Bob Stoops Pre-Spring Presser

While practices don’t actually start until Saturday, the official kicking off of spring football is Bob Stoops’ annual meeting with the media prior to the start of actual practices. Stoops is expected to address the media around noon on Thursday and just like during the season, we’ll be here to update you in the comments as things happen live.

UPDATE: Cliffs to follow….
* Samaje Perine, Alex Dalton, Jordan Evans & Stanvon Taylor all expected to be limited or miss spring practices because of injury.
* LB & RB will be a little limited because of depth/injuries.
* Stoops says the only position change he can think of is Orso to OT.
* Rodney Anderson has been limited somewhat just as a precaution, but otherwise looks “back to normal.”
* Stoops confirms the Spurrier Jr. hire and that he’ll take over Dir. of HS recruiting/offensive QC. Bobby Jack Wright retiring (again).
* Stoops: Mark Andrews will have a bigger role (at WR). We were trying to give him a bigger role a year ago.
* PJ Mbanasor, Will Johnson and Dakota Austin all have a chance to take Zack Sanchez’s spot at CB.
* Stoops says they are looking at Curtis Bolton primarily as an ILB
* On Dalton Wood: Injured his back recently but “He’s been awesome. Done a great job in the weight room… looks good physically.”
* Stoops: “Guess there’s always a chance” Cody Thomas comes back and would be welcomed but not being discussed
* Redshirts from last year Stoops is excited about: Bobby Evans, Cody Ford, Ricky DeBerry, Du’Vonta Lampkin, Neville Gallimore, also mentioned Marquise Overton even though he didn’t redshirt.

I’ve heard this before. But I’ve yet to see it.
According to the Stoops to English Phrasebook:
“Mark Andrews will have a bigger role.” — Mark’s career is over, he may get in some during garbage time but don’t expect any major production out of him.
while I appreciate the snark, I think it’s misplaced here. I think they were genuinely frustrated at having Andrews at the same position as Shep. If it had been as simple as moving him to a different position, I think they would have done so in a heartbeat. This year, with no Shep in front of him, I bet you’ll see a ton of Andrews, and it wouldn’t surprise me, even though it’s not an offense that targets one guy, to see him be the leading receiver.

What can they do? They have only recruited natural outside LBs (even Dom Alexander weighed 220. Someone has to play inside. They decided to combat the air-attack offenses in the conference with smaller and quicker players.
He looks to have good balance, and he takes on large blockers well. He looks like he has put on some weight too. What don’t you like about him playing on the inside? Just curious.

I don’t know what you were expecting, but I liked what I heard. I especially liked what Bob said about improvement pretty much across the board, especially the receiver corps.
I mean I liked what I heard and in all honesty I don’t have a reason to be disappointed, Bob never really tells us anything during these things. But there is always a part of me that holds out hope that one day we will have journalists asking questions deeper than puddles and bob shedding more light on the situation than a film development room. Alas, poor yorik.
I understand. I think a lot of the obvious questions come as a result of making an effort to prolong the conference and giving everyone more time to come up with additional questions. That may account for many of the more inane questions.

Why? We went after a couple of experienced coaches that Stoops thought would fit, they likely turned us down, so we went with a young up-and-comer.

OU needs to have lines (O and D) like they do in the $ec!! On both sides of the ball OU gets pushed around too much from good teams, plus I am very worried Mayfield could get hurt (again) if the O line doesn’t get any better. The best way to beat the spread is have your front 4 get alot of pressure on the QB (see Denver) and not sure Thibs can bring in the talent to do this. Stoops personally needs to recruit or OU has no chance in getting him ( probably still won’t but need to give it your best shot)
Next year’s O line will be bigger, and has he potential to be better. Would like to see Flowers continue to develop as a blocker to help protect BM in the pocket.

JE – Stoops made comments about Obo and Austin Roberts. Each needed to be more dependable. Insight? Is this work ethic, classroom or in general.
re: Roberts – believe it’s just being more disciplined, not getting himself out of position trying to make a play.
re: Obo – think it’s actually quite similar. he must be doing something they don’t like, b/c when he screws up he never sees the field again. meanwhile others are allowed similar mistakes but don’t get benched.

I’m frankly not sure what people expect. It’s not very helpful to air any problems you are having with particular players in the media. That’s best done in private unless the guy is making some sort of public spectacle. Same with his assistants. So the only thing left to say is things that are happy, happy, happy.

Steve Spurrier Jr’s position at OU will be a big name for these high school coaches to speak with and a nice experienced offensive coach for the staff to work with. If Lincoln Riley moves on to be a HC elsewhere, Spurrier Jr will step in a position staff opening seamlessly.

I wonder if this could be the start of something new with Spurrier Jr being an offensive QC/analyst. I couldn’t find any other people listed in that type of position (Analyst not QC). Bama for example has 8 people that fall under the moniker “Football Analyst.” I’m not saying that OU needs to mirror everything the Tide does, but it couldn’t hurt having one or two sets of eyes other than coaches looking at Off, Def, ST, etc. Thoughts?

To my knowledge we do currently have an Off QC, Def QC, and ST QC along with 2 GA’s on each side of the ball.

I’m excited about the prospects of our pass rushing LBs in a 34 but our defensive line deserves a chance to show out. Unless they are all wood nickels we seem to have some talent and without a true 4 front we may be selling ourselves short.
How important/impactful is the Director of High School recruiting on the football program? What are Spurrier’s duties with this position?
I can’t tell you exactly what the specific duties of the job might be but I can say that High School recruiting is very important to the football program so directing that would be important. Hopefully there is a new wrinkle they are trying based on what they have seen other successful programs doing.

As Bob just said, BJW is leaving soon so we are just replacing a guy with a known guy. Based on the production he had here the first time around, I think it will prove to be a good move.

predictably bland, yet optimistic spring presser. Probably wouldn’t want it to be different. Don’t need drama at this time of the year.
My main take away is that there are a few guys that Bob is “expecting” to step up, meaning, if they want to see the field, they had better have already put in the work, and had better demonstrate a better understanding of what they need to do than they did last year.
Secondly, I liked his positive review of the receiver corps. He continues to sound like he’s pleased with the improvements in that dept. over a couple of seasons ago.
Also noticed his not so subtle remarks about how those outside the program don’t seem to understand that recruiting is a team effort.
