Sooners DE Charles Walker OUT vs. Clemson

Oklahoma defensive end/tackle, Charles Walker, announced via social media that he will not play in Thursday’s Orange Bowl against Clemson. This was subsequently confirmed by a number of other reports.
Again, according to multiple reports, Walker evidently suffered a concussion during practice earlier this week and will miss the game as a result.
The loss is a considerable one for the Sooners considering Walker has arguably been their most impactful and disruptive defensive lineman all year.
Walker has split time with Matt Dimon for most of the season, so one would expect the junior to receive an increased number of snaps in Walker’s absence. True freshman Marquise Overton and JUCO transfer Austin Roberts could also see some increased time. Redshirt sophomore D.J. Ward is also a possibility as well.

Yes high on the quality of our coaches and players.
Unfortunately the coaches don’t suit up and the backups are backups for a reason. Charles Walker is a big loss. Speed and explosiveness would have hurt Clemson. Best we can hope for w/ his backup is to “hold serve.”

Thats how I see this. Thats why we have depth. This could sting a little, but hopefully someone steps up and it stings a whole lot less.
We don’t have another Charles Walker. He is far and away, more so than Tapper, the most explosive interior DL we have. This is a huge loss.

Your frustration is certainly warranted; however, I am just thankful this wasn’t because of “missing curfew,” or anything non-football related. Injuries happen. The team will be prepared to make up for his loss. Dimon or someone else may have the most unreal, badass performance ever… Sometimes, something like this lends towards a greater performance from every one else.

He’s got a point though. When your opponent loses a key player, you attack that position until they prove they can stop you.

I said this on the other thread but I will say it again here since this is where it is being discussed.
Walker is a significant loss. However, the balance and depth of this team makes it less of a concern than many years. The depth at the DLine means that the drop off is not as bad as it could be and the balance means that, even if the D struggles, we still have an offense that can out score them.
I agree, I think between the depth, and cohesiveness of the defense, we’ll be better able to weather losing Walker this season than we would in most other seasons.
Wishing CW a full recovery. You know it is tearing him up not to be out there. Next guy just needs to step in and get it done.

Well guys, I was a little unsure before, but I guess now we have to win this game. It wouldn’t be right to let Walker miss all of the post season play after working so hard all season.

Not saying that he’s not important. But before we panic, we need to realize that, for whatever reason, the coaches started another guy over him in every game this year.
Rotations are key, especially on the lines. Somebody is going to have to play more minutes today which means fatigue. I’m curious to see what they come up with.

If it helps, I just read you as discussing the issues. It’s a negative situation hard to be 100% upbeat about it.
There are those of us who are trying to remain positive about the situation, posting things like next man up etc.- we realize the impact of losing the guy, it’s obvious.

Tapper has been playing pretty well all season. Leads the team in TFL, second in sacks.

LIke the report says he is far and away the most explosive interior guy we have. Dimon is a SR which is probably why he starts. Go back and watch the film- Walker is in on almost every play and has considerably more speed than any other interior DL.

I think he’s trying to say it hurts more than just some guy that is a backup and has no impact. Walker definitely has an impact.
Agreed about the impact, it is big; but he is trying to say more than that… He keeps rebutting everyone with “how bad this is.” Almost troll-like. We know its bad, but its not doom and freaking gloom like some are insinuating.

We have been super fortunate on the injury front this year, though. Probably one of the healthiest teams out there. If this is the worst we have to deal with, we’ll be just fine.

While I understand the concern about losing Walker let’s keep a couple of facts in mind. 1) He is listed as the “co” starter and according to OU’s participation stats he has never actually started a game.
Dimon, ward, roberts, overton, etc. Step up and shine.
Dimon started ALL games this year.

While not a starter, Walker was 3rd in sacks and TFL. It’s a hole, no doubt. Wonder if Orso was moved back to DE as he was 3rd behind Dimon and Walker.

Yep. There had been talk of him practicing at OT earlier. He might have been moved back if ever really ‘moved’ at all.
I wouldn’t expect an actual switch this late in the season. They may try him there in the spring though.

From all accounts, so do they. I remember a few years back, we had a lot of injuries, I think the addition of a nutritionist was probably a big part of the injuries going down.
She’s so tiny also… it’s hilarious to see her next to the big linemen.
Gymnasts are usually small, but incredibly powerful athletes. I would suppose she could hold her own.
That and coaches that teach better technique. I know the OLine injuries seem to have gone down alot under Bedenbaugh. Much less likely to get injured if your technique is right.
I’m sure she had a lot to do with it.
One thing I always notice about team photos like this, is that players aren’t segregated by position group. Everybody hangs with everybody. It’s cool.

Though he has not started I have felt walker has been the biggest disruptor on our dline he has been quick with his hands and doesn’t allow the offense to move him.. But I’m confident in anyone we bring in for him! Also I don’t know about the hit but sounds like they have at least been goin at it this week which is phenomenal to hear after looking back last year and people were saying this exact rging just wasn’t there! Sucks to hear this for the young man cuz you know he wants to be out there! And with the news of Boykin I am proud that our sooners look like its a team of high charcter guys.. Boomer sooner!!!

The Walker news is just as disruptive to Clemson’s game plan. Interesting the injury occurred on Monday, he surely had symptoms the last few days. We’ve prepared accordingly behind the scenes, and dropped the bomb on game day, gamesmanship playing in our favor.
I really feel for him. Thankfully he will make an apperance in the ship’. Dude has just had some troubles with injuries was hoping he was going to make it through this season injury free.

