Team News | Injury: Unfortunate news coming out of practice this week as TFB has learned starting right guard Alex Dalton suffered another knee injury and could likely miss an extended period of time as a result.

With Dalton out, Jonathan Alvarez has been rotating between center and right guard with Erick Wren getting the reps center when Alvarez is at guard. – (Super K)

    Wow Bad news

  • ellisbr says:

well, next man up. hope the young man has a full, speedy recovery though. hate hearing kids go down with injuries.

  • ouwooferman says:

    dadgum.

  • Birddawg says:

    STAY AWAY INJURY BUG!
    We cant lose anyone.

  • Birddawg says:

Did Wren get some snaps against UH?

  • RDC212 says:

    Well that sucks.

  • Tony B says:

Feel horrible for AD (he just can’t buy any good luck). That being said I have been wanting to see what Wren can do at center. I love to see those motivated walk-on’s get their shot. They usually make the most of it if only out of pure determination.

    • PLAW0720 says:

Ughh, there is only one “AD” at OU and he wore No. 28. No offense to young Mr. Dalton and certainly hope he gets back to action soon.

      • LBS says:

haha I read that and thought something had happened to Peterson again.

      • Tony B says:

Lol Sorry for abbreviating but I think you got the jest of what I was saying. I’m surprised it posted as well as it did from a cell phone.

  • Tboneathome says:

    KJ called it again…

  • Indy_sooner says:

Like Anderson, dude just can’t catch a break

  • Doobie74OU says:

Hate to hear it for this guy but wasn’t Samoa taking reps at RG anyway with Evans at RT. Seems like they were thinking about making a move anyway.

  • Jesse says:

tough news. But if Wren is as hard to move as we’ve heard I feel like our OL will be okay (if not better) prayers for Dalton though really tough news.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Are we better with Wren, Alvarez, Samia (from center to tackle), or Alvarez, Samia, Evans?

    • BoomerShauner says:

This looks like a “comfort move” rather than the more obvious “talent move”. Having Alvarez still out there gives you an experienced guy who can call out protections until Wren gets a hang of it.

      • RDC212 says:

Which is how you lose to teams like Houston imo. Same as going with Austin at CB as far as I’m concerned.

  • Matt says:

Is the Samia at guard experiment already over?

  • LandThieve3 says:

Dang, I would like to see Evans at right tackle and move Samia inside at guard. We can’t afford any more injuries across the OL

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

That would probably be the most gifted 5

    • SoonerSpock says:

That tells me that Evans is not ready at DT. No question we would be physically stronger with Alverez, Samia and Evans but obviously not as fundamentally sound. Damn it!!!

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

    Thanks for the update

  • HoustonChiver says:

At first I was all, “yay Open Post!”

Now I’m all, “boo Open Post…”

Regardless, the info is appreciated as always.

  • bommer85 says:

could be so much worse…truth is Dalton was getting manhandled by Houston and was very hesitant.

Hopefully he can recover and get better/stronger

    • RDC212 says:

Very true. Just glad it’s not Samia or Brown. Though, Brown needs to redeem himself after that last game.

      • bommer85 says:

i saw bedenbaugh screaming at brown during the game on the sideline i didn’t think he played terrible. wasn’t up to OU or I’m sure his standards but most guys seemed lackadaisical that game

  • Fear The Magic says:

Sorry for Dalton and I hope he recovers soon.
Any news on when Damlier is coming back?

  • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

That is tough for Dalton. Hate it for him. Here is to a rapid and complete recovery.

  • cush creekmont says:

As always, thanks for the info update TFB.
Also, thanks and thumbs up to KJ.
We all wish the young man well and a speedy recovery.
With the coming “practice” game, I would expect both the above stated Wren, Alvarez, Samia group getting a try, but the Wren/Alvarez, Samia, Evans group also getting a shot.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

This next game should be a good opportunity to see how both Wren and Evans do in a real game. Hopefully one of them can step up and show he’s in the top 5.

  • ALar03 says:

Saw Barnes won 6A player of the week last game with 6 receptions for 150yrds and a FF on defense. Then I saw this stat line.. Holy cow! In Week 1, Cleburne quarterback Tre’Von Bradley was named the 5A Player of the Week after accounting for 431 yards rushing and seven TDs, and 151 yards passing and two TDs against Stephenville.

