Fall camp officially kicks off tomorrow afternoon with team officially reporting and then the first day of practice set for Thursday. Last week I previewed the cornerback position, and now we’ll continue this preview series with the back half of the OU secondary.
For the Sooners to be successful this year, they have to get better production out of the safety position. Among other things, the big plays due to miscommunication and assignment errors have to end. Additionally, they have to get more range out of the deep safety spot.
Antoine Stephens – I’m going to begin with freshman DB Antoine Stephens, because I inadvertently left him off my cornerback list. Stephens is currently being started out at corner, though with his size don’t be surprised if he eventually transitions to a nickel or safety position. Stephens only started playing CB his senior year, so he is a little behind in terms of development. But he is a big athlete who demonstrated a lot of physicality in high school. Stephens will need some time so I expect him to redshirt, giving him that time to get stronger and continue developing his technique.
Steven Parker – I would wager that if you could ask Kerry Cooks what player at the safety position he is most excited about, he’d answer, without hesitation, Steven Parker. As a true freshman last year Parker certainly wasn’t perfect, but you could clearly see that high ceiling so many projected for him coming out of Jenks.
With that 2014 season under his belt and full offseason in the film room, I’m fully expecting a majority of those freshman mental errors to be cleaned up this coming season. Parker is a fantastic cover safety, who is also a quick trigger that can make plays in the run game. And he’s also shown an ability to blitz off the edge.
In OU’s base defense Paker should be all but a lock to be the starting strong safety. And as Stoops has mentioned several times in recent weeks, when OU shifts to a more DB heavy look, Parker will move over to the nickel back spot.
Ahmad Thomas – Last year Thomas played primarily at the free safety position with somewhat mixed results. In a Cover-3/Man-1 base scheme, which I expect OU to continue to play, you need a lot of range. You need a long, rangy deep safety who can read the play quickly and can get over the top in a hurry to help wherever he is needed. I’m reasonably confident Thomas knows what he’s supposed to do, but I just don’t see the free safety spot as a natural fit for him.
As of now it’s my understanding that in OU’s nickel package, Thomas is playing strong safety. However in their base defense, he is still playing in that free safety position. At the SS spot you can limit how much he’s put into man situations with inside WRs against 10-personnel by playing more Cover-3. But if he is going to play free safety…hopefully he’s made a big jump in terms of his ability to react quickly in order to provide the help needed.
Hatari Byrd – Byrd played some free safety last year and flashed at times, but also showed up too early at times as well. I’ve always got the impression from folks behind the scenes that Byrd has some good physical tools, but it’s his consistency within the scheme and ability to understand both safety assignments that have seemingly held him back to this point.
I’ve been told by sources that, as it stands right now, Byrd would move in to play free safety in the nickel package. However, in the base package I expect he will continue to battle with Thomas for that starting free safety spot well into fall camp.
Prentice McKinney – McKinney’s name has been mentioned by coaches a few times throughout the summer. When I’ve asked around about him, I’ve been told that he is an exceptional worker. He’s a player who, at a young age, is staying after practice/workouts and putting in extra work with the support staff.
As a player, I’m told he knows his assignments in 7-on-7 and rarely gets beat. I don’t get the sense he’s making a ton of plays necessarily, but I do get the sense he’s demonstrating consistency to his teammates and the coaches. I’m told McKinney rotates in at both safety spots in 7-on-7, so at this point I couldn’t really say which specific safety position he projects at.
But I will say this. Based on past history, players that can learn the defense usually have a good chance to see the field.
Will Sunderland – I have been told this summer that Sunderland has been rotating in primarily at the free safety position, but other than that I haven’t heard a great deal about him thus far. The two things that concerned me most about Sunderland coming out of high school, however, were (1) his ability to get in-and-out of his breaks and (2) his ability to understand the defense/diagnose the opposing offense.
That said, I get the sense from talking with folks that Sunderland is making strides in both respects. But may still need some time to really get comfortable understanding his assignment within the defense as opposed to just acting on instinct.
Kahlil Haughton – I’m saving the best for last. I know the talk we’ve heard (what little of it we’re allowed) from OU coaches thus far mostly been about McKinney — and I was a fan of his in high school and certainly also like what I’m hearing behind the scenes — but I stand by my prediction from last year regarding Haughton being the best safety prospect in this 2015 class.
