OU vs. Houston Kickoff Time & TV Announced

Image via houstonsports.org

On Monday, Oklahoma launched their promotion for the 2016 season opener against the Houston Cougars calling it “the nation’s best game on opening weekend.”

Evidently ESPN didn’t agree.

Because on Tuesday the worldwide leader put out a press release announcing the kickoff times and television specifics for said opening weekend of September 3rd, and OU vs. Houston is set…wait for it…to kick in the illustrious 11am (central, noon eastern) window, but will at least air nationally on ABC.

Both Alabama vs. USC (7pm CT, ABC) and Clemson vs. Auburn (8pm CT, ESPN) got the prime time slots, while LSU vs. Wisconsin got the 2:30pm (CT) ABC national window.

Never too early to start complaining about 11am kickoffs, am I right?

  • Dustin says:

Can’t wait to hear Bob’s thoughts on this.

    • SamSooner says:

Yep. Some times I wouldn’t mind being on an island where the only agenda is eating and sleeping. I’m so tired of corporation like ESPiN pushing their agenda.

      • Dustin says:

I’m sure Fox would love to televise this game at 2:30 or 6:00.

        • SamSooner says:

And the DOJ has no issue with ESPiN having this kind of control over content. That seems as if they’re controlling access, creating limited access to who you have to go to to purchase a product or service. I don’t see how you can force Microsoft make its operating system and programs work with other programs and operating systems and leave ESPiN alone.

  • SamSooner says:

The Bama vs USC and Clemson vs Auburn are good match ups. But I don’t understand the 11am kick off for OU vs Houston. That is going to be a good game and deserves a later time slot.

You will never be able to convince me that there isn’t an agenda. That game is every bit as good as LSU vs Wisconsin. In fact, I would bet OU or Houston could easily defeat either of those teams.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

The problem likely is less national interest in Houston than either Wisky or LSU. And obviously some self promotion came into play too for SEC,SEC,SEC!

      • Stephen Dale says:

All the more reason why OU would benefit from being in the SEC…..

        • Mark_in_VA says:

You’re preaching to the choir. That’s the obvious, best solution for OU from my perspective.

          • Stephen Dale says:

yep, but Boren, Stoops, and Castigleone are afraid to make such a move lest OU lapse into another era of insignificance.

    • Bob Edwards says:

You aren’t paranoid if they really are out to get you.

      • SamSooner says:

        Good morning, Bob!

    • Ura Hogg says:

LSU is going to be propped up even more than they were last year. The plan is the winner of LSU/Bama is supposed to have a clear path to the CFP.

      • SamSooner says:

LSU hasn’t solved Bama. And, I really don’t understand it. There’s not spectacular/strikes fear in me about what Bama does. Clemson should have beat Bama but they were probably caught up in the “worship complex.”

        • Ura Hogg says:

What Bama does is almost always pretty simple. Line up the current best collection of athletes (at least according to ratings) and see what happens. Because that was expected by Clemson, the TE play caught them off guard and that lost them the game. But, yeah, I think a little of the “worship complex” played a factor, especially with Swinney who played for Bama.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

LSU can’t pass gas at this stage of offensive development.

    • DCinAZ says:

Why would any of you think the Houston game would even sniff a better primetime slot? That’s just not being realistic compared to what other games are on that day. It’s not a conspiracy. It’s about viewers. OU/Houston won’t draw anywhere near as many viewers as the other marquee matchups for that Saturday. Not even close. That’s why playing Houston is pointless for us.

      • SamSooner says:

OU’s brand alone should get them a primetime slot, forget Houston. If Alabama played Houston, you could bet they would be scheduled in the ideal time slot.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

          Boom!

        • SoonerSpock says:

Perhaps had OU won 4 of the past 7 national championships we would have a better time slot. We did not and we don’t.

Ratings are about TV sets not quality on the field. Wisconsin will attract a big audience in the B1G for a SEC power 5 conference game. LSU will do the same in SEC country. The east and west coast will all so be intrigued by the matchup.

Houston will draw interest in Harris County, TX, a couple of adjoining counties and Houston Alums. That is about it. Enough said.

      • Stephen Dale says:

DC…..good points ! OU is expected to win ; Houston is expected to lose. Should the Cougars pull the upset, Houston will get several nite games while scourging a weak schedule….For OU , no ‘brownie points’ for whipping a team it was expected to whip……..

