Some Thoughts On OU @ Ok State

Image via Scout

Wow. Just, wow.

I’ll happily admit this is the last thing I saw coming into the season. And no one on this planet is happier to be wrong than I am right now.

I said it last night on Twitter and it bears repeating. This was one hell of a coaching job AND his entire staff. Whether you thought this was coming or not, pretty sweet regardless coming off that 2014 season.

Has there been some “good luck” along the way? Sure. But you show me a team that has this kind of season who doesn’t experience something similar. Again, testament to this entire OU coaching staff for a job well f’ing done.

Let’s keep it going in that playoff!

OFFENSE

* Lincoln Freaking Riley, ladies and gentlemen.

Definitely wasn’t a fan of that first drive that consisted of nothing but passes, but after that it was virtually a perfect game called by the OU offensive coordinator.

A couple of those QB keepers on the bootleg and what not were some serious testicular fortitude type of calls. Just a brilliant performance on the part of Riley as far as I’m concerned.

* 344 yards rushing. Samaje Perine, Joe Mixon, and I’d be remiss not to also include Baker Mayfield and his 77 yards/1 TD as well. This was exactly what so many of us said coming into the game OU needed to do to win, then they came out and did exactly that.

Mixon averaged nearly 10 yards per carry. That is ridiculous.

* Another thing we, and others, said would be the key to this game was the play of OU’s offensive line and they came through in a big way. Not just because of that 344 mentioned above, but also in virtually rendering Ok State standout Emmanuel Ogbah all but obsolete in this one.

For whatever their struggles throughout the opening weeks of this 2015 season, no one can argue this unit has improved almost every single week. And at the end of the day that’s really all you can ask of any team.

* As is the case almost every Saturday, it’s scary to think where this team would be without Sterling Shepard. And while his stat line, aside from the 10 receptions, certainly isn’t the most impressive he’s ever had, he was once again THE threat for this OU team and, as usual, found a way to still get open.

* It’s one of those plays that doesn’t show up in the box score and ultimately didn’t play a role in the outcome of the game — though no one could have known that at the time, but that fake out from Dede Westbrook on the Ok State DB that led to the long Perine touchdown run was one for the ages. LOVED that reaction shot the TV broadcast showed from Stoops acknowledging it, classic.

DEFENSE

* It’s crazy to think OU didn’t record a single sack in that game considering how much time Eric Striker (especially) and others spent in that Ok State backfield.

Which is also a testament to this OU defensive line for once again stepping up in a big spot and dominating the line of scrimmage.

Oh, and also, Charles Walker is not human.

* I’m writing this still on the postgame high of victory so I could be completely off base, but on my live viewing of the game it sure felt like Jordan Evans put in one hell of a performance. Felt like he played a big role in stopping the OSU run game and was really popping pads all night.

* A tale of two extremes for Jordan Thomas and Zack Sanchez in this one. Thomas was obviously outstanding for most of the night, most notably with the two INTs, one of which he took back to the house. Meanwhile, Sanchez had arguably one of the worst games of his OU career.

Look, I’m not going to pile on Sanchez. The guy has made a number of big plays during his time in Norman, almost made another Saturday night was a near pick six, and for any corner with his salt, you’re going to have to take the good with the bad. Guys are going to get beat, it’s the nature of the position. He’ll be fine.

* But really the defense as a whole. And credit to Mike Stoops for making the necessary adjustments well before halftime, because after those first couple of OSU drives things were not looking pretty. The rushing three (or four) strategy combined with playing your DBs 7-10 yards off against a QB who really can’t throw was, shockingly, not working. But again, M.Stoops adjusted and the OU defense quickly took control of the game.

We said coming in that Ok State’s entire offense basically consisted of heaving the ball down field hoping for something good to happen. And even with J.W. Walsh, filling in for an injured Mason Rudoloph, providing the mobile QB threat that has thwarted so many OU defenses in the past, the Sooners still managed to lock things down.

It’s really a testament to just how much this entire defense has improved from a year ago.

SPECIAL TEAMS

* Welcome back, Mr. Ross! Well, at least for that one return. But, still, that one return was pretty damn sweet.

* I’m not at the point where I’m worried about Austin Seibert, especially because that first field goal miss was more on the snap/hold. But there are some inconstancies that could be a potential cause for concern.

Agree with most of what you said. Seibert punting is outstanding. The missed fg was the holders fault. Everyone knows you must reverse the laces on the snap, he didn’t. So that is not on Seibert.

  • Brad Warren says:

In hindsight, how silly was your post asking about replacing Coach Stoops after Texas game? Lol. At the time, I thought you were insane but now it’s just too easy to pile on that. Boomer!

  • Tim A says:

Thank you Jordan. Great summary. So awesome to watch last night, the last 3 games, and really the entire season (Tenn was fantastic) other than the Texas game – which I quit watching in disgust anyway. So proud of the Sooners!! Only thing I will never understand is playing off the WR’s (ever) and not having Striker rush the QB on every passing down.

    • Zack says:

With the scheme we run with 3-3-5 or 3-4, you can’t rush the same 4 guys every time and since we have good pass rushing linebackers then you can send pressure from any where.

    • SoonerMagic76 says:

Gotta say, pretty much every big pass from OSU last night – going off my memory this morning – seemed like the cover guy was a good ways off his man to start.

  • tfb_fortyseven says:

While it was probably a question of being in the wrong position (not sure though), Seales had Sanchez’s number since the refs were letting each team play. In a tighter controlled game, the refs call pushing off on Seales on two plays, maybe three. But, Striker gets called for a facemask, and we get a personal foul for the hit on Walsh while going out of bounds (I cannot remember the time of each). I liked the way the refs called the game even though there were quite a few non-calls. It seemed they simply let the teams play.

    • Zack says:

On the Sanchez and non calls, it seemed to be that under normal conditions the contact wouldn’t be enough to knock him down. Since Sanchez couldn’t keep his feet under him, the refs weren’t going to bail him out in Stillwater. Maybe at home he gets one of those calls but you never know.

    • Daddy R says:

Striker also got away with a horrible face mask a few plays later, and right in front of the official…. Can’t believe that one wasnt called…

      • SoonerinLondon says:

I thought it was an ear hole tackle. It wasn’t, but it looked to me like it was, in real-time. Maybe that’s what the officials thought they saw?

        • Daddy R says:

Well, thats what the announcers thought too, but even if earhole, the “Expert Ref” they had on ABC, said either is a foul. Grabbing any part of the helmet opening, and pulling is a “facemask foul.”

    • Oscar says:

The refs didn’t plan it that way, they’re just incompetent.

  • tfb_fortyseven says:

Favorite punt of the game: Seibert’s ‘sand wedge’ that hit and died inside the five yard line at about the 10-1/2 minute-to-go mark in the fourth quarter. I’ve never seen a punt do that.

    • paganpink says:

I agree! And it looked to me that it was very much something he had practiced and that works with perfection on a wet field.

  • tfb_fortyseven says:

Favorite run of the game: Mixon’s first TD run where he reversed field (I think he even turned his back on the defense for a second), heads downfield with who else but Shake-n-Bake ahead of him who proceeds to knock down the defender and Mixon is off to the races … with Baker in hot pursuit. That play embodied the type of game our whole team played. They really, REALLY played well as a team last night … it was wonderful fun to watch!

    • SoonerMagic76 says:

Yeah that was awesome. Great run from Joe, great block from Baker

      • Stephen Dale says:

Baker got some publicity from ESPN concerning that block….Kevin Carter ( panelist) ripped the OSU defender for being blocked by a QB !

    • Indy_sooner says:

Dude is superhuman. No idea how he made that run. I also nominate that last TD run, he wanted it badly… I loved how Perine came out all the way and gave the dude a 10 second bro hug. Those two backs…

    • MrBigsby says:

Let’s quit calling him “the defender”, his name is Ashton Lampkin. Let’s be sure to use the name every time this play his mentioned, because Ashton Lampkin got put on his ass by a QB named Baker Mayfield!! Ashton Lampkin will catch hell in film room!!

  • SemperfiSooner says:

It is funny listening to espn try and find ways to down play OU for the playoff. Mark May is a idiot.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

He’s got a certain, hard-headed, faith in his arrogance that is unbelievably insulting. He must have some dirt on his employer.

      • soonersd says:

Some tv (and radio) talent exist simply b/c they annoy/piss off the audience which creates viewer/listener reaction. Mark May, Skip Bayless, Traber… all fall in to this category.

      • Martin says:

Yep, its a smug contrarian attitude that gets under my skin. Since he took over Trev Alberts’ seat, he hasn’t shared one valuable insight about anything.

  • Dick Bump says:

Nice write up, Jordan. Love your enthusiasm.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

    A November to remember!

  • tfb_fortyseven says:

Favorite Striker moment: Pushing his defender into Walsh in the 2nd quarter forcing the QB to throw a bad ball which was picked off by Thomas (7) and returned for a TD. That boy is gonna change the outcome of a game multiple times in the NFL.

  • Kevin says:

I think many, if not most, of us, are going to be eating crow until the new year. What a year! Phenomenal coaching, outstanding playmakers, and a little sprinkle of good luck.

Every week Lincoln Riley seems to look like a genius with his playcalling (notable exceptions, of course). How key has it been for him to join the team and design an offense that has an answer to every defensive scheme while featuring the strengths of our talent? Kudos to Coach BB for recruiting and developing the O-line into a strength that has all the potential to rival the greats in the years to come. The other offensive coaches have silently developed the subtle aspects of the skill players’ game to make them complete players – combine that with the ridiculous work ethic and competitiveness of the players, you’ve got guys like Westbrook who blocks and decoys better than so many of our star WRs in the past, and Mixon and Perine blocking for each other.

Mike Stoops is re-earning his credit with me. He’s taken so much flack for the defensive meltdowns, but has done a great job of adjusting the game plan and devising schemes that put players in position to make a play. The defense is playing with swagger too, especially knowing that the offense has their back in case they give up a big play. Kudos to the position coaches, especially the new hires, for elevating the technique and play of all the players. I also want to point out how big it was for Bob and Mike to also adjust personnel throughout the season (taking Byrd out and putting in Will Johnson, for example), and for the players to look beyond playing time do what needs to be done to field the strongest defense possible.

    • Oscar says:

Mike has done a great job during the off season and this year. I do believe tho, that last year Mike did not make adjustments in a timely manor.

  • Kevin says:

I vote that we call this month Red November.

  • Matt says:

I can’t help but think of the last time OU went to Stillwater when the big 12 was up for grabs for both teams and OK State couldn’t stop anybody running the ball…last time, we know what happened. This time the OC actually took their weakness and exploited it.

    • Kevin says:

I have to admit, I was a bit nervous in the beginning when we started out with 5 straight passes…seemed like LR was channeling the spirit of Josh Heupel.

