Open Post | Monday, Aug. 15th

Taquon Graham: The Sooners made a big impression on 2017 DE Taquon Graham (Temple, TX) when he visited Norman earlier this summer, with the OU coaches selling Graham on playing Charles Tapper’s old position. Following that visit, there were folks around Graham who indicated the Sooners had perhaps overtaken Texas as the favorite to land Graham’s commitment.

Graham himself also told TFB that Oklahoma had indeed put themselves in a good position, while indicating that he would like to announce his decision before the summer ends. However, since that visit/conversation we now get the sense that decision will be delayed.

TFB spoke with someone close to Graham over the weekend to see where things stand now that the post visit high has worn off some. Although Graham appears to be intent of visiting USC prior to making a decision, the distance could very well end up making it difficult for the Trojans to be a real factor. So this will likely be an OU vs. UT battle.

So what is Graham waiting on?

Like several other recruits in Texas, we’re told Graham is waiting to see how the Longhorns look on the field here in a couple weeks. Graham’s mother is a long time Texas fan and TFB’s source mentioned that while she has told Taquon she will support him wherever he goes, at the end of the day she is a Longhorn fan and would prefer he stay closer to home.

Incidentally, a couple other recruits that are also really looking to see what the Horns do early on this season are DT Marvin Wilson and WR Omar Manning, both of whom are top OU targets as well. If Texas shows marked improvement on the field, then the Red River Rivalry (or whatever we are calling it now) is going to be a game that could go a long way towards determining the outcome of some big recruiting battles.

With OU only taking one defensive lineman last year, the battle for guys like Graham and Wilson in this 2017 class are significant. The Sooners really need to have a lot of on-field success to keep the momentum they’ve built going. – (Super K)

Defensive Starters: Oklahoma is now more than half way through fall camp, so we figured now would be as good a time as any to go through what the starting rotation currently is and where it looks like it’s headed for kickoff in Houston.

Secondary

The secondary is pretty much set. The Sooners only needed to fill one starting spot, which was the CB position vacated by Zack Sanchez. We fully expect Dakota Austin to be the starter against Houston. We do believe, however, that the coaches are high on a couple other CBs as well, so Austin will need to play well in order to keep that starter’s job.

CB – Dakota Austin
CB – Jordan Thomas
S – Ahmad Thomas
S – Steven Parker

Linebackers

This was a unit where the Sooners are forced to replace three starters in Dom Alexander (ILB), Eric Striker (OLB) and Devante Bond (OLB).

The vacant ILB spot is expected to be filled by Tay Evans, which certainly comes as no surprise. But JUCO transfer Emmanuel Beal and Curtis Bolton have both had good camps and could provide some real depth on the inside.

As expected, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo is poised to take over the main outside linebacker spot. And while the outside backer positions are typically referred to as ‘Jack’ and ‘Sam,’ it’s probably more accurate with respect to OU to think of them simply as ‘field’ and ‘boundary.’

If you’d like to observe this for yourself, take a look at last years OU/Tennessee game where the Sooners played in their base defense with Striker and Bond most of the time. You’ll note that while in the 3-3-5, Striker will align on different sides of the ball. Where in the base defense, he plays to the ‘field’ side.

The Sooners played Will Johnson almost exclusively as their other field OLB (nickel – aligned to the passing strength or drop side) in the spring. And while Caleb Kelly and Kapri Doucet are coming on as guys who can play that position at a more traditional size, Johnson will certainly be relied upon heavily in the spread/pass happy Big 12. This is especially the case since the Sooners face more 10 personnel than any other personnel grouping.

ILB – Jordan Evans
ILB – Tay Evans
OLB – Ogbonnia Okoronkwo
OLB/Nickel (vs. 10 personnel) – Will Johnson
OLB (vs. bigger sets) – Caleb Kelly/Kapri Doucet

Defensive Line

The Sooners will only replace one starter on their defensive line in Charles Tapper. Last year Tapper played primarily on the right side of the line with Matt Dimon opposite him on the left. Charles Walker, however, played plenty of snaps behind Dimon and, when healthy, was arguably OU’s most disruptive defensive lineman.

New d-line coach Calvin Thibodeaux is rotating a group of 6+ guys in practice right now with a number of the “back-ups” getting first team reps at various times. So expect to see multiple guys, especially someone like Neville Gallimore who we’ve told you has been playing at multiple different spots along the line so far in fall camp. But as it stands today, we’d anticipate your starters to be:

DE/DT – Charles Walker
DE/DT – Matt Dimon
NG – Mathew Romar

Really need the defense to set the tone this year

  • cush creekmont says:

    …find the OP!

  • Sooner Ray says:

We should have some crazy depth on defense this season.

  • Brian says:

We better win the RRR! TEXAS SUCKS!!!

    • Sooner Ray says:

It’s gonna be bigger than just a game.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

There really is no excuse for us not being on at least a 4-game win streak with whorn. Those losses have been of significant consequence nationally, but even more so in recruiting Texas. There have been a lot of D-linemen that went to the dark side that we could have significantly used. We *must* destroy them this October.

      • Birddawg says:

Texsa always plays their best game against us. If we did the same, we would’ve blown them out.
They will again incur early season losses that will knock them out of CFP contention. Only thing left to play for is beating OU.
OU needs to play their best game and its not even close

    • cush creekmont says:

Every #%&$%@$ year! Not just for recruiting, but to maintain world order!

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

OU has won the B12 3 times in the last 10 seasons while losing to Texsa. ’06, ’08, ’15.

That being said, they need to annihilate their hopes in the 1st quarter, en route to a 63-10 win. Oh and maybe get Chuck fired so Marvin Wilson and co eliminate them

    • Stephen Dale says:

OU has had the better team each of the past three seasons and has only 1 lucky win to show for it…Texas seems to play their best game of the season against the Sooners while OU ‘sleepwalks’ till the games are out of reach.

