Bob Stoops, Mike Stoops & Lincoln Riley are expected to meet with the media around 2pm today to discuss the Sooners opening of fall camp and the upcoming 2015 season.
As we’ve done in the past here at TFB, I will be live commenting everything that is said below. Now as we’ve all become accustomed, I wouldn’t necessarily expect any big breaking news to come out of today. But nevertheless we’ll be here for you just in case.
So feel free to watch along live — which you can do here courtesy of Sooner Sports TV — or come back later in the day and use the comments as a bit of a recap.

First!
Do they have practice? I thought they were supposed to.
No practice today. It was Meet the Sooner Day this morning.
They practiced.
I stand corrected.
Perine hurt.
There was a practice held this morning before media/fan day
As Larry said below, they practiced this morning.
What channel is this going to be on?
If it’s on any actual cable channel at all, I’d suspect it would be on Fox Sports Oklahoma. But my assumption is streaming will be your best option.
Any chance they name the starting qb 😉
BREAKING: Bob Stoops is pleased w/ how things have gone thru the first three practices.
Lol….I see what you did there.
Happy in that they’ve retained a lot from the spring.
Bob rattling off basically every WRs name as guys who have performed well
Bob compliments St. John & Farniok at OT
Love this both 5th year seniors we don’t rebuild we reload!
Says the expectation is the secondary should be much better this year.
But, but, but…didn’t Mike say they were young?
Young, yes. Not talented, no. 🙂
Bob singles out Devante Bond as a guy that is going to play a big role this year
My tweet in October: wasn’t Bond supposed to be playing more?
Bob is essentially running thru the entire roster talking about guys, pretty general statements re: improvement and what not.
Bob has now moved on to special teams. Nothing really earth-shattering though.
In general, Bob is pleased w/ things.
Bob said there was an injury scare w/ Perine in practice today, minor ligament strain. Shouldn’t require more than a couple days of rest.
Strain only. Thank the lord.
+1000
Bob says Steven Parker has been emulating the Roy-back position TRRW starred at
No surprise i see Brodney Pool 2.0
The media is REALLY latching on to Bob’s mentioning of Charles Walker
what did he say about walker?
Stoops said he doesn’t really care if they’re playing more than one QB so long as they’re moving the ball.
Don’t love the thought of this
Agree. No Spurrier type system please. Start one and if he is ineffective then give the shot to the backups. Or whoever plays better against Akron.
Me either but I think at the end of the day, this won’t be something we see.
Stoops says at this point they are not expecting Dalton Wood to show up
Stoops said the earlier is always the better when it comes to naming a QB1, but they aren’t going to rush things just to do so.
Bob says there won’t be nearly as much ‘check with me’ at the LOS in this new offense
THANK YOU FOOTBALL GOD
Yay for better offensive football!
Faster pace?
Yes
I liked this in 08 when it was new and its not bad when you see an obvious miss alinment or weekness in the d but it allows the defence to dictate what you do any given snap line up and play some football!
I liked that under Leach when Josh made his own audibles.
My understanding is it’s a lot of the same as Leach. Meaning, the QB gets the play but he (QB) can make that check which keeps the rhythm & flow of the uptempo. I’m excited about both Mayfield and TK. TK excels in the uptempo as I’ve watched all of his games last year. Whoever starts will do well.
Leach always said his playbook was under 10 pages, but they disguise the same play with a multitude of formations to keep defenses guessing. He said the offense was really simple as long as the QB will remember where his options will be on the field which will be mostly the same from play to play.
Simplicity is the hallmark of genius.
Couldn’t agree more and it was interesting listening to the OU QBs saying, Riley’s system is easy to pick up.
I know you are a BM fan but if you watch last years games, Trevor was very good when JH went uptempo. I have a son who is working with an x pro QB for the past two years. He says all the time, rhythm and flow are a QB’s best friend. This equals Simplicity.
I know this sounds a little crazy but when I think of a game where they kept is simple I think of the sugar bowl… they didn’t ask Tk9 to do anything he’s not capable his throws was quick and he seemed to find the open receiver on every play and used his legs to make some game changing plays. I believe keeping it simple is only asking your qb to do what he’s comfortable doing I know this is a obvious statement but it’s true and I love Heuple to death as a player but he so inconsistent as a play caller and never got his qbs comfortable in the system he wanted to run
Sometimes seemed like he was pulling plays out of a hat.
I think more than anything we saw a Tk9 that was put in a situation where he was comfortable alll he had to was make the right read based on coverages and get the ball out fast he looked very comfortable and composed exactly how a qb should play when only ask to do the things that your capable of doing and the game slowed down so much for him it was knight and day difference.
Watched an old interview with Bob stoops and Bob Barry sr. Yesterday that took place after the Texas A&M game in 2000 omost forgot how much he would jump as he was releasing the ball lol. He was an absolute field Marshall made all the throws knew when to run to get some extra yards just aways came up with big plays when it mattered most. Just got to put your qb in situations to succeed and not ask more out of them than there capible of doing.
I’ve read all of your posts and have totally enjoyed them. Thanks for putting your spin on it as I see it the same way.
Thanks for the kind words I don’t comment as much as would like but like my grandpa always said “it’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt” lol
Good, I despise the Meerkat. Love the animal though.
