It’s Monday which means Bob Stoops will be holding his weekly press conference. And with it, we’ll be here to recap things as they happen. So feel free to follow along live or come back and get caught up later in the day.
Either way, we’ll be here for ya.
UPDATE: Video of Stoops’ presser below via Sooner Sports TV (link).

Is Dish Network going to carry the game? I can’t find it
Yes. I found it on the PPV sports pages, however I could not order it on my receiver or off mydish.com, I’m going to have to order it over the phone (which I had to do last year too).
Will be able to after Thursday
Dish 458 for $39.99 I think.
Yes, also on 469 (I thought I saw one was HD and one was SD, but I do not remember them saying they were broadcasting in HD).
Just talked to them and schedule will not be out until Thursday. Can’t purchase PPV until then.
It wasn’t there for ATT UVerse but now it is. And I’m $50 lighter. 🙂

o/u on idiotic ?s from Tramel completely unrelated to Saturday’s game?
I got 3
Why, I wonder, does OU tolerate the guy. Clearly he has an agenda, and it isn’t about supporting the program.
Tramel is a columnist, and a very good one at that. He’s not just a reporter. He looks for angles other than the same boring things that everyone else asks. I say definitely under.
lol
Tramel is a buffoon when it comes to writing sports articles.
2.5 o/u on trammel question
Stoops starts with comment in remembrance of Bob Barry Jr.
God, it still feels wrong to turn on Channel 4 and not see BBJ covering the sports.
no kidding…..bryan Brinkley is good…..channel 4 is thin on talent behind Brinkley, though…
Got it live on Fox Sports Central.
https://twitter.com/OU_Football/status/638396355971522560
AMEN to that!
Stoops: Team is as healthy as we’ve ever been coming into a year…Jordan Smallwood progressing well, only player hurt
That is simply great news. Injuries in the preseason are often due to random chance regardless of how well conditioned they are. With our team healthier then it has been in years we are still in a very good place to really surprise some folks with our talent and skill.
Perhaps we need to fire Schmitty. It is not normal to have everyone healthy to start the season.
Maybe it’s Coach Tiff making a difference!
We are in good health because……
I would triple like this if I could.

Who is kicking off?
see below
LOL thanks Jordan. Patience is virtue, but the season is close so all my patience is gone.
He was the top rated PK and second best punter in the nation. Not sure why you are surprised.
because it’s not something many guys do, even when they do excel at both. Let alone true freshmen.
I love hink our PK would be in good hands with Hodgson. Not so confident in,Steed as our punter.
sorta thought jack Steed might be the punter…..
Because he’s a true freshman and it is not common at all for one guy to handle both duties, let alone a first-year guy.
That is why I’m surprised.
Also he only made 13-20 field goals last year, not exactly NFL numbers.
http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/austin-seibert/T2ref_TuEeKZ5AAmVebBJg/default.htm
all kicking duties or fg/punt
Just fg/ punt.
quite an accomplishment………straight from the ‘cornfields’ to the big stage
He was the top kicking recruit nationally, last year.
All throughout the fall the consensus seemed to be he had the leg and all he needed to develop was more consistency.
Hopefully, this means his accuracy has improved. An accurate kicker with a 60+ yard range is deadly.
Yeah, I think I remember watching a vid off his twitter, booting a 65 yard field goal from the grass, big leg.

Nick Hodgson will continue to kick off.
Well, since I whiffed on TK getting the nod, I’d better get my “told ya so” in on this one…:-) (at least as far as the field goal part)
Bob is asked for his read on this team….and the media (Al Eschbach here) is in mid-season form w/ their pointless, stupid questions.
Stoops says Jordan Evans & Dom Alexander will be the starting LBs for Akron game (no shock here, tho).
Also says Frank Shannon will play plenty, again no surprise.
Stoops on Joe Mixon: Joe’s had a great camp … But Samaje (Perine) is pretty special…no one has removed Samaje from being the top guy.

He forgot to mention whether or not he took JY’s advice.
In Coach Bedenboom We Trust
There may be some growing pains to start out, however, I don’t have a doubt in my mind that Bedenbaugh will have a strong line sooner — pun, no pun, your choice –, rather than later.

I’m ready to see DeBerry bring the WOOD!!!
Going to be playing quite a few true freshmen this year I’d imagine.
https://twitter.com/OU_Football/status/638398966627979264
Can’t wait to see Baxter. I have a feeling he will be the sleeper in this receiving corps.
Again no mention of Quick.
As I’m sure you’ve heard, he has struggled some this spring/summer.