And while I’ve yet to really see/hear the coaches say it publicly, I’m told that behind the scenes they’ve been very impressed with Haughton thus far. Which makes sense considering he is everything you would want in a safety. He is sharp, violent, play-maker that has better speed than almost every other DB (including the cornerbacks).
Haughton has been rotating in at both nickel and strong safety during summer workouts. My guess is the coaches will actually have him play both FS and SS in fall camp to see how he adapts to each. If I were Thomas and/or Byrd, this is the guy I’d be looking at over my shoulder.

In the event you are unable to perform your duties as outlined in the pageant bylaws…
Lol your in
!st runner-up!!
Bring on the violence!
^^^^^^^Yeah, What he said^^^^^^
I think as a whole, this is the defenses best group. I hear they all work hard and have their heads on straight.
A needed infusion of talent. Like what you said about McKinney and it holds true for all these guys. Don’t ‘need’ spectacular play/plays, just consistency in the back end. Once they get comfortable, the big plays are going to occur.
Thomas and Byrd.. Jury still out on Parker. This is why I am ok with playing 4 LBs most of the time.. Even vs Baylor some they are so physical up front if our CBs get beat it is usually a big play anyway.. Take away the run totally and get to the QB with the best group you have which are the LBs.. I do like and have Haughton you could see his range and ability to diagnose a play quickly (like Jefferson and Pool recently) but he is still a True Freshman.
I think you have that backwards, Parker has shown me more in one year than both of the other two have done in two…no disrespect to either. Obligatory IMO as well
I agree. Thomas is sure tackler I guess but his coverage skill is different story. Hopefully a full year and a new coach can change that
Parker has a chance to show something this year but not counting it till we see it. I expected Thomas and Byrd to play good last year as true Sophmores (and Thomas was a early enrollee is FR year) and they didn’t so if Parker does that is great we need him too.
Fair enough
This is excellent again, Super K. Thanks.
I think your comment about “players that can learn the defense” is key. It seems to me that some guys are able to overcome some mental errors due to sheer speed or athleticism, others are able to play at a higher level than their pure athleticism might suggest due to mental sharpness and ability to understand, read, and anticipate. In both cases experience is a huge factor. I remain optimistic that it will make a big difference this season.
I don’t think most people realize how much difference having a quick mind plays into the concept of “football speed.” For instance, for a DB who is backpedaling and has to recognize a play in front of him, every tenth of a second in reaction time is worth about two yards on the field. That’s the difference between a 4.4 and a 4.6 in a 40 yard dash.
Great info appreciate all you all do on this site.
You think Sunderland redshirts and Mckinney gets blowout duty/special teams work? Huaghton, Byrd, Thomas, and Parker rotating the 2 safety spots?
Good stuff K. This is the kind of stuff that I would pay to read. The fact that you give it out for free is great.
Fourteenth
Is there any reason why a CB like Mbanasor cant play the NB spot, and leave Parker at safety the whole time
This is what I wondered all last year. Why not play a nickel corner instead of a nickel safety?
Exactly, why does it have to be a safety playing the NB spot. I would think if you need an extra DB on the field to cover the pass you would want to play a CB
I’m thinking in obvious passing situations they will. In the past they’ve used the safety-nickel or “Roybacker” as its been called on running downs against the heavy passing teams and then switched to a 3rd corner on obvious passing downs. In my understanding thats what K. Everett, J. Wilson and G. Lynn all were at different times in their career before Lynn moved to a true safety and Wilson to an outside corner spot.
Great question, Jason!
If we played a third corner as the .05, then a team could put that player in a run-pass conflict. The corner could handle the man coverage, for example, but would also need to help in the run game and be a good tackler. Perhaps Mbanasor could do that.
Do we have to play A Thomas?
Talent Talent and more Talent nice job K
Nice work (as usual) Super K. I do hope as the D-coaches search for the right safeties combo that there are enough reps for the eventual starters to be cohesive.
Perhaps having the entire secondary under the auspices of one coach, as it will be this year, will help eliminate the confusion and assignment busts.
Walter, one of these days you’re just going to have to face the fact…and another thing…maybe an appropo avatar.
“Without a hostage there is no ransom. Those are the rules.”
“It’s a league game, Smokey.”
This type of info is exactly why this is the best website on the internet!!!