So I’m a liiiitle bit confused on our defensive look when Parker is playing the NB (which we keep hearing). Does that mean Thomas and Byrd are both on the field playing deep safeties? Not trying to be pessimistic but that scares me a little lol
Me too, but hopefully Cooks has straightened out some of the issues they were having last year and that they both are forced to step up, or lose their spots to some of those talented freshmen for the 2015 class.
Jordan doing a heck of a good job today.
Bob says they will limit media opportunities for Perine, similar to what they did w/ Bradford. “They can only do so much. You never want it (media stuff) to be a burden.”
fwiw, the question was asked w/ respect to when the media will be allowed to talk to Mixon. Bob was masterful in shifting the focus, never mentioned Mixon.
Bob says “we’ll see” w/ regards to getting Mixon in front of the media w/ a press conference or something similar.
Bob says Michiah Quick dealt w/ some nagging stress fractures that limited him some in the winter/spring.
Quick is dangerous. We have some depth. I think he could be a good punt returner as well.
His high school highlights were phenomenal. I could see him thriving in this offense. Maybe not this year, but before he is done at OU he will be a big contributor
Bob says there is definitely a place in this offense for both Perine & Mixon to be on the field at the same time. #giggity
I can not wait for that to happen!
I assumed Riley has already worked Mixon and Perine in certain packages.
I wish it was the standard formation
Yeah. I am thinking that we will see Perine with Mixon in the slot and able to run the ball on end arounds from the slot, along with Shepard, Westbrook and Andrews/Mead. So many weapons…
Just think….Mixon in the slot and comes around on Jet Sweeps. Or fake the jet sweep and hand it off to Perine. Wow. And no more 8 in the box with the added threats (Westbrook, Andrews, Mixon) added to Shep in the passing game. Can’t really key on anyone.
This.
Josh had lots of weapons and couldn’t figure out how to use them. We never lacked offensive talent, just handicapped them with a stupid system that ultimately cost Josh his job.
Exactly! And welcome back!
I don’t see how you could keep potential big time threats off the field, a good coach would have as many play makers on the field as possible. Seems Coach R agrees. Boomer!
Even to serve only as a decoy… brilliant. Would hate to be the opposing D this year.
Bob says all the QBs are a lot more comfortable in their reads, you can tell they put in a lot of good work this summer.
https://twitter.com/BradyVardeman/status/630095980709347328
The Justice Hansen transfer seems even stranger given how open the position is.
A close fourth is still 4th.
I hope after his time at Butler CC we’ll go after him again. 99% unlikely that would happen, but I can always dream.
https://twitter.com/OU_Football/status/630096691669020672
When do the players start wearing pads ?
They were in shells today
Thanks
Oh by the way I’m new to this site. BOOMER !
Welcome. SOONER!
Welcome. TFB are here everyday.
SOONER
Welcome. Great to have you. This is the go to site for anything/everything OU related.
Just a lot of rambling now about Mayfield. Nothing really of note.
Rest Perine for the remaining time for fall camp.
Importance of quality depth at RB 🙂
That’s right. Perine, Mixon, Ross, Anderson, Brooks…
Its a really good problem to have.
I would not be surprised to see 2 rb on the field at the same time I see a lot of motion in this offense to try to get our best athletes in space
Not really possible. Too much to learn on the new offense then timing with the QB1
I would agree with that if they weren’t installing an entirely new offense.
Bob says he would prefer to play on that final weekend of the season, even though it costs them some time in recruiting
The last weekend is important now that championship contenders are being picked by human beings.
Yeah with the committee being human now…there is the chance of OU being “Out of sight, out of mind…”
Bob says the stadium construction will only be a challenge if you allow it to be.
That’s a wrap w/ Bob
Jordan, great job Sir.
I’m starting to feel more comfortable about the QB situation. I hope Baker starts because i think he is best for this offense. However, if he sucks or gets injured, I feel like we will see the best TK9 ever. I feel like he would be motivated to never lose that spot again. If TK9 is named the starter, I feel like the new offense could bring out a much better version of him than what we saw last year. And with a more reliable back up (Baker), maybe Riley will let Knight use his legs a little more. I definitely feel like not letting Knight run is an injustice to his best talents. But either way I am starting to feel good about the QB situation! I’m hoping for a good season this year, but my expectations are more 10-3ish. Maybe 11-2. 2016 might be that magic number 8 tho 🙂 Boomer Sooner
We often do our best when less is expected from us! Boomer
Very true! I miss the 08 season tho… where us fans came into the season knowing that the team was damn good and championship caliber. Still feel like that’s the title that got away from us 🙁
Murray returning kickoffs cost us the title IMHO.
I still have nightmares about this he was the best back in the league last year. Everytime I think about this game I pitcure chis brown getting tackled For a loss on 4 and goal at the
one, with Tebow struggling in the first half we should of been up by 2 or more touchdowns, should of just returned punts If anythnng
I think he was covering a kickoff. Should not have been on the field.
In 07 he dislocated kneecap on onside kick attempt at tech. 08 injured hamstring returning opening kickoff v mizzou. Yes! We would’ve beaten Florida with a healthy Murray. Nobody will ever convince me otherwise.