    • JB says:

Houston had 1 good year. Let’s not get carried away.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well, they are dangerous, and I want the national props for hammering a team that beat FSU last year.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

You are correct. I think the OU-Houston game will be between the two highest ranked teams going in. Correct? ESPN has an agenda.

      1. Promote the SEC (which gives SEC teams advantages for recruits, a greater national voice for ranking position. Conversely, they try to S#@& on Bob Stoops for what he said about the SEC and backed it up except for the A&M game.

      2. Try to get Texas back to being a top 10 team (they falsely believe Texas is important to football more important than OU in the Southwest-based on ratings). Colin Cowherd used to always mention Texas first when discussing Big 12 football until I emailed him with W-L records and championships OU has won since 2000. ESPN ignores the fact that “OU invented winning championships.”

      3. Most of their pundits have made comments about the “lack of defense” being played in the Big 12. A national myth.

      4. People like Andre Ware, Howard Cunningham, Desmond Howard, Chris Fowler are most likely to add a negative comment toward OU before they say something positive.

      • SamSooner says:

D, great post. You make some very valid points. Sorry about the delay in responding. I got pulled away and this is my first chance to respond.

      • Stephen Dale says:

OU is not ranked as high as either Clemson or Alabama in some polls…Who is Houston ? a 1 yr wonder that over powered a weak schedule ? Or a team / program that is competitive nationally ? ESPN’s agenda may be to simply reward the teams with the best name and productions with the better time slots….your ‘points’ are biased toward OU / Little 12-2.

    • SoonerSpock says:

The downside to the OU vs Houston game is Houston is not a big draw nationally. They have no following LSU, Wisconsin, USC, Alabama, Clemson and Auburn has large national or regional draw to fans.

Playing Houston OU just cannot quite make up for Houston’s lack of draw. I am pleased because we will get a large exposure. In these circumstances we must take off our Crimson colored glasses.

    • Stephen Dale says:

Houston has not earned a ‘big name gametime moniker’ yet…..secondly, OU had a good year last year but Clemson and Alabama played for a NC….Both have superior talent to the Sooners and both are rated more highly starting the season….had OU been playing USC, Clemson, Alabama, LSU, or Wisconsin in the opener , the Sooners might have received a more prestigious time slot…As it is, lets see if OU can take care of business in Houston……maybe the time slot is appropriate for the quality of the matchup…..

11 is too early to start drinking Saturday.

    • SamSooner says:

Well, I heard it said that “if you’re going to drink all day, you have to start in the morning.”

      • DR LEO MARVIN says:

Well I won’t not be drinking, So I will start in the morning then lol.

    • SoonerMagic76 says:

I don’t think that principle has every held true for OU vs Texsa

  • UGA Sooner says:

The 3 SEC teams get the late slots. What a surprise…

  • ⚡️Electric Sooner⚡️ says:

Houston doesn’t have the national name recognition that the other teams have. I’m not a that surprised with the 11:00 AM start.
I don’t like it but it is what it is, won’t stop us from kicking there A$$ I can tell you that!

  • woofman says:

Can’t help but wonder if this isn’t sign of national perception of the Big 12. Whether we think so or not, there is a growing national perception that the Big 12 is somewhere between the big boys and the gang of five conferences. If you look at the games mentioned above from that perspective, the time slot makes sense. Not saying I like it.

  • Doobie74OU says:

I agree with Sam below! Even I think the best game of opening weekend is Alabama vs USC. Game has a ton of national appeal. Also nothing wrong with the Clemson vs Auburn game. Auburn is a solid tram and Clemson was runner up last year and has a Heisman favorite at QB. The only real grip is the LSU vs Wisconsin game. I guess it could be argued that those teams have better name recognition than Houston who is pretty new to the national stage. Also Houston lost a lot from last year’s team, most of their offensive line will be freshman, replacing a couple wide receivers and several defensive players including their best corner and both Safties. So in my mind it comes down to national coverage on ABC at 11am or regional coverage at 230pm and I will take national coverage everytime. Plus OU vs OHIO State in week 2 is hands down the best game no argument to be made otherwise so we will get our evening slot the next week.

