Open Post | Monday, Aug. 24th

Du’Vonta Lampkin: As most of you know by now, 2015 DT Du’Vonta Lampkin has been admitted to the University of Oklahoma. The question most of you likely want answered, though, is whether or not he will be immediately eligible. According to Lampkin’s mother, the answer to that question is, “yes.”

Lampkin has already made it to Norman, and I spoke with Lampkin’s mother over the weekend regarding his eligibility and the status of his NLI. To summarize the rule as I understand it, the NLI becomes null and void if a prospective student athlete, “does not meet eligibility requirements by the institution’s opening day of class for the fall term.” The stipulation, as one would expect, is “provided he or she has submitted all necessary documents for eligibility determination…”

Mrs. Lampkin has been in regular communication with the NCAA throughout the summer. In fact, she went through a process with the NCAA of attempting to have the NLI voided early so that her son would have been eligible for fall camp. Texas submitted their response regarding her attempts to void the NLI back in July. And although Lampkin was not granted an early release from the NLI, according to Mrs. Lampkin the NCAA offices have told her, “Texas has up to the first day of class to send the denial letter.”

Mrs. Lampkin also tells me they have already submitted all the necessary documents for eligibility determination. As mentioned earlier, they have already been through the process with Texas and the NCAA in attempting to receive an early release from the NLI.

If Texas refuses to send a denial letter, then Mrs. Lampkin explains, in her understanding, that would make Texas, “out of compliance” with the NCAA.

Based on their continuing discussions with the NCAA throughout the summer, the family is of the belief that Lampkin will be immediately eligible to play. – (Super K)

Denzel Okafor: According to our own Andrew King, it looks like 2016 OL Denzel Okafor (Lewisville, TX) will take an official visit to Oklahoma:

Tramonda Moore: Speaking of offensive lineman, OK Preps 2016 OT Tramonda Moore (OKC) picked up three big offers over the weekend; Miami, Florida State & Auburn. Moore visited OU recently and seemed to enjoy his trip, but it sounds like a decision isn’t imminent. If you recall, Moore told TFB that he’d like to take some of his official visits. Moore also recently told me that he is somewhat of a Florida State fan, so they’ll be a team to watch out for going forward. – (Super K)

Quarterback Battle: If you’re anything like us here at TFB, you are hoping Bob Stoops/Lincoln Riley could end the suspense and announce a starter as soon as today. It certainly feels like a race between Baker Mayfield and Trevor Knight, though Cody Thomas did a good job of inserting himself into the competition. But based on what we have been told, he seemed to fade a tad down the stretch, which appeared to give Knight and Mayfield a bit of a leg up in the competition.

Thanks for the updates, Super K.
I know the Lampkin family will be more relieved than anyone when this saga has ended and they can move forward with their lives.
Look forward to a settling of the depth chart so the units can gel, as game prep for Akron will start in earnest at the end of this week.

    • Stephen Dale says:

One question in response to a Charlie Strong comment : did OU tamper with Lampkin’s decision ? Charlie Strong said he didn’t know… anybody with an ‘inside source’ to the family have a followup ?

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

If UT were to demand a tampering investigation, would that be the proverbial last straw between OU and UT? Stoops and Co are smart enough to keep themselves out of trouble over this. So it would be a waste of financial resources, something UT likes to claim they have the most of and wouldnt mind wasting it.

        • Stephen Dale says:

Dave : my first thought after reading Strong’s comment was it was intended to divert pressure off his program and UT and directly upon OU ….maybe I misinterpreted Strong —but I doubt it…..

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Oh Im sure thats the goal. But an unintended side effect is an already disgruntled David Boren, seeking greener pastures.(should be anyways)

          • Stephen Dale says:

            Dave : good point ….

        • Fear The Magic says:

If this really turned into a major investigation ( it won’t btw ) my bet is that Mack Brown turns out to be Deep Throat.

      • EasTex says:

        Don’t talk to me.

      • Scott Moore says:

I guess I’m just dumb. Answering a question, “I don’t know if OU tampered or not?” Makes me think, Ok, reporter trying to start some sh*t. Doesn’t make me think Charlie is trying to throw OU under the bus. Seems like people are paranoid around here.

