Open Post | Tuesday, Aug. 9th

Kenneth Murray: As a reminder, 2017 LB Kenneth Murray (Missouri City, TX) is set to announce his decision tomorrow morning around 8:30 am (CT). He is deciding between OU, TAMU and Texas.

Everyone we’ve spoken with believes OU will be the pick, but we’ll all find out for sure on Wednesday. – (Super K)

Grant Blankenship: Yesterday, TFB broke the news that former Notre Dame defensive end Grant Blankenship had transferred to Oklahoma. Blankenship had some grade issues while in South Bend, which led to his being suspended from the team and ultimately prompted him to seek a transfer.

Now in Norman, TFB has learned Blankenship is not currently on scholarship — though will have an opportunity to eventually earn one — and will use the coming 2016 season to redshirt. After which he will have two remaining years of eligibility starting with the 2017 season.

Team Note | Amani Bledsoe: Some of you have been asking for an update on true freshman defensive end, Amani Bledsoe. So we checked with a couple sources regarding Bledsoe’s progress and whether he could expect to see the field this season.

Bledsoe is apparently running some with the first team defense (as valued TFB commenter KJ also mentioned in the comments), however don’t misunderstand that to mean he’s a starter by any stretch. Bledsoe is still behind guys like Matt Dimon, DJ Ward, Charles Walker, Austin Roberts & Neville Gallimore, but the coaches have been rotating him in as opposed to his reps coming primarily with the practice squad.

One source told TFB that Bledsoe is “pretty strong and could possibly play this year,” while also adding that the true freshman is “instinctive” as well. Apparently on the day our source saw him, Bledsoe was consistently getting the better of some of the back-up RTs.

The impression we came away with after talking to people is that Bledsoe could very well see the field in 2016, but probably isn’t going to move ahead of the guys in front of him on the depth chart. Which is certainly no knock on Bledsoe, because it’s incredibly impressive as a true freshman he’d even be in the position to play at all on this defense. If nothing else it would bode well for his future within the program in 2017 and beyond. – (Super K)

Peer Takes on Creed Humphrey: I (JY) stay in regular contact with Alabama offensive line commit, Alex Leatherwood and LSU offensive line commit, Sahdiq Charles. Both of whomΒ  competed in the New Orleans Nike regional Opening event with now OU commit, Creed Humphrey. So I asked them for a little feedback, as fellow offensive linemen, on what they saw from Humphrey.

Both Charles & Leatherwood had praise for Humphrey and specifically commented on how well the OU commit uses his feet, while noting that he has great physicality and is strong at the point of attack. Nothing they said will surprise anyone who has seen Humphrey on film, but it’s always good to hear it from guys of their caliber who have lined up next to him and gone up against the same level of competition. – (JY)

The other thing I love about Humphrey that jumped out on film is the leverage he plays with. Fires off low and drives those feet.

JY you should recruit Alex Leatherwood to OU πŸ˜‰

Thanks for the update on Bledsoe, K! I do appreciate you asking around about the young man. Actually, thank you to all the TFB staff for everything y’all do. This time of year I’m sure is exciting for y’all and we love the fact you share the information you gather with us!

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Fingers crossed on Murray! And it’s great to hear Humphrey getting the praise

  • Brian says:

At LB, spots should fill quickly…
    Draper – COMMITTED
    Murray – tomorrow
    Chaisson – could be soon
Hines – within the next few weeks/month
Gumbs – by the end of the month
    Phillips – September/October

Hate to say that we can’t take all 6! 4 guys for sure, maybe 5…and that list doesn’t include guys like Tyler Taylor and Jordan Anthony who both will officially visit us.

    • Boom says:

Gumbs, don’t think he will be a sooner. I’m hoping Murray, Hines, and Chaisson are sooners. Not sure about the others but I’m sure it will be narrowed down.

      • Brian says:

My feeling as well – He’s had so much time to pick OU. He’s visited A&M twice, OU just once. But then again, A&M continues to shoot itself in the foot.

      • Gary Robbins says:

With Draper on board and you add Murray, Hines, and Chaisson. Wow! Our LB position would be bad for years to come. Just want some smash mouth no holds barred -get you’re not bleeding yet type warriors on defense.

        • SamSooner says:

Anything else, any other attributes you’re looking for Gary?

          Had any rattlesnakes, lately?

          • Gary Robbins says:

            uh-good grades.
Today is rattlesnake Tuesday on the Hill. Sooner Ray and I have thrown a couple down before.

          • SamSooner says:

Deal, have fun today. When I come to Norman for the tOSU game, I would like to get up with as many TFBers as possible. Will you be there?

