Open Post | Holiday Weekend, Sept. 4th – 7th (UPDATE Sun., 12:55 pm)

Southlake Carroll vs. Union: Several of the Oklahoma coaches will be in attendance for tonight’s big game at Tulsa Union where they will host Southlake Carroll. In fact, I have been told Bob Stoops is even expected to be there. OU targets playing in the game include:

Tre Brown – The 2017 OK Preps corner recently visited OU, during which the coaches told him they will be watching his first 2-3 games and then deciding on whether to make an offer.

Obi Eboh – As I mentioned earlier in the week, we have heard that Eboh may announce his decision tonight following the game. If that does happen, we will update you as soon as we hear something.

Robert Barnes – As most of you know, Robert Barnes is a 2017 safety and the son of former Sooners LB/DE Reggie Barnes. I checked in with Reggie earlier this week to see if a commitment may happen for his son this Friday as well and was told there is nothing like that planned. Right now OU is in a good spot with Barnes, and I certainly wouldn’t discount the possibility of a decision coming sometime this season. – (Super K)

Du’Vonta Lampkin: As most of you know by now, Lampkin’s NLI has been voided and he is now cleared to play. Just to clarify things for everyone, the NLI essentially states that if a player does not qualify for the institution with which he/she signed the NLI, and so long as all academic credentials have been submitted by Sept. 1st, then the NLI shall be voided.

What delayed things for around a week was Texas’ attempt to make an argument under that same clause that was, to be honest, nonsensical in that they attempted to impute a meaning to the clause that no rational person would read into it.

Once the NCAA reviewed everything and ensured all academic credentials had been submitted, the matter was promptly taken care of and the NLI became void

As far a redshirt, only time will tell but I have been told that Lampkin’s late arrival in no way guarantees a redshirt as many had assumed. – (Super K)

Team Note | True Freshman Corner Into The Fire: As I mentioned earlier in the week, I had heard that true freshman PJ Mbanasor had been taking a lot of first team reps at corner throughout the week. I checked with a couple sources and it appears that Mbanasor is expected to get the start on Saturday night.

I cannot get into the specifics of what led to Mbanasor getting the start over Jordan Thomas, but I can say Thomas is expected to play on Saturday as well. And while it will continue to be a competition, as is virtually every starting position throughout the season, the expectation is that Thomas will resume his starting role the following week in Knoxville. – (Super K)

  • BoomSoon says:

Very likely he will not be the only true freshman starting.

  • Zack says:

I’m curious why the decision to start mbanasor week 1 and then go back to Thomas week 2? I get that they want mbanasor to get some serious action but that seems like a weird plan IMO.

  • Jofield says:

I think Akron is a fantastic time to start PJ anyway. He should have a long, productive career in Norman.

  • BoomerDave says:

Super K, please explain about Mbanasor/Thomas, because on its face, it makes no sense. What you said is you expect Mbanasor to start against Akron and Thomas to start against Tennessee. Is Thomss hurt? Serving a suspension? How can one expect a backup (Thomas) to start game 2 when game 1 hasn’t been played yet? Am I missing something?

  • Jofield says:

Just to keep it alive… If we take Chris Daniels would we still take Caleb Kelly????

    • Jordan Esco says:

Yes. DL & LB, respectively, so one is not really related to the other aside from a strictly numbers perspective. But both are definite takes for OU, for sure.

    • Zack says:

But would kelly still come here if we took Daniels???? We already have 2 receivers!!!

  • Jonathan Taylor says:

Outside of QB does it really matter who starts? Sounds like a lot of rotation in the future for nearly every position.

    • Jofield says:

Oh you mean we are going to develop depth and not implode every time there is an injury? That sounds good!!

  • Indy_sooner says:

Hell yeah!! Bring the wood Mbanasorous Rex

  • BoomerDave says:

Off topic, but I’m really impressed with the job Anthony Fogle does at The Franchise. He is extremely knowledgeable, insightful, and articulate. He is quickly becoming one of my favorite on-air personalities in the OKC market. In fact, my 4 favorite sports talk guys are all ex-OU players, all doing great jobs. Dusty, Teddy, Kelly Gregg and Anthony.

    • Kelly Gurbcock says:

why are you going so far off topic? I like Kelly, he loves beer and football so we relate well. Dusty is awesome and I want him to make Traber have an aneurysm.

      • BoomerDave says:

He and Mark make Traber cry like a little baby practically every day. I only listen to Traber for his first hour just to hear Traber whine about Dusty and Mark beating up on him.

    • rainydaze114 says:

Plot twist: BoomerDave is actually Anthony Fogle.

    • Zack says:

I like Gregg and fogel both tell you things you would never know about the culture of the game. Dusty would be better if he wasn’t on an E network talk show.

    • rphokc says:

the latter 4, where and when are they on air……..thxs

      • Zack says:

I think you were asking for the times? I don’t know about teddy exactly he’s on kref I think sometime after 2:00.
Kelly Gregg is currently like 6-9 in the morning on 107.7
        Dusty 12-3 98.1
        Fogel is 12-2or3 on 107.7

        • rphokc says:

zack, thxs much……….I’m just in the habit of listening to wwls that I don’t know who is out there…………wwls gets aggravating……couple of days ago, they got to talking about food then added tramel and talked more food for nearly an hr!

        • BoomerDave says:

And Teddy is on from 2-6 on KREF.