      • RocketCitySooner says:

What does ‘tamper’ mean? Did Lampkin commit verbally to OU and then sign his LOI with UT? Was that ‘tampering’? Way I read it, ‘tampering’ would occur if OU contacted Lampkin about changing to OU. Surely, OU isn’t that dumb?

  • SoonerinLondon says:

Would love to see Lampkin available this year.

We need this transfer to go UNLIKE the recent transfers we’ve had. The last few seem to have had really bad luck or been outside the NCCA eligibility rules.

    We’re due for a break.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

He’s not even a transfer. He never went to another school.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

        Good point.
Hope he gets the release and is available this year. (even though he may not play this year)

        • Bob Edwards says:

By rule he will be eligible this year. Once the NLI becomes null and void it is as if he never signed one. So basically he would be like a walk on and OU could give him a scholly if they have one available.

That’s assuming that UT doesn’t try to find some way to screw him around via the NCAA

          • SoonerinLondon says:

Yes. I’m not as worried about the rule as I am the UT attorneys stubbornly trying to make a point.

          • Bob Edwards says:

They can try. But they would look pretty bad doing it. Talk about negative recruiting bait. They lie to the kid then screw him around when he can’t get eligible.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

            Tuck Fexas!!!!

          • Sooner 76 says:

Normally, you can’t have a player as a walkon whom you recruited for a scholly. However, that rule may not apply here, as he would get the scholly retroactive once his eligibility is determined.

    • Sooner 76 says:

It was very bad for Austin Roberts that his transcripts were delayed, as he missed most of camp.

    • Jaymou13 says:

Hoops got a pretty good transfer in Tashawn Thomas – lest we not forget!

  • Zack says:

What time will stoops talk to the media?

  • SavageSoonerEsq says:

If these young men would just choose OU in the beginning, their lives would be so much less complicated…I kid, I kid (not really). ?

  • Jason Vos says:

Even if he was eligible, Lampkin in all likelihood will redshirt. But at least he will be on the team and start bonding with his teammates. And provide depth on the scout team as well

    • Super K says:

You’re prob right but OU is very thin at the 3 tech spot. If an injury happens (God forbid) he may be needed in the rotation. It’s not likely he’d play but given the lack of depth I wouldn’t say it’s impossible.

      • Sooner 76 says:

Exactly. As I see it, if either Walker or Orso were to be injured, then the options would be: 1) insert Lampkin into the rotation; 2) move Tapper to 3-tech (he’s big enough); or 3) move a NT to 3-tech (Wade played some 3-tech in the spring game).

        • SoonerSpock says:

Is not RF Courtney Garnett if we lose players to injury. I know little has been said about him but he is still listed on the roster and I am unaware of any circumstances that would prohibit him from playing. I know he has put on 20 pounds since arriving in Norman.

          • EasTex says:

I thought he had a knee issue? Don’t know if he is healthy or not, never hear about him.

          • Sooner 76 says:

It was reported that he was back at practice, but no reports on how far along he is. I would assume that he’s fairly healthy if he’s practicing. But he lost almost the entire year to the injury, so I don’t know how behind he is.

        • EasTex says:

I still don’t think Neville Gallimore red shirts.

          • Sooner 76 says:

I’m with you, my friend. Although he’s behind Q Overton right now, I still think he sees the field either at NT or 3-tech if injuries occur.

But even if he redshirts, he will be a big difference maker at OU.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

We’re sure that is where he would/will be playing? Not questioning, just curious.

      • Jason Vos says:

        You forget Austin Roberts

    • Stephen Dale says:

Jason : I agree….Lampkin needs the redshirt for more than one reason : 1.) get his body into shape–football shape ; 2.) get a firm academic foundation by completing a year with no football interruptions ; 3.) remove all insinuations from Texas about any possible OU inproprieties ; 4.) simply gain more physical & emotional maturity.

      • Gladdman says:

Just don’t let him take a foreign language class. If he did, he would be eligible to transfer to texsa

  • BoomSoon says:

What time does Stoops meet with the media and will it be broadcast anywhere? Thanks.

