OU Football Depth Chart Released

As promised Sunday evening, OU Football officially released the team’s depth chart late Monday morning for the Houston game. And with it came few surprises, at least if you’re a TFB reader and/or been following things throughout the spring/summer.

depth chart

The only real items of note, barring any surprises, were always going to come from the offensive line and they include Jonathan Alvarez listed as your starting center even after all the talk of Erick Wren through fall camp. Plus Alex Dalton at right guard, thus leaving Dru Samia at right tackle.

Other than that, no real shocks. The top seven or so wide receivers will be mostly interchangeable, so Jeffery Mead and AD Miller being an ‘OR’ situation really doesn’t mean anything. Jordan Wade ahead of Matt Romar at DT is as much injury related regarding the latter as anything else. You’ll probably see some people act like Parrish Cobb being ahead of PJ Mbanasor, but if you read TFB you knew about that last week. Meanwhile, kick and punt returners look exactly as Stoops said they would last Tuesday on his coaches show.

Of course if you see something I don’t, feel free to shout it out in the comments. Otherwise, now that we finally have the all important depth chart….discuss.

Will Gallimore see plenty of playing time even though he’s listed as a 3rd string de?

  • Jordan Esco says:

I’m really enjoying the ‘well Player X on/not on the OU depth chart is a bit of a surprise’ tweets from people who cover the team on a daily basis.

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Maybe they should buy a subscription to the TFB, then they would not be so surprised. LOL

      • Jordan Esco says:

you kid, but if you do have that job how are you not reading everything you can get your hands on? clearly that doesn’t happen, as to why I’ll never know.

if you’re there literally on a daily basis, there should be very little that surprises you when it comes to covering that team. or at least that’s my opinion.

        • Golfluvr13 says:

I kid, but it was somewhat serious. I just did not want to type everything you just typed. They obviously are just there to collect a paycheck and nothing more.

        • SoonerHat says:

You guys are on a completely different level though. It’s really nice to have this info, and know it’s gona be spot on when you read it. The other sports media guys, it seems to me they’re not paid to pay attention, they’re paid to fire out as much as they can as often as they can. They write articles on ther phones, by speaking into them, and they often don’t proofread at all, so there will be ten or twelve spelling or grammar errors, as well as just not making sense in places, in just the smallest lil ol article. It’s crazy, how can they just leave it like that?? They just don’t havta pay much attention as long as they run run run. I guess.. SO, once again, thank you guys, the work you all do is awesome and much appreciated!

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Very interesting to see the Center position notes – curious to hear some thoughts on that

  • Fear The Magic says:

    LBs Obo 245 J.Evans 235 Tay Evans 242.
    Finally Bama sized Linebackers.

    • Jordan says:

That is what I noticed too. That and our D-line is much bigger.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Such a pretty sight to see 🙂

    • TSFFKAG says:

      Where is McGuinnis?

    • Birddawg says:

Teams are watching tape of our 53rd ranked rush defense from last year.
Getting bigger at LB and deeper Dline we will make a jump in top 20 best run defenses in cfb.

I am a little surprised to see Seibert handling all 3 phases of the kicking game. Hope this doesn’t wear him down. I know plenty of guys do it but I think it is the first time I’ve seen it during Bob tenure.

    • Jordan Esco says:

that had been out there for a while now, but I agree w/ you re: possible concern. if from nothing else just a fatigue standpoint.

by far the biggest plus on special teams these past couple years was Nick Hodgson on KOs making returns virtually non-existent. i know we all remember the OU kickoff return units of past giving up multiple big returns at times.

  • Defend Colfax says:

Boomer Sooner. Let’s get it boys.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Appears we have a team, let’s get this thing rolling..

    • Zack says:

      What’s the deal with mbanasor?

      • Sooner Ray says:

No idea. He appears to have the tools, it would be my guess that he is just playing stiff and isn’t breaking with receivers the way he should be. K has been high on him.

      • Drew says:

He got hurt a while ago, I think it was a foot/ankle problem. Anyway, I think that nagged him for a few weeks and kept his reps low.

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Jordan, question for you. I know you mentioned the “OR” situation doesn’t really matter, and I think that’s probably true.

What I’m wondering is why it’s done. Is it an attempt at motivation for the players mentioned or just trying to put more names on the depth chart?

  • Christian Taylor says:

I’m most shocked my McGinnis over bothun at holder

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Looks like overall there will be some young players that will get some good playing time.