  • Mark_in_VA says:

It just struck me, looking at that secondary: we likely will be filling all 4 positions with new starters next year. Yuck.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

Luckily recruiting for those positions has been more than solid. I know what you mean though. You never know how a kid is going to perform until they are out there.

    • cush creekmont says:

Perhaps part of the reason for the new “rotating starters” – get some experience outside of the main four.

    • wolfbuilder says:

This is a big reason cooks wants to rotate backup, so very important they get real game time snaps

  • NWA Sooner says:

I’m getting excited to watch this defense. Although they lack experience in many places I feel that they may be an upgrade in physicality/athleticism.

    • Scott says:

      Im definitely excited.

    • roygbell says:

Not something big, but we don’t lack experience in “MANY” places. We really lack experience in two spots. We can field starters on the DL and we have some good depth there. The secondary, including Nickle is all former starters. The only spot you might think is not fielded by a starter is Austin. Yet, Austin has played a lot and is pretty darn solid. Austin filed in for Sanchez very well last year.

That just leaves the LBer slots. Evans is a three year starter and Obo isn’t a newcomer. The only reason Obo doesn’t have starting experience is the two guys, Striker and Bond, who were ahead of him. So, we really are only replacing two LBer spots with new guys. Obo is a great talent and I have lots of confidence in him.

My view is that we have more holes in the offense than the defense. This 2016 OU defense may turn out to be the best in quite a few years.

    • Daryl says:

Totally agree with you. The players abilities are not going to be the problem. If this team falters it will be because of a lack mental prep and not playing with a chip on their shoulder. If they listen to all the “you guys are great” talk they will have a rough year. If they choose to prove something and play with an edge they could be improved from last year.

  • Matt says:

excited to see these new guys on defense. I’m really excited to see how they use Will Johnson, I think outside of Romar he may be the most underrated player on the defense. PFF gave Johnson the highest coverage grade on the team last year, higher even than J. Thomas. They did say that J. Thomas has the lower QB rating allowed though.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

A part of me wants UT to be improved for the sake of the Big 12, but maybe not this year, as it relates to OU’s recruiting. Much like with OU’s early schedule, we’ll know a lot about UT by the time the RRR comes around. Tough early schedule for them as well.

  • Spitting Bull says:

    Gold! Thank you so much!

  • Scott says:

I cant wait to smack texsa this year.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

so Deberry is backing up Obo?

    • wolfbuilder says:

This is the way I read it, kinda sux to see by far one of the highest ranked kids in his class get passed by a juco and Freshman, but then again hopefully Doucet and kelly r that special and Ricky will just take over when obo leaves, also I just don’t know if I see Kelly starting the first game mainly cause kelly has been out with his knée so long plus he is an 18 year old kid

      • ZW_in_Austin says:

Ricky has yet to play in a CFB game. That experience goes a long way – he will come around. Anyways, aren’t we trying to be in a position where our starters are Juniors and Seniors that were highly ranked recruits in HS?

        • wolfbuilder says:

Yes but it looks like he was passed by a juco and true freshman which isnt good but hopefully KD and Kelly r just thay special

          • SoonerFan92 says:

Those two positions require different skill sets. Deberry and Obo are different players from Kelly and Doucet.

          • wolfbuilder says:

See I disagree Doucet is just like obo to me, a skilled pass rusher not sure on Kelly but ricky is not as flexible or as quick and fast

          • SoonerFan92 says:

Doucet is a smaller more agile linebacker that will be asked to drop into coverage more than Obo/Deberry. Doucet and Kelly both are better equipped for covering receivers/TE’s.

          • Boom says:

They why do they play different positions?

          • wolfbuilder says:

Ricky is more physical then the other 3, u don’t have to be the same type of player to play the same position just like u might have a tackle that is better at run blocking then pass blocking

          • Boom says:

Ricky is more physical – have you seen this in practice. Obo is bigger so I’m not taking away from Ricky but coaches see something more in Obo. Kelly/Doucet play the Sam so they have different responsibilities.

          • wolfbuilder says:

I’m saying ricky should start just saying it’s sad one of our top players a big time recruit that has been there a year is getting passed by a true freshman and a first year juco, cause rick played behind opposite of obo all spring and behind bond all last year now they moved to first year guys there and ricky is now behind obo, like I said I’m not saying ricky is better just sad hes has got recruited over it looks like

          • SoonerFan92 says:

He was behind Obo in the Spring. He and Obo will be playing that position for their pass rushing and outside containment. Doucet and Kelly weren’t here in the Spring so they couldn’t play there in the spring game.

          • wolfbuilder says:

Love it when people want to act like they know something about football or act like they know it all, go watch the spring game, ENOUGH SAID

          • SoonerFan92 says:

            Are you referring to yourself?

          • wolfbuilder says:

From what I have seen u post sir it is u, like I said heck out the spring game sir obo on one side Ricky on the other only and idiot would try to argue with that obo played field ricky was on boundary

          • Boom says:

Maybe they were trying Ricky out at the Sam position to see how he did. Spring games are for evaluating newer players. Heck, if we are going after the spring game, then why the heck isn’t Brooks starting at RB. I’m not trying to stir up anything but I guess coaches see something in Obo.

          • wolfbuilder says:

Lol sure if it makes yall feel like yall know I will go with it fact is he got passed by 2 first year guys in the program and 1 being a true freshman

          • SoonerFan92 says:

The point that I was making in the first place is that there are two different positions that require different skill sets. No need to get huffy if a few people disagree with you. And you can’t take the spring game as a sample that says Deberry is supposed to play opposite of Deberry. Doucet and Kelly weren’t on campus yet.

          • Boom says:

Funny thing is I’m not disagree with him. Ricky is playing the Jack position NOW and he’s 2nd team. Spring doesn’t mean a thing when fall starts and hes in a different position.

Kelly & Doucet are playing the Sam position so again, we are on the same page as it’s two different positions.

