Some Thoughts On OU @ Baylor

Image via Associated Press

Maybe I’m speaking out of turn, but I can’t help but feel just how different that win Saturday night left me, and I presume many an OU fan, feeling.

And I saw feeling because I think it was almost, dare I say, a somewhat unfamiliar one for OU fans. It had really been, what, the better part of two years and the all too referenced Sugar Bowl since the Sooners had a win like Saturday night?

Now obviously it means nothing if you don’t take care of business over these next two weeks, but for one night (at least) all felt right again in the world for Sooner Nation.

OFFENSE

* I am definitely not too proud to admit I’m often times quick to throw OU coaches under the bus. So I would be remiss not to start this by praising the brilliant game plan both Lincoln Riley & Mike Stoops (and really the entire coaching staff) designed for this game.

At the end of the day it always comes down to the players executing said game plan — and boy did they ever do that — but these coaches are paid to have them prepared and put their players in a position to win come Saturday, and this OU staff did exactly that.

* Again not to take a single thing away from the game Riley called, but how can you not credit Baker Mayfield for being the freaking play maker he so clearly is?

Any number of those plays he made you simply cannot draw up. Every single positive thing you have read or will read in the coming weeks is well deserved. The guy has simply transformed this offense and, with his charisma, arguably this entire team.

Yeah, there was the interception. And, yeah, there are times when you’re screaming for him to just throw the ball away and live to fight another day. But those are so easily swept to the side when the guy just continues to find a way to make good things happen.

* Is there really even anything left to be said about Samaje Perine? The guy is an absolute tank, able to grind out those tough yards breaking tackle after tackle, and then you see him rip off a 55-yarder seemingly sucking the will out of the last remaining Baylor defender all the while.

* Maybe even more to that last point since he’s been here for four years and not just two, how about Sterling freaking Shepard? I don’t even want to think about how screwed OU looks to be at WR next year after he leaves, I just want to appreciate him in the crimson and cream while I still can.

How he continues to get open despite teams knowing he is the primary option on almost every play is beyond me. If you can forgive the double negative, quite simply there isn’t a play the guy can’t make.

* All praise aside, there was a couple things I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed in. And I say that FULLY aware that even bothering to mention them is nit-picking for the sake of nit-picking. So know I do so with literally zero intention of being ‘that guy’ after a HUGE win Saturday night. I’m just rattling off observations both positive and otherwise.

First, I was surprised how little a role Joe Mixon played in this game. I feel like I read all week how involved Riley was going to get him and how the idea was to get him the ball in space. And yet we never really saw any of that. Clearly didn’t wind up mattering and as I said above, with the win even I can’t bother getting all that worked up about it. But again, it was just one of those things I took away from the game.

Second, couple big drops for a guy in Mark Andrews so many of us have been pleading you get the ball to more. I get that he’s just a redshirt freshman and he’ll almost surely make those catches every other time, but still those are typically plays you just have to make in games like the one Saturday night.

DEFENSE

* Again, just one hell of a job on Mike Stoops’ part and really this entire defensive coaching staff. The transformation they have made as a unit in the span of less than a year has been incredibly impressive.

* And nowhere was that transformation more evident than the job they did on Corey Coleman. Yeah, they were rolling coverage to whatever side of the field he lined up on, but so what. The guy is one of, if not the best WRs in the country. If you’re not going to double team that guy, who in the f are you going to double team?!?

A lot of the credit I’ve seen being given to Jordan Thomas and having not yet had the chance to go back and watch the replay I’ll assume deservedly so. But I also feel fair in saying that type of performance almost has to be a considered an entire team effort.

Regardless, OU made him a complete non-factor in the game and Baylor essentially pissed down their leg as a result.

* I have to agree with many a comment I’ve read from Baylor fans this fine Sunday morning with regards to their play-calling on Saturday night. Mind you, I had NO issue with them continuing to run between the tackles on early downs as OU was stuffing them at the line and/or driving them back for a loss. But I do think their fans have a legitimate gripe.

* And I have to point out the job OU’s defensive continues to do disrupting the pocket. I thought they made Jarrett Stidham look like the true freshman he is, which is EXACTLY what I (and, to be fair, many others) said they absolutely had to do coming into this game.

Now to Stidham’s credit he made several impressive throws, but on many occasion when OU took away his initial read it looked to my untrained eye like he panicked a bit.

* Said it here before and am quite certain we’ll do it again, but Charles Walker is a frickin’ beast. I don’t care enough one way or the other to really get into the Matt Dimon ejection. Personally, I think you could make a case either way and at the time I thought it was a pretty weak call. Honestly, a part of me still does. But at the same time I get why it was made and understand the point of view from those on the other side of things.

And heat of the moment I completely understand his ‘heel turn’ — as so many described it on social media — as he was escorted to the locker room, but won’t be the least bit surprised if the PC police latch onto it and it being that’s now how players should represent OU blah, blah, blah.

* Not exactly breaking any news here in proclaiming Ahmad Thomas has taken his fair share of heat during his time on the field in Norman, so I couldn’t help but feel good for the guy with that game-clinching INT. Heck of a nice diving play on the ball as well.

SPECIAL TEAMS

* The missed PAT was, in my opinion, just one of those fluky things and while it didn’t ultimately factor in the outcome, it was obviously a good thing to see Austin Seibert hit that one field goal, which at the time was a pretty big kick, following said PAT miss. Kid also had a number of solid punts on the night, one in particular that, with the help of some quality coverage, really flipped the field.

* OU punt returns – Won the game, don’t care.

* Alex Ross KO returns – Won the game, don’t care.

Love it!!! Time to get refocused for a HUGE game against TCU: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsLPy_Rojc0

  • Daddy R says:

Great thoughts! As for Mixon not getting involved, I felt like Riley tried, several times, but this game was not built for a Mixon, it was built for a Perine. When Mixon had his early opportunities, he tried to make too many cuts, which normally is fine, but not in weather like that. Perine makes his one cut and just runs through people. I hope Mixon learned a lot from Perine in this game on how to make successful cuts in weather like that, cuz Mixon has ability to do that too, he just tried too much “shaking” last night, and never got a good one. 7 carries, 7 yards. Frankly, I’m glad Riley realized Mixon wasn’t clicking in this weather, and stuck with the Beast this time. Had Mixon had ANY success, I think Riley would have fed him more like normal..

    • Deputy Moonman says:

Half agree, but I do recall seeing Perine make a few cuts himself where he almost went down.

      • Daddy R says:

It had to have been slick as all get out.

      • Jofield says:

He did, but that only seemed to happen early and he adjusted to it. Mixon will learn as well to make a few less cuts in that kind of rain.

Plus if you slip and catch yourself with one hand and then barrel five yards for a score then nobody cares that you slipped.

        • pitbull17 says:

This^^. His low center of gravity and balance are the difference between him and Mixon. Both are great at what they do, but as we got to see last year against Kansas in the rain, Perine is the back you want to have toating the rock.

          • soonermusic says:

Coach Merv commented a couple of times during the game that as the blocking formed, Perine was able to cut up inside for yards, but Mixon kept insisting on trying to outrun everyone to the edge, with little success.

    • RBear says:

They schemed for Mixon to hit the corners to make his yards but Baylor was too quick on the edges which took that page of the game plan away- Although it happened fairly late, he possibly got his bell rung on that no-call targeting play which, I’m guessing, was further reason to keep him out.

      BOOMER!

      • Daddy R says:

He no doubt got his bell rung on that one! BS non call.

        • RBear says:

He was all smiles and celebrating after the game so he’s prob fine and good to run wild next week.

          • Daddy R says:

            *weather permitting. lol

Yeah, he’ll break some good ones against TCU on our REAL GRASS, that is hopefully dry.

      • Oscar says:

Yes on the scheme. It seemed that Samaje got most of his carries out of a 1 back set, and Mixon in a 2 back set. Because of the rain, Mixon probably should have been carrying using the same plays that Perine got his yards, because they are more north&south.

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

I noticed we didn’t do well on lateral running plays because of Baylor’s good team speed. We had much more success going North and South than East and West. Seemed like Mixon’s runs were side to side and got stuffed. Perine had his best success just lowering the pads and getting upfield. In time, Mixon will learn he can do the same too.

    • Kevin says:

What struck me about the entire offensive playcalling is that for the most part (except towards the end of the game when it was obvious we were trying to milk the clock), Riley (and by extension, Mayfield) was content to do what worked – not getting fancy, and having a system/scheme and talent that maximized the players’ skills. Baylor’s D wanted to do what they’ve done in the past 2 years – overload the LOS to stop the run and to disrupt pass timing, but this year we didn’t have to throw out our game plan after the first series. So while I would’ve loved some nitpicky things to have happened (more Mixon, other receivers to get the ball better, etc.), it looked to me like we did a fantastic job of countering the defensive game plan.

  • thebigdroot says:

I griped about it last night and will continue to do so until something is done. If we are talking player safety, why is nothing being said about those damn media people with their cameras not getting the hell out of the way when the players are coming at them? Is it really going to come down to someone being seriously hurt? I know the media will not make a big deal of it because it’s their people. Just ticks me off.

    • SoonerMagic76 says:

Said that same thing myself last night. When Shepard slid out after a coach and ran into a knee of a sideline media person, he looked temporarily hurt. And it’s not like he went far, the lady was only 2 yards off the field.

  • Daddy R says:

Any thoughts on that Non-targeting call on that hit on Mixon? If thats not helmet to helmet, I don’t know what is..

    • SoonerMagic76 says:

That was incredibly clear cut. Horrible miss

    • Deputy Moonman says:

That play pissed me off something fierce. How many non-targeting calls have teams gotten against OU this year? I want to say at least 3. But let’s eject Dimon for trying to kick away a dude standing over him… Please.

      • thebigdroot says:

They don’t call those on BU, ask Knight.

      • Daddy R says:

Yea, if you’re not going to throw the flag on that, and at least review it, I’m not sure why the rule is even there. But that dude was “spearing.”

        • Thegunnfather says:

Seemed like both team were very fired up and had a lot of extra stuff going on and in Waco we were taking the brunt of the calls they were making to try and clean up the game. It was bs. But was a fun game to watch. Just on the edge of a fight for 4 quarters.

  • BoomerDave says:

Credit must go to Bob Stoops for the coaching changes he made last year. Huge upgrades in our OC position and our DB coaching. Big, but not huge, upgrade in WR coaching. Even the loss of Montgomery turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Our D-Line coaching is the most impressive of all, IMO. We are talking about the exact same players on defense playing like totally different guys. That’s what great coaching can do.

    • Daddy R says:

“We are talking about the exact same players on defense playing like totally different guys. That’s what great coaching can do.”

Also, another year growing up and maturing certainly helps with this effect..

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

BOOMER! Great game my fellow Sooners. Coaches called one heck of a game. I hate to reference it, and Jordan I know you hated to do so as well, but that really was that most complete and enjoyable win since the Sugar Bowl. Fantastic job on both sides of the ball.

Shepard really is incredible. His hands and his ability to get open, even when tightly covered, are second to none.

    And Perine just completely dominated.

And mayfield… wow. The not throwing away and, much more noticeable this game than some others, not looking in the flat are quite irksome. But it’s hard to whine too much. He is just a playmaker.

Next up: purple toads. Let’s go get it done!

  • Kevin says:

Completely agree! Granted, it’s just one game, and we have 3 more challenges left ahead of us (4 if fortune smiles on us), but aside from some stupid mistakes and penalties, it’s hard to do anything but feel like for at least one night, OU looked like the ideal OU again in the big game.

I think the performance by the players and the preparation and adjustments by the entire OU coaching staff in a way is validation – that perhaps the Stoops brothers have not yet lost touch with defense, that with the right talent and skills we have a scheme that can stymie explosive offenses (granted, it was against a true freshman QB), and that a brand new offensive scheme to keep pressure on the opposing team may have been more essential than changing the DC position. It’ll be hard to keep those great assistants in OU for the long term, and even though it was just the first big game in a long gauntlet (I’m ignoring Tennessee and the previous games for the sake of the fact that we can’t celebrate until the season’s over and we’re 13-1), but I think there’s plenty of reason to think that Stoops make some pretty smart coaching changes in the offseason. Go figure.

Good stuff as always, Jordan! This game was a solid all-around good team effort win. Loved every second of it.

I thought our OLINE played good for how much praise baylors dline was getting

  • OUhomer4life says:

I haven’t been on this site in a while. I’m just going to say, the one thing that needs to stop are the stupid penalty’s. Other than that BOOMER SOONER BABY! It was a great win!

  • Jofield says:

Mixon got a fair number of touches (about 10?) for a guy that couldn’t get his footing. Why would you give more touches to a guy that keeps slipping? Don’t get me wrong though, I love Mixon. I just don’t think there needs to be any explaining why he didn’t get more.

    • Daddy R says:

Kind of what I referenced below. If he would have had some success, he would have gotten more opportunities. Perine was having more success, so we stuck with it. To me, that is the hallmark of good coaching.

  • Kevin says:

This was the first big game in a long while where any time we gave up a big play/drive on D or we didn’t have any success on O that our coaches were eyeing the alignments and plays to probe for weaknesses (like there was actually a strategy!), rather than simply calling plays and seeing what sticks.

  • RBear says:

Just a reminder, order has been restored:

    OKLAHOMA IS BETTER THAN BAYLOR

    • Super Keith says:

Not yet. We have two more victims remaining on our revenge tour…but, you are correct: OKLAHOMA IS BETTER THAN BAYLOR.

  • Martin says:

LOL, the special teams is the remaining Achilles heel.

    • STL Sooner says:

I think they truly view punt returns as a “don’t screw it up” and we win kinda thing. It used to bother me, but I am getting used to it. Heck, I hate Al Davis and the Raiders, but Just Win Baby!

      • SoonerMagic76 says:

It still bugs me. We don’t even try to pressure the punter and don’t try to return it.

        • Daddy R says:

Yea, if we arent going to return, might as well try and block it. I hate it because it makes Shep have to catch the ball absolutely SURROUNDED by 5-7 opposing players. 1) that makes it infinitely harder to catch the punt, and 2) if he happens to drop it, no way we have a chance to recover it..

  • Zack says:

Good notes Jordan. Like you said it’s not hard to write some after a game like last night and it’s hard to disagree with any of them. As far as mixon I think part of his lack of production or usage was due to Baylor seemed to follow him any time he was on the field as if he’s the one guy they had to stop. Not a bad game plan from Baylor but everyone around here knows that perine is the better player overall.
Andrews has got to make those catches, weather looks like it will be similar (only colder) next week so ball security and make tough catches needs to be a point of emphasis.
Defense played well and especially the DL after dimon was ejected. I know he’s a good player but he shouldn’t be taking any time away from romar, wade and walker who I think are better for the scheme we want to run.
Neal and Westbrook are also going to need to step it up in the next few weeks with Shepard likely to draw all the attention going forward.

  • Boom says:

Funny, a friend of mine who played at Baylor many moons ago said, OU is a dirty team and added, maybe of all football. I laughed and said, glad Baylor has choir boys. I said, ask around the Big 12 and they will all say Baylor is the most dirty team.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

The Sooners survived a lot of 15 yard penalties. They came out with the personality that no matter what they were the toughest team on the field. They also showed mental toughness too as they answered Baylor every time they got some momentum.

That’s old school Bob Stoops for anyone who thinks he’s lost his edge.

  • Jared William Reininger says:

All week I said this was OU putting all its chips on the table. This was the season. An unbeaten that sounded a bit cocky and unafraid of OU. I knew there were some OU guys that wanted to win really bad but the whole team got after it.

And some extra points. I get the hole blitz us to try and pressure Mayfield into a bad throw but they left Sheperd out with a 1 on 1. They showed zero respect for Mayfield and even less for Sheperd in my opinion. And twice OU used that against them. Also I have to point out that Westbrook straight up worked his corner two or three times and because the passes were a bit overthrown, some people overlooked that. But he blew blew that corner out of his shoes. And while I sometimes I hate those instances when Mayfield needs to clearly throw it away, I think overall its a positive. This team has showed that they will not give up just like Mayfield does on Amy given play. They refuse to throw in the towel and so from a leadership standpoint I think he has created a very positive thing from it.

Defensively I loved the attitude. I feel like we were unafraid the entire game, something we only did for a little over a quarter last year. I loved the chippiness but guys need to be smarter. They can’t have huge mental mistakes like the several personal foul calls, some of which I felt were weak. And further to that point was I the only one that felt the game was pretty poorly officiated? Like not in our favor?

    • Martin says:

Reininger, I don’t think it was a sign of disrespect to Shepard and Mayfield. The Baylor DC (Bennett) has consistently relied on heavy blitzing at every stop in his career. I was just as surprised at times.

    • DrewChubbs says:

If Dede would take diving lessons from A. Thomas, those wouldn’t have been overthrows!

  • Martin says:

Since someone mentioned the missed Mixon helmet to helmet tackle, how about the lack of holding calls on Baylor last night? I saw someone tackled a few yards from the returner on Baylor’s sole kick return.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

      Text book targeting

      • brainpimp says:

Are you sure. Because according to the rule it looks like if he was a runner unless he was in the grasp and forward progress stopped you cannot target a runner.

        • Rene Goupillaud says:

Re-watch it. He’s hit up high by the first tackler then the second comes in right after leading with his head and hits Mixon as he’s going down. If they are trying to prevent concussions, this type of play has to be against the rules.

    • Defend Colfax says:

There was holding all night but they didn’t call much on us either, so I was fine with less yellow.

    • RBear says:

Simply a dirty team, top to bottom.

    • SamSooner says:

A Baylor player was holding Shannon on that big kick off return. The same kind of holding they called on Darlington.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Right on both counts. It wasn’t just holding, it was a tackle. And that was about the most blatant targeting I have seen. Stunning that they didn’t throw a flag.

  • SamSooner says:

If I was going to give this little post a title it would be “The Mayfield Factor.” I’m reminded of what Moses Malone said, when asked about how Dr. J impacts the team’s play. I won’t attempt to quote him because it was so many years ago. But to paraphrase Malone, he said the Sixers don’t play hard for Dr. J, they play hard because of Dr. J.

Those is more than one degree of separation between “playing for” or “playing because.” While the former can be short lived, the latter implies “debt”. I have to play hard because I owe you my best effort. This has spilled over from the offensive side to the defensive side of the ball.

Even if it meant he was going to lose his life, Mayfield was going to get every yard he could on that run he had last night. You have to admire that and live with his mistakes. But I tell you what, he has impacted this team in more ways than one. He doesn’t back down and he’s competitive.

Enough with being nice and being the media darling, by playing up our choir boy image. Mayfield has brought the right amount of attitude to this team.

    • Defend Colfax says:

The difference with Mayfield over Knight. Trevor may be the more classic, mature leader, but when he came up short he had more apologies than exclamations or proclamations. He and Baker couldn’t be more different in that regard. This is football, these guys feed off of that raw emotion.

      • Defend Colfax says:

I still think Knight could be successful with Riley. Heupel was lacking in so many areas. This will only get smoother.

        • Oscar says:

I agree. I would bet also, that Trevor has improved a lot over the past year, and also. that Baker’s play has influenced Trevor in a positive way.

          • Defend Colfax says:

            In a good way;

          • Spitting Bull says:

I love Trevor. But honestly I hope we don’t have to find out how much he’s improved. Can’t really tell in mop up duty. Mayfield is the best thing to happen to OU in a long time.

      • hOUligan says:

Agree that Knight is a heckuva leader, too, as shown by him being elected as a Captain, again. But Mayfield has a raw energy and tremendous will. He was hurt a couple of times last night, hammy and left shoulder, again. But bounced back up and showed such ‘will’. Mayfield also has a better arm and better at seeing/reading/delivering the ball ‘so can back it up.’

        • Daddy R says:

That dude is pretty damn fast too. Much faster than folks (opposing teams) give him credit for.

        • pitbull17 says:

Mayfield goes through his progressions much better. I’m not trying to take anything away from Knight in saying this, but with his attitude I think the players look at it like Mayfield is the guy the would rather be in a foxhole with. They really respond to him.

      • Scott says:

Mayfield is special , Did any of our QB’s in the past have the same confidence as Mayfield. Bradford , Jones , Knight don’t have that moxy

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Mayfield is a foxhole guy. He is a tough hombre.

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Also felt this was a physical game that was, at times, officiated very poorly. I thought there were a plethora of missed calls and some that were called that shouldn’t have.

  • STL Sooner says:

Does anyone else, after watching the reply SEVERAL times, think Stidham took a dive on the personal foul penalty that led to the Baylor TD?

    • Deputy Moonman says:

The QB was already falling, intentional or not. The personal foul was weak in my opinion. Basically the equivalent of a player tossing his hands away out of annoyance, but without the realistic force to knock a QB to the ground.

  • Chris White says:

A good Offensive Coordinator recognizes what is working and what isn’t, Baylor was able to swarm to Mixon and stop him but couldn’t stop Perine so that changed the game plan a bit and Andrews dropped 14 points so that changed the plan a bit (flowers).

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Flowers made two huge catches. He’s got very good hands, and his blocking is improving. We have another good FB.

    • Ed Cotter says:

Mixon was slipping quite a bit out there, so not sure if he was getting very good traction, and that really seemed to affect his cuts, especially on those east/west runs trying to get around the edge. Just my take.

    • clemsonSOONER says:

The weather didn’t help with Mixon or Andrews. Neither ball 81 dropped was a jump ball they were both darts, and the pigskin was wet. Also the surface was slippery not allowing Mixon to cut. This is why running outside the tackles was tougher too. We all know if you’re going to run North and South between the tackles Perine is the man.

  • Martin says:

One final observation… what’s up with the those black pellets at McLane? At one point, it looked like the entire OU offense had been sloppily eating Oreos (without the milk). Was it the white jerseys, because I didn’t see any of the Baylor thugs with the same look.

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

This. This is one reason why I would hate playing on fields like this if I were a player. It’s a wonder that crap didn’t get in anyone’s eyes.

    • Chris White says:

Artificial turf gets covered with little rubber pellets after it’s laid. They get everywhere especially when wet but just didn’t show up as much on a black jersey is all

      • SamSooner says:

Baylor players weren’t slipping. I don’t put it past Briles to roll the field with those rubber pellets. He fitted his team with the correct length cleats. Those field are slippery when they’re dry, much more when they’re wet.

  • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Anyone else notice after OU celebrated the win, they showed players walking into the tunnel and Sanchez had a pretty severe limp?

    • Defend Colfax says:

He rolled that ankle up pretty good. Also everyone limps after the game. Ice bath up next.

    • SamSooner says:

Yeah. I think that happened on his INT. A little rest and he’ll be okay. Part of healing a ankle sprain is playing on it. Sounds crazy but it’s true.

      • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Haha ok. He just looked like he was really struggling to walk.

        • Daddy R says:

He knew he was on camera and probably exaggerated the limp a lil. “Like, look, we just whooped ya’ll, even though I got this limp.” Or, it was his pimp walk.

  • Zack says:

Also want to point out a couple things.
I said I wanted to see our defense hold them under 400 which I thought was a bit wishful thinking, however we held them to 416 so I’m impressed now with the defense.
Ahmad Thomas deserves a lot of credit, he’s made more good plays this year than bad plays, he did have one bad tackle early on I think on that huge run by Linwood.
Many were mad about the committee and while I don’t like that Baylor wasn’t in the top 3 since they were undefeated, clearly they were ranked about right, it’s ou who should have been upset about their ranking. Now I think we will find out how much the committee is going to hold the Texas loss against us. I think there’s only one thing ou needs besides winning out, and that’s for Stanford to take care of notre dame.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

The people dogging UT need to realize that right now, they are sitting 5th in the Big 12. It’s not like they are the 9th place team or something. Plus rivalry game an all that. I think our resume and eye test should make the UT loss a moot issue amongst other 1 loss teams.

      • Kevin says:

I think the biggest challenge will be the fact that 1-loss ND and 1-loss OU have both played Texas this year – ND blew them out and OU lost in a rivalry game. So the “common opponent” thing may be the tipping point, even though OU is probably the hottest team in the country right now.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

I think it should only come down to common opponents if the resume is similar. I don’t think it will be, if OU wins out. ND would have what, a win over Stanford? And OU would have wins over Baylor, TCU, and OSU. Pretty sure those three wins would be better than or equal to the best win for ND. Plus OU looks better on paper.

Not saying that is how the Committee will do things, I’m just saying that is how I’d look at them.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

What I don’t like is this talk about losses. What about wins? The Irish beat Temple, USC. OU assuming we win out, would have beaten no 6, no 15 TCU, no 5 Pukes in successive weeks. Plus we would be Big 12 champs.

          • Big Higg says:

Hey Tennessee and WVU were ranked when we beat them weren’t they? If the playoff committee is gonna do that for ND they should do it for us too.

          • DrewChubbs says:

They do it for Bama, too. Big time. It seems there is never a failure to mention that UGA, Lester State were ranked when they faced Bama. And it seems Bama’s loss to 3-loss Ole Miss was a good one because they were ranked, too.

          • Slim Sooner says:

Yeah, and ESPN talking heads (Mark May) give Bama a pass on their loss because of the 5 turnovers which of course isn’t “like” them. SMH

          • Kevin says:

I agree that if we win out we will probably have a stronger case from “quality wins” than probably any other playoff contender. But playing the devil’s advocate here, I could see them doing that as a way to disrespect us and the B12.

          • hOUligan says:

While I don’t like it, it is what it is with this conference. ND victories over USuC and IF, Stanford carry more cache’ than OU victories over Baylor and hopefully TCU and the pokes. The OU victory over an sec darling, UTenn, should carry some weight, though. OU needs to continue to pass that ‘eye test’ with ‘the look of a champion’ in convincing victories these last 2 games.

  • STL Sooner says:

Mixon maintained his composure well last night. After the helmet to helmet as a runner, he then took another cheap shot from the Baylor player on the QB kneel down. Again no call!
I would like to see those two interrupt his meal at Pickleman’s….sorry, I couldn’t resist!

  • SCKSChief says:

Followed the game on my phone last night…Dish is coming next week, finally. I’m amazed with how well this team is playing! Gotta keep it rolling now. Anyone have a YouTube link? I’ve been searching and can’t find anything.

    • Daddy R says:

I just looked at a channel on youtube that usually posts the game, and its not there yet.. keep checking stonecoldsooner channel, and it’ll prob be posted at some point soon.

    • leatherneck1061 says:

Was just going to say the same as Daddy R. stonecoldsooner has become my goto on youtube. I’m betting he’ll have it up later today or at least by tomorrow anyway, and they’re always good quality uploads.

  • Mizuno44 says:

Really satisfying that Briles wakes up humbled this morning, and it will be interesting to see the impact on recruiting

  • hOUligan says:

Line play. Mike was able to get pressure w/ 4 and 5 guys and drop 6 and 7 in coverage. Stidham had no place to throw because Walker and Tapper and Romar and Wade were playing out of their minds. The oline was as effective as they have been all year and getting better each game. Oafman was a non-factor as was Billings.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Agreed. I really didn’t think we’d be able to get the kind of pressure we got with just 4 guys. But we did it all game long. Some of those sacks/pressure were due to great coverage downfield as well. The entire D played great.

      • SamSooner says:

Did you see Walker stand up his guy? He did that all night.

      • Hotrod33 says:

That just proves how good a dline really is. If we can get pressure like that against TCU and the cowpukes we win convincingly.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

I’ve been saying all year that the next thing the OU defense needs, in order to be elite (if we aren’t already) is a Harris/McCoy on the Dline. Walker might be that guy. And if Overton is as good as his potential as well, our D is going to be good for years to come. I agree, a great D line makes the rest of the D look that much better.

          • Defend Colfax says:

You didn’t even mention the 5 star.

          • brainpimp says:

Gallimore or Lampkin you have so many to choose from.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

I just listed the two guys we’ve seen in action. We know Walker is a stud, and we’ve seen Overton do some good stuff. You are right, we have other guys that may be just as good. We just haven’t seen for sure yet.

    • Kevin says:

The D-line depth was a huge factor too – we could rotate fresh bodies to keep the pressure constant. And we have the talent so that the 1’s and 2’s are really interchangeable.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

The thing that stood out immediately is that OU responded right after Baylor scored. They let it be known that they were not intimidated by Baylor, the nighttime crowd, or anything else. This team will NOT be pushed around by anyone. It’s O damn U. We’ve been winning championships since your daddys and their daddys were in diapers. Playtime’s over.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

Yes, I know I’m getting ahead of myself, but ….

Clemson will likely make the playoffs as #1 seed. If we can win out and Notre Dame loses (or one of many other scenarios), we would likely be the #4 seed. Could be a nice opportunity for payback!

    • SoonerfanTU says:

The only bad thing about that scenario is that we’d likely get Clemson in Miami, and not get to play in Dallas.

  • Deputy Moonman says:

If OU wins out I like the chances of at least one team in the current top 4 falling. North Carolina is playing really well and could feasibly knock off Clemson in the ACC championship. Ohio State has an ugly remaining schedule ahead of them with both Michigan and Michigan State, and then the Big 10 Championship, which if Iowa does make it, one of those teams would eliminate the other. Last is the Stanford beating Notre Dame scenario. And who is to say that Alabama couldn’t lay an egg in the SEC championship?

  • leatherneck1061 says:

Looking forward to rewatching the game today. I just gotta say I was so inspired with the fight our guys displayed out there. On the road in a hostile environment, they showed absolutely no fear and fought like rabid junkyard dogs. Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up just thinking about it. So proud of these guys.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

Did you record it? Watching it on soonersports.tv? I’m trying to figure out the best way to re-watch …

      • OU Banjo Picker says:

I love soonersports.tv but its difficult to rewind or skip ahead, so I prefer to watch it off my DVR, but love having that resource for when I’m board and can pull it out on my phone.

  • Kevin says:

It seems like Baylor is highly dependent on momentum – they’re at their best when they catch a break (defensive stop/turnover, 3 and out by opposing offense, big offensive play) and basically try to crush the opposing team’s spirits while they’re down. When they get off schedule though, it’s much harder for them to sustain any sort of execution or momentum. Just my $0.02.

  • Defend Colfax says:

So many results went OUr way yesterday. Even the pokes staying undefeated. I have to admit I was laughing the whole time ISU was rolling them.

    • Hotrod33 says:

Yes they did. If ISU has a few more playmakers they beat the pukes again. Right now we are the best team in the Big 12 bar none. We have it going and taking care of business while that other team in the state is struggling to win games. How they do it is surprising but it will be hard pressed for them to beat us right now. I don’t see us losing the rest of the year.

  • SamSooner says:

@JJ, did you make it out okay? Did you have more retorts.

  • Daddy R says:

    Baker “Superfly” Mayfield

    https://youtu.be/-cmo6MRYf5g

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Baylor, time to get out of the big chair and go to your room. Daddy’s back.

  • Hotrod33 says:

Baylor tried to force their will on us early to break us and we didn’t want nothing of it and they tried the rest the rest of the night to do that and they lost. We kept forcing them into situations that they were unfamiliar with and they folded slowly. The play were Dimon got rejected was a joke and that should of been personal foul penalty on both players. Anyway, great win and we showed the country who is still the Big dog in the Big 12.

  • Defend Colfax says:

They had our D line on skates on the 1st drive, I was a little concerned. It was almost as if we went out to take their best shot. They made plays after that but the D line didn’t get pushed around like that again.

    • SamSooner says:

I knew they could score. I was looking for what the offense was going do. They did what OU needed. After Baylor scored, I was more relaxed than usual.

      • Defend Colfax says:

I knew we would score our points but I was hoping we weren’t going to have to sit through 100+ points scored. 68-63 would’ve looked bad for everyone,

  • Thegunnfather says:

Felt like the game changed(even though it was very early) after Baker got in Oakman’s face on the sideline during second possession. You know the one Oakman seemed to laugh off, not laughing now! Loved how physical this game was and the general feeling of how much the teams disliked each other/ wanted to win this game. I never seen what happened on the ejection and I thought one of the calls on the qb was the officials fault for a late whistle. Liked to see that Brown has a mean streak but was not smart play. Point being loved they didn’t back down and hope we can continue to play right on the edge of crazy but clean it up just enough to stop the penalties. The more you win the bigger the game gets. Bring the BOOM.

    • Daddy R says:

Wouldnt it have been easier for number 9 to just take the dive? (but I guess they probably wanted him in the game..)

    • OUhound says:

Honestly, I thought his slow motion fall was done fairly well. The roll over onto his back, one leg held in the air. That’s just……..special.

    • Daddy R says:

      (refresh for pic)

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Pisses me off more every time I watch it. That simply cannot be allowed to happen. If they are going to fake and injury, they are going to have to do a much better job than that. It’s like intentional fouls in hoops. At least ACT like you are going for the ball, don’t just walk up and hug the guy and look at the officials.

    • Mysterio1 says:

Why in the world did they not get a penalty? Captain Obvious!

    • BOZsayshello says:

Been watching football for 50 plus years and this is one of the most despicable, lame ass acts I have ever witnessed! Just totally WEAK and for once I absolutely agree with Herbstreit. SMH

    • cdzendolet says:

I’m probably in the minority here, but I think the guy might have been legitimately hurt, and was going to try and stick it out for the next play, but his teammates were looking out for him and trying to get him looked at by the trainers. I agree that it does not look that way, and it is a bad look from the video, but I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

  • Jason Vos says:

Charles Walker becoming a beast. Shedding those senior Baylor Olinemen like they were nothing

  • leatherneck1061 says:

And by the way, after the way Desmond Howard and all these other pundits talked up Corey Coleman to the sky, I only see one writer today (Maisel) pointing out how Sterling Shepherd completely outclassed Coleman last night. Coleman: 3 catches for 51 yards; Shepherd 14 catches for 177 yards. As much as there were a lot of great performances last night, that one should be getting more attention than it has IMO.

  • JJSoona says:

My views………..This team is developing some nasty, punch you in the face attitude and its all business-like. The D-Line should all get game balls. Linwood got his yards but the guy took some nasty hits. When he made a play he was classy……back to the huddle. Hit of the night goes to Flowers and all he did was get up and walk away. One tough Motha. Optimus….. well he was just himself. They are still feeling some of those punishing runs he dished out. Sterling “fly-trap” Shepherd. If he’s not one of the top 5 receivers in CFB, then someone is stupid.

Baker is one badass QB. He never settles, even when he should. Fearless, “I will hit you in the mouth” kind of guy. He can make every read and every single throw on the money. He’s a “football player”. In-game coaching got an ‘A”. I knew that Mike would be better off in the box. He can see more and it shows. One game at a time……..but this team has a chance. A solid chance.

    • Daddy R says:

      Sterling “fly-trap” Shepard.
      Baker “Superfly” Mayfield
      Samaje “Optimus” Perine
      Joe “Slick” Mixon
      Charles “Suplex” Tapper
      Charles “Holy Sophomore” Walker.

    • Daddy R says:

Have to give the Box some credit here, it easier (for Mike) to see what goes on, on the field, when you are contained (In a box) from running a muck on the sidelines after bad plays, thus preventing you from seeing the field clearly for the next play.

    • OUhound says:

Linwood had 103 yards, but 34 were on one single run. Other than that one play, Linwood was 69 yards on 20 carries….less that 3.5 ypc. He’s averaging 7.5 for the season. That’s less than half his average and that is just outstanding run D. Even with the 34 yd carry, he still wasn’t even close. Coleman vs Shepherd, not even a discussion there.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

I loved their attitude Saturday night. They showed fight in the face of the Big12 bullies and they even won the game!! I loved it.

  • JJSoona says:

Oh and John Klein picked against us as did Poke homer Kelly Hines in the Tulsa World. Even the hated Picker got it right.

  • Josh says:

I take back every bad thing I’ve ever said about Baker Romo. To hell with throwing it away… you are the man! You can have my daughter.

  • Clay Davis says:

One thing that struck me was the OU depth definitely gave them an edge over Baylor. For all the talk about Baylor improving their recruiting and developing some beasts on the O-line and D-line as well as the skill positions, at this point in the season Baylor’s first stringers were worn down. The guys rotating in didn’t make enough of an impact either.

Maybe we are finally starting to pick up some quality depth after the disastrous classes earlier this decade.

    • Recondo says:

BU’s depth comes from recruiting track stars and gym rats. OUr brand develops football players. Huge difference.

  • Clay Davis says:

I don’t mind your nit-picking at all, Jordan. We definitely could improve. If we clean up on some of the dumb penalties, keep Mixon involved, Andrews hangs on the ball, etc. we can play with anyone in the country.

  • Sooner born, Sooner bred says:

1st of all I’d like to say congratulations to the team and coaches on a great victory in another very hostile environment. It’s all coming together as I had hoped and thought it would. Anyone who questioned the Stoops brothers ( which I admit was one ) seriously owes them an apology. Realistically though Sooner brethren, for a team to just dominate year in and year out is just not realistic anymore. Can it be done. Alabama’s proved that. So many things have to fall into place. Injuries….you have to have enough depth to overcome them. Off the field problems ( As we saw last year ). Scholarship limitations have made it imperative that you cannot miss on your evaluation of an recruit. When an team such as Baylor can do what they are doing now ( Used to have more OU fans at the game in Waco than Baylor ) that tells you something. So much more parity in college football today ( which is good for the game) than used to be. My grandfather and father ( God rest their souls ) would take every defeat so personal that it would take days for them to get in a better mood. I would always have to say, we can’t win them all ( Don’t think 47 game win streak will ever be touched ) or it wouldn’t be interesting. Only 120 some teams in division 1 football. Anyway….God bless the team, coaches, and THE University of Oklahoma. There is only ☝.!

  • Defend Colfax says:

I hope we are out there looking at every high school, ranch, farm, orchard for the next Ripkowski. Where do you find these kids? Power lifters? Wrestlers? We need a couple. I would love to see an up-tempo fat boy fleet.

  • Josh says:

So we just need to keep Lincoln paid up until Coach Stoops retires…

    • Zack says:

That’s the plan and then Cale will be the oc.

      • Josh says:

I love Cale even though him not having eyebrows freaks me out a little

      • Daddy R says:

I’m just wondering if Cale likes to be a guy who is just a position assistant, so he can stay at OU, regardless of HC change (since he’s an alum and such..). We had a coach like that in HS, who had coached there for decades, and finally had an opportunity to become head coach and turned it down, because he didnt want to ever have to be fired from the school, and would (and could) work for any future HC.

        • Daddy R says:

I mean, surely Cale has at least had offers to become an OC somewhere by this point, don’t ya think? If he wanted to move up the coaching latter, why hasn’t he taken a higher position somewhere else yet?

        • Recondo says:

Didn’t somebody on TFB say Cale has mentioned being happy where he’s at in the past. I think he likes recruiting and avoiding the stress/ additional requurements of being a coordinator or HC.

        • Zack says:

Yeah I agree with most of that up until last spring when he moved to inside receivers. Maybe he does want to be like a BJW that has a bunch of loyalty to a coach and/or program. Therefore wants to expand his ability to help in different roles.

    • Recondo says:

I think they said last week he will be getting paid to stay. I would expect pay bumps for most assistants in the off-season.

  • Mizuno44 says:

Fowler’s repeated comments on Stidham’s beautiful tight spirals was a bit redundant and also had a flavor of creepiness

  • Defend Colfax says:

I know it’s hard to tell because it’s Indiana but Kevin Wilson does a good job.

    • Daddy R says:

Still hate the “check with me” offense that he employs. SOOOOOOOO happy we got away from that.

      • Golfluvr13 says:

Me too! I have always despised that check with me idea. I love that each of OUr plays now have a run or pass option in them and it’s the QB’s job to check it at the line.

  • Daddy R says:

Only second time in History that two Sooner qb’s starting an NFL game on same day.

  • JJSoona says:

Oakman will leave this year with that meconium taste in his nasty mouth. Loved seeing him get punked. Dirty-a$$ player.

    • Recondo says:

He was certainly a non-factor. 2 tackles and a personal foul. Tapper: 4 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pass deflected, 1 QB hurry. Found it on BU’s athletic site last night before bed.

    • Rene Goupillaud says:

Oakman’s is overrated. A RS Freshman outplayed him all night.

  • JJSoona says:

I wonder how many recruits were there to see OUr Sooners man-handle the bear cubs?

    • OUhound says:

Well, Baylor had several top recruits. Wonder how many thought…..hmmmmmmm….glad i came but not for the reason i came.

  • JJSoona says:

    This is just……………odd: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzPU3IcfwCY

    • Daddy R says:

Great freaking clip by Herbie. Man he was spot on. Makes Baylor look like the Ginormous douches they are.

    • J.r. Kamm says:

Honestly, I was thankful that Baylor pulled this when they did. Baker had just gotten horse-collared and was a little shaken. It gave him an opportunity to work out the kinks before the next snap.

  • roygbell says:

Jordan, I am glad you have come around to the idea that Riley’s not coaching Baker’s innovative and creative play-making out of him is a good thing. We would have lost the Tennessee game without Baker’s play-making and we might have lost last night’s game if he hadn’t have kept that play alive when he found Flowers in the end zone for the TD. That play won the game for us. Baker not giving up on plays is a good thing, not a bad thing.

I think we OU fans should celebrate the kind of game plan out coaches created and the execution of that game plan by the players on both sides of the ball. Both coaches and players did a great job.

I think this OU team is on tract to really over-achieve over the course of the rest of this season. I see how we finish the season as setting the tone for Bob to get his team back to national prominence and winning more conference championships.

I am glad that you pointed out that it was silly to be critical of anything about last nights game. I would just say that to be critical would be childish :).

Last night was the first time in a long time that OU displayed the kind of nasty demeanor of times past. We stood toe to toe with an opponent and physically beat them and we beat them badly.

I hope we do the same to TCU and osu and whomever we play in the bowl season.

    • Hotrod33 says:

If it wasn’t for the play of the Oline on that play also to sustain the blocks he doesn’t get it off either. It was a total team effort last night. Proud to see these guys continue to fight and not panick when they have adversity in times like these.

      • Recondo says:

I think the pass protection broke down a few more time than I’d like BUT they never stopped working and Baker is incredible at working his blockers back into the play when he scrambles.

  • leatherneck1061 says:

As for Jordan’s observation about Mixon, I think it’s pretty clear the weather had a hand in Riley’s decision. Mixon’s a guy that makes a lot of cuts and uses shifty moves, but we saw early on that the field was just too slippery for that. Using more of Perine made total sense under the circumstances, although I will concede Mixon is a pretty good downhill runner in his own right.

    • Recondo says:

I would also say it seemed BU keyed on him every time he was on the field. They sold out in the box when he moved laterally and even double covered him out of the backfield. Don’t know why he was defense’s focal point with Samaje and Shep on the field but I had that impression during the game and thought it highlighted LR’s pick your poison approach.

      • Daddy R says:

In my opinion, I really don’t think they keyed on Mixon that much, specifically. I think it was just the play call, and the weather. Trying to run wide in the rain was not going to work, especially with Baylor’s speed on D. The fact that they were able to beat him to the corner, is to me, just a testament of their speed, and film study of our outside runs that made it look that way. They were all over Samaje too, he just ran through them though..

      • DCinAZ says:

Baylor was keying on our RBs all night long. It was obvious they were trying to snuff out the run game.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

    Texas Christian U…Refocus…

    • Recondo says:

They are dangerous but I’m not that concerned. We beat ourselves last year, home game, their stars are hurt. Let’s get another top 15 win Saturday and move on.

  • JJSoona says:

Soooooooo we have 3 games left for sure, all of which we can win. How cool would it be to have that 4th game as well???

  • Jpsooner23 says:

Best write up of the year, JE.

  • Mysterio1 says:

Shep has some of the greatest body control I have seen from a football player in some time.
    Great win! Coaching and Execution.

  • john garner says:

Was that Coach Gundy who kissed Baker during the interview? At first I thought it was a player, but on seeing it a second time I think it’s Gundy. Man I love the comaraderie on this team.

  • James says:

    BOOMER!!!

  • john garner says:

The friggin’ “eye test” and common opponents criteria compels us to pile it on TCU. Then OSU. No sweat. Hope we do. That would seal the deal, especially if ND loses to Stanford.

  • OUhound says:

After re-watching the game this morning, that game could have been a lot better. We had three good possessions we could have scored on, but shot our selves in the foot with penalties and poor receiver play.

    • john garner says:

      Yeah, some true head-scratcher penalties.

    • Clay Davis says:

That’s what I took away too. As good as we played, it might well have been an even bigger lead, akin to the 2008 Texas Tech game.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

True, but the beauty of it is that we are good enough to overcome all of those errors and still win. Imagine a perfect game – we could beat anyone.

  • JJSoona says:

So we’re 7th in the Amway poll and 6th in the BR Poll.

    • OUhound says:

It doesn’t matter yet. Still tons of football left to play for all teams, and anything can happen.

    • john garner says:

Come Tuesday, I’m thinking it’s OSU, Iowa and us in some kind of order in the 5-7 slots with us at 7.

      • OUhound says:

Yeah but everything will change. Chances are tOSU will take out Iowa, ND has to deal with Stanford, and really, the only thing we have to be concerned about is winning out. That includes OSU. If we win out, I see Clemson, tOSU, Bama, and us in the playoffs.

        • john garner says:

Agree. You overlooking this weekend though: tOSU plays Michigan State. MSU has the skills to match up with the Buckeyes. None of that should concern us though. Like you said: win out. That should be our focus.

  • rphokc says:

    — does the dimon ejection carry over to the next game
    — what did the tv guys show a/o say about it………on the radio, or later, they said dimon was on his back with the bu guy holding his leg up a/o twisting his ankle…any thoughts

    • john garner says:

Well, the replay showed him stepping on the guy’s facemask so no defense. Dimon did it. Truly stupid.

      • OUhound says:

Frankly, if I were Stoops, that would be a one game suspension. With discipline, you cannot be thinking about whether it will effect the win or loss of the next game.

        • JJSoona says:

I can see where you’re coming from, but I saw a ton of Baylor late hits, 2 helmet to helmet not called, Briles I guess coaches them that way. They’re a dirty team and its not just when we play them. So I don’t know. If I have some guy punchimg me in the pile or trying to hurt me after a play………sooner or later you have to respond. Am I wrong?

          • OUhound says:

From my perspective, yes, you are wrong. The other team doing something illegal does not excuse our players doing it. Its totally unprofessional, no class, and not who we are. We are OU, not some classless POS that needs to intimidate that way. We intimidate through results on the scoreboard.

          • JJSoona says:

            Yup you’re right.

        • rphokc says:

but he got officially ejected……so, does that mean he automatically misses the next game

          • OUhound says:

            No.

          • hOUligan says:

Used to be the 1st half of the next game, if targeting….not sure now.

          • Zack says:

He lost his cool it happens I bet he misses at least the first half next week but possibly the whole game. Personally I think he should be a backup or a 3rd down DL. I don’t think he excels in stopping the run (I could be wrong) but I’ve liked wade a lot and think he should get more snaps. Maybe play dimon later in games when the other team might be gassed because dimon is a guy who would frustrate anyone who’s tired and/or using bad technique.

          • BoomerDave says:

Didn’t it happen in a he first half? If so, no carry over.

  • OUhound says:

I am wondering what best helps our chances to make the playoffs. Would a Baylor win next weekend make that victory bigger and help us more, or would an OSU victory that diminishes the Baylor victory but makes for a big end of the year showdown help us more? Obviously, we have to win out or it does not matter.

    • RBear says:

osu and Baylor go to 23 OT’s and osu wins by 3, we beat tcu by about 40 and then mop up duty with osu, beating them in their barn by 50

    • BoomerDave says:

The way I see it, we either want OSU to win or Baylor to blow OSU out. A Baylor blowout would really make our win AT Baylor look that much more impressive.

  • SamSooner says:

All of a sudden someone has passed the mic to Heather Dinich. Big mistake. She’s pro-ACC and anti-Big XII.

  • Daddy R says:

So Landry already out of game hurt, not sure what happened to him?

  • Kevin Burger says:

Heard some Baylor fans saying that the guy wasn’t faking an injury, and that the other player was telling him to go down because of his injury so that he would have time to get off of the field. The problem is, the play before that was the play where Baylor horse callered Baker. So the play happened, the officials conferred, marked off the penalty, set the ball, and OU was getting ready to snap, then the guy goes down with an injury. Out of curiosity I went back and timed it. 54 seconds pass between the end of the previous play, and the guy going down.

  • Scott says:

The atmosphere was crazy. Sooner nation came loud and proud and out cheered that Baylor student section that is supposed to be crazy. Baylor talked all that smack before that game saying their going to blow us out , haha trash Baylor. One thing that made me mad was those stupid penalties , we easily held Baylor below 20 points if we didn’t make mistakes. I’m fine with Matt Dimon getting into it with Baylor and getting ejected , baylor is a dirty team and got away with a lot of crap through that game , but art briles is trash , Waco is trash , and baylor is trash.

  • KJ1123 says:

I dont want any excuses this week. I want Boykin to play.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Have any top targets tweeted about the game.

  • CKill1 says:

Matt Dimon should absolutely have been ejected. As far as I’m concerned he should also sit this coming week. Just bush-league stuff from a guy on a team that shouldn’t tolerate it. Yes, it was chippy out there and yes, Baylor was doing it too. Don’t care. That isn’t OU football. Punt returns? Who cares, because our D actually made the Baylor O punt. Every single stop was a win, going against that offense. As far as Mayfield goes…I have a hard time believing he can play football at all with balls as big as the pair he’s packing. Dude has guts for DAYS. Just a fantastic leader and QB. Very happy he’s ours.

    • JJSoona says:

Yes and OUHound pointed that out to me. It makes sense. I just hate seeing our guys subjected to dirty classless crap.

      • CKill1 says:

Absolutely. The hit on Mixon(that dislodged his helmet) should have absolutely been targeting, it was vicious. I saw several late hits, punches being thrown, forearms, etc. It was a chippy game. I understand all that and know it’s part of football, but OU was teetering on the edge the entire first half, and fell off a couple times with costly PF penalties. I feel we really should have won by 17 points or more, and the penalties made the difference. We don’t have to like teams like Baylor and the way we play, but we can’t stoop to their level.

  • OUn8v says:

I think the Bear defense and the game limited Mixon. I look for him to continue to do well, especially against that poke D. Get past the first tier and him and Samaje should have a field day.
I will allow a couple of those drops, especially the one by Andrews late, due to the rain. Maybe in dry conditions, he and Westbrook make those catches. Beat the Frogs !!

    • Defend Colfax says:

ISU was gashing the pokes with their 2back sets. I expect Stillwater to be Stillwater towards Mixon, which will motivate him to do work.

    • JSam says:

I think the weather had something to do with it as well. If you note, early in the game everyone was slipping on the turf. Joe’s game is a bit more predicated on suddenness and cuts whereas Samaje can go N/S and exploit a hole in a hurry.

Joe will get his to be sure.

  • Kevin says:

Baylor had a total of 15 third downs for the game. 10 of 15 third downs were 5 yards or longer. Baylor converted 4 of those 10 third-and-long situations (1 of them being by penalty – the personal foul near the goal-line by Alexander and Romar that ended up gifting the TD). Yeah, it’s a bit disheartening that Baylor typically converted third-and-short situations (4 of 5), but most of the game, when Baylor got pushed into 3rd down situations it was typically long. I’m pretty happy with how the D dominated.

  • hushnpa says:

Too many clutch plays , gutsy , bloody, fighting back moments catches, tackles in the rain to mention last night .

One thing though ,, if the refs hadn’t had to be so busy trying to make sure things didn’t escalate into all out riot and war ,, ( that started with Oakman? going after Mayfield six yards down the line After he stepped out of bounds plus two yards from said line – throwing him to the ground ) maybe they would have noticed the blatant holding or tackle from behind on the defender :who would have been in that hole: on all but one of their big runs , the game could easily have been a blowout for us .. assuming they would have wanted to see them in the first place .
Of course the no call of the target on Mixon’s head as he was being tackled by another player later on calls their intent into question . Seeing as that is the number one big pc rule
( one that i agree with actually ) they’re ought to be some Major blow-back on that – I should think .

Longest comment I ever made and probably the two or three people who see it will only read half of it 🙂

Still all in all it makes us look like big game hunters rather than them looking like paper bears

    • SamSooner says:

I thought the refs conspired against OU on some of those calls. Yes, the boys earned some but I saw on more than one occasion the refs seems to be congratulating and smiling at Baylor players. One patted a player on the a** in the end zone.

  • Indy_sooner says:

I don’t want to take away from the win, I am more than ecstatic. However, if Andrews catches those TD passes, this score doesn’t even look as close as it seems. Esco, good on you for acknowledging that, because you had been calling for him to see action week in, week out. Just goes to show you that there are possibly factors, as fan, that we are not privy to that feed into the playing time

    • DCinAZ says:

You’re right, but I’ll chalk his two drops up as wet ball drops.

      • Indy_sooner says:

Could very well be…no question. Looked to me that he just had really bad angles going up and grabbing the balls. He will learn and get better. You cannot beat game-time experience

        • hushnpa says:

those type of grab it out of the air catches are hard to make in the rain ,, just because Sterling Shepherd goes out and says ‘ what rain ? ‘
doesn’t mean we shouldn’t cut Andrews a bit of slack on em ..
          just sayin .. 🙂

          • OUhound says:

            Catch the damned ball!!!!

          • RBear says:

            we won

          • Indy_sooner says:

Look, we won, I’m not anguished at all about the drops. My point is him catching those are the difference between an also-ran WR and elite. Like I said before, he’ll learn. He’s just a RS Freshman, playing in tight coverage in the rain. He ran excellent routes and I expect him to get much, much better with time.

    • Zack says:

I agree plus stoops did the classy thing at the end and just ran the clock out. Briles would have tried to score then kick an onside in the same situation trying to win by 30.
I was proud of the defense though more than anything. 3 takeaways and all the Baylor fans are calling out the oc and his play calls…who cares. The reason they ran it is probably because they knew this defense would feast if stidham passed it 50 times.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Did we not go ahead an score either of those times?

    • metzker says:

      That’s classic

    • Gary Robbins says:

He’s saying, hello this is Captain Striker speaking. First I got this flying gig because I was the lowest bidder and no experience was necessary. Second we are on auto-pilot because the other pilot celebrated too much and is passed out. Third and most important is their a real pilot on board or any idea where they keep the parachutes.

  • Indy_sooner says:

Maybe just me but having Mixon out in space seemed to open things up for Perine. Mixon’s screen play in the 1st half made Baylor respect him as a passing threat the entire game.

  • OUhound says:

Honestly, looking at this game in retrospect, I still see a huge upside. Tons of things to work on and tons of improvement to make. We have not even come close to reaching our potential. And by the way, we only lose 6 starters. Granted with Tapper, Striker, and Shep gone, that’s a lot, but talk about a huge core to build on. Next year is gonna be as or more fun than this year.

  • DCinAZ says:

All good points Jordan. The only thing about this team left that still gives me some measure of pause, is that outside of Sheperd and sometimes Neal, our other WRs are largely disappearing in games and have done so all season. It’s not like we’re playing pipe hitting secondaries every week but they’ll have to re-evaluate the WR positions in the off-season for sure now that we’re losing Shep and Neal.

    • Zack says:

I think what happened last night is they dared baker and Shepard to beat them. I’m not going to pretend to know their scheme but the throws to Westbrook last night were very well covered. Neal had a couple plays but not as much room as he’s had most of this season. I think they would benefit from more designed pass plays to the running backs though. Maybe 5 or so designed plays while having the check down option accounting for another 3-5 catches from the running backs.
I think next week will be a fun week to watch mixon get back on track. Seems like Baylor has the LBs to slow down a running game (even though perine went off) but tcu has 2 LBs under 200 pounds. We need to take them for a ride next week and just shorten the game then hopefully osu takes care of business. Bedlam would be epic if it’s for a spot in the playoff.

      • DCinAZ says:

They were definitely keyed in on our RBs all night. I was a little surprised their backers played the run as well as they did. I thought if our backs got past the first level, all bets were off for Baylor.
Seeing that they keyed in on our running game, that would tend to leave the WRs in a lot of 1 on 1 situations which I would expect them to do a better job of exploiting. But, they did a fairly mediocre job of doing that and they’ve been mediocre in several games this year even against inferior competition.

    • Zack says:

This sack was the game changer. Even though he came back and threw a td on the next drive he was rattled.

    • Gary Robbins says:

I say #7 this week, then #5 after TCU win, then #4 after OSU win. Then I expect the number 8 to be our “Mantra”.

  • Dwebb96 says:

I loved the chippiness that they played with and then backed it up. Someone said last night that Baylor likes to bully opponents at home. Last night, as a team the Sooners stood up and punched them in the mouth.

    • Zack says:

I’ve got no problem with the chippiness but the Alvarez one was a drive killer. And I don’t like what dimon did but I think that changed things for the better for our defense. Wade deserves to be the starter IMO.

  • j l says:

After the UT loss, i said stoops was incapable of getting this team back to elite status. I owe stoops an apology, as this is absolutely an elite team right now.

Ill take my crow with a little mustard please.

    • RBear says:

Good of you to admit that- I think the changes on the staff are the biggest difference, just took a bit for it to reflect in the play on the field.

      • j l says:

Absolutely. Riley’s stock is soaring right now. Hes about to get paid!

      • SamSooner says:

Yes. The staff changes are big. I can’t recall ever seeing so many position coaches getting with their players immediately following a series.

And LR, that dude is cool under fire. He seems to never get stressed.

        • RBear says:

Gotta add that M Stoops to the booth has made a world of difference as well.

          • SamSooner says:

Yeah, out of sight, out of mind. The players get to stay calm.
I can’t imagine him on the sideline when I thought he was about to explode.

          • metzker says:

            Sam you called it ty

          • Bob Edwards says:

They showed him going ballistic in the booth. Having heard Kish, Reynolds, and Cooks talk, it problem got toned down to “Coach MIke would like to ask that you not do that again.”

          • SamSooner says:

            Bob, how are you today?

          • Bob Edwards says:

Doing good, kind of sleepy cloudy day here in Alabama. Perfect day for a Sunday afternoon nap.

          • metzker says:

I am nursing a small but delightful hangover

          • metzker says:

Sam go ahead and give us the score next week

          • SamSooner says:

To be honest, it’s not the score I called for, though it could have easily been. I thought it would be 50+-20. Missed opportunities.

As for the Frogs, they are going to need Boykin or it might not get past a single digit score, seriously.

    • metzker says:

Tosses you some crow.I was well also needing crow. But by god we kicked there ass.I f we don’t make playoffs well look out next year.BOOMERRR!!!!! WHAT A GREAT WIN

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Nice post. A lot of people were thinking that and it takes integrity to own up.

Frankly, we have a new OC, new QB and new OL. BS has never lost less than 4 with a new OL. We could lose the last 2 and I would still be thrilled with the progress and convinced that OU is “back”. Beating the two-time conference champ, on their home field, is no small accomplishment.

      • j l says:

Feels good to be in title contention this late in the season, its been too long. Firing on all cylinders right now.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

  • Thomas Norman says:

This is the double-edged sword that is the Baylor offense. They have a run play and a pass play on every offensive snap. If you show numbers in the secondary, they run.

However, if you then take 4-5 guys and destroy their run game then they are hosed. You continually force the run-read and then stuff it. That defensive performance wasn’t perfect, but it was a thing of beauty. Without a couple busts we hold them under 30 and maybe better than that. Evans, Alexander and whatever three linemen were out there whipped their OL on every down. Every. Down.

  • ND52 says:

Again not to take a single thing away from the game Riley called, but how can you not credit Baker Mayfield for being the freaking play maker he so clearly is?

Best OU QB since Sam Bradford and it’s really not a close call.

    • RBear says:

Arguably better- leads by example, gutty, tough, productive, confident and articulate.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Hard to compare them as Bradford is the perfect, checks every box quarterback. However, when it comes to the intangibles I am beginning to think Mayfield is better. I think he is one of those guys that makes everyone around him better, and sometimes that makes for a better quarterback than the one who can make all the right throws.

      • ND52 says:

Let me be clear: I’m not comparing Mayfield to Sam Bradford. I’m just saying he’s the best we’ve had since Bradford. We may never see another OU QB that has Bradford’s accuracy and vision.

I caught myself thinking several times last night when Mayfield missed Dede Westbrook streaking deep: “that’s 6 points with bradford back there………….”

        • Bob Edwards says:

I understand. I am the one comparing Mayfield to Bradford. My point is that Bradford may be the better passer, but he may not be the better quarterback.

          • ND52 says:

It’s a great question to ponder for sure. I’ve always wondered how Jason White would’ve turned out had he not had the knee injuries. Or how Rhett Bomar develops if he never get’s caught screwing-off over at Big Red.

          • Bob Edwards says:

White would have been good. Bomar was a five star talent with a one star brain. My impression is that, if not for the Big Red deal, he would have found some other way to screw the team and himself.

          • OUhound says:

Its a good question. I don’t rate QB’s the same way everybody else does. In my mind the best QB OU ever had was Steve Davis, the QB when I attended OU. Why? He was not the best passer or runner, although adequate at both. All the guy did was win. He refused to ever quit. His record was 32-1-1 and two National Championships. You all can have the guy with the rifle for an arm or the great scrambling ability and I will take the guy that just has a knack for leading his team to victory. How fortunate we may be, as Mayfield appears to have all three attributes.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I agree. Given the choice between a QB who can throw the ball a mile and the guy that can get the other ten guys playing their best, give me the one that makes the whole team better.

          • ND52 says:

@OUhound:disqus Now if he can just learn to go outta bounds instead of hitting opposing defenders. It’s not like they stole your wallet son!

          • john garner says:

Bob — maybe you mean the better leader, rather than QB. Baker certainly elevates the play of the people around him, and it’s clear that he is loved by all. I know Sam was too, but I don’t recall him being as animated as Baker.

        • JB says:

Since it hit Westbrook in the hands, I’d say that was on Westbrook not Mayfield. Westbrook may be fast but he’s been a disappointment compared to the preseason hype. He consistently drops passes that hit him in the hands and his ball security after a catch is suspect. Even the catches he makes he always seems to stumble or get off balance. I’d like to see Quick play more and Westbrook play less.

  • j l says:

I hope he does. I have no doubt the internet is blowing up right now with jerks celebrating his injury just so they can be right about something.

  • OU85 says:

There are still two tough games to go for this team. However, I haven’t felt this confident going into the end of the season in a long time. I credit this to the new coaches and most of all to Mayfield. It’s not just that he is so gutsy and talented. He is a leader. A guy who you can just tell the team feeds off of. Bradford and White were amazing qbs and maybe you could argue they had more talent, but those guys never showed the kind of emotion that Mayfield does. The kind of outward leadership he displays. He never seems to be rattled. It reminds me of Holieway. He was a true freshman and every time they showed him on the sidelines he looked like he was having a blast. Smiling, walking around with a genuine confidence about himself. This is Mayfield. Add that to a defense that is really starting to help carry the team and you have a fun team to watch. I feel like this team and all of us OU fans really deserved this win. Can’t wait to see how it all ends. BOOMER!

    • Bob Edwards says:

For the first time in a while it appears that we have a team that either the offense or the defense can carry the load. If the defense can’t shut them down, the offense will out score them.

beat me to it- just found it- pretty big bust of a weekend for briles- too bad.

How many of those kids do you think Briles visited with after the game?

  • Bill Holder says:

Quit reading after…”Now it means nothing obviously see if you don’t take care of business over the next 2 weeks”. Didn’t need to read anymore because if we lose the next 2 weeks THIS game still matters to Sooner fans everywhere, and especially to the players.

    • kt-raida says:

Well then you missed a good read.

    • JB says:

I’m enjoying last night’s win, but we have bigger fish to fry than beating Baylor. I disagree with Jordan that this is as big a win as the Sugar Bowl against Bama or some other football blue blood. I was more excited by beating Tennessee on their home field. This was a big win and I’m happy as a pig in slop to get the monkey off our back by beating Baylor. That’s what this win means to me; important to get back to the natural order of things. As big as beating a traditional power? Not in my humble opinion. This game is one obstacle cleared, with 2 more to go, so that we have the opportunity to play and beat a power like Ohio State or Bama (again).

  • J J says:

Best defensive game plan & played since Mizzou & booger Daniel in the 07 CCG. Biggest & most meaningful win since at FSU in 2011….. What a night. I still can’t talk. ?

  • rphokc says:

from an LT thread concerning bu/ou fans trashing the other’s fan base……

“They call it Waco because the rapists ask their women “are you awake? Oh”

  • blaster1371 says:

Hmmm, disagree JE. This game mattered even if OU drops one of the next two. Big wins are big wins.

Thomas has become a much better safety since teaming up with Parker.

I am a Diron Reynolds believer. Those might be Momty’s recruits but Monty never coached them up like that. Whatever Reynolds is teaching and preaching those guys are lapping it up and it’s across the board. They are playing angry and are absolutley beating the Crap out of people. Tapper has come back from the MIA list, Wade is moving better than ever, Romar is relentless, and there is Walker who Herbsteoet repeatedly highlighted for his technique and strength.

    • john garner says:

Yeah, Herbie was all over Walker. In the post-game shows — College Football Sunday I think it’s called — Arbuckle did an excellent analysis of the D-Line play. Reynolds is turning into a real catch.

    • SamSooner says:

Blaster, Monty is an excellent recruiter and he also had the DL make improvement, with talent not as good as he recruited. I believe EasTex has mentioned several times how often Tapper was being double teamed.

But, to your major point, the DL is playing lights out. I agree with you there.

    • Zack says:

I think Reynolds is gonna have a “tough” year recruiting. He may only pull in 2 recruits especially if JMT is considered a tweener that may end up being a DE recruit. Hopefully he just finds hungry guys. I personally don’t care about stars in the trenches. Sure it helps to have big time recruits but finding coachable guys makes the difference.

  • john garner says:

Am I wrong in thinking we had 3 freshmen starting on the OL: Brown, Samia, and Alvarez? Wasn’t perfect but then Baylor was often bringing the house. Certainly an improvement over the saxeT loss. Everything is coming together at the right time.

    • BleedCrimson says:

Close, Brown is RFr, Samia Fr, Alvarez Soph.

    • Zack says:

Just think if samia started vs Texas we may be undefeated. St. John absolutely killed our offense by telegraphing our plays with his stance.

      • Brad Warren says:

LET IT GO. We are in better shape and position right now having lost to Texas and beaten Baylor than had we beat Texas and lost to baylor, which most expected. So, I’m really good with our position and more importantly, attitude. I don’t know if these last 5 games go the same had we scraped by texas. We are a completely different animal since that loss.

        • Zack says:

I’m not mad about the Texas loss clearly it flipped a switch for this team and coaching staff. Just making the point that samia has been a difference maker.

          • hOUligan says:

Very true. Talking heads last night brought up Shep calling a ‘players only’ meeting after texsa and asking the coaches to increase the intensity and speed of practices. Something worked.

          • Zack says:

I can’t believe they covered shep one on one so much last night. I bet he sees coverage rolled to him the rest of the way. Going to need the other receivers to step up.

          • john garner says:

Yeah, Samia is definitely a beast. As for saxeT, the old axiom that you learn more when you lose is true. We did. We learned a lot.

  • Cush Creekmont says:

All reasonable observations. As for Mixon, I think play calling and situations “conspired” against some touches for him.
A personal observation – Riley saying he made “some bad play calls” gave me more respect for the man. Overall I think he had a very fine game. A few plays did elicit strong yells at the TV, but not a single thing was ever thrown. Last year, only the couch remained and I was not strong enough to throw it.
My hat is off to both Riley and the oft maligned Mike Stoops – as a FORMER maligner, I think Mike has seen the light with strategy and more importantly with personnel – Cooks has made a huge difference.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

The series that had me screaming was in the 2nd half when we are marching down the field to go up by 3 scores. Got to the 30 with a boatload of Samaje, 2nd and 5, and then LR called 3 straight passes. Dance with the one who brung ya!

    • Zack says:

The only play call I was mad about was the 4th down screen pass (poorly executed) but that’s a play I would think you run on 3rd and 4 not 4th and 4.

      • Boom says:

Not me, late in the game and we were leading, we needed a 1st down. We were in Baylor territory. 3rd & 5 and we have to failed pass plays. I was pacing before the 3rd down say, just run and we can make 5 yards. Got pass happy or we could’ve controlled more clock and would’ve scored 3 maybe 7 to put it more out of reach. But no, they get it back and score a TD, their last one.

  • hOUligan says:

The feeling from this game is more of ‘satisfaction’, making the football universe ‘right’, again. Not the euphoria of Miami ’07, FSU ’11 or the best, for me, ND in ’13. It feels just ‘not quite right’ going crazy over beating Baylor. But under the current circumstances, it was more ‘meaningful’ than any of those games because of the position in which it places OU now. A shot at getting #8.

  • SamSooner says:

As the season progresses, you will see the best is yet to come. As I’ve said before, athletes who are in tune with themselves know when there is more to give. I think this team knows that it can truly reach perfection.

OU is peaking at the right time.

    • Sooner Ray says:

We all knew or suspected who could make plays this season, but it has been fun watching Baker prove that he deserved a chance, watching this O line grow together and improve every week, and seeing this defense start to play with a nasty streak.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

This team is gelling and acquiring an identity. They know what they are good at and it will only continue to get better. If they could put together a game where we had zero turnovers and no big penalties – wow! We could light anybody up.

  • RBear says:

Briles having some 65-odd recruits in for that game and them getting to witness OU smash ’em in the mouth is like you having a buttload of your friends over for the big Pay-Per-View fight and your TV goes out- anti-climactic at best.

Couldn’t happen to a better guy eh?

I think one of my favorite parts of this game was the Brown/Oakman matchup. The big freshman was definitely up to the task.

  • godman says:

Didn’t see anything mentioned specifically about the OL play so wondering how they did in regards to their progression and performance individually and as a unit. I rarely post here because of all the excellent posts by so many. I generally get all my questions answered and then some because of that.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

    Wow…Peyton Manning benched. Not watching that game but… 5/20 35yds 4 INTs…That’s crazy!

    • RBear says:

Should have taken Elway’s lead and retired while on top- Favre made the same fading glory mistake.

      • Zack says:

Favre still had more ability than what Peyton has shown this year. His body broke down at the very end but remember after he left GB, he was having a great year with the jets then messed up his shoulder they quickly went downhill after going 8-3. Then the first year with the Vikings he’s a 2 minute drill away from a super bowl.

    • Golfluvr13 says:

      GO CHIEFS! Love it!

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Talk about a career that nose dived in the course of one season. Hopefully he’ll hang it up after this year. Great career.

  • cdzendolet says:

So is it confirmed that Boykin is out for a little bit? I read high ankle sprain, which isn’t an easy injury to come back so quickly for. If so, TCU should be a bit more manageable, as both of their backups looked pretty iffy against Kansas

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Their freshman looked better than the second team guy. The freshman did not throw very well, but was quick on his feet and gained quite a bit running. I am certain that TCU’s game plan will be to run as much as possible. Did not work so well for Baylor, but we will see.

