Obi Eboh: Yesterday, Southlake Carroll 2016 cornerback Obi Eboh tweeted out that he received offers from Oklahoma and Arkansas. I was not able to catch up with Eboh, but I did speak with someone close to his recruitment. I asked this person if Eboh planned on visiting next week for the OU camp, and this person said Eboh’s been to Norman twice already so there really isn’t much more for him to see. It seems, according to this person, that Eboh already has a comfort level with both OU and the staff.

Based on past conversations with Eboh, I get the sense that the ‘game-changing’ offer for him would be Stanford. I do think, however, considering his current crop of offers that the Sooners will be in the mix. But I also know schools like Stanford and Duke are very attractive to Eboh due to their academic prestige. He does currently hold an offer from Duke and has been evaluated by Stanford. I’m told they (Stanford) like him but do not appear ready to offer just yet.

I was also told to expect Eboh to make a decision regarding a commitment before his season is over.

Film Notes – For those of you not familiar with Eboh’s game, he is a long, fast cornerback. Gives a great presence setting the edge against the run as a nub, or being physical in the flat. Very comfortable playing anything deep. He’s also a well-coached, smart player.

One particular play that stands out from his film features him in ‘quarters’ coverage, he gets a switch and plays his outside zone then correctly transitions and matches up man-to-man up the field. If there was something I’d question about Eboh, it would be his feet. Occasionally, he can a look a little heavy footed. But he has good eyes for a corner and uses that advantage to break quickly on the ball.

He has the frame, speed, and mental capacity to perhaps transition to safety, if it appeared necessary. You want your safeties reading things well, but a lot of that is about recognizing alignments, personnel, movements, etc. And Eboh’s background as a well-coached football player and academic guy gives me the confidence to think that if a switch was necessary, it could be made. – (Super K)

Dalton Wood: As most of you know by now, Wood was finally expected to report this week. I haven’t received confirmation whether he has arrived yet, but I was told by a source that he’s expected this afternoon. And I certainly hope that is the case. I thought it might be a good time to tell you all a little about Wood as an athlete, and where the Sooners may play him.

Simply put, you aren’t going to find many human beings like Wood. I was told by a staff member at McAlester that they recently measured Wood at 6’4.5″ without shoes, and he already weighs nearly 260 pounds. That means, based on size alone, he could potentially transition to any position on either offensive or defensive line, including offensive tackle. But what is really remarkable about Wood is he isn’t just some lumbering big guy. He’s light-footed, has great twitch, and doesn’t have any discernible stiffness through his knees, hips or ankles. He even runs on his fore like you’d see a smaller athlete do. He also appears to have good top end speed on film.

As an athlete with his kind of size, Wood really is a rare specimen. I’ve been told that OU will start him out as a TE/H-Back, however the word is there are actually a number of coaches on the staff fighting over Wood. And on his film, you can absolutely see why. I’m not familiar enough with his work ethic or character to truly be the judge, but if he’s a high-effort young man that will put in the work (and based on his build you’d have to imagine he’s at least doing work in the weight room) then there are any number of positions he could excel at.

I was actually told by one of the McAlester coaches that Wood was, at one point, used as an overhang player on defense. Given his size you wouldn’t think that’s possible, but his change of direction is so good that I certainly wouldn’t argue with someone if they told me he could manage it, even at his current size. I genuinely do not believe it’s a stretch to say that based strictly on size and athleticism (and again, he’s got to develop the other qualities necessary), he could play multiple spots on the offensive line, multiple techniques on the defensive line including a 5 or a 7 and, heck, maybe he could even be an overhang against run sets.

Wood is electric with the ball in his hands, but I’d love to see such a big, athletic young man transition to the Sooner defense if possible. Admittedly, however, part of that is certainly my preference for defense in general. But another big part of it is I think OU already has a number of potential difference makers on the offensive side of the ball. Wood looks like he could be a real difference maker on the defensive side of the ball. And you can never have enough of those. – (Super K)

    Give me news!

  • Cory Reedy says:

Hale reported that Dalton Wood packed up and left Norman. Any truth to the speculation?

    • Super K says:

I hope not. This dude could be special. Last I heard from a source is that OU was expecting him to report this afternoon but probably won’t know more until then. If I’m coach Stoops, I’d walk to McAlester to get this kid lol

      • Okie80 says:

Super K, you are correct about being an Phenomenal athlete! Only time well time how he handles the stress of competition and not being the only star on the field

        • Super K says:

We all need help sometimes. I hope he gets whatever he needs and accepts it. I know some of his teammates have reached out to him. I really think he could be a special edition to the Sooners down the road.