    • SamSooner says:

      I agree.

    • SoonerSpock says:

It is really quite simple. The B1G and SEC conference states have about 170 million people. The Big 12 conference has about 38 million people. The TV networks are selling advertising and they want the largest audience. The name Oklahoma cannot even approach offsetting the TV sets of 132 million people.

OU vs tOSU will get top draw September 17 but there is some competition from other games like USC vs Stanford, Notre Dame vs Michigan State, Alabama vs Ole Miss and Oregon vs Nebraska.

    • Stephen Dale says:

OU will get a national day game against tOSU. the networks generally schedule OU in nationally relevant games when they have a good chance of getting embarrassed and lose…so good for national recruiting.

  • cdzendolet says:

This will be my first OU game while in west coast time zone. Curious as to how weird a 9 am game will feel to me.

    • Doobie74OU says:

Just stay up all night Friday night and then watch the game. It will feel like the late game then! LOL!

    • Dick Bump says:

Get a good coffee pot. I lived in Europe for a few years, I got to where I liked morning (delayed) games. I didn’t doze off in the second half as much.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Make sure to eat plenty of breakfast if you plan on drinking

    • ouwooferman says:

it is weird. Having lived in Phoenix (which does not change time in spring/fall) was never easy to get use to it. Missed alot of games due to Little League etc.

    • StarfishPrime says:

I always LOVED the early kick-offs on Saturdays when I was in Cali. It takes some time, but all you need to do is embrace it:
      1) No matter what, go to be at a decent hour Friday night (no later than 1am).
      2) Set your alarm for 7:15am & open the blinds (don’t hit snooze!).
      3) Fix yourself a nice, strong Bloody Mary with a ripe celery stalk to stir it with.
      4) Turn on GameDay (put the volume up a tad louder than normal).
      5) Fix a solid breakfast (eggs, bacon, toast, some fruit, etc.).
      6) Brush your teeth (no shower needed) & change in to your Sooner gear.
      7) Settle in front of your selected TV with an ice, cold beer & prepare for victory!
That routine always did me right, & I never missed a 9am kick-off.

Not liking this early early game road season start against a top 15 team.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

They have their QB back too. But new O line. They can’t match us, if BS has OU motivated. Baker is assurance that the offense will be fired up…the D….?

This league is the Rodney Dangerfield of CFB

    • ouwooferman says:

So long as ESPN/ABC have TV rights to SEC and others or until FOX surpasses them self-serving activities will continue at the expense of the college athlete.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

Fox will have the RRSO sometime soon and it will get barely a peep over at the mothership

    • Stephen Dale says:

this league is the P5’s #5 ( bottom rated P5 conference)…OU will get national respect when it shifts to a better conference and proves itself against a better level of competition……

  • KJ1123 says:

Wut the funk? That’s frickin stupid. Well, I can at least get out of there on Sat instead of flying out Sunday.

    • ouwooferman says:

Hell man. Stay the night and enjoy some really great sea food or mexican.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Bob and Mike better have this team mentally prepared going in. Houston is taking it as it’s chance to continue their rise. This is no game to experiment. Use the pass to set up the run. Run the ball down their throats but come out throwing to get them off the LOS. Then Perine them little boys to death.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

    What a bunch of crap.

  • Cav66 says:

O.K. Well, hopefully that means we’ll be sitting in the clubhouse with a dominating win forcing all the ESecPN favorites to keep pace. Any recommendations on a good drink(s) to have with a Saturday brunch while watching the game?

Start with a Bloody Mary, move to Margaritas and have fajitas/chips dip at half.

          • hOUligan says:

And Scotch, for me, implies a good single malt, like Ardbeg or Arran or a few dozen others. Nice finish.

          • Cav66 says:

A good single malt for sure. I typically go with my time-tested Glenlivet, but I’m always willing to sample, and it sounds like you have put in some good research on the subject.

      • Cav66 says:

Thanks! Liking where your head is. Some breakfast burritos followed by fajitas/chips as the game/drinking goes along. Good flow.

  • hOUligan says:

Mornin’ and Boomer to THE TFB AM crew! I love OU. PO’d to see we’re in that early slot again. On the surface, though, USC name has more cache’ than UH, no matter the pre-season rankings. But definitely better than Lsu-Wiscy.