I’ve actually heard they may be looking to move to CB.
Farniok to cb ? .. wow ,, head slap and down he goes ?
sorry couldn’t resist
finally a physical corner
Also, no mention of Farniok at OL.
He was listed in the WRs that Bob said would play. The above answer is to the question of who would either start or be in first as subs.
Agreed.
What does Baxter bring to the table? Possession type? Run after catch? vertical?
Stoops speaking very highly of Ogbonnia Okoronkwo.
Also mentions Devante Bond & Matt Dimon.
He just likes saying the name since he finally learned how to pronounce it.
Stole the words out of my hand. Well played.
i’d be proud if i could say it too
“He’s been terribly excited to get out there.” – Stoops on Joe Mixon
They can play at the same time and there’s plenty for both of them to do. – Stoops on Perine & Mixon
Want to see this…… NOW!!!!!
Jenni Carlson working the ‘columnist’ angle, shoutout to BoomerDave
Perhaps it’s just me, but I do appreciate the role of the columnist that write 150-200 columns a year to look for fresh material including human interest type stories. Let reporters report the facts and stats. I prefer the columnists giving their opinions which in turn, promote discussion,
Stoops on how much of the offense they will show: “We’ve always been a little bit guarded…not to show your hand.”
Bob really likes Que Overton.
Stoops mentions almost every DL on the roster when discussing the rotation heading into the season.
I like it. Quality depth and rotating fresh guys.
He went three deep only.
Genetic SHORTcoming.
The way we’ll play (on offense), we’ll just a lot of guys. – Stoops

Clay Horning is the new Kuzy
It’s a shame not too many people get the refrence anymore.
Just makes it better for those of us that do 🙂
Stoops says the offensive coaches are really excited about what Mark Andrews brings to this offense.
So am I.
Me three
Good. I want to see him dragging some more DB’s.
OU has needed a money TE in the red zone for years.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpbbuaIA3Ds
Heh. I used to have this tape in quadraphonic sound in my car! The cash register noises at the beginning bounced from one speaker to another LOL.
me, too…..hope he gets a lot of passes thrown his way…..
He is going to be a big time weapon for this team. The fact he was a WR for years should do wonders for his route running. M.A. has all the makings of an A.A. and this system should only highlight his God-given abilities. Thank goodness the TE is back at OU!
No Hoover today….interesting.
That is a very good thing!
Maybe they swept Hoover under the rug
Suctioned Hoover? LOL
And hopefully emptied the bag in the trash where it belongs after vacuuming.
Hmm, who was that at the end asking about whether the staff and everything felt “fresh?” I thought it sounded like Hoover…
Another quality query from the local media.
Stoops on Mayfield: I anticipate butterflies. He wouldn’t be human if he didn’t have them.
What will be interesting if he is not present for any of the pressers. Hoover, that is.
He will show up if for no other reason than to dig at stoops.
Baker just can not try and do too much. Go through the reads dump it off, or take off or throw it out of bounds.
Jenni Carlson won’t let it go: she has an agenda to push with Joe Mixon.
What is she asking? Can only imagine what her next column will be about!
How is Joe handling things being back with the team following his suspension. How are Joe and Perine getting along?
Gotcha, thanks.
A. She’s a woman. They enjoy the drama
B. She’s a turd. Turds love to cause a stink
C. All of the above
C!!!
seems harsh…
The truth usually is.
Oh well…
D) shes useless unless she is pissing off staffs
Currently rehashing the story of Mayfield coming to OU, in case you’ve been living under a rock and never heard it prior to today.
Ugh, and we have our first Sugar Bowl reference.
Did we win?
The Sugar Bowl makes it’s appearance….LOL!
How far into the PC did it take?
25 mins., a new record. Thought for a second it had retired.
I left quite an impression at the sugar bowl 🙂
NOLA says “Git off my floor woman!” ?
???? no bourbon for you!
Don’t think anybody at OU is happy with a ten team league
I’m not at OU, but I sure am!
https://twitter.com/ryaber/status/638402654272638976
I am now of the thinking this has bed discussed a lot amongst the brass. Very interesting.
Bob is right.
I agree.
I had the sense that this was in the context of folks ranking the conferences, and was one of the reasons he didn’t put much or any stock in those rankings.
I don’t recall a time when Bob Stoops said anything like that.
“Big 12 is naturally at a disadvantage as a 10 team conference.” ( is that the quote?)
1st Boren.. now Stoops. Interesting.
Yes. Jordan posted about it below.
It was in specific reference to folks ranking conferences, saying those with more teams had more chances to have teams ranked higher. He also said he didn’t place much or any stock in the whole concept.
