Bob Stoops Pre-Spring Presser

Image via NewsOK

Welp, here we go.

Another year, another spring of OU Football. It will certainly be interesting to see just where everyone stands, both players/coaches and fans alike, coming off the disaster that was 2014. I feel pretty confident in saying we’re all ready for a fresh start.

Hoping the media in attendance today will get answers from Bob on a number of the more pressing questions with spring practices set to kick off on Saturday.

As always, we’ll be here to recap things for you live as they happen. So settle on in.

I just want to say…How Epic of a picture in this mornings Daily News post! Troy Aikman, Shepard, Casillas wow Great defense. #39 is All-America DE Kevin Murphy; #44=The Boz; #40 is All Big 8 DE Darrell Reed; #20 is future Pro Bowler Spencer Tillman. Someone probably said all of that but I just saw the picture

    • NewMex Gaucho says:

I was a sophomore at OU when that pic was taken, brings back some fond memories. Had classes with most of those guys in the pic.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Look at Bob all dressed up today.
    https://twitter.com/john_shinn/status/573550931276496897

  • Jordan Esco says:

Bob says the new coaching hires pushed back the start of spring ball by “a couple days.”

  • Jordan Esco says:

re: new (and old coaches), Bob says “we have a lot of experience within this (offensive) system.”

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops says LB Dom Alexander will miss the spring following wrist surgery

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops also says redshirt freshman DT Courtney Garnett tore his ACL during winter workouts.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops also says they may hold Kasitati out for the first couple practices.

But this is pretty typical of years past w/ upper classmen (my words, not Bob).

  • Jordan Esco says:

In what will surely be the company line for some time, Stoops will give no clues on the QB1 spot. Simply says the competition will be a good thing to push all of them.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops says he “will not be interested in seeing Sterling in a live scrimmage at all.”

    • Stephen Dale says:

interesting only three ( 3) TE’s listed on the freshly-released roster : Carson Meier, Dalton Wood, & Conner Knight…….Ijalana is listed as a DL……

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops says Mixon won’t be treated different than any other player. If he makes the plays in practice and does what they ask of him, then he’ll play just like anyone else would.

    • Jeff says:

Tired of OU screwing this kid around “give him the damn ball”

      • SoonerMGB56 says:

How does this statement suggest that they are screwing him around?

        • Sooner 76 says:

Just the final piece of his punishment, just one I didn’t see coming. The young man has a great attitude, I’m sure he will deal with it.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

He’s back practicing, and it’s all in his control now.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

No doubt, the kid is paying his dues. What he did was wrong, but proud that he has since taken the high road and made a lot of sacrifices to get things back on track.

      • Indy_sooner says:

These comments are baffling IMO. We have 4 elite backs and Mixon has never played a lick of CFB. This time last year, we knew nothing about Perine, but he displaced the entire roster.
No handouts for anyone. If he’s as good as stated, then he should have no issues earning it and then make it count. Otherwise, hit the bench.

        • Jeff says:

1 Elite, 1 very good and 1 average at best, please put the pipe down! Mixon has done everything asked of him so left him play!

          • blaster1371 says:

Not sure we know what that list of “must do” consist of. He still might have a few more boxes to get checked off.

          • Indy_sooner says:

I’m not gonna stoop to your level with the insults. I stand corrected, we have 5 *Elite* backs all of whom were 4 stars out of college and all underclassmen or lower. In fact, going by your analogy we might as well hand off the ball to Anderson, seeing as they have never played a lick of CFB and has a gazillion yards in HS. My point is the best man *will* get the job, eventually. You can bet on that.

Mixon made a mistake and there were consequences which he understood and accepted. You should too.

          • boomersooner says:

wow. couldn’t have said it better. i can’t wait for them to add an ignore button. i’m just glad some of these thought processes around here are not contagious

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

What if you didn’t get vaccinated?

          • boomersooner says:

Ooh. Good point. Hope they don’t run out. Be right back

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

You go on without me…save yourself!

          • boomersooner says:

Ok. See ya. I’ll be at dinner with the fellas 🙂

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

            LOL!

        • blaster1371 says:

All that and the fact Mixon should be pretty dang thankful, and I think he is, to still be on this team. Keep doing what he is supposed to do and he will see some playing time.