          • Gary Robbins says:

Hope too. Told the wife that could be my birthday present, Christmas day present and all national holiday presents wrapped up in one!
She said would a card suffice.

          • Boom says:

I’d like to hit the hill once with you guys but this McAlester boy lives in Houston.

          • Gary Robbins says:

You would enjoy it. Actual name is Crossroads. It sits on a hill, has a large pig statue in front with handlebars attached to it. If it rains too hard we have water running in, everybody knows everybody, all the worlds problems are solved, first liar doesn’t have a chance. But most of all the Manager -she- is a huge Okie State fan.

          • Boom says:

My wife is a SW flight attendant and I can get a pass. I would like to fly up, rent a car and join y’all. I’m in Houston and as hard as it is to believe, there aren’t a lot of guys who want to discuss OU football.

          • Gary Robbins says:

That would be great. Sooner Ray would be there (I’m sure) plus there are 3 or 4 other patrons on the Hill that are OU fans. We are located just right outside of Skiatook and I believe some other posters on here might be able to come in for a meet, greet and drink. As they say let us know.
They have a back porch under the trees which is ideal for bulls**t stories.

          • Boom says:

Love to and what nights are best for the gang or to get a gang together? Also, is this establishment by Skiatook lake? If I googled the right place, it looks cool.

          • Gary Robbins says:

its about 5 miles west of town out near the lake. It’s our “hole in the wall/Cheers type establishment.
Probably Friday would be the best day for most people. Any day would be OK for me. Just let me know and I will contact Sooner Ray as he knows everybody on here.
Also I have a friend who has a smoker and we might have some food to snack on.
We have some posters from Tulsa, Owasso, Collinsville and etc. on here. They might be interested also.

I might be able to attend if the timing is right.

            Starting to make a list.
Makings of a good time, small cook-out, good drinks, outside music, and lots of OU stories.
Saturday may be a better day if before Season starts.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

That would be good with me. Saturday that is.

          • Gary Robbins says:

Trying for 27th-Saturday before 1st game.

          • Gary Robbins says:

            Shooting for Saturday the 27th.

    • Scott says:

I really want Hines , Chaisson , Phillips.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Can someone please post a ridiculous picture of coach B? I’m dying for a good laugh right now.

  • Scott says:

Is OU still recruiting Baron Browning?

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

      That ship sailed my dude

    • Boom says:

Baron is a talent no doubt. The only question I have from watching him play is does he fit our system. Is he the guy who can cover a TE/RB and then be effective as a pass rusher? I’m not the guy to answer this but that is what I think of when his name is brought up.

    • Malicong says:

Still has an offer, not really in the mix. Looking like a Texsa lean but could easily end up in the SEC.

  • AltoidSooner says:

Does Humphrey project to be a RG/LG/C at the D1 level?

  • Dick Bump says:

Hope they redshirt Bledsoe. It doesn’t sound like he’ll play that much. If not, I’d rather see him develop and get his school work in good shape for a year. He has a chance to be really good before he’s done.

    • Gary Robbins says:

I agree with you. Hope they don’t use him a little and burn up a year.
It seems the super studs are only around for 3 years of actual playing time.
I am going to be watching Double O (spelling ?). I hope the switch turns on for him.

    • SamSooner says:

Good point. I think we are so deep at that position.

    • thebigdroot says:

Transfer rule. Has to sit out a year.

      • cush creekmont says:

Mixing him up with the ND walkon transfer – Blankenship. Bledsoe is a true freshman at OU.

    • Boom says:

I’m with you bud. I would really like to see him learn the system and get in D1 shape and be a starter year 2. Unless, he’s a darn freak and we can’t keep him out of the rotation, then let the big man eat.

  • BoomCity89 says:

It’s crazy what a year can do for your program. Stadium renovations, coaching security and a playoff birth. Last year we had 15 of the 21 recruits join OU after 10/1/15, which of course was during our season. This year we already have 17 recruits and the season is still about a month away ha. It would not surprise me at all if we have 21 recruits before we hit October this year…… BOOM!

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

  • KJ1123 says:

I hope we continue to get overlooked nationally. Always works out well that way.

    • Boom says:

Interesting, the people in the know don’t overlook us. Only the folks with their money agendas.

      • KJ1123 says:

I can’t watch those rankings shows anymore, they go right from Bama and skip any talk about OU everytime. Unless of course they say we’re overrated.

    • Scott says:

That’s what I’ve been saying latley. Everyone is sleeping on OU and calling them overrated.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

We’re treated this way because our performance in the past 10 or so years has proven us to be overrated when projected top 5. When projected 15-20, though, we’ve proven to be underrated.

        Just win. That fixes everything.

