2016 “Breakout” Candidates

Image of AD Miller via OU Daily

A random Wednesday in early July may or may not be the best time to put something like this out, but as far as I’m concerned there’s really never a bad time to talk football so here goes.

My approach with these type of ‘prediction lists’ is to try and avoid the obvious. I mean, sure, one could predict someone like Mark Andrews or Charles Walker as a “breakout” candidate for this coming season as there is a fairly easy argument to be made that neither has really had that true “breakout” season yet. But how much credit would you really deserve for going out on that limb? I’d argue not much.

Different circumstances but similar situation with someone like Caleb Kelly. Yes, he’s a true freshman. But there are high expectations for the five-star LB recruit for a reason. So again, wouldn’t be much of a prediction to proclaim Kelly as a “breakout” candidate.

In years past I’ve had some notable hits and any number of misses, so I can assure you my feelings won’t be hurt if you quickly dismiss one, any, or all of these. With that said, here is who I’m betting on in 2016.

* AD Miller: Let me just tell you there’s a reason I’ve been saving this tweet for several months now. Because when the sophomore wide receiver has the season I believe he’s capable of having, I’m warning you right now I’ll be that really annoying guy retweeting their own tweet to show everyone (FULLY aware of how little they will care) just how right they were.

It’s certainly no secret the Sooners will be turning to a bevy of candidates this coming season in an effort to replace a program all-time great in Sterling Shepard. Specifically, OU is really looking for someone (or really someones) to step up and solidify one of those outside receiver spots. And with Miller’s size, speed, and ability to high point the football I think he is the ideal candidate.

I’ll also grant you at this point Miller isn’t exactly a “sleeper” pick to break out this season after a solid performance in OU’s spring game. But remember that tweet from a certain someone who was ‘in’ on Miller even before that Red/White game?  That’s right, this guy. (It’s already annoying, I get it.)

* Marquise Overton: You may not agree, but I consider this to be a risky pick. Not due to a lack of faith in Overton, far from it. But rather as a result of the guys around him that he’ll be competing with for playing time. Both Matt Romar and Jordan Wade have spent considerable time in this program and on the field, so Overton will have his work cut out for him when it comes to earning snaps.

And for the life of me I’ll never understand why they burned Overton’s redshirt last year — I get he played in eight games, but it couldn’t have been more than a handful of snaps in any of them — but that has long been a pet-peeve of mine so let’s move on.

My confidence in Overton stems from the fact I expect he’ll simply force the coaches hand. I think he’ll be too good for them to keep him off the field. Even in the limited number of snaps he got last season, I can recall multiple instances where he blew a play up and/or collapsed the pocket. His wrestling background and low center-of-gravity couldn’t possibly be more ideal for what OU asks of their NTs in this defensive scheme.

* Du’Vonta Lampkin: A second DL pick with a number of veterans presumably ahead of him as well. I don’t know what to tell ya, I just love living out on that edge!

Seriously though, I think the key here is my belief that Lampkin possesses the athleticism and versatility to play either inside or outside at defensive end. And yes, as I alluded to, you have guys like Matt Dimon and DJ Ward, even someone like Austin Roberts, already in place. But a quick glance at OU’s current roster will reveal DE isn’t exactly a spot with an overwhelming amount of depth.

Outside of that, I think Lampkin will be very similar to Overton in that his talent will demand time on the field.

* PJ Mbanasor: Full disclosure, I’m drinking the Super K Kool-Aid when it comes to this kid and I’m perfectly fine with it. I know all anyone can talk about when it comes to Mbanasor is that Tulsa game. Heck, some people (no shots, I swear) are even still writing about it. But what has never ceased to amaze me was just how quickly some were willing to write off a kid playing corner, as a true freshman, in his first start ever. I mean all due respect, but you realize how stupid that would be, right?

Mbanasor’s physical skills are undeniable and from everything I’ve heard, the kid has done nothing but continue to put in the extra work all spring and summer to improve his game. I get that he has some legitimate competition for a starting spot, but that’s the nature of his position and really college football in general at this level.

I just believe the physical tools are all there, he’s learned from last season, and this is the year it comes together for him.

