Team Note | Baker Reinvigorated: Spoke to a source yesterday who told me Baker Mayfield ‘seems reinvigorated’ since being named the starter. This person said Mayfield seems to be playing a little looser. Apparently, the team was practicing a “2-minute drill” yesterday and it only took Mayfield all of three plays to lead the team down the field for a touchdown.

Apparently the touchdown came when Mayfield connected on a long completion with Jeffrey Mead, who then took it another 30 or so yards into the end zone. As a side note, Mead has apparently spent a decent amount of time recently running with the first team offense.

Bob Stoops said on Monday they plan on releasing a depth chart sometime this week and while I don’t expect Mead to be listed as a starter, running with 1’s in a 2-minute drill may tell us something about how the coaches feel about him as a down-field, big play receiver. – (Super K)

Team Note | Knight With A Dime: Although Mayfield as QB1 is obviously taking the majority of the snaps, there are still opportunities for the other QBs to make plays as well. And according to one source that’s exactly what Trevor Knight did yesterday.

He was leading the team in the red zone and evidently connected with Mark Andrews on a beautiful throw in the corner of the end zone. I was told the defensive back was in position, but between Andrews’ size and the dime Trevor dropped, nothing could be done. And credit Andrews as well for making a one-handed grab on the play.

Based on everything we have heard coming out of fall camp, expect Andrews to be a primary target in the red zone. – (Super K)

Team Note | Austin Roberts & Du’Vonta Lampkin Impressing: Saw this tweet from the Tulsa World’s Eric Bailey yesterday about recent arrival, DE Austin Roberts.

I was told that they did some 1-on-1 type pass rush drills yesterday and Roberts was essentially unblockable. There is certainly more to playing defensive line than just rushing the passer, but even in his short time on campus there has definitely been no shortage of praise for Roberts.

After his initial arrival was delayed due to some transcript issues, it seemed possible (maybe even likely) Roberts may not play and/or have much of an impact in 2015. But if you are prepared to take these numerous public comments at face value, it sounds as though the OU coaches are very excited about what he could add to this defense.

Another guy who I’m told was doing some 1-on-1 pass rush drills — but was only in a helmet, shirt & shorts — was another recent arrival in Du’Vonta Lampkin. A source shared that Lampkin was surprisingly difficult for several the opposing offensive lineman to handle at times during the drill. – (Super K)

so either our pass rush is going to be INSANE..or our OT’s are going to be terrible

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

It’s always difficult to interpret OU playing against OU. QBs throw INTs, the QB is bad or the DBs are good. DEs/DTs are getting a lot of pressure on the QB, the OL is not good or the DEs/DTs rare really really good.

This year, it seems that OU’s offense and defense might be good. If two boxers are trading blows, but not going down that is a wicked fight. If OU’s offense and defense are making big plays on each other, then that’s good in my eyes.

    • KJ1123 says:

It’s not necessarily always the OT’s, heard yesterday that he is also playing the 3. I think he’s pretty light to be there but it sounds like the coaches are moving him around to find out where he fits best.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

With the positive reports about O Brown it won’t be the LT that will break us. My question is RT.

  • PLAW0720 says:

Glad to read about Roberts and Lampkin. With reporting late, what is there overall physical condition? I was highly concerned Lamp would show up out of shape. If his conditioning is good, then it speaks volumes about his commitment, sense of urgency, and focus during some adversity that other youngsters may not have been able to handle.

    • MoJoOkie says:

Makes me worry a little about our OL. I’m not typically a pessimist, but the OL may make us or break us for a successful season.

  • Matt says:

honestly though from what I hear out of camp, it sounds like OU is going to be DEEP at every position but OL and DB…but I remember several freshmen DBs playing big roles in the 2000 championship run! One of the biggest factors in national championship teams is depth and it sounds like OU might have it!

    • Scott Moore says:

      Yep, Straight and Everage!

      • Matt says:

        Roy Williams too right?

        • Scott Moore says:

He was a soph. Juco transfer.

          • Sooner 4Ever says:

Roy Williams was not a juco. He was a high school signee from California in Blake’s last class in ’98. Close friend of fellow ’98 signee Damian Mackey. Redshirted in 98, played in 99, 2000, and ’01 before declaring for the ’02 draft.

          • Scott Moore says:

Might be thinking of Torrance Marshall. We had a couple of signees from California that were big contributors out of the same Jr. College if my memory serves me. Which, as you can see, it don’t always. Thanks!

      • hemisooner says:

        CB Thompson???