        • jimintexas says:

OU has shown a history the last few years of just not looking good in some games. texsa is one of those. They need to stay focused, avoid injuries, and not have these game or two lapses and they will can shock some people.

People are already talking about OU sneaking up on team last year and catching them at the right time. When they speak of TCU, they don’t mention the cheap shot on BM that took him out and the back up QB did not play well at all. — We should be OK

        • Sacramento Sooner says:

          Agreed

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I haven’t seen anybody call OU overrated. Matter of fact, I read some ESPN article yesterday (behind a pay wall I think), and out of the 6-7 guys they had “predicting” the playoff teams, I believe all had OU on their list.

        • lefty67 says:

Ed Cunningham did on CFB Live a couple of days ago. Reasons were lack of star power on D + Shep’s gone. FWIW, on the same show, Mark May’s pick was tOSU, for only returning 6 starters & still being ranked top 5.

    • BoomCity89 says:

I know Houston isn’t a proven “Power House” over multiple years right now, but very well could be in the making. But I cannot remember a time where OU was going against an entire city rather than just the school. 9/3 is going to be LIT!

    • hOUligan says:

Man… That chip just keeps getting bigger and bigger but it makes the team stronger and tighter carrying that thing.

      • Scott says:

The OU players hear this type of stuff everyday. Like you said ” That chip just keeps getting bigger and bigger “.

    • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

I listened to eight hours straight of College Sports Radio on XM yesterday. What follows is my summary:

“There’s something special brewing in Austin….Nick Saban will have a championship team….The Olympics is awesome….Georgia needs better QB play….Charlie Strong is building something great….Nick Saban is as awesome as the Olympics….Houston plays Oklahoma….Notre Dame has two identical twin QBs….Nick Saban would win the Olympics….What the world needs is for Charlie Strong and Nick Saban to have a messiah baby…”

      • KJ1123 says:

I swear, everytime I listen to CFB radio or switch to it on TV they always just brush over OU. And Im not whining that we need more coverage but it’s almost blatant.

        • R@z0rb says:

Completely agree. @disqus_khouOcbovX:disqus and I were discussing this exact same thing the other night. After the AP poll for best college program came out, CFB Live had a discussion about it. Needless to say they didn’t mention OU once. All they wanted to talk about was how both Bama and ND got slighted and should have been number 1. Unfortunately IMHO it will not change until we start absolutely dominating in the Big XII and winning on the big stage. Not to mention the other teams in the conference need to show out. Even then I am probably fooling myself by thinking OU would get the respect they deserve. At the end of the day it is business and ESPN is going to promote their brand.

        • Sacramento Sooner says:

It’s only going to get worse with the perceived value of the Big 12 plumetting.

      • Double G says:

Robertson / Robertson 2016 how have you been? You’ve been MIA for a while, the 2016 Presidential campaign keeping you that busy?

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Kind of like that old Saturday Night Mike Ditka skit. Godzilla v Ditka…..Ditka…

    • SamSooner says:

It’s worst than being overlooked; it’s on the cusp of not being liked, which would fuel me more. How can OU continue to get dismissed with all of this talent.

      • KJ1123 says:

Probably because Bob doesn’t placate the media. Harbaugh has his antics, Saban has his during press conferences, Urban is pretty low key…but smug at the same time….etc. Bob just answers straight forward, doesn’t get baited into being misquoted, gives everyone their props.

        • SamSooner says:

I know. If I’m walking past the TV while Max has it on, I’ll stop. Do I stop what I’m doing because Game Day is on?

          No.

          No, I do not.

      • SoonerSpock says:

        Probably has something to do with the last 5 recruiting classes being ranked 12th, 16th, 14th, 14th and 19th while Alabama had classes ranked 1, 1, 1, 1 and 1; Ohio State classes of 5th, 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 4th; FSU classes of 3rd, 11th, 4th, 3rd and 2nd; LSU classes of 14th, 6th, 2nd, 6th and 3rd and Georgia classes of 8th, 12th, 3th, 5th and 8th.

Everyone of their classes were ranked higher than any of our classes except the 2012 LSU class. If you go to the last 5 NFL drafts you will see a similar differential in talent.

One year of outstanding QB play, minimal injuries and catching opponents with their starting QB out does not suddenly make OU loaded in top national talent. If you look at talent depth we are not close to being on par with Alabama, Ohio State and FSU for top talent and talent depth. Obviously we are much closer to LSU and perhaps near on par with Georgia.

Now our performance last year making the CFP, our change to aggressive recruiting tactics by our new coaching staff and a great 2016 year on the field could give us the impetus to permanently enhance our recruiting classes back to the top ten level we experienced 2000-2010.