  • Chris White says:

Sucks for Dalton, he was a major recruit out of High School and hasn’t seen the field due to injury but as long as it’s not a tear again and he can recover easily I’m happy.

As for rotation, I look forward to seeing Erick Wren, all the hype from Camp coupled with Alvarez’s showing at guard last weekend, I’m okay with a change. I think that is the most likely scenario because moving Alvarez and Samia and starting Bobby Evans is just to many changes in a few days for Stoops to be comfortable with

  • Dana Rogers says:

    Get well soon young man.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Weird some of my comment section disappeared. I refreshed and they are back

  • Sooner Ray says:

Sucks for Dalton, hope he recovers soon. If there is a bright side, it’s a good week for Wren to take a crack at It.

  • Bob Edwards says:

Sheesh, is it basketball season yet?

  • GoBoomSoon says:

    Darn! Another injury 🙁

  • ouwooferman says:

So now Briles is admitting he did wrong. ESPN will air this on game day. (which i dont watch FWIW). Stinks of Clinton-esque style of coming clean. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/art-briles-to-admit-mistakes-at-baylor-in-interview-on-gameday-2-230751923.html

  • Stephen Dale says:

quiet in here .. is everyone finally realizing that I’m right??!… ou lost too much production from last season … they are struggling to find replacements…as the season goes along texas is going to finish higher than ou for the first time since 09…. pray no more injuries or my prediction of 4 losses be considered conservative….

    • RDC212 says:

      Everyone just block this tool.

      • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

To be honest, Dale does not bother me. He is very, very cynical and undoubtedly The Eeyore of TFB, but he actually has good observations and some intelligent posts if you can stomach the lugubrious casing. Biggest fault is he does not admit when he is wrong and does not acknowledge the positive aspects of the program. His cynical outlook does cause him to overstate the case on the negative end, and as a result he is often wrong; but there is more often than not a kernel of insight in his posts. Eeyore will be Eeyore, does not mean that he is a tool, it just means he is Eeyore. Just my two nickles.

        • RDC212 says:

I prefer to not even feed that garbage. You do as you like. I am convinced he’s nothing more than a 2-bit troll, and trolls should be starved.

          • rphokc says:

an observaton…..sd posts once, you respond 6 times and counting…. I’ve always found that more irritating than sd

          • RDC212 says:

I responded to others who seem to think feeding the troll will make him go away. Not to him. There’s a difference.

          • rphokc says:

            not really, but carry on………

          • RDC212 says:

            Yeah, really.

          • jmshake says:

On an unrelated noted, we are 2 days away from seeing our Sooners win a football game and start a winning streak. Gotta believe! BOOMER!

          • RDC212 says:

I do believe they’ll look much better against Ohio state. That Houston game was the one we could most tolerate a loss. Just gotta hope we’re not battling them for a cfp spot.

          • Stephen Dale says:

they may tighten up and look a little bit better but ohio state has better athletes at almost every position… ohio state has the best defensive line we will face all year.. our oline doesn’t matchup and we get our second loss… most likely drop out of top 25…

        • rphokc says:

like I said earlier, I enjoy your posts

        • Dana Rogers says:

Not sure what “lugubrious casing” is and certainly not having coffee w/ him at neighborhood cafe but as they constantly tell me – even a rooting hog… And I’ll raise you a dime.

Edit. Reads /s But was going for humorous

        • soonerinks says:

Agree, what he says certainly doesn’t bother me.

      • diablodejalisco says:

just don’t read his posts if they bother you. i think he knows what he is doing and he gets a kick out of everyone being annoyed. when you comment, you are playing into his hand. he does not bother me because i just think he is being a pain in the ass most of the time and he enjoys it.

    • DCinAZ says:

You’ve said this same sh*t every single year waiting for the season to come along and prove you right. LMAO!!!

      • RDC212 says:

Seriously, why do you guys not just block him? This is the crap he lives for.

        • DCinAZ says:

I don’t block stupid people. It prevents me from being able to ridicule them in public.

          • RDC212 says:

And you think you’re winning something? He’s an effing troll? Who’s the bigger idiot? The troll or the idiot who feeds him? It doesn’t matter how many times you call him out. It’s your responses that keep him coming back… Period.