* Kahlil Haughton: Have you heard about how the Big 12 tends to be a pass happy league? Breaking news, right? Well, I’ve been told that in a pass happy league you tend to play more DBs. Hence why I have the sophomore safety — another guy who didn’t get a redshirt so they could play almost exclusively on special teams — on my list of breakout candidates.

As we’ve discussed a number of times now on TFB, the expectation is that OU will spend a considerable amount of time in their nickel package. And, as you’re well aware, that will likely involve Will Johnson being on the field as the ‘nickel’ defensive back. But when the Sooners bring on a sixth DB, as they tend to do at times, I’m expecting Haughton to be that guy.

I’ll be really interested to see where he’s at once the roster is updated later this summer/fall, but even with the outdated spring roster at 6’1″ 195 Haughton is already nearly the same size as Ahmad Thomas. So he has the size to hold up against the run and we’ve been told he has a comparable ability to that of someone like Steven Parker to cover in space. Which would make him an ideal fit for that ‘dime’ DB role and possibly even earn him some time at ‘nickel’ to spell Johnson, if need be.

Alright, so those are my guys. But surely I’ve omitted at least one of yours, so jump on in to those comments and show everyone how much smarter you are than me.

    BOOMER FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!

  • metzker says:

    Thanks Jordan!

  • Tony B says:

    Nice FOOTBALL post.

  • metzker says:

Great on Q and Lamp i so agree!

    • Tony B says:

I concur we need that beef on the field and with their talent I can’t see them sitting and waiting all year. They’ll play and more than a few snaps a game by the time conference play rolls around.

  • Matt S. says:

Out of the kids you chose, I will go with Mbanasor as the top breakout candidate. Too athletic and hungry to be held back from the spotlight!

  • cush creekmont says:

The WHOLE O-line (well, perhaps one special LT is too obvious to be called a “breakout” player, but the other four spots are pretty darn “new” guys. BUT the talent is so much better at Ctr and guard that I still go with the whole O-line.

  • J.r. Kamm says:

Jordan, do you see Jon-Michael Terry redshirting?

    • Jordan Esco says:

I’d have to think so, but they burn years for guys all the time just playing mostly special teams so who knows.

  • Birddawg says:

    Great post Jordan!
    I
    want
    Football!!!

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Thanks for the post Jordan – great thoughts.

I might throw Rodney Anderson in as well. I know he had some great playing time last year before the injury, and I’m also fully aware of how stacked the backfield is, but I think he has some really nice speed and vision back there. Interested to see if he can earn some playing time and solidify himself a spot in the future

  • BoomCity89 says:

I’m excited about the WR group and who is going to step up. Last year’s top 5 catchers (in no particular order) were Shep, Neal, Westbrook, Baxter and Andrews. Who would you have as this years top 5 catchers? Joe Mixon will get a ton of looks but I’m looking at WR’s 🙂

    • ouwooferman says:

      Smallwood, Westbrook, Baxter, Lewis, Andrews

    • J.r. Kamm says:

I’d have to go with Westbrook, Baxter, Lewis, Andrews and tossup between Mead and Smallwood for the fifth slot.

  • ouwooferman says:

    No dogs on that list.

  • Randy says:

I agree on AD Miller the others I am not sure about yet.. Maybe too much depth (although) not as talented as the FR and SO waiting. Not giving up on PJ yet but not sure he will be ready, JT still worries me some so PJ does !

  • Birddawg says:

JT solidfying DB1 spot, PJ is going to have all the opportunity in the world to show he’s a “breakout” candidate more so than anyone on that list.
Just about every OC will be testing this young man and I think PJ’s going to burn em..
PJ is my prime “breakout” candidate.

  • Tim A says:

    Thx Jordan!

  • Randy says:

I will go with Dalton Rodriguez, Curtis Bolton, and Parnell Motley.

  • metzker says:

    Dalton Wood!

  • metzker says:

    Dalton Wood!

  • Tony B says:

I hope either Smallwood, Mead, Green, or Miller step up and surprise some people. With that size they need to be a threat to stretch the field this year.