          • wolfbuilder says:

They r both olb/dends, same position little different response abilitys, easy to interchange not like going from inside to outside or outside to inside

          • wolfbuilder says:

Both positions r the same with a little different response abilitys it not like he moved to inside lb or cb different yes, interchangeable

          • wolfbuilder says:

Not huffy just showing the facts ricky has been passed at the olb spot sam or jack, he played behind bond last year and has been passed. Both spots r olb/dends same type of position with a little difference in there response abilitys, I don’t care who starts never do just saying it’s sad for all the star gazes he is getting passed

          • Boom says:

Position A and Position B. Two different positions. Period. DeBerry was highly recruited but doesn’t mean that will translate to the college level. Not all 5* guys go 1st in the draft. I’m not arguing with you but you seen to put the two different positions into one.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

He’s not necessarily getting recruited over if these new players are coming in and going to start at another position than what teh coached brought Deberry in for. With all that being said, I have read a few comments in here where he might not be where they want him to be menatlly. I think once he gets the mental aspect of it down it well help jump him light years ahead of his current abilities.

          • Dick Bump says:

How does anyone know? They haven’t played yet ?

  • Scott says:

This defense has so much potential to be great. We finally have the right players for the scheme Mike Stoops wants.

  • SamSooner says:

As for texsa, let’s be honest: Strong is not recruiting as well as he would like. In my opinion, he’s been very lucky. I mean, he was out recruited by OU to land Daniels. Strong got lucky because of a family relationship with Daniels’ parents. He got lucky with Baylor’s debacle. He could land Wilson this year, who knows. But that luck is going to run out, very soon.

Strong can not keep making these late offers and not piss someone off.

Finally, the OU staff is working their butts off on the recruiting trail. That is eventually going to get them some results with the DTs, based on their work.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

He may not survive the season

      They could be 1-4

      • SoonerMagic76 says:

Seems possible bordering on probable that they start that way

        • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, their schedule doesn’t line up very well for Strong to keep his job. ND, a cupcake, then back to back road games at Cal and OSU, before the game with us. There is a decent chance of 1-4 after the RRS. If that happens I don’t see them recovering enough to keep his job even if he makes it to the end of the season. They supposedly have a lot of talent but it’s young and they are really short in some spots like QB. I wouldn’t want to be a coach depending on a FR QB to save my job.

          • SoonerMagic76 says:

Agreed, doesn’t like up well. After the OU game, he’ll still have almost sure losses to TCU and Baylor on the schedule, along with TTU, KSU, and WVU, which are probably all 50/50 games. Going to be difficult

          • SamSooner says:

And if that QB get injured, wow!

          • Stephen Dale says:

Swoopes, the proposed starter, is a junior or senior….

          • paganpink says:

I’ll be darned! I thought you was a toad!?

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

End the year vs TCU and @ KSU a game or two after the RRSO. Making a bowl will be very difficult

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

He may not survive the season

      They could be 1-4

    • Scott says:

      Exactly Sam.

    • Matt says:

hearing from friends who follow TexAgs religiously, apparently Red McCombs pocketbook had quite a bit to do with UT’s recruiting turn around last year.

      • SamSooner says:

        Oh, really?

        • Matt says:

yeah now to be fair TexAgs isn’t the most fair and unbiased source but apparently one highly rated recruit in particular was seen driving a very expensive brand new vehicle shortly after signing day when it seemed highly unlikely that his family could afford that given their current situation. Also, should be noted that said player was committed to A&M at one point so they were particularly upset about his commitment to UT so that could really color how they saw things.

          • Brian says:

So Texas just paid more than A&M? Got it.

          • Matt says:

haha and now A&M is pissed about it..yes

          • SamSooner says:

It wouldn’t surprise me at all. I just don’t believe Strong is going to get the results. He seems to operating in a mode of desperation. If I’m on his staff, and the losses start to pile up, I’d be worried.

Just based on his recruiting, he’s going to try to win with defense. Good luck with that.

          • Stephen Dale says:

Strong has put together two VERY strong classes : 2015 & 2016. If he survives this season, Texas should be very good again in 2017 and beyond….and Strong should get a contract renewal at that point. In fact, IF Texas makes a bowl game after this season, Strong will probably get extended………another victory over OU this season could solve a lot of heartburn in Austin…

          • Birddawg says:

When was the last time Texas had a “bad” class?
            They need a QB.
            They need production.
They cant have another losing season. Regardless of the two classes they need wins or Strong is gone.
I think they will be better this coming year.
But having a True Freshmen 8-4,9-3.. is the ceiling with a 5-7 floor.
TF QB… Lots of good hype from Bucehele..but college D coordinators can make mince meat out of a Fresh QB.

          • KJ1123 says:

They always have good recruiting classes. But if they want to win the off-season every year and not win the conference, they hey, more power to them I guess. Charlie is 11-14 I dont care if you’re the best recruiter in the nation, 3 years under .500 will get you fired.

          • Matt says:

there’s two national championships every year. One in January and one in February. Only 1 actually counts for something but a lot of teams and fans still want to win the one in February.

          • Dick Bump says:

Good recruiting classes don’t necessarily translate into having good players, as you think it would. How many players were drafted from UT?

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Doesn’t surprise me at all. I’ve got a client who went to Boise state and even they gave him money.

    • OmorganU says:

If Strong is out after this year, I think there is a strong possibility that Herman gets the job. I think that would be very good for Texas and not so good for the rest of the league.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

That is a scenario I really don’t want. Much like we managed to drag Mack Brown on for a few extra years we need to do the same for Chuckie. We don’t need for Texsa to have a great coach.

      • SamSooner says:

        It won’t matter.

      • J J says:

I think its interesting how much love Herman is getting based on 1 year. and don’t throw in his QB wonders 1 year at tOSU, Urban won with a FB playing QB at Florida. System.

        • j l says:

Compare 2014 to 2015 ohio state. They dropped almost 10 points per game.