    • blaster1371 says:

Do you think Ford is in the doghouse for his fumbles? Sounds like he is becoming more of an after thought.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops says they are still expecting LB Frank Shannon back ‘some time in May’

    • Tipman says:

Wasn’t Bolton quoted by an assistant coach as having a knack for getting to the QB and is an OLB?

      • JD says:

Unless that was recent…a while back Bolton acknowledged that he was moving inside and trying to add weight…further acknowledged by Stoops statement…btw Bolton does have a knack for getting to the qb…his hs film looked a lot like Strikers…be nice to get some good pressure from the inside…the idea is to not know where the pressure is coming from

    • blaster1371 says:

Alexander out? I’m sure I missed something. What is that about?

    • JB says:

Ahhhh sh&%…they didn’t learn a damn thing after last year. Striker is not a DB, Bob. Stop trying to make him one.

      • HoustonChiver says:

seriously. Who looks at a guy that good at getting to the QB and being disruptive and thinks, “man…this guy should be in coverage!”

        • SoonerGoneEast says:

If a guy is really good at getting to the QB, the last place you want him is anywhere near the QB at the snap.

        • JB says:

If I had his number, I’d call Bob and say, “Why not just allow the opposing team to score on 1 play every possession so our defense won’t be on the field so much?” Makes about as much sense as putting Striker at nickel or SS.

      • JD says:

Where does it say they are moving him to db! “experiment in diff places” could be along any gap on the line….close your eyes…take a deep breath ..and say “ohhhhmmmm”

        • Boom says:

He can’t until bob & Mike are gone

          • JD says:

I can….we aren’t far off…we may have made the right changes for a run…can’t wait to see

        • Kelsta says:

I believe the point being made is that we heard a lot last year about moving Striker around. As a result, one of the best pass rushers in the country spent many plays in coverage. We didn’t need him “experimenting in different places” to consistently get to AJ in the Sugar Bowl. If teams figure out how to slow him down, make an adjustment. Until then, put him on a tackle and let him do what he do….yo

          • JD says:

The idea was to keep both him and Grissom (or Bond…going “big”) on the field more and improve our run defense (which we did)…with the statement that Parker and Thomas would possibly be moving to nickel points back to the year before…if we can get a mix of the last two years defenses then we will have a good balance of run defense and pass defense

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Never understood it. Logic dictates that it is always better to pressure the QB than to count on consistent coverage.

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

      What a disappointing statement.

      • JB says:

I wish I hadn’t read this thread, specifically that statement by Bob. It’s given me the sick feeling that we’ll be as awful defensively as we were last year.

        • SoonerGoneEast says:

I hope BS plans on staying around for a long time, but if his baby brother comes out this year with equally inept defensive game plans, it will be difficult to continue to support Bob.

    • Sooner 76 says:

A lot of ridiculous comments to this statement (not to mention many other statements). Last year Striker player strong side LBer exclusively. Never moved around.

However, in 2013, he played Jack and moved around, often attacking the QB from the blind side. I like this statement. Striker will be move effective if he moves around and confuses the offense.

      • SoonerGoneEast says:

I understand what your saying, but I take that statement to mean that we are going to move him around to try and figure out where he is most effective. That question was answered two years ago, then we inexplicably went away from it.

        • SoonerMGB56 says:

I take this statement to mean that they are continuing to try and find creative ways to utilize him.
E.g., when Coach Reynolds was at Miami, under Capers, they ran a hybrid 3-4/4-3. In their scheme they took the Jack/DE (Taylor?) and walked him up and down the line, probing for weaknesses, disrupting QB and OL reads, and getting favorable matchups with him in this way.
          Perhaps this is that?

          • blaster1371 says:

Isn’t that how Venebles used Jeremy Beal? I thought was effective.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

Yes, I believe we did do some of that with Beal. And maybe Dan Cody. And now we’re recruiting a number of players that could fill that type of role.
I hope so, at least. That’s an aggressive, attacking scheme. I hope and pray that on both sides of the ball we get back to aggressive, attacking scheming and play calling.
If we go down, go down swinging!!!!!

        • Sooner 76 says:

Ok, but I just don’t understand how you could interpret it that way. Granted it was a little ambiguous, but still.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I complained about this last year, and everybody around here said it would work out. I’m not a big fan of moving somebody off of something they do that well. It’s like when Capel tried to make Michael Neal more than a 3 point shooter. Let the kid shoot, it’s what he does best.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops singles out Dallis Todd & Jordan Smallwood at the WR position

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops says Kenyon Frison “has been really impressive.” Also mentions all the other usual suspects at tackle. And Joseph Paul, which is a name you probably haven’t heard in a while.