  • Garrett says:

I’m getting the feeling that OU is going all out this year. Playing the best players despite being freshman and getting the new guys lots of reps in prep for the rest of the season. I feel like this year is much more strategic and they are truly wanting to shock the world.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

PJ was always going to start at some point this year, I’m excited about his potential but a tFR worries me in coverage, unless OU is going back to man to man package

  • Birddawg says:

I love it. PJ getting the starting nod.
    Competition is brewing in norman.

Need to get PJ/Kahlil to step up. You can never have too many guys that can cover.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Rumors that Samia has gotten a lot of 1st team reps this week & may start at right tackle over St. John.. Any tfb confirmation on that front..?

    • Jordan Esco says:

They’re gonna go w/ two freshmen at tackle? Wow, I’d be surprised. But they’re obviously big fans of Samia. Will try and see if there is anything to this.

      • BoomSoon says:

There is. Not saying he is going to start, but it is becoming likely. He was with 1s all day yesterday and has outplayed St John. Don’t be surprised. My source said “Right now, tackles are Orlando and Drew”. Take that however you will.

        • Jordan Esco says:

          Interesting. Appreciate you sharing!

        • soonersd says:

Thanks for the info. Any chance they are doing the same thing with Samia as they are with PJ and giving them the first team reps just to create depth? I think it’s a great idea to give True Frosh 1st team reps game week against a cupcake to get the jitters out before going to Tenn. Especially in a scenario where you expect to use those freshman in a rotation.

          • Cush Creekmont says:

Your notion makes good practical sense. The “start” against an outclassed opponent is less risky than a later game start after an injury. The two upperclassmen could start at Tenn with all egos stroked and keeping them all fresh by rotating in the hurry up.

        • hemisooner says:

Have a bad feeling this OL is going to be the weakness of the team. Starting two Freshman(one a redshirt) is never a good thing

          • Jed says:

While I’d ordinarily agree, if they are the best we have at those positions, then we go with them. No matter the experience. Maybe we’ve been outthinking ourselves the past few years and need to just simplify things, line up and play.
You could draw up a theory that that is what Stoops did with his coaching personnel changes…and that it represents a return to an earlier stage in his career.
Not sure whether I buy my own theory, but the idea crossed my mind.

          • hemisooner says:

I agree the best player should play regardless of class but it’s never good starting two freshman no matter what talent they have. You can get away with it at certain positions but not Oline.

          • Jed says:

Looked at in the inverse: if these two freshmen beat out the upper classmen, then the upperclassmen, for all their superior experience, were just not as good as the new guys. That may not be good news, but I expect Coach B will put the best tools he’s got on the field.

          • Nate Broadus says:

It depends on how good they really are. If they’re genuinely ready, mature, physically and mentally and are that much better than the guys in front of them, I would say it’s premature to say it’s “never good.”

Their play in a live game will determine if it was a good move or a bad one.

    • John Garner says:

Unreal if true, but if two FR start at tackle they must be awesome as I would never question Coach B’s choices. Just kind of spooky. Especially with Tennessee looming.

  • Jordan or K, two questions:
    1) have we heard anything else about moving Nila to left guard to help out Brown and moving alvarez out to be helped by St. John? It just makes little to no sense to have two very green guys on the left side when you can have an upper-classman beside both the youngsters.
    2) Any more discussion on the splits of the o-line? Watching TCU last night, they run a very, VERY similar scheme as what will be run with Riley. And that’s not surprising because their coach is an Air Raid guy. But I don’t know how wide the splits are on the o-line at TCU. What we had heard earlier on is that the line is going to be split wider than last year, but not as wide as a Mike Leach Texas Tech offense.
    3) Boomer F’in Sooner guys!!!!! Football is back and I’m getting married this month! Life is friggin good!!!!!

  • Jordan Esco says:

    update added

  • John Garner says:

Is it noteworthy that Chris Daniel’s is the one holding the OU poster? Sure hope so.

    • Jofield says:

We’ll call it a soft commit

On the flip side its also the smallest poster so…..

    • EasTex says:

  • Jason Vos says:

Iron sharpens iron. I hope Mbanasor and Jordan Thomas keep competing all season.

No coincidence that Jordan EVans game has all of a sudden gone up a lot more knowing he is competing with Frank Shannon

  • Jason Vos says:

I’m intrigued by AD Miller true freshman that they say has down the field type speed. Came in and is now 2nd team. He must really be good

    • BoomSoon says:

He and Dahu are both big time threats on the outside. Both have good combo speed and size. Will play a lot.

    • Fear The Magic says:

I am as well. I think that AD and Mead are the 2 young WRs that really will do some damage.

      • Sam Sherwood says:

You know Baker won’t be able to stop himself from throwing long and high floaters to these tall, fly-catching WR’s. I like it.

        • paganpink says:

That’s a sure bet. Bakers got a strong arm and people willing to get it when he throws it. Should make for a great Saturday for him. And if it’s great for him- it’s great for us!

  • j l says:

Said PJ would start a game by texas, glad to see the coaches prove me right =)

    • paganpink says:

Boy, he must be catching on fast! Good call.

    • BoomerDave says:

If we read between the lines, he is starting by default. Thomas is the real starter but is sitting out the first quarter or so as some type of disciplinary action.

      • j l says:

A starts a start lol. Theres several other CB’s with more experience, so for a true frosh to get the start, regardless of why, shows the kid has got some skills.

