We’re still several weeks out from the actual game, but I still wanted to offer up some of my initial thoughts on the match up. I will start by saying I haven’t seen a ton of Clemson this year. I’ve watched most, if not all, of their games with Florida State and North Carolina. Which, to be fair, I think are easily the two best games by which to judge Clemson on. The other being Notre Dame, of course, but the weather was such a factor in that game I’m just not entirely sure how much there is to be truly evaluated there.
With that said, here are a few of my initial thoughts.
– If anyone is still making comparisons to last year’s game in Orlando — other than the simple fact one team will still have an OU logo on their helmet and the other a tiger paw — just stop. Those comparisons are stupid.
Both of these teams are drastically different and will feature any number of players who were either somewhat limited in last year’s bowl game or didn’t play at all.
It’s the same two programs, not the same two teams.
– Not exactly breaking news here in proclaiming the big key/s from an OU defensive standpoint will be limiting both Deshaun Watson and Wayne Gallman for Clemson. Watson will be in NYC this weekend for a reason, and he’s exactly the type of dual-threat quarterback that has given Mike Stoops (and before him Brent Venables) defenses fits for years. Though to be fair, the same could be said for just about every other defense in the country when facing a talented, mobile QB.
As with any match up against a quarterback like Watson, discipline from OU’s front seven will be critical to their success. Maintaining leverage and your rush lanes to prevent creases for which Watson do run through could prove to be the difference in this game.
You may be less familiar with Gallman, but believe me when I tell you the kid is legit. He’s rushed for over 1,300 yards so far this season and is explosive with the ball in his hands. From what I have seen, Clemson will often get creative in moving him around pre-snap to find ways to get him the ball in space.
Tackling is a key in any game, but it will certainly be an added point of emphasis with both Watson and Gallman capable of making game-changing type plays out on the edge.
– While Watson will EASILY be the best overall quarterback OU has faced this season, he certainly won’t be the most dynamic passing threat this Sooners defense will have seen. Don’t get me wrong, Watson is more than capable as a passer. But he’s probably not someone that is just going to stand in the pocket and pick you apart.
Again, limited sample size, but from what I’ve seen Clemson really likes to run a lot of short, quick passes to their WRs and force you to come up and tackle to prevent yards-after-catch. They seem to take the occasional shot deep to keep the defense honest, but that doesn’t appear to be a fixture of their offense.
– #18, Jordan Leggett, will be a name to know and a guy to keep an eye on when Clemson is on offense. He’s a big flex TE, very similar to OU’s own Mark Andrews, who the Tigers have started to get more involved in their offense over the latter half of this season. Another guy they’ll move around quite a bit to try and exploit match-ups.
My assumption is Steven Parker will draw this assignment, on most downs, for which I firmly believe he’s more than capable. But the size mismatch between the two will definitely present a challenge for OU’s standout second-year player.
– From a Clemson defensive standpoint, it’s pretty much OU fans have become accustomed to seeing from a Brent Venables led squad. They’re going to be aggressive and try to force you into mistakes. But with the unique perspective of being so familiar with an opposing defensive coordinator, OU fans know better than anyone how that aggressiveness can make you vulnerable.
To that point, Clemson’s rush defense over their final six games has been highly suspect. Through those first seven games, Clemson’s defense allowed a respectable average of about 105 yards on the ground. Over these last six games, however, that number has jumped up to and average of 156 rushing yards allowed per game.
It’s one thing to give up nearly 200 rushing yards to Florida State and Dalvin Cook, it’s another entirely to allow Syracuse to put up 242 yards or South Carolina to gain 181.
Ed. Note – Sorry, I meant to include the following in the original and it slipped my mind before hitting ‘post.’
Now maybe that is a product of their defense wearing down over the course of Clemson playing for 10 consecutive weeks, all of which will be cured now with the layoff prior to the game in Miami. I can’t really say for certain.
What I can say for certain, however, is if this recent string of games is in fact an indicator for NYE, Samaje Perine & Joe Mixon will be more than happy to take exploit it.
– From what I can gather the primary concern from an OU offense vs. Clemson defense standpoint appears to be talented Tigers’ CB Mackensie Alexander. The match up between Alexander and Sterling Shepard should be something to watch.