  • Malicong says:

In case anyone missed it, (may have been int he comments on the weekend OP but there were only 1000 or so comments to sift through) Tennessee lost another starter for the year late last week. This time the starting nickle back.
    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/tennessee-cb-rashaan-gaulden-out-for-year-with-foot-injury-210725071.html

    • Stephen Dale says:

for a stacked Tennessee team with SEC talent everywhere , it should be “next man up” ….wouldn’t think it would hamper the Vols that much………

      • Malicong says:

As it was, he was playing a bunch as a true freshman. They don’t have much proven depth in the secondary and it was already somewhat of a question mark going in but they do have guys that were highly recruited. From what I gather he was also a special teams demon.

        • ouwooferman says:

This would make it Next Kid Up.

          • Malicong says:

Somewhat, but their situation is no different than OU’s if Mbanasor, Haughton, etc had to start for some reason. It is not like they have an experienced junior waiting in the wings but was passed up by a stud underclassman. They will probably be playing a freshman or a guy that has virtually never played in his place.

          • Fear The Magic says:

            Inexperienced freshman….meet Mr Shepard.

          • Jed says:

No, no, over here. THIS is Mr. Shepard. THAT … was Mr. Westbrook. Dunno where he went. Oh well, I’m sure you understand that feeling.

      • Eric Hoffpauir says:

It’s funny how easily you seem to discount everyone else’s question marks but massively magnify ours.

      • CrimsonNative says:

Oh i agree, he was only the No. 19 safety in the country and one of their best special teams players. Plus, it’s the SEC, they have proven depth at all positions everyday of the week. OU, on the other hand, if they lose a starter, well, their season is over and there’s not a single player that can step up and make a reasonable contribution.

        • Scott Moore says:

If you’re going to mimic he who shall not be named……… you need to add a lot of dot…. dot….. dot……also, your tone could be a little snootier. Trying putting your nose in the air as you type.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

They aren’t Bama or LSU yet. They are still building that depth. But you already knew that. Why even come here?

      • Fear The Magic says:

Your stacked Tennesse team with SEC talent is only rated #25 in the pre season poll while our unstacked OU team with lowly Big12 talent is#19. How is that even possible??

      • Doobie74OU says:

        >>>>>>>>>>>………….#@(*^%*@!*(^%*)*)!#*&$%*%!!!>>>………

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Man, that sucks. Never want to see someone injured.

  • David Raath says:

Any updates on Austin Roberts? I believe someone claims Al said on the radio that he’d overtaken Charles Walker on the depth chart (not believing that for a second). Nevertheless, if he’s even close to being a contributor, that would be huge.

    • Sooner 76 says:

How do you overtake Charles Walker by working out for 3 days in shells? Did he even get one practice in full pads?

      • soonerthunder says:

True. But I did hear Eschbach say that.

        • ouwooferman says:

          There’s your sign.

        • Sooner 76 says:

Not doubting you, my friend; just being logical again. My apologies!

          😉

          • soonerthunder says:

No, friend, I didn’t take it for doubting me, just confirming that I heard Eschbach say it. I agree with you entirely, but who says Eschbach and logic go together?

      • KJ1123 says:

Well, I guess it’s probably how you look at it, CW hasn’t been running with the 1s group at all for quite some time. So if you’re not in the 1s, you’re with the B group. I guess someone can look at it as, well they’re all in the B group and Austin is one of the better ones in the B group.

        • Jason Vos says:

          Whose been with the 1’s?

          • KJ1123 says:

Wade and Romar have been getting alot of work with the 1s. So has Dimon.

          • Matt says:

which one of them is playing the 3-tech? Should we not be expecting much out of Walker or Orso this year?

          • KJ1123 says:

Dimon has been mostly at end. But there have been a couple of times where he slid down, could of been a pre-snap adjustment though. I wouldn’t say we shouldn’t expect much, but Walker appeared to have taken a step back toward the end of camp.

          • Matt says:

so it sounds like they’re reducing the role of the 3-tech in the scheme?

          • KJ1123 says:

Im not really sure, but I did see alot of odd fronts. I think one of the main reasons is the speed we have at the edge though, we have alot good (rush) speed at the OLB position.

          • Jason Vos says:

so Tapper – Romar – Dimon – Striker?

          • KJ1123 says:

Yep I’ve seen them run that front. Whether that’s their final starting front, Im not sure, but Dimon gets alot of reps there.