          • Okie80 says:

I would totally agree! I hope he sticks it out and has a nice career at OU!

          • Okie80 says:

I was on that another message board ( the mothership ) folks are claiming he has left Norman again
and struggling with personal issues / family. I would hate to lose this guy.

          • John Garner says:

Oh crap! I hope this isn’t true. The kid could be — would be — awesome on D. That’s where we need his skills most.

          • Okie80 says:

John, not ESPINI just didn’t know the rules about commenting about another board on here.

          • John Garner says:

LOL. I don’t know the rules either. Just curious about the news outlet making the report. I’d be very disappointed if it proved true.

    • JB says:

Hale…not the best source for info most of the time.

    • John Garner says:

Just came from OUI. Didn’t see that.

  • Okie80 says:

    Wood, has character issues

    • Super K says:

I hope that’s not the case. Phenomenal athlete.

    • Boom says:

Okie80, be nice if you could elaborate. I have some inside too so just curious how you came up with this since this is not what I’ve heard.

    • John Garner says:

Why post this if you’re not going to explain? Or provide your source. I call BS on this. (Edit: Whoops! What Boom said. I wasn’t nice. My bad.)

  • Jordan Esco says:

    K just developed a man-crush like THAT!

    • Super K says:

To be honest, I had never paid him much mind. But in these past few days talking to folks in McAlester when they told me his measurables and said they used to play him as an overhang, I had a hard time believing it. So I watched his film and was like WHOAH! I believe.

      • Brian says:

Overhang as in a Geneo Grissom type role…?

        • Super K says:

Yeah but different alignment I gather in their defense so it requires more athleticism. Usually you’re gonna play a hybrid safety/LB there.

          • Randy says:

This what I have been wanting since MS came back and we went with the “3-4”. Was hoping Roberts would be this guy, or some one like Saltes.

          • Randy says:

Wood would be perfect as well, was hoping he would play on Defense.

          • Doobie74OU says:

Are we talking about something like the old “Roy Williams” spot. Cause that would be crazy in a good way!

      • Indy_sooner says:

Same boat here…my mouth dropped when I watched film for the first time today.. It not fair how the big man can move. I see the dilemma. I don’t understand why he didn’t have more offers than that

        • Bob Edwards says:

Happens a lot with small school athletes who they stick everywhere because they are the best athlete on the field. The sites don’t even know how to list them.
247 has him as a FB/TE, Rivals as an “athlete.” But a good bit of his Hudl film has him at QB. These are the kind that often get missed in the recruiting game. Its hard to rate him as FB/TB when the tape has him playing QB so the sites give him a three stars on measurables and then ignore him. Coaches don’t find him because they are looking for TE and so don’t have anything to rate him on.

          • Slim Sooner says:

Yes, and that makes us fortunate our coaches recognized his talent and got him for OU. Anxious to get confirmation he’s on campus and ready to go to work! Here’s hoping he will literally bring the Wood right on up to Norman!!

          • Indy_sooner says:

That’s a good assessment Bob. He’s just one if those guys that you love to have. Get him in and find a spot later. I see him lining up on offense.

      • Boom says:

This goes back to your exposure piece on OK preps. The locals knew but no one else. No camp invites or trainers in rural places. Great article on the OK preps as I came from Big Mac and now live in Houston and it’s night and day.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Looks like with the quality control coaches and such they have now they could hire someone to go through all the local high school teams film and look for hidden gems. They could not recruit directly but tell the coaching staff about them and they could recruit them.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

I think it’s a toss up between whether you like Pitch Perfect more or if K likes Dalton Wood more.

  • Boomer15 says:

Cialis or Viagra…whichever brings the wood. Kid is a physical freak.

  • ComancheJoe says:

After watching Dalton’s video, I would love for him to become a ” Jeremy Shockey” type of TE for us

  • BleedCrimson says:

    Loved watching this guy play!
    BOOMER!!!

    • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Asked Eas Tex on the Daily Board for one but he must still be asleep!! Thanks for fillin in for him. And yes loved watching him play. We need our “DEFENSE” to bring back that kind of fear that those guys did.

      • BleedCrimson says:

I do think that we are going to be much better this year on “D”. But, mostly depends on the young guys coming in. I would (hope)expect we may see some Youtube from EasTex later today. 🙂

  • ME says:

Is he a potential Tim Riggins – just not a college kid?

  • Bob Edwards says:

Wood is Blake Bell with an extra gear and a shorter turning radius.

    • Super K says:

On film I think he’s got much better feet, fluidity and plays lower without looking like a textbook ball player.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Kinda what I meant by shorter turning radius. He reminds me of Bell because of his size and versatility but he is quicker on his feet and faster. He’s the classic fail of the stars system. He is so versatile they played him everywhere and so he doesn’t really have a position to be evaluated at.