        • Brent says:

I can’t believe I’m now even more excited about our season opener. OU could play 3 freshmen in the trenches. I’m getting giddy.

  • j l says:

    Holyfield committed to georgia.

Puts us in even better shape with whaley?

  • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Mbanasor starting at CB as a true freshman puts him in some pretty elite company, like Aaron Colvin for example.

  • Jesse says:

Bond the most pro ready defender?? I’m not complaining just kind of shocks me

    • Mr. Jones says:

Question is, is that an indictment of our defense or a testimony to his talent?

      • Jesse says:

His talent. I guess when I thought of the defense I thought of the more premier names. Striker. Sanchez. Parker. I’m definitely excited to watch bond play.

  • Drew says:

I have to say, like that Daniels included his friends in his announcement. Seems like a good kid.

  • Fear The Magic says:

Take it for what its worth but just saw this on another board:

Heard from a very reliable source that Samia has passed St John at RT and it is a very real possibility he will start against Akron. He’s been running with the 1s a lot this week.

Was told the tackles will be a work in progress but the talent is there and the interior will be fine (Alvarez is a player with a nasty streak).

DeDe is a taller version of Jalen and every bit as good as Shepard (more explosive, not quite the technician). AD and Dahu will play a lot and Mead just catches everything. Andrews is a beast, especially in the RZ.

He said its pretty amazing that at the end of last year, it could have been argued that Quick was the best WR on the team outside of Shep. Now the guy can’t crack the top 7 at the position.

Mixon has been phenomenal. If it weren’t for a committee, both he and Samaje have Heisman type ability but the split workload won’t allow that kind of consideration this year. I asked my source if that was just hyperbole and he said “Absolutely not!”

Was told D is improved. Line is solid with good pash rush ability. LBs have been solid. Secondary is more experienced but still is weak spot of D. Individuals back there are all capable but comm breakdowns is biggest potential problem.

    • hemisooner says:

We have a lot of playmakers this year on offense just depends if the Oline can protect and run block. I think the front seven on defense is pretty good, especially at rushing the passer.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

      Reggie Bush and LenDale White

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

Playing Captain Obvious here, but it seems all we need is a QB who can read defenses and distribute the ball to the play makers to make it all happen. If we can shape the O into a great unit it will take tons of pressure off the D. I think we need that this year to give time for secondary unit to develop.

  • EasTex says:

Coach’s Corner is on Fox Sports Central right now until 3p.m.

  • BobBarker69 says:

Stoops’ choice to simplify the schemes probably has a lot to do with all the freshman in the two deep. Learning the scheme was usually the biggest hurdle to true freshman even more so than the physical part.

Also, as for the two freshman tackles, being quick/having good feet is probably more important than mauling people in this offense. That may be a contributing factor.

  • Brien Brown says:

Don’t shoot me but, after all the talk I have heard all day about how bad baby brother looked and how bad TCU looked, let’s cut a little slack, first game of the year, there will be some jitters, things take some time to click mean even though you practice that’s practice nothing beats in game situations! Does anyone remember how rough we looked against Utah State a few years back. Just cut a little slack people! Anyway, I am excited like many of you to see what we do tomorrow and how we look I would guess we may see 3 FR in the def secondary at one point tomorrow, I think Sunderland, Mbanasor, and Haughton, and perhaps McKinney may all play tomorrow night. Mark my words though this is my fearless prediction on the D side, Steven Parker will be an All American and be our X Factor. On the O side, with everything we have heard about the obvious, Perine, Mixon, Shepard, and Westbrook. I fully expect Flowers to be a X-Factor but, my sleeper All American is Andrews after watching his highlights and seeing the kid make moves and this spread Offense he could really shine! Our FR kicker could be a whole lot like Hartley was for us just more accurate! Time will tell. BOOMER!!!

    • thebigdroot says:

The pokes are going to miss Wickline more than they are willing to admit.

    • Brent says:

TCU played worse against OU last year than last night and still beat us.

      • SoonerMGB56 says:

Pardon my disagreement, but I think that’s a crock.

        • Brent says:

I remember TCU with a few turnovers and about 15 penalties in the game last year, but I could be wrong

          • Jofield says:

Measuring “how a team played” using two metrics is always dangerous. You should also keep in mind the quality of opponent when making those assessments.

      • Jofield says:

Uh, care to back that up with… anything? Comparing Minnesota to OU is a stretch. We were a few plays away from being 10-2 and Minnesota is… Minnesota.

      • Brien Brown says:

What year you talking maybe Peterson’s Sophomore season. They did not play bad against us at all. Go put your head in shame! Can’t be an OU fan have to be trolling!!!

        • Brent says:

3 turnovers and 12 penalties against OU last year.

          • Jofield says:

Yeah but by your logic a team that had 3 turnovers vs Alabama and 2 turnovers against Akron — would have had a better game against Akron. There is more to it than that!

          • Brent says:

I’m not trying to start anything or “troll”, but TCU did not play a fundamentally solid game against us last year and still was victorious. That is a fact.

          • Brien Brown says:

Nor did OU!!! That is also a FACT!!!

          • SamSooner says:

How fundamentally sound was OU? You make it sound like OU played solid and lost to TCU, who were not fundamentally sound.

No, OU was not at its best in that game.

          • Brien Brown says:

            RIGHT!!!!

          • Brent says:

Sorry, my message is getting lost here. Again, my original point was that TCU played worse against OU last year than they played last night and still came out with a W. I’m not saying anything controversial here.