Now compare 2015 houston to 2014 houston, bump of almost 12 points per game,

Herman was a HUGE factor in their offenses.

        • SamSooner says:

I think the QB play that year was unbelievable and unbelievably lucky. Both QBs fell off something horrible. As I’ve mentioned in my tOSU spring game breakdown, J.T. Barrett was responsible for 3 of the 4 interceptions; he forced a lot of throws. I would not want to see that happening with my senior QB.

          • J J says:

JT is actually not very experienced. He missed a ton of time in HS & in college injured… He’s not a typical senior returning starter

    • RDC212 says:

Strong pulls in a lot of guys at the last minute. Don’t be surprised to see him flip several players in the 10 days or so leading up to NSD.

  • SamSooner says:

As for texsa, let’s be honest: Strong is not recruiting as well as he would like. In my opinion, he’s been very lucky. I mean, he was out recruited by OU to land Daniels. Someone mentioned “Oklahoma invented it” shirts on the news. I took it upon myself. See what y’all think of these. Front and back shown. Cleats shirt is “Shirt 1”, Hat shirt is “Shirt 2”

  • SamSooner says:

According to Rivals, texsa’s class is ranked 57th, with 7 commitments. It seems. It seems like a lot of recruits are waiting to see what texsa is going to do. They won’t wait long if they are high on other schools and spots are starting fill up.

  • Krys Allen says:

So whats up with the BOOM shirts? I tried to order one a month ago an it never shipped and I just got notified about a refund… Should I re-order it?

  • hemisooner says:

Couple of questions. Who is backing Obo up? Gallimore backing up the 1, 3, and 5 tech? I know he hustles but Dimon starting concerns me. Just don’t think he is OU good. Why Walker didn’t start over him baffles me.

    • Birddawg says:

Sounds like our dline depth will be a huge advantage. 6 bodies for 3 positions… that’s fresh legs in the 4th. who starts doesn’t really matter. They will all have opportunities to play.

    • Brian says:

Deberry is backing Obo up…Walker didn’t start and play a ton of snaps because we didn’t want him leaving early last year! Plus, he was playing behind Tapper more than behind Dimon, I believe.

      • hemisooner says:

Walker backup Dimon last year. When we played Clemson Ward had to go inside to help give a dimon a break

    • SamSooner says:

Town Hall is tonight at 7pm. The TFB will be taking our questions, Hemi.

How have you been? Where have you been?

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

Dimon has put on some weight that should help him.

    • KJ1123 says:

The rotation is DJ, AR, Romar (when he’s back), CW, Dimon, Galiimore. Ricky backs up Obo for the most part.

  • Scott says:

I got so many questions ready for the town hall meeting.

  • RDC212 says:

Not thrilled with Dimon continuing to take a ton of snaps. He’s just too undersized and gets man handled by bigger physical linemen. We saw it several times last year against Tennessee, Texsa, and Clemson.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

      He gained weight.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

      He’s up to 275

    • Katyboomer says:

I really like Dimon I have watched him play in H.S. and for the Sooners. There is a reason he plays and still has his starting job even though 3 different highly paid college coach’s. Dimon does what is asked of him and does it better then anyone we have or have had on campus or he would not be 3 year starter. I keep hearing that some on here want him replaced. Other then getting worn out in the playoff game can you tell me when he had a bust? I think Dimon should be getting a lot more respect from sooner nation. He is like the Rodney Dangerfield of the DL.

      • KJ1123 says:

Dimon’s the smartest DL they have. Understands schemes, alignments, down and distances, makes adjustments etc.

        • Birddawg says:

Walker is going to have a lot of attention on him this year. Tapper/Striker gone..
Guys like Dimon, Gallimore, Romar, Obo need to win their one v ones walker got last year.

          • KJ1123 says:

I expect some good changes this week. Week one is down, no more feeling out, guys on the bubble need to start showing out THIS week.

          • Birddawg says:

Is this the last week until they start their prep for UH?

          • KJ1123 says:

Yeah this is it for fall camp, school starts next week, it should be all UH starting Monday.

          • Birddawg says:

Remember last year, Safeties were rotating in/out .. Oline was rotating bodies trying to find the best 5… QB battle
Way ahead of that this year.
Last week of fall camp… Time to turn it up!

          • KJ1123 says:

Exactly, I think the coaches have an idea of the lineups but they really want a handful of guys to really step it up this week.

      • Jpsooner23 says:

Thank you. Tired of those 3 games and his name being lumped together. He’s assignment sound and that matters.

I love how the D was to blame for performances in each of those games. Funny though we only scored 17 in regulation in each of them. O line and O in general was WAY bigger issue than Dimon, etc.

      • RDC212 says:

Go back and watch him against any team with a big physical line. He couldn’t do anything against Tennessee, Texsa, and Clemson.

        • Katyboomer says:

Who on Defense stood out to you in those games as having a great performance? I think the team as a whole struggled. You seem to really not like the play of Dimon. I know some of the things he is asked to do for his defensive assignments. It might surprise you what he’s asked to do and how well he really does it. It’s hard for us as fans to know what the game plan is for a certain set or play and if the player is set lose or if the player has to maintain a lane so another player can be set lose to cause disruption. I am just saying let’s not judge the play of one of our players unless we know all that is asked of said player.

          • RDC212 says:

Then what the eff are we doing here exactly? I can make an assessment when I see a guy look like he’s on skates several times a game. Same was true of Kasitati. This was never more evident than the few times we got to see Overton last year. That guy man handled people when he got a chance to play. Walker and Romar also had good play against Tennessee as well as I recall. Dimon gets pushed around a lot.

          • Katyboomer says:

Without getting into details, Dimon’s man was locked up while he was “getting pushed around”. It allowed Striker/Bond to be in one on one situations a lot. it’s a team sport and there are many things that go into a game plan that we don’t know about. That’s all I am trying to say.

          • RDC212 says:

Sorry, but you’re just making excuses.

          • Katyboomer says:

Ok, cool. My info comes from the source.