          • Sooner 76 says:

I would expect Dimon – Romar – Tapper – Striker. I just can’t see Dimon at the 3-technique at the weight that’s on the latest roster.

          • KJ1123 says:

I agree about Dimon, I was surprised to see him there the first time. But apparently he’s pretty stout and strong at the point. I definitely agree about the size issue though.

          • Sooner 76 says:

It’s been a very interesting camp, with all the new faces and new coaches. Just saw an article from the DO from this Saturday (8/22) that stated that Walker was likely to start. So go figure. Your sources are probably than those of the DO. 🙂

          • KJ1123 says:

Haha I saw that too. Also saw an article on the 13th about St. John and being at LT. He was moved to RT way before that.

          • Jed says:

Are you saying we intend to rush the passer this year? Heresy!

          • KJ1123 says:

            Haha LIES!

          • Fear The Magic says:

Walker taking a step back = bummer.

          • KJ1123 says:

            Yeah it is.

          • Fear The Magic says:

Everyone from NFL scouts to his own teammates say that he has so much talent. Whats the problem? Laziness?

          • KJ1123 says:

I couldn’t say, I just know he wasn’t running with the 1s toward the end of camp. Could be a combo of things.

          • Fear The Magic says:

            Ok thanks.
I think a lot of us are/were counting on him to be a real force on the DL. Its discouraging.

          • KJ1123 says:

I think he still can be, maybe just had a rough time at the end of camp. But camps over now and depending on how things play out CW could still come on strong during the season.

          • KJ1123 says:

The scout teams were established today. CW was getting alot of work. They may be working him back into the rotation. Just wanted to mention it since we were talking about him. Definitely good news he can be a big impact player.

          • Sooner 76 says:

Thanks. Orso was the only other true 3-technique, so if Walker is not starting, then I assume it’s either Orso or Wade was moved.

          • hemisooner says:

that’s not a good sign. Not big Dimon believer. Hustle guy but not much of playmaker from either spot (DT or DE).

          • Jason Vos says:

Aren’t they both NT’s? Thought we were talking about 3 tech

          • Sooner 76 says:

Wade played some 3-tech in the spring game, so I assume he’s getting some reps there as well, as only Walker and Orso are on the depth chart at that position.

  • Mr. Jones says:

I noticed A&M offered rb Rakeem Boyd yesterday. I’m thinking that’s a good sign for OU getting Whaley.

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

When’s the next practice, and can we get a drone up to see who gets most QB snaps?

  • metzker says:

The horn board brainiacs is mighty slow over there

    • EasTex says:

      You looked?
      Ewww!

      • metzker says:

        Had to spy

        • EasTex says:

Okay, but that “Diaper Surprise” decoration is so off-putting.

          • metzker says:

            So true

          • EasTex says:

In the spirit of full disclosure, I did visit BON over the weekend to see what those arrogant arses were saying about the Lampkin saga.
I still have the “green apple quick steps” from going there.

          • Eric Hoffpauir says:

One of the elementary schools in our area has the Longhorns as a mascot. My daughter said this morning that she does not want to ever go to that school because she just can’t deal with having Longhorns as a school mascot. One of my proudest days as a parent so far.

          • EasTex says:

LOL! Makes you strut with the chest out a little.
My old high school is the “Mavericks.” They also use the hook’em horns sign. They do have the correct colors, though, bright red and white.
When I learned as a kid there was an impostor using our image and hand sign in Austin, I was outraged. Didn’t even know where Austin was at the time, but I sure knew where Norman and OKC were.

          • Jed says:

Indeed. I remember with misty eyes the day my daughter dumped the UT and OSU catalogs into the trash and, when asked why said, “I just can’t seriously consider going orange.”

      • Doobie74OU says:

I looked over the weekend cause I was hoping to he Longhorn side but nothing.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Part of it is that’s pretty new. If you look at the old TFB threads from the first couple of months, it was pretty much nothing. When Jordan came over from SB Nation, comment threads were still pretty small, too – only 50 or so for a non-game thread in the middle of the season.

    • KJ1123 says:

Pretty slow, but TFB is putting out some good info for their fans. I’m thinking maybe they don’t quite trust TFB (ZEE ENEMY) yet.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

I’m guessing we don’t get a QB announcement until later this week (Friday?), or next Monday.