He’s just telling the truth. Several schools don’t want to split their money with an additional two teams.
https://twitter.com/OU_Football/status/638402617148768256
Someone asked him if it was getting “mundane” being at the same school for so many years, and if he had trouble getting fired up for it. That would be the day Bob quits unless I’m completely wrong about coach Stoops! Bored is not what comes to mind when watching him do the job he loves.,
Deano with a stellar question.
Stoops on Lampkin: Last I understood, they (Texas) haven’t released him, but they have not denied his admission (to school).
Wow! That’s interesting. Thought his admission denial was automatic. Sounds like they are jacking with the kid. Lampkin needs to get back on Twitter and bash Texas coaches I to submission.
Didn’t someone say Texas was going to wait until the NCAA forced them to release him, basically holding out as long as possible?
I seem to recall because I remember thinking, “Damn — what a prick move.”
From what I read a week or so ago, Strong was planning to take this all the way thru NCAA process, intimating that Lampkin did all this on purpose because he changed his mind about being at Texas. So, yeah, I bet this goes on for some time, unless Texas decides to release him.
I hope OU has already developed a plan of action with its attorneys. It seems to me, from what I’ve read, that this decision is not Strong’s to make The LEI is automatically void once the student is denied admission.
Once he is denied. But as Jordan alluded, he hasnt been denied. And, Strong said something about the “intent of the kid.” Whereas he was saying that if the intent of the kid was to get out of LOI, then he is not “automatically released” just because of a denied admission. Basically Strong has appeal options based on the intent of the kid.
They’ll have a heck of a time discerning intent, though. That’s tantamount to reading tea leaves. They need to let him go and move on.
Yessir.
Good freakin luck trying to prove intent in an 18 y/o….about anything.
Interesting how Strong knows the kids intent. The problem may be from an NCAA perspective. Will they require Texas to prove Lampkin’s intent or will they require Lampkin to prove he did not try to “not qualify for admission”.
Kind of like when Strong changed his mind when he told Lampkin that his DL coach wasnt leaving for Florida….
With Charley’s history of dismissing kids that are “undesireable” You’d think that seeing as Lampkin clearly wants no part of going to Texas that Charley would be more than happy to let him go to elsewhere.
Charley’s actions are clearly hypocritical IMO.
I ve always said String was full of crap. he made a big push & scene about kicking off kids that werent even eligible, had other issues just to cover his butt for medocrity, Newsflash if you are gonna get kicked out of school, you really cant play. And for such a “discplinarian”, they sure have a crap ton of false starts & presnap penalties. Since when is that the sign of a disciplinarian of a coach?
Apparently, UT has the “authority” but not the obligation to rescind letters of admission if a player has failed to meet admission requirements. In other words, Texas can claim they are “holding” a spot for Lampkin indefinitely until he satisfies his language requirements. I would not be surprised if that is what Strong has discussed with the enrollment officials, although it seems to me that any contact between a football coach and enrollment office is a bit ethically questionable.
re: Mixon – YES!!!.gif
https://twitter.com/OU_Football/status/638403457788039168
Excellent!
shocked that Westbrook was not the immediate answer there. I still think that’s the guy who will be back there
Or Baxter.
Hmm, no Westbrook.
Westbrook is a smaller guy plus he’ll be busy making long exciting plays on offense.
Yeah but I liked Saunders returning punts. Speed.
I don’t think Mixon hurts for speed, lol. I understand what you’re saying though.
You are correct.
I think the thing that helps Joe get the job is his combo of size and speed. Fast guys are great but many times on PR you need to break one tackle to make the “big play.” Mix is built like a SBH and should be able to run thru many-a-arm tackle which has to intrigue Stoops and Co. Joe seems to be rare mix of speed and power and I think it’s a natural fit for him to be back there. Plus he did it in HS so it’s not like he’s a greeny back there. Haven’t looked forward to a guys debut like this in some time. Probably DeMarco.
Plus we are deep at the position. But still, nobody quite like Mixon. Might be better/safer to put one of the other backs back there. One thing is for sure, it’s not for Sterling.
I liked Brown. He did a very good job.
very much so
no way that Westbrook is smaller than Shepard or Sanchez though
it might be due to him missing practice for his daughter. he may have missed out on the competition, Hopefully they will give him a look as the year goes along unless Mixon just tears it up.
Which may very well happen. I would bet money on him being a good kick returner, and maybe our next great one.
If everything that has been said about Mixon rings true, he is ideal for a punt returner. Big time burst, agile, can cut on a dime, and on and on.