          • DCinAZ says:

What keeps him coming back is any negative outcome of a game that validates his negative overall outlook. Has nothing to do with responses here. He believes he knows better than everybody else and anything that happens on the field that validates his outlook sends him racing to his computer to type “I told you so”. He doesn’t care about responses.
He cares about feeling validated because it makes him feel like he’s better than everybody else when in reality he just sits around waiting for events to match his perceptions and doesn’t really know sh*t. It’s pathetic and sad, and thus, mock worthy.

          • RDC212 says:

And if he ultimately realized that literally nobody even saw his drivel he would crawl back under his rock. Again, he thrives on getting a rise out of you.

          • DCinAZ says:

No he wouldn’t. He thinks it’s his job to evangelize his stupidity and convert you over to his side. Do you see how he opened his statement?

“is everyone finally realizing that I’m right??!… ”

This is what it’s all about. You’re dumb. He’s not. It’s not about responses. It’s about an idiot with an opinion that never comes to fruition not accepting that he’s an idiot.

          • RDC212 says:

Do you not realize that people reading and responding to that crap is exactly what drives him? Jesus, dude. He’s playing you like a damn fiddle. Don’t be so thick.

          • DCinAZ says:

No…..it’s not. It’s any negative event or outcome to a game that validates him. That’s what drives him. Who’s being thick here?

He’s mad that Stoops is still our coach and that we’re still in the BIG XII. Responses have nothing to do with that. He’s just like the mindless turds in the conference realignment thread on LT (probably is one of them). Our conference and our coaches are what’s wrong no matter what.

          • RDC212 says:

            Playing you like a fiddle.

          • DCinAZ says:

            Okay champ. Whatever you say.

          • Jpsooner23 says:

You are arguing with Stephen Dale on steroids BTW.

          • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

            Stephen Dale, approximately.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ6CVUcolQM

          • RDC212 says:

            That funny right there.

          • Stephen Dale says:

no one likes the little 12-2.. why do you hate me for that? …
I’m “mad at stoops because he will get us to natty eight.. but without him we are very mediocre… we need new..

          • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

I think he’s great. He’s a paragon of entertainment, spellbinding and enchanting.

For me, he’s like poking a rabid animal with a stick to see what he’d do.

          • RDC212 says:

Fair enough. I just don’t see the point in getting mad about it like people do. Amusement is another factor altogether, though.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

            Lesson learned here.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

Are you the same Stephan Dale who made comments about Hamabe, the gorilla on yahoo?

    • Sooner4life says:

Picture is a little fuzzier, comments are only at 8…. hmmmm who is this Steven Dale? Something fishy is going on

    • rphokc says:

too early, but think we’ll have a good handle on the season after the games played thru ut excluding this week

    • Rick says:

I’m one of the few that haven’t blocked you yet. Mainly, when you’re not in your “troll” mode you’re one of the most intelligent posters here. When the troll comes out I would rather just go to a proctoligist for a toothache than read through that dribble. PLEASE, bring the good SD back or I’ll join everyone else.

    • CrimsonNative says:

We did lose a lot of valuable players last year and it’s showing. Now, I wouldn’t say that the guys we have now, won’t be just as valuable in the future, but I think it will take them more than a few games to get where they need to be. I really thought this would be our year, but when those guys left early, it really set us behind again. We did a good job of masking the few weaknesses we had last year, but this year there are just too many to hide. I think next year we will be dealing with the same issues in the DB area, but be better everywhere else. So, maybe we can hope for a redemption run in 2018.

    • bommer85 says:

SD dalton is not a major loss you know that after watching houston whip him. but this team better get some fire in them, baker better settle down and be a game manager and let mixon andrews serine make plays. if we can find 2 decent WR 1 CB and 2 Ol we are good haha

      • LBS says:

You got that right. Watching this and the Clem game again, there were several occasions that Baker literally looked right at open WR or RB 10 yds in front of him and chose to scramble around instead. Kids got to be smart.

      • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Man, if you have an opportunity, go back and watch the 1 catch that AD Miller had. Overlooked it when I first watched the game, but it was a heck of a catch. Very athletic grab, snatched with his hands and he looked hungry to get it. I think all that AD needs is an opportunity. Might be buying a ticket on Jordan’s AD Miller fan train.