  • bjwalker82 says:

    Mbanasaurus..keep on grinding son

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

This offensive line Finna be beasts!

  • Fear The Magic says:

Basquine must have really impressed to jump past all of those schollie WRs.

    • Rick says:

I think the biggest impression was made on BM. I think he got his trust.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I mean Baxter did the same thing last season so it’s no shocker to me really. I just want miller to secure that final spot.

      • Fear The Magic says:

Im a Big AD fan as well.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

He just needs that first TD to get the monkey off his back. I think he’s going to straight Moss someone this first game.

      • Indy_sooner says:

seconded. AD will be a beast, my pick for breakout candidate in 2016

      • SoonerfanTU says:

        Miller faster than Mead, right?

As long as he can get open and catch the ball, I’d prefer to have the speedier guy out there. Westbrook, Baxter, and Andrews are all more possession type guys to me (though Westbrook does have some speed). Be nice to have a deep threat.

        • JB says:

Westbrook is probably the fastest guy out there, but his hands better improve drastically from last year.

  • COSooner says:

    No Arthur McGinnis?

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I think Obo’s first sack of the season may send me over the top! That dude is so jacked and when he crushes little GW I’m going to get lit lol

  • Sooner Jay says:

What happened to the DL Overton?

  • Raath says:

D-line still worries me. For a 3-4, we’re still far too undersized on the ends. REALLY wish Lampkin would’ve blown up during camp. Kid’s tailormade for this defense.

    • Fear The Magic says:

If Gallimore can make it to be a starter ( and it sounds like hes not too far off ) then we’re over 300 lbs across the DL. Thats anything but undersized.

      • Jordan says:

Yeah I actually looked at this and thought the exact opposite. The smallest guy is 265, everyone else is 275+

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

But with a 3/4 you really need your end positions at 285 minimum, IMO.

          • Jordan says:

I think the difference in 275 and 285 if you are athletic is pretty negligible. Especially in our case, because Ward and Roberts are very athletic.

          • Andrew R says:

Fully expect A-Rob to be a beast this season… Gotta live up to the name right?

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I believe we’ll be rotating those big boys enough for him to get valuable playing time.

  • Birddawg says:

    Seeing it on paper,
    Our Oline is young

  • Bob Edwards says:

Surprised to see Seibert not holding and snapping. He’s doing everything else.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

5 true freshman on defensive depth chart

  • Matt says:

does anyone like Eddie Rado? Seems like a total douche to me

    • RBear says:

don’t know him personally, get info from his twit though

      • Matt says:

yeah I don’t know him either he just comes across as kind of a jerk on twitter. He tweeted out the depth chart and then tweeted out that he didn’t want anyone to tweet him with thoughts on it. Why is he even a Sooners writer if he doesn’t want to hear from fans?

  • TSFFKAG says:

    Where’s Lampkin?

    • Indy_sooner says:

      injury

    • KJ1123 says:

They’re not injured, they’re just not good enough to get in the two deep yet. I dont see Arthur ever getting in the two deep, just my opinion.

      • Matt says:

        you know anything about Overton?

        • KJ1123 says:

He’s fine, still getting reps….but idk it seems like everyone is thinking he should be the starter or something, just because he isnt listed doesn’t mean he’s not playing or getting playing time.

      • Sooner Jay says:

Do you think Arthur will be eventually moved to DE or just give depth and #’s at LB?

        • KJ1123 says:

I dont think he will get moved, more dpeth like you mentioned, I think come next year (depending on how we finish in recruiting) he may get buried in the depth chart.

          • Ura Hogg says:

Hope he sees that possibility and takes it as motivation to excel.

          • KJ1123 says:

I hope so, I think kids underestimate the process and what it takes to succeed coming in. I’m hoping he proves me wrong, I just think we are recruiting really well at LB so he needs to really get to work.

          • Maranatha846 says:

Do you look for any of the ones buried on the depth chart to move on? I like to see those that are move out and free up schollys.

  • OHboomersooner says:

Other than Baker Mayfield, who do you all think is the one player we can least afford to lose?

  • Ura Hogg says:

The guy on the O-Line that I don’t know much about is Quinn Mittermeier who’s backing up the immovable Orlando Brown. How big of a fall off is it if Mittermeier has to come in for Brown?