I also think Baker will be best. But if Knight beats him out, it’ll be a good thing. Knight would have won the job over two other contenders. Competition is a good thing.
Agree iron sharpens iron, knight played his best in the long forgotten sugar bowl and we came out in a offense similar to what we will be running this year. The big question I have is how much injustice trying to run the zone read “hAlf assed” did to his development as a overall qb in this offense quick read and predetermined throws should suit him best.
I think there is a happy medium. TK9 should not be a zone read QB, nor should he be a pocket Passer. If it was maybe like 5 runs a game, and a few more roll-out vs just pocket throws, I think we’d be on to something.
It seems Lincoln Riley runs a qb friendly offense I don’t see him trying to push a square peg through a round hole unlike Heuple. Tk9 showed he has the ability to make all the throws u think the X factor will be his legs in all the years we ran the spread I don’t think we ever qb with his eluselusive.
Go watch the games from the 2000 team. Heupel made some great plays with his legs 1st then finished with his arm. As a championship QB he was awesome. TK9 could be that type of QB, heck he was that type in the Sugar bowl.
Nobody knew how to defend Leach’s offense. Heupel was a baller, knew how to read the defense, but his arm was weak. Not sure he could have played in the Big XII in 2008.
Agree he has the ability to make all the throws in the pocket and on rollout. The main thing I see is just making the right reads and taking what the defence gives him and with the right coaching and scheme that can be fixed that’s why I think I think it will be a knight and day difference from last year.
My problem with Baker is he throws to well covered receivers too much. He seems almost over confident to me. I know a QB has got to believe in himself, but also recognize his limitations.
But I like his completion percentage, deep throwing ability, and confidence. Yes, he needs to learn to not take as many risks, but I’ll take his shortcomings over TK’s inability to see the field and force passes at close range leading to game-losing pick 6s.
Totally with you. But other posters have said it was JH play calling. I got jumped all over last week for saying I thought Mayfield would be best for us.
I think JH gets too much blame for a lot of things, but that’s just an opinion. I’ve been wrong once or twice before! 😉
I got a nickel that says Hoover’s column tomorrow talks about Stoops shielding Mixon form the press.
I would think he would at the start of the year. As the season goes on & if Mixon is being successful he might have to letting speak with the press.
I’ve got a million guaranteeing you less headaches if you stop reading that hack.
Mike says a lot of the D’s schemes will stay the same. Mentions Kerry Cooks has done a really good job getting all the guys on the same page.
So we can expect the Corners to be 20 yards off in Waco?
I believe Cooks argued for 5 yards off so they settled on 19 yards off.
I thought it was 19.5?
That’s worrisome. Let’s double down on what hasn’t worked.
No reason to expect much in the way of changes. Mike is still DC.
Exactly why I wanted him gone last year. This move to the booth and change to LBs coach is just window dressing to try to cover up a larger problem (nepotism…and his unprofessional sideline behavior). Clearly Bob is banking on our offense to cover for our bad defense.
Well, I guess this will be his last season as DC.
Same room+ one voice= same page
Mike says Frank Shannon is still working off the rust a little bit
Mike says coaching LBs has helped to free him up a little bit in terms of coaching the defense as a whole
Mike says he doesn’t know how to define what good defense is these days in the age of spread offenses.
What? How about only giving up 24 points? I know OU will score 30 a game.
Seems to me Mike says “I dont know how” a lot over the last couple of years.
You’re right. I mean did he forget to coach while in the Arizona heat? In 2013, he did a good job, not great. But I am sick of Baylor averaging 40+ on us…
There aren’t a lot of DCs who consistently do that well against the spread offense, period. Saban, at times. Chavis at LSU comes to mind,
Patterson has done pretty well, pretty consistently.
60 by Baylor?
My exact thoughts.
It’s obvious when these things start where biases lie. Some here respect Patterson but hate and I do mean hate Mike.
It’s just like criminals against security companies. Criminals come up with ways to steal identities. Security companies learn how to stop those and criminals come up with new ones and around and around we go.
Spread offenses are made to put up points and lots of em. Even places like Oklahoma don’t put every single player in the NFL. So what happens? A spread exploits defensive players by making them cover a person or area for an extended period of time. Not easy to do. That’s exactly why scoring is up(every rule seems to lean to the offense, ie targeting and breathing on the qb). People who hate Mike will say this post is an excuse. People who still like Mike will say yep nobody stops the spread very well if at all
Well said. New year, new coaches, different strategy & synergy which affects players in a positive way. Looking forward to it.
Thanks. Its easy to see who on here is level headed and who is just done with the stoops bros. Why in the hell would Mike, in the PRESEASON press conference, roast his entire secondary, when there is a lot of talent but that talent happens to be young, which probably means a couple mistakes? It is a very very exciting time to be a sooner fan
Exactly. If he said they were going to be great, and they’re not, he’s an idiot. If he says they’re young (which is the obvious truth) he’s making excuses. He should just say no comment because no matter what he says or does, there are countless posters on here just lined up to rip him. It’s comical. I am a very positive guy. It works for me. Others clearly prefer the doom and gloom angle. Good luck w that! Try turning those frowns upside down.