OU fans certainly do not need to be reminded just how vital Shepard is to Oklahoma’s ability to move the ball successfully through the air, and Alexander has excelled this year in limiting opposing teams’ top wide receiver.
Clemson has proved to have no qualms moving Alexander around, even straight shadowing one guy if the situation dictates it. And one would have to presume, with OU’s continued emphasis when it comes to Shepard in the passing game, that will again be the case NYE night in Miami.
Now it’s also important to note that while Alexander has faced, and more often than not won the individual match up with, some talented wide receivers this season, few, if any, truly compare with that Shepard brings to the table.

That’s it for now. I know I’ll have some more thoughts in the coming weeks as the actual game gets closer, and I suspect the other TFB guys will have plenty to share as well. But for the time being, hopefully this will help to tide you over, at least a little bit.
Tackling will be the main key to the game. Limiting YAC and stopping Watson will win us the game.
I think the tackling overall since the Texas game is exponentially better. Have had a few slip ups but overall I would take them from a D- grade against Texas to a solid B+ since that time.
To improve tackling force players to watch Clemson’s first touchdown last year. Over and over and over. Reminded me a lot of Texas first touchdown in the Cotton bowl. So add that to the loop. Make Zach Sanchez stay an extra hour to watch.
Great notes. I want to take the time to watch their games against UNC and FSU here soon.
Have to agree on the Watson analysis: he’ll be good, but certainly not someone to pick us apart in the air.
Very excited for the Shepard vs Alexander match-up. One will come out of that looking like a stud.
I know it’s not always realistic to make comparisons like the one I’m about to make, but: with Syracuse and South Carolina putting up 242 and 181 yards on the ground respectively, you’d have to think this will be an area we can exploit with Perine and Mixon. We’ve been averaging 300 ypg on the ground since Texsa: no reason to stop now.
I see 156 yards/game and equate that to 200+ yards for OU.
You’d sure have to think so
I don’t believe that Clemson has faced a team that is as balanced and with so many weapons as we have…and I know they haven’t faced a defense as good as ours either.
The Sooners missed having to deal with Boykin but, facing Texas’s Jerad Heard proved to be a disaster. Hopefully OU has improved enough to limit Watson’s running game….
I hope so as well. This team’s ability to deal with Baylor spreading the ball both horizontally and vertically gives me confidence in their ability to slow down Clemson.
I also think we stopped Walsh pretty well in Stoolwater. 12 carries for 50 yards isn’t exactly stellar. And honestly I don’t think the Texas game was a problem with penetrating or playing the assignment most of the time it was just finishing the play and tackling. I remember a number of times our guys were in position to blow up the play and just didn’t wrap up. Credit to Heard but I think that this team took that loss and used it to motivate them to play even better.
I recall Byrd taking bad angles and missing tackles. Hence why Johnson and Parker are now playing that don’t happen as much. I think the concept is Clemson is the better team and from our past against said type QB’s has been an issue. I will say I fully expect the Sooners to run to the ball and hit if they get beat it won’t be because they laid down and quit and you can take that to the bank!
This game will not even be close!!! OU 52 Clamsen 24
I think our biggest asset for this game is that our coaches are so familiar with Venables, and have an offense that is capable of exploiting the weaknesses of the schemes he runs.
last year did not go well and we had more coaches familiar with venables.
That’s because we didn’t have the offense.
I’ll See South Carolina’s 181 yards rushing and raise it 81 more yards! = OU gets 262.
Like any game.. this one will be one or lost up front.. If our O Line opens some holes and Perine and Mixon can establish the run.. we are in good shape.. Same on the Defensive side of the ball.. if our D Line can create pressure and do what it did against Baylor.. We should be heading to Arizona for the Natty.. BOOMER!
Agree, SOONER!
I think one thing that has been a little overlooked…..well…at least under-appreciated is the depth of the DLine. They haven’t shown much in the way of getting worn down because they have so much depth and every one of OUr guys can really get through the line. I think that will help in keeping us from getting gashed by repeated runs. I think Clemson is a good team but I think the good guys come out on top in spectacular fashion.