    • KJ1123 says:

That’s what I’m thinking, they should be establishing the scout teams and what not today in practice I would assume, so we could quite possibly find out today.

      • Brien Brown says:

Yea I told my buddy i expect that they will wait until Friday or Saturday and that way they would have a full week as the number one, fully expect that we will see the top 2 guys against Akron at least that’s the hope. Super excited about the season as I always am but the old and new guys both team wise and coaching wise have me very optimistic about this year. BOOMER

    • Jed says:

I’m hoping they wait until the first offensive series. No reason I have to know and it keeps foes guessing.

    • EasTex says:

We could always go with an A-11 offense formation with two QBs.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Well, as long we have the mandatory 8 SEC teams in the Top 25…

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

I hope so too. If Rodney takes a RS, then there may be carries available. But if Rodney plays, he’s going to suck up most of the extra carries.

  • Cole says:

What time does stoops talk to the media?

  • KJ1123 says:

Baker starting….could be. All the outlets are jumping on it. But until it comes from Bob or Linc it’s just noise. Imo whoever they announce wont be a surprise, more of a “finally, now lets get ready for Akron.”

    • Sooner 76 says:

Right. I don’t get how some media are saying that they’ve “confirmed” it. Until we hear it from Bob or Lincoln, it’s still a rumor.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Confirmed means they talked to “their guy.” Problem is he’s probably the same guy that the other ones got their info from.

  • Bob Edwards says:

But this doesn’t answer the most important question. Who is the second string QB? After all he’s the most popular guy on campus.

  • Soonerfan24 says:

Have we confirmed that the source is not Dean Blevins?

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

So BM isn’t #2…pity, all the jokes we couldve had

  • KJ1123 says:

BR is re-reporting BM starting. Must be true.

  • SoonerGoneEast says:

I was really hoping all along that BM (and TK) wouldn’t be the guy and that we would all be pleasantly surprised to learn CT was our new starter. Oh well, if the reports are true then obviously the coaches believe BM gives us the best chance to win. I’m good with that, let’s just get this on and go bust Akron in the mouth already. Man the offseason is too long.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I’m good with it too. But thinking long term I’m hoping CT keeps his head up and this motivates him to get better and grab the next opportunity to play when it comes up. I’m not sure Mayfield (or any QB) will play a complete game in every game.

      • SoonerGoneEast says:

Apparently we’re lucky to have him, but I think it speaks volumes that a guy who couldn’t hold his position at Taco Tech has walked on and one the starting position at OU. Thankful to have him, but my oh my, someone sure wasn’t minding the store the last few years.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Cody Thomas was a 4-star QB. Hansen was as well.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

And Hansen is at Butler and CT is carrying a clipboard and BM, the guy who couldn’t win the starting job at TT, is your starter. Not trying to run him down, just saying that we have to have come to a pretty bad spot for this chain of events to even take place.

          • Jed says:

There’s nothing to do but wait and see, but it is possible that BM today is much improved over what he was several years ago at TT. Guys do improve over what they were as freshmen.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

True, Kliffy didn’t award Baker the TT job, and in fact didn’t even award him a scholly, but IMO that will prove to be a critical decision in his undoing.

Based on what I saw, Baker and Brewer were both better than Webb. And Brewer’s performance at VT did nothing to negate that last year, IMO.

So I wouldn’t read too much into Baker’s place on Kliffy’s depth chart. Early evidence would suggest Kliffy doesn’t know his head from his a$$hole as a head coach.

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

We don’t know the whole story at TT between Mayfield and Dingleberry. Who knows what went down?

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

Yeah, who’s to say what’s on KK’s mind, but I would think he would have his best QB on scholarship.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

He’s walked-on for two Big XII schools and won the starting job. Is there anyone else that has ever done that? Not saying he’s a NFL guy, but that is just amazing to me. You have to have some talent (and balls) to do that.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

Yeah, the kid is confident, no doubt. Again, not trying to run him down at all. I guess it’s hard for me to make the point that we have fallen to some degree without it appearing as a shot at him.

  • Jeff says:

K is Kelly visiting Texass like you said?