    • Sooner 76 says:

Straight and Everage (dime back) were RS freshmen, Roy a sophomore, Michael Thompson a sophomore, FS JT Thatcher and Ontei Jones (NB) were seniors.

  • OUWade says:

Knight’s best throws seemed to be deep passes down the sideline, similar to what it sounds like he threw to Andrews. I’ve heard arguments that Mayfield’s arm strength isn’t the greatest, but how does he look “dropping those dimes” like we’ve seen Knight do a couple times. Just seems like with some of the taller/faster receivers we have, those deep throws to the sideline could be seriously dangerous if we can get them out there.

    • cpearc00 says:

While I agree Knight has thrown some accurate “deep” passes down the sidelines, it makes me cringe every time he does it because he seems to just lob it in the air as high as he can and, oftentimes, the receiver (Shepherd) has to pull back to make an incredible catch. This could be intentional, but the technique just doesn’t do it for me. But hey, can’t argue with the results.

      • soonerthunder says:

Heupel and TK worked hard on the deep pass during the previous off season and I thought it paid off. I thought he did a pretty good job of them last year overall. It really helped the O b/c he was good enough that it helped the run game; it always does. The D certainly had to respect the possibility and OU seemed to throw a very large number of long passes last year. They did not have to respect the long pass with Bell. Immediately it was obvious (in the Tulsa game I saw it) that Bell couldn’t throw a pass very far and UT and every other team saw that too, and, as a result, we couldn’t run well either. Teams covered/pressed the short pass, and played against the run, and our O couldn’t move b/c Bell was weak w/the intermediate and long pass. More 3 and outs than I’ve ever seen for an OU team, all b/c of the QB’s inability to throw intermediate/long. Long passes are low % passes and always hurt a QB’s passing % but they help a team. Even long pass incompletions help b/c they keep the D thinking about the possibility and playing a little back on on their heals. It opens everything up better: shorter passes and the run. While I thought TK threw the long pass pretty well last year, he struggled with the short and intermediate pass I thought. I thought that the passes he was called upon to throw were really not his cup of tea. I think the O was more for a P. Manning / C. Thomas type QB, n/a Russell Wilson / TK type QB. This O will help TK complete a higher % of passes if he plays much.

        • soonermusic says:

“Bell couldn’t throw a pass very far” The internet is sometimes like the zombie apocalypse. No matter how many times a topic is settled it keeps coming back to life. πŸ™‚ The notion that Bell couldn’t throw the ball very far was argued by many in the face of Stoops’ frequent statements to the contrary (“he has a great deep ball”). Until finally it was laid to rest in the Tech game when Bell demonstrated his ability to easily toss a ball over 50 yards in the air to a streaking Saunders. Bell had some issues but having a huge arm and the ability to throw far was not among them.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

That’s some great news about Mayfield. I imagine it has to be a big relief knowing the competion is over and you can do what you do. (Although the back-ups won’t back down in terms of competition.) His confidence has to be beaming….it was nice to read that story that came out in TFB Daily News perhaps a couple of days ago, talking about every hurdle Mayfield has gone though which has proved the guy is a fighter and loves competition.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

I expect Mead to become a major contributor by mid season. His height and hands are perfect for deep balls and in the redzone

  • OceanDescender says:

I thought baker always seemed loose and savvy. I’ve not had the privilege to see an OU team quarterbacked by a maverick-type character; Blowmar doesn’t count haha.

  • SoonerFreak31 says:

Will you guys have the depth chart posted when it comes at?

  • Brad Warren says:

Damien Williams is a pretty damn, good NFL back – Capt. Obvious. In all seriousness, is there another school that has 3 starting running backs in the league, 2 of which, are superstars? Probably not very hard to recruit that position for us.

    • hemisooner says:

Cale Gundy enough said. When Riley leaves and gets a head coaching position. I want him to be the next OC.

      • Brad Warren says:

No doubt. I would love to see Cale as OC, then HC someday. Great guy and coach!

        • Fear The Magic says:

Riley as HC when Bob leaves Gundy as OC and Heupe can come back and be the QB coach again ( which he did pretty well when that was his only job )

      • RBear says:

I can see Cale and LR sticking together for awhile- I think they’re “on the same page”.

    • boomersooner says:

Damien’s not the starter. Lamar Miller is. But if he gets hurt, Damien will.

And Bama with Ingram, Lacy, and Yeldon is the only other I can think of

  • dallassooner says:

Now that’s the OU 2 minute defense I remember.

  • 47 Straight OU Know says:

10 Days to go and we will see some….

  • Jason Vos says:

If you listen to Jeff Mead’s interviews you can tell the guy is very smart. But what I like about him is that he comes off as cocky. He comes off like no one can cover me, or the DB was only able to cover me because of things I did wrong not because he was better than me.