      • tfb_fortyseven says:

My take is that he needed to do that to open up the run game. How many times do we see OCs come out in the first series and try to establish the run game by running up the middle or off tackle? I really liked it that he tried to pass each play early … I believe it set the tone of the night by keeping the osu defense off balance.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

Exactly. It’s not like we didn’t have receivers wide open during that drive. OSU was trying to take away the run to start the game, so you take what is there. It’s not like we didn’t have success throwing the ball last night too. We did.

        • WilliamJack says:

Totally agree. I was looking for Perine off of Left tackle. I got faked too! Kudos to Coach Riley!

      • Rene Goupillaud says:

I think the game plan was to surprise oSu who expected running since 1) they don’t have a great run defense and 2) weather conditions.

  • Kevin says:

I think Mike did a great job of calling Striker to delay blitz/fake the blitz on almost every down. Striker totally got into that O lineman’s head.

How much are we going to miss those seniors?? They have played lights out this year. Hopefully the guys waiting in the wings will step it up.

  • Jason Vos says:

We need to scrap the 3 man rush except its like 3 & 15 or more

    • SoonerMagic76 says:

Doesn’t seem to go our way very often

      • SoonerfanTU says:

It works more than our fans notice, but they only seem to notice the times we do it and it doesn’t. We only rushed 3 several other times last night, and it worked out just fine. Keep in mind those first couple of series, we were still trying to feel out Walsh, as OSU went outside their normal offense a bit. And after that, OU was playing a bit (especially in the 2nd half) of a prevent defense. Or at least, playing a little conservatively. Only way OSU was coming back was if he gave them big play after big play. Tough to do that with 8 in coverage. But like every other game, you have to mix it up. You can’t do the same thing every play, or it’ll lose it’s effectiveness.

        • SoonerMagic76 says:

          All good points

        • Daddy R says:

Yea, you could tell Mike was hesitant to switch at first, probably because he, along with everyone else, was unsure just what they were doing with Walsh. “Was it just a senior night thing?” “Is Rudolph really not playing?” So it appeared Mike just stuck with original gameplan, until he realized Walsh is really playing this game. Then, the blitz was on!!! Great adjustments.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

I haven’t watched much of ‘bama this season, but what little I have seen, their QB doesn’t look very mobile. So, can you imagine running that damn 3-3 against them? (assuming we play them at all) We’d get slaughtered at the POA. However, I do like showing that look when the opposing offense comes to the LOS, then shifting to a 4-2 by bringing one LB to the DL. The 3-3 is supposed to be good for a very mobile backfield (QB included), but it WILL NOT WORK against Henry and ‘bama’s power run game.

      • Brad Warren says:

I’m sure of two things. First, we wouldn’t line up that way against Bama. Second, they have 0 offense other than Henry. No passing attack whatsoever. Not worried at all about them. Really not worried about anybody playing like this.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

Other than their TD’s be down, their passing stats aren’t far off from the year we played them. And that Ridley dude is pretty good at receiver. We’d definitely have to stop the run first, obviously, but they aren’t sitting there with a passing game as bad as a KU, or ISU, or KSU. It’s still solid.

          • blaster1371 says:

That’s my assessment. Their bread and butter is the run game but they can pass the ball when they need to. Bama QB showed some mobility in that scramble and TD pass on the highlights.

        • tfb_fortyseven says:

You forgot the UT game. We lined up in that 3-3, and they ran all over us. So, you’re saying Mike made a mistake at the RRS? I don’t think he did, I believe he believes it is a good defense for some reason or another. I really hope you’re right, but we’ll see … he certainly used it last night.

          • Daddy R says:

I bet Mike wishes he would have adjusted during the UT game and started blitzing like we have lately… Next season, I think you see us blitz the hell outta UT.

          • Kevin says:

I seem to recall Mike saying something to the effect of “I regret playing that scheme against Texas.”

        • Oscar says:

Bama’s QB had some very nice throws yesterday.

    • pag says:

Yep. i hate the 3-man rush. DBs nowadays can’t put their hands on the receiver so they can’t cover them for so long. With 3 men rushing the qb is gonna have all day to throw, eventually someone will get open, most propably for a big gain.

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

    85-18-7.

OU’s longest win streak in this series (19) more wins than OSU has total (18)

Little sister will always be little sister

  • Daddy R says:

Absolutely LOVED the qb keeper call on the Naked Boot. That is a play, that although Ballsy, is fantastic when used correctly, and that situation was PERFECT for it. So happy we have a coach who will call the naked boot from time to time. Talk about keeping a defense honest…

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

Nit picking here: Baker’s stance right before the snap gave him away. No one on the osu defense picked it up, but his stance – with the left foot all the back – showed me immediately that he was going to run. Just a nit, and YEAH, I loved that play call and Baker’s execution. Man, that was a fun game last night!!!

      • Daddy R says:

He may have given it away a little, and hopefully he fixes that..but considering we havent really run that play much, if at all, then there was no way the Defense could see that… As was apparent when the play started..lol

      • Boom says:

Sometimes you put your foot way back for a quick slant too. Doesn’t necessary mean a run.

      • Oscar says:

Lincoln also gave away the ballsy call, because he was scratching his.

      • Rene Goupillaud says:

He stood that way for most snaps when Perine was lined up to his left.

      • brainpimp says:

If the Defense is watching Baker’s foot placement when the ball is snapped, the play is over already and we won.

    • Daddy R says:

It certainly has been “The November Reign!” (mine..)

Or another that I read and liked from a fellow TFB’er

      “remember, remember, the CRIMSON November.”

      • Spitting Bull says:

Red November. Simple and a throw back to the last Natty season, Red October. Very similar run.

        • Daddy R says:

Cant use the same one. Must. Be. Original.

Plus, I always think of “The Hunt for Red October..”

          • Spitting Bull says:

OU=tradition. Some things remain the same. I do like the Crimson November though. Red November just sounds like murder. That’s what happened last night in Stoolwater. MOIDER I TELL YOU!!

  • Hotrod33 says:

That run by Perine where Westbrook took his guy and the cb thought it was a pass play was pure classic. I was wondering what that dude was doing. Hats off to Dede for playing it off as a pass play. Aside from the first couple of drives on defense, overall excellent game. I have been telling people that the cowgirls were not that good all season, just had a bunch of luck winning those games and they couldn’t stop the run at all. Baylor and us both did it and look what happen. Also, we played a clean game on both sides for the most part of the night. We kept our emotions in check and no holding or personal foul penalties. The oline has continued to progress and will be key in the playoffs. There is something about this team that is special and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next couple of weeks and see who we play.

    • Daddy R says:

It is soooo much fun beating the pokes when they think they are good.

      • tfb_fortyseven says:

I’d upvote this a million times if i could …

      • OUn8v says:

Most pokes don’t know squat about football.

        • Hotrod33 says:

Well, they proved that last night with the guy and his reindeer and nice and cozy. swinging that paddle. I bet he told his friends after the game I’m using the paddle on my reindeer and we are going to get it on. LOL!!! It looked like he got it on during the game. LOL!!!!

          • blaster1371 says:

My father-n-law made a comment about that guy to the effect that “was just wrong” ….then he added “one would have expected a sheep to be in front of him”. He is a former Baptist deacon…I about shot my Dr. Pepper across the room.

          • Oscar says:

It did look rather……………..well, he should have put a cut out of Madonna’s face on the horse.

          • Daddy R says:

At this point in her career, the reindeer might be more attractive…

      • Oscar says:

Don’t be so hard on them. They are a very very good high school team. 🙂

    • blaster1371 says:

I have to respectfully disagree. OSU is a pretty dang good team. OU is just head and shoulders above them. I figured OSU to be about 8-4 this season and maybe fourth in the Big 12. I hope they do well in their bowl game and win big.

      • Rick says:

I’m feeling the same way. OUr team beat a very good team last night. They didn’t play badly, we played very very well. One thing to keep in mind about oSu is they are returning 18 of 22 starters next year.

    • Rene Goupillaud says:

It’s the little details that make teams great.

  • Kevin says:

So OU has won 55 games against AP top 25 teams in the Stoops era. Apparently LSU has 57 during that same span. What say we tie it up this year and take the lead next year?

  • Daddy R says:

Meanwhile, how about that last second win by Stanford!! Bury the Irish!

  • OUn8v says:

Charlie Strong, while drinking his first cup of coffee today: “How in the hell did we lose to Okla. State?”

  • Boom says:

    13 – 1. When both OU/OSU are ranked in Bedlam, the series is 13 – 1.

  • OUn8v says:

I just read some earlier comments where some are already worried about stopping Bama. Dayum !! I’m still dancing and believe in this team and it’s coaches. I didn’t want Mike and Kish to stay, but changes were made all across the team and those changes brought about success….and a championship.

  • Rene Goupillaud says:

First, no one was wrong who was critical of the way OU played early in the season and especially in Dallas. I can recall complaints about play calling, the offensive line blocking, poor tackling, too little blitzing and the soft coverage scheme. What they needed was the slap in the face Texas gave them. To make my point, remember during the first 4 games the most positive statements were about Seibert, as the offense sputtered and the defense had lapses. During November, it was the kicking game that struggled (not all Seibert’s fault.)

That embarrassment in Dallas kick started the staff and the players. I think they knew they were good, but didn’t commit to reaching their potential until they left the fairgrounds. Their rebound makes the season special, potentially as memorable as 2000. Riley stepped up as did Mike. This may be the best balanced team we have had, we can beat you passing, rushing and defending.

This team has the togetherness that you see in champions. They have the character and leadership you see in champions. Everyone contributes. Trevor Knight and Frank Shannon handled their situations with dignity, total team players. Austin filled in for an injured Sanchez. Then you have Jordan Thomas, Dimitri Flowers, Charles Walker and Stephen Parker showed a bright future.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

The offensive line seems to have gotten better. I’ve watched Darlington for some time now, this season. He appears to be a liability blocking. His feet are slow and gets pushed around a lot. Clemson and Bama would give Ty fits.

  • ellisbr says:

there’s no reason why on espn.com I should have to scroll down the page to see anything about OU. Huge statement win, won the big 12, contending to be the #1 seed in the playoffs, yet Les Miles, Alabama, and coaching changes are all bigger news that this……pathetic. Keep disrespecting us, we’ll show the world…BOOMER!!

  • paganpink says:

Great write up, Jordan! I do have to say I disagree with you on our opening series, though. I was cheering the fact that Lincoln Riley knew that the Cowboys players and their coaches along with the talking heads had declared that we must run, run and run again, so he came out passing instead knowing that with each succeeding pass they became even more convinced that the next play just had to be a run! Wonderful to see the teamwork and camaraderie among our guys. I do wonder if other teams see Sanchez’s tendency to lose track of the ball as a weakness they can take advantage of. And I hope Mayfield watches out a little more as he is taking big shots and other teams try to take him out of the game. I think Siebert will be fine and his flop shot punt is something he has practiced that is really amazing!