Yep! And worth every penny! It would be better then the rest even if they did charge, of course!
sk……when do you think there will be an oline/dline report…….thxs
I wish Haughton enrolled early. I think back to the 08 Florida safeties and geez, they were fast and physical. This year the safeties will be better but there is a lot of improvement ahead of them. My hope is Parker will take on the leadership role and become that play maker we’ve missed for some time. The better they are, the better we will be.
You guys better pick up the pace, it’ll be October before you get through all the positions. In all seriousness this is a great feature, really look forward to these posts.
The solution to the secondary is not “one coach, one room.” They had that in the past and the secondary still wasn’t much better. The solution is that the coach has changed
completely and that the players will have more experience.
What’s the odds Dalton Woods shows up to camp ?
http://www.joiedevivre.net/joieweb/sell/classictoys/magic8ball250.gif
He’s not.
….
That ship has sailed. There has been virtually no communication between Dalton and the staff. Apparently Dalton has made it clear that his life is in McAlester.
I assume the rumor of him knocking up his GF are true?
Big mistake. I don’t know all the details such as family background and all that jazz, but he’d likely be a better dad in the long run finishing college. Not like OU/Norman is a long ways away from McAlester.
Rumors: Something like that, I dont think the OU staff knew all the details until he showed up. They tried to talk to him but his mind was made up.
Thanks BoomerDave, I have been out of the loop for awhile!
Good luck with that. I would imagine most people there are doing everything they can go to get out of McAlester.
He tweeted out last night that he would indeed be at camp!
On something other than Twitter? B/c I’m not seeing it.

thxs……..that wasn’t up earlier today……….now you’ve entered the preseason
Fall Camp = Time to put up or shut up. I hope you enjoyed your stars and ranking freshmen because that all goes away starting now!
*just a little pumped that camp is finally here and we can stop talking hypothetically
KJ1123, if you watch any sec football, they always mention the star rating. so and so was a 5 star. even when they are a senior in college.
Like, “Joe Mixon, the former 5* recruit out of California, scores his 3rd TD of the game as OU takes a 31-21 lead over Tennesee with 1:42 left to go” ????
I have a hunch OU is going to be up my more than 3 at that point.
Man I hope so Rainy. How ya been?
I’m thinking so, too. Sure hope we’re right!!
I’m happy with a 3-2 win
Three TDs sounds about right, to me.
Yessir, just like that!
I can totally see that….”We’re Bama, we have a buttload of 5 stars, we dominate recruiting….” blah blah….
Pssst…Oklahoma Drill!
/just sayin’
“The GREAT EQUALIZER!”
And WHO gets Optimus Perine one-on-one? If we have a LB that can come close to a draw – that will be SOME LB. May have to go to tackle to find someone to match him.
No one, he gets a blocker. I doubt Perine gets invited to this party, no need knocking our defenders out for the season that early.
Exactly, there is no need to take a chance hurting him or a defender when you already know exactly what you have in Perine.
Blue Shirt please.
K, can you help me out. My understanding from back in my day was that FS generally was you last defense for the DB’s This was a guy that had to be smart, read plays, and be able to cover a ton of field quickly when LBs, CB’s or other safeties got beat. Obviously in CFB they use everyone in very different ways in order to keep the offense guessing, but in general is this still what a FS does. IF so why are our huge what seem to be slower safties playing at FS rather than strong. Am I crazy to think that Parker should be playing at FS rather than SS? Do have poor understanding of the positions?
Daryl this was my understanding as well. The free safety is IMO supposed to be the guy who can cover the most field ie polamalu or Ed reed. A guy that just makes plays everywhere. Whereas the SS is a guy who just doesn’t bust in coverage and is good in run support.
I agree there’s probably more sophistication than I understand but that’s the way I’ve always pictured those positions.
By the way I would probably move Parker to SS and will Johnson to free
I would just play Haughton at FS and Parker at SS. Not sold on Thomas’s range. Byrd has the athletic ability but the light just hasn’t caught on. I like Johnson as the NB.
Not you don’t have poor understanding at all. Your FS is a base cover 1 defense is indeed a guy who is going to roam the backfield, read the play and hopefully have the range to assist wherever needed. But the SS in this day and time may be the most difficult position on the field. The SS against spread attacks is regularly forced to play man to man in a cover 1 base defense. He’s also a guy that makes calls. He’s also a guy that you may want to bring pressure with. You’re also going to at times rotate your coverage so he may be in a position in a cover 3 rotation to have to play deep middle as well. He also needs some in the box skills since he will play the down safety position. The SS has a lot of responsibilities. I think your FS needs to be smart, rangy and physical. Everyone remembers Major Wright helping deep in the OU Florida game and laying Manny out. Ahmad Thomas attempted to do the same thing last year in the Tech game. Unfortunately, he laid JT out instead. His range and reaction need to improve. I get the sense that Byrd has the range but again they aren’t playing cover 1 every down so he has to understand his various assignments.