        • bommer85 says:

im all for him getting out there…IMO baxter and mead should be on the bench

          • Daryl says:

Baxter with his one catch made great play and move for a huge gain He just got the misfortune of a non-fumble being called a fumble that couldn’t get overturned

          • bommer85 says:

seems like a hard worker and a nice guy, but i want playmakers out there. he’s a decent player but this is OU. if they don’t have 1 better WR than him that says a lot about development and recruiting

          • Daryl says:

What have you seen to make think that? Baxter was a more than solid JUCO guy and when given opportunity he has made plays and gotten open. What have seen that tells you he is not a play maker?

          • soonermusic says:

2 receptions. Baxter made an 18 yd. grab (fumble) and a 9 yard catch, and was wide open on a couple of other key downs, but not thrown to. If he can continue to get as wide open as he was on those plays, he deserves some playing time.

          • Daryl says:

            You are correct. My bad.

        • SamSooner says:

Cabbage Patch, that’s a really great observation.

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

We have lost talent, sure. Good talent. But there is good talent on our squad yet. I would not be so quickly to bet the farm on a 4 loss season. We will know over the next 4 games. If we can get through that gauntlet unscathed, I believe we have the talent to run the table.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

Awww bless your lil heart. Prayers sent your way.

    • Brooklyn Sooner says:

A broken clock is right twice a day.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

You shouldn’t be in here after a loss because you are nowhere to be found after a win or when have the 3-5th best class for 2017. People askd where is SD after we crushed your ok st donkey humpers.

    • Malicong says:

I am amazed that so many people still have not realized this isn’t the real SD. You are way more positive.

      • KJ1123 says:

Yeah thats not SD. Its a Texsa fan trolling.

        • soonermusic says:

hope the mods deal with that, pronto. Not nearly funny enough to be funny, and I’m sure each of us on here would like to be able to post brilliant or annoying comments of our own without a proxy “helping out.” Glad you spotted it. I didn’t until you said something, although the punctuation should have given it away…:-) Disappointed that two folks can sign up with the same “nickname.” etc…

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Retired and have nothing else to do in southern Oklahoma?

    • metzker says:

I am not the only one with the LLAMA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i WAS NICE To yOU yesterday and today yOUr doing it again———————

  • UGA Sooner says:

Not sure if this has been mentioned. Been in class all day. Haven’t had time to read the comments. Does anyone else think Dalton and possibly Rodney Anderson don’t have the bodies to hold up in college ball? I hope it’s just a bad roll of the dice, but both have been injured 3 times in their short college careers

    • RDC212 says:

No. Just bad luck. Anderson is a beast.

      • UGA Sooner says:

I agree with that, but some bodies can’t hold up like others can. Hopefully Rodney can. I was very, very excited for him. Probably most excited about him over everyone else other than Andrews and Mixon

  • T. Rob says:

Whats going on TFB’ers? Looking for a big bounce back on the scoreboard this weekend.

    • RDC212 says:

Against ULM? Cool, I guess. Doesn’t really say much though.

    • ALar03 says:

Doesn’t your lil/ big bro play Chris Robison tomorrow? Is he excited to see who he’ll be blocking for in the coming years?

    • ColoradoSooner says:

Hi TRob. Yes, looking for a better game this week. How are you doing?

    • bommer85 says:

whats up T. rob…im looking for a few different pieces to bounce back…would be nice to see some issues fixed but we are in for a REAL test next weekend with tosu. a win against them could do a lot for the season going forward

T.Rob, Since no one has asked. What is the feeling of the recruits after you know!! Is their morale still good? And as always, Shout out to #SS17 and #ST18!!

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Have to put down the first brick this weekend and then build around that. There are a few things I hope to see.

  • Ibtwan says:

I was one of the doom and gloomers after we lost. We are in a battle with Texas with 5 star recruits we can never reel in. When we lose and they win it hurts us bad on the recruiting trail. This article articulates it better than I can. The Ohio State game will decide the future of the OU program.
    http://es.pn/2cg2UOY
    via @ESPN App http://es.pn/app

    • bommer85 says:

not an insider so can’t read the article

but obviously it hurts us bad, they out recruit us as it is. it doesn’t help that the media bashes us bad and texas is back. plus ESPN has a vesting interest in making texas a powerhouse, longhorn network anyone? Ya odds r stacked against us, so just win on the field and let it play out

      • Ibtwan says:

Espn actually talked us up quite a bit. Before I discovered the Brainiacs they were my main source of information and the reason for most of my hype this year.