The Sooners win or lose this game depending on the LoS. Something they have been winning on both sides of the ball of late. I think this game is decided in the 4th quarter when Samaje Perine takes over. Sooners win a well contested game with pressure up front on D and being able to grind out first downs in the second half. 38-27 OU
Agree…LOS (Tex)
Don’t forget the ‘kicking game’.
3 weeks to prepare. Time to work on blocking and unleash mixon.
We need someone other than Shepard to have a big game to take pressure off the run game.
Consistent help moving the chains. Create separation. No drops.
Ugh on the drops. Might as well throw in no penalties too 🙂
I was just writing. see it above 🙂
This team still hasn’t played their best game yet, which is kinda scary if you’re Clemson.(if they reach that new level)
I was just writing. see it above 🙂
No stupid penalties. Westbrook.. Brown.. Keep your cool. Wait until the 4th up 4 pocessions then clock em in the mouth.
If Sanchez stays on his feet, he’ll have at HUGE pic for us this game. And Ross has another momentum turning return early in the game.
Wow. I either really misjudged your desire to read/talk about this game and/or did a really shitty job writing.
You do your thang, Jordan. We the faniacs are just pacing ourselves.
Since none of us on this side of the computer are “really” writers as opposed the the TFB writers, its impossible for us to really answer the “shitty” question. IMHO, you guys are pretty awesome and have my full respect (on the content side of things), you will have to look deep within yourself to answer the fecal side of things. I enjoyed the article, agreed with the defensive problems Clemson may encounter. I think the Clemson QB is the real deal. I think MS’s biggest challenge is containing that guy. I know they have some pretty good skilled players but he is the catalyst. Shut him down, and their Offense will crumble. Establish OUr pass to open up some lanes for Mixon/Samaje…..game over. Personally, from a fan standpoint, as opposed to the technical side you dudes possess, I hope OUr D comes out swinging and fighting like they did at Baylor. Take all the finess and fight out of their offense. Bloody their noses early in the game, and don’t let them wipe up the mess.
I appreciate your work. It takes my “mature” brain a little bit to consider all your salient notions.
I just didn’t like the font you used. 🙂
I really didn’t care for the font or the back 😉
It was well written Jordan. Great points but think everyone wants BOOMS lol, plus this game will be looked at broken down a million times, but I am glad I read this cause gave me some names to look up and some notes to write down,
Why in the world would you ever think people here are shy and wouldn’t tell you if something sucked? Very good read Jordan.
I’m I missing something here? Context?
I’m not sure but I’m thinking he thought there was no interest because of a lower level number of comments. I’m getting here way late.
I liked what you wrote and appreciate that you wrote it.
There are many things about this game that could easily weigh in our favor, not the least of which is I don’t think they will have faced anyone with the one two punch of Mixon and Perine. Unless OU is getting killed a the los, this will work out well–even if it’s break even at the los, i think.
How the passes to “other guys” go early will make a big difference. When Baxter catches that first swing pass, things work out much better than when he doesn’t. And if Westbrook can make a few, Clemson will be in trouble. I expect the usual solid performance from Neal. Totally agree about the fascinating matchup with Shep.
I thought it was a great read Jordan thanks
You covered everything I had in my kit bag, including that I haven’t really watched Clemson a lot. It still comes down to: their D appears to sag late (long season or lack of depth) and can Alexander cover Shep. Running at them early to get Venebles into bringing the LB’s and may a corner now and then, and dropping off short passes for TACs. Don’t get too greedy on the passing; balance and short passes with YAC because Brent will want to rattle Mayfield if he can. On D, contain Watson and make him toss it to us. No game breaking runs, although I expect they’ll break a few long ones; 10-15 yarders.
I think a couple of advantages will show up late for OU. First, our D-line is deep enough to play at a high level for 4 quarters. Second, our 1-2 punch at RB will ensure we are still running hard when their talented but thin D-line gasses. Clemson is tough. I think these are the two best teams in the country. If they jump on us early it could be a long night. If OU matches them from the 1st whistle, I think we clean up in the 4th quarter.