I think this attitude has helped him earn a place in the starting lineup, That cockiness also shows with the multiple one handed catches he has made all preseason. Like not only can I beat you with my route, but I will catch the ball with one hand also and there is nothing you can do about it

    • Oscar says:

His cockiness probably is coming from his realization that he has excellent athletic skills and talent. That God given stuff sure builds self confidence, and he has worked to develop it.

    • RBear says:

Did you see the video of him snagging a punt one-handed?

    • soonermusic says:

I hope everyone is correct about Mead, here. He clearly came in with huge physical talent, and was expected to contribute last season, even. But the few times he made it on to the field, he looked lost, imho. Maybe it was the big stage, but he seemed to be one of the one’s the coaches were calling out, based on practice performance as well, as the season progressed, and he certainly didn’t see much action. I see no reason, based on everything folks are saying about him, that he couldn’t break out this season tho’….hope so.

  • Jason Vos says:

I wonder how good the offense would have been if DGB stayed for his senior year.

    DGB – Andrews – Shepard – Westbrook

  • cdzendolet says:

I’m super excited to see this offense and defense doing work on Saturdays. Season is so close I can taste it!

  • EasTex says:

    I like this team.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

I really like the idea of Mead running deep routes, Shepherd and Westbrook working underneath or in the middle, and a guy like Mixon or Perine in the backfield. Add in a big target like Andrews, or another black/blocker, and our offense should be tough to defend in space. If we can’t get guys open this year, maybe we should give up football.

  • KJ1123 says:

Asked about Orlando yesterday and apparently he is making almost zero mental errors, the least of anyone on the line, barring any setbacks I think he’s a lock to start. Right next to him it looks like Danley is getting back into the rotation at LG. No changes anywhere else on the line.

    • Krys Allen says:

Since you seem close to the action, were you shocked at all that BM was named the starter? I kind of feel like he would have had to have been doing quite well to unseat Knight. You would think if it was a pretty close race that the incumbent would have won.

      • KJ1123 says:

I wasn’t shocked, but I wouldn’t of been shocked if TK was named as well. It felt like the coaches were always comparing the other two QBs to what Baker did in the spring. As K stated, I too heard that Baker looked REALLY good in that 2 minute drill. I think the change in his gameplay was really noticeable.

      • SoonerSpock says:

I am inclined to think that with BM running the air raid at Tech he was probably more instinctive than Trevor at making the reads. If so this would allow him to get rid of the ball a count or two earlier than Knight and if he can rein in his gunslinger mentality Baker brings more to the table. We must not forget in inexperience of the OL.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I think this can only be a good thing. That dude has TONS of potential. If he is already one of our best, sky is really the limit for him the next 2-3 seasons.

    • Matt says:

Is Frison going to get to play this year?

    • Jason Vos says:

so Farniok still the back up LT, with St.John starting at RT?

      • KJ1123 says:

Yep, Farniok played a little RT yesterday as well because
        St. John was sidelined briefly.

        • Jason Vos says:

So it sounds like Farniok is first of the bench at RT or LT

          • KJ1123 says:

Basically, he is first on the Left, and servicing the right when needed, Samia is the 2nd on the Right at the moment, he just played some RT because of the way the rotation was at that time, Samia had just came out.

        • Mr. Jones says:

          Evans is redshirting, right?

          • KJ1123 says:

They haven’t said anything yet. OU has a process for announcing their redshirts so it may be a little while before we know.

  • SavageSoonerEsq says:

It should be requirement that every OU linebacker wears a neck roll. Just looks a little bit meaner than going without. Damn I remember wanting to jump through the TV and celebrate this one with the team. Ranks right up there with Keith Jackson’s reverse and “the Superman” play. If Marshall doesn’t make this play it’s doubtful that they would’ve been in the NC game that year.

        • pitbull17 says:

The cowboy collars do look intimidating and I tried to wear one my sophomore season. Those things are uncomfortable as hell. I could never get used to it, I couldn’t move my neck hardly at all. Which is what they’re made for, to prevent whiplash.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Yep, no shame in hitting him with another body if he becomes an issue.

      • Fear The Magic says:

Well if we’re to believe what we’re reading (taking gulp of kool aid ) They’ll have to be double teaming Lampkin and Austin Roberts and Overton and Obo. Thats 8 offensive lineman. That’ll leave them with 1 QB 1 RB and 2 WRs. Sounds like a plan.

