Bedlam 2015 | OU @ Ok State | What I’ll Be Watching

Image via USA Today

* OU o-line: I appreciate this is somewhat stating the obvious, but for me this game will be won or lost along OU’s offensive line. If the Sooners can keep that Ok State pass rush at least somewhat at bay AND open up running lanes for Samaje Perine & Joe Mixon, then it’s hard for me to envision a scenario in which OU doesn’t win this game.

If one and/or both of those aspects of this game do not work in OU’s favor, then it’s actually quite easy for me to see how the Sooners would lose.

Coming into this game, Oklahoma State is No. 71 nationally in rush defense and perhaps even more to the point, they’re coming off a game that saw Baylor rush the ball 73 (!!!) times. So an already suspect Ok State rush defense is going to be coming into this Bedlam game beat to hell.

This should be a considerable advantage in OU’s favor, and one it’s critical they take advantage of Saturday night.

* Mason Rudolph: As I suspect you’re aware, Rudolph has been dealing with a foot/ankle issue throughout the week and although expected to be somewhat limited, it is believed he will still get the start.

Honestly, the fact that he may be hampered by that injury really isn’t that big of a factor to me. Mobility really isn’t the primary strength of his game, so a lack there of Saturday probably won’t be that much of a factor. If he were going to miss the game then, sure, it’s clearly a major storyline. That doesn’t appear to be the case, however, so in my mind it’s more a case of ‘nothing to see here.’

* Chuck & Duck: The last thing I’ll ever be is an expert in Oklahoma State football, but from what I have seen of them this season their offense consists primarily of heaving the ball downfield and hoping for a long completion or a pass interference penalty.

If you’ve spent any time reading/listening to people talk about the Cowboys in 2015, you’ve no doubt heard those people lament just how awful the run game has been. And for good reason considering Ok State is currently ranked No. 111 nationally in rush offense.

So on paper one would have to believe this is an offense tailor made for a Mike Stoops defense, who typically excel against one-dimensional offenses (though I suspect you could probably make the same case for almost any defense in similar circumstances).

But then again, wouldn’t it be just like a Bedlam game for Ok State to have their best rushing performance of the season?

* Find The Football: To that previous point, while this is an OU secondary that has made considerable strides in 2015 it’s also still one we’ve seen, at times, struggle to find the ball once it’s in the air.

And if there is a WR unit in the country more apt to take advantage of that it’s this Oklahoma State group. Between James Washington, Marcell Ateman, or Jhajuan Seales, all three excel at going up and high-pointing the ball.

Barring some type of fluky performance on the ground, if Ok State figures to move the ball with success it will almost have to be through the air and likely via some combination of those three guys above.

* Trick Plays:

If the Ok State offense is having trouble moving the ball early, or possibly even if that’s not the case, one would have to think, with the incentive of ruining OU’s season, the coaches won’t be “holding anything back now.”

* Cliches: Who takes care of the football? What ‘lesser known’ player steps up to make a name for themselves in a rivalry game? Will special teams be a factor?

What other ones did I miss?

What will you be watching for Saturday night?

    LOS and turnovers……..

  • Golfluvr13 says:

Jordan you have it pretty well covered. I think keeping Baker upright when OU does pass, and opening some lanes for the RB’s is key. The LOS of OU’s DB’s are the key to the game.

  • Birddawg says:

    Spot on Jordan.

Pukes red zone O is actually very efficient. Walsh is a tempo changer. Limit the qb run game inside the 20 and make them throw in smaller Windows.

Couldn’t agree more! Just play a pretty clean game and I don’t see them being able to slow us enough to pull off the upset. Come out hot, put the foot on the throat and NEVER let it off! Boomer!

  • Hotrod33 says:

Personal foul penalties. If we can go without those that will be key especially in critical situations. I don’t care if we play rough and knock a few heads but do it within the game. Discipline will be key.

    • Scott says:

Right on point , no stupid penalties that hurt us from scoring. Also would add Offensive & Defense of playcalling needs to be spot on.

    • William Ryan says:

It was the tone of the game against Baylor, but this is for somthing bigger than anybody on this team could envision. Focus, discipline, and coming out and executing the game plan to the finest detail is what is expected, and more than anything play smart football.

I’d rather have Randolph in there than Walsh. Walsh is their version of Mayfield in that the team responds to him. Because OSU lives by the big play the run game doesn’t really matter for them as they get yards in big chunks between incompletions or runs for no gains. This OSU team, though not as talented as previous teams, still can kick the poop out of OU like they did to TCU who had Boykin and Dotson (for a half).

No penalties either….. Talking at you Brown and Westbrook !

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

I’ll be watching a beatdown of so grand a proportion that the other three playoff teams will be making arguments for not playing OU in the first round.

    Reckoning.

    Healthy Mayfield and Perine= W

    • SoonerinLondon says:

I agree with you, but don’t think either is “healthy”. Baker is one hit from being out and Perine/Mixon will be running on tender ankles.

Having said that, they will both play and (hopefully) that will be enough.

    • soonerthunder says:

      and no TOs.

    • William Ryan says:

Biggest keys to the game right here can not see us losing this one if both is healthy.

  • paganpink says:

Cheating through cheap shots is the only thing comes to mind. The rest you covered well, Jordan. And they always have a trick play or two. Every now and then we have one as well.

  • OceanDescender says:

Looking for lots of run game due to the bad weather. Advantage OU. All those deep passes that OSU will want to run will create lots of slippage on the wet field, really hoping the players falling down will be wearing orange.

    • soonerthunder says:

I’m not so sure that it does give us an advantage or hurt us some. If neither team can pass, that hurts our run game b/c they can gang up against our run game. I just hope there is good footing.

  • soonerthunder says:

If OU wins the TO battle, I think we win

  • William Ryan says:

It seems playing off coverage might be the the best way to go in defending a quick strike offence. I know it’s tough to watch sometimes but when you make a team have 10-12 play drives really just isn’t what they excell at and could set the tone for the game because unlike lOSUer we are so versatile and multiple will gladly play at any pace and take what the defence gives us. As long as we keep Baker up right and give him a decent pocket to pass from it should be a revenge November to remember for ages.

  • Daryl says:

The Walsh package is a huge factor to me. OU has always struggled against running QBs. We luckily didn’t have to play one in Baylor or TCU but Walsh will be huge factor.

  • Spitting Bull says:

I’ll be looking for that unbridled passion and aggressive physical punishing will to slam those pokes right in the face. And then do it again. And again. Let the penalties fall where they may. Just like in Waco. Take no prisoners.

  • Mustvid says:

Our oline against a decent dline, especially in pass pro. Perine and Mixon and how the injuries impact their play. Our receivers other than Sterling. They need to start being a factor in this game and going forward. Would love to see the tight end more, which everyone has been crying for all year. Lastly, how our dbacks handle three good receivers. Hopefully the dline will get after the QB and they’ll get a chance at some pics. No turnovers on offense!

  • 22dupree says:

Sure would be nice to make a play on special teams tonight because:
    a) Lord knows we’re overdue
    b) recently, this game’s winner has made the big plays in the kicking game
    – Broyles punt return for TD
    – Saunders punt return for TD
    – Honeycutt’s TD catch on the fake
and … we’ll not mention last year’s circus, but I’d like to see us play special on special teams tonight.
