Open Post | Monday, Dec. 21st (UPDATE 9:50 am)

Sooners Preparing for Clemson: The Sooners practiced again yesterday in preparation for their playoff match-up with Clemson. They will practice today and tomorrow as well, then allowed some time off for the holiday and resume practice right after Christmas, in Miami.

We know you’re always interested in information from practices, so we reached out to a couple sources to see what we could find. And, unfortunately, we were told there really just isn’t much of note at the moment. As you would expect, there is a level of bowl preparation for this game that goes above and beyond normal game prep. I was told part of that is due to the magnitude of the game, the focus of the players, the energy, and organization of the new coaches.

Whereas in a normal bowl game prep a lot of the younger guys are given more reps in practices, in this case (unsurprisingly) it sounds like the practice reps haven’t changed all that much from the regular season.Guys like Khalil Haughton, AD Miller, PJ Mbanasor & Marquise Overton are starting to get more and more comfortable with the scheme and their technique. But again, this bowl practice isn’t to prep the young guys for the future.

The future is now, in the playoff, and the coaches are making sure the team is prepared for Clemson. They’ll have all spring and fall camp to get the younger guys ready for next year. – (Super K)

Parnell Motley: In case you missed it over the weekend, 2016 DB Parnell Motley (Washington D.C.) decommitted from Maryland. Which did not really come as a complete surprise, especially following Motley’s recent visit to Norman which, by all accounts, went very well.

We were told by one source that Motley actually considered committing on the spot during his recent visit, but wanted to first make sure he took care of his business with Maryland. We tried to reach Motley over the weekend but were unable to connect with him. However based on everything we’re hearing, he’s someone to keep an eye on in the coming days/weeks for a potential #boom. – (Super K & Brandon)

Clifford Chattman: I checked in with 2016 ATH/Safety & OU offer Clifford Chattman (New Orleans, LA), who recently decommitted from LSU. Chattman visited Oklahoma earlier this season and tells TFB that he remains “very high on Oklahoma.”

I asked Chattman what other schools, outside of Oklahoma, are standing out to him, to which he said Florida State and Memphis. Chattman said he is planning to visit both schools at some point next month. He also said there are no definitive plans right now regarding a decision date, but it sounds like that won’t come until at least after those January visits. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (9:50 am): 2016 CB & OU offer, Baylen Buchanan, announces he has decommitted from Louisville. At one point the Sooners were believed to be the school at the top of his list, even while still committed, and that could very well still be the case. However, will it come down to a first come-first served situation between he and Motley? Or would the OU staff accept commitments from both? I (Jordan) tend to believe it would be the latter.

It’s going to be a Boomrific end to the recruiting campaign! Beautiful!

    BOOMERRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I want that BOOM

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Is Motley being looked at a DB only, or is it a case of get him in here and then find a spot for him? I know he looks pretty good at WR. Thanks!

    • metzker says:

      We want him as DB.

    • Brian says:

DB all the way. I don’t think we’ll have trouble landing a couple more WRs. Still going hard after Velus Jones and Tyrie Cleveland. The JUCO WR Javon Wims sounds high on us and Audie Omotosho and Zach Farrar are solid Plan B guys.

    • Stephen Dale says:

another poster on Rivals asked the same question. He was told Motley was being recruited as an athlete. Not elite speed for WR or ‘shut down’ CB. Depending on his pass catching ability, he might be the slotback receiver OU needs unless V Jones commits……….

    • Indy_sooner says:

He’s definitely a DB. I see him as J.Thomas of two years ago. I was very high on Thomas so I see it as having elite quality depth. Of note, the kid’s got an LSU and MSU offer. If there are two colleges that know and churn out elite NFL grade DBs it’s those two.

  • Rick says:

Does anyone know if the Brainiacs have come up with a format they wish to use for the podcast, or is it still just in a “let’s talk about it mode”? Brandon sent out a tweet I think yesterday asking what we wanted in a podcast.

  • Boom says:

I’ve always wanted Chattman from the git go. Hope we can land him.

    • Stephen Dale says:

So, you want the coaches to risk a scholarship on a 185 lb OLB who may or may not grow into a 230 OLB and retain his quickness and speed ? that’s a big risk since some guys simply can’t add that much weight without losing speed / quickness…….