    • Indy_sooner says:

Nothing we can do but focus on winning, Do that and the rest will come naturally. If we are 10-1 in November, this loss will be an afterthought. I can guarantee you that.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

      Bull spit.

    • Brooklyn Sooner says:

“The Ohio State game will decide the future of the OU program.”

That is such an incredibly foolish thing to say. Step off the ledge.
      http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/17336754/alabama-crimson-tide-notre-dame-fighting-irish-ohio-state-buckeyes-oklahoma-sooners-usc-trojans-lead-list-college-football-blue-bloods

      • Ibtwan says:

I should have said the next few years. We will discuss it afterwards. When the millennial recruits see who’s winning. I hope you’re right or I’m right and we win.

        • Brooklyn Sooner says:

I understand. It was disappointing. But let’s remember tOSU has one national championship in the last 45 years. Everyone but ‘Bama is in the same boat.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

What evidence is there that recruits chose a winning program? There are many other factors or else Miami, Texas, USC, Vols, Georgia, Florida wouldn’t get some of the top recruits. OU is winning that’s why we have the number 5 rated class to this point for 2017! No one expects this team to have a texass type 8-5, 9-4 season…SO LETS RELAX IT’S ONE GAME!

          • Ibtwan says:

We have ss17 because of our success last year. We got to the playoffs partly because we beat Tennessee. Have you noticed that after our most successful years we get the better recruits. Notice Alabama, Florida State and Ohio state recruiting? All have won national Championships lately. We are competing for Marvin Wilson with Texas and Jeffrey Okudah with tOSU. Need I say more? Our own moderators said that many recruits are waiting to see how the season plays out.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

You are talking about the top players fine. There are always battles. My point stands about other non-winning programs get some top recruits even over Bama! There are enough top players to go around. You are overreacting about one game. If OU loses 4 games this year, then it’s a coaching problem and that will be a bigger issue.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Oklahoma is the only team in NCAA history to have four coaches with 100 or more wins. The Oklahoma program is bigger than one coach, bigger than one season, and is certainly bigger than one game.

      • GoBoomSoon says:

Indeed! To think anything else seems strange.

How’s the new job? What are you doing? I ask because we both do software development work

        • Bob Edwards says:

The new job’s going OK. They had a big delivery the week after I started so everyone had more pressing tasks than finding the new guy something useful to do. This week has been better.

As for what I am doing, I’m working on a large modeling and simulation framework used for testing certain DOD systems. Initially I’m working on some of the infrastructure. Later on may get to do some HWIL work or work on some of the digital models.

          • GoBoomSoon says:

Glad jobs doing okay, first week is usually feet wet stuff. How is the culture change? I think you said this is a small company.

They do embedded systems then? Infrastructure so important. My husband likens it to a house, you need a strong foundation. So many “developers” focus on flashy UI stuff (most with poor usability) and understand it textbook spaghetti.

You using C or a DSL?

Sounds more exciting than my stuff. Always been on the applications side but we used to do big interesting projects for big companies but after my husband became quite ill I’ve just had to do little things I can pick up.

Mostly WordPress related (or PHP). I don’t mind PHP (my husband calls it the Frankestein language but he has broader experience) but it isn’t all that interesting in general. Gotta make ends meet though!

          • Bob Edwards says:

Culture is kind of weird. I’m working for a small company but their are subbing to a large one. Ends up being kind of a mixture of both.

Some of it’s embedded some of it’s external protocols. Basically there is a general infrastructures that they hook different systems and related simulations together. The actual systems require some form of software adapter that translates between what they speak. Usually that’s in C/C++.

Never really done PHP, though I’ve done a lot of different things. Got to keep the lights on first then worry about finding something interesting to do. I look at some of the cool new stuff and think I could do that, but I would be counted as a junior or mid level in those or I can go work on the stuff I’ve been doing for the last decade and they will pay me as a senior level. With my wife’s health issues it’s better to keep the income up to cover the medical expenses.

          • GoBoomSoon says:

Wasn’t sure if you were working for a product company or not.

Mostly did Microsoft stuff for many years (C# in particular) but PHP isn’t too bad but it is a mismash of lots of different things as lots of people added to it with no rhyme or reason. Functions that do virtually the same things and parameters in different orders and other weirdnesses. A core group though has been trying to clean it up and version 7 is definitely better and more consistent.

