Bob Stoops will meet with the media today (Wednesday) for the first time since Bedlam. I’d expect a number of topics to be addressed, or at least asked about. I don’t expect Bob will be much in the mood for discussing the disappointment that was the 2014 season. Rather, I’d expect he tries to keep the focus on the bowl game, Clemson, and how to build off that for next year. Oh, and I’ll go out on a limb and say there might be a question or twenty asked about facing his old friend, Brent Venables.
As always, we’ll be here to cover it for you live as things happen.

Stoops name-dropping the AT&T CEO to open, nice
Stoops says they didn’t throw it very well in Bedlam and got beat in coverage a couple times that really hurt them.
Stoops continues to fall on his own sword w/ the decision to re-punt
Anything short of saying “Yeah, I’m a complete dumbass for punting again” simply isn’t good enough for me. Call me harsh, but that’s just my opinion. I mean, who else’s fault would it be than the head coach?
Stoops feels positive about what they’re doing in recruiting
In a good way?
always
Stoops says Knight has looked good & felt good in/during/after practices
Stoops says Geneo Grissom will not play in the bowl game.
Now the obligatory compliments for Clemson
Stoops also said Sterling Shepard is still a question for the bowl game
Rest the kid. Let Bell have a career day on his way out
Stoops reiterates that every one besides Grissom, and possibly Shepard, s/b available for the bowl game. But obviously that depends on how guys progress in the next 10-12 days
This means Grissom has already been ruled out?
Never mind, just saw the other update. Thanks.
correct

This worries me. Makes me think he won’t be playing so we’ll have to rely on CT.

kid was so excited at the his prospects before the yr and it all went way south…
Stoops says Venables is doing a lot of the same things at Clemson that he did at OU
so our offense will run wild all over them ? 🙂
Probably, because Venables has his way, a clear vision of what his defense will do and be. M. Stoops, however, does not… hey-o! #jokes
HE does! Sell out to stop the run, play zone and soft coverage against the pass and hope like hell they can’t complete one which they will do at will down the middle of the field. This is followed by banging of the head against the wall, wondering what went wrong, then saying, “I need more DBs in there” to play even more zone.
That is a pretty clear vision!!!
Pass. His run defense was always pretty good but his pass defense sucked. If we can throw the ball, we have a fighting chance. But knowing this staff, we’ll probably try to run it 90 times and throw maybe 5 or 6 times. That’s what we do, we play to the other team’s offensive and defensive strengths so they can more easily exploit our weaknesses.
Stoops says this Clemson defense is “maybe the best” they’ve ever faced.
I can’t help but feel that’s somewhat lip service for his buddy. I know they’ve No. 1 in the country, but to say they’re the best they’ve ever faced…c’mon
They’re the best against East coast offenses, I agree not the best ever faced.
Finally got to see the presser. Not that it matters, but the question (and answer) was clearly just about defenses faced this season.
I didn’t watch the presser, I was replying to Jordan who was relaying what he was listening to or watching. If you have a problem with what he stated was said, you could take that up with him.
Didn’t mean to sound like I was criticizing your comment. Just trying to give some context since I figured you hadn’t seen it. You’re right, of course…
It’s all good, the only context I had was what he was putting out there.
TCU hands down, every level they had a difference maker
So this means that Venables is or isn’t coming back to OU? (clasps hands and whispers “please don’t let him come back.”)
His initials say it all
It is complete crap. And we’ve faced much tougher defenses in his time, like LSU, Alabama, Florida State, Kansas State (in previous years), Nebraska, Texas, USC…
He’s probably trying to prep everyone for when we lose game #5 in embarrassing fashion…again
There will be 150 stories written in the next 12 days about Bob coaching against Venables. Enjoy those.
You can’t make me…
nope. Not gonna happen on my watch. I am done with such stories.
… followed by 150 stories about Venables coaching against Bob …
The story I’m most interested in is how Venables defenses looked so bad his last few years in Norman yet now he’s somehow coaching the #1 defense in America.
And here comes Tramel lobbing a Kuzy asking Bob what he things about Pelini getting the YSU job. Who cares you moron!
They should just give him prepared questions.
Why doesn’t someone from this site attend the press conference to ask the questions you are wanting?
I’m not sure who is allowed to go or how they determine who can ask questions.
Trammel is a jackass
10 days without access and that’s all he’s got. Tramel is awesome.
Tram has the personality of a sloth…..
Stoops says he feels all three JUCO guys they signed this morning can come in and contribute early.
Again, ground breaking type stuff here.
Isn’t that WHY you recruit JUCO?
In theory, but this staff has had a number of JUCO busts. Who was the big DT that signed with UT out of high school, that we picked up out of JUCO that played like 5 snaps?
Quincy russell… He was supposed to be the savior to the defense.
Tramel needs to be put out to pasture
No kidding
Imagine how bad he’d look were it not for Jenni Carlson.
https://twitter.com/Jordan_Esco/status/545282478873653248
Someone should ask if he has a short list for new assistants.:-)
He’d never answer it of course, but at least have the f’ing balls to ask

Stoops says he doesn’t feel as though DGB has made a decision yet re: going pro
Stoops says other than Derrick Woods, there is no news (yet) regarding guys no longer being w/ the program
Also said they have granted David Smith a waiver should he decide to transfer, as most expect he will (re: that Mayfield IG post)
classy move
I’d expect nothing less from Bob.
What would he do if Smith wanted to transfer to TTU?
I say let him go, then tell KK that’s how you do it!
And now Tramel is asking about Tyreek Hill, smh. Didn’t Gundy just have a presser recently? Does he know where he’s at right now? Has senility officially set in?
Next he will probably ask Bob how he feels about the talk of oil drilling next to Lake Hefner.
The gist of the last five minutes – Bob expects his players to stay out of trouble.
Great, thanks for the update fellas.