      • Boom says:

Yep. The key is, he can play multiple positions which is great in Mike’s defense.

      • Zack says:

Unfortunately chattman is a luxury type guy because you’re right it may take 3 years to make an impact. However with the depth we’ve created at LB we’re allowing younger guys to red shirt and that should help them get in the right kind of shape. We definitely don’t take him if Jefferson stays committed and/or we land burton. In a small class I don’t think you can take too many guys that don’t have a definitive position.

      • Charles Flood says:

The risk is well worth it in that situation imo, long athletic guy with speed off the edge.

      • crazyb says:

Worst case scenario (your favorite kind of scenario) we burn 1 scholly on him and it doesn’t work out. How many guys don’t pan out for us? Quite a few. You’ve gotta take some risks to get a good reward…

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Baylen Buchanan just decommitted from Louisville per his twitter

  • Jordan Esco says:

  • C.A. says:

All these de commits and where we stand with highly sought after recruits, business is BOOMin my friends business is BOOMin.

  • C.A. says:

Is anybody against Kyler Murray joining OU?

    • Kevin Burger says:

I don’t know. I’ve heard he has a bad personality reputation. But I heard the same thing from Tech fans about Mayfield.

    • cpearc00 says:

Tons of people on here are against it. They think he (and his father) will be a cancer to the team. Though I’m not a part of the group as I haven’t witnessed it.

      • C.A. says:

I also concur, I believe he is a wonderful talent but I just don’t like that his dad has so much input into everything.

    • Indy_sooner says:

*Against*? No. Anyone that wants to don the Crimson and cream is good in my books. But check the attitude at the door. Personally, I think Allen is much more elite and a better fit

      • C.A. says:

I agree I believe Allen would be more suited for us.

        • EasTex says:

I think Allen would be better suited for a bama/sparty/lsu type offense, not the Air Raid.

          • Indy_sooner says:

I see it as the converse, actually. He doesn’t need to be a true dual threat, just have adequate throws and some scrambling. I don’t even think we can call ours a true AR. Allen’s arm is a thing of beauty, and no, this is not all hype. He reminds me of Sam Bradford. Alot.

          • EasTex says:

I’m not referring to him being a DT, but to his heavy/slow feet. Watching him try and move when the pocket broke down was like watching a train wreck in slow motion.
He needs to be in a max protection pro-style offense and Riley isn’t going to change his offense, he is going to find the QB that fits his system best.

          • C.A. says:

            Totally agree here.

          • Indy_sooner says:

That part is true. It’s like watching a small Andrew Luck. But my counter to that is we also use our backs in blocking schemes alot more as well as in the WR game, somewhat negating the the negatives of a true pro style attack.

          • EasTex says:

There are many times that the QB needs to move in the pocket or just run for what he can get because of the coverage and/or the rush. He is not that guy, he’s a statue.

          • Indy_sooner says:

I have seen him run, the kid can move… but considering who his QB coach is, are you surprised? Pocket presence can be taught with a competent coach. Spavital just plain sucks

          • EasTex says:

I disagree, the kid is a statue. His offical sparq 40 in high school was 5.0 and I think he has gotten slower.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

I trust Bob, he is typically a good judge of character.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

      Yes.

    • Daniel Ruffo says:

I am. Would prefer Allen. Less drama.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Not against Kyler Murray, per se, but I don’t think it’s a particularly good fit.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      yes

      • C.A. says:

Being that your apart of the reason we’re allowed to come here and discuss things like this, I would love for you to elaborate.

        • Jordan Esco says:

Drama aside, I just don’t think he’s a great fit for what OU wants to do offensively.

Would much rather have Kyle Allen, personally.

    • EasTex says:

I’m opposed to either of the gAggie QBs transferring to OU. They had their chance to join the good guys and chose not to. I wish them well.

    • Zack says:

Not opposed. May have been a bad situation instead of him being a cancer. I would rather have Allen join the team.

      • Bill Holder says:

If one looks at what took place at aTm, you will see that Sumlin made promises he shouldn’t have made, the kid is a spoiled brat, and has a helicopter dad. Let them take the drama somewhere else. If KA wants to come here then fine. He saw what was happening and wanted no part of it.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

I would take Kyler Murray or Kyle Allen with open arms. I think either could be better than TK9

    • Johnny Greenlantern Otis says:

i think its more the drama and the deal with his dad that makes peeople not want any part of it. look how much of a issue he was this year

    • OUn8v says:

Is there a reason why we would need either one, in light of Riley having the 16 and 17 QBs in place and may be already looking at another for 18?