  • cush creekmont says:

It is possible that a player “breaks out” at punt returner IF one is found and allowed to run. Not sure if BS will do that, but I can’t even guess who it might be – Maybe having punts returned will qualify as a “break out” in itself.

    • Tony B says:

If the Sooners actually start returning punts I will nominate BS himself as a breakout star! Not returning punts because you’re afraid of a fake or fumble qualifies as playing not to lose in my book. I hope he gains trust in a punt returner and brings that part of the game back to the Sooners.

      • cush creekmont says:

Still got stung by a fake even with the conservative play.

        • Tony B says:

Exactly so they might as well attempt a return. The riverboat gambler is pushing when it comes to punt returns.

          • cush creekmont says:

I fully agree with you Tony – just hope there is one sure-handed guy that gets a chance.

          • Crimson Clerity says:

At this point I am kind of up in the air? I mean I am confident that we didn’t see near the kind of full potential from Lincoln Riley last year. The biggest question is obviously at receiver for obvious reasins but they still have DD Westbrook and Lacoltan Bester.
To say championship I think is saying alot and I am a born fan but the test of this years sooner team’s ability to handle adversity will be decided in their first 2 ballgames with an opener with Houston which is an explosive top ten offense and a
Number 2 game hosting The Ohio State Buckeyes! Anything can happen in football but you can count the outcome of those two matchups as being the scale to judge who’s who this season! Did Clemson leave enough of a bad taste in the their mouths for them to have a little moxy? I think they do and I think if Baker Mayfield stays healthy they are a 10 win team almost certinly but we will see how this all shakes out.

  • BamaSooner#12! says:

Neville Gallimore will be in permanent BEAST MODE. That’s my “breakout” star.

  • 47 Straight OU Know says:

UGHHH, Can I get a roster list so as to make my determination’s. If you just point me in the right direction I will go find it. The only one I can find is from 2015.

  • Cole says:

I know he’s a freshman but I see Jordan Parker being a star. He’s going to challenge Austin, pj, and anyone else.

  • Daryl says:

    Cody Ford on Offense

    Obo and Austin on Defense.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Dru Samia becomes first team All Big 12.
Gallimore takes over a spot on the DL by end of the season
Mbanasor becomes what is expected of his skill set

  • T. says:

Dimitiri Flowers is my guy. I know the backfield is crowded and we have Andrews, but I look for him to have a Millard-Like impact this year and snag a few “sleeper” touchdowns.

  • SamSooner says:

While I think it will be PJ, mostly because he’s able to handle adverse circumstances, I’m going with Dahu Green. I think Dahu is hungry and really wants to seize the opportunity.

  • KJ1123 says:

I think PJ and AD will break out. With Dahu right there too. The kid can get open, just needs to haul it in.

    • SamSooner says:

Okay, KJ, this is scary. Are you copying me?

      • cush creekmont says:

You guys are just smart – Dahu fits because of the praise he got last August. He’ll certainly have a shot and one heck of a QB tossing the ball. It Andrews and Dede get too much attention, he could burn some teams.

        • SamSooner says:

I’d like to have him come on early so that it’s pick your poison. That will stress any defense.

      • KJ1123 says:

Did you say that already Sam?? Sorry.

    • DrewChubbs says:

Consider me a Dahu lean. Something felt right about that young man deciding to join us during the waning hours of recruitment and that fact that he’s an OKC metro product kinda makes me hope for him to do big things.

  • LandThieve3 says:

Geno Lewis. He didn’t transfer to sit on the bench

    • leatherneck1061 says:

Good pick. He only has one season to accomplish whatever he’s going to accomplish. My guess is he finds a way to make the most of it.

  • blaster1371 says:

The D-line will likely see a lot of players rotating in and out until a few seperate themselves as the studs of that unit. That is what I think the loss of Walker in the orange Bowl was felt most, Dimon got gassed and couldn’t put up much of a fight that second half. Walker shows glimpses of promise but even he has not yet staked a claim as a game changer. If Mike Stoops can be truly two or three deep at each position on the D-line and keep fresh and hungry guys in there then teams had better stand the hell by.