        • kt-raida says:

That must mean OU’s staff are great developers if your average we’ll make you good, good we’ll make you great, great we’ll have you with an 8 figure guaranteed contract in the pro’s.

          • SoonerSpock says:

I have always felt that Bob probably get more out of less than most top coaches. Oklahoma and Nebraska have long been college powers working at extreme disadvantage because of the absence of lots of local talent. The Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania school have enough in state talent that they can compete on a national basis if they merely keep the top in state talent at home. OU, on the other hand must get 65-75% of its talent from another schools local talent.

While most of the SEC schools get a lot of quality kids from out of state they restrict themselves to primarily SEC states with Georgia and Florida providing a preponderance of the other schools out of state talent. Alabama is an exception to the SEC M.O. since Saban came to Tuscaloosa and their recruiting focus has become more national in scope with 5 of their 21 2017 commits coming from non-SEC states. Florida, Georgia, LSU, aTm and Auburn have an aggregate total of 4 non-SEC state commits combined. Net net the SEC schools focus on recruiting the SEC states.

        • soonerSD says:

while reading this I kept wanting to believe your points to not be true… but, they are πŸ™

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

While your points are valid, the fact that we place roughly the same number of pros as these other schools shows that the talent IS very close.

Going into the 2015 NFL season only LSU had a decided advantage with 40 players on rosters for the 1st game. Of the schools you mentioned in your post, Bama and Georgia had 34, OU 31 and FSU 31. Not far off at all as SamSooner mentioned.

          • SoonerSpock says:

Not to dispute your NFL numbers but those number reflect the pros from the school for the last 15 years+. OU’s talent shortcomings are a derivative of recruiting the last 5 years. If you look at the number of players drafted from each school 2012-2016 the numbers are consistent with the # of 4*/5* players signed during the same period.

During that period Alabama had 36 drafted, FSU 35, LSU 32, Ohio State 30, Georgia 27 and OU 25. Every school except Georgia at least 20-44% more NFL draftees than the Sooners. Having 5 to 11 more NFL draftees on a roster (4 years + redshirt year) is a lot of incremental talent on one team and we desperately need to reduce that advantage over the next 3-5 years to again become a top ten recruiting class school on a consistent basis. 2011-2015 was a killer for the Sooners recruiting. 2017 is the start of that needed recruiting surge.

    OLB’s – Chaisson & Murray
    DE- Graham
    DT’s – Rogers & Watts
    S – Okudah

    • Scott says:

      I like it.

    • ALar03 says:

5 lbs? Sure could be the greatest year of recruiting at several positions since stoops has been here

      • soonerborn says:

Chaisson is a talent that you take. He’s listed as a DE but only 211lbs. He would be a kid you take and see how his body develops.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Agree. Think we probably only take 2 of Murray, Phillips, and Hines if Chaisson is on board also.

    • SoonerSpock says:

20 4*/5* recruits in the class is probably a little optimist but I hope you are right. 2008 with 15 and 2010 with 16 are our best years in the Stoops era for recruiting 4*/5* recruits. No star ranking for the Switzer and Wilkinson eras.

Now our performance last year making the CFP, our aggressive recruiting tactics by our new coaching staff and a great 2016 could give us the impetus to permanently enhance our recruiting classes back to the top ten level we experienced 2000-2010.

      • Bob Edwards says:

We already have 14 recruits that are listed as 4* by at least one site. Of the three that aren’t ,one is the #1 ranked punter (punters never get 4*) and another is the #1 JUCO “Athlete.” So with eight or nine spots left 20 is not out of the question. At this point, except for one or two positions of need, I think we end up being picky on who we take. 20 might be a stretch but breaking 16 seems a given at this point..

I am like everybody else and want Baron Browning which now seems unlikely but Kenneth Murray as some impressive camp #’s as well. Here is the Nike Opening Regional #s. I don’t put Murray on Kelly’s level, and doubt he’ll be as D1 ready from day 1 as we all hope Kelly is.

      • Randy says:

Haven’t seen Kelly on the field yet. I get the stars thing but Kelly coming in this year after losing 4 OLB is more of a reason he is getting looks than talent all of these guys are talented.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Ribs are hard to keep moist. Basting is only way. I usually cook them to just before “done” and then baste and wrap in aluminum foil. Continue to cook a little more, then pull them off and cover them with towels and let them rest 30 min. They will continue to cook all wrapped up even off the heat. They can be very finicky thing to cook. Has to be just right.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

For sure, you have to wrap them at some point and let them rehydrate. Can’t just smoke them or they’ll be tough and not enjoyable.