  • Super K says:

    Que Overton…

  • Maverick says:

This is not going to be a popular opinion, but I just don’t see the talent here to compete for #8 this year. It could happen of course. We weren’t the most talented team in 2000 either.

Our LB group, OL, and WRs are probably all out of the top 5 in CFB.

I’m thinking this is a 3 or so loss year.

    • Chris White says:

I’m saving this message to hopefully rub in your face later

    • Ura Hogg says:

I was looking for a … somewhere in those comments. lol
Certainly hope you’re wrong, and those kids are all coached up this year.

    • Fear The Magic says:

      Blaspheme!

    • Birddawg says:

      Without Crimson glasses,
      I HATE our schedule…
I hate the byes, I hate Thursday game, I hate the opener Houston game, I hate the TCU trap game.
But, Sooner magic lives in Baker. He’s legit.
We have arguably the top Qb in cfb. That goes a long way to winning games.
      We have best rb tandem.
Like every year every team has question marks. I would take knowing we have a Qb,rbs, and a secondary and Q’s at Oline, wr, and pass rush over some Q’s that most of cfb has…
      Believe brotha.
We are about to have another great season.

      • Ura Hogg says:

I’m liking that sunshine! Especially leading up to the opening game.
        Boomer Sooner!

      • Scott says:

Baker has TCU marked on his schedule. Let me just say he’s pissed off.

      • Maverick says:

Haha, love that you started with them off and put them right back on halfway through! I hope you’re right. I have all the hope in the world, just not a ton of faith yet.

      • Oscar says:

The key to the year on offense will be, when Baker buys time setting up the posibility of a special play, the receivers will need to “be there”. The team needs to know that those guys will be difference makers.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Who made this schedule? They should have opened with LM. Then Houston, then do like the SEC and throw in a Big 12 game at Kansas, then Ohio St, TCU, Texas.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t see us as a 3 loss team, but I’m not sure I see a NC team either. Not enough improvement on the lines over last year, where we got killed against the really good teams. Probably be a downfall again this year. And with the tougher schedule, and some “dangerous” road games at TT and WVU, I’m predicting a 1 loss regular season. But I’d be pretty shocked if we stayed healthy and lost 3 in the regular season.

    • Scott says:

We made the playoff last year with a terrible oline and with a bunch of 1st year coaches on the team. I know for a fact that this team has the DESIRE & WILL to prove everyone wrong this year.

      • TSFFKAG says:

We could have a 3 loss season or we could win it all. We have the talent and desire. At this point, so much depends on injuries and off-field situations, coin flips, field position and simply the way the ball bounces.

      • Maverick says:

That’s part of the problem imo. That senior leadership of Shep, Striker, Darlington is all gone. We really don’t know yet what their mental makeup will be.

I know I don’t like all the hype we’re getting.

        • Ura Hogg says:

Although there’s quite a bit of hype as a team, about the only individual getting national acclaim is Mayfield. Hopefully that will be some added motivation, especially on D to prove themselves, while still keeping the team first mentality.

        • Maverick says:

I’ll be honest, part of my prediction is based on the fact that it’s really really hard to make the playoff, go through the year healthy, etc. A ton of things all have to go right.

This is the most competitive CFB has probably ever been. It’s not easy.

          • Rick says:

It’s hard to argue your opinion talent wise. I have been pleasantly surprized at times as young players mature physically to see what becomes of them. Im hoping with certain players in leadership roles that this team is one of those teams that grows up together and competes on a very high scale.

        • Scott says:

I love Darlington but the guy was undersized and got handled against the big boys. I loved Striker but OU is bigger and possibly faster at OLB. Now on offense , this Air Raid offense is setup to spread the ball around to all the WR’s. Last year OU was to dependant on Shep and teams could easily gameplan to stop Shep which we saw in the Clemson game.

          • Maverick says:

Getting the calls for the OL right is a big deal. His leadership was key for the line. I hope someone fills those shoes.

In my opinion, the reason we were so dependent on Shep was that no one else was ready to step up and demand the ball. We didn’t have any other choice. Someone is going to have to be that guy. But no one is going to be what Shep was. So that’s a downgrade imo.

          • Scott says:

OU doesnt need a ” go to WR ” in this Air raid offense. You think Texas Tech & Okie St have a go to WR? No but they always have a top 5 offense every year.

          • Maverick says:

Not sure where you’re getting that, but it’s very much incorrect.