RE PJ: The kid will be a gamer. Starting those few games was a huge learning experience for him. Some kids come out of high school as simply the best athletes and they shine because they’re the biggest or fastest out there. . At the big boy level they have to become football players. PJ putting in the work shows he KNOWS what he needs to do. And when he starts playing with confidence then his ceiling goes through the roof.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I’m going with Mixon and before you say that’s too easy of a pick it’s because I’m saying he has a Christian McCaffrey type season with returns, receptions, and running it down people’s throats.

    • SamSooner says:

      I can see that.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Been saying it. Mixon is that dude. He needs the rock in his hands!

    • leatherneck1061 says:

Agreed. If he hadn’t lost a year he might have been a Heisman contender last year. Now that he has a season of experience under his belt, look out.

    • DrewChubbs says:

Man…I can’t disagree with your views on his ability at all. But I’m not so sure Bob will be willing to risk Mixon on returns this season. He and Samaje had a knack for both getting hurt at the same time. No one wants to see Joe or Samaje have an AD sophomore-like campaign with a persistent ankle injury all season.

EDIT: This is especially true if some of the young guns prove viable for return roles.

      • soonerSD says:

There have been times when I would have agreed with this mentality but not now. When you have two backs this talented and both are eligible to leave after this year…. get the ball in both their hands as much as possible. Especially, with a talent like Anderson waiting on the sidelines. Turn him loose IMO.

  • Krys Allen says:

For those that hold the TU game against PJ, just go back and watch the game Sanchez played against the Pukes. He got owned that whole game. Now I am not saying PJ will be any good, but other corners have had worse games and his was at least his first collegiate game.

    • Doobie74OU says:

They can look at that same TU game! If PJ hadn’t struggled so much everybody would have been talking about how Garrett was eating Sanchez alive. A lot of that 14 rec 160yd day was against Sanchez!

    • thebigdroot says:

OSU was getting away with a lot of offensive PI against Sanchez.

    • Brent says:

True. James Washington was just toying with Sanchez throughout that game.

      • SamSooner says:

Watch the game again and you will see there was offensive PI that wasn’t called. Plus, Sanchez slipped a few times.

        • BleedCrimson says:

Slipped. With a little help from his “friend”. Dude was pushing off a lot, wet turf, and Sanchez was at a size disadvantage. That equals to a bad day at the office. Not excuses, just facts.

          • SamSooner says:

Yep. Even so, BC, Sanchez was in good position.

          • BleedCrimson says:

I agree. I meant the offensive guy was pushing off. There were 2 key plays I remember in particular where he was in good position, and got pushed out of the way and it ended up either as a TD, or a big play.

          • SamSooner says:

I like OU players every year. I’m particularly excited about this group of players. I’m excited to see Samia, Alvarez, and Brown take the next leap in their maturation. I suspect Riley will be playing with a full deck because I really believe that every play will be a choice or run or pass.

          • BleedCrimson says:

I agree. I believe that the DB’s especially on D, and the O line will be quite a bit better with Alverez moving to center. Maybe not quite as talented as Ikard, but definitely bigger and stronger. Everything on the Oline starts with that position.

    • DrewChubbs says:

I’m not knocking the guy at all, but I think PJ stands out because of that sure interception the back of his helmet knocked down in the game. That one play pretty much summed up the game for him. He worked great all game. Had great position on just about everything thrown his way. He just didn’t have a nose for the ball. The fact that Tulsa shouldn’t have been in the game with us, yet they were, just amplified his easily corrected, inexperienced errors.

  • Maranatha846 says:

I’ll just say that some players mentioned here will see a lot of meaningful snaps or you won’t see them in 17′.

  • Randy says:

I am really intrigued by Parnell Motley, love the offers he had. And not sure if he is a WR or DB but is definitely a PR/KO returner.. His skill set reminds me of Antonio Perkins.

    • Doobie74OU says:

I wouldn’t mind seeing Motley and Cobb back returning KO and if they settle on a DB as PR then maybe Bob will take the handcuffs off and let the PR game get back to where it used to be.