          • Bob Bender says:

You mean you cheat and baste them? Ivan Lasley from Okay Owingeh, which used to be San Juan Pueblo, gave me two chunks of elk meat. Barbecued the smaller piece with Walmart charcoal and Walmart seasoned salt. Sometimes we use live oak from the canyons around here or honey mesquite, which can be overwhelming. The memorial day before this, a tribal member from from Taos Pueblo spoke of the bison they were barbecuing. The elk was somewhat dry and well-done, but ZuZu and I liked it. We use a vintage New Braunfels smoker.

          • Bob Bender says:

ZuZu goes 29″ and 100 lbs and does a mean Oklahoma drill, running straight at you, only to veer off at the last second. Impossible to stop without enticements.

          • Bob Bender says:

            ZuZu again

          • Birddawg says:

Well I have used a offsettower for about 10 or so years.. all stickburning. Takes a watchful eye
Now, I think I want something a little easier. Electric or charcoal..
meat from a good butcher. hickory wood.
I rub down my ribs with a little olive oil then my rub. Sit in a fridge overnight Cook low and slow.. 6-7 hrs 225-235ish..
Apple juice spray every 1hr or so.. (apple injection butt as well)
Lather with Arthur bryants oh damn..
            Doing a charcoal.
I have put cinnamon sticks and apple peel with hickory in the water pan. That was pretty good.
            Apple and hickory

          • SamSooner says:

            Thanks, Birddawg.

            I’ll try it.

          • Brian says:

Did you spray the ribs every 45 minutes or so? I mix apple juice, apple cider vinegar, worcestershire, and water and put it in a spray bottle.

          • SamSooner says:

No. I did not. That is a great suggestion.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Crazy! I just commented my suggestion then read yours lol. Love it.

          • Brian says:

Nice! I do the rib spray each time I turn the ribs (every 45 minutes or so), then right before I wrap, I lightly baste the ribs with a BBQ sauce. I lay out the aluminum foil, put a little more sauce down, spray some more of the spray to thin it out, then wrap them up to put back on the smoker maybe 30 more minutes. Pull the ribs and let them rest inside the foil for 10-15 minutes before cutting.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Smoke them first for 2-3 hours, while spraying them down with apple juice every 30 minutes. Once you’ve done that then take the racks and wrap them in foil and include more apple juice and butter combo then throw them back in the smoker and let them rehydrate and become perfectly moist usually another 1-2 hours then Slap them on the BBq and coat them with at least 3 coats of BBQ sauce and you’re good.

          • ALar03 says:

wanna cookout for games this year? I like the way your talking! Lol

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Man I would love to do that if I wasn’t 1200 miles away! My old roommates on campus loved me, let’s put it that way lol.

          • ALar03 says:

Almost wish I was still in socal.. I would make that trip every Saturday for some awesome Bbq and watching OU football with a sooner fan!

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I hear ya. I’ve yet to try and make it to the sooner club of Vegas, but I probably should make it there for a game this season. It’s always nice to watch the games with fans that are likeminded.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

That sounds very good. I’ll have to try apple juice. Although, I don’t like the sweet flavor on my meat. I’m more of a spicy rub kind of guy.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Oh I love my spicy foods as well. Honestly though, once you start the coating process with your favorite BBQ sauce ( famous daves Devils pit ) you won’t taste an ounce of Apple juice. Rehydrating the ribs is the most crucial part to any rib process, IMO.

          • cush creekmont says:

Moisture is critical to all meat smoking – learned that the hard way when I was young.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

For sure. I inject almost everything I smoke besides brisket and ribs. My turkey smoking process produces a damn good bird and it consist of injecting loads of butter into it! Haha.

          • MoJoOkie says:

            Turkeys are for frying.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

My mother wouldn’t allow my pops to do a fried turkey when I was a kid and it was a battle for him to even get her to open up on the idea of a smoked turkey and once we did that, we’ve been hooked since. You could deep fry a mechanical pencil and I’d eat it as long as I had some ranch to dip it in haha.

          • MoJoOkie says:

That’s funny cause I was the one always adverse to frying them for Thanksgiving. I always smoked them. Finally, they gave me a fryer at work for some reason or the other and the rest is history. I fry a whole chicken on occasion too and they’re tasty. But BBQ/smoking is my normal weekend habitue in the Summer.

          • cush creekmont says:

Turkey for me is always brined overnight – it will pick up moisture and the salt sort of “sets” the bird.

One can never go wrong with butter…or bacon! πŸ™‚

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Oh yeah, I didn’t include the brining process haha. That’s a must with a bird. The brine I use has about 10 different ingredients, are you a salt and pep kind of guy or do you get creative?

          • SamSooner says:

I read somewhere that pork is naturally sweet. Apple juice enhances the flavor. When I grill mine, I use honey and butter, while the ribs are wrapped in foil.