How would you feel about Byrd, Haughton, and Parker Starting at both safeties and the nickel? Would this potentially be our best lineup or does Haughton have to much to learn to play right away?
This very helpful. Makes sense about the spread and what that does to the SS position. I didn’t realize that the SS makes the calls for the secondary.
It is crazy how the basics of the game will forever be the same, but at the same time there have been some real seismic shifts in the way it is played out.
Thanks for the reply K.
Great stuff, SK. Did you ever get a tutorial piece put together for all of these defenses: cover 1, cover 2, cover 3 and respective responsibilities? Been a long time and the nomenclature has changed along with responsibilities. Tnx!
This would be really helpful!
K you think we will be similar to this…http://www.fieldgulls.com/football-breakdowns/2013/12/6/5176254/seahawks-earl-thomas-pete-carroll-nfl-saints
This is what frustrates me about moving Wilson to CB and Hayes being moved some to NB we had the guys last year and instead made 3 problems instead of working a young CB (we know JT now) in..
I always thought Julian was a safety. He had immense straight-line speed. Maybe, just maybe, he was a bit less than optimal on the stop-change of direction-run, and he played a bit high. Typically, he would raise up too early just before the receiver would make their final breaks.
What @SuperKBrainiac:disqus said.

Funny…I was thinking of Earl and the seattle defense then I see your post
Re: Haughton- My second fav DB after PJ from last year, I was stoked when we got him from Baylor’s backyard but this is really lofty praise * best safety prospect in this 2015 class.*
I agree. I liked Marvell tell a lot as the best safety from last year but as far as when they found haughton he was severely underrated. The potential is there I just don’t know if I see future 1st round pick potential just yet.
I was curious if K mean best in the overall class, or best in OU’s class.
Absolutely. No way the rankings did him any kind of justice. Alot like Samaje, no flash but you know the kid will bring home the bacon in bucketfuls
I can’t wait to see if these guys improve.
you and every sooner fan
Not every OU fan, some are hoping for dark skies and hot seats for coaches
I see them starting out strong then just getting better and better. That’s my hope anyway.
Thanks for the progress notes. I’m like you: most excited about Haughton and Parker.
My question: have you heard of what specific scheme changes Cooks will be implementing? Last years confusion cost us games and was very frustrating
Always appreciate the insights on the Sooners.
As for Haughton, I would recognize that bright face and huge smile anytime.
A guy that happy comes from a good family with a lot faith in Jesus
Is it a digital kind of thing? Or analog? I mean, if his faith is pretty solid, but he has, from time to time, doubts; does he have kind of a smirk? And no faith at all would result in a frown? How about a guy with solid faith in the Buddha? Smiling but in an alien way? And what of a Jew or Muslim? Same Abrahamic God, but not so down with Jesus. What facial expression would that produce? Inquiring minds and all that….
And before you get ticked, this was offered in a loving and friendly way.
Think what you want, it changes my mind none
It wasn’t intended to. What you’ve got seems to be working for you. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
The whole ‘facial expression as faith meter thing’ just struck me as funny.
And I’m going with analog….it makes for a richer, more rounded experience.
no worries, I am what I am and that part of my life is immensely important to my happiness 🙂
Same here.
Smiles back at you.
I YAM WHAT I YAM AND THAT’S ALL THAT I YAM- POPEYE. I have the wrong avatar, LOL!
“Popeye – 1933” One of my favorite quotes.
One of the least volatile conversations on religion that has ever taken place. You have a gift…
Those never accomplish much. Dave84 seems like a good dude. He can do his thing, I’ll do mine. Hope both of us ‘walk in beauty’ as the Navajo say.
http://www.bbncommunity.com/happiest-man-on-earth-is-a-buddhist-monk/
Actually, the man considered the ‘happiest’ in the world by scientific measurement of brainwaves is a Buddhist monk, Matthieu Ricard, a former molecular geneticist. Just sayin’…
#nerdalert
Lol. Hardly. Just ‘well read’ and always open to learning.