I agree, as my husband got worse (nothing as bad as your wife though!), I had to start taking over things like client interaction, marketing, application architecture and design, etc. He still helps when he can but I’m with you on keep the lights on is critical so I take little projects (a lot of WordPress). We had been creating things to sell online and have made about $40-50,000 over the last 8 years but I can’t do much of that in the current situation.

            Anyway, Boomer!

Every loss hurts. Even the ones we are suppose to lose. Been at this for over 50 yrs with OU and it does not get easier. But ONE GAME does not make or break a team. It is what you do after that marks the team. Get back on the wagon, drink the koolaid and sing Boomer Sooner. I just know when i die i will be Sooner Dead. BOOMER

    • Won says:

the future has already been ceded to other institutions and conferences with the foresight to change rather than sit back and wait … complacency has a cost… 15 + years since the last championship… maybe OU did invent it but others are better in practice…

pretty sad when the biggest news is a stadium update and not what happens inside on the field….

    • brainpimp says:

      Lighten up, Francis.

    • Malicong says:

I don’t really care what logic is used, one game will never decide the fate of any program. If they lose to Ohio St, TCU, Texas, and another down the line, then maybe we can talk about this season having an effect on the future. SS17 isn’t going to all of a sudden fall apart because of a couple of losses to top 10 teams.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Anybody know of any official visitors other than Phillips this weekend? I think Draper will be here for unofficial as I assume many other local commits.

  • metzker says:

  • Malicong says:

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to break this out so soon in the season but the mood in here is unacceptable. OU will be fine. They were clearly the more talented team last week and puked down their leg to a fired up team.
What I really got from the game saturday…STOP PLAYING TOUGH TEAMS IN THE SEASON OPENER. Save them for the second or third game to get the rust off and the stupidity ironed out.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Exactly. Like OSU did this season.

    • DCinAZ says:

How about we just be ready to play from the get-go like the other big program teams are? How about that? Houston isn’t USC or Notre Dame.

      • Malicong says:

        That would be awesome.

      • Michael says:

Houston would beat both of those teams this year

      • Ura Mazin says:

Malicong may just be looking at it from the perspective of trying to work within out limitations. Kind of like when OU should have stopped scheduling Miami back in the 80’s. (Sorry to bring back painful memories. I sure hated Jimmy Johnson’s teams back then.)
OU seems to need a “preseason game” or two to work off the rust against an opposing team that’s not quite as mean as Houston was.
        lol
ULM fits the bill. Coaches say never look past an opponent, but Saturday obviously is the day to get ready for tOSU.
        BOOMER SOONER!

    • SamSooner says:

I’d be willing to bet Houston was one of those teams to get the rust out for tOSU. They were better than expected. But, I agree, we still should have won that game and OU will be fine.

    • Super Keith says:

To be fair, Houston wasn’t really a “tough” game when it was scheduled. At that time it was like playing a Minnesota or Duke now. Not bad teams at all, but certainly not top 10 teams.

  • GoBoomSoon says:

In Saturday’s game, because ULM is so outmatched, what should I look for to see if OU is making meaningful changes to improve from the Houston game?

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Baker makes a quick read and gets the ball out for 8 yard gains on first down giving us 2nd and 2, and then we bust Perine/ Mixon for 7-9 more.

      • GoBoomSoon says:

Thanks guys. How can I tell, in general, that this isn’t just because ULM is so much worse – not counting the quick reads which is something I’ll try to look for.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

We won’t be able to tell if it’s because ULM is weak. But the old adage “it’s about us, not them” applies even for the OSU game.

          • GoBoomSoon says:

So true! Just want to make sure we are continually improving and understand how to see that when watching us play.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Can OU pound it on 3rd and 2?
Will Baker read his checkdown & use it?
Pressure with a 4 man rush.
      Tackling

      • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Was really frustrated when we could not convert from 2nd and 2 last week. I believe that Perine was out that series, but we cannot struggle in short yardage and goal line.

        • GoBoomSoon says:

Isn’t Joe way more than good and tough enough to get those short yardage plays?

          • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

I think so, but even Joe has limits. Short yardage running has always struck me as a reflection of team attitude. Really have to exert an unbending will as a unit in short yardage.

          • GoBoomSoon says:

CP thanks, That makes sense. Appreciate the explanation.

          • soonerinks says:

Short yardage is all about the attitude of the OL. If you don’t have a nasty streak you are going to fail more than succeed no matter who the RB.