          • cush creekmont says:

Nice Sam! I use butter too. My dad used brown sugar and molasses. I’ve gone with the butter, but brown sugar mixed in sometimes too.

          • SamSooner says:

Smells like sweet potatoes cooking. I’m hungry.

          • SamSooner says:

            That sounds yummy.

            Thanks, Vegas.

There are experts all over the place.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

It’s certainly a little time consuming and if you’re playing the “host” roll it might feel like you’re spending too much time on the ribs, but once the guests bite into the ribs they’ll completely understand πŸ˜‰

        • MoJoOkie says:

I haven’t cooked anything on mine that hasn’t turned out great. The only drawback for me is I cooked 36 chicken quarters on it and cleaning up the grease afterword sucked. Chicken was superb though. I’ve done brisket, butt, chicken, and steaks and they have all been very good. One thing I like is you can keep adding fresh wood without opening the cooker. Pretty good cooker for a lazy, beer drinker.

        • SoonerGoneEast says:

I’ve got a MB and it’s the easiest way to smoke meat. Mine connects to my phone via bluetooth allowing me to monitor and adjust the oven temperature as well as monitor the temperature of the meat.

As for the smoke ring, I always get a little bit of one. I tend not to push the smoke too much, but I suppose it would be more defined if I did.

There’s also a high capacity cold smoking kit that holds enough wood chips for several hours. I bought it to smoke cheeses, but I also use it for regular smoking so I don’t have to add chips every thirty minutes.

          • Birddawg says:

Do what, monitor on your cellphone. Now that is bitchin.

          • SoonerGoneEast says:

Yeah, I can monitor and adjust cook time and temperature and I can also monitor the temperature inside the animal, all from my iPhone or iPad. Pretty much makes me the coolest guy around.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

Do you really need smokers to pi$$ off neighbors?

      • Dick Bump says:

I have a “Made in America” PK (Portable Kitchen) cast aluminum charcoaler. Works great but it’s not real large if you’re doing a lot of entertaining. Lasts forever.

      • Doobie74OU says:

Don’t blame people for going either direction on a smoker they choose to go but If you are “working” at smoking meat you ain’t doing it right. Best days I have are when I invite over a few guys break out the ice chest loaded with Beer and a couple bottles of Booze and sit around the smoker all day watching Football, Hanging out then feasting at the end of the day. I go to work just about everyday and that ain’t work! JMHO

    • Chad says:

I have a large big green egg and LOVE it. I have had it for over 10 years and still no issues. Lifetime guarantee too… Just have to learn to use it, but it will hold a temperature for a very long time.

    • Matt S. says:

Green Egg’s are just awesome. I will be buying one of these soon myself.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

It’s almost cheating using a BGE. They are so simple to operate and produce a great product ( unless it’s user error ) every time.

    • Dick Bump says:

IMO. It’s hard to beat charcoal. I don’t have one, but I know people who swear by the egg or something similar. Kind of expensive, but they don’t use much charcoal. Depending on how much you cook, the charcoal savings could pay for the difference, if you live long enough….maybe 150 -200 years.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I just bought my first ceramic grill/smoker and I love it. Boston butt and brisket turned out awesome this weekend.

We had a group discussion a few months ago on best smoker with least amount of effort and I think some version of the electric kind “won”. They will all do the job, but to me the difference is how hard is it to do the job? You can buy ceramic temp regulators that make super easy. With mine last weekend I just loaded up the charcoal, got the temp set to 220 F and threw the meat on for several hours. I manually checked the temp on each piece of meat (185F for brisket, and 195F for Boston butt). No other effort required. JMHO

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

Forgot to mention the initial charcoal load lasted all day and burned very slowly. I also threw some apple wood chunks in there and it complements pork & chicken very well. Very tasty and smells wonderful.

      • Roy C says:

I have a Horizon offset smoker made in Perry OK. Stick burning is the way to go but more time consuming

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yeah, I have an offset stick burner myself. It is a double door beast that can cook the largest of turkey, a full bone in ham shank all at once. Used it many times on Thanksgiving morning through afternoon. I have to check the fire every 30 min and by end of day I’m worn out. But it does a great job. The ceramic is so easy compared to the stick burner. I told the wife I was going to put stick burner for sale, but she wouldn’t hear it. She likes the output from barrel smoker too much. πŸ™‚

    • MoJoOkie says:

I know a couple of people who have them and say they’re amazing. Course if I drop a grand on something to cook with I’m saying the same thing. I’ve gone almost completely to electric due to a malady that has developed; laziness.

    • cush creekmont says:

Man. I have to work and miss an entire smoking discourse (only OU football can beat that). Now that I’ve read all the responses, I won’t add much. Nephew loves his EGG. I like my electric for ease of use and small stuff is much better than the big grill-smoker.