    • SamSooner says:

      Well, two things:

      1. If that’s the starting center, Tennessee has an issue to worry about as well.
      2. The center allow McKenzie to get into his body.

    • Golfluvr13 says:

I see several underneath screens coming to use his aggressiveness against him.

      • Fear The Magic says:

Exactly. Slip Mr Mixon out on a few underneath screens and that’ll slow him down some.

        • Golfluvr13 says:

Yep, I can see a LOOOOOONG run after the catch, and that was what I thought when I saw this.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

Meh, he looks okay. Nothing special…….. actually looks like a beast.

    • thebigdroot says:

The guy trying to block him looks more like a punter than a center.

      • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I wonder if that’s a method of intimidation by Tennessee. They seem to post a lot of vines like this, with coaches and players standing in the way so you can’t really see what’s happening. Looks impressive, but we don’t know who is blocking him.

    • CrimsonNative says:

I wish we would have landed him.

    • jonnyBgood says:

That looks like me posterizing the neighbor kid on my 8′ goal. Just saying. I think Ty will more than hold his own.

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

At Tennessee the incoming players wear a black stripe on their helmet and it doesn’t get removed until their position group decides the player has earned his white helmet. He’s still got his stripe at the end of August so there must not be too many of these highlights from him.

I wonder if some of the news TFB were hearing about the emergence and increased reps from Knight and Thomas here toward the end were just the coaches trying to figure who #2 was. Sounds like they had Mayfield pegged as the started for several weeks now, even before the shoulder fatigue issue. Anyone else agree? If that’s the case, they must feel really good about him as ‘the guy’.

    • RBear says:

I threw that out there a while back and it got poo-pooed. I still think it’s possible that they were resting BM in preparation for the coming Air Raid.

    • SoonerSpock says:

I’m inclined to think that BM need to rein in his gunslinger mentality and quit forcing passes into tight windows that created turnovers. Once they saw strides in that regard they made the decision. Stoops, even with Riley at OC, is not going to tolerate a QB with a propensity to turn the ball over my making bad decisions.

I thought I would share this bit from a article from Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about Coach Monty and what he’s been doing for the Packers. I was born in Milwaukee thereby have always been a Packer fan. We moved down here when I was a pup and have been a Sooner loyalist since the early 80’s. I was crushed when I heard we lost Monty but I can’t lie that of all the places he could’ve went the Packers were the only team that could ease the blow…enjoy and have a great day Sooner Nation:

Doing it all: When McCarthy created the position of defensive front assistant and hired Oklahoma’sJerry Montgomery over Wisconsin’s Dave Aranda, he said the newcomer would serve as right-hand man to defensive coordinator Dom Capers.

    He wasn’t kidding.

Montgomery, 35, spends a good portion of his workload assisting the 65-year-old Capers in tasks large and small.

“Old Dom still writes a lot of stuff out by hand,” Capers said last week. “So that stuff goes to Jerry, and Jerry puts it into the computer. Our PowerPoint presentations, all those things.”

Capers is a legendary figure filbert.

“All the statistical things that I do after the game, Jerry gets those,” he said. “He has to plug those in so I can keep my self-scout stuff and know what we’re calling and what’s good and what’s not so good.”

The defensive staff meeting room is between the offices of Capers and Montgomery.

“He probably gets tired of seeing me come in there with my stuff,” Capers said. “I always need a guy like that because I’m kind of an old-school guy. I need a guy that’s pretty good with a computer.”

Last year, defensive assistant Jason Simmons worked directly under Capers. He was promoted to No. 2 coach on special teams.

Montgomery left coach Bob Stoops’ staff as the new co-defensive coordinator after serving as defensive line coach for two seasons.

When Montgomery isn’t working for Capers, he assists Mike Trgovac with the defensive line during the week and on game day. In February, Montgomery expressed the desire to become a coordinator.

“Jerry’s a good young coach,” Capers said. “Any of the guys on the defensive staff, if I can help them in any way and prepare them for the next step, I feel kind of an obligation to do that. I always have.”

    • Krys Allen says:

Sounds like an administrative assistant to me… lol. Im sure it will lead to something good though.

      • jonnyBgood says:

McCarthy has plans for him and that’s why he created this position. I know some of the tasks may be AA’esque but he gets to work side-by-side with Dom Capers and I think that will only serve him well in the long run.

Sounds like one hell of an opportunity to me. To be connected at the hip with one of the game’s better practitioners? Golden chance to learn.

        • SamSooner says:

And that learning is enhanced when you are entering handwritten notes into a computer.