          • Brien Brown says:

Again different year different teams. Boykin did not play that bad against OU last year as bad he played last night, that is all I am saying!!! Plus maybe you discredit Minn too much!!

          • Brien Brown says:

That or over credit how good OU was last year!

          • Brent says:

He threw a pass that hit the back of his own field goal post.

          • Brien Brown says:

At least it wasn’t picked off!

          • Brent says:

that was funny. better to be lucky than good in that situation

          • Brien Brown says:

Hell I would of been happy had Knight hit more goal post last year!!! Just saying!

          • SamSooner says:

We just want you to acknowledge that OU played as poorly as TCU did. When I read what you’re saying it sounds like OU played perfectly but still managed to lose to TCU, who played poorly. That seems to indicate that TCU was hands down better than OU. That’s not what I saw when I watched the game.

          • Brien Brown says:

            Agreed!!!

          • Brent says:

I just reread all my posts and not once did I mention OU’s play.

          • SamSooner says:

            Exactly.

You only mentioned TCU’s poor play and how they still won.

          • Brent says:

OK. Or as some here would say OK!!!!!!

          • soonerthunder says:

          • boomersooner says:

tcu might have played “bad” but we handed em that game. period. end of discussion. no way we got outplayed. no way they were better. we easily made as many mistakes as they did. 2 3rd or 4th and shorts late come to mind

          • Brent says:

never said that. the board just went and ran with that idea.

          • SamSooner says:

That’s the problem when you don’t put out all the facts.

          • Brent says:

State ALL the facts? Such a silly statement. I stated one fact.

          • boomersooner says:

i reread my post and nowhere are the words “brent said tcu played awful, we played awesome and tcu still beat us. all hail tcu”. but yes you could have put in the fact that we stunk just as bad if not worse. you could have agreed with these guys a long time ago and saved yourself some grief and time, but its your life

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

Again, I disagree. Yes they had three turnovers and twelve penalties v OU last year. But that doesn’t tell the whole story.
Last night, Boykin routinely missed wide open receivers, and their D couldn’t consistently shut down a one dimensional Minnesota team.
Vs. OU last year, they had the turnovers and penalties, but that was before our D had totally lost confidence. We were covering tight and pressuring them. They were in third and long frequently, and Boykin routinely escaped the pressure and was incredibly accurate on medium and deep throws, dropping them in over tight coverage. Or he escaped and scrambled for first downs. And on our worst days, our defense was as good as Minnesota’s.
I watched the whole game last night. There was none of that Boykin last night. Boykin last night was a shell of the Boykin we saw last year. And for that matter, so was their defense.

          • Brien Brown says:

We was #4 in the country in that game but, we where so far from being a #4 team!!!

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Knight couldn’t hit anything in the second half of that game.

          • Brien Brown says:

Ok!!!! But, what did we do against them also take that in consideration and they barely beat us. With no real O to speak of, a bad secondary and we had TO’s also. Different years different teams, plus Minn has one of the best D secondary’s in the Big 10 go check it!!! C’mon Man!!

          • soonerthunder says:

OU had 2 TOs and tcu had 17 yds more in penalties than OU.

      • soonerthunder says:

so minn would have beaten us is what you are saying. don’t think so

Not intending to insult anyone as I think everyone is free to make their own choices but I find it very sad that gambling gets air time on sports talk. Traber claims to be such a good christian man but doesn’t have a problem pushing gambling in a state in which it is illegal.

    • rphokc says:

to me it’s just incredibly boring…..

    • Brien Brown says:

Don’t you know nothing is Illegal until you get caught…DUH!!! LOL, and that is the least of my concern though, now who too bet on tomorrow?!?!?!?!?!?

    • Jed says:

Not trying to stir anything up, but why is it sad?
Is it the ‘vice’ aspect? Or that a relatively small percentage of gamblers end up wagering amounts they can not afford to lose? Or that some commercial interest is receiving ‘free’ airtime?
Some of the oldest archaeological finds on earth are gambling pieces (ancient ‘dice’ for want of a better term). It seems that after supplying for their immediate needs, our forefathers turned briskly to gambling as an entertainment. Something so deeply entrenched in our psyches is not likely to go away. And, if we’re going to have it, it might as well be legal and regulated.
IMHO what’s really sad is … well …Traber..

      • Oscar says:

Because ONLY the government is allowed to be in the business of gambling (lottos, etc) because only government is moral enough to “govern” the process. 🙂

        • Malicong says:

          Or the Native Americans.

          • Jed says:

I find the fact that Indian tribes are selling watered whisky and rigged games of chance to white people to be enormously amusing.
On a serious note, Indian gaming is simply derivative of their status of being subordinate to the Federal Government but not to those of the States. That is because ‘we’ refused to come out and admit that we’d simply stolen their land and wanted to tart the process up as ‘Treaties’. If this is not acceptable, I suppose most tribes would be okay with going back to the status quo ante. I think I could probably sell the Cherokees on shutting down their casino’s in exchange for return, in fee simple estate, outside the control of the USA, of Eastern Tennessee, Northern Georgia and the Western halves of the Carolinas. In honor of certain historical events, those presently resident in such areas could have six months to pack up and go.