      • SoonerinLondon says:

        Depth.

See Baylor for an example. They got down to number four this year and were still competitive at three.

Look at our QB depth last year and this year. It’s clear we could have used a little help.

        • EasTex says:

Neither would be available until the 2017 season. If we need immediate depth take a JUCO.

        • OUn8v says:

Our QB situation last year, and for a few other years, were a result of a lack of quality recruiting. That has now changed. Riley was on Austin while still at ECU, from what I’ve read. A quality QB pickup each year seems to resolve any issue at depth, especially if we pick up a JUCO, if needed. Like ET said, neither of the aTm won’t be available next year.

        • blaster1371 says:

I wonder how the two walk-on freshmen are panning out?

      • JD says:

The only immediate reason to take one would be to allow Kendall to get more prep reps rather than having to run the scout team

    • Jason Vos says:

Kyle Allen yes, Kyler Murray hell no

    • SoonerinLondon says:

I think the conversation is moot because I expect Murray at Texsa.

I think there is a better chance of Allen ending up here, but still expect him to ultimately land at Houston.

    • DCinAZ says:

Don’t want him anywhere near our campus or our team.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

I wish you wouldn’t hold back and tell us what you really think. 🙂 /s

      • Brad Warren says:

        Ted Bundy?

      • BoomerDave says:

Too bad! it’s not your decision! You know nothing about the kid, yet you keep bashing him. So you saw him frustrated on TV once? Big deal! Saw Julian Wilson frustrated on the sidelines once too, and I didn’t see you wanting him kicked off campus. Saw Striker rant and curse throughout a video shown all over national tv, and you weren’t calling for him to be booted. The coaches know him from recruiting him last year. If they want him, I want him. Stoops isn’t known for bringing cancers into the program.

    • Dick Bump says:

I don’t know the young man personally and I don’t put too much faith in internet rumors. I’ll trust the coaches. They’ll have to live with him.

    • Boom says:

Sumlin and Stoops are close and I’m sure there have been conversations. I trust OU’s next move.

    • John Garner says:

I’m not against anything. I’m FOR what the coaches want. They know best.

    • Richard Gray says:

Rather have the allen kid if we take one the murray kid is short then he will have problems passing seeing over the oline

  • hOUligan says:

As far as Allen or Murry, myself, personally, do not see either as a good fit at this point and would rather go with the young men who want to be Sooners first, not the flavor of the month. BUT, the coaches know best.

  • Jason Vos says:

I think they take both just because they were already trying to get 1 more DB b4 the Marcus Green depature. So that opens up another DB spot, but then again they better hurry up and commit because I could see one of those Cali DB’s we cooled on after we got full at DB getting back into it.

And I still think OU is trying hard to flip Jared Mayden.

  • Jason Vos says:

I also think WR Quartney Davis is OU bound

  • Brian says:

I think we take Motley and Buchanan with Marcus Green gone…

  • JD says:

Are the coaches considering Motley at wr

    • Brian says:

Not really – Velus Jones, Quartney Davis, possibly Tyrie Cleveland, Audie Omotosho, Javon Wims…all are targets right now.

      • JD says:

Go check out his senior highlights. He is very smooth with the ball. Id give him a look on both sides plus special teams

      • Brien Brown says:

Not trying to under mind your statement. But, Velus and Tyrie are viewed as long shots. Davis seems to be a OSU lean and Omotisho and Wims we just have to hope we aren’t late to the party. Motley would be a great WR, I think he is someone that we get on campus and see and I think he could end up playing both sides he is that good.

  • OUn8v says:

I have used up my monthly data allowance on my home internet, so it’s like dialup if I try to watch a video. But these damn commercial videos here and elsewhere load up at the speed of light and never stutter while playing. smdh

  • blaster1371 says:

Still hoping for Southall. He and Daniels will make a kick ass pair of DTs. If numbers allow I would like OU to take another quality RB, unless they have some solid future candidates for the 2017 group. Brooks not getting it done in the classroom or whatever it was that got him suspended does not develop much confidence in his future availability.