And like many have said – dang conversation makes me hungry too!

    • Doobie74OU says:

Can’t go wrong with any choice as Smoked meat is the best! It comes down to the experience you are looking for. If you are looking to “Set it and Forget it” Electric and/or the Egg are the way to go but if you enjoy the journey and the art of smoking meat you got to go Offset Stick Smoker. Either way you are eating great at the end of the day!

Sunday OU got the good news that four-star 2018 quarterback Cameron Rising (6’1, 170, 4.7) of Pinnacle High School in Phoenix, Arizona wanted to be an Oklahoma Sooner.”

Not a big deal, but for the record, Cameron is nearing 6’3 and weighs 205 lbs and runs a 4.65 40 yard dash.

    • KJ1123 says:

Woah….did you know about that dad?? haha

    • Fear The Magic says:

      Welcome back!
I’ve seen several heights attributed to Cameron. I guess no one would know better than you do so is he more 6’1ish or more 6’3″. Whichever he is, hes only going to be a jr and will probably grow.

      • Fear The Magic says:

oops nevermind. Just reread your post. “Nearing 6’3” and thanks.
Nothing like going to the source.

      • nrising7 says:

He’s a little over 6’2″. Might be in the middle of a growth spurt. When we got back from our college tour two weeks ago, everyone said he was taller than he was before we left on the trip. He’s trying to catch his brother who is 6’5″.

    • cush creekmont says:

Yessir – Welcome to the best Sooner spot. We here would not likely know of a Hale error since we don’t frequent his stuff. We’ll be watching yOUr young man the next couple of years before we welcome him!

Seems like we are in purgatory with this kid. Would love to be able to celebrate him as part of SS17, but nothing seems official on him. Does anyone have an explanation for how he could be part of the 17 Class? If he is going to Preparatory School, that would explain it. Just no details. If he is in the 17 Class, is his offer from OU still on the table? Would welcome him as a “get” in a big way.

      • KJ1123 says:

I’m not sure how that works. If he has to retake HS courses to qualify then I assume he can be a part of 17.

      • bommer85 says:

ya im not sure of how this process goes but Tramonda would be a nice final piece to the 17 OL class and another solid Okie on SS17

      • Bob Edwards says:

He appears to be going to Independence CC. The transfer rules from a JUCO are complicated. Basically, if he can qualify academically he only has to go one semester and complete 12 hours. So assuming all he needed to qualify was some class work he could transfer after the end of the semester and be an early enrollee for 2017. If he doesn’t meet the NCAA qualifier standards then he has to finish his associates at the JUCO in order to be eligible for D1.

        • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Thanks; very helpful. If classwork was the hurdle, hopefully he takes care of business and joins the good guys. I assume he will play football wherever he is, but would nice if he just handled the classwork and came in with 4 to play 4.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Well Independence CC lists him on their football page so I’m guessing he will play for them this year. If he does come in 17 it looks like he will be a 4 to play 3.

          • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Just looked at ICC’s football page. You are right, he is definitely playing. They have him featured everywhere. Hopefully it works out.

          • Hotrod33 says:

Any university in their right mind will not hire him or shouldn’t. If any happen to want to do that, then he should have to go through some type of ethics class or program before he does get hired.

          • Sooner Ray says:

As soon as I’m out of the corporate world, I want some of that crack he’s smoking. πŸ™‚

          • Bob Edwards says:

Someone will hire him. There are no NCAA sanctions against him. Look at Bobby Patrino. After his very public incident he was back coaching in six months and back at Louisville in a couple of years. Briles made BAYLOR a national contender. A Baylor team that had averaged one conference win a season since joining the B-12.

          • Hotrod33 says:

Bob, I get it but what if it happen at another university and lied there too. I mean that university is taking a big risk to hire him. We won’t know until we see it on the news.

        • Dustin says:

He has a new one up with “excepts” from Briles’ interview.
          EXCERPTS*

    • Dustin says:

This is why I love Esco.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

He’d say: You can’t stop me from earning a living. I protect my own.

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Yeah, I saw what occasioned Esco’s expletive.

Briles is doubtless the kind of man that would believe his actions were not disgraceful and that if he could promise wins, any school would take him.

I still think Bail er should be forced out. The cover up is obvious from top to bottom and from the Brazos to downtown Waco.

I have to stop now and wash my hands….

      • SamSooner says:

I can’t understand why they’ve not been asked to leave the conference. What is the NCAA and the DOJ waiting on?

