t need advice from an ankle biter like you to do that and the coaches don’t (and shouldn’t) use your advice.

          • outsider says:

You Truly are a fucking moron lol. I never said i was a coach. You asked the queation dumbass, i simply anwsered it the best I could….and now you think im a wannabe coach huh. Smh. Some business you are “running” when you spend most of your time on here cocksucker!
if you are so smart answer my question? What did the coaches do to “tighten it up”? You dont know…your just parroting what you heard on a tv show. I sure hope you dont run your “business” like you run your mouth little east texas bitch.

      • OUknowitscomin says:

I watched Tex/KSU game, but didn’t remember them using them against Tex. Did you watch? I also didn’t notice a single pop pass/run play ran by KSU either. Wish I hadn’t deleted it. But Tex seemed to handle them pretty well overall. Especially when getting no help from their offense.

        • EasTex says:

Nossir, only watch Texsa when they play the Sooners and in rare circumstances when there is absolutely nothing else on and my dvr is empty.
The wide split illustrates that the offense is afraid of the edge rush. It is also an ambush for the defense if the QB can run. Ambushes are to be avoided. The solution? I can’t tell you, I’m not a coach and don’t play one on the internet.