Tech has had Crabtree, Grant, Amaro, etc. OSU had good offenses only when they had dominant WR like Blackman. Baylor has had 3 or 4 dominant Wr’s. TCU had a go to Wr for the last few years, etc.

Hardy at ECU for Lincoln Riley broke Broyle’s all time receptions record. Having a go-to WR is critical for any team that wants to win on third down and make big plays.

          • Maverick says:

    • JB says:

I agree and disagree with you. I agree we don’t likely have the talent on D we need to win the NC.

But make no mistake, that 2000 team had a great deal of talent, especially on D where it was loaded with NFL players. Being there, in person, OU had better talent all around than Florida State. About the only position I’d have given the nod to FSU was the WR depth. That’s it.

      • Maverick says:

I’ll defer to you on that one. I was about 15 at the time, lol. I think of that team synonymous with Rocky. Refused to lose despite not always being the best.

    • Ura Hogg says:

I’ll take the under on the 3 losses.

    • Randy says:

WRs just need to catch the easy ones, make a play when the ball is in the air a couple of times a game nothing more. OL, RBs and Baker are the offense. Ogo and C Walker will have big years like move in the 1st RD of the NFL draft years. If A Thomas can continue as he did the last half of the year the secondary will be hard to beat deep and will get punished on short routes.. J Thomas is the only one that concerns me need his head in the game, every game.

      • Maverick says:

No offense, but if you listen to fans around college football, there’s at least 150 players going in the first round of the draft next year.

    • Randy says:

I have no idea if we can do #8 this year or not. Lots of things have to come together, with a bit of luck tossed in too. But I just enjoy the whole process of the season and take joy in watching the team grow and get better. If they can go the whole way and win the Big Kahuna then awesome. If not, then I still had a lot of fun as a fan anyway.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well, are you saying we aren’t going average 45 points? If we do that, this is an 11-1 team and should have a spot in the playoff. After that anything can happen. This my goal for the team.

  • TSFFKAG says:

With players the quality of Lampkin, Overton and McGuinnis not starting or even making the 2-deep, I’m starting to cringe in pain for the opponents.

  • BamaSooner#12! says:

I have a feeling Mixon will be running some punts back for TD’s this year and help resurrect our special teams play!

    • Maverick says:

That would be nice! Love Shep but he was downgrade over the prior years at punt return. Or he was being coached poorly, some of both maybe.

    • Sacramento Sooner says:

Special teams changes the game…kinda like both Clemson games in the playoffs. Hope the coaches were watching. He would be great back there!

      • Maverick says:

I blame the entire ’04 National Championship loss on Bradley’s fumbled punt return. We were in control until then.

        • Sacramento Sooner says:

sooooo true! I’ve said that so many times. That muffed return completely changed the game. We fell apart after that.

  • jaobryan1 says:

Outside of the RBs, this is not a very impressive roster at all. OU needs to win a championship to further boost recruiting so that the roster can be loaded two deep with 4 and 5 star players, like at Ohio State, Bama, Florida State, etc. Nonetheless, there’s still hope for #8 this year, heck Oregon made it to the championship with mostly 3 star players

    • Chris White says:

I get your point but you should also feel optimistic with this roster. Good experience, depth and better size than in years past. We also don’t have Josh Heuple’s system anymore that crippled our Wide outs. There is a great opportunity for this squad! Not to mention this season hasn’t started and we already have a loaded 2017 class!

    • Maverick says:

We’re one Malik Jefferson and a couple OL away from being close to those others. The “Fire Kish” era is showing right now.

    • RDC212 says:

It’s a better roster than we had last year…

      • Maverick says:

You think so? I’d say we potentially downgraded at WR, LB, DE, one CB, and C. Not sure where where if anywhere we got better, but we’re gonna find out soon.

        • Michael says:

to play devil’s advocate, you could argue that we “potentially” upgraded in each of those positions as well. Also, retaining stars in Perine, Mixon, Baker almost has to be considered an upgrade if only because they are a year older and one year down in Riley’s system, right?

          • Maverick says:

I guess you can say that Perine, Mixon, etc. will be better.

I’m not sure how you can say Mayfield could be an upgrade, he can’t play much better than he did last year.

For the rest of them, I’m gonna say no. Striker, Tapper, Sanchez, Darlington, Shep, Bond, and Alexander would all be starting again this year if they were back.