          • RDC212 says:

Lots of people have “sources”. Have a nice day. Boomer sooner.

          • Katyboomer says:

            Cool.

      • Dick Bump says:

He’s made a lot of plays since he has been at OU. I’m not sure why he gets so much criticism either. Obviously, the coaches think he is “OU good”.

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

I really like the fact that most all of the defensive starter positions have been “won” early. I also like the fact that they want to rotate in 17 or 18 guys depending upon the offensive style of the opponent. That is something we’ve long coveted, but never had. I really am getting a good vibe on this year’s defense. I like where we are headed.

  • GrandeBass says:

This is Grande checking in. It’s currently 10:15 in Tulsa Oklahoma and Texsa still sucks!
    19 days boys! BOOMER!

  • BigJoeBrown says:

A great great OP, a nice way to start the day!

  • Randy says:

As the season gets closer and the depth charts are lining up I am more and more concerned with CB and S depth we all know the young guys at S and they do have some experience but I hope losing Byrd doesnt come back to bit us. CB is the most concerning spot on the roster not sure on talent JT has it somedays and not somedays, DA I feel good about but will struggle some early and most stay healthy which leads me to the depth and there is none. MQ has not played there and Mbanasor still seems like a S to me I hope I am wrong. Parnell Motley seems like the most likely to play this year from the FR and has everything you need in the CB spot but experience.

    • Jason Vos says:

Losing Byrd ? He hardly played, the young guys were ahead of him even last year

      • Randy says:

He played a lot. But he was not what they wanted there. Should have moved to NB or LB (which they did but earlier). See PJ Mbanasor (should be a S) See Matt Dimon playing because of experience.

        • Boom says:

no, after UT game he didn’t sniff the field unless it was STs. Helped too as they moved Parker to SS from NB and inserted Will Johnson as the NB. Things clicked and then they moved Byrd to LB in the spring which is when he left.

          • cush creekmont says:

Will Johnson’s play and Parker being sooooooo much better sealed the door for Byrd ever going beyond mop up – early on, the coaches apparently didn’t see what they had in Johnson.

          • Randy says:

Yeah, the season could very well depend on how Will Johnson, Kapri Doucet and Caleb Kelly play.

          • Randy says:

You are right.. Just like having that experience back there he was talented but maybe just not in the right spot.

      • BigJoeBrown says:

Speaking of Hatari Byrd, makes me want to wish him luck…. https://twitter.com/HBizzy559/status/760906394698604544

  • Raath says:

Hey KJ! What’s happening with Jordan Wade, Overton and Lampton? Those guys bring desired size I would think you want along the DL. Was really hoping they would be in the conversation. To run a true 3-4, you need DE’s bigger than the Dimon’s and Ward’s (275 lb. each).

    • KJ1123 says:

Wade is getting some run with the first group. Que and Lampkin weren’t, I think Que could work his way into the rotation but he needs to really make some strides this week. I think Lampkin still doesn’t trust his knee 100% which is normal, the more time he’s removed from surgery the better he’ll get imo. Yeah I’d like to see some DE’s as well 6-5 6-6 290ish.

      • Randy says:

Could they redshirt Que, will they try ?

      • cush creekmont says:

Que not performing above 3rd string is a surprise to me. He made some nice disruptive plays last year. I just assumed with another year, he would be tearing things up. I do not want to disparage the young man, but I do wonder “what” is he doing wrong or not doing right?

Not all on you to know the answers KJ – asking K, Jordan, Brandon, and all the TFB world –

        • Maverick says:

From what I’ve seen/been told he’s not quite as explosive and isn’t as quick laterally as some others. Our DL is stacked.

          • cush creekmont says:

Mav – Others have progressed a lot more? Or he has gone backwards?

          • Maverick says:

I think we just have a ton of quality and they all have slightly different skill sets. I think Gallimore getting fit has probably moved him past Que, but it’s a daily battle. I think they’re all good and all close to equal past the vets.

        • KJ1123 says:

I dont think it’s a knock on Que, it’s just everyone gets better. You can’t relax on this level, if your drive falls off even a little bit, someone will overtake you.

          • cush creekmont says:

Just seemed like in games last year, the three that got thru most impressively were Tap, Walker, and Que – maybe the “other” points of play that don’t show are higher for others.

      • Maverick says:

I noticed Big Country didn’t get any reps Saturday. I wonder if he’ll last all fall, especially since he almost left already.

      • Fear The Magic says:

Im que comienza a preocuparse de Lampkin. Su videos pareció grande pero ahora pienso que él podría terminar por ser un fracaso. Los Im que escriben este en el español porque sé que él doesnt dice el español y yo dont quieren que él lea este y venir dio una paliza a mí.

PS. Thank God for google translate.

      • cush creekmont says:

Thanks KJ! Sounds like I am building to a “seminar question” on what each of the 2-deep, 6 inside DLs bring and what each needs to improve.

  • J J says:

this is gonna be a long 19 days

  • Katyboomer says:

Just think if Baker, Basquine and Wren all start in a game this year, that will be three players that were walkon’s when they came to OU. They will all be starters for which should be a top 10 Off. in the country. Great coaching,Great talent evaluation,Player heart, Player retention or luck?

    • Bob Edwards says:

I think that, if the coaches had recognized that talent to begin with they would have offered schollies. I would give the coaches props for giving them the chance and helping them develop, but would say most of it is on the players.

    • Maverick says:

I’d say luck, general bad talent evaluation due to coaches overrating size/speed, and kids being late bloomers. Oh and hard work. That always helps. And players like John Humphrey inexplicably transferring.

    • Katyboomer says:

I forgot about Baxter as a walkon as well.

  • KellyB says:

Thank you Brainiacs for the great writeup, as always! Any word on Ashton Julious from Lackwanna CC? He’s mammoth and thought he could crack the OL rotation.

  • Maverick says:

One thing to keep in mind about Bob and Mike Stoops, they value consistency/reliability over almost everything else out of defensive players.