    • Boom says:

Wood is not stiff so he could offer more tangibles. My hope is he wants it like Bell.

      • If wood is not stiff, there is some medicine for that. You should talk to your doctor.

        • J J says:

          Zzzzing. Well played

          • EasTex says:

            Good to see you.
Was worried about you and your boys with all the flooding.

          • J J says:

Thank you friend! We are good, our neighborhood is an area evacuated, but we are on the bluff over the lake. I’ve actually been in NYC with the oldest. How have you been?

          • EasTex says:

            NYC?

and I thought I would share it, just because.

    • SavageSoonerEsq says:

I remember that! Awesome! It also reminds me how intimidating Travis Lewis was and how much of a shame it was that he was injured his senior year.

    • hOUligan says:

After Monty got to OU and went to the Poly camp in Utah I was really hopeful that OU could get a few more team mates for his haka. Flippin’ great stuff!!

  • SamSooner says:

In regards to Dalton Woods, we all know that Stoops isn’t going to turn his back on a kid.

    • Super Keith says:

For all of the crap the Stoops haters give out, they never acknowledge these kinds of things (which are really important). Even the seemingly small act of granting a full release to Ford and Hansen show prospective players that Stoops is a real player’s coach. He doesn’t just offer lip service when it comes to being “about the kids”. Then you see coaches like Kingsbury, and how all of that went down with Mayfield. That kind of stuff doesn’t go unnoticed by every recruit out there.

    • actual1 says:

Why not turn back on him ? Just a football player

  • #1¢WW2 says:

So we are Bringing the Wood again this year?

  • EasTex says:

    Love ya’ Super K.
With Dalton I have to disagree, I want to see him with the ball in his hands. Perhaps a compromise where he just stays on the field the entire time, old school style.

  • Seems like this guy would be an absolute freak at DE. He could stand up and fall back into coverage with his speed or just complete be a 1 man wrecking crew on slower OTs!

  • Randy says:

In this offense maybe.. But I would still like to see him on defense as a OLB (Edge, Overhang) guy. He would put himself and the OU Defense in a good position with future Edge type of players that are getting drafted early and often for Sunday’s.

  • OUzaudioman says:

Does anyone know if Dalton headed back to McAlester already!!!

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Clearly, a potential Gonk or perhaps Austin English at DE…but better. TE is the position, as long as he gets the ball.

    • John Garner says:

That’s the key: getting him the ball. Like Super K observed: too many skilled guys on O for Dalton to be properly used or, at least, enough. Besides, I don’t see him unseating Mark Andrews at TE. But what the hell do I know? If anyone can figure out how to use Dalton effectively on O I think it is LR. I just think he’s more dangerous on D.

    • kokevo says:

This has been known since early this morning. im not sure why some on here are acting as if he is still at ou.

      • Chris White says:

I couldn’t even read the article, last I heard was just above here that he was on campus. So only going off the title I hadn’t heard that he left

        • Jordan Esco says:

fwiw, there’s nothing behind the link of any real value. what’s in the tweet is all there is worth knowing (for now).

        • kokevo says:

I wasnt trying to sound dickish that’s my bad. Im just a little tired and upset with this whole situation I was looking forward to him smashing the competition next year and now it looks as though that wont be happening.

        • Slim Sooner says:

Maybe he just went home to get another load of his stuff. Dang, people must be watching him like a hawk. Who knows? Hope for the best is all we can do.

  • Jordan Esco says:

re: Wood – Just want to make it clear if there isn’t something official posted on this site it’s not b/c we’re unaware of what’s going on.

Personally, I’m just kind of over the situation as a whole. ABSOLUTELY nothing personal against the kid, but I’m just not gonna get caught up in the drama of what an 18-year old is trying to do or not do.

I’m not going to put words into the mouth of anyone else here, but I believe my fellow TFB compadres tend to agree.

So we’re probably not going to spend much time trying to chasing down this kid’s h.s. coach or his mom or whomever for the latest rumor in this particular situation.

If we get something tangible we feel is worth reporting and isn’t more of this ‘will he or won’t he’ type of stuff, then you’ll see it on the site. If we don’t have something like that, then you may not see us mention it. But again, it won’t be b/c we’re unaware of things like the tweet below or the rumor/”report” earlier today (also referenced below) that started this whole thing.

    • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Jordan totally agree. I will get my info from either his mouth or this site. TFB is my only trusted source.