          • Ibtwan says:

I like Perine in short yardage. We’ve seen him hit at the line of scrimmage and his balance and power enables him to bounce off and get keep moving forward.

      • Rick says:

I agree, Bake looking too far down field , and holding the ball too long, and db mistakes fixed.

      • TSFFKAG says:

Execution at all levels in every aspect

  • SamSooner says:

Anyone see HWMNBN? Is he wearing that invisibility cloak, again?

  • Matt says:

is it possible that OU’s wide line splits are hurting them more than helping? Preventing pulling blockers from reaching their targets in time and allowing quick d-linemen an advantage in space to knife in the backfield?

  • Kody K. says:

Mixon can eat some yards up quick! I’m so impressed by how he gets down field with precision. I know we got to feed Perine the rock but JM is a dynamic, bigger, stronger Reggie Bush. I know Lincoln wants to get the ball spread around but we have some studs.

Anyone know what happened to the Big XII No Huddle show on FSSW? I record all of those every year to re-watch our game and others but haven’t seen one yet this season.

  • soonermusic says:

I think the fact that the defense kept Ward to a total of 1 yard is significant. No matter how you slice it, that requires a level of discipline and soundness of assignment that we often haven’t seen. I’ll be astonished if anyone else Houston plays can do that. It’s one of those things that, imho, might turn out to be an indicator of the defense coming together in a big way.

Yes, Houston was able to complete several spectacular third and long conversions, and had some other plays available, if Ward had made even more spectacular throws. But don’t forget, Houston went 13 and 1 !, last year and beat a favored Fla. State in a bowl game. this is not a clueless non-power five school any more. While I don’t think they’ll go undefeated, they will have a pretty good season, and after you see what Ward does to others, I think how Mike’s D contained him may turn out to look pretty impressive. We’ll have to wait and see…

    • Spolarbear72 says:

No offense but he didn’t need to run & possibly getting injured when he was torching us through the air.

      • soonermusic says:

Maybe so, and you’re certainly entitled to your opinion on that, but he did run 18 times, some scramble, some designed runs. To me, I didn’t see any evidence that he was trying to avoid injury. He was just contained pretty well. Might not mean anything, or it might. We’ll see in a couple of weeks, I suspect…:-)

It’s just me in my brown uniform getting mugged by a whole texass girls sports team at the Dellta airline counter. BOOMER!! Holding it down in here in Ohio for OUr team.

          • paganpink says:

Don’t back and you won’t have an avoidable accident. Don’t have an avoidable accident and you’ll get there sooner or later. Simple huh?

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Haha yeah it is. I’ve try to qualify twice. Got dq’d on my 29th day the 1st time for working through my lunch breaks. Then this last time I dq’d myself because they exercised the 90 days to work you 30 rule. So I was working at most 2 days a week qualifying and bringing home $70- $140 a week with a wife and 3 kids. So I had to do what I had to do.

          • paganpink says:

Hang in there. I used to work in HR as well as almost every other job and I’ve seen a lot of folks bail just before a group went into feeders or retired or something suddenly opening up a lot of driver spots. But also tell the center manager how bad you want the job and be reliable. Then they’re pulling for you.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Absolutely. My dad is a driver at the same center, and his supervisors love him. I work my ass off so a) he doesn’t have to hear them say I’m a shitty worker and b) the Corps instilled a a work ethic in me like no other.

          • paganpink says:

I don’t know whether anyone ever covered the history with you but up until the 1950’s they only hired ex-military at UPS. I’m not sure Jim Casey ever served but pretty much everyone he and his brother hired after world war 1 were servicemen! You sound like a good one.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Yes I did know that. Casy was a great guy. Unfortunately it’s nothing like it used to be with him gone. Know a few guys that were at UPS 50 years ago and they talk about how they got to interact with customer’s and were treated way different than we are nowadays. Seems at least here there is too much of a rift between management and hourly employee’s, and everyone is trying to screw the other over.