If you can’t play assignment sound football, you won’t play a whole lot. This is why guys like Dimon end up paying so much. Not to knock Dimon, he’s been a good player for us and I expect him to have a big year, but he may not have as much potential as other guys.

Obo this year really needs to pick up this part of his game. He could be all conference good if he plays his assignments consistently. He’s a very talented pass rusher off the edge.

    • RDC212 says:

True. But I’m just saying that Dimon and guys like him won’t be able to handle the teams were likely to see in the CFP. Reliability is good and all, but it ain’t good enough when you’re simply out athleted.

      • Maverick says:

Agreed. Have to pick your poison almost. Either in position and can’t make a play, or out of position and then it doesn’t matter if you can make a play or not.

I think it’s fair to say that anyone we’d see in the CFP would have equal if not more talent than us.

        • RDC212 says:

That’s been the biggest difference in our teams over the last few years imo. Recruiting was not where it needed to be to beat the elite teams consistently. It’s nice to see stoops and co is getting back to that. I think he wins #8 within the next few years.

    • bommer85 says:

but unless the player is a complete moron, sometimes you have to put the best talent out there on the field and let them play ball. don’t make the players over think it

      • Maverick says:

Well no one has accused Mike’s defenses of being simple. It’s fairly complex, which imo is part of the problem.

    • LBS says:

This can’t be overstated. Stoops has always had a track record on defense (and even offense to a lesser extent) that all the physical ability in the world won’t get you on the field if you’re a liability to the team. Now that he has depth to push that point again, I don’t suspect the margin of error will be very large for a lot of these guys.

RBs who can’t pass block or fumble, WRs that can’t or won’t block, CBs that don’t tackle well, LBs that play out of position, and DL that miss their assignments won’t get much game time regardless of how fast or athletic they might be.

      • Maranatha846 says:

Agree with most, but Sanchez couldn’t tackle a receiver in a phone booth and he played all the time.

        • LBS says:

True, but to be fair, he avg between 40/45 tackles a season which isn’t awful. Sanchez really didn’t make all that many mistakes, its just that after his freshman season HE was the one without safety help thanks to zero depth at CB placing freshman opposite of him so his mistakes almost always were big plays. But it probably had more to do with his 13 ints in two seasons despite missing two games each year.
He catches a lot of flack, but people forget that he had one season with Colvin and then was suddenly thrust into the leadership role back there with a freshman safety to boot. I think he did better than we could have ever hoped for.

        • SoonerinLondon says:

The kid had more ints then anybody but DKR, and probably would have passed him if he had stayed. He added more than he took away.

          • Boom says:

Be hard to beat Ricky Dixon on the INT’s but he was good. His tackling was good, not great. I got to hand it to him as he played a lot with a hurt shoulder and that doesn’t make tackling easy.

          • SoonerinLondon says:

I think DKR is the leader, with 18, and Zack has 15. Would have had a good shot at taking the record this year.

          • Boom says:

            Rickey Dixon – 17 INT’s DKR/Dixon/Zack = all good.

What I will say, the QBs are a LOT better than yesterday’s QBs so I think with the passing game today and better QBs it’s harder to get these numbers. Zack did a great job. Interesting stats, thanks

          • SoonerinLondon says:

In fairness, they pass more now too, so Zack had more chances than the old guys. Either way, they were all pretty good.

    • ALar03 says:

reliability rubs off on other players.. Younger kids are seeing someone play that may not be as talented but they are smart enough to realize the reason that they are playing is because of their intangibles… Then their work ethic changes and they spread it to other players!

  • Zach Evans says:

Gotta love that Dede is saying this about Mykel Jones when today was his first practice back https://twitter.com/brettcope/status/765215545817899008

  • RBear says:

Who was it, at WR, that had a kid brother, also a WR/KR type, that didn’t make it as a walk-on, had grade issues or something… the brother was really small but had good film.

  • Matt says:

Urban Meyer, IMO, is pretty clearly the second best coach in America. If the Sooners can beat him, I have to think they can beat everyone else in the big 12 and the first round of the playoff. So basically I’m saying, Sept 18th we should know if they’ll be in the NCG or not, barring injury of course.

    • RBear says:

Lincoln Riley has his work cut out for him, early.

      • Matt says:

I think its more about Mike and Bob. If they can clear up the issues defending option runs from last year, its going to be a great season.

        • RBear says:

so long as we don’t go too deep into the O Playbook vs Houston, I agree

          • Chris White says:

I personally think we get into some trouble when we limit our playbook to much

          • RBear says:

True, it’s also a bit of a catch 22 that early in the season in that we don’t necessarily want to show everything vs Houston ’cause tOSU is 2 weeks later… IDK, just win baby!

          • SamSooner says:

            What’s up, RBear.

I’m a fan of acting like a peacock. Show them everything. They’ll spend their entire practice time stopping what you do, and the downtime thinking about how they are exposed to something else.

          • RBear says:

sounds good to me, maybe I’m too caught up in the cliché

          • SamSooner says:

I’m probably in the minority with that line of thinking. The one thing that LR demonstrated to me, that set him apart from Josh, is that he would abandon the game plan if a team showed him something he could take advantage of.

          • soonerSD says:

He also seemed to have plays that he built-on to or added to as the season progressed. Plays where he added different options and /or wrinkles to them that baited the defense. I couldn’t name or point out any of these plays but I’m pretty certain I so some plays evolve throughout the season. Anyone else feel the same way?

          • Lane Gilstrap says:

I do too. I hate it.

          • Lane Gilstrap says:

I’m not sure the playbook has changed much since last year. I also hate thinking we need to not open the playbook. We simply need to do whatever means necessary to win.

    • cush creekmont says:

    • Maverick says:

Yikes. This was kind of a train wreck imo. That sarcastic junk in the beginning felt really awkward. I get the point he was trying make, but this was a bizarre way to say it.