    • Zack says:

And I think Neal dropped a pretty easy pass that would have got us a first down around or inside the 20 on the first drive.

  • blaster1371 says:

One adjustment I saw MS make in the second half that may have gone unnoticed was where he placed Striker. In the first half Striker would line up behind the d-line (like a traditional inside backer) and run rush by looping around the DE. I could see how this was supposed to keep the OTs guessing where Striker was coming from but it left the middle of the defense vulnerable to run by Walsh, which he exploited a few times. MS put Striker back on the edge and mixed up his blitzing and dropping back into coverage from there.

  • sooner44 says:

Boomer!! Loved that all 3 quarterbacks had grown the Fu Manchu staches. Classic

  • SoonerfanTU says:

The good news about Sanchez and any weakness he may have going forward is that we probably won’t play another team that can take advantage of it. Maybe Clemson. But Bama, Iowa, and MSU don’t really have that type of offense, or that type of QB/WR combo.

Maybe we can scrimmage osu again in a couple of weeks? Not sure I can wait 5 weeks for the next game.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

He was in great position on all those big catches and slipped or was pushed down on each.

      • Oscar says:

The first one, his shoe just slid out with no traction. Needed better turf cleats.

        • Bill Holder says:

He definitely was in position on most plays but went down with minimal effort on the receiver’s part. What really disappointed me, was on the one play he made no effort to tackle the puke after the reception. I know I’m in the minority , but I see Dakota Austin as an improvement over Sanchez. He has proven in when he had opportunity. Sanchez usually comes up with a pic that deflects the criticism of him.

    • Zack says:

We also won’t play in those type of conditions. If we go to Miami I think they have an open stadium but if it rains, it won’t be 30 degrees like last night.

      • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Rain is unlikely this time of year in Florida. Gets pretty dry. The stadium in Miami Gardens is open.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Scrimmage OSU again. LOL. That it was, my friend.

    • soonerinks says:

Sanchez is undersized and does not have great speed. BUT, the guy plays with a ton of heart and his teammates love him and he is definitely a ball’er. Love the kid!

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Is there a better RB tandem in the country than Sam and Mix? No. Is there a bigger playmaker at QB than Baker? No. A better clutch receiver than Shepard? No. A better LB pass rusher than Striker? No. A more exciting, resilient team than OU? No. I cannot wait to see the guys finish what they started.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Heisman – I have a bad feeling it’s going to go to Henry. He had a good season, as did Baker. I think Baker deserves it though, as OU couldn’t just plug and play another QB and get the same results, while Bama could replace Henry with any good running back and get similar results.

Biggest thing working against Mayfield is probably the short game against TCU and our dominant rushing attack and blowout against OSU. He just didn’t get a chance to accumulate enough stats (passing) IMO to get past Henry in the minds of the voters.

Hope I’m wrong. At least he is all but assured to make the trip to NY.

    • Zack says:

Fine with me if baker gets snubbed. Keep that chip on his shoulder.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Clemson loses next week, Bama to 1 and OU to 2 in the Playoff rankings. Both teams win their first games. During the coin toss before the Championship game in Arizona, Striker looks to Henry and says “You got my boy’s trophy.” And OU rolls to #8.

        • soonerinks says:

Deja Vu (sp) all over again

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

          Torrance pt II.

        • paganpink says:

There you go! I had the same thought about our defense using it against Alabama. ESPN and the voting totals seem to indicate they have already decided for Henry, yet Mayfield has far more impact to his team and to college ball. I can’t help but believe that Perine would have had far more yards then Henry does, even without giving him the ball 48 times against crappy 5 loss teams, while running behind their huge offensive line. And for that matter even Mixon might have beaten him as well!

    • Oscar says:

I have not seen any of Henry’s runs that are more impressive in power and moves than those displayed by Perine this year.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I know. But in 2013, Henry ran all over us. Respect for all, fear of none!

        • paganpink says:

We ran all over THEM is what I remember.

        • Brad Warren says:

Lol, he had 8 carries for 100 yds, most of that on the 45 yd TD run. Bama as a team had 35 carries for 129 yds. So please stop with that nonsense. Also, this version of OU is tenfold better than that ’13 team and Bama isn’t as good.

          • Bill Holder says:

If Saban had used Henry correctly against us, feeding him earlier in the game, that game may have had a different outcome. It was evident we couldn’t stop him, but getting so far behind he had to throw the ball when he didn’t want to.

          • Brad Warren says:

Hypotheticals are SO ridiculous in sports. You can make an argument for something that should’ve/could’ve happened in every game. Bottom line is, it didn’t happen. Waste of time.

          • Bill Holder says:

Man don’t let it upset you…it’s just a topic for conversation. I fully realize the difference in could/should. If a bullfrog had wings he wouldn’t bump his arse every time he jumped.

          • Brad Warren says:

Not upset at all. Would take alot to do that after last night. Just people say well if Murray plays against Florida, we win. If I had went to class and never touched drugs or alcohol, I’d be a doctor. I just prefer reality.

          • Bill Holder says:

            We’re good brother

          • sracer says:

That’s exactly my thoughts as well.

      • Zack says:

Henry has plenty of power and is faster than most backs. The moves aren’t there but Alabama is a downhill team. This year we would be better equipped to stop their run while not being as vulnerable in the secondary. Plus their top 3 receiver that year were better overall than what they have now.
I hope we get bama and do the same thing we did 2 years ago.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

He’ll go to NY, but Henry will win it. espn already crowned him.

    • soonerinks says:

I think Henry will win the Heisman but I wouldn’t trade Baker for him. Besides we have a RB just as good as Henry (I actually think Perine can do more things than Henry).

      • Daddy R says:

Perine def can. Perine is a much better all-around back, as is Mixon. Henry just plays for Bama.

      • Martin says:

I think ESPN ruined their Heisman cred when they crowned the ‘Legendary’ Fournette in mid October. LSU had the best $EC RB… not Bammer. Giving Henry 45+ carries/game inflates his rushing stats as much as giving Mayfield 70 attempts a game.

    • Rick says:

I agree with you mostly, with an exception. Mayfield seems to be a player that does what is necessary to win. I don’t know if we would have been more successful if he had a 400 yard passing game. He threw effectively, he ran well, he protected the ball, and he threw one hell of a block opening the field for Mixon’s TD. Very heisman worthy in my books.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

The people voting aren’t going to watch every minute of every game. Maybe they should, but they aren’t. Stats is what they are going to base their vote off of, and Baker’s probably needed to “pop” off the stat sheet a little more than they do. I don’t disagree with anything you said, I’m simply noting how the voters have historically voted.

        • Rick says:

I agree they will look at stats, that’s why the ID is posting all of the graphics about where BM’s numbers compare to both OU and recent heisman QB’s who have won. His numbers are right there.

    • OUhound says:

Henry is a fine back. Personally, I feel the Heisman should should go to the player that most positively effects his team in combination with personal accomplishments. Hard to measure though. Baker would have to be way up at the top of the list.

    • Daddy R says:

Yea, the media is all over Henry’s nutsack. He did have a good season, But Baker does have some damn good stats, wins, and certainly PLENTY of “heisman moments.” And the way his attitude affects (and infects) the whole team, coaches and players. Henry can in NO WAY compare to that. I think Baker will endear to many of the Heisman voters, and I think/hope he has a fair shot… But you’re certainly correct, if its up to ESPN, Henry has already won it. Would be nice for Henry to put up another dud in the sec championship game.

  • OUhound says:

I have nothing but good things to say about last night. I am still completely puzzled with the Horn game though…..and even more now. I just does not fit at all into this season.

    • soonerinks says:

I don’t remember the Texas game this morning. What happened?

    • Brad Warren says:

It does fit. It’s a big part of it. Who’s to say if we squeak by texas, all of this happens. Let it go. It happened. It’s over. We’re Big 12 Champs and playoff bound.

    • Daddy R says:

The whorn game to me, has become nothing but the springboard/slap in the face, that Stoops and this team needed. I’m actually happy it happened. If it hadn’t, I’m not so sure we reel of those 7 straight (hopefully 9!). That game pissed us off, as a fanbase, and as a team, and the team finally responded the way we have all hoped they would.

  • Josh says:

Damn it feels good to be a Sooner!

    • Boom says:

And to make things better, this isn’t a one year fluke. I see several years of domination in our future.

      • Stephen Dale says:

depends on the QB following BM……either Kendall or Robison will hopefully be ‘the real deal’ ……

        • soonermusic says:

Riley will recruit guys to his system, and will get guys who, like Baker, have played something similar before. That will up the percentage for success.

          • SoonerSpock says:

When you consider Baker’s play making ability, leadership, toughness and ability to step up at critical times it is not likely we replace Baker without taking a step back. Not saying we cannot replace Mayfield with a quality QB but Baker has skills that we have not had in a QB during Stoops era.

    • M Shuster says:

How much fun would it be to add a Clemson helmet to this image?

  • SamSooner says:

Jordan/Super K, to show the kind of championship caliber talent OU is putting on the field, I tried to put together a list of players who’ve won a high school championship. I ran out of time yesterday. Is that something one of you could put together? Can you do this for the players getting major playing time?

  • JJSoona says:

Anyone got a good hangover cure?
    Euphoria is fine.
    Hangovers suck.

  • KellyB says:

There was an excellent shot at the end of the game with Kish and his linebackers. For all of the noise, Kish really has done well with Striker, Evans, Bond, Dominique. I’m excited to see Ricky and McGinnis come into their own

    • soonerinks says:

Kish took a lot undeserved abuse. The guy can absolutely coach’em up. Took a while to get any recruiting momentum but that has definitely changed. Count me as a fan.

      • JB says:

I didn’t doubt Kish’s technical knowledge, I doubted his ability to recruit, especially since there were LB coaches available when we hired Kish that were proven recruiters. That’s not to mention that he didn’t produce in recruiting until this recruiting season and last. But what production he’s had lately! If he lands Caleb Kelly, he deserves a raise or one hell of a giant bonus! I tip my hat to the man.

        • soonerinks says:

          Yes Sir.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

Bob likes consistency and unity though. Shannon was a name a lot of OU fans through out there. Guess who is up for a HC or DC job this offseason? Shannon. Would have done OU no good to have hired a guy like that that was looking to move up the following year.

        • Rick says:

What people tend to forget is that when he got to OU (as LB coach), the brothers decided to go with a 4-7 D, doing away with the LB’s using only safeties and DB’s. That was not a Kish error, that was a schematic error on MS. He admitted as much as a major mistake on his part. Recruits didn’t see LB’s on the team and were scared off by the prospect. Kish has done an exceptional job with the LB’s, they exemplifiy LBU. He has begun to climb into the 21 century and started an effort at Twitter. He’s getting better at that too. Adapt and conquer.