        • Jed says:

I get your point. nanny state and all that. But at some point, we have to accept that the government is us. We elect the folks who run it, we can unelect them.
There are decisions we have to make in common (lke speed limits) and we’ve set up procedures for doing so. That’s all the state’s involvement in gambling is. Want to be bored? Go attend city council kinds of meetings. If you’re willing to study up and be prepared, you can ‘have a say’ in the decisions. The fact that your, or my, opinion doesn’t always win out does not in the least indict the system itself.

      • Malicong says:

LOL. Agree on the Traber part. I don’t have a problem with people gambling at all. I gamble from time to time. I have been to Vegas a couple of times and would love to go back.
I just find it sad that the sports animal gives it a prime spot. It is terrible radio and most of us don’t care about what the Fat Jack thinks.

        • Jed says:

Ah! I’ve never heard that portion. Lots of people do enjoy discussing the ‘odds’ on games, though.

    • DCinAZ says:

Personally, I never understood the problem people have with gambling. I certainly understand it from the faith point of view but I personally don’t care what people do with their money and find gambling to be a legitimate enterprise.

    • thebigdroot says:

Who are you or I to tell somebody how they should live. I’m tired of people pushing their beliefs on me, making laws that just make it difficult. Like most things, if it can be abused someone will abuse it. Moderation is more the norm than some people want to admit. And while I’m on my soap box: I’m sick to death of terroristic anti smoking commercials. You can put the truth out there without using fear to get people to do what you want. Rant over. 🙂

      • Jed says:

That Yul Brenner ad DID scare the crap outta me, though.
“If you’re watching this ad, it’s because I’m dead. Because I smoked.” Got my attention.

        • thebigdroot says:

I understand what they are trying to do but using fear is not the road to go down. I am a grown man, no I’m not 40 (yet), and I know right from wrong. Just my 2 cents.

          • Jed says:

            And I’m good with that.
The boxing out of smoking from public areas is enough, in my book, but I’m not too annoyed by the ads. You are free to be, however, without injuring my tranquility in the least.
The scary pictures of diseased lungs on the ones in Europe are a bit gross, but, hey, … Europe.

          • thebigdroot says:

It annoys me, yes. My wife’s reaction to me:

“Behind every great man is a woman, rolling her eyes”

      • boomersooner says:

most Christians don’t try to overstep bounds, but it is our duty to try to reach people. most, if told to cease, will do just that. you are free to do whatever you want and most Christians are not good examples at most things, but some, like my granddaddy, once God gets ahold of you are awesome Christian role models(he quit drinking and smoking cold turkey, for 2 examples). moderation of sinful acts does not make them any less sinful.

not trying to argue or anything. just trying to point out that true Christians will pursue you, but not to make you feel pathetic about yourself

and, in canada, their cigarette packs are nasty with pictures of organs and whatnot that have abused cigarettes. but yeah, those commercials with monsters or whatever as cigarettes is nasty also

        • thebigdroot says:

But it’s not the act that is sinful. People generalize way too often. Yes I grew up in a Southern Baptist home so I am familiar. Religions are basically the same. They guide you on the path to being a good person. You have all the right in the world to feel the way you do and I fully support your right to do so. It’s all good, I got my rant out. 🙂

          • boomersooner says:

hahaha. you’re good. i’m glad you feel better. i’m southern baptist as well. just live in freaking mormon land now. the only thing being a good person does is to be a window to God leading your life. to be an example of what Jesus would be like were he still physically here. you are correct in that having a drink every so often is not bad, its the act of getting drunk that is. but this is a conversation for another board

          • thebigdroot says:

Yeah there is two things your guaranteed to start an argument discussing: religion and politics. I usually avoid these discussions but my soap box had some dust on it.

          • boomersooner says:

you’re good. some get offended by it so i try to keep it short(these weren’t), but i don’t get offended. i’ve been called everything in the book at least twice

          • SamSooner says:

No you haven’t. You haven’t been called SamSooner. LOL!

          • boomersooner says:

that’s a good point. i have not been called that

          • SamSooner says:

Just kidding with you, my friend. You have a good evening. I’m sure we will connect tomorrow.

How’s your son and wife doing?

          • boomersooner says:

they’re good. thank you. wife got released but has stayed the night for a few in a row since our son has to stay, so she can feed him. he’s done with blood sugar tests. has been for a few days but still needs antibiotics for his infection. his tests have come back real good. they just want him to stay and give him one more shot monday night and then he’ll be home as soon as the last drip enters his body

          • SamSooner says:

Good to know. I’m very happy for you and your wife. Lot’s of good times coming your way, not to mention, another Sooner fan.

I had a wonderful weekend shooting jungle pigs in Indonesia about 20 years ago with a Muslim client. Eating ribs washed down with excellent Bintang beer, I smiled at him. To which he replied, “Wild boar, not pig. And, before you ask, I’m drinking beer, I’m not getting drunk.” it’s a more relaxed Islam in Eastern Java.

          • boomersooner says:

boar huh? was it good? seems like it would be a tad gamey

        • Jed says:

Boomer, just curious, but in what way are alcohol or tobacco ‘sinful’? Catholics include alcohol at the core of observance and, even taking doctrinal differences into account, it’d be hard to label them out of the larger house of ‘Christianity’.
Some sects believe that caffeine falls into the same category. Or that consumption of some kinds of food at some proscribed calendar periods is forbidden. Heck, some sects demand that you follow rules regarding trimming of one’s body hair or selection of hats, belts and outer wear.
It’s awfully hard to arrive at a set of universally agreeable principles regarding what’s right and wrong. As to personal conduct, I think the outreach/prostletizing would be best served by living an example. But I understand that to some the Biblical injunction just doesn’t seem to have rational limits. And I try to accept those approaches in precisely the spirit in which they are offered.

