Big 12 Preseason Poll Announced

In a little bit of a surprise (at least for me), Oklahoma was voted No. 3 in the 2015 preseason Big 12 poll — as voted on by the media — which was announced Thursday afternoon. The full poll is as follows:

Whether or not you were surprised with where the Sooners were picked, the gap in first place votes between TCU and Baylor certainly came as a bit of a shock. Both squads are the obvious conference favorites, but the consensus seemed to be that despite a question mark or two they were relatively even, at least on paper. Evidently the media did not agree making TCU the prohibitive favorite according to their first place votes.

Regardless, these type of polls have a spotty track record at best in terms of providing any real predictive value.

Nevertheless, your thoughtS? Anybody picked higher than you would have though (oh I don’t know like maybe, Texas?), or possibly lower? Speak up below.

I wonder how many times these guys have been right in the last five years.

  • Dwebb96 says:

Actually, going into the season this is not a bad selection. With questions for the sooners at QB, I agree with their picks. Now the real test will be what things look like the first weekend in December.

  • Zack says:

I will say I’m shocked kinda by the votes. I think Baylor is the best team imo. I just think those 408 guys are going to kick themselves later for picking tcu. I’m not high on the frogs

OOOh, more paper for the virtual birdcage.

    • 47 Straight OU Know says:

You either have a lot of birds , or very large birds. If you need more I can send you my leftover copies.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Its a virtual birdcage if I need more space I just add an external USB drive.

I remember now seeing you and EasTex talking about computers yesterday. I am not very computer savvy. Still chicken pecking my way through.

          • Bob Edwards says:

No prob. I have been a programmer since graduating from OU in ’86. I forget everyone doesn’t understand nerd humor.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Could not tell you the first thing about programming a computer that’s for sure. I do know as long as there isn’t a BSOD. I’m good.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

So how did a nice guy from Grant wind up at OU? Or, maybe, how did a nice guy from OU wind up in Grant?

          • Bob Edwards says:

I have an uncle who worked for the Patriot Project Office. He helped my find a job with one of the local government contractors. When I graduated it was right in the middle of the oil bust and there weren’t many jobs in OK. Tried to move back and actually lived in Tulsa from ’96 to ’01 but the company I worked for folded and so I moved back here to work for a friend who was doing consulting. Now I have kids and grand kids living in the area so probably will never leave.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

So you are a U.S Grant Alum?

          • Bob Edwards says:

No I was born and raised in OK; Holdenville, in particular. Moved to Huntsville after college. Actually moved to Grant about three years ago. Decide to move out of town once most of the kids were gone. Got a really good price on a house in foreclosure. Good enough that it was worth the drive.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Oh, Misread the conversation between you and RocketCity. Thought you went to school at Grant. Sorry for the confusion on my part.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Nah, no problem. RocketCity is in Rocket City which is Huntsville, AL. I live in a small town about 30 miles from there. I could see it being confusing on an Oklahoma board.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Never been to Alabama, Man it was hard to write that word. But if I ever get that way I will ask for some good places to eat and see.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

I lived in Grant from 2009 till 2012. Loved Grant, but after retirement decided a bigger city had more support structure.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

An explanation. Back when CB was big, Huntsville Alabama was known as Rocket City USA. Huntsville was the original home of NASA and was where all the big rocket motors were designed. Still a big NASA town and where all the Army missile systems are managed. I was born in Wilson Oklahoma. Grew up during the Wilkinson days. Moved to Huntsville to work on Army missile programs.

I was never tempted to become an Alabama or Auburn fan. I’m not even a fan of OU joining the SEC. I don’t want OU to stay in the BigXII. Prefer B1G or PAC. Anyway the combination of Rocket City and Sooner sounds good and works well as a screen name.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

That sounds like a cool job. Still torn on what conference would be a good fit for us.

          • rphokc says:

curious, since you’ve lived in bama so long and you enjoy cfb, did you become a fan of sec fb and emotionally invested in the iron bowl battles

          • Bob Edwards says:

Since the board does not allow profanity my only response is “no.”

          • rphokc says:

            lol………I feel like I insulted you…….I apologize

          • Bob Edwards says:

Well, if we were in person, you might have been the recipient of a blunt force vasectomy. 🙂

          • rphokc says:

            relax, I felt the words……..

          • Bob Edwards says:

Just realize that calling me an SECer is figtin words and we will be fine. 🙂

          • rphokc says:

correction, I didn’t call you one, just asked if you became one which apparently is enuf……..carry on

          • JB says:

            Lighten up, Francis.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

Born in Oklahoma. Graduated OU in 1970 and went active duty. Would up at RSA in 1973. Guess I’ll never leave either.

          • Bob Edwards says:

It’s a nice place to live, if you can’t live in OK.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

The SEC media poll has Auburn winning the conference but finishing 2nd in the division. Not sure how that works.

  • Bob Edwards says:

Bill Snyder gets no respect despite always putting out good teams full of 2* athletes and JC transfers held together with duct tape and bailing wire.