          • Boom says:

Mayfield couldn’t play better, ummm. There is no such thing as a perfect QB. Even the best have to bust their ass to get better and they make mistakes all the time. Bake has only played a year and a half. Trust me, he can get a lot better just like the others. Don’t get me wrong, I love Bake as our QB but everyone can play better.

          • Maverick says:

I said much better. Everyone can always play better if you want to get that technical. It will be very hard for Mayfield to put up a similar performance this year without Shep. Just my opinion.

          • Dick Bump says:

            …damned discus..

          • Michael says:

That is an interesting way to put it and you are probably correct in re: to them being starters this year. I suppose the best I could argue is that, though they would start, should they? We were the 54th(?) best (or worst) team in run defense last year. I am not putting all the blame on those players, but given the number of reps they each took, they certainly shoulder a good deal of blame. Now whether we improve on that this year remains to be seen. One can not judge the value of “another year older/another year in system, another year to physically and mentally develop” until you see it on the field. I would say for some it makes all the difference in the world, for some it makes no difference. Let’s hope for our sake it is the former. Honestly would rather Walker on the field than Tapper. We swap out a 225 pound ILB for a 242 lb’r. A 225 pound OLB for a 245 lb’r.

As for WR’s I think it is fair to assume Andrews will benefit individually from the absence of Shep. Not saying he will be a 1000 yd receiver but he will be huge. We do need people to make plays here though, without a doubt.

In all there seems to be plenty to be optimistic about. The many unknowns is concerning. The tough schedule is..tough. Cannot wait to see our boys play!

          • Maverick says:

Agree with everything you said. Hard to know until they get on the field. My whole point is that there are positions on this team where we are still pretty weak and not elite.

          • Michael says:

Across the board, we still do not have the raw talent of teams like Bama and tOSU, i agree. That being said, I think we have the team to beat both of them. An elite QB and good system can cover up a lot of deficiencies elsewhere. Think Oregon 2014. Hopefully we get the opportunity to prove that!

        • RDC212 says:

Across the board I think we’re better at WR. Mayfield will spread the ball more. Also, Alexander was assignment sound but undersized. We’ve got better athletes. Just less experience.

          • Maverick says:

So you think the Wr’s that were here got a lot better? Cause all those guys were here last year.

          • Boom says:

Does every WR on all teams go to the NFL? No, only a select few make it. That said, we have a solid group. Having year 2 will help them be more confident in their routes which will make them play faster.

          • Maverick says:

            I hope you’re right.

          • Boom says:

If a WR come in as a Fr and starts, then he’s just special and will play on Sundays. Stills, Shep are to that come to mind. Not many around that can do that. Heck, it took AD till UT game to start. My point is the depth is getting better in a much better system. I think they will play much faster than a year ago. Again, I’m not saying they are NFL guys, but good WRs.

          • Maverick says:

Yeah I see what you’re saying. What I’m saying is that I think the position has been downgraded since last year. The fact that none of them completely blew the others away tells me that they are inconsistent. Doesn’t matter what system you’re in, talent is talent.

This is all just prediction though, we’ll see how they perform on the field. If they come out and dominate, I’ll be thrilled.

          • RDC212 says:

Mayfield will be more inclined tos spread the ball around. We don’t have anyone the caliber of Shepard. We do have much better depth though. Especially with Andrews taking on a bigger role.

          • Maverick says:

Why better depth when they were all here last year?

          • RDC212 says:

Because guys like Andrews, Baxter, Miller etc have all had another year in the system. Mayfield had to lean hard on Shep because those guys were all so green.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Mead better catch the ball like he did against Clemson.

        • Coach JK says:

Maybe a small downgrade at center mentally, but certainly not physically.

    • Coach JK says:

I can tell you for sure that we are as deep as we have been, with quality depth, since the early 2000s.

  • Scott says:

I really wanted Wren to start at Center. Alvarez got smacked around alot last year.

    • Maverick says:

Well Wren was here last year too. So if he couldn’t beat out Alvarez last year, he had an uphill battle this year as well.

  • hOUligan says:

First impression, good depth everywhere. Have backups at most position on the Oline not just a couple of utility guys. And size at DE 275-300. Wow. Then the added size at LB.

    • RDC212 says:

Gallimore and Overton need to be taking reps away from lighter guys. If they can be assignment sound the talent gap isn’t even close between these guys and guys like Dimon.