        • Scott says:

Kelly is already a Sooner , just need to land Mique

  • OUhound says:

I know that we still have business to take care of this season, but looking ahead, even with the loss of talent in Shep, Striker, and Tap, we are going to be one powerhouse to deal with next year. Talk about a core to fill in slots to…..

    • Daddy R says:

Yessir! And just imagine if Baker somehow gets that lost year back… Scary proposition for the football masses.

    • Zack says:

I think we have to find a couple big playmakers at receiver. Seems like we should have guys who could make that step but you never know. OL might struggle early on but the tackle positions should be even better. My guess is Alvarez moves to center and they start 2 new guys at guard, keep an eye on Evans who isn’t getting a lot of talk but was considered a very talented tackle, may have to play guard to get on the field, same with frison if he stays out of trouble.

  • EasTex says:

Sooooo, did I miss anything? 🙂

    • soonerinks says:

I’m pretty sure I woke up with a smile on my face this morning.

    • SamSooner says:

Baylor is playing for nothing next week. They might throw in the towel.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

UT might actually have a shot against their 3rd string QB.

        • SamSooner says:

As much as I’d like to see it, I can’t root for the horns.

          • Rick says:

            I’ll be rooting against Briles.

          • JJSoona says:

Is there a way for both to lose?

          • SoonerfanTU says:

UT still wouldn’t be bowl eligible, but it would give them wins over OU and Baylor in the same season. Baylor would have three losses, and get knocked out of the Sugar Bowl, and I assume OSU would take their place.

Tough call. Probably hope Baylor wins an ugly, low scoring game.

          • SoonerSpock says:

From a recruiting perspective probably better for OU that Baylor lose. From a hate perspective its a push. I’ll just wait until the game starts and see where my heart leads me.

          • Boom says:

I get it but UT can’t go to a bowl game with a win. That said, I hope they beat the crap out of Baylor and put them back in their place.

          • EasTex says:

Actually, some 5-7 teams will be bowling this year. If the wHorns had an impressive win over baylor it might push them over the top. Personally, I don’t want to see the wHorns getting all those extra practices for their young players.
*Edit= Oh and I hate the wHorns.

          • Hotrod33 says:

I don’t either. Better for them to lose so they can’t get them for sure. Let them lounge in their misery all winter long.

          • Boom says:

I get it but I can’t stand Briles. I used to respect him until I learned that he sold his soul to the devil.

          • DrewChubbs says:

Baylor sold their soul long before Briles got his call. Their basketball program set the precedent.

          • Scott says:

Baylor is at home and will destroy texas , texas hasn’t improved at all this year so I doubt they start improving now.

          • Wilson says:

Talk to a few horns fans and all they could say is..”we beat you guys, that’s all that matters.” I said “so if we win the championship, does that make you co-champions?” They actually had the Christmas balls to say “yes”! Arrogant to the end…I hope Baylor beats them by 8 TD’s and 4 field goals…lol

          • Cav66 says:

Toilet Bowl vs. Baylor and bottom half of the Big XII. ‘Nuff said.

          • DrewChubbs says:

Nah…let Baylor win. Keep ’em in the top 25 to boost OUr resume. Plus, screw the whorns.

          • Stephen Dale says:

right with you SS……..I hope Baylor stomps a hole thru the Horns…don’t want there to be any chance for the Horns to ‘go bowling’ at 5-7….Texas will look much better at 4-8 !!

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Doubt it. Briles is bent on beating the true bloods.

        • SamSooner says:

Well, I don’t know if I’ll bother to watch any college football next week. It will be a game time decision.

    • Big Higg says:

Back where we’re supposed to be

  • Brad Warren says:

I went to Academy at 9:30 this morning to get my Big 12 Champs hat. No gear at all. How weak is that?

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Hope Memphis doesn’t come after Riley. He’d be a great fit there (from a Memphis perspective). My guess is they inquire, and Riley either tells them no, or tells them they’d have to wait until after the Playoffs, which might be a deal breaker.

And before anybody says he should wait for a better job, I’d ask, is it better to go to KU/Indiana, where it’s next to impossible to win, or better to go to a place like Memphis, win, and get offered that next job at a place like VT? There isn’t a right or wrong answer, and I don’t think Riley is in a hurry to leave or move up, but we don’t know what his goals and desires look like. Just pointing out that he’d be a great fit there.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I don’t think you move from OC at EC to OC at OU and backdown to HC at a Memphis. He will want a job with a big boy team.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Disagree. Riley might not do it, but that is a career path MANY have taken.

TCU is about to lose one of their OC’s to NT it appears (I forget which one).

        • Zack says:

If Riley is smart he stays at least another year or 2. Prove that he can do it year after year at a big school. I don’t know that he should wait til Bob leaves, what if Bob wants to be here for 25 or 30 years?

          • SoonerfanTU says:

Yeah, I think he should stay and will stay. I just think Memphis will at least inquire. There are many ways to get a top HC job. Going to Memphis and succeeding is one. Staying at OU and having more success and learning from a great HC is another. If Riley were a little older, I’d say he might be looking to move up faster. But he is still what, 32? He has a lot of time. He should stick around and learn from Bob how to run a program.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yes, there is a lot more to running a program than just being an OC. He needs to take some time to learn what all is involved in it. But sometimes the guys jump for the gold before they are ready. I think he is smart enough to understand his situation. So, I’m not worried he will leave a great situation on a winning team. Plus, all the talent he has been recruiting will set him up well for future success.

          • Zack says:

Memphis is a good mid major program if you are a young assistant looking to make a jump. They’re in the middle of some big time recruiting areas. They’re not far from Georgia, Louisiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and all the other southern states. I think they play Houston every year so that gives them a Texas recruiting interest as well.
I think stoops has at least 5 years left in him. Probably more like 7 because I’m sure he will have his sons walk on and he would probably want to stay through their senior years.

          • Boom says:

I think Riley stays another year or two so he can comprehend how to run a true winning program on/off the field. Riley is learning a ton from Stoops, staff, and more importantly, how to work with an AD & President. To me, having the same vision with all three of these make the program successful.

    • SamSooner says:

If Riley is smart, he stays at OU and waits for Bob to retire.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Sanchez seemed to have the wrong cleats or no cleats at all. His footing was terrible.

  • OUhound says:

Sitting here watching recorded highlights, especially of Baker, and I’ve got a very serious question. Just how in hell does Baker drag those huge cajoles out onto the field every game?

  • JJSoona says:

Who was it that Baker leveled on Mixon’s run?

  • OUhound says:

Also Westbrook’s fake out on Perine’s run was another thing of beauty. That DB had to have been thinking ohhhh noooo the moment he turned around.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

LOVED those crossing routes last night. I think we ran more of those last night than we’ve ran all season. Tough to defend.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Sanchez will be fine.. It’s the nature of the position, from what i could tell he really only made 1 bad play trying to jump a route that ended up being a double move, luckily the ball was under thrown. The other balls he was in position to defend & either lost his footing or didn’t play physical enough with the reciever.. He’ll be fine..

  • OUhound says:

Got to give it up for our boys holding their composure last night. Got a bit chippy in spots. Also thought Baker was going to go after that DB that spun him around in the end zone after he scored, but Shep stepped in quick.

  • Mizuno44 says:

Very impressed we had 0 turnovers, and very few penalties (especially the ten and fifteen yard varieties)

  • Scott says:

You know its a good night when OSU official twitter page blocks you on twitter.

  • Scott says:

Also some more booms coming soon for OU.

  • OUhound says:

Sheesh, the Poke excuses have already started on DOK site. No healthy Mason Rudolph or the game would have been much different. These guys crack me up.

    • leatherneck1061 says:

Yep….and expect the same from some of the ESPiN talking heads. We can win it all, and they’ll still be saying things like that.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yeah Galloway, Paul Finkelbaum, Pollack perhaps…saying we didn’t get the opponents starting qbs in all three gauntlet games. But injuries are part of the game. It’s not OU’s fault if the other teams don’t have enough depth to compete. OhioSU lost to a back up, we won.

        • Scott says:

Baylor’s backup QB is better than their starter.

        • Zack says:

The backups in the big 12 are about as good as the starters in the sec I wish someone nationally would point that out.

          • j l says:

Walsh’s 24 total td would put him 4th in the SEC this year amongst their starting QB’s. The kid played less than 50 snaps coming into bedlam too lol.

            SEC qb’s suck

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Sure, he would have had an impact, but that’s the nature of the game. No team has had more critical injuriess over the past decade than OU, and no one cried any tears for the Sooners.

      • OUhound says:

Yeah, 2009 was a total disaster, and I heard not a single violin.

        • Walter Sobcek says:

Not even a teeny, weeny, tiny violin. Peterson, Murray, Bradford, Shep, Broyles, Colvin, and many many other key players went down for all or large chunks of a season.

    • Brad Warren says:

Lol, excuses are expected from losers. We would’ve whipped them with a healthy mason reindeer. It’s our time.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Does anyone see a scenario by which we could be (unjustly) left out of this playoff? I don’t see anyway they could do this without sacrificing the little integrity they have left among national pundits and fans. Wouldn’t this be a greater travesty than any of the supposed BCS judgements?

    • Walter Sobcek says:

There is no scenario. We are in.

    • OUhound says:

Naaaaa, I don’t see it no matter what.

    • leatherneck1061 says:

Not gonna happen. If anything I think we move up

      • Rick says:

I would argue, MAYBE, that with both clemson and bama winning lackluster games, OU winning 1. on the road 2. rivalry game 3. top ten rated team, should be considered to move to #1. I’m not saying I think it will happen, I am saying the thought should cross the voters and the committee’s minds at least.

        • leatherneck1061 says:

In a just world it should. But in the world we currently inhabit, you don’t get put ahead of Bama until you trounce them by a minimum of 30 points……on their field……with your 3rd string players…..after spotting them 3 touchdowns to start the game. Then, the committee might consider it.

    • Indy_sooner says:

They’d burn the CFP if that happened. ND had the closest argument. Heck, we’ll end up #2 IMO

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

I think the general consensus is that Bama and OU are the two best teams in CFB right now. Even the talking heads on ESPiN were discussing it. They couldn’t give us the nod over Bama, but they said “we were in the discussion” of being the #1 team. So yeah, we are in CFP in the #2 spot.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      No chance.

Although I could see them jumping the Big 10 champ, assuming Michigan State beats Iowa convincingly, over OU into the No. 3 spot.

But assuming Clemson & Alabama stay 1&2 respectively, that would be just fine w/ me.

  • sooner44 says:

    Awesomeness

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Recruiting is gonna blow up in the next month.

    • Zack says:

Probably within the next week. We’re about to see a ton of recruiting updates until the next dead period.

      • Boom says:

Agree with you Zack. It would be great to see the top targets OU has per position.

