No doubt. I have noticed that ESPN has been throwing a little more respect towards OU as of late. Hell even Finebaum had OU in his final four on CFL yesterday. One of the most important developments for this offense to improve on last year IMO. (pretty obvious, I know)
They’ve said that several times in the past about the TE position in general. I’ll believe it when I see it, and I definitely hope to see it. Just like I’d like to see the FB used more in the run game actually carrying the ball. 5-ish carries a game to keep everyone honest. I was practically delirious when they used Rip in several short-yardage situations his Sr. year.
In fairness, Andrews has to execute all aspects of the game and he missed ALOT of those last year. He has to block, run routes properly, catch the ball. I think last year he struggled with those things (especially blocking) so they kept him limited to red zone. Assuming he has developed in those areas and will be a beast this year, but if he doesn’t they wont play him as much as we all want them to. JMHO.
Reasonable assessment. But I expect them to split him out more like Gresham, that flex position. Means they likely won’t expect him to be a Brody Eldridge road grater, but definitely he’ll be expected to block effectively as OU does with all of our receivers.
Regardless, as a fan, I am ready for a fully integrated TE and FB into ball-handling duties!
I’m wicha! He just needs to be more solid in open field blocking too. He whiffed a lot on the WR screens, etc.

Really hope Alvarez is a lot better at C than he was last year at LG, otherwise I would have been all for Wren getting the nod.
Agree, I think Wren should of gotten the nod. Alvarez got beat…ALOT last year and missed a ton of blocks. I’m not even exaggerating.
But if we trust Bedenbaugh then shouldn’t we believe he would put the best man for the job out there? Clearly Alvarez stepped up and was the better leader for the group

Hey I’m not fully disagreeing with you! I was pulling for Erick Wren and Alvarez at Guard but so far Bedenbaugh hasn’t steered us wrong since he started coaching here so I feel like I personally owe it to him to trust his decision
My only concern with trusting BB (don’t get me wrong, I do trust him) is this seems very similar to the St. John/Samia issue last year. We were 5 games in before that adjustment was made. Maybe Samia needed time to take it over, who knows.
Candidly, I’ve only told a few close friends this, but BB had alot to do with that loss. And to me it’s not just the St. John thing. There was absolutely no adjustments at all being made during that game. St. John was flat out telling Samia to get ready to go in because he wasn’t 100% and he told BB that, but still nothing changed. That was the only time I felt BB could of done a better job coaching. I feel sometimes he can be stubborn to a fault. But he changed things up and adjusted and things got better on the OL the rest of the year. I still have faith in BB of course, but I also think he’s still stubborn. And the leader of that group is not at the center position afaik.
100% agree. I don’t have near the knowledge and info you have, but Mikey takes 90% plus blame for that game and that St. John ordeal and lack of offensive production (particularly run game) was FAR more of an issue to me.
That’s the only beef I have in general with Stoops’ staff over the years. Always sound at making POST game adjustments to injuries/personal performance, but if something happens mid game to a starter we don’t answer well (in general).
LR said that after the Texas game they simplified the blocking schemes (went to a zone). So I don’t think the drastic improvement had much to do with personnel.
Having said that, why the hell didn’t they start the season with zone blocking given the fact that the OL was so young?
KJ since you’re in the know especially with the OL, is there anything to worry about with BB?

That’s understandable but that still turned out well lol reading JY’s posts the Center position has to be the leader and the most trustworthy. There were times when TY Darlington wasn’t our biggest most physical lineman but he was our best leader, same with Gabe Ikard. Alvarez has seen the field since he was a Freshman which means he’s earned his way onto the field

I dont remember him taking any snaps, maybe once if I remember correctly. Wren came in with the second team and played behind Ty.
Alvarez played (started I think) against TU. Pretty sure Ty was injured.

It was killing so I had to Google it, LOL! At OU he played mop up duty at Center in 2014 vs Louisiana Tech and in 2015 started at Center vs Tulsa. I am going to try and go back and watch Tulsa game today sometime.

I think to begin last year there was a battle for the RT job and they ended up starting St John and rotating Samia in but after a couple games it became obvious who the starter should be. Hope best guy plays up to his potential whoever it is, Center is a bad spot to have problems.
Mcnamara should have been what Andrews will be for the Sooners. I wish he would have worked out.

last year he seemed very relaxed and confidence going into the season. of course, we weren’t playing houston right off. he’s confidence, he always is, but regardless not playing houston last year, he’s not at all like he was at the beginning of the year last year. he was on edge more today and definitely no nonsense. i think he’s sending a message to his coaches that gets passed down to the players.

I don’t know about that. I have a lot of confidence in our defense. I just know that the O sometimes takes a bit to get going in the first game.
I think Houston is really really good. Top 2 or 3 teams we’ll face the entire year. If we come out as slow as we often do in our first game we easily could be down by 10 at halftime IMO.
Oh I agree that UH is a very very good football team. However being down by 10 at halftime is not something that OU cannot overcome (see Tennessee last year).
I think we play pretty well when our backs are against the wall. And if it weren’t for the injuries in Jan, that bowl game may have looked alot different.

I agree. Everybody seems to forget our RB was running on one leg, QB fought concussions down the stretch, and the defense was decimated in the 1st half. Until that run of bad luck we were beating a very good Clemson.
Watched the Tennessee game again last night ( 4th Qtr ), and was more impressed than when it was live. Westbrook made some key grabs. Gives me hope for our receiving Corp.
I think we fans tend to look at a team’s history and carry it through to succeeding years. But BS is right, every year it’s a different team! I don’t carry a teams history into the next season. However, the one constant has been the HC himself…perhaps that’s the reason for any trend.
Houston gave up 24 to tennessee tech in their opener last year, think we should be fine =)

Excellent job as always Jordan, always laugh my butt off when I read the presser.
Not much to take away from this one, other than some serious desperation on the part of the reporters to look for a “story line.” At this point, I usually look to see if Bob sounds extra excited about any player in particular and this time, while there was a repeat of the Westbrook praise that we’ve heard before, he seemed to hit a different gear when talking about Will Johnson. We all remember how quickly things turned around, for the defense, once they put him on the field, and it sounds like Bob is suggesting that he is the one to keep an eye on this year. Very nice.