      • Daryl says:

Well one thing you have made very clear is that you are not a Dimon fan at all. I thought he played well last year, but don’t disagree that the upside of someone like Gallimore I would really like to see on the field.

        • hOUligan says:

Agree. I’ve always been a Dimon fan. Guys are bigger and maybe blessed with more pure athleticism but he’s a good blend plus heart. Nobody outworks him and he’s assignment sound.

        • Jpsooner23 says:

          HAHA, yes he has.

        • RDC212 says:

Dimon does well against Big 12 offenses. He’s actually a great fit for that. He just gets abused against bigger more physical teams. Basically, the type of teams we’d have to beat in the CFP.

          • 22dupree says:

Exactly RCD212. And that playoff game was even worse because with Walker out, we had no depth. Ward is also undersized vs. the elites. I hope Gallimore is ready to go, especially vs. Ohio State.

          • RDC212 says:

Add Overton to that list as well.

      • DCinAZ says:

        I actually agree with you

      • Jpsooner23 says:

Move the period from the end of “guys” to the end of “sound” and I agree 100%.

    • CrimsonNative says:

I’m not exactly sold on the depth at LT. Looks to be quite a bit of a drop off in talent and size between Brown and Mittermeier.

  • Ura Hogg says:

Really looking forward to seeing Caleb Kelly show what he can do. There’s a good possibility he’ll be the start of an impressive line of LB’s for OU considering those coming in. Be nice to elevate the way OUr defense is viewed across the country. Talent coupled with execution is the solution.

  • Chris White says:

I still wish we could find some option at punter or at least kickoff, I feel like that would get exhausting to kick everything and still be clutch if we need a game winning field goal…Also thought Abdul Adams would get the Punt Return job for more experience but then again, if we just fair catch it every time it doesn’t matter.

    • Ura Hogg says:

Let’s hope Coach Stoops has his foot on the throttle all year, including on punt returns. The offense won’t be a problem, but special teams play certainly can make the difference when facing the tough teams.

      • 22dupree says:

True Ura. I’m hoping that the assertiveness/activity on returns increases because it looked like a drill performed at half-speed. We never really moved. Dabs took full advantage of us standing around on punt return to run that fake punt/pass to the nose tackle to grab momentum in that game.

  • JSam says:

Brooks and Mixon back on kickoff… Seriously, who do you kick to?

    • Ura Hogg says:

I think Brooks will get more than his share to take a kick all the way as teams will be more inclined to fear Mixon’s potential. And Brooks seems perfectly suited for the task.

  • RDC212 says:

Hoping Johnson is only on the field as a nickel back. He doesn’t need to be playing OLB.

    • Maverick says:

It’s based on what set the offense is in. Number of Wr’s will dictate whether it’s him or Doucet. He’s a decent edge rush guy though.

    • DCinAZ says:

Get ready for it. He has already said Mike wants him playing closer to the LoS and I’ve read that he’s the new Striker blah, blah, blah….

      • RDC212 says:

That’s a terrible idea. Striker was a liability except for in obvious passing downs. Johnson does have better coverage skills than striker, but I question whether he’ll be as effective as a pass rusher. If he’s expected to set the edge he’s going to get turned inside out.

        • Boom says:

Then may be you need to get Mike Stoops on the phone and let him know your analysis of Johnson. Don’t wait!

          • RDC212 says:

Thanks for your input. It’s insight like this that really makes this board interesting.

          • Boom says:

What I don’t do is hammer a player. If Johnson is in the game, he will be covering the majority of the time but he just may be closer to the line in this assignment. That said, he could do press or blitz. What I do like about Johnson is he is a very good tackler.

          • RDC212 says:

I was very impressed with how Johnson tackled in open space. I just don’t like the idea of him setting the edge.

          • Boom says:

He won’t in most situations unless it just happens to be a run play. We will still have an OLB on the field which will help.

        • Jpsooner23 says:

Of course he wont pressure like Striker and of course he will cover better.
Where are these guys you want that can get 10+ sacks and cover a slot guy?

          • RDC212 says:

I just want the right guy in there for the right moment. Striker was on the field too often tbh.

          • Jpsooner23 says:

I would assume that’s exactly what they will do. Johnson will play in the more 3-3-5 style sets and Doucet/Kelly will play in the 3-4-4.

          • RDC212 says:

I’m not disagreeing. I hope that’s what happens.

          • Boom says:

That is what happened last year. When Johnson was the NB, the LB opposite of Striker (forgot his name) would come out.