    • Scott says:

Don’t forget about Mark Jackson , Striker 2.0

    • Brien Brown says:

By my understanding Southall is a silent. They won’t take another RB, next year they will take 2-3 I am guessing but Adams and Anderson from last year are quality backs. Plus Perine or Mixon will be back the following season if not both.

  • Doobie74OU says:

Question for Consideration and/or Your Thoughts? Say Oklahoma wins the next two games as we all believe them capable of doing. We are now National Champs and we were already kind of hot on the recruiting trail! Now the big question; Does Oklahoma have to reconsider their outstanding and current offers and maybe even our verbal committed to see who we real want/need? With the Championship doors will be open that maybe were not before. Players like EJ Price, Ed Oliver, maybe Jack Jones, Mique Juarz, McTelvin Agim, Rashard LawerenceI can’t think of right now

    • metzker says:

      Stoops aint saban

    • Fear The Magic says:

Easy. No we never withdraw an offer from a kid already committed. Thats for SEC schools. They commit and we commit.

      • Doobie74OU says:

What about offers? I agree we will not mess with kids already committed!

        • Fear The Magic says:

If we’re not full then sure why not make new and “better” offers. I dont see a problem with that at all.

      • Bill Holder says:

But, if they committ, and are still taking visits, are THEY really committed? In that case I don’t think we should guarantee them a spot .

        • Bob Edwards says:

No if the guy is taking other visits, then you aren’t obligated to have a scholly when he finally puts an end to the recruitment. You should be upfront with the kid when he does that and let him know we don’t consider him committed until he is finished with his trips and reiterated that he is committed. That does come with a risk though since the kid might bolt on you.

          • Cush Creekmont says:

In theory, I agree with you Bob. I do wonder if the world-famous term “silent commit” comes in here. If a player tells the coaches that they want to “see the other schools,” but are committed to OU, would the coaches hold that spot? I would think yes, but surprisingly they don’t tell ME their recruiting plans.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Well that’s where you have to assess the risk. You aren’t obligated to hold it, but you may because you think the risk is low he will go elsewhere or the potential benefit is worth the risk.

          • Cush Creekmont says:

Yes, the coaches should decide this. I am thinking of the poor kid that has never been anywhere – he has this one chance to visit some places free. At 17, I would’ve jumped on the chance to see some spots,

          • Bill Holder says:

Right, and Daniels is still going to take visits. I don’t know if any others are, but I can see how that would hamper recruiting when the coaches don’t really know.

        • Fear The Magic says:

I assumed he meant if that recruit has closed down future visits to other schools of course.

        • SoonerSpock says:

It has always been Stoops policy to not pressure kids into commiting. Bob want prospects to be mentally certain that they want to commit. Of course kids are kids and when they have been a fan of say Texas all their life and get a late offer from the whorns those commits can become just as fickle as half the girls you dated as a young man.

    • blaster1371 says:

The football fan in me says yes…. A lower ranked guy gets bumped for a highly ranked guy. But the principle of making “a deal” overrides that. I know recruits can pull their commitments but I am not sure it’s cool for a program to pull an offer just to go dance with the prettier girl

    • BoomerDave says:

It’s never been Bob’s MO to pull an offer from a committed player. That’s just not cool and I can never see him doing it. My gut tells me that they are only offering kids they really like and will be happy with those already committed. That’s not to say that it will improve the quality of the remaining spots. Also, will help tremendously with ’17 recruiting.

      • Doobie74OU says:

Wasn’t there a CB last year that was one of our earliest commits that everybody believed was talked in to reopening his recruitment by OU

        • Bob Edwards says:

I don’t remember if he was a CB but I remember the story. I never saw any reliable source confirm that story, just Internet rumors. I think it more likely we were honest about his prospects and he decided to go elsewhere. That would fit our coaching staff’s MO better.

      • JD says:

I believe we have offers out that are pending at the moment (and always have). I don’t see Bob pulling a verbal under normal circumstances but I see him not allowing a verbal until the end after we see how a few guys stand with us

    • Johnny Greenlantern Otis says:

it would look bad on ou going forward if they did that i think

    • Mr. Jones says:

If you’re only referring to offers and not players we already have committed, then I say of course! They’ve had their opportunity to commit. It’s not the coaches fault they waited too long.