  • Mustvid says:

Any time Stoops singles players our we never hear from them again.

  • Jordan Esco says:

I hope this is just coach speak. Barring injuries I just see no reason to burn his shirt w/ the depth they already have at RB.

  • DFWSooner says:

Any rumors on who the new GA’s and QC coaches will be?

    • HoustonChiver says:

Sounds reminiscent of TK when he was on the scout team.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Except Mayfield at least played well enough to be Big 12 Freshman of the year. Knight threw pick sixes in big games.

        • tfb_fortyseven says:

This is the guantlet for Mayfield: Beat OU’s best practice QB. Being the best practice QB does not reveal how easily injured you are or how well you handle real-game pressure. If the two are neck and neck come Fall’s first game, you’d have to believe Bob/Lincoln will give Baker the nod due to what you’re saying D.

        • Boom says:

So did Manning/Brady. I’m not say TK is the starter or even the best but people need to understand the best QBs in the world make game losing decisions too.

  • Jordan Esco says:

This doesn’t make a ton of sense to me right now either.
    https://twitter.com/ryaber/status/573556743348731904

    • Randy says:

I like it, they become the blitzers and can still cover for the most part.. Wilson should have stayed there last year..

    • JD says:

Looks like we’ll play more 335…or at least take a backer off the field during passing downs…for some teams that could be a majority of snaps

  • Jordan Esco says:

Bob says Mike moving up to the press box isn’t something they would consider right now, but will experiment with it this spring/summer.

    • JB says:

Good grief. They really didn’t learn any lessons after last season. If for no other reason than keep him from getting into shouting matches with his players on the sidelines where everyone plus the TV cameras can see, he needs to be up in the box.

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

That statement real doesn’t make any sense.

    • SoonerMGB56 says:

I saw this reported slightly differently by others.

      John Shinn
Stoops said OU will experiment with Mike Stoops in the press box in the spring. A final decision hasn’t been made

      Ryan Aber
Stoops: Mike Stoops in press box is a possibility but will experiment during spring
The way the others reported it was strongly indicative of the perspective that Mikey upstairs is clearly being considered, but nothing is decided.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Not surprisingly, Stoops says everyone he spoke w/ re: Diron Reynolds had glowing reviews.

    • SoonerMGB56 says:

I really have a hard time understanding why you’re working for a group that covers OU. This comment is much like most I see from you, heavily cynical, dismissive, and dripping with contempt.
This reads as if you doubt the veracity of Bob’s statement re Coach Reynolds. Do you have feedback re Coach R that is different?

      • Jordan Esco says:

You’re reading way too much into this as usual. It’s become pretty ridiculous, actually. That you’d take what I said above and turn it into what you’ve turned it into….man, you have a real problem. I’ve run out of ways to try and help you, sorry.

        • SoonerMGB56 says:

So now personal attacks on me. Dont’ think I attacked you personally in any way.
So if I’m wrong, clarfy. The whole “Not surprisingly” was something that only colors the statement with the writers doubt. No other reason for that to be added. Take that off, and it’s reporting. With that, it’s a negative editorial on the quote.

          • BoomerDave says:

Jordan writes in a very “snarky” manner when it comes to Bob. I’ve figured that out and have learned to just live with it.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

I’m guessing I know where it comes from. I saw Bob respond back to his questions, a couple of times, in a pretty dismissive fashion. And I didn’t think it was necessarily warranted. But most of the media don’t let it color their reporting.

I’ve seen Bob do that quite a bit. I don’t like how he interacts with the media, often. Hoover is another that he does. Consistently with Hoover. They must have a thing that goes way back. But Hoover is an ass, most of the time, when he asks questions, so at least some of Bob’s reaction is fair with him.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

lol, seriously, you’re reading way too much into this. Just take it at face value and quit trying to find something that’s not there.

          • Jed says:

MGB, email is notoriously bad at capturing tone. If you’ve spent any time in a major company, I’m sure you can think of examples of hurt feelings on the basis of email content that was not intended to injure.
We’re all sooner fans, with few exceptions, here. Jordan is not an exception.
Bob is not the most forthcoming or enthusiastic at press conferences. Rereading in that light, I’m sure you can recast Jordan’s comment as simple humor.
            Let it go.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

Fair points Jed…..I’ll work on that, re Jordan.
And I think you’re being extremely generous about Bob’s media interactions frequently. That annoys me to no end, truthfully.