Haha. To me, it’s always been that people who hate the stoops bros bought in whole hog when we won in 2000 and were blown away at how many titles could we win if he took us from a laugher to a title. Now they’re pissed at themselves for buying in instead of letting life play out and they’re deflecting their disdain for themselves on the stoops
because he plays 5 dbs, lots of man coverage and attacks.
Yep. MS needs to go back and check out how BV defended Taco Tech in 08.
He would do better watching his own films of his 1st few Ds in the early 2000s, they always shut Leach down.
Tech and Baylor generally do pretty well against TCU, don’t they?
I define a good defensive game as holding the O under its average. Or causing turnovers that help you win. We aren’t asking for shutouts here.
Fair enough. I would definitely be happy with 2008 numbers for sure.
That’s no good if your offense can’t outscore the opponent who is held below their average.
If your are saying it takes a good offense along with a good def to win, I’m with you. I’m assuming we’ll average more points than last year.
What I’m saying is that you can hold a team below their offensive average and if your offense can’t outscore them, that will still be considered poor defense.
Why?
The def did its job. Just as in baseball you get a great pitching performance 1 run allowed…but your bats go silent…it’s not the pitching that cost you.
Nope, but the coach will still get fired.
If he doesn’t know how he shouldn’t hold that position.
In his first stint, MS and Bobby new how to stuff the spread. They would tell you over and over that it starts with stopping the run. And, they had success against Leach and others with athletic QB’s. As the spread evolved, they have tried to evolve, but have not been able to unlock the system. One axiom, still holds true – the best defense is a great offense that limits the opponents opportunities.
This is a good point. They haven’t evolved with it. Perhaps the quantity of talented Wideouts throughout CFB is the reason. In the early years, OU DBS were able to match up. Now we lack a talent advantage against the likes of Baylor and TCU Secondary vis a vis WRS.
How many of our secondary made plays last year? Zach before he hurt his shoulder and that’s it. No Straits, Roy’s, Thachers, Thompsons or Onteis on this team.
I’d say the best defense is a great defense. The problem with our offense is that score or not, we’ll be giving it back to the opoonents with very little time off the clock.
Just don’t let the other team score more than our offense and we should be okay 😉
These are the comments that disturb me. He says things like this all the time.
Ask Saban the same thing in a spread league and see what he says since he’s been torched by uptempo spread teams
Saban’s defenses were built to stop power running attacks. Mike has been here three years. He should be able to at least define what constitutes good defense by now against spread offense. The problem is, his defenses also get torched by non-spread terrible offenses that have average to below average QBs and personnel. Texas with Swoops, OSU, Case McCoy, KSU, Clemson’s 2nd string QB, it goes on and on.
BS. There have been spread offenses long enough in the SEC that Saban doesn’t get to use that for an excuse. Nobody gave the OU defense that was built to defend the spread a break when they played SEC teams that had a power offense.
The only team in the SEC that runs an effective spread offense and has for any number of years is Auburn. And that doesn’t change the fact that terrible offense with bad QBs and 2nd string QBs STILL have field days against Mike’s defense…..over and over again.
Texas A&M and Mizzou have been doing a pretty good job the last 3 years. And don’t forget Spurrier and urban meyer at UF. Hal Mumme & Mike Leach were pretty good at UK in the 90s.
ATM did well against Bama with Manziel and Manziel only but Missouri never has. I don’t think Bama was prepared for spread offenses and ATM caught them entirely off guard. Last season Bama whipped ATM 59-0
aTm and Mizzou both have since they joined that league. UF ran a variation of the spread. They’ve played plenty of teams in bowl games that run the spread. SC runs a spread, though not always with good QB play. Ole Miss and Miss St. are new to the game, but both of them run it.
If Saban is still designing a defense only to stop the power run, he is ignorant.
the same us the NFL, scoring defense and turnovers. Less TDs and more field goals. I like that Mike is unguarded with his comments but am I the only one who thinks based on his comments that he sounds befuddled at stopping the spread. Hopefully Lincoln can help him get squared away. Geez!
That statement alone should cost him his job. I’ve never heard a coach admit to their own incompetence like that. He shoukd ask Pat Narduzzi, John Chavis, Dick Bumpas,or Lance Anderson how to defend these offenses.
I would settle for a defense that doesn’t completely bend over & take it, & hopefully one that can hold serve at least 50% of the time against the elite teams. Because surely, with the weapons we have on offence, OU can score at least on 60% of their drives.
Not to pile on, but I’m really, really tired of excuses like this.
https://twitter.com/john_shinn/status/630099368117309440
He’s had three years of recruiting.
Well Mike, love you, but if you can’t get young guys up to speed, we’ll have to find someone who can. Capece?
Cooks will have them ready. Young does not mean “not talented”, so hopefully we will all be pleasantly surprised. By the end of this year it could be a really deep secondary in regards to talent and making plays…..I hope.
Yes. Let’s go back to the Spring game and recall the secondary played pretty well.
I believe Bob knew what he was doing in hiring Cooks and for what reasons. Cooks will have the guys ready to play at a high level.
Capisce not capece
Thanks. I’m only 1/4 Italian. My bad.
You need to pick it up. You only spelled that word 71% correct. LOL!
HA. Good one.
10 credit hours of Italian at OU, baby!