    • Jpsooner23 says:

Stoops won’t pull the rug out from anyone. He’s a better man than that. I do think he may have some conversations if this scenario did present itself and if the young man found something they would mutually part ways. Only if the kid has another good option though and decides it’s right for him.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I think you can reconsider “offers”, but can’t reconsider “verbal commits” and pass the integrity test. I know other programs do that, or other forms of it (grey shirt), but Stoops is better than that.

      • Gary Robbins says:

Is it Clemson (?) who says once you commit that’s it. If you go visiting to other schools they will rescind your commit or something like that.

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

Not sure who said that. Don’t really like that policy if true.

        • SoonerSpock says:

I think quite a few schools follow that policy. Mack always tried that practice at Texas but occasionally a recruit would Mack’s hand and he would back off and accommodate them. Bob has just always tried not to pressure kids but wait instead until they are ready.

    • Bob Edwards says:

One of the things recruits usually like about our staff is their honesty. I think they are up front with guys about what’s required and what their chances are. I can see them giving an honest answer to a kid and helping him find an exit if he no longer wants to come here. I don’t see them kicking a kid to the curb just because someone better comes along.

Offers are a different thing, you offer a kid, give him a bit of time to decide and then move on. If he comes back later you still take him, if a scholly is available.

      • Brien Brown says:

Thanks Bob you said what I wanted to but rambled on about!

      • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

        It’s like dating.

      • SoonerSpock says:

I have followed recruiting very closely for the last 40 years and to my knowledge the only scholarships offers withdrawn by Stoops have been related to academic, off field issues and circumstances were there were multiple offers for a particular position and the first to commit got the scholarship.

Offering a scholarship and withdrawing it because of the opportunity to sign a higher ranked player is a common practice with most if not all the SEC schools. I am sure other schools commonly do the same thing but I have not first hand knowledge of such.

    • Brien Brown says:

E.J. Price is already considering us and someone we have an offer to, same with all the kids you named. Now they will take the kids that commit and they ain’t waiting on those to see how we do. I say that 1-2 of them say hey we want to go to OU we will find a way to make it work but we won’t pull offers from kids that have them this late. We will tell those kids the late ones hey we are full or we can make it work. Don’t jump on the train late. IMO we win a Natty only helps us in the next 2 classes which 2017 is off a to a pretty impressive start already.

  • soonermusic says:

the difference in reps for the younger guys might not sound like a big difference, but i’m pretty sure it’s huge. One of the huge advantages (in the past teams that get a bowl game earn is the chance to have many extra practices to both evaluate and upgrade the level of play of the younger guys. It sounds like the coaches remain “on a mission” here. Glad to hear it.

    • blaster1371 says:

It does have its benefits to give the younger guys reps. However, that has been the past practice and the results in the bowl game have usually been rather disappointing. I for one am really glad to see the coaching staff doing something different this year and hoping it translates into victory.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

What do we have in the way of CB’s on campus next year? Did I miss anybody, as of today?

Sanchez (if he doesn’t leave) – SR
    J. Thomas – JR
    PJ – SO
    Dakota Austin – SR
    Taylor – SR
    Jordan Parker – FR
    Cobb – FR

    • JD says:

Antoine Stevens is a corner I believe. He redshirted this year

    • Doobie74OU says:

      Will Johnson

      • JD says:

Two more years too…I think he came in with 3 to play

      • Brien Brown says:

Johnson is a nickleback though not a true corner any more!

        • Rick says:

That’s pretty confusing to me, is a nickleback another CB or is it a Safety. I’ve always thought of it as a Safety, but like I said, it’s confusing. I know there is some cross over skills there also.

          • Brien Brown says:

I always think of a NB as a Safety usually can tackle well and make some plays in coverage more like a more athletic LB in a Safety body lol, TBH confusing to me also.

          • Rick says:

Maybe K can explain the differences and desirable skill of the position some time. I remember Parker saying he liked to play there.

          • Boom says:

They are moving more CB’s with length into this position. Better cover guys which is overall better for the teams we face.

          • Bob Edwards says:

What you say is traditionally true. However, I think against spread/AR teams that put more WRs on the field they are starting to look for guys with better cover skills.