I was sure it was going to be Westbrook
may, possibly………..will be very disappointed if we have another yr of fair catches and playing it safe
During the broadcast Toby and Chad discussed the intentional downplay of Mixon by Stoops, so his performance did his talking for him. He called him a “natural” as a returner.
I’ll be slightly surprised if either Shep or Zack are returning punts much, if at all. He’s got better options and he seems to know it.
Stoops says he has never once denied a player seeking a transfer.
https://twitter.com/Davis_Spenser/status/638403702450065408
Well Bob, welcome to the world of coaches that have their best interests at heart rather than the kids best interest.
Symptom of extreme butthurt
I think that’s an incorrect summary of what Stoops said. He said he likes coach Strong, and wasn’t going to criticize he or any other coaches for the decisions they make about transfers. He said he wasn’t the poster boy or spokesmen for giving releases because he understood many reasons why they might not do it because it was unfair for instance for players to commit and the team possibly turn other people away only to have that person then ask to leave. He said it had happened to him with running backs. And then Bob said that for all he knew he might just block someone’s transfer next year or something so he wasn’t going to complain.
I think it’s a fair assessment of the situation vis-a-vis the university, but you are correct about the coach.
No excuse for the ut to not formally deny his admission a week after classes started there. This is no longer a coach issue, but a university issue.
Seems to me the university and Strong are working together. By the university not providing Lampkin an acceptance denial his NLI is still in effect. This allows Texas or OU to the NCAA for a ruling. In either circumstance Lampkin will lose his eligibility for 2015 and if Texas were to win their position that Lampkin intentionally did not become eligible by completing the online courses Texas also reduces his eligibility to 3 years.
Texas knew the likelihood of Da’Vonta completing 3 online Spanish courses during the summer was slight at best. Lampkin’s decision not to not bust his backside to become eligible is not on Lampkin. Texas knew his academic circumstances when they made the scholarship offer.
Also said, to be fair, that he might in the future though. lol (though I highly doubt it.)
That he fully understands why coaches dont release them.
https://twitter.com/OU_Football/status/638404094407798784
Not redshirting Anderson is very interesting.
Seems pretty silly, IMO.
I agree. With the talent thats available, why not.
especially when you look at a guy like Mixon who, if he is what we hope he is, won’t be around 4 years
Which is why I think they want Anderson getting some PT asap. That way when Mix and Perine leave, we could legitimately have a junior or senior tailback with good experience in Anderson.
If you are correct it is very likely we will both Samaji and Mixon after 2016 season. We definitely need to continue filling the RB well.
Maybe the kid prefers not to redshirt. It’s not like OU has trouble recruiting good RB’s.
Insert DWhaley discussion:
They must want him to get some touches before Whaley gets here. 🙂
Maybe they told him if he was good enough to play, they would let him play. And, if he is that good, maybe he is only here three years, whether you play him or not
hopefully he’ll get enough field time the season won’t be considered a waste……..
Anymore we’re recruiting backs that are on fixed time. If Mixon lives up to his hype, he and Perine are likely gone in 2 years. Anderson may be talented enough to play and wants to get out there and play.
If he wasn’t physically and mentally ready to go, they would redshirt him. We know he’s not lacking physically. My God, the dude is jacked.
If he’s better than Ross and brooks then why redshirt? I can see him doing more with 8 rushes than Ross can. I want Ross to get the ball on swing passes not rushes.
The issue is whether there are enough touches for 4 backs to make it worthwhile for him to burn his redshirt. Obviously the coaches think it’s worthwhile.
I would think there’s 6-8 runs per game (that Ross had last year) that I would rather flowers to have had so I would take Anderson this year. I just think it’s a matter of Anderson being better than people thought just like samaje.
It must mean they feel he’s ready now to play. I’m not one to ever second guess coaches who are around these guys every day. I’ll trust they more than likely know more than us on who should/shouldn’t red shirt.
Of course, but I am allowed to be surprised by it and ponder the ramifications.
Nope.
I’m going to tell my mommy on you. LOL
Maybe they know something we don’t about a certain running back that may be committing soon and are not in the slightest worried about future depth. Besides, we have RBs galore!
Stoops mentioned during the presser that all of the backs would play and get lots of touches.
The prime of a running back is a lot shorter than others. I’ve noticed the trend of not redshirting backs and attribute it to just that.
not really. Who is the last RB to redshirt? The handfuls that left the program (Johnson/Calhoun/the one who threw a fit & quit in 11) Otherwise, the only one I can think of is DeMarco because of turf toe. Cale (i know not there now) has always played them early.