Live in Clemson country and have a decent idea of the game they bring. You hit it on the nose here with most of this. The most glaring weakness team wise is depth on defense for them. They tire late in games and it has worsened as the year has gone on. They will have rest for this one, but IMO it is paramount that we stick to the run game early and often, even if we don’t have early success. Perine and mixon could put a hurt in them later if we can keep them on the field a lot.
Like the way you’re thinking.
I feel a little over confident as a fan. With the way we dominated down the stretch it’s our to objectively picture any other outcome than us winning. Nightmare scenario is we can’t get the run game going and/or Baker makes some bonehead mistakes. Neither has really happened in 7 games.
We have to look out for Artavis Scott. If your open field tackling isn’t spectacular he will make you look dumb! (Sorry if this was already mentioned below)
I don’t know anything about this player, other than he has some big offers. My interest in him is his name. It’s not often a football player has a name that just exemplifies what he was born to do. Which ever team lands this young man will undoubtedly be better for signing him, as his name alone should put fear in the hearts of the opposing team. http://247sports.com/Player/Eddie-McDoom-63308
I think being 5’7″ has doomed him. Sorry, couldn’t resist. Some people won’t get that. To lazy to click.
ESPiN has Knight transferring. Just saw it.
Best of luck to TK9. Wish an outstanding young man nothing but the best.
May be a simple question and I likely missed it somewhere else, but with T. Knight being granted a release from his scholarship and transferring, and seeing that he’s set to
graduate this month and will immediately be eligible at his new school, does this mean that C. Thomas is the backup QB for the Orange Bowl? Or does Knight still remain on the squad until the playoff (run hopefully) is over? [Knocking on wood that Mayfield doesn’t get hurt, but just in case]
Trevor is no longer a Sooner.
He’s always a Sooner…
I would think that, since the OB is during the break, he would still be eligible to play at OU unless he enrolls at another school. However, I have no idea whether the coaches would let him or he would want to. If he doesn’t then CT is the back up and either Reece Clark or Connor McGinnis is #3.
I really think Thomas was going to get the #2 call anyway from here out.
We’re a better team plain and simple. we gotta come in nasty and make them pay.
As far as open field tackling goes, it’s all about getting numbers to the ball. We need to swarm their playmakers.
Best of luck TK9!

Our defense is more disciplined this year, and too many disruptive players to allow Watson to take over the game. That combined with our potent offense, especially the run game, opens up too much for the Clemson defense to handle. I expect both Riley and M Stoops to have excellent game plans ready to go. As for T Knight, I posed the transfer possibility a week ago, and most everyone thought I was the village idiot. I’m a forgiving person, so you are all forgiven.
Are you suggesting that the village idiot can’t be right sometimes? 🙂 Just kidding…Good call!
I prefer the village idiot role, low expectations, then bam! 🙂
Being right doesn’t necessarily predispose you from still being the village idiot. Hope this helps. 8>)
Edit: music beat me to it. I guess I’m not the only smart ass around here.
It is critical that we keep the 4 qtr mindset going into this. Just like Tennessee… Falling behind early, even by multiple touchdowns means little. It seems like depth on the Clemson side is an issue and a legitimate place to gain an advantage. I’m also looking at several receivers not names Shep to break out. (Looking at you, Quick). Be crisp and execute regardless of the score, this one is going to be more mental
Deshaun Watson won the Davey O’Brien award tonight as the nation’s best QB. No offense to Deshaun, he is an awesome QB, but I wouldn’t trade him for Baker.
At this point I think we should play baker at safety in this game. Let him answer the question himself.
Trevor Knight granted FULL RELEASE by Coach Stoops!!
http://newsok.com/oklahoma-football-trevor-knight-granted-full-release-per-soonerscoop.com-report/article/5466016
Bad form for TK to do so at this time. IMHO One play away from coming off of the bench.
Blake Bell showed more loyalty. It’s ALL about the TEAM.
That said, I wish him well.
I wish him well, but certainly wish he would have waited until after the playoffs. This does put the team in a tough spot should BM get nicked.
If he is transferring, he will need to be on campus at new school for the spring to get into their program and learn an offense. That means he will need to be there over the holiday season.