        • BleedCrimson says:

I think it is more of a situational thing. Against the Baylor’s, it is going to be a cover guy. Against a more traditional Pro-style, it will be more of a tackling safety. JMO

    • Fear The Magic says:

      Stephens ?

    • Rick says:

Sanchez tweeted something to the effect he was not looking at leaving early.

      • BoomerDave says:

I didn’t take it that way. I just thought he said he wasn’t thinking about it right now. More important things on his mind, i.e., Playoffs.

        • Tipman says:

Yeah, I took it as he’s not exploring the idea right now but definitely did not say hes staying for his senior year

        • Rick says:

This is the quote, “I’m focused on Clemson right now,” Sanchez said when asked about his upcoming decision. “Obviously I just wanted to see where I was at. I’m solely focused on Clemson.”

Asked if it’s difficult to stay focused on the game with such a big decision looming, Sanchez said, “This is the chance of a lifetime. The NFL’s not going nowhere.”

I suppose it could be taken several ways, and if he were proposed as a 1st rounder, he should probably go. Stoops preaches the stay in school if you are not a 1st rounder, finish your education, get drafted a round or two higher and perfect your craft. I think draft position this year is more of a concern than jumping at this point.

          • Fear The Magic says:

If Sanchez is a first rounder then I know absolutely nothing about football.

          • Rick says:

Sanchez is very respected nationally, I think we are much harder on him than someone not wearing crimson colored glasses. Most of the AA teams have him somewhere on their charts. My opinion is he is a high risk, potential high reward DB, with ball hawk skills, and is a little challenged athletically on the strength issue. I’m not making a case for his draft placement, simply giving my perception based on what people outside our family has to say about him.

          • SoonerinLondon says:

OU fans treat Sanchez (the future int. leader in the history of the program) the way the treat LJ (the winningest QB in the history of the program).

          • Fear The Magic says:

All Im saying is that Im 98% sure that he wont be a first round pick. Do you disagree?

          • SoonerinLondon says:

I have no idea how the NFL will grade him. I thought TJ was going to be drafted.

          • Brent says:

I don’t think it comes down to if he’s a 1st rounder or not. If his draft stock will not improve drastically with another year at OU (i.e. 5th rounder this year to 4th rounder next year) I think he leaves.

          • SoonerSpock says:

There is a lot of difference in pay for a 4th round draft choice and a 5th round draft choice. Average signing bonus for a 4th rounder is about $550,000 and about $175,000 for a 5th rounder. That is a cool $375,000. Also round 1-4 draftee generally have 2-4 years guaranteed and a 5th rounder only gets his signing bonus guaranteed. Their annual salaries except for rounds 3-7 are all the same NFL minimum for years 1, 2, 3 and 4 starting at $420,000 in year 1 for the 2104 draft and going up to $690,000 in year 4. First and second round draftees will get the $420,000 minimum for 2014 but years 2,3 and 4 will be much higher than the minimum.

If Sanchez thinks he can elevate his draft status from round 5 to round 4 it would financially behoove him to stay another year. He would get a much larger signing bonus and a larger guaranteed contract.

      • KJ1123 says:

I dont think he should leave early, I honestly think he needs another year.

    • Mike Bray II says:

Antoine Stephens. Which with the way our db recruiting is going as of late, I’m very interested to see the direction this kids journey at OU will take. Was listed at 6’2 187 coming out of hs. After working with ole Schmidty, is he possibly more reassurance at a FS/SS position when Byrd and Thomas leave? We’ll need depth there in a year or two, although I am aware of the great young even talent we seems to be bringing in. He’s got good size IMO..

      • Mike Bray II says:

Or do we think he may be a future transfer? Liked his cover skills in hs.. Seemed instinctual to my less-than top notch eyes.

  • KJ1123 says:

Pretty good read….recruits gotta understand the importance of hitting the books when chasing the dream.

  • Soonerfan24 says:

Any predictions on how OU closes out the class? I think most of the commits are the guys you’d think of, but I’m predicting one surprise. Here’s my list:

    Caleb Kelly
    Quartney Davis
    Tramonda Moore
    Amani Bledsoe
    Johncarlo Valentin
    Marcel Southall
    Baylen Buchanan
    Parnell Motley

    and the surprise
Kellen Diesch (escapes the crashing swag-copter at the 11th hour)

    • Scott says:

Swap Valentine for EJ Price , my surprise commit would be Tyrie Cleveland and Mique Juarez.