      • Randy says:

Yeah, but we know it wont happen he does not or has not allowed true freshman back there.. I am more thinking of we are trying to find playmakers at WR and need depth at WR. Now if one of those two were to get Motley on the field then I can “maybe” see him returning punts or kicks. Not until then more than likely.

  • michael hammond says:

    Time 4 J.Mead 2 show up.

  • Doobie74OU says:

I think on offense I will go with Ben Powers he looks like he might have that nasty you need at OG and on defense I will go with Tay Evans, think Evans and Evans good be really good ILBS for OU this year!

  • oumike23 says:

Having watched AD Miller in some spring practices and scrimmage setting prior to red/white game, I totally agree that he could be a breakout guy! I was impressed in the spring…hope it translates to Saturday’s this fall.

  • SamSooner says:

What good to see is the disparity in who we all think will have a breakout year. That, in itself, is an indication of how much talent and potential this team has.

  • Dick Bump says:

Quick…I think I’ll go with Quick. They moved him for a reason and apparently it wasn’t a numbers issue. The WR side looks like the side needing bodies….Lot of talent, lot of choices.

  • luvsoonersA53 says:

My two breake out player’s S/T kick return Abdul Adams and Cobb RB Anderson DL Overton OL Harra guy??? WR between AD and guy from Penn State #BOOMER p.s. 2016 starting to feel like Christmas.

  • MikeyBoom says:

Dude I at worked super pumped about football season. KJ, Jordan, K or whoever, when do summer and fall practices start again? I’m excited to hear the news about the team

    • cush creekmont says:

For full practice info, have to wait till August, Mikey. But we do see some 7-on-7 reports in the summer. Anything more on those TFB?

  • SoonerfanTU says:

I could see one of Overton/Lampkin breaking out, but with the shear number of bodies we have on the DL, many of which have experience, might be tough for them both to break out. I like the talent of both though, and as was stated, Overton looked really good in a small number of snaps last season. Question…..is it tougher for the Oline to block guys if the Dline is consistently rotating talented players, and each has their own strengths? The comments about Overton’s low COG and wrestling background made me wonder that.

I’m guessing PJ realizes he isn’t where he needs to be to be starting at CB for OU, correct? Everything I’ve read appears to suggest that, I just hope he isn’t a kid that thinks the TU game was a fluke, and that he is ready. Sounds like he is working hard. There is a lot to like about the kid, but he moved more like a big corner in the limited time I saw him last year, and big corners can struggle at times against spread type receivers. I haven’t given up on him either, but he really needs to show more to deserve playing time.

I could also see DeBerry, Mark Jackson, or even Mykel Jones doing some stuff as well.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Was going to add, I really hope the staff gives some of the young dline guys a shot. I know we have a lot of upper-classmen who have played well, and are good players, but those younger guys all have more potential, IMO. We need a dominant dline to take the next step as a defensive unit, and to help replace what we lost in Striker.

  • Fear The Magic says:

    RB Anderson
    OL Ford
    WR AD
    DL Lampkin
    LB Tay Evans
DB Cobb ( call me crazy )

    • ouwooferman says:

Crazy. but not without merit, but that is a post for another day.

    • Sooner Ray says:

I like Anderson, just not sure he gets the number of carries this year to justify “breakout” but we’ll see. I also considered Cobb but not as a DB, rather the new return man.

      • Fear The Magic says:

I know what you’re saying about Andersons number of carries but I cant help but think that either Samaje or Mixon will probably be down for at least parts of the season due to ankles or other injuries. Rodney is the next man up and I have a feeling that he’ll put up some really good numbers.

        • Sooner Ray says:

In the case that a starter is down for a while, absolutely he could come in and be a major player.

      • soonerbred4ever says:

I agree with you on Cobb. He has speed you just have to get on the field.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Crazy azz white boy. Jk. I agree with everyone but Cobb, I’ve got to go with PJ in that slot.

  • Jed says:

    Gallimore

Great news fellas, my car is good to go! Just needed to dry out and get basically an entire engine flush. Thank god it wasn’t more serious than it was ??

  • j l says:

All of the above are good picks. Id add:

    Cody ford. austin, and bledsoe.