    • 47 Straight OU Know says:

You are right about Snyder. Hell he could probably put a team together with the woman student athletes their @ K-State.

      • Bob Edwards says:

He could at least beat Kansas. I don’t think they have any scholarship players left.

        • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Hey as long as he beats the in state teams he should be able to stick around.

    • Zack says:

Yeah but he’s in a rebuild year.

      • Bob Edwards says:

        Isn’t he always?

        • Zack says:

jucos still need time to adjust. His teams are always competitive though just may not be conference title contention every year.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Didn’t say anything about a title. The media has them picked seventh. Seems low to me given Synder’s record.

          • Zack says:

I would flip them and wvu but thats about it. I would switch Texas and osu. And I’ve got OU 2nd. I can even see Texas third.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I think this year the CW might be right. The offense needs to replace the most productive skill players, and the defense loses some key players too.

      • Bob Edwards says:

I guess I just tend to give Snyder the benefit of the doubt. Too many times he has put out a decent team when he was supposed to rebuild. I am not saying they will win the conference. I just think it is unlikely they finish seventh.

    • j l says:

Look at KSU’s history under snyder though, he has 2-3 really good years, and then takes a huge step back for 1-2 years.

Just the nature of rolling with a team full of juco’s.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Could be, just don’t remember them finishing that low very often under Snyder.

        • j l says:

They went 6-6 in 2001, after an 11 win season in 2000.

They went 4-7 in 04 and 5-6 in 05, after an 11 win season in 03

8-5 in 2013 after an near national title game appearance in 2012.

I see them being anywhere between 5-7 and 7-5 this year.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Well 7-5 gives them at least four conference wins, which puts them higher than seventh. So we both could be right.

          • j l says:

Very well could be. Parity and attrition might be the name of the game for the big 12 this year, could be like 2 years ago when we sent 9 teams bowling.
Besides ISU and KU, every conference game is realistically losable for anyone.

  • KJ1123 says:

Yeah I dont see how Texas is that high…..someone must of been high.

  • DCinAZ says:

TCU has a QB that could possibly be making a Heisman run and isn’t replacing anybody.

I would have WVU at #4

I think the BIG XII is going to be nastier this year than people expect.

    • Finney56 says:

I think WVU is going to be better than people expect. Losing Trickett (concussion) and White (NFL) hurts, but giving Howard experience will help them a lot.

I will also say that preseason hype doesn’t necessarily mean a ton. Knight got a ton before last season and we all know how that ended

  • Jason Vos says:

I like how all these pundits are forgetting TCU lost their long time DC, and Baylor lost their long time OC.

    • DCinAZ says:

I think the reason for that is because Baylor’s real OC is Briles and TCU’s real DC is Patterson.

      • Jason Vos says:

They don’t call the plays, so I don’t see how that applies. Just like saying OU’s real DC is Bob Stoops.

        • DCinAZ says:

It’s their offensive and defensive systems that are being run. They’ll have understudies that will step in and not miss a beat.

          • Jason Vos says:

We had a system too, yet there was an obvious drop off in play calling from Kevin Wilson to Josh Heupel

          • DCinAZ says:

Kevin Wilson’s system was different than Long’s who was different from Leach’s. Heupel had no system at all which is why his playcalling appeared to be the grab bag full of plays from his predecessor’s playbooks that it was. Heupel never was, and I don’t think he will ever be, an offensive coordinator. He doesn’t have the instincts or the in-game awareness. I distinctly remember Wilson coming under fire for his play calling on several occasions as well.

As for Heupel’s performance in the Sugar Bowl, it’s a good point, and that’s why I don’t believe that was really his game plan. I don’t believe that for a second. I have ZERO proof of that, but I think he had a LOT of help planning for that game from somebody.

          • JB says:

There are some parts I agree with but other parts I don’t. Josh was one of the smartest players on the field as OU’s QB. His game awareness and field vision were superb. I don’t believe that these abilities evaporated once he became a coach. He essentially ran a mix of Leach & Wilson principles until Bob wanted to go to a base zone read and midline option style offense from the pistol formation, which wasn’t JH’s strength. Bob brought in Chris Ault to teach that offense, and they started recruiting QBs to fit that system. Then, as soon as the season started and Glass Joe #9 started getting hurt whenever someone sneezed or farted too close, and Bob wouldn’t run the QB run game they prepared for. So Josh was stuck with QBs that didn’t fit his philosophy, a new scheme that he wasn’t allowed to run, a team riddled with key injuries…and still his unit was the greatest strength we had being the #23 scoring offense in the country.

        • j l says:

Kendal briles put up 600 yards passing on MSU in his debut(even though they had negative yards rushing), thats not a shabby debut lol.

          • Jason Vos says:

Josh Heupel beat Alabama. Yet he is out of the job

          • j l says:

While thats very true, it wasnt josh’s debut either. Just saying theres no reason to believe baylors offense will skip a beat, even with the 1 game sample size of their new oc.