      • Brian says:

Unfortunately, I don’t think Valentin is happening. It seems like we weren’t a fit for him for whatever reason.

      • Drew says:

You know something about Mique Scott? 😉

        • Scott says:

Haha no , I do know him but a couple months ago I felt really good about our chances with him. Right now I’m not so sure but If OU win the Natty and generates more hype with the recruits , I personally think we land him. I can see OU maybe flipping some highly touted 4 star or 5 star recruits If we win this Natty.

    • Brien Brown says:

I agree with Kelly, Moore, Bledsoe, Southall, and Motley. Davis, Valentin, and Buchanan maybe, and Diesch I don’t think so, think we will take Price over him and basically would bet he would have to call the staff and ask if we wanted him, Price and Moore are the big boys on the OL that we want. I agree with Scott, Juarez, Cleveland, or Brandon Burton will be the surprise gets.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Thanks for the info. As always it’s much appreciated. I can’t wait for NYE at @ 3 PM

  • Rick says:

This time of year in the situation we’re in is exciting and a little frustating. Football winding down throught the playoffs and BB getting going.

    https://twitter.com/AP_Top25/status/679007327387807744

  • Jason Vos says:

This is probably how we finish

    Caleb Kelly (OU)
    Mique Juarez (OU, gut feeling)
    Quartney Davis (OU)
    Tramonda Moore (OU)
    Amani Bledsoe (OU)
    Marcel Southall (OU)
    Baylen Buchanan (OU)
    Parnell Motley (OU)
    Elysee Mbem-Bosse (Not OU)
    JohnCarlo Valentin (Not OU)
    Velus Jones (Not OU)

    Surprise recruit being Jared Mayden

    • Brien Brown says:

I hope you are right I really really like Kelly and Juarez and hope they both come. Davis would be great and I would say the surprise would be Cleveland, Juarez or Burton or even Price 1 of those 4 would be a great get for us.

      • soonerthunder says:

I really appreciate your updates. Thanks. Agree on clev, juarez burton, price. one of those would be great. two would be greatER, and 3 or 4 greatEST! It’ll be interesting. Think BS has done a much better job this yr himself than most yrs.

    • Zack says:

If you’re right about those that would put us at 22. We have 16 open right now. I think we take 20 at most.

      • Brien Brown says:

Where did you come up with 16? We have 14 on board if you include Ryan Parker so technically 13 commits?

        • Zack says:

          16 open scholarships.
12 seniors graduate. I’ve read several times that we only used 83 of our 85 this year. So 14 plus green and frison.

I think knight goes somewhere and I believe Sanchez goes. He might be a 5th round guy right now but is staying another year going to make him a 1st of 2nd? Probably not.
So I see us with 18 available. With stoops taking a chance over signing. Moore is rumored to be a grade risk and it appears Ryan Parker might be a grade risk.

The other thing to keep an eye on is the 3 who are suspended for the playoff because of grades, do they get it right in the spring? If not then that opens 3 more ships.

          • Brien Brown says:

Well put together Sir. I still think they take anywhere between 22-19 I have always felt that way. This is going be a great smaller class though regardless.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Other sites are estimating 20+ spots, so I think that is the approximate number (20).

          • Zack says:

If they can get 22 or more then you will see our ranking shoot up. Roberson, hardy and Jefferson are not rated very high. Outside of those 3 I think everyone on 247 is 88 + which is good.

Edit: 86 actually. Jefferson is 84, hardy 83 and Roberson is 78.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Grade loses in the spring probably won’t be in time for signing day. Still there are usually a couple of surprises during this time of year most are usually guys buried on the depth chart so they don’t get any pub.

          • Boom says:

My .02 on transfers as I think several will realize they won’t play. I could see at least 2 WR’s leaving.
            Secondary OL & WR 4 – 5

      • Brien Brown says:

Cause they did say at the begging of the year 18-19 we lost some kids in the Spring, added Baxter, Lumpkin and a Kicker but have since lost 3 more kids if I remember correctly and a possible 4th and 5th could leave!