      • Jordan Esco says:

Appreciate the trust in TFB, believe me. But just to be clear my comment above wasn’t intended to be a shot against anyone. I respect the fact others won’t take a similar approach to this and wouldn’t for a second begrudge them for doing so. And that goes for K or any of the other guys here. If they want to continue to pursue it, be my guest. I’m simply saying I don’t really want a part in it.

I hope the kid figures out what he wants to do and makes what he feels the best decision for himself. I got no skin in this game, obviously.

    • Cory Reedy says:

And this is exactly why I deleted my posts earlier. Pure speculation. Screw speculation.

      • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Amen!! It’s like my daddy always use to tell me. Don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.

    • hOUligan says:

Full agreement here, too. I want to spend time on the kids that are ‘there’ in Norman and want to be there. Whatever Dalton’s issues are, I hope he gets squared away wherever he ends up. Say a prayer for him and his family as you know they are going through this, too, and only want what’s best for their son.

    • ColoradoSooner says:

Much appreciated. Hope Dalton Wood is okay.

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

If the problem with Wood is a girl or his kid, I see where he is coming from. I turned down an opportunity to make a very good living playing music because I didn’t want to be away from my new wife. I do not regret the decision, but the money would have been nice…

      • hOUligan says:

Whatever is in front of you is what’s most important at the time. A good friend, Bally HS AA, had a Husker offer as an OL. Turned it down to go to the local DII college because didn’t want to leave his hs girlfriend. Did great. Tried Canadian ball, was a ‘strike player’ but didn’t catch on. Married the girl, has 3 great kids, started a couple of businesses and is doing fine. D1/Neb just was not to be his path.

        • ToatsMcGoats says:

I worked with a kid that had a similar story. Was All-State OL for Miami, Ok. Got all kinds of offers, but didn’t get one from OU. Was dead set on attending Texas Tech, but had to go the juco route first. Met a girl, dropped out of school. He married the girl (I sang at the wedding) and now they have a couple of kids and he’s happy as can be. Football is great, but it’s not everything.

          • hOUligan says:

Amen, brother. Sometimes there is so much more in store for us than we can see or imagine. Just have to trust.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Took me nine years to get through school because I did not want to spend four years away from my girl. Will have been married thirty-seven years this August. Haven’t ever regretted it. I got an amazing woman, raised a passel of kids and now she raises hummingbirds.

He is not. Sounds like the issues continue but hopefully this plays out with him fine, safe and enrolled.

      • Chas Taylor says:

Dang, do you know what the issues are?

      • John Garner says:

Wow, that’s disappointing to hear. Ditto on your sentiments Super K.

      • OohRah Mama says:

Prayers and support out to DW and his family. These are young kids after all. Sometime I believe we adults have forgotten what being all that young age entails. The emotions, the feeling that everything’s huge and forever. Without the life experience to temper all the overwhelming…everything.

I’m always amazed most at young’uns when I see young men and women straight out of high school running into combat, leading others from the front. Especially Marines. You see them emerge from the worst that fellow humans can throw at them, then they’ll turn around back at the base and hike up their shorts & tees and twerk like Miley, or slalom down a barracks staircase sitting in a toolbox lid, or confiscate someone’s bike and jump between building rooftops (occasionally losing a stripe or several layers of skin in the process).

Youth has enthusiasm, resilience and joy. But don’t y’all remember how much worse it felt when things went b*lls up? Dig up some slack and hand it to ’em, willya?

Could happen. Everybody wants this kid since his de-commit from aTm but OU seems to be trailing a lot of folks. Maybe a better shot at Cam Williams. Hoping to get Devernay.

      • Stephen says:

A lot of time left but you’re right, OU isn’t in the best spot but his recognition means a little. This is going to sound a little negative but I wasn’t impressed with Cam Williams too much, maybe a second look will fix that. Agree with you on Devernay 100%

      • OohRah Mama says:

I appreciate his appreciation, but seeing as we don’t show up in his Top 8 I’ll temper my excitement a bit. I always want to see the kids go where they’ll be happiest.

        If that’s OU, even better.

It could be a matter of being homesick and is not sure on what he wants to do. I remember the first time I was by myself in the military overseas for that matter and it was hard not having mamma their to take care of you, but I was able to stick it out and enjoyed my time. Let him have his time to get things straight and hope he joins the team soon.

    • ComancheJoe says:

I would agree with you if we were talking about a California kid. Dalton’s family is only a 2 hour drive east of Norman, he can go home every weekend if he wants. I think that there is probably something else going on here.

      • Hotrod33 says:

I knew a kid that went to school pretty much down the highway from his house and he even couldn’t stay at the school that long. Some kids are just like that. Dalton might have an issue but no one really knows what is going on but the coaches and family. I wish Dalton the best in whatever he chooses.