    • blaster1371 says:

Might still play Boykin and leave him in the pocket? He is scary accurate. His running ability gives him extra lethality. I would think an immobile Boykin is better than both backups with questionable passing skills.

  • RonBurgundy says:

I was pleased to see the nasty attitude. Baylor tried to bully and intimidate, but got it handed to them.

    • Super Keith says:

      Exactly.

Their ridiculous scheduling also came back to bite them. Once we went ahead on the scoreboard, they were in new territory. Never having been down, late in a game, their coaches had no idea what to expect, and the players had never been there. I loved every minute of it!

      • blaster1371 says:

Yep. They got punched in the face (and kicked if you want to get literal about it). Last week I was reading some stuff on Baylors site on SB Nation. Their fans thought they could win but thought OU could too. Several said OU would wilt after Coleman and Cannon took bubble screens 60 yard to the house. That Baylor oline got thier asses handed to them. Scary thing is….. I don’t think OU has peeked yet.

  • Super Keith says:

Everything that should be said about Mayfield has been said, but there is one thing that I think can get overlooked. When Mayfield is giving everything he has on the field, and scratching for every positive yard, the team sees it (especially the defense). It affects their mentality. They see their leader leaving it all on the field, and they know they can’t do anything less.

Not only does Baker lead by example, he makes everyone around him want to be the best.

I hope he wins the Heisman (and I know that’s still probably a long shot), but he’s already secured his legacy as a Sooner. I simply love the kid.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

    YEAAAAH! HAHA Giants!

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

They should’ve known better than to give Tom Brady a minute and fifty seconds. Waaay too much time for the Comeback Kid.

  • Golfluvr13 says:

I’ve been thinking about this throughout the day. I grew up during the wishbone era and it was 3 yards and a cloud of dust. But the Sooners almost always played tough defense. I remember my first day of tackle football all the guys trying to be the QB or RB and me wanting to be the MLB. I love defense. When Stoops first took over the Sooners, they had a team that played hard nosed, kick you in the teeth defense. Win or lose, the opposing team KNEW they played 60 minutes against a competitor. Last night the Sooners defense played like that. That is exactly what I have been missing with my Sooners! I am elated to see how the defense is playing. That is what has me excited!
Not trying to take anything away from the Sooner offense, Baker, Perine, Shep, & co. are exciting to watch. I just remember what it was like to watch a dominating defense play and how it just sucked the life out of the entire opposing team. That is what this Sooner team is going to do the rest of the year. Suck the life out of the opposing team!

    • Fear The Magic says:

I couldnt agree more. I loved watching our defense last night ( actually since the KState game ). Who would have thunk that a D that gave up 30+ points was playing lights out. But IMO thats exactly what they did. They dominated when they had to.

  • Oscar says:

It seems that Sterling Sheppard is the only receiver that will lay-out for a pass. The old adage is true, if you can touch the ball, you should catch it. Just say’in.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Oscar, you don’t know how many times I’ve said “you have to lay out for that ball!”

We’ve missed a few opportunities this year.

      • Oscar says:

These guys gave up their bodies to make a catch, Ryan Broyles, Kenny Stills, Tinker Owens, Jon Harrison, and of course, Sterling Sheppard. If I remember correctly, even Steve Rhodes would lay-out to make a catch.

    • blaster1371 says:

Talking about that one bomb off #11 ( just drew a total blank- brain fart) hands and Andrews? I will give Andrews the benefit of the doubt with the problems rain may have given- don’t have much of that in the part of Arizona he is from. I would put Neal in the same category as Shep. That dude has taken some shots on the shorter routes.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Stoops in the locker room, “Everyone, wives, administrators, players, coaches, EVERYONE GETS A GAME BALL!”. Classic.

  • blaster1371 says:

Another thing…. And this is perhaps me throwing in a wrinkle that is not needed…. I would like to see Riley draw up an option play in the red zone.

    • Golfluvr13 says:

I would not mind that at all.

    • RBear says:

I think his name is Baker

      • hOUligan says:

Yeah. Think Baker with the ball in his hands is OUs’ best option…experience at the goal line.

    • Daddy R says:

Zone read is an option, just without the pitch man.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

There was a play in the Baylor game, I think we were down toward the redzone, and the presnap look for Baylor against our formation looked like a speed option would have worked perfectly. Might be something we’re keeping in the bad of tricks.

      • brainpimp says:

I was thinking the same thing. Flair Mixon out empty backfield and then bring hmio across in motion. they were doing inside blitzs everytime.

  • Golfluvr13 says:

OU ranked 7th in AP and coaches poll. Still behind the overrated ND squad.

  • Stephen says:

The rain really played a big factor in the game too (against both teams). It was pouring there for a bit. Although Perine seems to be nearly unstoppable when playing in rain.

  • Kevin says:

After rewatching the game, I think there needs to be a lot of credit given to how well our D tackled – aside from a few bad angles and whiffs, most of Baylor’s yards seemed to come before contact. Granted, there were still a few busts here and there, but sure-handed tackling (not giving up cheap yards) and swarming to the ball sure looked like the Sooner defenses of yore. Even when we didn’t play press coverage we still played pretty tight coverage most of the time. I’m convinced that we probably could’ve held Baylor to below 30, had there been a few less penalties and a few less athletic plays by Baylor. It was the first time in a long while that I felt like we had some solution to the video game offense.

On offense, I was also struck by the number of times we shot ourselves in the foot with penalties and dropped passes that put us “behind the chains.” I bet the offense is going to go look at the film and conclude that we could have scored even more points…but now I nitpick, and nitpicking is for losers.

    • JrsySooner says:

You do realize it was pouring rain…but agree we should have scored at least 14 more points. Well 15 with the missed pat

      • Kevin says:

Agreed! The weather definitely contributed. Overall I believe that we had a good game plan, the players executed the plan well, and the adjustments were sound. We played solid, if not completely dominant defense. If the D-line wasn’t able to get as much penetration with 3-4 rushers, we’d be calling for MS’s head again for dropping 7-8 in coverage in passing situations.

Forgive me for saying this but Oklahoma needs to put itself on lockdown the next couple of weeks no parties no girls…. Oklahoma is famous right now everybody wants to be your best friend everybody wants a piece of the action….. the next two weeks are all about focus teamwork Brotherhood everybody needs to watch everybody’s back…. being ranked number 7 with two games left where both teams are ranked in the top 11 not to mention Baker Mayfield has to be in the top three for the Heisman is a rare and special thing

.win those two games and you’re in the playoffs by virtue of record… Mike Stoops Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley could all be selected as coaches of the year in their category

  • Mizuno44 says:

Good evening craniacs. Outside of our next task, to take care of TCU at home, there are a couple of games I reviewed today for teams ranked ahead of us. (Give me some props, I did predict Arkansas to beat LSU, and no, I’m not Jimmy the Greek). Considering Ohio State still has Michigan State (at home) and Michigan (away), I do believe they will lose the Michigan game, Harbaugh’s influence. Additionally, Notre Dame, they will lose at home against Stanford.

    • JB says:

I agree, ohio state will lose 1 of those games. I thought MSU would be better candidate to win, but Cook may not be 100% by next Saturday. Call me crazy, but I think Clemson will lose to UNC in the ACC championship game too.

    • Recondo says:

Iowa/OhSt will take care of each other. We will take care of OSU. We are in good shape right now.

  • Ed Cotter says:

I can only imagine the visitor’s list for the TCU game. The recruiting staff will be working overtime to get everything ready……and that’s a great thing. Can’t wait to see a visitor’s list later on this week. Great job Sooners and keep up the great work TFB. Worth every penny!

  • JrsySooner says:

  • JrsySooner says:

    • JB says:

Well, I won’t blow my stack and lower myself to using foul language like you. I’m not even sure what you are all bent about. Because I was trying to read a post that was difficult to follow due to a serious lack of punctuation and offered a suggestion? Every single post I make here is done with a phone too, at all sorts of different hours of the day…and periods are just another tap on the screen. If you haven’t figured this out yet, I wanted to understand clearly what you had to say.

I appreciate your service, but that isn’t an excuse for name-calling or acting like a jerk. I put my life on the line every day I’m at work too. I don’t feel the need to bring it up as a means to guilt someone if they disagree with me. I’d only bring it up when someone’s talking negatively about a LE matter from a point of ignorance (or when someone asks me what I do for a living). I also wouldn’t lose my cool because someone tried reading a post that wasn’t making any sense and offered a suggestion. My skin is a little thicker than that.

Well, I’m done with this conversation. Have a blessed day and stay safe in the face of the enemy. May God watch over you and protect you.

  • JB says:

So, anyone care to predict the BU-oSu outcome? Assuming Stidham isn’t too dinged up and the injuries they suffered Saturday aren’t too severe, I’m predicting Baylor will win. They need a big win to stay alive in the playoff picture and they have a talent & coaching advantage. I’m thinking Briles will set up the run with the pass this week, the opposite of Saturday’s game plan. I expect him to open up the playbook a bit more.

    Agree or disagree?

  • Great post, Jordan. Agree with all you said. One thing I was so glad to see was no 3 man rushes – or at least I don’t remember any. Seems like sometimes we try to use Mixon same way as Perine and I agree with you, he is a better back in space. Not that he can’t run up the middle, but better in space. For a wet night, our turnovers were great. We have handled adversity in the loss to Texas, now we need to be able to handle success and stay focused for a few more weeks. Seems like maybe we have turned that corner. I know Stoops (Bob) was probably upset the most by our players allowing the trash talking Bears get us into some poor player decisions. We have to maintain composure. Always thought Baylor was a dirty team and still do, but you have to be above that so that it doesn’t hurt your team.

  • soonerthunder says:

To your minor criticisms concerning Mixon and Andrews getting the ball more. I’ve been with you all year on Mixon and Andrews, however, in this game, I didn’t think Mixon was as effective running, and agree w/not running him more. There’s not a play that I’d want to redo and hand it off to Mixon instead of Perine (who carried 28x I believe). Also, Andrews dropped two passes, so he got his chance and probably would have gotten more with those two catches. JMO.

  • Roger Nixon says:

While Mixon did very little rushing, he caught a pass for a critical 1st down. What I appreciate most was his blocking. On the play where Orlando Brown got the PF for jumping on a man on the ground, it was Mixon who put the defender down. On Baker’s bootleg TD, it was Mixon sealing the edge.