    • Boom says:

I want Chattman on this list that says (OU)

  • Brien Brown says:

    My wish list of recruits.

Kelly (I think he is a silent)
Juarez (Long shot but with BY and possibly Ck on board it could happen)
Davis (We need this guy would be a great WR pick up)
Moore (Think he is an OU lean)
Bledsoe (Think he is another silent)
    Southall (Silent OU commit IMO)
    Buchanan (Done deal IMO)
    Motley (Another done deal IMO)
    Jones (Have fun in Cali)
Burton (Steal this kid from Cali, he could be great)
Price (Big battle for a big kid, we have a punchers chance)
Cleveland (Stoops and Co. could make a steal here, been saying it all along and staying true to it)

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

3 picks today for Baylen Buchanan to OU over at 247.

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

I just saw a thread over at 247 where James Hale says TFB never gives credit to him (OUInsider.com) as the originating source for breaking info. Butt hurt is flaming over there.

    • Brien Brown says:

Ask Jordan about not getting credit.

    • Zack says:

What has he broken in the last year? I’ve got no problem with him as far as he does ok on the radio but he’s too diverse to lead others in recruiting updates.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

I know. I’ve paid good money over the years to not get much info except for grandiose amounts of sunshine pumping, especially in recruiting. So, I’ve become jaded in the recruiting arena of late and will believe it when I see it on the field. I used to get so excited, but now I just have the “meh” attitude until I see the players on the field in real games. I blame JH for that.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, it’s important to consider that most of the guys signed in February won’t make a significant impact until around 2018 or 2019. That’s even if they make it to campus and do everything that’s asked of them.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

True enough. I like to be optimistic on each recruiting class, but there is so much that goes into forming the young men into successful student athletes that it has tempered my expectations accordingly. I admire the ones that stick it out and finally get rewarded with playing time. I root for them the most.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I would love to see all the young men succeed. I also hope that we are doing such a good job recruiting and developing the young men that the new ones have to wait their turns while the guys in front of them get their chance. Anytime you are depending on an incoming freshman to be the difference maker, you probably haven’t done a good job over the years prior to that.

      • BoomerDave says:

The thing I like about James is he actually has the recruits, their HS coaches and often their dads on his show. That way you get a feel for what kind of a kid he is from the perspective of his HS coach, and also can see how articulate the kid is. As we get closer to LOI signing, he often has one or 2 kids on his show everyday.

        • Jordan Esco says:

I agree with you and commend him for being the only person in this market to do stuff like this, but it also makes for turrible radio so….

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Agreed. But the most interesting interview he conducted was with Levi Draper and he asked the question if Levi held an offer from OU. Levi responded that he didn’t really know (uncertain) and less than 24 hrs went by and Mike Stoops made sure Levi knew he had an offer. I would call that a productive interview. And Levi was a very respectful young man and conducted himself admirably.

          • metzker says:

            Didn’t see the bobber move.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Swam right by it. That’s why they call it fishing instead of catching…

          • metzker says:

            lmao

          • BoomerDave says:

May be turrible to you, but not to me and tons of others of us who can’t get enough recruiting info.

        • soonerthunder says:

He used to be good. I’ve quit listening to him b/c he used to give a lot of recruiting info, but now he wants everyone to pay for it and gives out nothing on his radio show. So, his show has gone downhill and I’ve quit listening. I never pay for recruiting info either. I’ll get it some time without paying for it, and usually about as quickly as people who pay.

    • BoomerDave says:

Butt hurt flames over here as well.

  • OUhound says:

Sure would like to pick up Motley. From the vids I’ve seen, that guy can flat out play the game on either side of the ball.

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

BOOM!!!! Just picked up Parnell Motley

  • COSooner says:

    Motley. Boom.

  • Nate Broadus says:

I love getting the young guys reps. Yes, we’re playing for now. That said, at one point this season we were down to the 3rd & 4th string at CB — and you wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference to a large degree. When Sanchez went down, Dakota Austin played spectacularly; when Jordan Thomas went down, Marcus Green stepped up to the plate.

Those are just a few of the guys that were ready to step up whenever an injury occurred and we need that. You can’t just have bodies behind the starters. Championship teams have people ready to step up when their number is called.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:
