Sooners Add Penn State Grad Transfer WR Geno Lewis

Image via USA Today

Penn State wide receiver Geno Lewis announced via his Twitter that he will be transferring to Oklahoma to play out his final year of eligibility.

As a grad transfer, Lewis will be immediately eligible to play next season and could immediately bolster a deep, but somewhat inexperienced OU wide receiver position group. Lewis put up 90 catches for 1,181 yards & eights TDs during his three years at Penn State.

Obviously this situation is reminiscent of former PSU/OU wide receiver Justin Brown, who came to Norman under shall we say unique circumstance but quickly found a productive role in the offense.

Hope he can bolster his NFL stock while at OU. Not sure he is the go to receiver we are looking for though.

  • Bill Holder says:

Does that mean Velus goes elsewhere?

    • Brian says:

Not at all. Velus has 3-4 years with us. He shouldn’t be worried about this.

It might put us out of the Javon Wims recruitment.

      • OUWade says:

there is question on whether the offer to Quartney Davis might mean that Jones is going elsewhere, though. But, Lewis shouldn’t even be a consideration for either of those guys.

      • Stephen Dale says:

Wims is committed to Georgia. He isn’t backing out of a coveted SEC scholarship to play in the Little 12-2………..

      • Bill Holder says:

I realize he has 3-4 yrs if we sign him. I’m just wondering if the reason we are taking the transfer is because the coaching staff believe we will miss on Jones.

  • KJ1123 says:

That’s cool. He may come in handy when we play tOSU.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

If the staff likes him, I guess that is enough. Probably means we’re either missing out on a prospect or two us fans think we’re still in on, or somebody currently on the team is leaving that we aren’t expecting. I’m just not sure you take Lewis if you know everybody is coming back and OU is getting Velus and Quartney.

  • soonerinks says:

Welcome to the OU family, Geno. Wish you great success here and hope you enjoy your time in Norman.

Any idea where else he had offers to transfer to?

  • Eddie and Amber says:

Nice to have that experience on board. BOOM!!!

  • kt-raida says:

I dont think we are missing out on current targets or have unannounced transfers, I believe we are just getting an experienced player for a year. hope he can be as productive as Justin brown

  • bjwalker82 says:

    Nice!

  • rphokc says:

    can he return punts

  • Slim Sooner says:

    Boom!!

  • Slim Sooner says:

    Boom!!

  • j l says:

Underwhelming numbers, but i trust the coaches. These 1/2 year players are nice, but we need some HS kids, cant simply rely on JUCO’s and transfers.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Those numbers, as I understand it, are very much a product of the Penn State offense and primarily the reason/s behind his transfer.

      • j l says:

Think hes a direct replacement for shep, or would dede slide in for shep and this kid take dede’s spot?

      • Clint Lenard says:

Yeah, from what I understand the line gave up more sacks than every other school in the country. Probably going to slow down passing offense production.

      • Fear The Magic says:

Those numbers might be a product of the Penn State offense but that doesnt explain why he only started 3 of 13 games for them.

      • Indy_sooner says:

Playing devil’s advocate…if he was good, wouldn’t he start? Brown’s transfer had everything to do with the Sandursky issue and dude was going to start for them I thought…

      • Stephen Dale says:

This transfer says two things very clearly : 1.) OU coaches are concerned about the lack of production returning for next season ; 2) WR recruiting is not going well……Lewis offers OU an experienced D-1 receiver which fits an OU need . Lewis also offers OU a 1 yr hiatus from a lack of depth and allows Lincoln Riley another year to prove his offense is receiver – friendly to HS talent.. Rather than risk getting neither Jones or Mims , OU cinched getting a receiver, even for 1 yr……….I think it was a wise move by Bob Stoops.. Good receivers are available in every class………..and it is a position true frosh can excel at with little experience………

    • Hollerback says:

That is just the day and age. More and more transfers, if you don’t take them then you are missing out on a pipeline. Unless Bob starts over-signing classes, then OU will always be a young team and transfer will help.

      • j l says:

I dont disagree, but transfers/juco’s need to be a supplement, not the heart of your WR corp.
        Need some 4 year kids.

  • Jason Vos says:

If you put up those numbers in Penn State offense as a WR, you deserve a medal

  • Bob Edwards says:

Is he enrolling this semester or at a later date?

    • JD says:

You have to think he is enrolling for this semester with the timing of his decision and since he only has one year to play he better get a jump

      • Bob Edwards says:

It depends on when he graduates, though you are probably right. However, if he doesn’t come until Summer it could affect whether he uses up a NSD scholly.

        • JD says:

Those schollys don’t get used until the kids arrive…see sec…oh you can’t be here we don’t have room for you…plus he thanked his advisors for helping him get his PState degree

  • SoonerGray says:

I DO NOT get this? Dude doesn’t even start for Penn State and we’re in a tight scholly sitch as it is? He was passed on the depth chart by younger players and we somehow offer a better shot at playing time than PSU?! Super frustrating. I can’t believe we aren’t able to develop some of the young guys on the squad (Green, Smallwood, Mead, Todd, Humphrey, Miller) to compliment Westbrook, Baxter and Andrews and allow us to use scholarships on high school talents. SMH

    • Soonerfan24 says:

No offense, but the coaches are a hell of a lot smarter than you and me. Have some faith

      • SoonerGray says:

I agree with the coaches knowing much more about football and their program than I. However, I’m fairly certain this is a ‘discussion forum’. Therefore, I reserve the right to discuss the issue and my lack of understanding.

        • John Garner says:

Agree except with the “GFY”. That doesn’t foster good relations. I’m like you though. I don’t understand how this guy helps us but I also agree that the coaches know more about it than me.

    • MrBigsby says:

Looks like someone doesn’t understand the game of football.

      • SoonerGray says:

Brilliant retort Mr.Big….thanks so much for your input. GFY

        • MrBigsby says:

I’m fairly certain this is a ‘discussion forum’. Therefore, I reserve the right to discuss the issue and point out your lack of understanding.

          • SoonerGray says:

You did neither. Just insulted me with no evidence. Try again.

          • MrBigsby says:

If you’re insulted by that, I really don’t need to present any evidence. It’s funny how easy it is to get under one’s skin with only the truth.

          • SoonerGray says:

Your truth is a statement that I don’t understand football…..that’s it. NO point, NO evidence, just insult. You’re TRYING to get under my skin and if you think that’s funny, that makes you evil. Congrats

          • MrBigsby says:

Trying? Your replies show I did more than try.

          • SoonerLove says:

You’re another immature homer. Shut up.

          • MrBigsby says:

Yes, I’m immature, but I’m no homer!! And by “another”, you mean there’s more? Please point me in the direction of my kind.

          • SoonerLove says:

I think I flushed the rest of them down the toilet 30 min ago.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Thanks for saving me some typing and I share your frustration….This ^^ exactly.

    • JD says:

We need 5 to 6 to play at a high level immediately. We are coming out of the gates against some touch competition next year. I still think Green is gonna be a stud..possibly Miller. Mead will be a junior and maybe he started getting it since he played in the bowl…Quick just didn’t impress me much…that said, the coaches know what they have and what they want. Lewis will only count against us for a year (if he comes this spring)

      • SoonerGray says:

Yah, we def need some help and fast, for sure. I like the idea of moving Quick to defense. Mead and Green just seem like they need more game experience. Those drops have to be nerves.

I know the coaches know what they’re doing, and maybe Geno was dinged up last year and that’s why he was passed on the depth chart? IDK

It just frustrates me that these stud high school WRs are developing? There seems to be a trend….

        • JD says:

Well most guys don’t contribute right away..there are the few exceptions. I think you need to make an impact by your junior year and we are there with a few guys. We are pretty young at wr and just changed offense a year ago. There will be a lot of reps going around this spring so hopefully we see some improvements next year early on

          • SoonerGray says:

Yah, I really do think Green/Mead/Miller will step up and contribute. Perhaps this move is because we don’t think Mims is realistic. I would love to get that stud in Crimson and Cream.

          • SoonerLove says:

I think most of our WR that turned out to be the best ones played as freshmen and sophomores and were impactful (Mark Clayton, Kenny Stills, Ryan Broyles, Malcolm Kelly, Manuel Johnson, Juaquin Iglesias, Sterling Shepherd, etc…….)

          • JD says:

yep and thats why Im not completely worried about some of the young guys but Quick Smallwood (he was hurt though) and Todd are now or never

          • SoonerLove says:

My point JD was that none of our young guys played or bet yet had any success this season, so I think it’s a bad sign that they might not be developing into nice players or they may not turn out to the caliber that will help us contend for a title. Not saying they wont either, just saying it might be a bad sign.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well, when Norvell was here, we had only 2-3 guys who could actually do something. This year, we had more. We’ll be alright. I just want some more guys with 4-3 4-4 speed.

          • SoonerLove says:

This year we only had Sterling, Dede, and sometimes Andrews. Baxter was rarely used and didn’t play much. Neal sucked. Mead and Green played maybe 3 downs I think.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Of course it depends on the QB read. Quick, Neal, Baxter all contributed. Neal dropped some passes though.

          • SoonerLove says:

Contributed, yes. Enough to make OU a championship offense, no.

          • JD says:

Where we lacked a championship offense was on the line of scrimmage. Neal dropped a few but made far more plays than he didn’t. Just because he didn’t become an all american is no reason to say he sucked. That can be reserved for our pass protection

          • SoonerLove says:

I agree about the O-line, but our receivers (besides Dede and Sterling) were not on the level that some of the guys Heupel, White, Thompson, and Bradford had to throw to.

      • blaster1371 says:

I think every pass quick has caught has been up against the sideline. I would love to see what he could do in the middle of the field.

        • JD says:

The few chances he had to take it inside he chose the wrong way. He has potential, he just hasn’t shown it yet. He will have every opportunity now that Shep is gone

    • SoonerLove says:

I agree, we needed to bring in some highly touted recruits at WR, since the guys we have that you mentioned in parenthesis didn’t develop or turn out to be quality WRs. Doesn’t look like we’re going to land anything at WR this year, so Baker wont have very many targets to throw to. Very frustrating.

    • soonermusic says:

Maybe that’s why Penn State’s coaches are at Penn State and our coaches are at OU…:-)

    • CTSooner says:

You gotta figure there is someone in that group, or redshirt that won’t be able to make the field next year and that means a scholly is freeing up.

  • Zack says:

Not overly thrilled with this one but at least it’s only a one year rental. More upside than risk IMO. Would have rather had 2 open spots for Davis and jones.

  • h-townsooner says:

Cmon Jordan, he deserves a boom too.

  • Sooner Ray says:

I’ll call this a boom be it good or bad. Hope he proves as productive as some of our other transfer receivers.

  • Mizuno44 says:

Geno Lewis was a 4* recruit, 4.5 sec 40, underutilized but very talented. Transfers here and can plug in immediately, looking for a chance to have a big statistical year in our system. Our transfers seem to be working out lately, welcome aboard Geno!

  • soonermusic says:

jmho, but i thought the video looked pretty impressive. Looks to me like he might be just the kind of receiver you want in this system. You never know till he gets in there, of course, but I certainly wouldn’t rule him out at all, based upon what I saw.

  • Chris White says:

Pretty good pickup here, very low risk and hopefully high reward. He seems like a Durron Neal build and route running wise but he is very aggressive at high pointing the ball. I think he will see the field but I really want to see Jordan Smallwood. It has been awhile since we had a big strong receiver to go along with our many finesse type

  • blaster1371 says:

  • HoustonChiver says:

I don’t understand anyone who is dogging this transfer. The guy has proven he can play in a tough conference, and transfers/JUCOs have been our best receivers in the past 5 years other than Shep & Stills.

  • Jim Haggerty says:

you have to realize geno was a bill Obrien recruit, just look at his production as a redshirt freshman.
He is extremely talented and has verticle leaping ability that will prove huge in 1 on 1 matchup’s
Franklin in my opinion made a very poor judgement call by under utilizing geno’s talent and in many other area’s as well and thus a lot of departures in both coaches and players
I’m expecting a break out year for Geno Lewis