  • Brent says:

I just hope it’s not Austin Kendall

  • ALar03 says:

Offensively there are a lot of studs and onlyb1 ball to go around.. But I think Smallwood has a chance to breakout this year..and defensively gotta go with Mbanasor/Austin, whoever it is at The other corner spot is gonna get a lot of work the same way Thomas did last couple years and then Sanchez did when Colvin had his island on lockdown!! The opportunities will be there and I think they will show up more often than not!! And my bonus answer is S/T breakout player will be Chanse Sylvie!! For whatever reason like you said we have burned some red shirts for odd players with limited snaps but this kid is just gonna be a stud and will make it impossible to keep him off the field in some shape way or form.. Could even crack the dime formation Imo! Okay what are yalls thoughts

    • Oufreud says:

I think my pick is Abdul Adams. I know he won’t get a ton of action but the action he gets he’ll turn some heads. I think he’s gonna be a good one.

Oklahoma and Temple have agreed to a three-game football series beginning in 2024.

The Sooners will host the Owls on Aug. 31, 2024 and Sept. 2, 2028 in Norman. Oklahoma will play Temple in Philadelphia on Sept. 13, 2025.

OU has played the Owls twice, with the Sooners winning 9-6 at home in 1940 and Temple beating Oklahoma 14-7 in 1942 in Philadelphia.

Temple was 10-4 last season, its most wins since 1979.

The series with the owls gives he Sooners its first non-conference opponents in 2024 and 2028. In 2025, Oklahoma will also host Michigan in the first game of a home-and-home series.

    • Kelsta says:

I’ll probably catch hell for saying this but I’d donate $10 betting on ISU if I was in Vegas. I believe they have a chance to finish in the top half of the conference. They have some solid key guys and I think the coaching change will be good for them.

    • cush creekmont says:

I will take the BU money as well as the ISU and KU “dead money.”

Over-rated = Baylor, Okie lite, KU, ISU.

      Under-rated = WVU, KSU, TCU

About right = OU, texsa, TT.

texsa, WVU, KSU all have a better chance than BU.

    • Oscar says:

The odds are too high on Kansas.

  • Jason Vos says:

I’m sticking with my Jeff Mead pick

  • Jason Vos says:

I swear they better move StanvonTaylor to WR this year rather than having him waste away as a DB. The man had 1,100 receiving yards as a senior and was the #15 ranked WR according to 247

    • BoomerDave says:

I’m sure our coaches are aware of Stanvon”s High School stats, yet choose to keep him at DB. Trust me, he has been looked at at WR. Yet he remains at DB. Tells me all I need to know.

  • DCinAZ says:

Samia has a breakout year as does Alvarez.

  • Matt says:

Obo, Obo, Obo..I think he’s the talk of the defense after he dominates UH.

  • Mike Reed says:

I’m going with Lincoln Riley. He will really be able to show what he’s all about, where last year he had to keep it fairly simplified since it was a new system. He’s had a full year now to get his guys acclimated to his system and he is now able to add several new wrinkles/plays. With the talent he has to work with he will totally unleash an offensive beast this year. Lincoln Riley is my “Breakout Candidate” for 2016!! BOOMER!!

    • DCinAZ says:

Good call and I agree. I don’t believe we saw but maybe half of his offense last year. Looked really stripped down and simple.

Not to forget that he could only do so much with a young o-line that at times looked very shaky.

WOW, Is CBS Sports the new OU network? check it out. Here is one great link on Stoops….http://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/best-in-college-sports-how-hiring-bob-stoops-turned-around-oklahoma-athletics/

Ok, knowing I will be docked points if they do not perform I am going to go with the offense as a whole and the defense as a whole will both be “breakout”. I believe losing to Clemson is getting old to them and they will not stand for it any longer. As for special teams that is still up for debate, however I believe this too will change. FOOTBALL!!!!!

Ahmad Thomas is sending love to Mr. Bandy.

Thanks for sharing the tweet. I like they keep reminding our ’17 recruits they are next in line but it appears this tweet came from “soonersquad17” handle and not from Ahmad himself.