Where’s the excuse? We are not real deep and we are young. I didn’t read where he said they wouldn’t be good because of that youth.
“Still,” in MS comment, implies a toning down of expectation.
Perhaps, I just didn’t read it that way.
I kind of did.
I guess I’m just trying to keep a positive outlook on this years defense until proven otherwise.
I definitely have a very positive outlook on the defense this year but I think that this comment is more of an “out” for Mike just in case.
Mike is talking to the media, players read what they write. That said, Mike doesn’t want to say they are great when every position not just secondary needs to improve.
Mike doesn’t need an out. Guys, a good coach never starts the season by putting pressure on his young guys. OU fans always have excessive expectations. Sometimes they come true, but it just doesn’t make any sense to fan these high expectations.
I wonder, is your a positive outlook that really represents high expectations or is it just we’ll be better than last year. There is a big difference. I just want to see improvement. I don’t expect the “best defense ever” or even a top 10 defense. I think we can be a playoff team with a top 25 defense.
I think with even top 40. Those 3 and outs KILLED our d last year
To answer your question, I guess it would depend on your definition of high expectations. I believe we’ll be quite a bit improved and at least top 3 defensively in our conference.
That’s the right thing to do. I am also. I expect them to be better. Boomer!
That’s not a bad thing.
If there was a question was asked of his secondary, what would we expect him to say? I want his honesty? I read his answer to say that with youth, we should expect some mistakes. I mean, can someone correctly answer a question such as “Do you still beat your wife?” and come out looking good?
Honesty is always the only way to go. Ain’t the question here. Yes, they are young, but it was the weak link last year. The whole country talked about it. What I am saying is it must be better. No excuses.
Mike says it every year.
Exactly. Some people just like to complain.
No matter what Mike says, he’s gonna get roasted.
Yep: the old “Do you still beat your wife?” question.
I can’t imagine any reasonable person would find our defense as a reason to jump for joy especially if it’s more of the same as recent years.
I agree, the defense wasn’t good last year. However, that was last year and I think there were a lot of issues outside of defense that played a factor. I always remembered a coach saying, the offense helps the D and the D helps the offense. Our Offense wasn’t helping anyone either.
This is a new year with what seems like coaches with synergy. I’m excited to see what unfolds.
Who said anything about jumping for joy? That said, we all wanted changes, and they made a few. Slightly different scheme, and a new DB’s coach. Also replaced a good DL coach with another good DL coach. Not like we are repeating last season with zero changes.
I’m really optimistic with Parker stepping up as a leader… I think he’s the real deal.
Experience at Linebacker… Jordan Thomas coming in to second year with some experience and hopefully the light bulb goes on for Charles Walker. Also, an offense that could take some pressure off the defense. There are definetely a few things to be optimistic about IMO.
Why so many people choose to live their lives looking at things from a negative standpoint while completely ignoring any positives will never cease to amaze me. I feel sorry for them to be honest.
I didn’t read it that way either. Just let the season start so we can see what happens.
So am I, sir. Im tiired of built-in excuses. This is the ultimate pre-excuse. Hoping to be able to say after a poor performance, “I told you we were young before the season began. I knew what I was talking about, so you shouldn’t be surprised team X just torched us.”
Poor coaching and a highly ineffective scheme are much bigger factors than youth in their shortcomings of last season. Quit looking for excuses, Mike, and do your friggin’ job!
In light of the fact that Ohio St won with three “young” QBs eliminates youth as an excuse for not playing well. Times have changed. Suck it up Mike.
EXCELLENT example!
Regarding defenses and top coaches, how did Saban do against that high flying offense?
Not very well. Over the last three years, Bama with the so-called no 1 D gave up 40 to Auburn zone read, 40 to OU, 40 to OSU.
How would you define a good defense in the Big 12 then?
45 to OU
I guess Saban doesn’t know what to call a good defense against spread teams either. I don’t mean to be a smartass, but it’s not easy and I’m talking to coaches all the time. Interesting to hear what they have to say.
Teddy Lehman said the same thing to me on the radio.
Nonetheless, there must be a barometer to measure good D coaches. I think your view is a minority view among OU fans and CFB fans in general. They argue that spread O get beat in bowl games all the time. Hence, somebody’s defending it well enough.
I’m not saying you can’t defend the spread but it just makes it more challenging than 3 yards in a cloud of dust. That’s my point with spread offenses. Attack on offense and get up and it becomes easier to call the defense. Being 109th in the country on 3 & outs will get you fired.
Well coached talented players and schemes will win. To me it’s about the DC putting his players in the best position to succeed. I agree, Mike hasn’t done that since he’s been back. However, there has been a lot of coaching turnover since Mike has been back and IMO that is a good thing. Again, I’m looking forward to this year and how the defense progresses.
Well, Mike had spent 7 years in the PAC where he rarely faced a quality spread team. And he was HC, not DC.
Everybody expected Mike to bring back the magic. Not easy the second time around.
To me the question is, are the players satisfied with how they’ve done. Last year was likely a direct result of beating Alabama.
I think we should face reality. We didn’t have the talent in the secondary that matched up with TCU and Baylor. Bob blundered against oSu and the team didn’t give a hoot against Clemson. They should be more that embarrassed by that performance.
How long has it been since we had a real leader, either emotional or a driver? I think Blake could have been, but Josh denied him the chance. I haven’t seen one on defense since Marshall.
I agree, we didn’t have the talent last year and no leaders stepped up. I looking forward to this year.
Travis Lewis.
Fair enough.
LSU hasn’t struggled against any spread offenses. They even shut down ATM with Manziel, twice.
They have consistently had first round db’s for years. Always loaded there. We have not been of late.
True. My point is that we can stop spread offenses. Read all above.
Well, that young QB in college will be young QB in the pros. Ouch! There goes your theory that youth doesn’t matter.
Not really. I can give you a whole list of underclassmen who were all-americans here’s the link: http://www.si.com/college-football/2014/12/15/college-football-all-america-team.
Get with the program sir. The game has changed.
I have. You haven’t, which is why you don’t appear to be able to cut Mike some slack.
College QBs take a step back in the pros.
I think MS did a good job in 2013.
Remember when the Stoops brothers first showed up in Norman and their mantra was, “no excuses”?
Times have changed……….
Excuse me, but how many great D1 defenses have you coached. Critics often know less than they think they know.
Actually, what you are tired of is losing to teams you think we should beat 100% of the time. In reality, we lost a lot of games over the past few years due to poor offense. The pro defenses give up 35 points a game. Defense is hard, the rules favor offense (for the fans benefit and thus the $.
While I didn’t like the scheme last year anymore than you did, I’ve also thought we asked our secondary to think too much. In some case they have to go against their instincts which made them vulnerable. So I haven’t been happy with Mike’s defense, but to me it’s only the result that counts, not what Mike or anyone else says to the media. In reality, whether it is the scheme or the talent, it doesn’t matter. I’ve learned over the years to put little faith in commentary. Remember how many times Switzer’s told us such and such player will leave OU with all the records. How often has that happened. I get really worried when Bob is optimistic. Talk easy, executing isn’t.
Simmer down dude. Geez.
Did you do your homework before jumping to conclusions?
Nope
We were young and not that deep in 2000. We had ballers. Thompson, Strait, Thacher, Roy and Ontei. We had 2 walk ones starting at LB and DE.
You left out BE. The best 6 college DBs I’ve ever seen on the field at once in 50+ years.
2 stud LBers and a no-name DL that got the job done by committee.
Everage was an absolute stud!
Of course, we didn’t have to cover a Baylor or TCU offense in those days, but if our starting secondary can play nealy as good as the 2000 bunch, we’ll be fine because our offensive talent is much, much better.
Mike complimenting Lincoln Riley’s using of personnel, spacing, and knowing how to use leverage.
lol Mike we’ve heard enough of whatever it is you’re saying…hows the offense look?
Should I take this as coach speak for the O is torching our D in practice?
“Boy Lincoln sure has had an easy time of torching my defense”
Iron sharpens iron hopefully
Just as long as it not like last year – hot knife through BUTTER.
Or round peg through square hole until there 0 second left on the game clock.
Or, maybe Mike is saying that having Riley as the OC that he’s helping Mike understand how offenses torch defenses. Maybe Mike is picking Riley’s brain to help him put his defense in a better position to succeed.
A good offense takes a lot of pressure of the defense.
It was certainly the opposite of that last year. You could see the D on the sidelines get down after the three and outs and turnovers. The D gave up in the Baylor and Clemson last year, IMO.
I hope you’re right! It’s good advice if he’s not doing it already!
Mike specifies Tapper & Striker as guys that have to be productive players, not just leaders.
Mike says Diron Reynolds is VERY different from most d-line coaches. Says he (Reynolds) is very cerebral in his approach.
That’s the NFL way. Hope that method works at the college level.
Didn’t watch their games but Stanford (where he was last year) was #3 defense in nation last year, you don’t get a top 5 D without a good d-line
that’s it w/ Mike
Can I ask you what was the jab/joke with the recruiting ranking which led Mike to answer the new guys will be average players?
s/b Riley up next
Sorry can’t watch it but are the coaches more upbeat than last year or still kind of beat down in their tone?
Riley says all three QBs made big strides this summer. Knows those guys are aware it’s a competitive situation. This is an offense in which you can improve a lot over the summer, you can work on it w/o helmets/pads on.
I’m still not buying that they haven’t selected their starter already, just not announcing it until near end of fall camp to keep them all on edge, competing.
Buy it. Reps are being shared pretty much equally.
All three are getting about equal reps? Wow. Well, at least we know the one who wins will have earned it.
I know, but not really a good thing this close to game 1, IMO.
Injury prevention, like a pitch count (TFB mentioned this already). And what prompted them to do that? Their starter having to rest several weeks due to shoulder “fatigue” (which is code for rotator cuff strain).
Also, I guarantee you right here and now CT has ZERO shot of starting unless both TK and Mayfield are injured. But he’s taking equal reps nonetheless.
TK seems to have more tools and BM looked decent in a similar offense. But I’m a long way from a ‘guarantee’ that CT won’t start. A lot of it depends on his accuracy on short and medium routes. Despite seeing him in several games, I draw few conclusions about his accuracy. One of many problems for CT and TK was decision making and knowing where their receivers were going to be. I’m not sure the receivers even knew where they needed to be. This was magnified by the type of offense. I think most assume CT and TK had accuracy issues, and that may be true. But I believe the inaccuracy was more a result of not knowing where to put the ball rather than an inability to accurately hit a target. Our new offense will greatly reduce those issues. Decision making will be simplified. Routes will be more consistent. The game plans will be very similar week to week. The more accurate passer will have a major leg up on the competition.
Riley says they have all their QBs on a ‘pitch count’ in terms of how many throws they allow them in practice.
Not sure I believe this right now, but would love to see it.
https://twitter.com/john_shinn/status/630103972628422657
I think a ton of it depends on the OL.
I believe it. I think we’ll see a ton of short passes to (mostly) Mixon and Perine and the other RBs along with their rushes of course
Me too. Not using your best assets properly is a recipe for disaster. Surely he wouldn’t do that. I haven’t seen anyone do something like that since…Mike Stoops on defense?
Tech had some good backs…that hurts us a few times. Baylor did as well. I think the offense can produce a 100 yard rusher every game.
Riley says you can make this system fit the QB
That’s what I’m counting on. Leach won a lot of games with very average QB’s putting up monster numbers.
This.
I watched last years games again and Trevor looked great in uptempo. However, Trevor looked lost when JH slowed it down and shot plays in at the last second. I don’t blame Trevor for this as it would confuse most QBs.
IMO, he looked lost AFTER the ball was snapped.
Have you re-watched the games from a tempo aspect? Just curious.
Thank you. No, the Tk9 haters choose to remember only the bad. It’s really sad.
I did the same last week. As soon as the offense went tempo Knight marched them down the field and scored. I was watching the play clock, in the early part of the game when the offense wasn’t working the ball was always snapped just before it expired. When they started moving and scoring the play clock usually still 15 seconds or more on it with no sideline checks.
Riley jokingly says he only got a few questions about how he plans to use the running game while he was singing autographs
Riley calls Bill Bedenbaugh the best OL coach in the country
Like this he knows how to find the big hog mollys and I think thats key in this offense with it being spread em out without a lot of lead blocking being labeled “soft” is my worse fear with a spread offence.
Don’t forget that OU was the original in running this offense in the Big 12. If you look back OU under Bradford would have 4 wideouts at times. I don’t think we’ll see a Tech-type air raid. I think we’ll have elements of Wilson’s offense as well. Hence, running the ball and power sets in the red zone will be part of it.
I believe Riley is a smart oc and obviously he wants to run the spread but i got faith he will utilize the weapons we have in the backfield and by useing mutiple sets we shouldn’t have any problems finding the end zone. Was a big fan of Wilson loved how he ran his version of the spread offence but he still knew how when to bring in a lead blocker in bigger sets to get those tough yardage.
Yeah we was fairly successful in 2000 running it 😉
Misspelled, that’s BedenBOOM.
Very SMART. I like Riley even better now. Keep the OL coach happy and it keeps the O-Line happy AND motivated – nobody likes to let down their “guy.”
Riley is still talking, but I gotta go.
Sorry, but thanks for hanging out today!
Thanks again.
Thanks for all the insight your the best, I followed you over her from the other site by far the best material you can find anywhere.
Riley said they are gonna pick 1 qb and stick with them.
Yes. But throwing pick sixes and not getting into the end zone enough will even put Brady on the bench.
Yes but it sounds like the whole two qb thing was put to rest.
That’s what he was talking about? Okay. I only want one QB a well. But bringing in the backup is part of football.
Bob did a great job. Lincoln Riley is a breath of fresh air compared to what we have had the last few years. Mike is a pain in the butt to listen to. So darn thin skinned and it is pretty sad and pathetic. Hate to be that way, but that is the way I see it. Hope we can figure out to play good defense in spite of Mike’s attitude.
I think he’s wishing he could of convinced Venables to stay jk
I don’t. He ran BV off for doing essentially the same thing Mike’s doing now. BV’s defenses fit better in the ACC where teams run much different offenses than we do in Big 12 country. Mike was brought in to fix BV’s mistakes and he’s evolved into BV 2.0.
I don’t think for one second he was ran off I agree with you his defence is suited for the acc with that being said I think they complimented each other so well that we would of ran the same defence where basically running this year nickel defence and we would of never had the problems we been plagued with the last couple years and yes Hine sight is always 2020 but make no mistake it was not a fluke Clemson had the best d last year
I don’t remember BV’s defenses ever just sitting back and taking it. He was always gambling with crazy blitz packages, and that sometimes bit him in the butt, but I couldn’t see him doing what MS did in the Baylor game last year.
BV was trying to play a soft zone against air raid spread offenses and he always got picked apart.
That 2011 Taco Tech debacle still haunts me, even worse than the 2014 Baylor game.
Yea for sure, that game was brutal. We were getting hammered then decided to start playing but it was too little, too late. Hunnicutt missed a chippy late that would’ve tied it.
I just remember all the short crossing patterns and screens that they used. Venables was clueless on how to stop or slow it down until it was too late to recover.
Screens screens oh my I dont think I ever seen it work more effectively, they probably couldn’t ran it any better in practice.