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

I guess I should have read your comment before I commented…

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

Nah…Balyor’s OC is their HC. The other guy was just a student.

      • JB says:

You mean the same way Mike Mike Leach was just the student to Hal Mumme? Hal Mumme was the HC & the OC, Leach was the OC in name only.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

The B12 needs more media, so almost everyone can get at least one first place vote

  • j l says:

Some people would rather take boykin, but give me the team with 3 preseason all americans on their lines.
Honestly i think baylor should be the overwhelming favorite, they return 17 starters, while TCU lost a ton on defense.

TCU gets love for their destruction of ole piss, while baylor gets hated on for choking 2 straight big bowl games away.

I think our 2013 win over bama shows you shouldnt put too much stock in a bowl game outcome lol.

    • MrBigsby says:

Not trying to justify it, but I think TCU is getting the nod because of a Heisman candidate, returning QB, whereas Baylor will have a new starter.

      • j l says:

Even last year, petty had a 12 point advantage in QBR over boykin(far more accurate, far more YPA, less INT), but boykin was the one getting all the hype.

People are easily swayed by hype.

Besides, when is the last time a baylor QB was bad? been like 6 years now. Russell will do fine.

TCU destroyed a SEC team in a bowl game, and has a heisman contender QB, so they are getting mad love.

Look at the 2 objectively though, set aside the hype, and baylor rises to the top, IMO.

        • MrBigsby says:

I said I wasn’t trying to justify it, just stating what the media is looking at.

          • j l says:

i hear ya. Media definitely dosent always do their homework, thats for sure.

          • Zack says:

They definitely don’t do their homework. I know I’m out on an island but I’m saving my posts about tcu going 9-4 or 10-3. And OU going 11-2. I think OU has a good chance to go 12-1 depending on the bowl situation. Baylor is the only loss I would write in pen. And I would also write tcu and osu as wins in sharpie.

    • Zack says:

Tcu hasn’t been the favorite like this before. They will get the best shot from everyone and I’m picking losses to Baylor, OU and Texas.

      • j l says:

ya im thinking 9-3/10-2, a step back for sure. Still gonna be a good, top 10-15 team.

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

Especially one against a SEC team.

    • JB says:

Washington had 3 all Americans on their defense and they still sucked.

  • Doobie74OU says:

It may just be me but I think Kansas received a few to many votes and should be ranked much lower!

  • MrBigsby says:

I think K-State and WVU should be up a bit, and Texas down a few spots. I also see OSU above OU. Damn that hurt, but hey, they have a stud QB and we have a ? there, not to mention they beat us on our home field.

    • Finney56 says:

OSU has a good QB, but I would like to point out that they lost almost all of their run game in Roland and Hill. Plus, I’m not sold on that team and would also like to point out that the reason that they won that game got removed from the program for punching his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach…

      • MrBigsby says:

But they also have the (pre-season) Newcomer of the year at RB, so I think they will be fine in the running department. They have a ridiculously easy non-con schedule to boost confidence. I don’t like playing OSU when they are confident. And The Freak, wasn’t the reason they won that game. That credit goes to Bob for punting in the first place!!

        • j l says:

didnt chatmon or trotter say today they would pick westbrook for newcomer of the year?

I know the media picked carson, but meh, what do they know, lol.

        • FreakyT says:

          in the second place*

    • lefty67 says:

Agree that Rudolph looked good in his 3 games, but I need a bigger sample size before I can get totally on board there. When it comes to pass efficiency defense last year, OU was actually the BEST one he faced, & I don’t think anyone on here is going to be writing too many glowing reports on that aspect of the ’14 Sooners any time soon.

  • T. says:

I think it is probably pretty accurate. I would throw out the word potential for reasoning behind our ranking, but I don’t think anybody on here is a fan of potential because that implies it has to be realized. That is a big question mark for us. Baylor should be first. TCU is a great squad, but they reached their ceiling last year and it will be very difficult for them to be better or as good as they were.

  • Cory Reedy says:

How did Kansas get 45 votes for anything? : )

    • Bob Edwards says:

There are probably 45 voters. 10 points for first, 9 for second … 1 for last. 45 last place votes equals 45 points.

      • Finney56 says:

There were 42 voters. TCU got 32/42 1st place votes and Baylor got the other 10

        • Bob Edwards says:

Well that is hard to explain then. Someone must have misunderstood what they were voting on then.

          • Finney56 says:

Right? Unless they voted for Iowa State as 10… But even still that doesn’t make a ton of sense

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

It’s amazing how more realistic the big12 media is compared to the SEC.. Vandy was the only SEC school that didn’t get a 1st place in their division…

  • Cush Creekmont says:

    I pick sexat to SUCK.

  • Sooner Ray says:

We are above lil bro and texsa as it should always be, those two wannabe’s at the top will get what’s coming to them soon enough. 🙂

  • Zack says:

I’m gonna go with bb brought the fireball to the coaches meeting.
