Another OU Coaching Change On The Way? (UPDATED 9:06 pm)

We’ve been asked not to say much, but we are anticipating an announcement could be coming as soon as today regarding a potential coaching change on the defensive side of the ball.

UPDATE (9:06 pm): Coach Bobby Jack Wright will retire from coaching this year. Jason Kersey reported it this evening and this was the change we were alluding to. We can confirm this. We’ll have more on this later.

Because he was apparently coaching the cornerbacks heavily this past season and they were the worst they have been in Norman…..possibly ever.
Second he has zero coaching experience as an actual coach and zero off campus or actual experience recruiting, though I doubt he would be the zero in recruiting that Kish has been.
Most importantly it would just be another lazy hire by Bob to promote a GA at a place like Oklahoma. There are tons of much more qualified candidates out there with loads more experience as both players and coaches who would be lining up for the opportunity to interview.
At Oklahoma you should look to hire the best coach possible, promoting a guy who has never coached a group on gameday to position coach is on par with every other piss poor hire Stoops has made…..paging Bruce Kittle.
fair enough. I would agree in most circumstances but i do not agree in this particular place. Viney is an extremely relatable guy and a very good recruiter. He’s as hard of a worker as we have in our program(including other coaches and players). I do not blame him for our poor corner play. It is on mikes scheme and the playing 10 yards off strategy
The truth is we don’t have any idea how good of a recruiter he is, his contact is extremely limited and he has zero off campus contact with any recruit.
The guy has zero experience, that is scary at a place like Oklahoma where it’s about winning national championships.
And for me it’s hard not to place some responsibility for such terrible corner play on a guy who coached them up as much as we all heard he did.
Another reason I feel as though a different corner coach would be the right direction is due to Mike Stoops ineptness. Oklahoma needs intelligent defensive minds on staff that aren’t going to just be yes men to Mike. They need guys who will create some friction and speak up concerning poo plans and schemes.
I don’t mean to say Viney isn’t an intelligent guy, but first year assistants who were GA’s under the guy the previous years just aren’t going to speak up like a vet would.
From what I have heard, having 4 different guys with input didn’t help the corners out much.
Viney coached the CBs, but he didn’t come up with the scheme.
why? guy kills it in recruiting and has west coast connections. Plus Bob does some cb/secondary coaching himself.
Just curious but why? He has done a great job with Thomas and Sanchez. The safeties were the problem.
Thomas was good b/c he was good, when he stepped on campus. They didn’t have enough time to make him good. MS coached safeties this yr. Remember, last yr they said he had too many responsibilities with calling plays and putting 4 to 5 DBs in position and moved Wright to CB coach this yr.
Because he needs to step outside his comfort zone and hire someone that will challenge Mike. Viney is effective at recruiting, keep him on staff in a support position. Hell, at least hire Ryan Walters back as CB coach. Mike loved him and he has cut his teeth else where to gain experience. There is no more time for questionable hires.
Sanchez loves Viney.

I think its Mike Stoops. Spencer Tillman appears to have let one slip on the radio this morning.
He said something like it will be interesting to see what direction they decide to go at defensive coordinator now that they have decided to go in a different direction on that side of the ball.
Or it could be Kish gone, with Mike Stoops taking a demotion and a new DC being brought in. Eitherway, it sounds as if someone else will be calling plays on defense next year

Can’t help but have a trace thought like that, same here. But, no, I don’t think so, but I DON’T know. :).
That seems unlikely, but I sure wish they’d bring him in to consult for a couple of weeks and teach Mike how to use the 3-4 pressure schemes he used at Pittsburgh. Dick knew how to bring heat from multiple angles and positions and really disrupt an offense.
I’ve got nothing against Kish personally…but I’m really hoping this announcement involves a different LB coach

Uhhhhhhh…..WHAT? I know we all have opinions Oscar, but in my view they were terrible. We’ll just disagree on this one.
Played better than the corners most of the time. They had something to do with our run defense having success. That and teams knowing they could throw all over us. 😉
I saw way too much yardage gained not just after contact, but especially when the backers had them wrapped up and the ball carriers would fall for 3-4 yards. That is unacceptable for most defensive coaches. But that’s what you get when you have strong safeties playing linebacker. You won’t see many contenders with backers as small as ours.
Biggest thing I saw when that was happening was a lack of leg drive after contact (i.e. trying to drag ball carriers down with body weight) and that the linebackers were doing a lot of “catching” instead of making solid contact at the point of attack. I can only hope that BJW’s retirement is the start of the shifts in the defensive coaching staff we all have been waiting for.

No BS, he did. I heard him do a radio interview once with a high school player and his coach and during the interview, he said both their names correctly in the beginning. But at some point, Hale messed up both of their names and kept doing it. The coach eventually corrected him, but I was embarrassed for all of them. That’s been within the last 2 years. He messes up A LOT of names.

Logic… You don’t hire Lincoln Riley and then try recruiting zone read style QB’s. I remember how great Swoopes Supposedly was and we didn’t get him. It was for the best obviously. With this hire we are getting away from the zone read entirely, which was almost the case for the 2014 season under Heupel. If we would have gotten Cumbie as a QB coach then Kyler Murray would of no doubt been a Sooner.
Riley has installed some QB run and I think I heard a little bit of ZR. Can’t write Murray just yet because he was the first person to start following Riley on twitter after the announcement. Don’t think he would have done that if he was turned off by it.

Preparation and mind set can’t be understated…I remember the the 04 orange bowl I had a gut feeling we were gonna lose just by watching pregame and watching the trojans rapping with snoop and our guys looked tight…one of the great things about Carroll is he has that swag and it is showing on both levels

I would rather have the physicality of tOSU than the finesse of Oregon right now. You have to have a very good running game to offset the pass and the Buckeyes have done just that to give Oregon some problems.

Well…at this moment, I can’t disagree with Waters. Our single greatest problem, by far, is our terrible defense. It should be priority one. So Bob fires…his offensive coordinator? That doesn’t make any sense. Maybe there are changes on the horizon and we will have a major defensive overhaul of the staff and philosophy. But until and if that happens, we’re in deep doo doo next year if we still can’t stop anyone. Bob did say at the start of the year this was as talented a defense as he’s had, so his evaluation skills sure seem to be in decline…questionable at best.