        • Zack says:

We will find out about Daniels on 12/18. Others may not have a time table so could announce any time. Juarez is probably going to announce at his all American game. Kelly from what I’ve read won’t make his decision until NSD but maybe he will “sooner”

          • Scott says:

He’s a Sooner , I saw that Elliott commited to Michigan yesterday. I thought that was odd

          • Zack says:

Well still doesn’t mean Daniels is done but it’s likely he’s coming to ou. We’ve made him a huge priority. I would like to know what’s going on with Bledsoe. Also think we end up with southall.

          • Scott says:

Daniels is a lock to OU imo and the same thing for Southall. I was hoping Edwin Alexander would decommit from LSU but Les Miles is coming back. Doubt any recruit will decommit from LSU now.

          • Zack says:

Well chatmann did. But Williams probably stays now.

          • Stephen Dale says:

LSU was looking for a way to disconnect from Chatman…LSU has recruited over him……

    • Scott says:

Only the beginning man , #JustWaitOnIt

    • Stephen Dale says:

Tre Massey ( JC Wr ) to Florida……Massey watched the Gators score 2 pts on FSU and committed to the Gators !!!!!

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

the coaches are going to have some fun selling the program this week… Wonder if Bob will make some appearances on the national scene during the championship broadcasts like Saban does..?

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Not a bad strategy since OU isn’t playing that day. Game day would be nice. As long as he doesn’t do any politicking like Mack Clown did…

  • Boom says:

Be great if Baker wins Heisman and says, I would like to thank Cliffy who made my decision to walk on at OU.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Who would we rather NOT give a month to prepare for our offense? Coach V or Kirby Smart? It seems almost no one stops the run better than V, but he’s struggled against the pass at times. There are no great offenses in the sec, so I think I’d rather face Smart in the first game.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yeah and the Qb for Bama is not a Watson with the feet. Coker? No. St Paul’s in Alabama. You are thinking of the no 1 QB recruit who we passed on for Justice Hansen, David Cornwell.

    • Scott says:

OU puts 70 on both of them with a 1 month to prepare for their Defense. Just load the box with 8 against bama , they cant throw the ball.

    • Zack says:

Doesn’t matter to me. Both of them would be favorites over ou so either way we would still have more to prove plus stoops wants to destroy both of those teams. I would say we would rather go against smart though because his is a check with me defense whereas venables guys will probably be better suited to play on the fly against tempo.

    • EasTex says:

Both of them may be having to deal with HC job distractions.
I remember how badly it hurt our 2003 defense when Mike got hired away before the MNC game.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

I agree with Jeremy below: Sanchez wasn’t that bad. On all three long passes, he was in the right position to make the play. On all three, he was pushed by the receiver, and on two he slipped and fell. Not sure if the cleat issue is on him or if a trainer should have done something.

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

Georgia just fired their coach. Venebles should be on candidate list I would think.

  • Scott says:

    Dre Massey committed to Florida.

  • rphokc says:

with all the turnover in the hc’s jobs and new staffs to put together, it might be difficult to keep this staff together ………..hope ou can reward the assts if there’s a money issue

    • Boom says:

Do we need a go fund me account on TFB to help raise a little money?

    • Bob Edwards says:

There is only so much you can do regarding money. We can pay a coordinator enough that he won’t leave for a lower tier FBS school and probably will. But we aren’t going to pay an assistant enough to keep him from taking a P5 job.

However, money is not the only issue. It’s about taking the next step. These guys already get paid enough that money is not their primary concern. We might lose a position coach to a coordinator position even though it is a lateral money move.

      • rphokc says:

true, just hoping they can stay intact for another yr since they seem to be building something

        • Bob Edwards says:

I agree and I think our BMD’s will make sure that they get top salaries for their positions. We will make it hard for them, but it’s just a matter of time until someone offers Riley a destination school job.

  • KatyOUdad says:

With Georgia seeking a new coach, wonder if RB Whaley is reconsidering his decision.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Tramonda is sending out a lot of OU retweets. Nice to see!

  • TDSooner says:

Anyone know if cotton bowl playoff game in Dallas this 12/31 is hosting #1vs#4 or #2vs#3?

    • Boom says:

#2/#3. if we are #4 we will be playing close to Clemson’s back yard

      • TDSooner says:

So we got a good chance playing in Dallas with a good turn out for OU fans at Jerry World. Less likely OU will drop to #4 or jump to #1 unless Clemson lose one of their final game. I live in DFW area and will definitely be there for this one!

      • BoomerDave says:

Probably, but not necessarily. Won’t know until the final rankings. The number #1 seed gets the site that is closest for them. We need to wait and see who finishes #1 to say for certain.

    • Daddy R says:

Supposed to be 2 vs 3. But I think they have some clause where they can change that around if need be..

    • Bob Edwards says:

#1 gets to pick where they go.

    • JD says:

If we are #1 #2 or #3 we should be at the Cotton..if we are #4 the #1 will play to home field advantage so we likely go to miami..that said maybe Bama becomes #1 if Clemson falls and try to make us go on the road for a possible upset and they choose the Cotton

  • OUhound says:

Was pretty impressive holding the Pokes to 3 points second half last night.

  • C.A. says:

With all these coaching changes do you think Stoops keeps his staff especially after we win the natty. I highly think Viney will take advantage of a higher profile role.

    • Bob Edwards says:

The good news is that they have only been together a year, so there will be some “maybe it’s a fluke” concerns. The bad news is most AD at these schools aren’t that smart.

      • RBear says:

I think the staff at OU knows they’re in the middle of something special and that it can’t get too much better than where they are right now. LR’s contract was a one year contract but they’re more than likely getting a new, multi-year one inked as we speak. Same would go for the other new hires- and adding Viney in some capacity is pretty high on my list too.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Agreed. We ill make it hard on them to leave. But the only way we keep Riley for more than a year or two is if we win a couple of NC’s, Bob retires, and Riley becomes the HC.

          • OUhound says:

Or Riley knows within 5 years he will move to HC at OU.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I think Riley is too smart to do the HC in waiting. When has that ever worked out well?

          • OUhound says:

Fairbanks and Switzer. That’s the only one that I know of. Nevertheless, OU is a destination school, and one of very few in the country. Who knows the calculations that goes through a man’s head.

          • Bob Edwards says:

And I don’t remember that being a HC in waiting situation. It was more a hire someone we know situation.

          • OUhound says:

I do. Lacewell spoke about it more than once.

          • Doobie74OU says:

Wasn’t Jumbo Fisher at Florida State the HC in waiting at least under the radar if not publicly. He has had a pretty good run!

          • RBear says:

            M Gundy too right?

          • RBear says:

I think he and Cale have hit it off really well and are planning on sticking around to make sure that it’s rock solid when the reigns are handed to them.

  • OUhound says:

Coaches Poll out. We moved up a notch to #4

  • Ed Cotter says:

Discussion question: With Richt out at Georgia, is Whaley still going there and if he decommits, does OU still want him provided OU takes two RBs in this class?
I say he decommits, but OU says “We got our guy….Abdul Adams.”

  • Jason Vos says:

We need to use this Mayfield blessing to make sure we start recruiting top notch QB’s. I think it is painfully obvious that when we have a good QB, Bob Stoops is Bob Stoops. When the QB is average, we get the 8-5 seasons. Baker Mayfield has provided us a window of opportunity to take our time and really recruit his a high level replacement

    • Walter Sobcek says:

True. And having yet another OU QB in New York for the Heisman presentation is as good a lure as there is.

    • JD says:

We’ve always recruited top notch qbs..both back ups are 4stars…and we all know about Baker (was he even ranked)….sometimes the stars just need to align like when Bomar got the boot and now Baker walking on

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Jason might be referring to the lesser talents of Knight and C Thomas, Hansen…Joey Halze, etc…

        • JD says:

Knight Thomas and Hansen were all 4star recruits..ironically Hansen prob fits our new offense better than the other two but its not like we aren’t recruiting top qb talent…development fell when Heuple became OC

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Knight and Thomas seemed to have been recruited for the read option, not pure passers or near Mayfield’s ability to complete the ball downfield consistently.

        • Boom says:

Disagree with you. Baker throws short to medium passes well but his downfield passes lack a lot to be desired. He hasn’t had much success with the go routes this year. I’m hoping he can improve this part of his passing but he will need better foot work.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

A few have been out of bounds…but many completed to Shep and Neal. Knight can only throw the deep ball.

          • brainpimp says:

If Baker gets the deep ball down this offense goes to the next level. it will stress the hell out of defenses.

          • Boom says:

Agree. I just wish LR’s offense passed more over the middle. I bet 70%+ is outside of the hashes. I would like to see some long post patterns. I can’t hammer Baker as he hasn’t had the time to throw those type of passes this year.

          • brainpimp says:

I would like to see that too but part of this offense is predicated on stressing the inside play of the D. They already get spread out so the D naturally likes to lineup in an inside position to start so when they need to pull off the WR they are closer to where they are already thinned due to alignment.

          • Boom says:

            Bingo.

      • Dick Bump says:

So much for the “number of stars” argument.

    • j l says:

Kendall is a high 4 star, robison is a 5 star, and casey thompson is a 4/5 star(if we land him, which looks pretty good so far).

Id say we are in pretty good shape the next 3 recruiting cycles at QB.

    • BoomerDave says:

Jason, not quite sure what your point is here. Baker Mayfield just proves how difficult it is evaluate HS QB’s. NOBODY thought he was good enough to play D-1 football. He got zero consideration from hometown UT or his childhood favorite OU. In the meantime, we took Cody Thomas who was one of the top QB’s in the country. Recruiting is a crap shoot. However, with that said, I trust Lincoln’s evaluations far more than Josh’s.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

You can’t easily measure heart or moxie. OU passed on Mayfield because he’s 5’11”. But playmakers come in all sizes, from Darren Sproles to Big Ben.

  • soonermusic says:

I thought it was brilliant the way Riley opened the game passing, absolutely against predictable tendency and effective, for two quick first downs, and leaving them guessing as to when the devastating run game might be unleashed. Contrast that with the first drive of the second half which echoed the TCU second half. A couple of runs for not much, third and long a drop by Shep, and all of a sudden it looked just like TK’s first series, playing to the score. Didn’t take long to get away from it, though. Great game plan and execution all the way through. 44 points in the first half! Wow!

  • soonermusic says:

Anyone not completely on the Baker Mayfield bandwagon needs to climb on board! I’m as big a fan of TK’s game as you’ll find, but Mayfield is fabulous. His experience in the offense has paid off huge. He knows where everyone is gonna be, and he apparently took to heart the Bob Stoops philosophy of how important “taking care of the football” is. His interception to TD ratio is still off the charts. His ability to create and be just elusive enough to turn any problem play into a potential back breaker for the opponents is terrific. Add to that his infectious enthusiasm that clearly motivates both sides of the ball. Consistent–check. Gutsy–check. Accurate–check. It’s as if Riley has done a mind meld. They seem to be so completely on the same page. Love it!