          • Jed says:

Non snarky answer: there are different ways to learn things. The US/Euro model leans heavily on teaching theory and letting the student then apply the theory. Confucian societies tend toward more of an apprentice model in which you do as your teacher does until you master a skill. The theory emerges organically. JM’s having to be Caper’s shadow might just permit him to soak up the older man’s accumulated experience more holistically than trying to cram it all into his head in study sessions. It’s at least a valid way to learn.

I saw something on one of the food networks where a chef was practically reaching an orgasm in an Asian country over the noodles a cook there makes. I thought he was crazy at first for gushing so much over simple noodles. But he had spent 12 years or more as an apprentice before he was considered good enough at making noodles to do the actual cooking part as well! They hand make them starting at 400 AM every morning and there are untold intricacies to creating the noodles that requires study and practice. People now make reservations weeks ahead and line up for his noodles for hours every day, and he is highly esteemed for being simply a great noodle maker. All of the food experts and chefs swear that ordinary noodles are as different from his as Ferrari’s are to minivans. It was actually quite fascinating and his manual dexterity was astonishing. He was like a magician in cutting and creating them. It was as much art as it was culinary science and he really was as great at what he does as Michael Jordan was at basketball. Something so mundane had achieved almost mythic proportions in their culture and out of all of them he was the best there ever was. Fascinating. Be the best you can be at what you do, and WHAT you do is irrelevant…

          • paganpink says:

Cool. Amazing that you found something relevant so fast! The real guy was real life, though, and if the temperature for instance was more then a few degrees wrong at certain points when cooking them their texture is changed and they are ruined. He wasn’t talking to them- he really just KNEW noodles to such a profound extent it would seem ridiculous in western culture.

          • EasTex says:

About the only thing I miss from Japan is those wonderful noodle shops, the consomme is incredibly pure.
That is a clip from the movie “Tampopo.” If you haven’t seen it is awesome and is available in full on utube. It’s about food and eroticism.

  • David Raath says:

Does watching the Lampkin video beating Danley have anyone else concerned about the lack of size on the o-line? I know it’s a very small sample size, but Danley looked noticeably undersized in comparison. I know several of them lost double digit pounds over the offseason, with most of our guards now under 300 lbs. BB deserves benefit of the doubt, he’s a heck of an OL coach, but it could be of concern going forward against bigger, physical d-lines.

    • JD says:

With the hurry up they will be able to play faster and we will catch the D off balance no matter how big they are…they will get tired and we pull away late

      • David Raath says:

I understand it’s all under the guise of the new offense, but when we match up against bigger, more physical d-lines, we’re going to run into issues. I think it’s going to be either feast or famine with the line this season.

        • Fear The Magic says:

Bigger, more physical d lines will tire out faster. All the better.

        • ccmosaic says:

Truth be told there will be times of both feast or famine. A new O will at times stall simply because it is the first year to be ran. But once the team picks it up and grows into it we will be fine.
This year we will take a couple hits but next year and the year after…watch out.

    • Clint Lenard says:

They’re in the shape as part of the new offense.

      • Fear The Magic says:

        This^^
I have to believe that Riley wanted his OLine to get lighter and quicker to adjust to his offensive scheme.

    • KJ1123 says:

Danley doesn’t have the best technique, which is why he’s not in the starting group. He’s not a small guy by any means.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Can’t have it both ways. If we get too big on the oline, they’ll never be able to keep up the pace our offense will probably try to play at, and they can struggle with the quick rush ends. Too small and they can’t always overpower the dline for the power run game. No oline is perfect. Just gotta get them good at what they are going to be good at, and playing together. I think they’ll be fine, personally.

      • Matt says:

I just don’t want to see another tight end playing tackle and fullback playing center again. I understand Eldridge at center was due to injuries but Mensik started at tackle even when guys were healthy…Let’s not forget the goal line issues against A&M in ’10

        • Boom says:

Hate to have another 1st rounder like Lane Johnson move from TE to OT. Ikard did pretty well at center from his TE position.

        • Cam says:

I’m convinced Eldridge could have been an NFL lineman if he had another year to play and no injury.

          • Daryl says:

Ya I still remember that Peyton Manning singling out Eldridge as an incredible blocker but he never stayed healthy.

        • Daryl says:

One of those TE’s was a first round pick. Lane Johnson. If a TE can gain the appropriate weight and strength then let them use their athleticism on Oline

    • Sooner 76 says:

I do want a 300 pounder at the 3-tech position for just that reason.

    • Daryl says:

      What video?

    • j l says:

Got a link to the video?

I hear ya. First signs that summer is on its way out. Shorter days, longer shadows, and our first break from humidity (Houston folks). With CFB less than 2 weeks away, it is all coming together.