Come on. That’s pseudoscience at best. Unless and until he establishes a baseline using OU fans after a Red River shoot out win he doesn’t know happy from Om!
Yes! True happiness, that right there. Will be close to Nirvana with NC #8!
I remember the photo of him with his Mom when he committed. You could see the beaming face and broad smile was a family trait.
Happy parents generally have happy kids
Yessir.
Seems as though there was some reference to Haughton as the ‘smiling assassin’ due to the violence of some of his hits as counterpoint to his beguiling smile. Hope to see that smile a lot following some big hits and INTs.
His smile is so brilliant, it will shine through the face mask after he knocks the stuffing out of a WR.
Good stuff, Super K. Thanks for these position breakdowns. Getting me pumped because I believe we’ll be improved significantly in this area this year and in the future.
When the 1st game starts I will immediately judge where we are as a defense if a certain player is the free safety.
Glad your so quick to give up on kids. Many can improve with proper coaching. Case in point—Trevonne Boykin.
He meant if he sees me out there, and if he does OU has no shot.
Lol.
LoL Goes for a lot of us old has beens/never was.
You would have a great point if it was a quick point. I’ve scoured my DVR for one positive play from this guy. Much time wanting to find something. Most every time he was involved in the picture it was walking up after, after the play was over. To your point I’m not giving up or giving in as I am very aware my opinion hasn’t a chance in the universe of changing anything about how the defense does.
Excellent. Your point is meaningless because it’s independent of the defense. Glad we got that clarified.
You’ve said a lot of nothing. Next time, keep that thought to yourself, keep it quiet: it would have spared you some ridicule. We just met, but I’ve given up on you.
It’s great when some believe a player can’t get better. You can’t tell me Michigan fans are saying wtf about Brady having 4 Super Bowls. He wasn’t that good in college to my knowledge. And I’m sure there’s 1000 other guys that had horrible years early in college and turned out to be good players by the time they made it to the NFL
you’re*
There he is.
Someone used “irregardless” the other day. I was cringing too badly to say anything and was hoping you would make an appearance.
Cringes at his desk….
Made my head hurt then and now typing the nonexistent word.
I used to have to listen to a regional manager who used that word constantly in conference calls. She might have just as well scraped her nails on a chalkboard.

I see you’ve reported for fall camp….appears you didn’t lose anything over the summer. 🙂
I’ve only gotten better.

Why does Nila already look mad? He must be hungry, no lunch.
Hungry for a title.
He’s a vet, just getting his mind right for the grind.
Somebody said “saxet.”
……?…….did this ‘ou dna’ thing replace the ‘bring the wood’
I think so, they started using it around signing day this year.
so, they’ll get rid of the wood stains in the uni and replace with double helix?
Yes, and it’s working well. A ton of recruits have mentioned it, but I bet very few would say “bring the wood” when referencing OU, so there’s much better branding there.
An excellent brand, IMHO. It asks or says the recruit has “it” in them.
I used to say “bring the wood”. Totally different context, however.
http://www.pleated-jeans.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/when-rappers-brag-about-being-rich-and-breaking-the-law-but-then-whine-when-you-illegally-dl-their-music.gif
She needs to spank me.
I always prefer “giving” in that respect. 🙂
here, here!
I used to just bring the wood wherever I went… you win some, you lose some.
I don’t know that is replaced. Bring the wood was the # because the alternate uniforms had that wood grain pattern in them. It was not a recruiting or motto. They actually started the OUDNA thing on signing day but have continued it on. My guess is it was a signing day idea that people loved and they kept it going. Either way I love it.
I hope so. The ‘wood’ was ok, but really like the marketing of the DNA.

Kind of you to say, but I discovered I am a lowly slacker.

wow, did not realize my AR was not only good for hunting breakfast, but cooking it up too. 🙂
Thinking of all the bacon that has gone uncooked from the 100’s of thousands of those rounds I have fired makes me sad.
But that ain’t a machine gun.
I know, you know and he knows. It was a completely tongue and cheek video designed to tweak the delicate sensibilities of Hoplophobes.
Not sure he does know. Boomer!
Yeah, he do.
He did it to tweak the weenies and you should have seen how Chris “Tingle-Leg” Matthews reacted, it was worth it just for that.
S00NER!
EasTex, my man, I took your advice and stopped at the Omelettry this morning for breakfast. I had the ginger pancakes with eggs and sausage.
Great recommendation.