Daily reports? always thought weekly would be more apt
Stoops just keeps saying “we’ll see” to questions regarding Mixon. Whether he’ll be allowed back on the team, whether he’ll practice in the spring, etc.
I’ll bet that was a big topic in the “day long” meeting with Boren. He is probably concerned about the media out cry comparing it to the Hill situation.
I think it’s more about not saying yes until he actually does everything he is expected to do. And he may be trying to take some steam out of the story.
I don’t think they should worry about image from that decision. Look at lsu, tech and fsu with all their assault type issues and their incompetence.
Wasn’t his suspension supposed to end on Jan. 1?
I thought he could rejoin the team once the season has ended which would be the 29th?
I don’t think they were very clear. They said suspended for the season but didn’t say that meant he was back as soon as the bowl game is done. I would think if they were going to send him packing they would have done so already.
I think Bob stands by him and I think everything was cool, but the Hill situation had to make Boren nervous. I expect them to just keep a low key and slip him into spring practice.
you are making sense again Ray….
To me it’s not fair to compare the 2 incidents. Some believe it’s a “termination” worthy offense regardless. But I bet those people still watch the NFL after they’ve made a mockery of themselves. And no one calls out other schools for not throwing the book at the kids involved in these situations they just say “well their idiots” and move on. But because it’s ou, it’s something to whine about as far as the osu slanted media types.
Like I said it’s not fair to compare the situations but if hill’s incident is true in detail it is far worse because they may miscarry that child.
Has anyone asked about his red cup yet? groundbreaking questions..lol
Stoops: my guys “are not just commodities to me…I have a hard time just casting them away.”
Which is why you don’t hire friends and family.
Those friends helped bring us our only championship under Bob.
That was 14 years ago, so are the friends getting it done now?
So having “friends” on the staff has both worked and not worked. How do you think hiring non-friends will go?
So far the only 2 non friends he’s hired the past half decade or so have been Monty and Bedenbaugh…so pretty freaking outstanding I would say.
Cale Gundy wasn’t one of his buds…I’d say he worked out pretty well too. Kevin Wilson was also a non-friend, non-family, and we set national offensive scoring records and made it to the national championship game with him.
That is not true. He has hired way more than that.
Ask Nick Saban @soonerfantu:disqus
nah.
In fairness, that’s taken completely out of context. Everyone taking it to mean staff rather than the fact he was sticking up for one of his kids & he gets blasted. The statements combined were pretty good I thought. He was responding to question comparing Puke’s Hill dismissal to Mixon situation.
Said everything about what Mixon has done then this statement
https://twitter.com/ryaber/status/545286126357848066
Never hire anyone you can’t fire.
The roll on out with em brutha
Wasn’t that in context about Mixon, said in same question? Pretty sure I read that earlier, not about his staff as people are making it out to be.
https://twitter.com/Jordan_Esco/status/545286422660251648
Now that would be some good news.
That would be GREAT news! He was sorely missed at ILB.
That’s like getting a 4 star JUCO who already knows the playbook. He was obviously missed on defense. Could also be a helpful recruiting pictch/mentor for Anthony Wheeler since they went to the same highschool!
Now there’s an absence that reeeeeeaaaaaallllllllly hurt.
https://twitter.com/EricBaileyTW/status/545286650063228929
pretty candid……
Ya’ think Bob? If he would lower his ego flag for one minute and make a simple declarative statement such as “I made that poor decision, and I won’t make another like it” he would gain a lot of respect.
And that’s a wrap w/ Bob
So stoops admits boulware said no go on the punt..you believe him? I don’t think boulware wanted to kick again.
Everyone in the stadium with any tie to OU didnt want them to punt again.
AMEN to that!
Nonsense. I don’t think I heard a single person say a word until Hill was racing into the endzone.
I was yelling at the TV, “what are you doing!!!” as I saw the punt team still on the field. Was really an idiotic move.
Anyone with even rudimentary knowledge of the game knows you don’t kick that thing again – if for no other reason than the increased chance of error sending a tired kicking team down again. Worst OU football coaching decision of the last 40 years, by far.
Not a well grounded comment Herman. I don’t believe this statement is true. And I do not have alternate plays to serve as an argument. I simply believe this is not a call you can make. But this is a good place to air it out.
That was an absolute boneheaded move, made out of arrogance. You make a true freshman QB go 85 yards with 1 minute to go. If he does then your defense sucks and you blame them, you cant give their best chance of winning the ball in that situation. Horrible move by Coach Stoops and by far the worst in game decision he’s ever made.
Not at my house. As soon as I saw that it was a 5 yarder, I said, no worries, that doesn’t get us a first down so decline. Then I was in shock at his decision. I said for what? then we get beat because of it.
Not at my house either….we were saying “what the heck are we puting to one of the most dangerous return men in America for”…stupid