  • Jdizzle says:

11am is a NATIONAL time slot. That is why OU-Texas is always at 1130am. When will people learn…

    • KJ1123 says:

When Im not at the game, I dont mind it at all, but when Im in attendance I like to have time to enjoy all the pre-game stuff. And I know our players would rather not play 11 am games.

      • jimintexas says:

This^^^^. Those that require =>3 hours to get to the game miss a lot with the 11:00 games. Those that live locally or just watch on TV should not make assumptions that people don’t understand it being a NATIONAL slot. If you are going to invest more time traveling than the game takes, it is nice to enjoy the game day.

        • Dick Bump says:

I plan to be at the game and do a little tailgating with the enemy, so the early time sucks from that standpoint.

      • DrewChubbs says:

It’s just not a complete game day without the obligatory trip to Suger’s!

    • Fear The Magic says:

Or for that matter what are the chances that a tOSU vs Houston or Bama vs Houston game would be at 11am?

      • SoonerSpock says:

Perhaps this graphic will explain in part why who is playing determines when they play. It is all about TV viewing audience and despite OU’s historical record as a college football power it does not swing that big of a stick as a member of the Big 12 with a conference population base of 38 million when the B1G and SEC have population bases of better than 85 million.

As shown in the link below OU ranked #26 in average viewers behind 12 SEC schools, 7 B1G schools, 3 Pac 12 schools, 2 ACC schools and Notre Dame. 11 of the top 16 schools were SEC schools. Also 11 schools had a average viewing audience 150% greater than OU’s.

        http://texags.com/s/15550/infographic-2014-college-football-tv-ratings

  • ALar03 says:

No matter the rankings… Its the big 12, arguably the worst power 5 comference, vs a non power 5 school.. Bama vs USC on tradition alone is the top game though it’s probably gonna be a yawner

  • Bill Duncan says:

We cut out the west coast when we play 11am games. This is a joke that two top 10 teams from last year don’t get mid day or night game

    • KJ1123 says:

West coast really does get cut off. There are some spot obviously you can go and watch the game and enjoy some beverages, but forget doing a house party or bbq.

      • Dick Bump says:

Unless you have the house party the night before and serve ” the cure” during the game to the ones that didn’t make it home.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

I’m not going to this game, so I don’t care “too much” about the time. But that OU vs Ohio State game better be a pm kickoff.

    • Ura Hogg says:

It will be as long as it doesn’t conflict with any big SEC games. Then again, all SEC games are supposed to be big rivalry games, so…

  • KJ1123 says:

    • KatyOUdad says:

I’m not sure now. The Final Four was at NRG and they were not allowed to sell beer, because of some new NCAA rule. Makes no sense as UT sells beer at their on campus stadium.

  • @DallasSooner says:

You don’t cut out the West Coast; my buddy on the West Coast says there is nothing better than NFL season when you can wake up on Sunday morning, throw on the tv and you have football firing up.

  • John Garner says:

Wow, 1100 is 0900 for me. No sweat. I can’t stand waiting for the game to start. But clearly ESPin is pushing it’s SEC agenda.

  • KatyOUdad says:

We get the 11am time slot because no one cares about UH regardless of where they may be ranked preseason. All the other games involve large schools with big fan bases. OU will just kick a** and move on to ULM.

  • cush creekmont says:

Not a surprise since Houston is not a P5 school. My hope is having this one at 11:00 AM will cut down on the number of other OU 11 AM games. OU HOME games need to be afternoon or evening and NOT 11 AM like the fans have suffered with for too many years.

  • Bob Edwards says:

ESPN just doesn’t want people to see the team that ‘beat Bama’.

  • Slim Sooner says:

Here we go with early starts. Nuts!! Oh, well, just WIN anyway one at a time. Cougars are older women who like young men.

  • BoomCity89 says:

You always have to look at the positives of every situation. We now get to hang around the city of Houston while wearing our OU gear after a win. Plus anyone in Houston that week, that doesn’t live in Houston, can enjoy all the great seafood and mexican food! Plus starting your day off with a beer-a-rita is never a bad thing!

  • j l says:

Are you f*cking kidding me? 11 am slot for a top 10 matchup is complete crap. The disrespect is ridiculous.