          • Jed says:

He’s Bob. I don’t know the man, so I won’t attempt to psychoanalyze; but he sure doesn’t suffer fools or welcome questions.
Personally, I’d like to have an office next door to his with visitation privileges and passes to practices and games. Alas, when last I brought the matter up to Joe C, he must’ve lost my letter; because he never did reply. Thus I’m forced to soldier on, sustained by whatever little snippets of news I can find.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

            Amen, amen….
            Give us snippets….

          • Sooner 76 says:

I think it’s the former. He doesn’t suffer fools. He is great with the national media, but he has zero patience with the fools in the local media. I agree that the coach speak gets old, but then so does the snarkiness.

          • Herman Bubbert says:

He happens to be stating what a lot of people think, re: the credibility of Stoops and his public statements.

Personally, I find the belligerent demands for positivity annoying, given the state of the program, so I guess you can’t please everyone, eh?

          • Sooner 76 says:

I don’t demand positivity, but if someone has something to say positive or negative, be specific, don’t just make a nasty comment. I get really tired of the FUJH and the FUMS crowd.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I am not sure what you expect from a public figure like Bob. As a representative of the University he has to be careful not to violate privacy issues such as the HIPA rules or to make statements regarding contracts or employment or any other subject that might be used in litigation. As a leader he has to be careful about criticizing his players or assistants in public. There are lots of other land mines in that field. Best to not say anything but happy happy things.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

Also Jed, when Jordan leads into threads like this one, with statements like this, made in the open post today, pre presser, I know not to expect neutrality in his reporting….

“Jordan Esco: While I and others may choose not to believe anything the coaches are telling us,”
But I’ll work on taking Jordan with a grain of salt…..as we all do with coaches everywhere….have you heard a Jason Garrett presser???

          • Jed says:

Again, I think you’re too hard. We all want more info. We all know that Bob ain’t gonna give it to us. We all watch the presser anyway. Jordan just takes a bit more acerbic view toward our shared addiction.

          • BoomerDave says:

If Bob hurt his feelings, then that explains a lot.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

And I’ve got nothing personal against Jordan….I appreciate the forum and the info all the TFB’s bring. I do find his snarkyness annoying, I guess. Seems that if you’re not a long time reader, you could get really misleading messages sometime, from the way the info is presented. Guess I’m old fashioned, in that I think journalists should present information in a neutral fashion, unless clearly labeled as an editorial.
And Jordan is light years better than Hoover.

          • Jordan Esco says:

All you do is personally attack me in every comment you make. Again, I can’t help you. Just stop reading what I post. Apparently it will make your life much more enjoyable.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

No personal attack. I didn’t question your intelligence, nor suggest that you have “problems”
I questioned the color you seem to add to simple comments, that portray them in a more negative fashion than many others who report the same things.

          • SoonerCindy says:

Do you really think encouraging posters to quit reading TFB is the best approach? Since many people comment about it don’t you think there is something there? Instead of reacting, don’t you think it might be wise to try and understand what is being said?

          • OohRah Mama says:

Not to cause any issue but may I point out that the suggestion was “Just stop reading what I post.” Nowhere was it suggested or encouraged for anyone to quit reading TFB. I do admit, there are some members on some other boards whose contributions I simply skip over, but that’s only if they’ve proven to me over a very long period of time they are sure to have nothing I’d care to waste eyesight on. They likely feel the same about me. Ack.

FWMOOIW, it doesn’t bother me to have other posters give a critique, or be “sunshine pumpers” or “negative nellies”. What takes the shine off is the rare occurrence when posters regress to personal insults to another poster – instead of disagreeing with the points in a post itself. TFB is a gem for many many reasons, one of which is such regressions are indeed a rarity.

Play nicely, folks. After all, we’re TFB & Sooner Family, not ill-bred orangebloods.

          • Jordan Esco says:

I fully understand. I also have come to realize that no matter what I say or do, some people are only going to focus on what serves their agenda.

I’m not here to make everyone try and like me. If they don’t like what I have to say, then it seems like I’d be helping them in suggesting not reading what I have to say. Nowhere have I said to quit reading TFB altogether.

          • Stephen says:

You’re not creating the compelling argument you think you are.

          • SavageSoonerEsq says:

I took Jordan’s statement way different than you did. I.e. First, I thought it meant that Bob is obviously not going to go on the record to parrot anything negative he MIGHT have heard about Reynolds. Secondly, I thought that it also keeps with Bob’s modus operandi of keeping things as positive as possible.

Do I get tired of Bob’s sunshine pumping at times? Yes! Would I rather he inject negativity into his conferences? No! If he doesn’t have anything positive to say, I prefer that he continues to do what he normally does, just keep it positive.

      • Travis Coyle says:

        Huh? Lol wow

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops confirms what we already noticed in the spring roster update post – Cortez Johnson is no longer w/ the program.

  • Jordan Esco says:

And that’s a wrap for today.

Now we have only to look forward to the < 3 minute "practice update" videos SSTV will allow us the rest of this spring. Huzzah!

    • JD says:

sure miss the practice vids from two years ago

      • Jordan Esco says:

        +1000000000000000

It’s kind of sad of something even as simple (and brief in their own right) as those were can make all the difference.

        • SoonerMGB56 says:

          Amen, Mr. Esco.
Please give us vids, some limited access for you guys, something…….
Bob’s paranoia here is way too extreme…..just like his mentor, Snider. Is Spurrier the same?

    • Bob Edwards says:

Did we get a total count on the number of times Bob used the word “good?” I counted about 20 in a one minutes segment but figured I didn’t have the energy to make it through the entire press conference.

  • Cory Reedy says:

OUr backfiled though….Rodney, Mixon, Samaje, Ford. Seriously? How many plays do we need to run to get all these guys touches? I like OUr problem.

    • JD says:

If we go HUNH well run up to 100 plays a game…we’re also likely to have two on the field at the same time some if they use Mixon in the slot

    • thebigdroot says:

Don’t forget about Ross, he was hardly used in a way that he could be successful.

    • akryan says:

I have almost no doubt that Rodney redshirts unless he’s so good that it’s impossible to keep him off the field. Samaje, Ford, Mixon, and Ross, should be more than enough.

  • Bob Edwards says:

Here is my summary of Bob’s view of the state of the program:

    https://cbswxrt2.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/basket-of-goldens.jpg?w=620&h=349&crop=1

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Funny how they just keep piling crap on Joe Mixon. I’m curious if this is all of the punishment or if they are gonna screw him some more.

    • Chris White says:

Could just be a case of them wanting to keep him and his role under wraps. They did the same with Blake Bell last year in the Spring game.

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

That wouldn’t really be fair to him. He’s done everything they’ve asked, he hasn’t got in trouble again, he’s kept up with his grades, and now he gets to practice but not play. It just doesn’t seem fair or right.

        • Boom says:

Lane, I get it. However, coaches see exactly what he can do in practice and off season. Having him in the spring games seems worthless to me. I would hate to see him hurt. If he did get hurt then this thread would crucify Stoops for playing him

          • JD says:

yep..he’s allegedly our best rb on campus and best fit for this system…he has a good chance to be our most productive back next Fall

          • Perry Dickey says:

Can you provide some quotes from the source of your ‘allegedlys’? I thrive in the offseason on that kind of stuff. Seriously.

          • JD says:

If you watched the Kansas game you can hear quotes quoted by the announcers about what is surely to be Mixon made by Bob Stoops…”My best rb is over in the dorms…” or something along those lines….and it seems like Cale made his comment during signing day…could have been another day but both coaches were giving high praise about Mixon…there was also talk during summer workouts about him last year and that he would def not redshirt but that was all before the incident of course

          • JD says:

He’s also a very good receiver from a rb perspective…he will can go rb on one play then run the HUNH and be out wide the next with a backer on him…he’ll produce a mismatch because not many backer will be able to cover him

          • Lane Gilstrap says:

the Spring game is worthless to you? Why even have a spring game then?

          • boomersooner says:

“Having him in the spring games seems worthless to me.”

seems your reply is quite a leap from what he actually said

          • Boom says:

Lane, spring game brings out the best in some of the young guys who don’t play. For example, a couple of years ago Marshall Musil played RB and ran for 100 or so. He was a FB and didn’t make it through the next year. All the older guys will be held out. Also, offense/defense will be plain jane so not much to see.
Spring game = 40 – 50k in attendance which equates to additional revenue.

      • j l says:

Bell hurt his knee in the practices leading to the spring game. Thats why he wasnt playing.

    • Jed says:

I’m with you on that. On the other hand, we don’t know the details of the penance he was assigned. Maybe this is no surprise.
Regardless, he seems to be taking matters in stride. And if, at the tender age of going on 19 he’s already learned the virtue of keeping his head down and letting the little stuff roll off his back, he’s light years ahead of most other people his age.
Save for the loss of control that started it all, I have been quite impressed with his actions and apparent attitude.

    • Bob Edwards says:

According to what Bob said, this was part of the original punishment.

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

I know I’m just curious if there’s more to come that is “part of the original punishment”.

        • JD says:

If there is more then Mixon already knows and moving forward it will be up to his behavior…imo it’s not a bad thing that he’s not playing in the SG…he still gets to practice and take snaps…Coaches know what they have and from what I’ve heard the coaches actually think his is the best rb on campus…he’ll be fine missing the SG and will have more motivation to work hard and compete for snaps next Fall

          • blaster1371 says:

True. He will get to participate in other scrimmages. As fans we kinda get hosed as we have to wait until September to see him in action .

          • JD says:

yeah…I look forward to hearing some news from TFBs on his play behind the scenes then I’ll just use my imagination

          • blaster1371 says:

I hope you imagine him running all over Texass!

          • J J says:

            This

          • Perry Dickey says:

This is the main reason I scour this site daily. I am swayed by every notion and begging for one to captivate me!

    • ALar03 says:

IMO this is understandable, he is still in the same academic year.. It doesnt bother me to keep his talent hidden until the Season… because all that the Spring Game is, is a glorified practice!

  • james babcock says:

Just looked at the spring roster just a couple thoughts.first if all the incoming recruits don’t qualify academically and second if any players transfer after the spring we could be low again on scholarships. We go through this every year you can’t win championships if your scholarships are constantly in the 70’s and everybody else has 85 scholarships.just ask Texas ,and usc how hard it is to win when you don’t have full scholarships.

    • Drew says:

Lol, that was pretty fu . . . oh, wait, you’re serious? Dude, you have got to try harder than that.

    • Sooner Ray says:

If all the players quit we will have to cancel the season.

      • james babcock says:

No but it is a competitive disadvantage not to have full scholarships.we all want Oklahoma to win another national championship but to do it you need full scholarships to go through a 14 or 15 games season.

        • Bob Edwards says:

We are full on scholarships. You don’t know what you are talking about.

        • Buster Rhymes 4 says:

James…Take A deep breath! Go back and redo homework and comeback and report on scholarships. You have 30 minutes… mammuse…

          • james babcock says:

I checked we are at 83.

          • Buster Rhymes 4 says:

Ok… well we can’t over sign just because you think someone will leave. Overton(fwiu) is qualified. And we always get some transfers at the end of spring. it all works out…

          • Boom says:

What if we get the ND OL guy. Hey, we have a scholly for him. If we lived by your rules, we would have to say no thanks, we are all full at the inn.

          • Sooner 76 says:

We are short at OG for next year unless Paul or Samia go to OG. Is he a OG or a OT.

        • Sooner Ray says:

Sometimes the coaches like to have a couple scholly’s in their pocket for transfers and early players the following spring. I’m guessing they have full control over how they are handling the situation.

        • akryan says:

I’d rather be two under the limit than be one of those teams that greyshirts guys that they promised a scholarship to.

    • Bob Edwards says:

You obviously don’t actually read much of what is written here. There has been constant conversation on here about us taking a small class next year because we don’t have enough free scholarships. You might try actual reading some before commenting.

      • james babcock says:

I did right now we are at 83 that’s it everybody qualifies and doesn’t transfer every year you have don’t qualify and you also have players transfer. several years ago we also had the same scenario where we where only going to take 15 players we ended up taking 28 that year.so you don’t know what’s going to happen next year.

        • Bob Edwards says:

So we are two short in the spring. Most of the top programs probably have at least that many transfers during the spring. I live in Alabama the Tide usually loses several players this time of year because they can’t get playing time. If anything we are in better shape than most this time of year.

      • Super K says:

Bob disagreeing with the commenter is fine. The condescending tone however is what we want to try to avoid. I appreciate it

        • james babcock says:

That is fine super k only trying to alert people to what’s going on with the scholarships may not be at full scholarships come next year.