Thanks!
You are welcome and I am jealous. 🙂
Glad you are back with your young family.
Thank you. I’m not home yet. I’m in the Charlotte airport. Departure is 7:44 EST.
Yikes!
Well, even if you have to wake them up for a hug and a kiss they will want you to.
Will do.
I’m just back from Charlotte as well. I drove, however.
beautiful countryside. Long drive?
Just watched the OU Caravan feature on SoonersportsTV. Looked like a good event and lots of fun, the coaches were excellent.
At the end of the event when all the coaches stood from their chairs I watched to see how Coach Stoops would do after the hip replacement. I was pleased to see he stood without any difficulty and turned and walked as though he never had a problem. I am glad to see that and the fact that he no longer has the pain he has been living with for years. His activity and energy levels should be much higher.
EasTex I had my hip done at Baylor Uptown last year and was back driving in 23 days. Dr J. Mac Lancaster, former Tulsa Hurricane defensive end and academic all-american, did mine. He did the frontal {anterior} method, left a 4″ scar and I was up and walking the same day. I would guess Bob probably had the same procedure.
Glad that went well for you, they run a great facility at Baylor.
I have no way of knowing what exactly he had done, he was hobbling with a cane for a while and recently reported that all the tightness from the rehab had dissipated.
You would know better than me how much better he must feel having had that procedure done.
DE Austin Roberts is not reporting because of a transcript issue at Adams State, where he took the 2 online classes. Apparently they have not sent his grades (2 B’s) to NEO or OU thus he cannot report. He will stay in Georgia until transcripts are sent, per Eric Bailey
It’s always something this time of year…always.
What is Adams State?
An online university I’m guessing.
****facepalm****
Probably not the best administrative staff out there.
Your reading comprehension seems to be slipping, are you ok? On the bright side, this appears to be just a paper work thing that may be cleared up as early as tomorrow. On on other note, it’s damn hot in this tent….could you spare a bucket of ice? ?
Adams Atoms.
I’m willing to bet that, even though camp is only a few hours old, there have already been some shake ups in the roster. It’ll be an interesting camp.
Wow! Super K, never cease to amaze with the great information. I’m getting the feeling that everyone involved with the football program is really motivated and stepping up their game to another level. Expecting big things this year…….”no pressure Coach Stoops”. Damn it’s hot out. Come on fall and Sooner football! OU☝
According to NewsOK or the Oklahoman today, the Sooners will be using temporary facilities this season? Has anyone else heard about this? Are they doing something to the stadium?
I think they are repainting the grass Crimson with Cream strips!
I really hope this is sarcasm and you just forgot to use the proper font.
Pure sarcasm, probably should have used the font but oh well. (-:
Does anyone have any kind of idea or theory why Dalton Wood is absent and not communicating with anyone?
cliff notes?…..gf knocked up and he ain’t coming
It’s sad you would think that would motivate him to make sure he takes full advantage of a full education at a good school. But he is 18 and I’m not going to pretend I know what’s best for him.
Whatever his situation I hope it works out for him.
Most of us older guys know that what regrets we have are more for the things we should have done and not the things we have done.
yeah, if I remember correctly, he grew up bleeding crimson, got his dream offer, the family is excited…….then it heads south……..but, as a poster noted, if his heart wasn’t in it he might have quit down the road, so, a scholly was freed up to use now……….good luck to him
He left the team back in June. People wanted to speculate and what not that he was coming back and he didnt have to report till fall, but it was already final. He hasnt talked to any OU staff since. The reason? Its complicated.
Anyone heard anything about Dallis Todd? I’m sure you’ll let us know when the WR write up comes out. But I’m just curious. Haven’t heard his name all off season..
Is there still the possibility of the good news? Haven’t heard much since the tweet but with that being said I appreciate you guys this site is honestly the best!
I asked on Monday afternoon I think and Jordon said they still expected it this week at that point in time, but with recruiting things change quickly I guess. I’m hopeful until I hear otherwise!
That’s true recruiting can change so quick. Thanks for the answer and I’m hopeful too! Who or what do you think it’s about?
It has to be about somebody verbally committing based on the other texts that K has teased with, but go no idea who at this point. I figure if it was big enough to get K to tease it then it will probably be really good!
It’s good to see these 2 hanging out. In a year or two we will need them to be leaders
Great pic.
Deberry has got the down with Texsa thing working and Hulk is sporting a Super Flex helmet, which he will need when he is blasting people.
