Good preview, but TCU and Baylor’s guys are much faster. The Rice game was kind of scary to watch. Coleman and Cannon and Co. were just running away from them like it was varsity vs. freshman squad. Yes, it was Rice, but damn those guys are fast.
Some ESPN guy had one of Tulsa’s receivers ranked 5th of draft eligible players. Don’t sleep on how good 2-3 of those TU receivers are.
I’m not. Not at all. I realize they are legit WRs. No doubt. But having watched both teams’ WRs, Baylor’s guys are legit burners.
I’d be more worried about Tech than TCU receivers at this point. Looked like TCU was a one man show in the WR category, Tech had a lot of burners!
I am not as worried for the Baylor team. The last couple years, we did well 1-2 quarters and the offense fizzles. I hope to open a can of whoop a** on both. Now WVU and Bevo, the drunk man has always impressed me

Trying blitzing, Mike. Seems to help with that “pressure” thing Parker is talking about.
My guess (or more accurately my hope) is that some degree Mike is holding back on some special blitz packages so that we can really bring it when we head to Baylor. Blitzing is great, but when the offense spreads you out and puts some guys into motion, it’s hard to disguise where the blitz is coming from. And if Baylor knows where it’s coming from, they can really make you pay.
We better hold NOTHING back this weekend!
Agreed. Time to take the top off the defense and get nasty.
Oh, for sure. I was just taking a shot a Mike, who seems to have lost the ability to blitz vs spread offenses. However, if you’re bringing more than they’re blocking with, you’re going to get good pressure and force a bad throw more often than not. There certainly are plays that can destroy you if you blitz and the offense has the right play called and it’s executed correctly. I just don’t want to see us sit back and picked apart b/c the QB has all day.
If they’re 5-wide, send 6 guys and press the WRs. Mess with the timing of the QB & WR while 1 blitzer is coming scott-free. Or show 6 at the line (and I mean 4 DL w/ 2 LBs standing in gaps at the line), and then 1 guy drops back at the snap.
If they’re 4-wide w/ a RB, send 6 but twist/stunt one side to create a little confusion.
Just try some kind of freakin blitz! That’s all I’m saying b/c this isn’t Tennessee circa 2014 w/ a bad O-line that we can get pressure on with just 4, maybe 5 guys.
Switzer, I believe it was, recently said that blitzing spread teams doesn’t work well, b/c the QB releases the ball so quickly that you can’t get to him in time. If executed well, the spread can only be slowed but not stopped.
so tell 3 guys to take 3-4 steps and jump while the others keep pushing to the QB. Keep the QB guessing. If he wants to make a quick snap throw b/c we’re blitzing, jump up and get in the damn way. Next time, he’ll have to at least consider the DL guys doing that before making that throw again.
Anything you can do to disrupt a QB’s timing and rhythm is good.
I believe the D-line has additional responsibility in the QB quick-drop scenarios (I’m not criticizing mike) and the DEs are the key …. along the lines you’re stating above, Jim. In a 4-2, non-blitz call, it would be advantageous to drop the DEs into the slant passing lanes while sending one LB and having the second LB follow the QB’s head. The job of the DEs is to either intercept if they can but at a minimum tip the ball into the air for an interception. If the QB does not throw in 2 steps send the DEs on a delayed rush. The goal would be to get inside the OC’s head ‘cuz a few balls up in the air for grabs would probably stress out the playcaller in the booth or on the sidelines. Now Mike has done some crazy fun stunts in the past such as drop the entire D-line save one into pass coverage. The problem is: if you don’t call this stuff in games enough, the D may have issues implementing these non-standard schemes/attacks when they’re needed. I believe we should be attacking offenses with most of our arsenal each and every week so the players can get used to them and maybe even ad-lib some to further mess with the QB/OC … my two cents.
But it’s always good to put a QB on his butt a couple of times to give him something else to think about it.
Exactly. The key is to be able to challenge the pass in coverage. Make a play on the ball.
How about simply having one the four d-line guys beat their men.
Oh how I’d live to believe that, but the Tulsa game is indicative of which way he’s going with that game plan.

I’m assuming the context here is with regards to playing at home.

Just because their Pass D appears to be strong, I hope that doesn’t mean we try to run it on them all day. We should throw the ball like we’ve done in other games to see just how good their DB’s are.
Yeah they need to be able to throw it around on first down
This offense has to throw to set up the run right now, so I definitely don’t see this being the case.
I like that Lincoln Riley never sacrifices offensive balance. We’ll see plenty of both.
I agree with Esco and Dave. I just hope they don’t try to test Joseph first.
here we go
Stoops opens by saying the bye week was good, and complimenting WVU on how well they’ve played thus far.
Plenty of WVU related stats at the ready
Stoops on WVU: Usually your better defenses have some experience.
Local media narrative this week appears to be Samaje Perine’s game last year against WVU
Classic Bob

…in a good way.

Stoops says that he generally doesn’t care when the bye weeks fall in their season.
What else could he say? :-0
He could say he’s not a fan of having to play their entire Big 12 schedule w/o an off week after having three such bye weeks just last year.
Usually Stoops uses Coach-speak so as not to clue in outsiders. In this case I think he is trying to keep those within the program from using the bad schedule as an excuse. Nobody plays hard when they think they have plenty of excuses for not winning.
I think Stoops’ teams always play better when they only have 1 by week. I am actually really, really stoked it came before conference play this year. Get us into a rhythm and take this league! Woooo!
already hobbled somewhat on oline with little depth, no more breaks, fingers crossed
Stoops tells Hoover that a win is the most important stat coming out of a game.
At the end of the day…
I hope Hoover wrote that down because that’s a keeper.
As he takes a sip of his drink. LOL! Classic Bob! Loved this response.
Gawd I hate Hoover.
That’s how a boss answers a question.