          • RDC212 says:

It was Bond. Striker should’ve been a situational player rather than an every down player imo. If that’s what they’re doing with Johnson, that’s great.

          • Jpsooner23 says:

Most likely that is what they are doing, but giving Johnson some more ability to do more than just cover. He may surprise you setting the edge when he has to. He was a master at blowing through WR screen blocks and busting up plays like that. Extremely good positioning himself, shedding blocks, and making a solid tackle. I know its different getting closer to interior but I like utilizing his skill set for more than just a slot cover guy.

          • RDC212 says:

Given the love for WR screens in our conference, Johnson is very useful against those teams.

          • soonerSD says:

I was really impressed with him last season. I really look forward to seeing if he’s improved his game even more this year.

          • Boom says:

That is what happened last year. When Johnson was the NB, the LB opposite of Striker (forgot his name) would come out.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

            In Tuscaloosa or Columbus.

          • Jpsooner23 says:

Um, no not even there and either way we run with what we have.

Did you see what Tuscaloosa had against Clemson?

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

That’s insane he is tiny. I suppose it’ll be effective against Big 12 opponents excluded Texas and Iowa st, K St. But a liability v A Clemson, Houston, OSU.

  • Spitting Bull says:

Oh boy, can’t wait to see Mighty Joe Mixon in the return game. Going to see some smoke….folks left grasping at air…

    • Ura Hogg says:

I like that, he’s not Little Joe, he’s Mighty Joe!

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

To me, Mixon in the open field, is no Little Joe or Demarco.

      • Boom says:

Then in your opinion, who does he remind you of?

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I just don’t think it’s wise. He is not that shifty nor does he have Brooks or Ross speed. But with that said, reminds me of Kniles Davis of the Chiefs. On returns that’ll be good enough. But injury factor is my real concern. You don’t see J Charles back on returns.

          • Spitting Bull says:

Jamal Charles doesn’t have Perine starting beside him. Mixon is going to blow you away this year. Wait and see my friend.

          • Hartshorne Miner says:

I agree with you. Mixon is more shifty than some give him credit for. Like you, I’m expecting him to surprise with his productivity in the return game.

          • soonerSD says:

He broke the TTech linebacker’s ankles on a touchdown last season. Made the guy look silly. There is literally no comparison when it comes the shiftiness/moves between Ross and Mixon. The only thing Ross has or had over Mixon is top end speed, IMO.

          • soonerSD says:

Did Jamal Charles return kicks at UT? It seems like I recall him returning some?

          • soonerSD says:

I think MIxon could take Ross in the 40 yr dash but would lose to him in the 100.

Mixon seems to have a MUCH more powerful lower body. When he gets going I predict defenders will have a hard time bringing him down.

  • DCinAZ says:

Interesting that we heard so much about Basquine and Mykel Jones during camp but neither one of these two guys managed to pass Baxter, whom we heard nothing about at all?

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Seems like good news that Baxter has raised his game.

    • Jpsooner23 says:

Typically not going to hear a whole lot about the guys that were pretty much locked in already unless they aren’t doing well. Everything written on Baxter has had him locked in as a starter all off season. I take this to mean he is solid. Basquine will see the field though.

      • Rick says:

BM has praised Basquine all spring.

      • DCinAZ says:

I don’t see any reason why Baxter would’ve been “locked in” IMO.

        • Jpsooner23 says:

That’s just what I’ve read all off season. Not saying he should or shouldn’t, but him, Andrews, and Dede have been listed as the 3 with the 4th spot open.
They will all play a lot of snaps anyway I think.

        • Rick says:

Baxter is a great story, I think most of us really pull for a guy like this to succeed. He has shown flashes of talent at times.

    • Scott says:

I wouldnt be concerned , everybody will get catches this year.

    • Maverick says:

Sometimes I think the proven guys aren’t thought of when people ask “Who has stood out?” Baxter played quite a bit last year, so he’s not going to surprise people as much as guys that might not have played yet.

      • soonerSD says:

Agreed, and Baxter made some pretty big catches last year. Sure handed and with another year in the system one would imagine he’ll be even better this year when it comes to overall production.

  • Jpsooner23 says:

Thought (may be WAY off base) – Could Alvarez be starting at C due to the first opponent and their tendency to stunt, twist, etc. and BB wants the more athletic/game experienced guy in for that game and plans to work Wren as starter after that??