    • Walter Sobcek says:

No room left on the Baker bandwagon. We’re full up. Plenty of seats available on the Rudolph bandwagon, though.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I can’t believe his passing accuracy and how much it has improved. He is fitting it into very tight windows with some velocity.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Do you think Heupel is thinking, “Why couldn’t I have had that guy last year?”

    • KatyOUdad says:

Agree, too bad he didn’t go away with Holtz.

    • Boom says:

The beauty is, no one likes Mark May so whatever he says has no credibility.

    • Brad Warren says:

Did he say Taipei? Serious goofball. He’s entitled to an opinion but it is misinformed imo. Hopefully we play them and let the chips fall where they may.

    • Cav66 says:

…and the giant talking douchebag just wouldn’t shut up. His prediction for the Sugar Bowl was so spot on last time, he decided to double down on stupid for this year.

    • OUhound says:

Sounds like Finebaum before we smacked down Bama last time.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Guess we’ll have to prove him wrong once again. Some people never learn.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

By the way, May, Bama lost to Mississippi. Again. And I’m not sure Ole Miss could beat Texas, or anyone else in the BIg 12, other than Kansas.

      • OUhound says:

        That doesn’t count. They’re SEC.

        • Walter Sobcek says:

So true. The narrative is, they don’t “lose” games in the sec – they “beat each other up.” Thankfully, that’s starting to be revealed as a false notion.

    • Dustin says:

Did anyone see Galloway last night/this morning? All he could talk about was tcu. Then he starts praising “real football” that Iowa and Bama play. This coming from a WIDE RECEIVER.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

Two peas in a pod. Let’s just call them, “GalloMay.”

      • Boom says:

OU beat tOSU and it still kills him to this day.

        • Dustin says:

With all the layoffs at espn lately, they don’t axe the most obviously expendable personalities. I guess someone has to play devil’s advocate.

          • Boom says:

Yep. Curious how ESPN handles the SEC and it’s media in the future. It isn’t helping them and ESPN delayed the ACC network so things are a changin in the board rooms.

      • Stephen says:

Galloway is right up there John Hoover and Berry Tramel as far as people who are so detached from sports it’s pathetic

      • Boom says:

Iowa is good but overall speed of team is slow. I would love to play them

        • Walter Sobcek says:

I think they would be stunned by our ability to implement what is known as the “forward pass.” While they are still contemplating the novelty of such trickery, we blast through them with the collective TNT known as Sam & Mix. It’s over by halftime.

    • Stephen says:

I’d bet Texas would beat Bama just because I enjoy irony.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I think he is just politicking for us to not pass Bama in the CFP rankings. And to coddle the SEC viewers too.

      • Dustin says:

A few posters made a point last night that I somewhat agree with. ESPN does not want to see OU v Bama in the semifinal. They know that would mean Bama (and the SEC) doesn’t make the title game. Imagine how much it would kill espn to have to sell a title game between the ACC and the Big XII. If they can somehow get Bama to No. 1 then they get the B1G champ in the semis and basically walk to the title game.

    • soonermusic says:

Mark May has never had a clue. But he is forceful with his ridiculous opinions, and I guess that makes good tv according to some.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Four Big 12 teams in the Top 15. Not bad for a conference that everyone keeps trying to write off. Stick that in your corn cob, espn.

  • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

BOOMER!! Love watching OU stomp a mud hole, nay a s(t)inkhole in the Cowgirls last night. Hopefully that s(t)inkhole we created devours Stoolwater and all of it’s delusional fans.

  • Stephen says:

    Playoff Committee logic.
    1. Bama: because they beat a very mediocre Auburn team but they had an SEC logo to they’re legit.
    2. Clemson: didn’t look good against SC but they beat another SEC logo and have been pretty good till this week.
    3. Iowa: omg, omg Iowa is invincible
4.Oklahoma: cool win but remember Texas and TCU, we do and we’ll never forget.

    • KatyOUdad says:

Sounds like you are sitting in on the committee meeting. Lol.

    • Recondo says:

I can certainly see OU jumping Bama but it is irrelevant because the game wouldn’t change. Of course, nobody asked me my opinion. I’d have Bama outside the top 4 anyway. The correct top 4 right now is Clemson, OU, Iowa, & MSU in whatever order you want.

      • BoomerDave says:

Just for the record, don’t be surprised if Alabama is moved up to #1 on Tuesday. No way they should be left out. They are the one team I am most worried about us beating.

        • Recondo says:

They won’t be left out but they should be. Look what every other team in the top 5 has done and compare it to Bama. They had their struggles, a bad loss, a one dimensional offense, and played a D2 team (huge discriminator for me). Can they beat anyone in the country on a given day? Yes. Is their resume deserving when compared to the other contenders? No. Besides, Bama is a great matchup for OU. They run, we stop the run. They have a good D but our O can attack from anywhere. Clemson is the worst matchup for OU because of Deshaun Watson and Brent Venables.

          • BoomerDave says:

Brother, all I can say is that you are watching a different Alabama team than I and just about everyone else is!

          • Recondo says:

Not really. I agree Bama has a good D and power run game. Their passing game can’t win alone. We match up very well. I think when comparing 5 teams that are very close you have to punish the playing D2 schools late in the year. Everybody can see Clemson’s offense is much more dangerous to OU than Bama’s.

          • Boom says:

Clemson’s QB would scare me if we play them due to his running abilities. Bama is two dimensional and if we can contain their running game, we would have a good chance to win. Bama’s D is tough but not sure how they would do if we went uptempo for 80 – 90 plays. Two different styles but it would be a great game.

          • OmorganU says:

You’re watching ESPN highlights of Alabama games if you think they look dominant this year. Alabama and Iowa would be our easiest game with our style of offense. Alabama has Henry and that’s it. Much less than they had in the Sugar Bowl.

          • Brad Warren says:

Man, I’ve watched just about every one of their games. We are better. No doubt. Yes, they have a salty defense but have faced nothing like we’ll show. Their offense is pretty much Henry right, Henry left, etc. I’m not buying what they’re selling. Sooners by 17.

        • Sooner Ray says:

Bama fans are on their message boards right now talking about wanting any team EXCEPT OU because they know they are not a good match for us.

  • Recondo says:

I am tired of hearing the Mason Rudolph talk. I get the QB comments with Baylor and TCU but Walsh has won a bunch of games as a starter, was splitting time this year, and we got a pick 6 off Rudolph in his one series. Honestly, Walsh is probably the reason OSU didn’t have 3 losses going into Bedlam.

  • BoomerDave says:

Sorry guys, I know it’s easy to pick on ESPN for their perceived pro-SEC bias, but just about every ESPN analyst I’ve heard admits that the Pac 12 is the best conference, top to bottom, an analysis that I agree with. Alabama is ranked where they are because they are very, very good. Not because of some love affair between ESPN and the SEC.

    • rphokc says:

      thank you

    • Recondo says:

Bama will always get a bump from ESPN. Compare the dialogue about Bama to OU then go watch the games. OU looks better. OU is more complete and played a better schedule down the stretch. Bama gets no bad publicity for struggling against mediocre Auburn, losing at home to decent Miss, or playing a f’n D2 school. OU’s commentary is riddled with backup QB and Texas talk. It gets worse when you compare Bama talk to, say, undefeated Iowa. There is a definite bias towards teams like Bama, LSU, & Florida, the SEC in general, and Saban. It took all of 5 minutes to bury the Big12 conference title (by far the biggest event of the week) in favor of a second rate Iron Bowl and an LSU coaching change that never happened.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

There has been a bias toward the sec the last few years, some of which, i’ll admit, has been earned through their success over the past decade. But recently we have seen that their on-field performance has not measured up to the hype. It is a conference very weak on QB play. I like out chances against Bama or any other sec team.

      • blaster1371 says:

I think that love fest is growing cold. For a while the SEC was an easy pick, even a lazy one, but the last three years have proven them to be mere mortals.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

ESPN Junior 300 cornerback Jamyest Williams of Lawrenceville (Georgia) Archer was the top junior recruit in Stillwater Saturday. The four-star recruit, who ranks as the fifth-best junior corner in the country,

also made a visit to Norman on Sunday for an unofficial visit to Oklahoma.

    • Nate Broadus says:

If he came to Norman afterward, he must have some legitimate interest. What are the chances OU could pull him in at this point? Is he leaning more toward any other school, or pretty open?

  • thebigdroot says:

I have to take up for Sanchez, those refs were letting the OSU WR’s virtually rape him. They were pushing off, and pull him down with his jersey from behind.
Also- the OU fans were loud and had taken over the stadium by halftime and all the OSU fans kept whining about the refs when they had only called 1 foul on OSU till the 4th QTR. It was quite hysterical. They didn’t even know what was wrong with Mason R. I had to inform them. Come on guys, how can we take them seriously? And who ever came up with that spoof of cowboysonly.com, freaking hilarious.

    • soonermusic says:

I agree that Sanchez was getting pushed off on nearly every successful completion, and every play where someone got behind him as well. On a less slick field, I think they have a great deal less success with that.

    • Recondo says:

He got beat up a bit and kept slipping (come on, equipment managers!) but it was by far his worst game this season. I’m a Sanchez defender and he has paid me back with multiple POW performances but it was ugly last night.

  • Bob Edwards says:

So summary of last twenty four hours.

ND loses, meaning the only meaningful challenge to us getting in the CFP is gone.
We lay a massive wompin on OSU.
    We win the B12 championship.
    We are going the CFP
    We get two booms.

Result. TFB is filled up with complaints about the CFP committee, ESPN, etc.

Folks we get to settle this all on the field. Enjoy the ride.

  • soonermusic says:

I believed (and said many times) before the season, that with so many returning players, Mike was gonna surprise a lot of folks with how much better the defense would be this year. I had hopes for Bob’s return to the “air raid” but really had no expectation that it would fall into place this quickly and impressively. The coming together of the O-line and D-line’s has been remarkable.

While the announcers were critical of Sanchez’s game, and it was obvious that he slipped and/or was pushed and could have played a few key plays differently, I suspect that for most of the game, he was playing very well. There were, again, many plays where the OSU qb had no one to pass to, and that doesn’t happen if Sanchez isn’t covering. He also made several key tackles. So while he probably will hate his performance when he reviews the film, I suspect that overall it wasn’t as bad as some are thinking.

    • blaster1371 says:

Good points and I remember you saying the secondary and other parts of the defense should be better just by experience alone. Will you pick my next lottery numbers too! Please?!?!?

    • Kevin says:

Agreed. Plus, with OSU’s offense consisting of only a Hail Mary play, you’re going to lose a few jump balls.