Just when it seemed we had made it through entire layoff injury/incident free, 5 hrs before kickoff this breaks! Definitely sucks bc he’s a force, but not like team just found out. We have depth there. Overton has gotten a good push at times. We’ll be fine.

Sucks to hear the news about Walker, but I have full confidence in the guys behind him to be able to replace him. We may not can replace him with one guy, but as a group the backups should do just fine(and yes I realize Walker was a backup all year). One thing I feel like is being overlooked here is the Shaw Lawson incident: the man came onto our team bus and started trash talking.. The team bus for goodness sakes!

Mcguire (not sure if that’s how he spells it), looked like he could barely put weight on his left foot. He should have thrown that ball away quicker. Their backup of him seems to be good at taking sacks.

Not to add fuel to the flames of panic, but even as a back-up Walker has more TFLs and sacks than either Dimon or Romar. I get the whole next-man-up thing, but some players can’t be replaced. I think Walker is one of them. I still have confidence in OUr boys, but to think another one of our DL can slide over and give us the same push in the middle is really underselling the freak-tastic play that is unique to Walker.

Because of Watson’s abilities the key to this game is more lane discipline than it is penetration. Having said that I don’t know which is the better DT as far as lane discipline.

As much as I like him, Jordan Phillips didn’t nearly get the push that Walker does. Phillips was 7 TFL for 2 sacks his last year.
I agree, this whole “but he wasn’t the starter” stuff doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. The kid just can’t be replaced or duplicated. Sure, we have guys that can step up but not to the level that Walker is capable of playing at. We’ll see how it goes….

I like Walker..a lot, but Dimon has had games where he played really well, as has Overton and some of the others. The DL is one of our deepest positions. It may be a factor, but I think I’ll still watch the game.

So if Houston ends up winning like 44-10 or something like that….does that add fuel to the fire to put them in Big 12? They remind me of TCU a few years ago, right before they got into big 12. I know, I know, about the “adding another tejas team…” but, there are not many quality options out there, and Houston may be the best up and comer of them all.

No, Houston adds very few TV sets to the television contract because between all the Texas school and the OU alums in the oil industry the Big12 already saturates the Houston market.

I hear that all the time but I don’t believe it to be true. I lived in Houston for 26 years. It’s mostly TAMU, some Texas but definitely not Big12 saturated. It’s becoming more and more SEC with TAMU and LSU.
How many television sets don’t have the channels that carry B12 games that would if Houston was added? It’s not about number of games watched, its about TV sets added to the ESPN, Fox Sports 1,etc.
I think the biggest issue is having yet another Texas school in the conference, adding to recruiting challenges.
I completely agree with you, but I did have another thought. Would we take Houston to keep them from another conference? Imagine if the PAC picked up Houston: they’d gain a huge foothold in Texas.
I can’t imagine the PAC wanting Houston. I think some people are seriously overestimating the value of Houston. They’ve had two top twenty five finishes since 1990.
To be clear, I don’t think they bring the B12 value. They don’t give us any more tv market, we’ve got Houston already, and I fully expect them to regress to the mean once Herman leaves. However, Houston would add sets to another conference (eg PAC), and the Power 5 affiliation would probably cause Herman to stay and allow them to pull a TCU. While certainly not desireable within the B12, my question pertains to if it would be even worse if they get snagged by someone else during the next round of expansion. If so, it might be better to add them to the Big 12 than allow someone else to grab them.
I think that’s called playing not to lose. But its an interesting thought. How about us picking up Cincinnati in order to gain a foothold in Ohio?

Everybody says next man up but it is a big loss. He might not start but we know who the better player is between him and Dimon is. 2nd on the team for tackles for losses and 3rd in sacks will hurt depth of the Dline. Out of the 3 to replace him, Overton is my choice.

it will hurt in 3rd and 4th quarter. I don’t know how Roberts can make an impact when he hasn’t played very much. Ward is Tapper’s backup. Q or Wade are the only ones that I can see playing.
Walker’s loss hurts but our backups would start for most other teams (Q and Wade).

Hahahahaha, lots of people think the same way you do… I didn’t like them moving DJ ward out there. He isn’t big or strong enough at the point of attack. I thought Q or wade would been better. At least they have the size to play the run. DJ is a 4-3 DE, in the 3-4 he really doesn’t have a position.
Sucks that we can’t be at full strength and as impactful as walker is, thank god it’s a position of depth now. Tapper is going to need to play like he did in November. Romar and dimon need to be at their best. I’m looking forward to seeing my boy wade get some time in the backfield though.

Hoping next year we have the ponies up front to run a true 4-2-5. Not sure we were necessarily out of place tonight. Looked like our staff wasn’t prepared for their adjustments. Didn’t help we couldn’t tackle to save our lives. I figured eventually we would load the box and force Watson to throw to beat us. Guess MS saw something I didn’t. Our young and inexperienced line showed up tonight. Alvarez and Samia both had rough games. Still think we abandoned the run to early.
With that said. Super proud of OUr boys. What a season!

Not an ounce… But we played scared and they took it to us on all the phases, with our bend but don’t break defensive game plan to our standing and watching them kick FG, punts, and whatever else they wanted to do on special teams..