          • JD says:

Bob always likes a spot or two available to get a surprise transfer or give to a senior walk on…just what he’s always done…better to have a spare then to have to run guys off

        • Bob Edwards says:

Fair enough. My apologies. Edited for tone.

    • Sooner 76 says:

We are at 83 now. Numbers are always down in the spring.

      SMH

  • james babcock says:

Now moving on from the Scholarship controversy let’s talk joe mixon he is the most talented running back we’ve had since DeMarco Murrayif we how to win the national championship next year he needs to touch the ball 25 times a game.

    • boomersooner says:

the most talented rb will start, barring an unforseen circumstance, such as injury or stupidity. period. moving on from this one

of course, those that hate bob, mike, or life in general will disagree with this

      • james babcock says:

That is joe mixon yes i said ithe is the most talented.

        • boomersooner says:

he hasn’t played a down in college football yet. i’m sure that optimus guy will have something to say about it

          • james babcock says:

He has the best hand’s of any running back on the roster and the best overall foot work he is a super star in the making.

          • boomersooner says:

i hope so. time will tell. i don’t speak, write, or understand unknown

          • Perry Dickey says:

I respectfully wonder how you know this kind of stuff. And assure you its validity has no measure on how giddy it makes me!

          • james babcock says:

It’s people close to the program who are saying this not me that’s what makes me excited.

          • JD says:

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Cale would have started Mixon over Perine if there wasn’t the incident last fall…both Cale and Bob had stated their best rb is in the barn…it’s gonna be a helluva one two punch next year…then you have the other 3-4 guys that could play on dang near every D1 team in the country

          • boomersooner says:

hey. that’s not very much of a limb. 🙂 mixon seems freaking awesome. everything about him screams “electric”. i just can’t say he’s gonna be a homer cause i can’t see the future. i hope he lives up to the hype. he seems like a good kid and i’m definitely pulling for him. i just don’t want to add the “this guy stinks” meltdown to all the other meltdowns that go on around the doucheysphere

          • JD says:

I hear ya…bunch can happen…just going off film and what his position coach has said and even the head coach….I hope everything comes together next year..be a bunch of crow to served if that happens but we have a passionate fan base with a mental make up that spans the full spectrum…takes a lot of patients (in my family alone lol)

    • Sooner Ray says:

I haven’t seen Mixon play D1 ball yet so I’m not saying he’s better than anyone until I see it happen. I think he will end up being a nice compliment to Perine.

      • james babcock says:

What they are saying he is more talented than perine i think he will be the best running back we’ve had since Adrian Peterson.

        • boomersooner says:

i’ll take my eyes over what “they are saying” any day of the week. i’m hoping mixon will be awesome, but i don’t know that yet, nor does anyone

          • james babcock says:

Ask super k to weigh in on this what is his opinion mixon or perine.

          • boomersooner says:

you are entitled to your opinion, just as he is his. i’m just saying for you to say he will start, and be a superstar is setting yourself up for disappointment. i hope he meets your ideal but when you set life’s bar too high, all that is left is to bitch about it when it doesn’t measure up to your standards, which is where quite a few people on here seem to be

          • james babcock says:

But after last year can’t we all hope for a fairy tale ending can’t stomach another 5 lost season.

          • boomersooner says:

haha. yessir. i would love for him to help us put up half a hunnert e’er game, whether its your way with a lot of rush yds or my way with a lot of catches out of the slot and backfield and rush yds. do i want him on the field? yes. do i think we need him on the field? i think he would help a lot more than he would hurt

          • Sooner Ray says:

If Nixon plays for OU, that will make headlines. 🙂

          • james babcock says:

My mistake sooner ray I meant to say mixon.

          • Sooner Ray says:

I always take the easy shots. 🙂

          • Boom says:

We did have a Nixon play for OU, think he was a WR

          • james babcock says:

Yes that was back in the 1970’s.

          • J J says:

They had WRs in the 70s??? Just kidding I know they had like 4 on scholarship a year lol

          • james babcock says:

Back in the 70’s ,and 80’s we had a number of good wide receivers and tight end who went on to play in the NFL.

          • J J says:

Hence the just kidding comment… Ease up & have some fun…

          • Sooner Ray says:

Maybe if you didn’t talk so damn fast. 🙂

          • J J says:

Yeah I am a big city girl ….. Maybe I was slurring?