I’ve noticed a lot of guys going back the orginal style Schutt helmets
The SF helmet is much better for preventing head injuries.
you think they play this year or rs?
Just guessing I think they play some. Three LBs are Seniors this year.
I just know they have some injury concerns. I bet they play too but not a whole lot of meaningful snaps early. Maybe some late when depth may become an issue. Plus like you said they’re graduating several seniors so these 2 need the experience.
I know some speculated that they might drop to DE but I don’t see that in a traditional 4 man front since both are 6’2. I see them more like striker if they have a similar first step
Yeah next year Obo will be the only depth at the position they are expected to play…I fully expect them to get some reps…them some big mofos
I don’t see them at DE, either ILB or OLB. Coming behind Striker and Bond would be my idea.
I’d expect them both to splay on ST, then spot duty at LBer.

That scared the crap out of me.
LOL!
I stand corrected, I’m sure Hulk plays this year.
I woulda lost it had he busted the towel dispenser!! That would be pumped for check in day
Big dudes…prob end up DEs if they keep growing
Watching the 2002 Sooner vs Mizzery game on Fox Sports Central.
It’s like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

I wonder if they will find a power conference in 10 years. They’re good at basketball but they are embarrassingly bad as a football program. They run off the best coach they ever had because he’s a hard ass and I heard a lot of it had to do with his image. Just dumb.
Yeah Mangio was the best they’ve had…what did he go 10-2 with a orange bowl win…granted that still isn’t OU good (two losses here will get you on the hot seat lol)…but it doesn’t get any better than that for KU
geez, are they going to have a 2 deep?………..get your season tickets while you can
They will probably start giving them away just to get people to come. Though, if they are like most universities these days, they will come up with some scheme to force the students to buy them.
it’s sad, b/c at times over the yrs, ku was pretty salty at fb but they couldn’t maintain it………..ksu was similar but they got snyder and a big benefactor and it turned around
By the last count they had 61 scholarship players, now 59?
Oh my!
They’re not in Kansas anymore. Ha! I kills me.
Uh…actually they are, funny man.
They’re almost the Fighting Armadillos. Not much longer until they’re forced to play iron man football. Does Andre Krimm have any eligibility left?
There is more players on the basketball team than the football.

Peel ‘n eat. Too much work for me.
Gotta love the Tennessee fan on Twitter talking smack about their D-line.
Watch out for Cody Thomas, hearing some good things. Arm Strength playing a role
I would be ok with this. He just has to make the biggest improvement of all 3 but he definitely has the tools.
Fine by me and wouldn’t surprise me, either.
whatever you’re hearing isn’t making it to observers in the media……..quite often, he isn’t mentioned at all………since he skipped bb to work at qb, am hoping he can make some noise
He finished the summer 7s in the top 2
With no fatigue.
Ah, Stoops at Big 12 Media mentioned Knight and Mayfield with Cody right behind THEM. So…
you didn’t get it
I didn’t either til now………good one
Oh. Duh. Good one!
Can’t take you seriously after you liked your own comment.
I’ve been waiting on this one! Safety position is by far the one I am most concerned about heading into the season. Parker had his problems last year, but I think the experience and offseason should do him well. I see him being solid. But the other spot is where I am most worried. I became so fed up with Thomas last season. Felt like he was frequently out of position and when he was in position, he didn’t make the play. Byrd showed me a few encouraging signs but also seemed to not make the play even when he was in position (is it just me or does he have really bad hands?). I like that we seemed to recruit well at the position this offseason and I really hope one of the new guys bursts onto the scene and has a Tony Jefferson like freshman season. Tony was special tho, so I don’t expect that lol. I guess the best thing i can hope for is massive improvement from Thomas because I feel like he will probably start week 1. I think Sanchez called him the best safety in the country on twitter the other day so hey, maybe I’ll eat some crow :)…. good job on the breakdown Super K! Boomer Sooner to you all!
I like Thomas but best safety in the country?……umm……no.

Just thought I’d add this link
Other than #1 they got it right.

47 Straight – usc did NOT do that. Of the top 5, I think Mich is still over-rated. Go back farther and Harvard makes the top. In the Modern Era, ND is better than Mich. OU, USC, Alabama, ND clearly the top.
Just looked at the top 5 only, I’d agree with that.
Are we going to get updates on the position battles from TFB?