  • soonermusic says:

I really thought there were two tackles right near the beginning of the game by OSU that should have been called for targeting.

    • Recondo says:

Absolutely. They were both obvious. Not trying to hurt OUr guys but easily outside the rules.

      • soonermusic says:

Yeah, I just found it weird that the plays that the tv announcers got the most excited about and talked about what a crushing blow the tackle was, were clearly helmet to helmet hits.

  • Dustin says:

I gotta back up Sanchez here for a bit. Now, I’m not saying he played great last night. He didn’t. But I think the big plays he “gave up” were not all his fault. A couple times were 50/50 offensive PI. Other times he was simply a victim of a horrible opposing QB. He was in great position on the go routes. Walsh can only toss up rainbows that fall 20 yards short and his receivers noticed a split second before Zack did. These weren’t back shoulder fades. These were deep balls that never got deep. If a healthy Rudolph threw those passes they would have been deeper and ended up incomplete (probably). No need to worry. Just a bad day at the office.

    • thebigdroot says:

That one in the 3rd for a TD the WR pulled him down with his jersey forcing him to fall because he couldn’t get his balance. Saw it live and then on the replay at the stadium.

    • BoomerDave says:

Bottom line, Sanchez needs to stay another year and get stronger and more physical. He got knocked off his feet twice with only the slightest of contact. Offensive pass interference, perhaps. But they were baby shoves, at best, and he just needs to be stronger and withstand those light shoves and compete better for the ball. On the other one, he was in great position and just lost his footing.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Hoops team is looking great so far today

  • soonermusic says:

It will be interesting to see how ‘Bama does when they are forced to face a real Big 12 defense, instead of those wimpy SEC ones…:-)

We should get another running back in this class with Abdul Adams. We will probably lose 4 RB’s next year. I see Perine and Mixon gone after the 2016 season.

We also need to find a top notch receiver either in JUCO or in the 2016 class for the loss of Shepard

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

      We have Rodney.

    • BoomerDave says:

Can’t say I totally disagree, but it would depend for me on the total number of ships available. We would definitely need to take 2 in the subsequent class. Personally, not convinced Mixon would or should go next season. I’m thinking he would enjoy a full season being “The Man” at RB.

      • Jason Vos says:

Joe Mixon is gone after next year 100% guaranteed

        • BleedCrimson says:

I believe that Samaje is serious about getting his degree. Unless he graduates early, I just do not see him leaving.

        • brainpimp says:

          Baloney.

        • Brad Warren says:

          Lol.

        • BoomerDave says:

No way you can make that guarantee! That’s just nuts!

        • Zack says:

I wouldn’t say 100% but definitely better than 50%. It would be wise for Perine to go as well. Fans won’t want to hear that but if he has another 1500 yard season next year he needs to cash in. Now if for some reason he gets a low grade, then clearly he should stay.

          • JD says:

I just don’t see him getting a low grade when he goes lol..hes looked fantastic down the stretch..he would be pushing Fournette for the top rb spot next year if he keeps it up imo

          • Brien Brown says:

Thing is Fournette won’t be the top RB without a decent QB teams know exactly how to stop him and any good team with solid LB’s and DL play will stop Fournette, Perine is a better all around RB when given the lanes to run through, he can run through tackles and run away from people!

          • JD says:

Id like to seem him get a few more targets (I think he dropped one last week) out of the backfield. He has shown good hands for the most part and it will def help his stock more

        • Boom says:

If he’s not evaluated high, he won’t leave. Ask Tony Jefferson as he said he wished he would’ve stayed.

    • JD says:

I fig they might try a prefer walk on this year plus AA and take two next year. They usually try to fill what they are losing per cycle and ships are tight. Wr and OL seems like the main focus on offense right now for this class

      • Brien Brown says:

I concur with your statement 100% now just like with the LB and DB spots on the D, if a top of the line RB said hey I want to play for you then we could make the room. But I think it’s more likely we get a walk on and Adams, and then next year try to find the next Mixon and Perine even if they will redshirt depending on if M and P stay or go! If I was a betting man I would put money and a lot of it on P staying and I say about 50% that M stays.

    • Brien Brown says:

I am telling you guys that we should offer Z’Quan Hogan a preferred walk on spot yes there may be more explosive backs, but think he could be a great 1-2 combo with Adams, I also think the coaching staff knows more than us, if they felt they where really going to lose 4 backs next year we would offer more. Could be some underlining information here, maybe Mixon and Stoops made an agreement we will keep you as long as you finish school and stay the course, and I think I read somewhere that Perine’s mom wanted him to be a player all 4 years and graduate. Despite the great years Perine has had so far he don’t seem to focused on the next step! But that’s my two cents for what it’s worth!

      • BoomerDave says:

I like Hogan too, but the OU staff is very familiar with him and haven’t shown much interest. Lincoln has seen him play in person as has Bob on many occasions as his sons are on the same team.

        • Boom says:

If they were to pick up another back, I would like a shifty “fast” back. 4.55 is great speed but it would be a good complement to get a 4.35 – 4.45 guy. Maybe some guy playing slot today that could be a RB too.

      • blaster1371 says:

I say the OU science department just clones Perine and Mixon. On a serious note, I’d rather see OU recruit bigger backs than Abdul or at least a balance of those scat backs and guys that are the hammer (Perine and Mixon types). It would be nice to have that versatility plus have running backs that actually add to blocking schemes and not become blocking liabilities.

    • RBear says:

Dunno- I see Perine getting an edumacation

  • Jason Vos says:

Ever wonder how explosive the offense would have been if DGB had stayed? DGB and Shep on the outside with Perine/Mixon wow

  • RonBurgundy says:

The Heisman is for the “Most Outstanding” player. Me thinks the QB position has a leg up.

Henry is a horse, but just straight ahead power and speed. No moves. Fournette is great, but can’t do squat either without holes to run thru.? The RB can be good, damn good, and the “best” player or the highest draft choice, but not the “most outstanding”. Of course the QB has the most opportunity to individually excel. So I put the various QBs ahead of the RBs. ? ? ? ?

    • Clint Lenard says:

Running Backs aren’t taken very high in the draft these days. Very unlikely Henry goes in the first round. If he does he will be in the 20’s, and that team will regret it if they do.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Mayfield speaking at the BB game right now.

  • KatyOUdad says:

Baker being interviewed on the BB game now.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Just now watching the game (thanks to Stone Cold) and that was a definite targeting on Ross that wasn’t called. How do the refs miss these?

    • Walter Sobcek says:

And another helmet to helmet on the sideline to BM. Good grief.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I saw that yesterday. If the friggin NCAA wants to protect players, it starts with the refs enforcing and looking for illegal hits. They should have been a little more sensitive to players that had issues coming into the game.

  • Great hires – all of them. Don’t know if Bob does all of his own evaluations or if he has some really good advisors, but he sure got the right guys. Mike agreeing to go to the booth was also a great move. The one move he can’t take credit for is – Baker Mayfield. What a great decision on HIS part to come to OU. Brings a toughness (like the block for Mixon) to this team that flows to everyone. Reminds me of Churchill – “never give up, never give up, never give up”. Hope there are some more of those 3 star guys out there who no body wants that might find their way to OU. Guys that WANT to be a SOONER and are willing to fight hard for it.

    • Recondo says:

Loved the block. Also liked that he lowered his shoulder against a LB on his TD run.

    • soonermusic says:

Bob comes across as the kind of guy who does research, seeks out opinions he respects, and then makes his own decision. I’d be very surprised if Mike didn’t have some input on the defensive hires.

      • I know they are really close, so I would have to agree that he did (Mike have input). The other thing I like that is going on that I am not sure was the last few years is a much more hands-on involvement by Bob in the recruiting process. Seems like he is going out of his way to meet every recruit. He did that early in his career, but I think he got away from that the last few years.

  • soonermusic says:

Looked to me like Ross ran up to where the hole was supposed be, just like always, only this time–there was a hole. Made a nifty little cut to get into the lane as well.

  • soonermusic says:

I’m looking for Dede Westbrook to have an astonishing break out game before this year’s run is over. The coaches have waxed poetic about how we have yet to see “the real” Dede, that he has mad skills. How many times throughout the season has he been open behind the defense and been overthrown either by a lot or several times, just inches.

    • Zack says:

If Westbrook does have a breakout game or 2 on the national stage, you can kiss him goodbye. That would give him the hype he wants to make a decision to go pro. Plus he may be one of the 5 under classmen that stoops puts in for an evaluation. I imagine Sanchez, walker, Evans and Dom may also be considered for that.

      • Dick Bump says:

I look for most if not all to be back next year. With an evolving offense and defense, it could be another special year.

      • Finney56 says:

I’m pretty sure he has said that he will be gone after this year for personal reasons anyway…

      • soonermusic says:

“you can kiss him goodbye” You could be correct, but there has been an impressive trend lately of folks actually paying attention when Bob explains to them the benefits of staying for another year.

  • RonBurgundy says:

OSU is still a very good team, give Gundy some credit for that, with a usual recruiting ranking barely above #50, if that, with rejects, transfers, etc.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

    CHAMPS.

  • hOUligan says:

    Yea for Samaje!!!

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

Guys, I’ve been thinking for a while about this and wanted to throw this out there. Do you think Riley has stumbled upon a superior version of the Air Raid+ that also features a power run game? I ask because that has been the traditional problem with Air Raid – like teams not having the ability to punch it in down in the Red Zone. However, we don’t seem to have that problem. Also, we have the ability to milk the clock and go power late in the game when opposing defense is tired. This version of the Air Raid seems to solve those problems. So, is this the best version of the Air Raid or what?

    • soonermusic says:

All of the truly successful versions of the air raid have a great running attack. Stoops has cited other teams with strong run games as well, although there sure aren’t too many teams with Perine and Mixon in the backfield. That’s gotta make a difference.

    • SamSooner says:

You might be right. I still don’t think we’re seeing it all. As the OL has improved, so has the offensive production. Last night was the first time I felt like they could score every time they got the ball.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

We seem to have the most complete offense and can either run or throw it depending upon what the defense presents. Also, I think we have ran the ball more than threw it in every game except for the home opener. A good run game that can go power, but yet can morph into traditional Air Raid when necessary. I think it’s a killer concept.

        • SamSooner says:

Also, think about what happens when Perine and Mixon catch passes in the flat. Any defender crashing down opens, up passing lanes for the receivers if Mayfield pumps it. This is true stress on a defense.

        • Kevin says:

That sounds a whole lot like what the Josh Heupel offense seemed to do, except that Lincoln seems to know what he’s doing a lot better.

    • Recondo says:

I think the Air Raid has been getting more balanced the last few seasons. Riley has the luxury of two NFL caliber backs to really highlight it, however. If we can slow down Derrick Henry & Deshaun Watson this version of the Air Raid should bring us a title.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Riley stumbled upon 2 RBs like he’s never had before.