          • Sooner Ray says:

If you were slurring, I’m going out on a limb and saying it has nothing to do with population density. 🙂

          • J J says:

Truth… Unless I was trying to block out a certain % of the density. Lol.

          • Boom says:

that’s funny. I think the stats were around 10 catches for the YEAR. Tinker, Rhodes and can’t remember the others but they had to have them for outside blockers

          • J J says:

Thank you for recognizing the sheer humor in it… Football was different with the bone! Like 5 catches for the season but 4 would be for TDs. Lol

          • Boom says:

and the route was? You are correct, the post

          • J J says:

            Generally uncovered… At that lol

          • Sooner Ray says:

I think you are correct, sounds familiar. He wasn’t the first one that popped into my brain though. lol.

          • Steve Johns says:

            Freddie?

          • Boom says:

Yep, that be him. Hope he’s reading cause that is one heck of a pull out. He was a good’en

          • Steve Johns says:

Didn’t he play some rb too?

          • Sooner 76 says:

His son was signed by OU a few years ago (2002), was a TE but almost never saw the field.

          • Perry Dickey says:

But isn’t ‘what they are saying’ all we have at this point? If I’m not mistaken the whole premise of this site, “By former players, sports writers, and random guys who love this game”, is an insight I’ve heretofore never seen the likes of. I don’t care at all if its embellished, impromptu, or indistinctive. Evidently, someone, somewhere, somehow is much closer to the grass in Norman and the movements of these players than I am thousands of miles away. I want it all, its very entertaining!

          • boomersooner says:

Haha. Nice. I was going more for all we know is optimus did it and he’s awesome and mixon, we all want to be awesome and according to all we know he is

    • Steve Johns says:

Mixon has the “potential” to be a great one, we’ll see this fall if he lives up to expectations. I certainly hope he does. As of now, Perine is the man that will get most of the carries.

      • james babcock says:

Like i said I believe mixon is going to shock everybody and become the best running back we’ve had since Adrian Peterson he will be the starter by the middle of the year.

    • akryan says:

Mixon came out with a ton of talent and hype. We’ll see if that ends up happening. As of today, I don’t want carries taken away from SP.

  • J J says:

God I miss football. That’s all. Carry on.

    • Boom says:

I’m learning a lot about fixing cars in the off season. There is a bunch of car shows out there. Like you, football is king.

      • J J says:

Last offseason I spent in multiple surgeries from my fantastic ankle shattering at the sugar bowl. I couldn’t even walk by the spring game. I actually think this off season is worse. It ended so poorly & is dragging so slowly… Brutal…

        • Boom says:

How you doin on the ankle? Sry to hear as nothing is easy when it happens later in life. Don’t take that wrong, I’ve had 7 leg surgeries due to football but I was young and recovering was much easier. My wife broke both tib/fib in half during a co-ed soccer game. 2 surgeries with a rod and 4 screws later it took her a year. Then, as she was recovering we/OU had a bummer year. Hoping 2015 is better for all of us.

          • J J says:

Awe, thanks! That’s rotten luck about your wife! Yes, tib & fib. 16 screws & 3 plates later… When I do it, I do it big. Luckily, I’ve had a great surgeon & exceeded the expectations with recovery. Who knew dodging Luke in an alley could be so treacherous?!? Lol. Honestly, I was leaving a restaurant we’ve eaten at every December in NOLA the last 5 years. No excuse, no alcohol, just misstepped on a porch

          • Boom says:

Bummer. I go to NOLA for business a couple days a month for the last 15 years. Love that place and have my little hole in the wall restaurants/bars. Late nite for me is 10:30 now, work gets in the way.

          • J J says:

Yes, NOLA is actually one of my favorite places in the world. My hubs has a conference he had to speak at every December. Me & the kids usually spend a few days there with him. There’s seriously no excuse, I have left The Gumbo Shop 20 times easily to head back towards the Monteleone. Just caught a step on the porch funny & hit the cobblestone so hard it fractured (didn’t even fall)… My break was same as the Louisville basketball player…. But I still love NOLA.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

Jordan, I saw some shots at you when scanning the comments. All I can say is I sure appreciate your hard work to put these summaries together.

Let’s go win a natty; then we won’t have to worry about anyone’s tone!