          • paganpink says:

That is a bad deal. It started when they cut back on management to cover all of the union benefits from a new contract in the 80’s. A center supervisor was limited to no more then 13 drivers as recently as the mid 1980’s. They knew everyone well, rode with them several times a year and it ran like clockwork. Then in order to save money they assigned more and more until now they may have more then a hundred people assigned to them. You don’t even have time to answer everyone’s questions or get them supplies, much less know what’s going on with their lives. I didn’t like it either and so I retired at 55 after 35 years there. It’s still a good company but its not the same. And since I retired from management my benefits aren’t nearly as good as yours since you still get incredible coverages that both management and hourlies both used to have that almost no one has any more at other companies.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Absolutely. I can’t complain about my benefits at all. I started there at 18 and have 10 years in now. I’ll have 40 years in and only be 58 so it’s definitely a big plus. I just hate too now with all the technology how much you’re tracked and how they know when you stop to pee. Everything with them now is so numbers driven it’s insane. And what bothers me most is the numbers are created by people who sit behind a computer desk, not the people doing the work. But it is a good company to work for if you can have thick skin.

          • paganpink says:

Yes. My son in law and his brother (didn’t used to allow relatives either) are both drivers now and they say the same thing. I was in Industrial Engineering for several years and when we did an area trace or a time study we were expected to go out and show it would minimize the miles and save time. All of us supervisors were ex-drivers ourselves. But as you know they started hiring more females and since there weren’t enough who had driven then they hired off the street and then eventually men as well, even though we had had a policy of promotion from within for 8 or 9 decades. It didn’t ensure all the supervisors were perfect- but they had been people that had done the job you were doing and done it well or they would have never been promoted. There is much less of that now.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Yes there is, much less of it and it’s unfortunate. And that’s how it should be because then your on road supervisors and center managers know what it’s like. Now you just have to have a degree and can become a supervisor and the drivers have no respect for them.

          • paganpink says:

            That’s messed up., I agree.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

The on road supervisor who disqualified me for working through my lunch breaks couldn’t qualify as a driver, he failed. And his degree was in Meteorology, which I’m not sure how that prepares you for UPS.

          • paganpink says:

On top of that that was considered personal time and you could do what you wanted. But then some drivers claimed they weren’t getting the 1 hour lunch and break promised in the contract and the Company had to pay a lot of money in a class action suit – and were forced to start using the boards to force it on people and discipline them even though it may have helped everyone involved not to. Lawyers.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Right. It just sucks because the lazy drivers use the union to their full advantage and abuse the system. I know a guy who guys out with 80 stops everyday because he’s abused the system and management doesn’t want to deal with him. When he’s on vacation his route goes out with 150 stops and the coverage driver is back before he is with only 80 stops.

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Great story way to represent. I was a limo / private car service driver during the 2005 Natty and had a pick up at Burbank airport. I am waiting at Southwest airlines when the flight lands with about 50 shorthorn fans coming in and I am the first person they see at the gate and I am posing the reverse horns. Two guys walk by and say you better reverse those fingers or someone’s liable to break em off.” I just laughed. No one else said a thing.

    • SamSooner says:

      Who is this, Scott?

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

My question is if Cobb or PJ or Motley can’t give us some solid Cb work…couldn’t Will play cb? We should have better luck at replacing his position no?

      • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

I am really curious to know how well Khalil Houghton can play safety. If we are really that pressed for a corner, I suspect Steven Parker is athletic enough to give us the production we need at CB. That could work out if Houghton can hold down the safety spot.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

That’s a good call. I mean there are options. Some recent posters here are pressing all kinds of panic buttons.

        • Sooner Ray says:

Parker can go free, strong, or NB but I don’t know if he’s corner material. Could he have played better in the Houston game than Dakota? Probably yes.

  • SoonerBornDFW says:

I love Our coaches, but why in the world did Dakota Austin start last Saturday? If they think that he’s the best we’ve got at CB then obviously talent is an issue. Keep Parrish cobb as starter for now. He was better than Austin, and he’s only going to get better.

    • Spitting Bull says:

Senior with the most experience would be my guess. Now Mike Stoops is basically saying he’s benched. They only seem to talk about his replacement as if he is no longer in the competition. Which would be a mistake in my opinion.

      • Deake says:

This is what I don’t understand. How did Dakota go from being the starter to 3rd on the depth chart? The coaches couldn’t figure this out during camp?

I know it’s really late in Oklahoma and around the US. But since 2010 we have had a lot of wash outs or guys who could not push for playing time. Perhaps this is the issue in some games. We did well last year, but attrition of recruiting classes will hurt. Go back and make a list of those who left or got kick off with those who actually played and you’ll see recruiting sucked from 2010-2015.