        • Cush Creekmont says:

I wonder why Boren is silent on this. He was adamant about protecting women, but not a peep about the worst institutional cover up of abused women ever. I can only hope that the FBI or such has told the other schools to stay mum until they make arrests – otherwise it is hypocrisy by the admins who say nothing.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Here are the questions to answer:

Conference – What specific rules did Baylor or Briles break and what evidence is there of it?

NCAA – What specific rules did Baylor or Briles break and what evidence is there of it?

DOJ – What specific laws did Baylor or Briles break and what evidence is there of it?

There does appear to be a Title 9 case but that requires the rape victims to sue Baylor.

          • Sooner Ray says:

I think it all can be summed up with lack of institutional control where the NCAA is concerned. The DOJ should start at the local PD and work their way to the University. The conference is chicken sh%t.

          • Bob Edwards says:

People keep saying lack of institutional control, but this doesn’t fall under that because there is no evidence of NCAA rule violations. From an NCAA standpoint the lack of institutional control applies to a school that has violated a number of NCAA rules. It’s kind of a way of punishing a school for a major violation when all they can prove is a bunch of minor ones.

My point is not to defend Bailer here. But people need to understand why the powers that be aren’t doing anything. Bailer has done a good job of appearing to do something while not opening themselves up to possible prosecution by the DOJ or the NCAA.

There is a thing called due process and we don’t really want that thrown out, because if we let them punish Bailer without cause today, they’ll come after us some other day.

          • SoonerMagic76 says:

Darn you for interjecting sense and logic… all good points Bob

          • Sooner Ray says:

I understand the process to a degree but this stinks to high heaven and all the guts haven’t been cut open yet.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I believe it will all fall apart in the Title 9 case. Some evidence will be shown in the case that will allow the NCAA to drop the boom on them. Though I do think that is why Bailer gave Briles the money they did. If it had gone to court, Briles would have made sure enough evidence came out that the NCAA would have fried Bailer.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Hope you’re right. I don’t know which upsets me more…coaches covering up wrong doings of players or lawmen covering for an institution.

          • JB says:

As a cop, for me it would be law enforcement officers violating their sworn oath to uphold the Constitution of their state and the Constitution of the United States. You simply cannot do that, not even once. When a rape victim cannot trust you to serve their interest, who can they trust or go to for help? You cannot let your personal interests (like football) supersede the law. Period.

          • JB says:

Title IX compliance is a part of bylaw 6, and Baylor officials failed to act upon complaintswhen reported. The NCAA could use this and Any other infractions to show a pattern of conduct to punish Baylor just like they did to Penn State.

          • SoonerMagic76 says:

This has actually been my exact thought. This has to be the definition of “lack of institutional control”

          • CcrBoomer says:

I will be wearing my (Kick Baylor Out) tshirt to every home game this year. Only way it will change is, if Boren signs an extension.

          • BleedCrimson says:

I am pretty sure coverup of a crime would fall under Code of Conduct clause in the scholarship agreement.

          • JB says:

Conference – Big 12 bylaws 1.3.1.1, 1.3.1.5, and also 1.3.2 if the NCAA sanctions them for bylaw 6 violations.

NCAA – see NCAA rule book and read Constitution 2.4, and bylaws 10.01.1, 10.1, 11.1.1, 19.01.2. I’m sure there are others that apply. The big one, of course, is bylaw 6 and its subsets.

DOJ – It would actually be through the DOE, but the government can hit them hard with fines and take away federal funding under the Jeanne Clery Act and Title IX.

As for crimes Briles committed and evidence thereof, I do not know if these exist. If any evidence was uncovered, Baylor made sure to suppress. They required Pepper Hamilton to give an oral report as opposed to a written report in order to preserve attorney-client privilege.

However, he is considered a CSA according to the Clery Act, and Jasmin Hernandez reported the sexual assault by Tevin Elliott, and he did nothing. That alone is a Clery vviolation.

        • SoonerinLondon says:

I would be shocked if they were asked to leave. I just can’t see it.

I’ll be surprised if the NCAA does very much. I think the Title IX punishment is about the only thing to expect.

          • CcrBoomer says:

If you go back and watch the B12 media days. Bill Snyder talks about when he first took over at KSU. He said the Big8 had already started the paper work to have KSU removed from the Big8 because of attendance. Snyder was able to get attendance up just in time to save them.
Now how can you kick a conference member out over attendance issues and not be able to kick them out over something this heinous

          • Dick Bump says:

            Money matters.

          • Cush Creekmont says:

Hey DB, don’t get into things about bailer – that kind of dirt is hard to wash off.

          • SoonerinLondon says:

All I can do is repeat my opinion.

I would be shocked if they were asked to leave. I just can’t see it.

I’ll be surprised if the NCAA does very much. I think the Title IX punishment is about the only thing to expect.