Stoops likes the direction the run game/offense is working, but up front about the inconsistencies they’ve experienced thus far as well.
Stoops says they have to do a better job of forcing turnovers as well as taking care of the ball themselves.
AMEN to that!
Kind of a Captain Obvious statement.
To say the least. But we can only work w/ the tools we’re provided 😉
lol, Bob just shut down a recruiting ?
https://twitter.com/ryaber/status/648545081725595648
A lot has been made over the size of his homes but he does a great job of using them for recruiting purposes. No clue if other college coaches do that or not.
Really? As in people have said bad stuff? That’s stupid. He gets paid $5 million dollars a year for a prestigious job at a prestigious institution. He should not have to apologize for having a large house (or houses).

We’re 12 minutes in and the media are already asking Bob about other games around the league. Have a feeling we won’t be here much longer today.
Stoops says the reason Alex Ross hasn’t had much success on kick returns is b/c of the 10 guys in front of him.
Well, its not like he forgot how to be fast in the offseason…
Being blind doesn’t help his cause either. Hence, his place on the RB depth chart
Not the most natural of runners to be sure. Great straight line runner, obv, but if that crease isn’t there the results typically aren’t either.
Even when the crease is there, he misses it at least half the time. He’s too much like Trent Richardson.
“All steam and no head.”
He probably won’t get the chance, but Ross needs the jet sweep and quick pitch kind of plays to be effective. Finding alternate holes is just not his game …
Id ammend that to say it probably has more to do with the 21 guys in front of him.
Or that there is not as much guidance. Having a gazillion returns called back because of bad blocking needs to stop too, that’s a huge elephant in the room… coincidence with Jay Boulware’s departure as the ST guy?
I believe he still is the ST guy.
Local media really, really, really like to ask questions about Charles Walker.
Can’t blame them. He’s the most frightening beast on television since Boris Karloff.
Actually really good ?, IMO. Hoover asked if there is a tendency to do things that worked in last year’s game again, or if you think they’ll expect something like that and try to maybe use that against them.
Stoops essentially said there is some of that, but obviously depends on the situation.
Great question in that it is interesting. But bad question in that there is no way Stoops would answer that honestly.
True, good point
He said, yes, they do some of that, and they also look at what they weren’t happy with last time and try to do that better at that. What’s not honest about that answer? He also said it’ll tend to be different because you scheme to what your guys can do best and the talent is different this year than last. Seemed simple and straightforward to me.

For his 1st game at the position, he looked good. Some communication issues all along the line, as JY pointed out. Might have found ‘a home’, I hope.
I think that’s awesome. For all that has been said regarding his lack of athleticism, if he can provide depth at three or four different offensive line positions then that is quite a commodity. Sometimes we don’t give Farniok his due because he didn’t turn into the Tackle that we wanted him to be.
I like him there. Big body and played with some nasty, I thought.
Dean-o asking Bob to explain the 3-3-5 to him
Stoops will probably tell him that lessons are extra.
I wish just once Coach would laugh and say “Seriously? Is that your question, man?
And who are Sam and Mike?
Doesn’t 4 come after 3 and before 5? 🙂
Al and Tramel not make it today?

Kicker fatigue? Give me a break.
not as odd as you might think, hip pointers come to mind…
Hip pointers are from getting hit. Hip flexor maybe. He’s a kicker Jezus.
fair point, i’m an ex-kicker and no fatigue was never an issue for me , then again i was FG guy not the punter
thankfully, that’s now a wrap
Well, that sure didn’t take long. What, lunch was getting cold?
If Holgerson says this is the best defense he’s coached in 20 years, that’s the most significant thing that I’ve heard. I don’t care whom they’ve played, when a coach says that, I pay attention. I think we’ll get a pretty good look at how Baker (and the rest of the offense) is against a serious defense this week. Tulsa has made our qb and offense look killer good three years and a row, this week may very well be the first major test.
I wish someone would ask stoops what our strategy is on punt returns . It seems like all our players just stand up on the snap and watch Sterling fair catch it .
Sometimes it looks like that because they are playing “punt safe,” and staying put to guard against a fake, rather than set up for a return.
Sometimes? I’m hoping that’s just another piece of the puzzle they played close to the vest early and hope even more that other coaches don’t expect us to do anything but play it safe to guard against the fake.
I think it’s more situational than anything else–down and distance, score, time of the game, position on the field. Not so much playing close to the vest. Maybe as the season wears on he’ll want to be more aggressive with it, but if he’s satisfied with the net result and is convinced that the offense can move the ball and score consistently, maybe he’ll continue to be conservative.
Have noticed the same myself and wondered why they just stand there and don’t even block.
The one thing we have to remember is that this secondary is still young and learning at the same time. We only have 3 Jr.’s and the rest are Fr. and So. Now I’m not saying they shouldn’t be playing well but you have to consider who is back there. We need them to be very experienced and seasoned now but just don’t have that luxury with this group. You can see potential with the group but also see the struggles with them We just have to take the good with the bad. Just hope they learned some valuable lessons in the Tulsa game.