          • boomersooner says:

religion has been the cause of many a war because stupid humans get a little big for their britches and want their way to be the one chosen. you’d probably have to go back to the tower of Babel to see where everything went haywire. the ol’ what would Jesus do bracelets were about the best idea of how to go about life. what if Jesus were to walk in the room right at that second? would you wanna be serial fornicating or getting hammered or whatnot? God gave us His Son to get us to Heaven AND to show us how to get there. we screwed it up a long time ago with religion. that’s one of the reasons He said there’s only one way to get to Heaven. so, yes. you are correct. you could lead several to Christ and go home and be the biggest hypocrite known to man. and there are many many many who give Christians a bad name. i’m one with the way i act around here sometimes

          • Jed says:

The serial fornicating might be a bit embarrassing (though, with the ‘be fruitful and multiply’ thing and all the begetting and crazy numbers of wives, etc, who knows?) , but I’m betting that Jesus would have had less to no issue with getting hammered. He was, after all, a well known vintner himself.
Human beings are, in our very genetic code, selfish. That we have brains allows us to avoid acting out on our more primal compulsions. Whatever helps us to behave more considerately towards our fellows should be valued.

          • thebigdroot says:

          • Jed says:

And therein may lie the rub: I’ve done my reading and arrived at conclusions that apparently diverge from yours. Are you willing to allow me to live according to mine while you live according to yours?

Anyone in Dallas Fort Worth area know of any cable companies carrying the game of PPV? I’m not finding any in my search. I have Verizon and they never offer OU games on PPV. Frustrating. I may have to stream it using SoonerVision. Anyone purchased a game like this? I the quality good for $54?

    • thebigdroot says:

I know some had issues with their connection last year. On Dish it is only $39.99, and I finally convinced my wife to let me get it, not rubbing it in. 🙂

What channel did you order on Dish? I got 458 and they told me HD not available in my area (western OK). But gamefinder says 469 has game in HD. I think I got screwed.

According to my guide channel, 458 is SD and 469 is HD. I’m in the OKC metro.

          • Slim Sooner says:

Thanks for the reply. That’s what mine says, too. When I called they said I could only get 458 out here. Sounds screwy though.

          • Bart Young says:

It does sound screwy; I ordered through my remote on 469. I’m going to unhappy if it is SD only. Guess we will see what happens.

    • EasTex says:

I’m in Dallas and have Time-Warner. I went to their website and chatted online, they have the game for 39.95, but they hadn’t updated their info as of Wednesday so I don’t know if it will be HD or not. You might try calling or going online with Verizon.
The ppv last year was horrible, but it was Fox Sports fault. I’ll be listening on the radio this year and wait for the replay Monday night at midnight.

Brussel sprouts are worse than thieves but not worse than child molseters. They are the worst of all. So, then our revised list is: Child molesters, Baylor, Brussel sprouts, thieves.

    • Sooner Ray says:

They fall right between child molesters and thieves on my list.

hey zack, do you think anyone has near the 2nd string on O and D as OU in the b12? I’m intersted in depth, b/c I don’t know the other teams like you do and injuries happen. It appears to me that OU c/provide a very competitive fellow at possibly every position. even at OL, where I think we are the weakest, it may n/b/all that great of a difference between brown/st john/samia/farniok and probably same w/danley at G. about anywhere else it looks to me like we c/absorb an injury better than we did last yr. last yr we lost shep, destroyed passing. this yr, don’t think so. or perine, I think we might be okay. even QB. probably all db spots, lb, and dl. Do you agree?

what people need to remember is that all other teams have to worry about getting certain guys hurt too, and it might create a weakness. i’m feeling good about ou this yr b/c it appears no single injury would hurt us terribly like last yr at several positions (Sanchez, striker, shep, tk, perine–last yr).

      • Zack says:

I’m not sure that we can afford many injuries but I do think our depth is better than it has been. We just need the attitude back we definitely have the talent

        • Rick says:

I agree, I read somewhere a day or two ago how many fresh/soph we are playing this year. When you are starting fresh/soph players, your backups are the jrs/srs, you cant help having depth to some degree.

        • soonerthunder says:

yes, but do you think our 2nd 22 are better than anyone else’s 2nd 22? what you think?

    • Mathew says:

I DESPISE Baylor because they’ve been the punching bag of the NCAA for their entire history, yet now that they’ve had a “few solid yr’s”, they want to “pretend” like their program stacks up to elite ones like OUr’s to recruits. They really haven’t done S%#t, to this day! Good offense, flashy lil uniforms, TERRIBLE defense, and a snake charmer of a coach. Hopefully this yr is ABOUT stomping a mudhole in these lil poser’s asses and showing everybody who the elite school REALLY is in this conference….enough’s enough already. Seriously. They’ve had their lil 15 minutes…now get back in your damn place….where you BELONG! It should be THE MISSION of our team.

    • holieway4ou says:

I don’t know how much you hate them, but I really hate ’em. What’s bad is that my wife’s best friend is Baptist and sent both of her children to Baylor and she thinks they’re God’s gift to football. She buries her head in the sand and doesn’t seem to notice the raping, killin’ and dirty playin’ that Briles and Bliss seem to encourage.