    • KJ1123 says:

Game experience, Wren has a tendancy to get a little overly excited.

      • Jpsooner23 says:

That’s what I’m getting at. That and he’s more athletic. You think this is potentially the direction?

        • KJ1123 says:

I don’t think they are too off as far as athleticism other than I think Alvarez runs better. I think BB trusts Alvarez because he’s been in bigger games and mentally will not let the pressure get to him.

          • Jpsooner23 says:

I’m calling it then – Alvarez starts against UH, Wren against ULM. Wren takes it and runs with it.

  • Cesooner says:

Ruben Hunter backing up J. Evans at ILB is new to me.

  • j l says:

Love seeing 2 big WR starting. We have lacked tall, impact WR for basically the entire stoops era. Its worked out for us regardless, but i think it can only make us better.

    • kt-raida says:

i feel like Mann was a filler commit. no disrespect to the young man.

    • kt-raida says:

i feel like Mann was a filler commit. no disrespect to the young man.

    • soonerSD says:

I don’t recall his height but I feel like Malcom Kelly was a pretty tall receiver… 6’4ish, maybe?

I do get your point though…. I’ve been dying for more tall playmaker receivers. I really wanted to see DGB for one season.

  • Coach JK says:

Wow, Overton and Lampkin didn’t even make the depth chart. I thought we would at least see Overton on there.

  • soonerjunky says:

Arthur McGinnis? Thought Kish said he’s been making strides. Must have been way back on the depth chart

    • Boom says:

K and some of the other mods have said that McGinnis is a little stiff at LB. Also, he’s learning this position since he played with his hand in the dirt in HS. What I’m taking from Kish is McGinnis has improved a lot from where he was and that may not be that good. The good thing is, he’s improving and putting in the work.

    • Jordan Esco says:

this is your daily reminder not to take everything the coaches say the the local media “reports” at face value 🙂

    • Rick says:

From what I remember about Kish’s remarks were he showed the most improvement of any oh the LB’s. This type statement doesn’t always mean he’s the best at his position.

  • SoonerSouthoftheRed says:

Seeing that Fr. next to the backup QB is a little sketchy. Obviously this season rides on Baker staying healthy through the campaign.

    • Rick says:

A true Fr starting is sketchy. A Fr QB can be really scary! If the reports out of camp are not being trumped up, he is doing very well.

  • Randy says:

Thoughts ? What if they want a NB in the game and Will Johnson is unavailable for whatever reason ? Does C Sylvie, P McKinney, A Stephens or one of the back up S or CBs come in ?

  • bommer85 says:

Just reading Mixon’s name as a KR makes me think of demarco getiing injured, not a fan of star players returning kicks. Should be a specialist type thing IMO…also trying not to read to into the DL chart. i would be shocked if some of the younger guys like gallimore and Overton arent playing a lot sooner than later

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Dimon beats out Gallimore? Dimon is not disruptive and does not demand doubles…Not happy. Where’s Q?

      • RDC212 says:

Doesn’t surprise me Dimon is higher on the depth chart as a senior. However, as Gallimore proves himself he should be taking reps from Dimon.

  • LandThieve3 says:

Can’t help but look towards next year looking at the depth chart. Good news – the entire OL should be returning. Bad news – losing 4 across the DL most likely and potentially losing the entire secondary along with Jordan Evans at ILB. Yikes.

  • Ryan Whatcott says:

    Will Johnson as outside linebacker?

    • SoonerFan92 says:

Believe he was listed as that for when they are in their Nickel defense, which will bring Doucet or Kelly off of the field and he will replace them to cover an extra receiver.

  • Travis Hill says:

So, Mixon/Brooks an upgrade over Ross? I would tend to think so but this is only like my 3rd post…

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Don’t like Mixon back there on returns. Perine has been injured in both years. Mixon does not have to be put in a position where he’s more likely to get hurt. I hope I am mistaken.

  • Wood says:

Ross was the best as long as he didn’t have to move left or right.

  • Dick Bump says:

I think most on this board would be happy with a consistent, healthy BM, week-in, week-out throughout the season. Everything else will work itself out.

  • soonerSD says:

I almost feel sorry for any DB’s the opposing teams put on kickoff trying to stop Mixon with a full head of steam.

With Rodney’s injury I’m a little less supportive of Mixon back there but WTF give the playmaker the rock…. we don’t even know if he’ll be around this time next year.