Ross red shirted his freshman year. Brooks too but it was because he was rehabbing an injury he got in HS track.
Ross played his freshman year, he decked a defender on the sideline & got a huge penalty. That’s why he redshirted. He was a bonehead who was rewarded by a mythical injury… Did Brooks stay?
Looks a lot like a 4×100 relay team.
Not Mixon. Murray was injured not once, but TWICE on kickoffs….Use Anderson.
Thank God. Durron Neal was a big fail at returning kicks
Brooks reminds me of a faster Roy Finch. He and Ross back there retuning kicks will be sick.
Stoops says ‘Big O’ (Orlando Brown) was one of the most pleasant surprises of fall camp.
We’re asking Bob about getting to watch his kids play h.s. ball now.
https://twitter.com/ryaber/status/638404792147156993
that’s a wrap
Thanks for the coverage…
Next weeks will be more interesting.
Thanks Jordan!
Don’t see how Joe Mixon doesn’t get Heisman consideration if he is returning kicks and punts as well as running and catching the ball
man, tap the brakes……..lol
No kidding. I’ll be happy if Mixon contributes in a positive way this first season for him. If anyone needs the Heisman talk right now, its solely Perine.
In Jason’s defense though, the last 2 non qbs or running backs to win were Howard and Woodson right? Both were returners right?
Perine broke the single-game rushing record and didn’t get an invite——it’ll take Mixon excelling in all three R’s (rushing, receiving and returning) just to get a whiff.
Because the idiots across the nation argued that Perine ran against “Big 12 defenses.”
Well…
I’d say that was pretty status quo for a Stoops PC.
Seems to be having a harder time with names though. But I am too at this age.
Forgive me if it’s been addressed before, but weren’t there 10 or so players who violated team rules over the summer? Have they been announced and are any serving suspensions for the Akron game? Thanks
10 is alot man. Only one I know of is Frison
Was KJ Youngs dismissal also attributable to this sitch?
Separate issue. Frison has admitted it was an issue of his own doing, KJ straight up got the boot which is usually an extreme disciplinary issue.
Good ? Hopefully it’s already been addressed and nothing further will come from it. Surely Bob would’ve mentioned any suspensions today.
Is it just me or does there seem to be a different feel to this team? A lot of young blood playing and it appears things aren’t being done “same old same old.” I love seeing the infusion of young talent and playing the best player regardless of age/tenure. I’m not ready to call my shot on a NT or anything but I do think we are in for one fun season. The offense should be borderline scary but as always I think it comes down to the D. I can live with giving up yards and whatnot so long as we are getting TO’s in bunches. If you can turn the other team over more times than not you are going to end up with a good result. Bottom line is I love the attitude and feeling this team seems to have and am really hoping all of this good stuff pours onto the field. Let’s kick this dang thing off already! Boomer…
I think it’s just that time of year. Last year we were worse than this, IMO, b/c we had a coach even who thought we had a chance to be in the playoffs. Every yr I feel pretty good, but I think I feel better about this team than last year, and think we are a much better team than last year’s.
If Riley can correct OU’s 3 and out ratio over last year (#102). The change in field position and rest for the defense should give much better field position and reduce points allowed significantly. Also traditionally the Air Raid is more of a ball control offense than most passing games and with our running game time of possession should further reduce scoring opportunies for our opponents.
Whose ready to watch this guy?
https://youtu.be/OMwfde3r_KI?t=3m25s
Oh my LAWD! Mixon looks like he could be an AA safety and/or CB if he wanted to be. Kind of like Demarco Murray. Just sick moves and talent!
I’ve been looking for the depth chart he spoke of during the broadcast. He said he gave it to his secretary this morning, but I haven’t seen it on the net anywhere. He basically said who was where depending on the package, but did say it would be out.
Reading a bit between the lines: Listening closely to the way Bob phrased his comments and the exact way he expressed himself, it sounded like Mayfield’s experience in the system, and the resulting understanding of it, was the decider and that TK continues to improve in that department.
That’s how I heard it.
Is the defense still pattern matching?
New (I believe new) hype vid on sooner sports.. Pretty nice. I am ready !!
http://www.soonersports.com/mediaPortal/player.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=31000?DB_OEM_ID=31000
Haven’t been this excited about a season in many years. Maybe because there are so many question marks but also so many potentially awesome answers.
Stoops mentioned Riley liked that Baker goes through his progressions and makes reads, which is something that has me excited about seeing him at QB. Most QBs, even at the College level struggle with that.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CNxvVMMVAAAjKQk.jpg