I guess it depends on when the winter semester begins. Many schools don’t start until mid-January, so perhaps there may have been time for him to finish the season before beginning classes at his new school.

Was thinking, maybe this is part of the reason Knight decided to transfer out as well?
no. I think Knight is a humble young man who has gone out of his way to not be a distraction this year. If I had one year left to play competitive football, I wouldn’t want to be holding the clipboard. All the best to him, he gave us everything he had.
Nice Post. First I must say this season has exceeded any of our wildest expectations thus far. So proud to be a sooner and wish I had been more optimistic from the start. Apologize to stoops for my lack of faith.
I have a linebacker theory re: Clemson game. Think of the two games where we faced the most athletic LBs (texas with Malik J, and Tennessee). The games were earlier in the season of course but I think fast/ athletic LBs can contain Mayfield and limit his yards scrambling (go see replays). Clemson has fast athletic LBs. OSU, Baylor, TCU do not. Baker is shorter, doesn’t always see the middle of the field well. He won’t be able to hang onto the ball like he habitually does and will need quick/ crisp throws to beat Clemson.
Also, we tend to start slow in games. Baker needs a series or two to feel things out, he is better near the end when opponents fatigue and his sandlot style creates breakdowns. Clemson doesn’t have a deep defense but they might stop us early. Their offense never puts together a complete 4 quarters and will let us back in it at some point. They are also turnover prone. Dabo and Venables are class acts but I hope we crush them
Yes, we MUST stay loyal to the run game to wear them down.
Seen some mock drafts with Clemson’s safety going in the first round. Kid is apparently 6’5 210. Could match up on Andrews. DeDe Westbrook is gonna have to be huge in this game if Alexander shadows Shephard
Mixon
Neal
AP
You implied that Alexander might not have covered anyone as good as Shepard. Ummmm, if you check Youtube, you will find out that Alexander COVERED Shepard last year and COMPLETELY SHUT HIM DOWN.
Question has been answered.
Same with Perine last year. Shut down.
Shep was still suffering from a severe groin injury and was used as an ill-fated decoy in that game.
Perine wasn’t shut down.He had 134 rushing yards with a 5.8 yard average with a long run of 25 yards. He also had 63 net rushing yards in the first half and a 22 yard run in the 3rd quarter, so with that, most of his 134 rushing yards DID occur against Clemson’s first string defense. And he did that despite being in the backfield with a QB that had a rating of ONE POINT FOUR in that game.
You really don’t want to debate against me, I will flat out own you and I say that with all due disrespect. Now go find the nearest highway and do society a favor.
It’s probably been discussed, but I just rewatched the ACC CCG breakdown and I have to say, my biggest concern has to be our offensive line vs BV and his blitz-happy tendencies. Baker was sacked way to much this year, however, he was able to prevail. I just think this defense has done incredible speed and is sound.
I do think Baker will burn them a few times on said blitzes.
Anyone else as anxious as I am for this game!?
Alright, pretty good analysis….Yes, if we can stop Gallman, then we are off to a real chance at winning the game. The other person to stop is Leggett, their TE. If we stop those two we win, period. Watson, yea, he’s going to get some yards on the ground no matter what we do. His passing sucks and is limited to hitting Leggett and those little crap screens that get broken for long yards. But I’m telling you, if we stop Gallman and Leggett, that will be enough. That’s where all their momentum on offense comes from. And as long as our offense has a decent game, we’ll be taking another Orange Bowl! OU baby!
i think it is due time for Quick to have a 6-catch, 100 yard game. Couldn’t come at a better time. I’ve been waiting. Maybe he’s just been saving it for now. And please, for the love of God, give Andrews some opportunities to make some plays. I would really love to see us do these things in the passing game.
Many people have been complaining about our draw, but after thinking about it for a long time, I really like how we are set up here. Orange Bowl, hello? This is our bowl. I don’t care who we are playing, we will show up and fight in this game. Better than Bama in Dallas. I’d rather have Bama after they play Sparty, and I think our offense will play better in the title game, if we get there, with less of a gap between games. We may start slow vs. Clemson.