  • SamSooner says:

If I am the DL coach at OU, I would have two squads: 1a and 1b. I would make wholesale substitutions. Can you imagine the amount of pressure you can put on an offense if you are able to trot out a fresh DL. That would be like marching around the Walls of Jericho; eventually, the OL is going to crumble. That would be wickedly good.

    • Fear The Magic says:

I often wonder why more coaches don’t do exactly that Sam. Especially top 10 type teams that have quality Dline depth.

      • SamSooner says:

OU has the depth. The only thing that might prevent it is the HUNH offenses. But still, sub when you can. That would wear down an offense. We have so many quality DLs that it would be easy to do. Talk about blitzing when an OL is exhausted, late in the game. Wow!

    • CS says:

I have two words for you – “no huddle”

      • SamSooner says:

I know. That’s the only catch. But you’ll still have an opportunity to make substitutions. When you get the chance, send in a fresh unit.

Football thread– I know– but for anyone who does indeed follow baseball.. Former Owasso pitcher Dylan Bundy did well, 2.1 innings 7 k’s. 2 walks (one intentional) 2 hits. 0 runs.

  • John Garner says:

Admire you courage, Jordan, or foolishness to make such predictions so early. But like you said, it’s football, and it’s OU football at that, so I enjoyed reading them. I would add my pick for a breakout year as well: Jordan Evans. No special reason beyond the fact that I like his work ethic.

  • DCinAZ says:

I’m gonna go ahead and say DeDe Westbrook.

A guy who finished second in all major receiving categories? Lol. Way to go out on a limb! Lol

Love the video, love the song and I know in going to love Trajan. The kid wants and believes he is the honey badger! You know that gets expressed in his style of play and I for one, LOVED and still love watching he honey badger play in the pros. Kid will be a starter when his time comes, especially since we are in a pass happy league, there will be a spot on the field for that man.

      • SamSooner says:

I agree, Vegas. I will tweet him now and then, show him some OU love. This kid wants to mimic the honey badger. You’re right, he will be a star.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

The kids love the love! Lol. Believe, achieve and succeed. This kids does all 3.

  • Bob Edwards says:

I don’t know who will break out all I know is I want it to be a couple of OL. Good OL play and this offense should be stellar even if we only have a decent receiving corps. Good blocking and this stable of RB’s will move the chains. Then give Baker some time and he will find a receiver.

  • soonermusic says:

this time of year it’s hard not to get on board with just about everyone on the team. It’s also difficult to know where to draw the line between those expected to have a “breakout” year and those less so. After all that ramble, I think Anderson will establish himself as more than just a third back for mop up duty, Westbrook and the transfer, Geneo?, should be huge, and I’m on board with PJ, as well as Obo. Did I leave anyone out? Trevor Knight maybe …:-)

  • Nate Broadus says:

My pick is Dakota Austin. He was only played in spurts last year, but when he played he showed a mountain of potential. I wouldn’t be shocked if he comes in and turns into an all-conference level player.

Some comments on OUr commits at the opening.
A lot of other commits seem to be standing out as well most notably Alabamas QB Tua Tagovaiola. Theyre raving about him.

    GPowers

Been watching Tua Tagovaiola, Chris Robison, Jack Sears and Tommy DeVito. Was very impressed with Tua’s quick release and strong arm.

Chris Robison also has a very strong arm and his feet are quick and active.

    GPowers

Jalen Reagor and Tyrell Shavers have both looked strong in drills. Reagor especially has looked crisp. Solid routs and great hands.

    BrandonHuffman

Oklahoma commit Chris Robison has been one of the steadiest and most consistent QBs all morning. Strong arm, smooth release.

    Greg Biggins

Chris Robison has a real athletic body, a lot of quick twitch to him and a very live arm.

  • Ura Hogg says:

On burning the redshirts of some of these guys for just minimal starts, I think it’s for several reasons. First, because most talented freshmen want badly to see the field right away and getting them out there may minimize the risk of transfers. It also helps in recruiting as numerous examples can be pointed to of true freshmen getting playing time. And of course it gives coaches a chance to see what they have with these kids, maybe one will really shine and contribute, which they can’t do while redshirting.