          • thebigdroot says:

I was in Houston a couple weeks ago. It’s been nice up here since I’ve been back but before we left the humidity was consistently around 85%. Couldn’t walk ten feet without sweat running down your butt crack. That sucked.

          • rphokc says:

            tmi

          • thebigdroot says:

          • rphokc says:

way back, in my runaround youth, I worked on barge lines in the houston ship channel……..believe me, I remember the humidity and the sweat baths

          • thebigdroot says:

A lot of people don’t realize how humid NE Oklahoma is. I spent 9 months in Georgia, nowhere nearly as humid as here. Houston was very comparable.

          • rphokc says:

and to think, a/c for the masses hasn’t been around all that long……..just fans and helpful breezes when I was a kid

          • paganpink says:

And those water cooler things that blew even more humidity into the room. On a hot, dry, day they helped but man they put a lot of water into the air. I remember a big overstuffed chair that my dad sat in getting soaking wet from the air blowing on it.

          • JB says:

Are you talking about Miami, OK? I’m from NE OK (Tulsa). I was born and raised there. It’s pretty much the same as OKC & Norman. It gets humid in the summer but usually NOWHERE near how humid it gets in the deep south.

I lived in Shreveport, Birmingham, Austin, Dallas, and spent time in Houston (aunt lived there), New Orleans, Gulfport-Biloxi & Miami. Tulsa does not even compare. You know how it cools off when it rains here? When I lived in Shreveport, it was still hot & sticky & oppressive when it rained…and that was in September!

          • thebigdroot says:

Yeah Miami area. Haven’t been to Bama area during the summer months so can’t compare. Spent a lot of time in Dallas and just a little in Houston. Pretty even in my book.

  • Thomas Lenard says:

Not good news for Landry Jones: Steelers sign Michael Vick.

    • JB says:

Why? Vick sucks. I bet LJ can beat him out in practice throwing the ball.

    • EasTex says:

      Hide your hound dawgs, LJ.

    • Cam says:

No surprise. Unfortunately Landry hasn’t progressed beyond the skillset of a third string QB and with the injury to Gradkowski it was only a matter of time before they signed someone else. LJ should still make the final roster as QB3, though.

    • JrsySooner says:

      Insurance only LJ is ok

Landry Jones makes bid to be Steelers’ backup QB

      August 25, 2015 12:00 AM
By Ed Bouchette / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Aside from the meaningful injury to center Maurkice Pouncey and a meaningless victory, some other developments emerged from the Steelers’ third exhibition game.

β€’ Landry Jones looks like a quarterback ready to move into the No. 2 job behind Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers might think he is not ready to pass Bruce Gradkowski for that job, but they feel a whole lot better about him today than they had in his previous two years.

That is why they drafted him in the fourth round from Oklahoma in 2013, and this summer he has taken some big steps. It helped him that Gradkowski opened camp on the shelf after practicing little in the spring with a sore shoulder. That has provided Jones with more practice and playing time, and he picked up more Sunday when Gradkowski left the game late in the second quarter with a finger injury on his left hand in his first and brief appearance in the preseason.

Jones finished the game and rallied his team from 16-9 down to victory. His day started poorly when his first pass was intercepted, but he went on to throw two touchdown passes, convert third downs and looked good making decisions and making all the various throws, including a deep one to rookie Sammie Coates that covered 54 yards and a perfect fade pass for a touchdown to Shakim Phillips that went for 20.

He finished with a nice 96.8 passer rating.

β€œWhen you’re getting more reps, with Bruce being down the majority of camp, your confidence is going to go through the roof,” said veteran receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey. β€œHe’s been working with me, Martavis [Bryant] and some younger guys who have been making plays for him. This camp was good for him to have those reps.”

His stats through two games did not show the kind of improvement he has made this summer and over the past year because of young receivers dropping touchdown passes and not running the right routes. But Jones falls into that category of not allowing those as excuses and not pinning the blame on others.

β€œDrops are going to happen. It’s not like they’re going out trying to drop the ball. I could have helped them out a little bit more with accurate throws right there too. It goes both ways; sometimes; they’re going to drop passes. and sometimes I’m going to miss a throw. We just can’t have as many as we did [Sunday against Green Bay].”

His coach has taken notice of the improvement..

β€œIt’s largely been arrow pointed up,” Mike Tomlin said. β€œLike I’ve said before, it’s big picture. We have so much football in front of us right now, so I don’t want to paint with a broad brush at this point. He’s got a lot of opportunities in front of him, as do all of the men.”