    • Boom says:

I do Zack. Every time I see Briles, I think of everything the game shouldn’t be. Briles is patterning his game after Jimmy Johnson during the Miami days. Paying grad assistants to jump around with the kids, pathetic. I see cheap shots, major mouthing just like Miami. Interesting, at the beginning of the game, SMU was hitting the WRs hard and they didn’t like that. I hope OU doesn’t worry about a single interception and just goes for the kill shots on the posts. Byrd/Thomas laying some serious wood as soon as they catch it. They won’t mouth after the 1st Q.
What I don’t get is, the refs just let it go. Cannon was mouthing a kid in his grill after a catch and they didn’t call anything. I think they put a rule in for taunting but I don’t think it applies to BU.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

TERRIBLE time management by SMU QB. Should have gotten a FG out of that last drive. But the ‘Stangs are hanging tough.

    • soonerthunder says:

smu has outplayed bu. that was stupid. terrible. junior high play. i hope this is an indication of what bu’s d looks like though. bu lucky on another smu possession too, when a guy went out bounds. not a good play by bu but bad play from smu. I look bu to make adjustments and knock smu out 2nd half, but i’m still glad they had pressure on them like this nationally 1st half

      • Walter Sobcek says:

Yeah, it may knock them down a notch, at least as far as their ego. Hope SMU can keep moving the chains in the 2nd half.

    • Mathew says:

Yeah they missed on two great opportunities. Gotta get the FG there. They’re driving for the lead right now if he throws that ball away before halftime. Hopefully they can tie it up here.

  • BleedCrimson says:

    22 Hours. Remember this?

  • thebigdroot says:

BU’s D is bad. The question is, could Heupel (as an OC) score on it?

    • BleedCrimson says:

Yes, he has in the past. Why wouldn’t he still be able to?

      • thebigdroot says:

        Enough to beat them?

        • OceanDescender says:

He had a moment of clarity against BU in 2012, otherwise no unfortunately.

        • BleedCrimson says:

That would be up to the D. I think we are completely different this year. I do believe that we are going to be pleasantly surprised with the level of play from our young guys this year. I have a good feeling about this D.

          • Mathew says:

I hope our D is better too but if the d-line sits back and catches blocks and plays conservative “2-gap”, it’s going the be the same ole song and dance. I hope our D-line coach is allowed to have his guys play HIS STYLE. Can’t give teams time to pick us apart and we HAVE to be multiple and not just play base-d the whole game. I don’t care how good a secondary is, if the lines not agressive they’ll get exposed back there. The QB’s are just too good now. We have the athletes….USE THEM!

  • Katyboomer says:

I have to mute Mack Brown, his voice is to nasal for me. Am I alone?

  • Katyboomer says:

I like our chances running on Baylor. Our RB are much better then SMU RB. They are playing well, but not on the same level as our guys.

    • thebigdroot says:

I think their RB is a true Freshman.

      • Katyboomer says:

Yeah and look how good they are doing. Makes you wonder how well we will do on them.

        • Sooner Ray says:

I think Baylor, and OStinkU for that matter, went into their games this week thinking they were much better than they actually are. As I say this, I’m hoping and praying we don’t do the same. 🙂

    • Birddawg says:

Seth Russell is not in rhythm with his team.
Get in his face.. He gets happy feet.. Makes mistakes.

    • soonerthunder says:

yeah, and our passing is much better than smu’s too. I’m just wanting us to be tons better on D and stop them from getting big plays ON US! I do think we c/score on them. smu should have had a minimum of 28 after 2 1/2 quarters.

  • BleedCrimson says:

I understand that this is BU’s first game, but I really like what I am seeing. I think that all 3 of the Big XII teams that have played are going to play better as the season goes forward, but I like that we are seeing some dents in the armour.

    • Birddawg says:

      Last year,
      Baylor 45-0 smu
      Tcu 48-14 Sanford
Osu lost to flst 37-31 Still put up 31 pts against a playoff team.

I really like the slow start as well

  • ALar03 says:

Bob and Mike at the Union game..

    • Sooner Ray says:

I’ll see the highlights on the local news but if you’re there, maybe you could post some opinions about the targets we have in the game.

      • ALar03 says:

Wasnt really impressed with Eboh but they didn’t attack him much, which is a given, but missed a handful of tackles and seemed slow to get off blocks. Two players that showed out were Trey Adkins and Zach Farrar! Farrar caught two passes over Tre Brown and burned him another time to set up the game winning touchdown. Adkins ran through tackles all night and showed burst on a 70 yard touchdown.. I know Ou can get about whoever in the country at RB but Adkins deserves a look!

I’m no expert just informing you of my opinion and what I saw! Lol Boomer Sooner though! Time to get ready for tomorrow!!

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Shame about SMU losing their QB. That changed the momentum of the entire game.

  • rphokc says:

been watching tennis………..how is the new bu qb looking

    • Birddawg says:

Okay.. I feel his deep post routes hang.
He doesn’t like to move. Reaction is a little slow. He will become better with more experience.
His poise isn’t as confident as Bryce.

Watching these Qbs struggle makes me excited to watch our QB.
I feel like baker has a chance to rival Boykin as the best qb in big 12.

    • Sooner Ray says:

      He’s no Roger Staubach. 🙂

  • Birddawg says:

I don’t think I have seen a LT (spencer drango) pull inside a trap a defensive back. That was a good call.

Baylor will ride on spencer drango in the running game.