    • aklibtard says:

His QB was throwing it 50 times a game when he was at ECU. I’m guessing that he thought he’d do the same thing here, but he flipped the script when he saw the type of RB talent that he had here. It sort of looked that way early on. We weren’t getting much out of our run game. Part of that may well have been because we had some new gusy at OL, but I think most of it was that LR still wasn’t comfortable with using the run game. We’ve started running a lot more than we pass at this point though. I just hope that he doesn’t now try to only recruit the classic shifty air raid RB. He needs to learn the lesson that the best way to use the “air raid” is to have the ability to just pound the ball. I hope that he’s still looking to recruit big strong RB.

    • SamSooner says:

That poor man went to the game and had no idea he would be mocked this way.
      But….he aired his dirty laundry.

Skiatook and Collinsville will be in the same district next year. Skiatook will probably be 7-3 next year and in the playoffs. our 7th and 8th grade only lost 1 game each and the 9th was undefeated. Excellent kids coming up.

  • Chris White says:

I do hope we can recruit a punter so Austin can fully focus on field goals and get a good chemistry with Horkey and whoever will be his holder. Other than that, this team is really taking form. It’s that time of the year when we really need some longer cleats but great game!

    • Zack says:

That or bring in a better kicker and let seibert focus on punting only.

      • Chris White says:

Yeah he’s very good at both but could be great if he focused on one

        • Zack says:

He’s been better as a punter so far. But he may be better than most other kickers. Hogdson obviously has a ton of power but most not be accurate enough to have won the job. I honestly wouldn’t kick very often anyways and we saw Bob go away from kicking those 45+ field goals when they have a reasonable shot on 4th down. And I think people are starting to realize 4th downs aren’t all that tough.

          • j l says:

Well, 4th downs arent so rough with one of the most explosive offenses we have ever had at stoops’ disposal =)

    • soonermusic says:

I think as a true freshman, thrown into a number of fairly pressure situations, and getting his first exposure to “the big time,” he did pretty well. I’m gonna guess that the experience will help him improve for next year and everyone will quit worrying about it. He has a pretty high ceiling at both.

Edit: Several of his misses were due to poor execution and timing on the snap/hold as well.

  • soonermusic says:

Interesting that in this spread the ball around offense 5 guys caught one pass apiece, one guy caught 2, and Shep caught 10, more than everyone else combined by a margin. Gotta believe that teams are scheming to stop him from doing that, but it doesn’t seem to matter. Add to that all the other plays where he does something significant. He’s got to be as valuable or more than any other receiver in the country.

Always have liked Dave Wannstedt, but he’s ripping big 12 for not having championship game yet nobody in room even mentions we play everybody in our conference, unlike others.

    • Recondo says:

He coached in the Big East which didn’t have a championshio game. Didn’t hear him complain then.

It’s an eastern bias from everyone in the media. Klatt has been all over the bias on all teams west of the Mississippi.

    • Kevin Burger says:

#3 team just played the #11 team for the title. It’s hard to get a better match up than that.

    • James says:

Funny how he griped about OU not playing a conference title game and acting like perhaps they didn’t deserve to be in the final four then he picks them to win it all.

      • Daddy R says:

wtf? for real? I’ve never liked his sportscasting much.. Always seems to confuse folks.. Apparently, he confuses himself too.

    • soonerjoseph says:

We (the entire OU fan base) used the same argument for years. It was always the #1 reason we deserved to go to the BCS championship game. I find it a bit funny that now the fan base is saying the exact opposite.

      • Brad Warren says:

Huh? The conference title game is fine when there are divisions and all teams don’t play one another during regular season, like big 12 south and north. But when you already play one another, what’s the point. I’m not one of the fans to which you’re referring.

      • Kevin Burger says:

It was really only ever an issue with the Big 10, who for the longest time had neither a championship game, nor had all teams in the conference play each other.

    • Neworleanssooner says:

I really thought that show was unwatchable. It was so lame I had to turn it off.

    • Dick Bump says:

I haven’t heard it mentioned that the Big 12 isn’t allowed by the NCAA to have a championship game, since there are only 10 teams in the conference. They all make it sound like it’s our choice.

I’m watching it again right now. I’ve been helping my daughter with her school project.

    • Zack says:

I have said ogbah is overrated. But he does have the numbers this year that would suggest an impact. However in the few games I watched from him this year, you expect a guy with that hype to jump off the screen (like striker) and I never saw that.

Speaking of striker, does a team take a chance on him early in the draft knowing that he is an exceptional pass rusher?

      • Stephen Dale says:

No. Striker is undersized for a NFL LB and pass defense is not his forte. He is a pass rusher extraordinare in college but lacks the bulk to bulrush NFL OL….I believe Strikers game is perfectly suited for the CFL, not the NFL.

        • Defend Colfax says:

          poke.

        • Zack says:

I kinda agree but he’s almost made himself into a similar type of player as Jefferson. TJ played better coverage obviously but the bull rush isn’t his thing anyway so I don’t know that that’s a problem.

        • SCKSChief says:

He reminds me of Demorrio Williams from Nebraska. Beast in college, really didn’t do much at all in the league. If Striker could bulk up like Terrell Suggs did (Suggs was about 225 coming out of ASU, no?), then he could have a shot. I think he’s more Williams though.

          • Stephen Dale says:

Suggs was 6-3,255 coming out of ASU…..Stiker is 6-0,225… he most likely won’t be able to bulk up enough to handle the increased weight without sacrificing speed / quickness—–his attributes that make him the force he is.

      • aklibtard says:

No, teams will probably be shy to pull the trigger because he’s a little undersized. He may not be drafted at all for that matter, but because his tape is so good and he’s been such a high character guy (i.e. you don’t have to worry about him beating his wife) I think he’ll be a day 3 pick and three years down the road teams will be kicking themselves for not paying more attention to his tape than the fact that he was 10lb too light. Honestly, I think the same thing may happen to Shepard. He’s 2″ too short so teams will pass him up early and regret it down the road. If nothing else I think they’ll both have long careers as solid special teams contributors and depth guys. Nothing wrong with that.

        • Walter Sobcek says:

A team that knows how to utilize a slot receiver (such as New England) would be foolish to pass on Shepard. Striker is a trickier fit – he’s such a hybrid. If given a chance, he’ll carve out a third down niche.

  • Chris White says:

    • aklibtard says:

Before I’d walk on anywhere I’d take the scholarship first, even if it isn’t at your dream school. Student loans are a bitch to pay back. So, if you want to walk on somewhere else you need to ask yourself if you’re willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars to play football there because in effect that’s what you’d be doing. I hope you get an offer you’re really excited about, but in the end, like the old song goes, “if you can’t be with the one you love, then love the one you’re with,”.

Kudos to you guys for spotting him a few years back.

    • Super Keith says:

They have 9 days (starting today) to recruit, and you know they’re going to use every minute of it! It’s also nice that there’s no game next week, and that there are some big time programs that do have games, which means their coaches can’t spend the same kind of time ours can, over the next week and a half, on recruiting.

      • Gary Robbins says:

With 12 commits already and probably a total of 20 here would be my next 8 that OU has a shot at.
        A. lb (1) = Kelly
        B. ot (2) = Moore and E.J. Price
        C. dt (2) = Daniels and Southall
        D. de (1) =Bledsoe
        E. S (1) = Burton
        F. wr (1) = was Dre Massey (Florida commit now) – so Velus Jones if he decommits from USC

        • Zack says:

I would add Cleveland to that list of receivers. They still want him I’m sure.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

And probably the big DT committed to Houston. If Herman leaves, all bets are off.

Would LOVE Cleveland. Maybe we have WR’s on campus that given the shot at starting, will be up to the challenge. But I still think it’s the weakest position on offense once Shep leaves. Look at the playmakers OSU, Baylor, and TCU have there. I want that kind of WR talent.

          • Zack says:

I think Herman is gonna get the Georgia job. So you also have to worry about those guys following him unless his message really was “stay in Houston” but I’m hoping regardless of who we bring in that quick, Todd, mead and Smallwood finally shine. That’s a lot to ask for but we have found guys as good as anyone else we just need to get that talent to show out.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

I’d say Smart is the leading candidate at Georgia, but Herman is an option. Doubt the Houston kids would follow him out there if he did go though.

I’m not too worried about the future of the WR corps. It’s going to be impossible to replace Shep, but I think several guys just need the opportunity to show what they can do. I expect Todd to be one of those guys. He just hasn’t been able to move up the depth chart, and that’ll take care of itself after this year.

          • Gary Robbins says:

Cleveland has OU in his top 8, which I didn’t know. Seems like Houston, TCU and A&M are leading now. All the coaching changes coming up could change a lot of things. I think he could be a game changer for sure.

          • Zack says:

We need someone to come in that realizes shep is gonna be gone and we need a new number one guy.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

A RB. Ross may transfer right? Unless Brooks is a junior.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Brooks is a junior, Perine and Mixon are back, Anderson waiting in the wings, Adams is committed. We are a year away from needing big time backs. I’m sure they are looking just in case the right one shows interest.

          • Zack says:

People overlook Anderson. He’s gonna be good.

          • Tim A says:

Agree – I heard he was opening eyes before he got hurt. Hope he comes back as strong as before – great potential there.

          • Tim A says:

            Rumor Ross may transfer??

          • Zack says:

I think there’s just a bunch of people who point to his disinterest as he wants to transfer. I bet he stays.

          • EasTex says:

            I agree. Forum chatter only.

          • JD says:

I only see Ross transferring if he grads…but honestly I can’t see many wanting to transfer the way the team is rolling…maybe a db or two and a few wrs

        • Stephen Dale says:

I like your list except for T Moore ( OT)………….also don’t think Bledsoe leaves Kansas….

          • Zack says:

            Really? Kansas…

          • Super Keith says:

I don’t think Moore will be a Sooner either. I’m not sure he’ll even be eligible academically to play D1 ball. It wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up going the JUCO route.

  • Super Keith says:

Overall, I agree with you Jordan. However, I’m not the least bit worried about Seibert. The missed FG wasn’t on him AT ALL. The snap was bad, and I’m impressed that Hodgson was able to get the ball down. What I did see was a great punting effort from Seibert. Considering the kid is a true freshman, he’s been pretty great pulling double duty all year.

Even though Ross only had the one big return, I thought the KO return unit as a whole looked better than they have all year. Such a big part of the game, and setting up our offense. It was nice to see it look a bit like it’s old self again.

This may of been covered already…if so my apologies up front. One observation I had was where was the Big 12 reps for this game? Obviously this game was for the Big 12 championship. But no presentation…what’s that about?

I have been so impressed by Charles Walker this year.. the kid is really a difference maker.. Also… There is just something about this team.. like Mayfield said after the game.. “They really care for each other” you get a feeling of closeness and a feeling that these guys would do anything for each other..