Has it been good enough for him to leap over Gradkowski to No. 2 and suit up for the first time in a game that counts?

β€œUmmm, you know what? I try to stay out of that as much as I can,” Jones said. β€œI can’t control what they do with me and Bruce. I just go out there and do my best and play my hardest.

β€œI feel good. There’s a lot of areas I still need to grow. but, all in all, I’m doing some positive things.”

  • DCinAZ says:

“Based on everything we have heard coming out of fall camp, expect Andrews to be a primary target in the red zone.”

Common sense finally reigns in Norman. Could’ve used Bell the same way.

  • RBear says:

Which RB, Perine or Mixon, or even both, cracks the All-Time top 10 OU RB list?

    • Bob Edwards says:

Maybe neither. You are after all talking a list that includes three Heisman trophy winners plus non winners from Tommy McDonald in the ’50s (never played in a losing game) to AD and DeMarco Murray.

It will be hard to pass many of those guys sharing the snaps in a pass happy offense.

      • RBear says:

I am so optimistic that I refused to include neither as a choice πŸ˜‰

Edited: Perhaps I should have said: Who has the best chance… ?

        • Bob Edwards says:

My point is they can both be really good and not make the top ten. The standard for top ten running back at Oklahoma is obscenely high. They both have the talent, but splitting time and the style of offense may keep them from getting enough touches to have the kind of stats you would need to be top ten.

          • RBear says:

I am not unaware of the criteria, just optimistic about the sick talent we have right now.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Well if we are talking best chance I would say Perine. He already has 1700 yards. A couple of 1000 yard seasons and he is in the top ten yards wise. Depending on how they use Mixon he may end up with as many receiving yards as rushing. Also assuming they both turn pro at the earliest possible moment Perine will have an extra year of playing.

          • RBear says:

It’s all just speculative fun- killing time until next Saturday.

BTW, if you didn’t see the link to OU’s record book above, check it out- sortable stats.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I use that site all the time. That’s how I knew a couple of 1000 yd seasons would get Perine in the top ten.

    • Doobie74OU says:

I was writing my post when Bob’s came up below and I agree. They could be amazing backs and not crack the top 10. I think most would agree the top 8 in some order are Billy Vessels, Billy Simms, Joe Washington, Steve Owens, Tommy McDonald, Gregg Pruitt, Marcus Dupree, Adrian Peterson. Guys like Quinton Griffin, Demarco Murray, DeMond Parker are still fresh on peoples mind but guys from the 40’s and 50’s like Clendon Thomas, Leon Heath, George Thomas, and Joe Golding are all really good players as well. If you make the Top 25 for OU RB’s that is really saying something!

    • KJ1123 says:

I tend to agree with Bob and Doob, but you never know. Also I think if they do crack the all time list during the next two years, then the air raid offense may have to get renamed.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

      Both.

  • KJ1123 says:

Anyone know a good pre-game spot in Norman? Is it just Campus Corner?

  • Brent says:

Does the Michael Vick signing signal the end of Landry Jones on the Steelers?

    • KJ1123 says:

Well, look at it this way. Geno is still with the Jets.

    • SamSooner says:

No. If Vick was that good, he’d be starting for one of the teams with QB issues. There are a ton of teams out there that are suffering. The QB always get more than their fair share of the blame and praise.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

I doubt it. They still need a QB3 and Vick still has to prove himself. With their backup injured they’re just being safe in case Ben gets hurt.

    • Daddy R says:

Yea I wouldnt think so either.. Landry has had a good preseason, and they’ve kept him this long for a reason. If he can keep progressing, they wont need another qb besides him and Ben in the next year or two.

  • j l says:

What happened to dallis todd? Ive not heard his name hardly at all.

  • Sacramento Sooner says:

Does anyone have any comparisons of what our O-line looks like coming in to this season compared to the 2009 season. That’s my only concern. We were returning Gresham (who obviously never played) and Bradford, but we had a young O-line, and things didn’t pan out too well.

    • Daryl says:

I was thinking the same thing just the other day.

    • Matt says:

whats crazy…if OU has Bradford that whole season, they probably play for a NC…They would beat every team (with the possible exception of Tech (which the polls would probably overlook as a hiccup) on their schedule that year. No game was lost by more than a touchdown other than Tech, I definitely think Bradford is worth at least 1 more TD/game than freshman Landry (even though I was a big LJ supporter)

      • Sacramento Sooner says:

definitely would have done better than Landry. I just remember that first game it seemed our O really struggled with the young lineman. But, they did improve through the year. Hopefully we’ll be ready for Game #2

    • Zack says:

The one thing I would consider makes this comparison laughable (IMO) is that we tried to convert an hback to center whereas we have a senior at center and then nila is also an interior guy so I think the line will be better than expected.