  • RBear says:

Off topic as far as Sooner Football but, if anyone has a chance to get up to Miami, OK (NEO)or catch them somewhere on the road this year, it might be worth it- they had a HUGE signing class last year talent wise- could be some future Sooners in there.

  • Robert Boone says:

The fact that people are discussing and debating why people aren’t on the first or second teams and why others are starting means one thing……..depth. And thats a great thing to finally have.

    • thebigdroot says:

      And it’s almost football time.

    • albsooner says:

Robert – that is certainly one view. Another view is if you don’t have a clear cut starter, especially on the OL, then you are losing precious time to build the necessary chemistry. Similar to the old adage “if you have 2 QB’s you don’t have 1”. I tend to agree with you that comp and depth are necessary to build championship teams year in and year out. We have an opportunity in this area. Let’s hope you are right and the old adage is wrong.

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

I’m for adding schools not named Houston. Only having 10 teams means this conference will be perceived as weak for a long time. Playing a round robin schedule and having a CCG is just dumb.

        • Recondo says:

I agree. Only add UH if you boot BU.

        • cush creekmont says:

The 12-4+2 will still be perceived as weak WITH Houston and/or any teams currently available. Take the money. Don’t add teams. Play a silly CCG repeat for more money and get OUT of the “conference” as soon as the money and the invite line up for OUr school – the conference is NOT OUr primary concern!

          • SamSooner says:

            I agree.

If this report is true, that is proof of how networks manipulate conference alignment. If the networks are willing to this, they might also be willing to figure out how to resolve the GOR issue.

          • cush creekmont says:

That’s a thought, Sam. OU needs to get the sports network lawyers to collaborate on how to get the whole current system blown up to get to the 4 – league model (16/18 teams each)

edit – left out a word

          • SamSooner says:

I know it’s out of left field, that line of thinking, but I would present the dissolving the GOR as a deal breaker. For those who wonder why the network would care about resolving the Big XII GOR issue; well, to that I say, they’ve already illustrated they care.

          • cush creekmont says:

Sam – “…they’ve already illustrated they care (about the money)”
That is the driver, so get them to see the bigger money (where OU is out of this conference.).

    • cush creekmont says:

I like the way he jabs the typical pro-texsa writer with the cross outs. One more year of cross outs should make the 2017 pre-season version include a Chuck cross out too.

      • Malicong says:

I am a little torn on that. Wouldn’t mind Texsa continueing to suck (even at 12-0 they suck, but personal feelings aside…) but the Big XII loses respectability when they are down. If they move on from Charlie, they might get better. It would be hilarious if that same article is posted next year with a few additional cross-outs.

Super K – Dalton Rodriguez played very well (imo) in the spring game. Seem to have a nose for the ball etc. What is the knock on him or will he see the field.

    • Maverick says:

Not very likely at all. He did make a bunch of plays in the spring, but he’s not able to play in space as well as the others.

      • Will Narramore says:

At the 6’6 255 he’slisted at, he could potentially play on the DL then if all he’struggling with is playing in space

        • Maverick says:

I doubt it. He’s not built for that really. He should’ve played LT like we wanted him to from day one. He could be 6-6 305 by now and maybe pushing for a starting spot.

19 days till kickoff. All Americans at OU that wore 19 are Zac Henderson, Randy Hughes.

both were great players. Really impacted the game.

Dusty D was really talking up Gallimore today on the radio. Just confirming the TFB reports but if you listen to Dusty enough you can tell when he is really excited about a guy and I think he has a man crush on Gallimore.

  • Maverick says:

Interested to see how much time Demetri Flowers gets. I was really expecting him to be Trey Millard 2.0, but I’m not sure where he fits into Lincoln Riley’s offense.

    • Bob Edwards says:

I’m sure we will get him the ball more this year. /s/s/s/s/s/s

      • Maverick says:

I wasn’t really advocating for more carries, just seems too versatile and talented to play so little. What a good problem to have though.

    • Sooner4life says:

Was thinking the same thing. You would think the Mixon/Perine package would be displayed more which means that Flowers might have less time compared to last year.

    • cush creekmont says:

LR has too many toys with which to play. With the H backs/TE and the RBs/slots, he could line up in a wishbone with Dede and Andrews then split out two backs as slots – oh, wait, Barry did that with Aikman….

    • ZW_in_Austin says:

Save him for every trick play and every clutch, game-clinching touchdown catch.

    • Brien Brown says:

Mav call me crazy but I can see him being utilized a lot in the passing game he would be a Mark Andrews version 2 and I say that as he can create a lot of nightmares. But, I say this in feeling he will be a break out player for us this year, he has great size, hands, and speed for a guy his size. I hope that Riley gets it and sees it also he could be amazing.

  • Michael Hardy says:

Matt Dimon? I could swear he was being manhandled by the Clemson line.

    • RDC212 says:

      And Texsa, and Tennessee…

      • Brien Brown says:

The whole team looked pretty bad in all 3 games, except the 4th quarter and OT against Tennessee just saying!

      • Jpsooner23 says:

How about the offense in those 3? Blame to go around.

        • RDC212 says:

I don’t really see your point aside from misdirection. This conversation wasn’t about blaming the offense or defense for losses. It’s about assessing a player’s talent and ability to contribute at the level needed to win championships.

          • Jpsooner23 says:

We get it man. You don’t have to keep saying it. We all want JJ Watt at both ends but reality is we aren’t there for many reasons. Stop bashing Dimon. It’s old. He does more with less than most in this world. We all want more talent, but you got who you got this year. Lay off the kid. I bring up offense in those games because you and many others want to blame the defense and specific players on said defense for not being at the level of the other team. My point is the o line got shoved around as much or more than Dimon and the def in all 3 of those games. I get your point, we all do. We all want more, but the horse is dead. Like Sanchez last year, I see this crap going on all season and it’s irritating. Have a good day.