That field goal pretty much cost us a perfect season plus it snapped our rediculas home wining streak should of been a sign for things to come….. still can’t believe he missed that chip shot at home against ksu.
Trying to bliz your lbs on 3rd down and leaving the middle of the field wide open didn’t help
Agree totally Venables had some games where he absolutely shut teams down haven’t seen this a bunch from Mike so far yet.
I have never been a knight fan I was disappointed when he named the starter over bell, nobody in the country knew okalahoma would come out slinging it all over the field in the sugar bowl I’m sure the Alabama d thought if bells the starter they will run the spread but if knight the starter defend the zone read and the rest is history with that being said I think knight showed us what he’s capible in that style of offence aginst the best d in the country and last year did him no justice running basically the I fomation after Shepard went down. It seems he’s at his best when he can see the whole field and isn’t asked to hand the ball off on a predetermined zone read give to rb every other play.
Bob Stoops made it clear that Hal Mumme’s offense gave him fits in the SEC. Imagine having to face that every week. Let’s face folks. no one has figured out how to stop these air raid offenses. If you don’t believe me, if an SEC offense is not running an air raid offense, it will be a while before they win another National Championship.
Having a defense that shuts out an offense in the Big XII is an unrealistic expectation.
Moving to the spread is the best thing bob could of done yes good defence and running the ball wins championship alas Alabama but that’s not what most of the big 12 runs and if we want to keep up with all lighting quick offence in this offence we must adjust accordingly I was at the Baylor game last year and yes we can blame it on the defence playing 10 yards off every play and when it became apparent it was going to be a shoot we couldn’t produce.
In the past, we had QBS who could win the shootout games: Bradford/Jones. We need that type of QB now.
Give Tk9 3 capible receivers alas two year ago with with bester, Saunders and Reynolds a game plan that fits his skill set predetermined throws based on coverages and getting the ball out quickly with his wheels I think we will see the good Tk9 in this offence
Fair points.
SamSooner, we are not asking for shutouts. We are asking MS to slow down Baylor and TCU. Keep em under 30 and we’ll win.
I hear you. I understand what you’re saying. I know this is OU and they should be able to do that. But in fairness, who is?
Texas held Baylor 111yds passing last season. TCU only threw for 233yds. All while having no offense whatsoever to counter with.
DC, thanks for sharing that information. texsa was stout up front and they could get lots of pressure with four down linemen. That’s seven in coverage. That’s probably the difference.
There is an article on bleacher report on how tcu figured out to defend the spread good write up and it look eerie similar to what we will be running to an extend with the exception of a jack/stand up de
Thanks, William. I’ll check it out.
You won’t be disappointed I promise.
It look like where retooling our d to defend this while staying multiple and getting our best athletes on the field
Re-introduce the wishbone at a power-5 school and you’ll real DC’s around the country throwing real fits.
Didn’t Urban Meyer just win the national title by running the ball down people’s throats?
from early on, what did bobby say about walker
Should lead to recruiting better Qbs too. The check with me system probably cost us 20 possessions last year. Just sucked up time. Also, formations gave away the play, not to mention Josh’s predictable tendencies. When the 80 year old day behind me can call out the play, it has little chance of surprising anyone.
It would of worked better if that was the system we was running alas 2008 we all remember the key to that offence was getting the initial first down and boom we was off to the races plus we had the best offence in the country with that being Said, it works alot better when you have playmaker all over the field and that’s in my opinion is where it’s deadly being able to audible out attack a defence weekness on any given play having the athletes that can exploit a defence weakness.
How many possessions we did or did not lose b/c of the looking to the sidelines is a bad way to gauge if we should be doing it or not. We did it in 2008, and set all kinds of team scoring records.
Honestly, I don’t really care what we do offensively so long as a) we’re good at it, and b) it’s an offense that can be effective come bowl/playoff time.
More possessions (way more in ’08 than in ’14) means more scoring opportunities. Wilson was much more efficient as a play caller and Sam had latitude. All that changed with Josh, who got slower and slower every year. It’s simple, Josh is a control freak. i think a lot of the better teams figured out how to set the defense so Josh would change the play to one they expected. 10 audible a game is good. 60 audibles a game isn’t. That’s what Josh did.
More possessions also means your defense has to defend more possessions. We got away with it in 2008 b/c our D was solid, and our offense was SUPER efficient. Our offense hasn’t been efficient the last few years. Blame that on who you will, but it has little to nothing to do with how fast we’ve played. People were actually wanting us to slow down a couple of years ago.
Again, be good at whatever it is you run, and the “pace” shouldn’t matter.
OU was criticized back in 73/74/75 for scoring too quickly too.
Sometimes it seemed like opposing defenses would show one thing with a specific vulnerability. OU would send in a play to take advantage. At the last moment, the defense would shift to cover the vulnerability and attack the play called by OU. Josh would try to send in another play and we’d have to call time out or take a penalty.
A lot of spread offenses have trouble in the red zone, but with a solid O line, QBs capable of running, and power backs like Perine and Anderson, OU could be very effective in short yardage RZ.
Riley is smart oc if it 3 and 1 I think we will see some power sets I’m hoping his offence look similar to Kevin Wilson
interesting remarks about/from landry jones…….may be his stage tonite and make or break preseason……..good luck to him……..