      • Sacramento Sooner says:

Great info. I couldn’t remember what all the issues and transitions had taken place. I just remember how much we struggled against BYU, as compared to the 2008 season. It seems we have experience on the line too, and having that at center can’t be overstated.

    • Sooner 76 says:

We had graduation and injury issues on the OL in 2009, same as in 2001. The D was actually better in 2001.

  • metzker says:

    Dline depth from my understanding

    DE- Tapper/Austin/ Ward
    NT – Romar/ Wade/ Overton
    DT – Dimon/Walker / Orso-Bacchus
    DE – Striker/ Bond/ Obo

    • ouwooferman says:

thanks, Interesting as well. Really could rotate two teams plus

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

      Wade?

      • Brad Warren says:

Yeah, surely he’ll be in rotation. Seems like he’s been here forever and is only a junior.

    • j l says:

What role would lampkin play in that scheme, DT or NT?

    • Zack says:

      Bacchus?

    • SoonerMGB56 says:

From what I’ve heard, the 1/2/3 status changes almost daily. Except for Tapper.

Ideally here, we’ll send the DL at them in waves. Utilizing the three-deep.

    • Sooner 76 says:

IMO, Dimon is not big enough to be effective at the 3-technique. I want a 300 pounder in that position.

Lampkin is 300 lbs and probably a great fit at the 3-tech.

      • SoonerMGB56 says:

But…..if they rotate the DL in waves, three deep, Dimon could be just fine.

We’ve got somewhat of the same issue with the stand-up DE’s/LB’s. They are undersized for a four man DL alignment. However, if we rotate extensively, they will be fine.

      • KJ1123 says:

Lampkin kind of reminds me of Tommie Harris, sort of looks like him too.

        • Brad Warren says:

He looks just like him in the face. Speaking of Tommie, he’s back at OU finishing up his degree. What a great guy!

      • Katyboomer says:

Dimon is a mini Watt. Kid can play some ball. He played great as a Katy Tiger and played his freshmen year at OU. That say a lot in its self.

        • EasTex says:

You don’t get selected the Defensive MVP in the 5A state championship game for no reason.
The way he has been utilized in OU’s defense has never allowed him to play with the same level of aggressiveness he did in high school.

          • Katyboomer says:

Agree 100% he was a beast when turned loose

          • EasTex says:

He was defeating double team blocks plus a chip by the RB and still making sacks and tackles for loss in the championship.
Dimon has a high revving motor that has been kept on cruise control.

          • Sooner 76 says:

Not disrespecting Dimon at all. He is a baller for certain. Just saying that he is in a better position to excell at SDE.

I am concerned about an alignment that potentially could have, on the weak side, an undersized DE (Striker), an undersized 3-tech (Dimon), and an undersized LBer (Dom).

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

But remember we play in the Big 12. Who has a back who can run over anybody but us?

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

            Like Austin English or Cody?

    • Zack says:

I wonder if shep will be his highest rated sooner. Mixon and Perine may be good enough. I will say though that shep was the best receiver in college last year prior to the injuries. He wasn’t on pace to have the most catches but he was killing cooper and white in yards per catch.

When you find yourself tempted to put stock in the names of new guys that Bobby Stoops is putting out there to the reporters..just remember the name Pryce Macon. No disrespect to
Pryce at all I’m just saying Bob mentioned him several times before the 2010
season and then he hardly even played.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Killed Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship game tho

      • Sooner 76 says:

He certainly did. He didn’t play in the first game and against osu. He started two games (texas game at DE and baylor at 3-Tech), and played quite a bit in many other games. He was definitely in the rotation on the DL at both DE and DT.

Hardly even played. I don’t think so.

        • Matt says:

Fair enough. Maybe I read too much into what Stoops was saying that year then, but the way he was talking it sounded like Macon was going to have a huge year.

          • Sooner 76 says:

Well, he did say on signing day that Q Russell would be a “huge difference maker” for OU.

          • Daryl says:

That’s on signing day. Every kid you recruit you think will be a huge help or you wouldn’t sign them. Once a kid gets to campus it’s anyone’s guess. Then you have kids that get here and look great but don’t maintain the work effort or class effort needed to get on the field; not to mention injuries have derailed several careers in college.

I watched Tom a lot on Film Room, and he knows his stuff. Far as I can tell, he’s not a homer to any team or conference and plays it straight. I’m surprised by his prediction as well, but encouraged that he sees the potential that we Sooner fans see.