          • RDC212 says:

Settle down. I’m talking football. Not attacking Dimon personally. You want #8? That means not having guys like that on our starting DL. You don’t have to keep responding. If you don’t like it, keep scrolling.

          • RDC212 says:

Btw, I have gone after the OL plenty. Particularly Darlington, Kasitati, and St John.

    • Brien Brown says:

I’ve seen this same comment a lot, but, it has been 7 months since we have seen him, he could be bigger and stronger and well smarter which is what happens as you get older. Plus as long as he builds depth I am ok with it. Plus he can help with teams that are smaller and we rotate to the bigger guys against bigger teams. But, depth is key and he does bring that to the table.

      • KJ1123 says:

Yeah he was down to around 250 during the Clemson game, he got really sick toward the end of the season.

        • Brien Brown says:

I had heard he was sick. I think the kid can play, feel he has got a lot of negative comments towards him today. Mean I trust the coaches and who they think can play. In Stoops we trust.

          • KJ1123 says:

Yeah, I mean honestly, it’s not like the coaches are playing him because they owe him something, it’s because he’s better than the guys behind him, period. If some of the other guys think they’re better than Dimon then step up. It’s simple as that. Last year was last year.

          • Randy says:

Need Marvin Wilson. Also I think think Greg Rogers is a perfect fit for DE in our defense.

          • Jpsooner23 says:

Dimon is this years Sanchez, everyone will have something to say when he does anything wrong.

          • KJ1123 says:

Makes sense. The problem is (imo) OU needs more space eaters and less tweeners.

          • Jpsooner23 says:

Oh I completely agree, but I’m just tired of all these people dogging on the kid. We gotta cruit better if we don’t want to be whiny about athletic talent, size, etc.

      • Michael Hardy says:

It he is the best candidate to start then I am concerned. But as you say it’s a new season and things change. He could have been injured at the time I noticed him being pushed around.

Generally, speaking our entire DL was being bullied by the Clemson OL. We need to be a lot better across the entire DL.

    • Maverick says:

Texas is so mediocre historically and they refuse to acknowledge it. I think it’s called delusions of grandeur.

  • Christian Taylor says:

I may have missed this somewhere but are we still expecting that walk-on receiver Reggie turner?

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

If it’s accurate that Wilson, Manning and others are waiting to see Texas’ improvement, I am disappointed. It’s not that I think the longhorns will improve greatly, but that OU sits here with a record of success and titles since 2000. OU is a fine academic institution and plays in very high profile games. There is stability in the staff, albeit not at DL coach and OU is ranked 3-6 in every preseason poll. OU to this point has a top 5 class. OU has placed more pros than Texas in the few years as well. What is the allure at Texas when compared to OU? Head shaking.

    • SoonerFan92 says:

I think the big problem is that most of these kids are from the state of Texas and have a lot of outside influence for them to go there. But that might be the only good reason.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

And, they probably grew up wanting to play for Texsa, like Oklahoma kids want to pay for OU.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

And, they probably grew up wanting to play for Texsa, like Oklahoma kids want to pay for OU.

    • Jordan says:

I am from Texas and played HS football year within the last 5 years. In Texas, pretty much regardless of how well Texas is playing, when they recruit you, it is a huge deal. I played with and against kids who went to Texas to play football and it is a hugely prestigious thing.
In Texas, if UT football is at your practice or comes to your school to talk to you, that is a big, big deal. Don’t get me wrong; if OU or A&M or LSU come, that is a big deal as well. But with UT, it is just different. It is really hard to explain without experiencing it first-hand.
I can tell you I grew up not hating UT or loving them, but they came to one of my practices to watch me and a few other kids (mostly them) and it felt like the biggest honor possible.

      • Boom says:

Cool and I’m sure it’s like this with a lot of in state schools. If OU were to go to a HS in Oklahoma, it would prolly be the same. As much as this is true, I hope we can persuade them to come to OU. I live in Houston area so I’m familiar with how kids talk and what they say. Interesting, the younger you go, the more they don’t care as much about UT as it once was or at least that is what they are saying now.

        • Jordan says:

I think that is absolutely true with Oklahoma kids and OU, Louisiana kids and LSU, etc.
I agree with you on that as well. With realignment, other teams getting decent, and kids wanted to go to a school with more “flash” or the coolest uniforms, I think that has changed kids minds. That being said, there are still kids that want to go to an in-state school because they grew up dreaming of playing for that school (Draper, Humphrey, Broiles, etc with OU; potentially Wilson, Manning, etc. with UT).

          • Boom says:

no doubt. I want UT to get better for a better conf look but it may not matter much moving forward. Big 12 may disband, who knows but if it does, OU needs UT and UT needs OU as it’s one of if not the best Rivalries in college sports. I think the best rivalry.

    • Hornsup says:

Well you just have to be disappoint because they are all watching and waiting. Texas has just as many NC titles as OU since 2000. Texas is a better academic institution sorry. Texas plays Notre Dame and USC is up next. Funny how I look on Twitter and OU fans talk about how bad the state of Texas is. But man do they hope for those athletes from Texas. Texas kids will more often than not look to see how UT is doing because it’s the school of the state. And the last two classes are intriguing to those kids. They will wait and many like Wilson are looking for a reason to commit. Sorry.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Equal in titles, but we’ve been the dominant team in the conference so there’s that as well.

    • DCinAZ says:

They grew up Texas fans. Pretty simple.

    • Smitherines says:

If recall correctly, Adrian Peterson did something similar. He chose OU over Texas because we had beat them a few years in a row.

      • officially known as number 2 says:

He went to OU, because they win championships. He played in one, and the next year he watched maybe the greatest one ever played by texsa and USC, but LenDale White converted that 4th and 1 and the rest we shall say is history.

  • ALar03 says:

Went to a Houston board just to see how their fall camp was goin, which they lost 2 DEs to knee injuries think backups, but dear GOD my head hurts now… They are almost as bad as Texsa fans just without the long lost tradition…