  • BleedCrimson says:

For those considering the bOUston Boomah Soonah T’s. I purchased a XXL, which is normally just a bit on the large size. But I find the XL’s normally a bit snug depending on the manufacturer. The XXL was a great fit and looks great and is quite comfortable. I like the fact that the profits goes toward an OU scholy.

    • Sooner Ray says:

You need a female model for better perspective. 🙂

      • BleedCrimson says:

I agree. I do not have the right proportions to do this shirt justice. Where is the person that first brought this shirt to our attention?

        • EasTex says:

That would be one Mrs. J.J. She is in *shudder* South Bend *shudder*.

          • BleedCrimson says:

Definitely with the enemies. Not sure which team I dislike more. Gives an internal shake and thinks, if everyone were Sooners, the world would be so much more amiable. 🙂

          • EasTex says:

There has never been any doubt for me which one I hate…HATE…the most and she is in their lair. I HATED them before I even knew about Texsa.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

I’m still waiting on a New Jersey version for my brethren. But it needs to to read: Boomuh $#%@%^ Soonuh.

  • Mathew says:

The funny thing is, people who didnt watch this game are going to see the score and think they’re soooo good. Makes me want to puke!

  • Mathew says:

I think it’s a fair assessment to say that our 3 biggest threats don’t look as scary as advertised through game 1. All 3 look VERY beatable right now. We gotta see how we look though. Hopefully we’re better than advertised.

  • Katyboomer says:

Hate the blue turf. Wish they would make them change it

  • Mathew says:

I’ll like our chances too, but even if they are indeed a good team, they can’t have games where they come out flat and disinterested like they have the last several yr’s. That’s the thing about that 2000 team, they showed up ready to play every week no matter how bad the other team was. That group really loved the grind and looked forward to it.

  • boomersooner says:

how bout a fun with captions contest with tejas kicker…

  • EasTex says:

I had planned on going to the home town for their first home game tonight, but between appointments and Labor Day traffic on IH-20 I didn’t make it.
Got to listen to most of in the innernut radio. Had I gone I would have left at halftime, the boys were up 48-7 at halftime and played kids that didn’t have numbers listed on the announcers roster sheet in the second half. The final was 55-7.
Their next home game is the 18th with Texarkana Arkie High. Might have to go see that one.

Good night to my Sooner friends, this guy is wore out.

  • CrimsonNative says:

I guess there’s no word on Obi?

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

No, he even said there’s no timetable for an announcement..

      • CrimsonNative says:

Oh okay, I must have misunderstood. I thought that statement was in reference to Robert Barnes. Thanks.

        • Jeremy Phillips says:

That was from Bob P. who spoke to Obi after the game in Tulsa last night.. Said he appreciated the Stoops brothers coming to watch him play but there is no decision or timetable for one..

      • holieway4ou says:

I thought he was supposed to announce yesterday. I’m thinking its Texas now. He just didn’t want to commit to them with Stoops in house. I hope I’m wrong.

  • Zack says:

Draft was tonight. Bradford made it to the 10th round and was picked by a homer friend of mine. 10 team league. I took a chance early landed both luck and Brady who I will trade later.

  • rphokc says:

us open tennis………hope any tennis hackers on here got to witness the nadal match tonite……….he got outsted in a 5 set, 4 hr plus marathon that ended around 130 am et ……first time in his pro career that he lost a match at a major after being up 2 sets……what a gutty, amazing performance by the italian, fognini, to win an absolute war and one of the best matches I have ever watched, even mac was amazed at the level of play………..if any of the cfb games sat can approach this it’ll be a great weekend…….

    • OUzaudioman says:

I’m a tennis pro here in Atlanta and I said when Nadal hit the scene big that I’d be shocked if he made it to age 30. He’s the ultimate grinder but these types wear out before their time. I don’t think Rafa wins anymore majors but love watching just in case. Excellent win for Fog and guts galore.

      • holieway4ou says:

Never was a Nadal fan. Federer just seems to keep re-inventing himself. Greatest player of all time IMO.

        • Walter Sobcek says:

I agree. And if he weren’t the greatest, hed still be the most amazing player to watch. He’s poety in motion.

      • rphokc says:

thxs for your insight on nadal……I’ve never seen a set like that 5th where break followed break for almost the whole set……..had to laugh at myself for standing up for most of that set while just watching, just couldn’t stay seated with the drama……..enjoy your weekend, boomer sooner!

  • SavageSoonerEsq says:

Not surprised about Obi…didn’t want to say it while OU was recruiting him, but I like Jordan Parker’s film better. Hopefully we can get him!

  • Ed Cotter says:

Listening to pregame on the radio. Apparently Dru Samia is going to start at right tackle for Josiah St. John.

  • Ed Cotter says:

3 and out by the D on Akron’s first possession. OU offense got a first down and then had to punt. Perine, 2 carries -1 yard. Yikes!

  • Ed Cotter says:

Dang…..2 OU possession 10 offensive yards and 1 first down. 15 penalty yards. Gotta get those jitters out guys! D has held Akron to 4 yards in two possessions, both three and outs.

  • Ed Cotter says:

Wow, 2 yard Mixon run, and then a 9 yard Westbrook LOSS on a reverse. Crazy!

I just went over to TFB, texsa edition, just to see what they are saying. The fighting bevos don’t seem to interact with the Mods so much. Unless I’m missing something, I only see communication between the Mods.
